FoR reasons well known to mining engineers, wet grinding is quite universal in plants having to do with the extraction of metallic values from crude ores. In the processing of the nonmetallic and industrial minerals, dry grinding is the more common method. The crude materials usually contain less moisture than is required for wet grinding and the products usually are marketed in dry form; most of them as powders. To grind wet, therefore, would entail the addition of water and an expense for drying the product, which is not justified. Furthermore, the material would be a dried cake that would still have to be pulverized or disintegrated before use. For producing fine products, air separators have largely replaced the earlier practice of sizing with screens and bolting reels. Mills in which the air-separating feature is an integral part of the design are now commonplace. Mill designs are many and air systems have developed along various lines, but for the purpose of this discussion, only the fundamental idea need be emphasized— the idea of using air for sizing and removing pulverized material from a grinding mill. About 20 years ago, when the use of mills equipped with air separation had become common practice, heated air or gas was introduced to such a system for the removal of moisture. The purpose of this discussion is to outline the developments and trends that have followed this experiment. It is an important development, for mills equipped with air separation are now universally used for pulverizing not only nonmetallic and industrial minerals, but a great variety of other materials. All such mills are essentially the same. Dried material is pulverized, removed by an air stream, trapped in a cyclone collector, and relatively clean air from the cyclone is returned through a fan to the mill. There is no theoretical need for a vent from the system. The practical need is to vent the air that leaks into the system; and, since the cyclone is not 100 per cent efficient as a dust collector, this vented air carries some dust with it. The initial attempt at drying was made on a system like that described, by the addition of a furnace. The minus pressure within the mill draws hot gas from the furnace. Infiltration air, along with the drying gases and evaporated moisture, is vented as before. The first application was made to a mill used for pulverizing coal. The coal contained very little moisture, so very little drying effect was needed for the success of this experiment. Actually, some calculated efficiencies of over 100 per cent were obtained before due allowance was made for the conversion of mill power into useful heat. "The Special Standard Surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy Potash Operations (VPO) has been plagued with flow problems and wear, and corrosion issues for it’s entire working life. Investigation showed that the carbon steel construction, bin geometry, and resultant funnel-flow pattern were directly responsible for production losses and disproportionate maintenance and capital costs. Potash enters this bin at between 140°C and 165°C, but the stagnant potash outside the active flow channel was much cooler, allowing moisture to migrate toward the outer regions, which caused corrosion of the walls and reduced live capacity as the potash in this area hardened and built up on the walls over time.A 2013 inspection revealed holes and paper-thin areas in the lower cylinder wall sections and in the conical hopper. The only thing preventing major leaks and even a potentially catastrophic failure was the buildup of stagnant hardened product on the cone walls. It was concluded that the cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement. VPO’s original plan was to replace the cone in kind and repair the cylinder as necessary; however, a failure-mode and bin-performance investigation combined with a lifecycle- cost analysis indicated it would be better to redesign the hopper.For success in retrofit projects, it is essential at the design stage to consider the bulk solid flow properties and the operating environment involved. Because education in this area is not offered at a university level, engineers often do not fully appreciate the effects of the flow properties of bulk solids on bulk material handling equipment.Jenike & Johanson conducted flow properties tests on samples of potash and using the data, redesigned the bin and the feeder. After the modifications, VPO’s surge bin provides safer, more reliable operation with a much longer predicted working life. Using this retrofit as an example, we aim to provide a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory and highlight the importance of customizing the design to the appropriate flow properties in the cost effectiveness, reliability, and safety of a bulk material handling system."

