MANY producers of by-product coke have spent considerable time and given considerable thought to the use of a substitute for low-volatile coal as an admixture with high-volatile coking coal for charging high-temperature by-product coke ovens. Generally speaking, there are two principal reasons for this, one being occasioned by the lack, in certain localities, of low-volatile coal delivered at a cost sufficiently low to permit its use, and another being the desirability of finding a substitute product with a delivered cost lower than the cost of the low-volatile coal. It was for the first of these reasons that the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation was particularly interested in this subject. This paper deals with the experimental work and the results obtained by that company in producing and using low-temperature char. OVERCOMING DEFECTS IN COKE FROM COLORADO COALS Colorado coking coals are all of the high-volatile type and were all laid down during he Cretaceous period, which makes them something like 80 million or so years younger, geologically, than eastern coals. They behave, when coked alone, something like the Pittsburgh-seam coals. They make a very brittle, highly cross-fractured, fingery coke of fair shatter value but quite low in resistance to abrasion. Mixed with a low-volatile coking coal such as Pocahontas or certain Oklahoma coals, they make a coke that is equal to virtually any of the eastern cokes. The inferior quality of Colorado coke has long been recognized, and a considerable amount of time, effort and money has been spent upon investigations of means for improving its physical properties. While it has been found that some improvement in quality of coke can be secured by the adjustment and control of such variables as pulverization, moisture content, oven temperature and bulk density of charge, and through the addition of certain inert materials such as pulverized coke breeze, pitch, high-volatile noncoking or semicoking coal, the benefits so gained have been comparatively small. There are no low or medium-volatile coking coals available within a reasonable freight-cost distance. Therefore a substitute for low-volatile coal was developed through low-temperature carbonization-or, more correctly speaking, through the partial devolatilization-of high-volatile coals. The blending of this lower volatile char with the high-volatile coking coal distinctly improves the quality of coke made from Colorado coal. There is nothing especially new about this idea. In