The area around Osisko lake, the Horne mine, and the town of Rouyn, in northwestern Quebec, presents a most interesting structural problem. The present discussion is confined to an area around Osisko lake, about six miles long and three miles wide, shown in Figure 1. The writers are particularly indebted to Mr. Thayer Lindsley, of Ventures Limited, who sponsored the investigation and gave permission to publish this paper. Mr. H. L. The Zinc Corporation of South Africa Ltd. (Zincor) operates an integrated roast ? leach ? electrowinning circuit. The efficient removal and control of iron forms an integral part of the process. Zincor developed its own iron removal process (Zincor Process), which was recently shown to be unique with some similarities to the para-goethite iron removal process. Newly developed operating parameters for iron removal are in the process of being implemented. These include a change in the pH-profile and operating temperature, the recycling of seed material and the utilisation of an alternative neutralising agent to aid iron removal. Some of these actions, together with the implementation of a pre-neutralisation step, new filtration equipment and control systems in Zincor?s Residue Treatment Plant have significantly reduced zinc losses associated with iron in calcine and the iron residue produced. This enabled Zincor to take a step closer to world-class zinc recovery levels of around 96% for a similar type of operation.

INTRODUCTION Mineral commodities are normally separated into three generic classes-metals, nonmetals, and energy minerals including oil and gas as well as the solid fuels. Metals, the focus of this chapter, encompass a large number of different substances. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, for in- stance, has commodity specialists following trends in over 40 metal products of importance to the country's economy and well being. Ranging from aluminum to zirconium, the metals display an incredible degree of diversity. Some such as lead are heavy, others such as magnesium are light. Some such as copper are good conductors of electricity. Others such as silicon are semiconductors. Mercury is found in liquid form, while some metals melt only when heated to extremely high temperatures. Iron and steel, aluminum, and copper are consumed in particularly large tonnages in a multitude of end uses, while many minor metals are needed in only small amounts in a few highly specialized applications. The use of some metals can be traced back into history for millennia, indeed back to the bronze and iron ages, while the commercial consumption of aluminum and other newer metals is less than a hundred years old. Some metals are extracted from large open pits, others are dug out of deep underground mines, and still others are processed from the sea. Mining and processing can be relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive, though in most instances highly sophisticated technology is necessary and the costs are high. Some metals are produced mainly as byproducts of other metals. Some are recovered in large quantities from the scrap of obsolete equipment and demolished buildings. Some are mined in only a few locations and traded worldwide, others are produced in many different countries. Some are sold by numerous firms at fluctuating prices determined on competitive commodity exchanges, others are produced by only a handful of firms and sold at stable producer-prices. This diversity makes the metals interesting, indeed fascinating, to study. Yet, it also poses problems, for each metal in its own way is unique. There is no general model or economic analysis applicable to all metals. Rather each must be considered individually, so that the analysis or model takes explicit account of its particular features. This means that a single chapter cannot begin to cover comprehensively the economics of all metals, and no attempt to do so is made here. Instead, we will concentrate on illustrating the usefulness of relatively simple economic principles, particularly those associated with supply and demand analysis, in understanding the behavior of metal markets. The next section begins by exploring the nature of metal demand. It is followed by an investigation of metal supply- from individual product production, from by- product and coproduct production, and from secondary production. The final section then illustrates the usefulness of the concepts introduced in earlier sections by using them to analyze

In the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1,2 results in inadequate beneficiation. Investigation of Flotation Methods Flotation has been used in 'Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate. 3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P2O5 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. Limnological processes are often overlooked when trying to assess the long-term water quality of pit lakes. It is essential to deal with these aspects, since they determine the geochemical and redox conditions around the submerged reactive rocks. Underground mining at East Sullivan (northwestern Quebec, Canada) stopped in 1966. Two adjacent stopes, 91 and 106 m deep, were left open to the surface, with roughly circular apertures of about 7700 and 18 000 m2. Water filling of the two glory holes went on over three decades and overflow began in 1999. Surface water pHs values were near neutrality as late as 1994 (6.3 - 7.0) but had become acidic by 1999 (2.6 - 3.5). Limnological processes were investigated in late-1999 and early-2000, with temperature measurements at 1 m intervals and sampling of the water columns before and after the late fall density inversions. A strong chemocline-thermocline was observed at 15 m. Above the chemocline, the water had low pH (3.2), no alkalinity, and low Na, Ca and sulfate. Below the chemocline, the concentrations of these parameters and the pH increased, with pH at 5.5 - 6. Consistent with the low pH values present in the upper 15 m, the concentrations of Al, Cd, Cu, and Zn were high near surface, and decreased below the chemocline. Dissolved oxygen concentrations as well as Eh decreased with increasing depth. Alkalinity integrated over the entire water column below the chemocline was at least six times larger than the acidity inferred from Fe2+ and Fe3+ concentrations. The temperature survey showed that seasonal density inversions do occur in the water column. The inversions do not involve the entire water body, since the surface to depth ratio is too small for a complete overturn. Oxygen from surface waters is carried to the bottom where it oxidises sulfides, until its depletion. Residual Fe2+, stable under anoxic conditions, is displaced upward by the next dense water incursion. It eventually reaches the thermocline, but only after many successive incursions. There, its oxidation to Fe3+ allows hydrolysis, which consumes dissolved and wall-rock alkalinity. It is only in 1999 that alkalinity was finally exhausted and that the pH shifts to acid values. The low pHs in the surface waters allow a build up of Fe3+ and Al3+, and desorption of metals from colloids. Buffering is assumed to be controlled by wall-rock oxyhydroxides in surface waters, and by carbonate minerals in the bottom waters. Because the seasonal overturns are far from being complete, the large amounts of alkalinity acquired from the wall-rock in the bottom waters cannot balance the acidity of near surface waters. Hence the surface water is acidic.

The coulombimetric reduction method has been used as an evaluation technique for Pb-Ca-Sn anode corrosion in the LIX-SX-EW process. The proposed methodology involves three consecutive steps, i.e., cleaning, oxidation and reduction. They are carried out in the same experimental unit, in solutions containing 180 g/L H2S04 with and without the addition of cobalt. The authors have worked in a wide range of oxidation current densities, from 150 to 500 A/m2 for in a period from 0.5 to 120 hours. It can be concluded from the results that there would be a linear relationship between the applied electrical charge I*T (Coulomb) and the anode corrosion expressed as transformed Pb mass (mg), for solutions with or without the addition of cobalt. The exception is that for the last one the corrosion rate is 5 times faster, which was observed for every layer. From the evaluation of different corrosion layers, one can point out that its composition is mainly in the form of sulphate. In the presence of cobalt, about 67% of Pb would be as sulphate (PbSO4), about 27% as a basic oxide (PbO) and only 6% as oxide PbO2 on the surface. From this result, it appears that great transformations occurred in the metal/sulphate interface. Without the addition of cobalt, the proportion of oxide Pb02 on the surface increased up to 11.5%. According to the previous statement and considering that Pb was found mainly as sulphate, the authors recommend its determination be used as quality selection criterion. Its evaluation should be performed in the acid solutions with 200 ppm cobalt addition at an oxidation current density of 300 A/m2 for a period of 24 hours.

The removal of antimony from a refractory gold-bearing stibnite ore by roasting and selective chlorinating roasting was investigated. The influence of roasting temperature, roasting time, roasting atmosphere and type and amount of chlorinating agents on antimony removal were studied. The laboratory studies carried out included roasting tests of 4 g samples in a laboratory rotary kiln, followed by 400 g samples roasted in a fluidised bed. The test results revealed that antimony was efficiently removed by roasting at temperatures over 800¦C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The most efficient volatilisation of antimony was achieved with the addition of ferric chloride at temperatures between 350-600¦C.

Reconciliation of long-term block model reserves and mine production frequently shows significant discrepancies. This reconciliation can be done comparing the long-term block model reserves against a grade control model (generally, a model based on blast holes or production data). in this paper called an FI factor for tonnages, grade, and ounces; and also it should be done comparing the grade control model to the mill feed (or loaded to heaps) tonnages, grades and ounces (called an F2 factor). The long-term model usually contains blocks with dimensions larger than the size of the selective mining unit (SMU) of the operation. The smoothing effect of an estimator such as kriging will generally result in a grade-tonnage curve that does not match the grade-tonnage curve of the SMU's to be recovered. This problem is partly to blame for the reconciliation discrepancies found. In addition, in-pit perfect selection is impossible. and therefore the grade-tonnage predictions based on blast holes also need to be assessed, considering both unplanned dilution and the errors of estimation of the grade control model. This paper will focus on using conditional simulations to assess the uncertainty of the predicted grade-tonnage curve in terms of minable reserves, and in the framework of long-term mine planning. Quantifying the uncertainty in no uncertain terms is done in conjunction with a popular pit optimizer, which will yield not one, but several possible minable reserves, and therefore a range of possible minable tonnages and grades per pit shell or scheduled phase. This is a step further from the usual sensitivity analyses that are performed for deposit evaluation or development planning. Specifically, this approach takes into account the volume-variance relationship, the selectivity of the mining operation, planned and unplanned dilution. and carries the local uncertainty implicit in grade estimation into the mine design and mine planning phases. The motivation for the approach is discussed through an example, as well as a description of the procedures and steps involved.

The following methods have been selected from a large number tried while assaying several hundred samples of placer concentrates. It is thought that some of these methods may be useful to those who are required to assay similar products containing large quantities of metallic articles, such as jeweler's sweepings. No great difficulties will be encountered in assaying black sand from beaches or river bars. Such samples require care in grinding and sifting so that no oversize particles of gold or platinum are lost. It is also necessary to have sufficient silica in the flux to form a fluid slag with the excess of iron, magnesium, or chromium which such samples contain. It is much more difficult to assay black sands, or concentrates, produced in large-scale placer-mining operations. These products are usually much harder and more abrasive than the beach black sands. They also contain numerous metallic particles resulting mainly from wear on the mining machinery. These particles consist chiefly of iron or steel but also contain lead, copper, and alloys such as babbitt, solder, brass, ferrosilicon, etc. Fairly large particles of gold are often found. Some samples will contain as much as 10 percent of such metallic particles. It is not feasible to remove the particles of iron with a magnet and discard them, as they invariably contain gold, sometimes a considerable amount. This gold is attached to the iron particles by rust or wedged into cavities. Scraps of sheet iron are often found which have become tightly folded or rolled and contain gold or amalgam within the folds.

The listed title of my talk to-day is "MODERN ON STRAND SINTER COOLING". Perhaps it should he ve been "COMPLETION OF SINTERING ON THE STRAND" as the two are synonymous. By the very nature of the DWIGHT-LLOYD SINTERING PROCESS partial cooling on the strand is always present, but not completion of sintering and cooling on the strand. I have mentioned the Dwight-Lloyd process just to be certain the type of sintering under discussion is fully identified because some of the basic mechanisms of sintering occur in various pyro-processing of fines lying in close quiescent contact, such as powdered metals practices, some types of pellet induration, firing of briquets, or other compacts, where the entire bed is brought to, and held at, the high reaction temperatures of sintering. Figure 1, The continuous sintering process as originally conceived consisted of intimately mixing carefully proportioned burdens, placing them in a comparatively thin, draft permeable layer, on a moving grate and igniting the surface while drawing sir through the bedded burden. The moving grate was advanced slowly as the line of burning fuel travelled from the surface to the bottom of the bed and no more fire zone could be seen.

"Due to the low iron grade and high sulfur content, pyrite cinder is difficult to be directly used for iron-making. In this paper, technology of magnetic roasting -grinding and magnetic separation -acid leaching was put forward for reclamation of pyrite cinder. For pyrite cinder of TFe53.51%, S2.20 %, studies showed that good magnetic effect can be achieved at roasting temperature 650~7000, reducing atmosphere CO/(CO + C02) 10~20% and roasting time 10~30 minutes. In separation conditions of grinding size -0.045mm accounting for 96.09% and magnetic field intensity of 1240 GS, iron concentrate of TFe64.81 %, S0.18% and iron recovery rate 91.44% was achieved. Acid leaching was studied to strengthen desulfurization. Results showed that high-quality iron ore concentrate of TFe66.3 l %, S0.10% was obtained under the conditions of hydrochloric acid mass fraction of 5%, pulp density of30%, leaching temperature of70? and leaching time of2 hours.IntroductionPyrite cinder is produced as a by-product of sulfuric acid industry [1] Domestic production is more than 12 million tons every year and occupied area is over 10 million square meters [2,3]. The pyrite cinder outdoor not only pollutes air but also damages surrounding surface [4] It after treatment used for iron-making is an ideal reclamation approach for its rich iron which is commonly 40-60% [5]. But pyrite cinder gets low utilization for its low iron grade and high sulfur content in China [6]. Therefore, comprehensive utilization of pyrite cinder has profound significance to environmental protection and the development of domestic iron and steel industry."

Alluvial cassiterite concentrations are widespread in river gravel and high level terraces within the Ray River watershed. The area lies in unglaciated terrain of Alaska's northern interior. Cassiterite originates from several calc-alkaline plutons of the Ruby batholith. Extensional stresses resulted in graben-like Tertiary basins that were flooded by a 200 ft thick section of mid-to late- Tertiary basalt flows. Basalt blocked local drainages, and 50- to 100-ft of terrace gravel was eventually deposited on top of the flows. Further downwarping and eventual fluvial downcutting of the flows resulted in cycles of accelerated sediment transport, deposition, and reconcentration. Repeated erosional cycles concentrated heavy minerals and resulted in development of tin placers. Preliminary resource estimates of contained tin in Recent alluvium range from 62 to as much as 172 million lbs-Sn in 300 million yd3. Grade of about 90% of the gravels is estimated to range between 0.2- to 0.5- lbs-Sn/yd3. Associated gold and rare earth elements (REE) in monazite and xenotime may be recoverable. Most of the tin is considered a subeconomic inferred resource, though, at least some of the gravels contain 2-to 6-lbs-sn/yd3. Estimates are projected on the basis of surface sampling and several auger drill holes and are provided for the purpose of land-use management planning.

Simple parameters, capable of easy observation on-site under operating conditions without interruption to production, are outlined for the operational assessment of underground conveyor systems. Recording techniques, methods of analysis and deduction of operational characteristics are discussed for batch inputs to several points of a multiple belt conveyor system with limited inter-belt storage capacity. Particular attention is given to input and output load- time distributions, utilisation of inter-belt storage capability and system shutdown behaviour. Actual data, observed for a transfer feeder located between two trunk conveyor belts in an underground coal mine, is used to illustrate the operational assessment of an underground system. Load sensitive feedback systems-are briefly considered.

This report presents the results of an evaluation of several indirect methods of measuring the water content of oil-reservoir rocks. The water content of oil-base cores is considered to be most nearly representative of the water content of the undisturbed petroleum reservoir and therefore, the direct method of measuring the volumes of water in cores cut in oil-base drilling fluid was adopted as a standard for comparison. The indirect methods evaluated included (1) displacement through a semipermeable membrane by air, (2) centrifuge, (3) evaporation, (4) mercury injection, (5) chloride dilution and (6) electric logs. Approximately 270 samples of cores from petroleum-reservoir rocks were used in the study. The cores, most of which were cut with oil-base mud in the hole, were taken from oilfields in California, Texas Gulf coast, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Alaska.

Geological information plays a significant, cost effective role, in the Mt Whaleback iron ore mining operations. The geology and structure are complex. Good communication between the Mine Planning Production Scheduling and Quality Control Sections is the key to utilisation of geological information to its full potential.Drilling and pit face mapping are the two basic sources of detailed data sets which are processed to prepare up to date geological cross sections and benchwise geological plans. This information is used directly for the blast pattern design and production scheduling. Physical ore type estimation is also undertaken. Orebody models are generated from the geological information.
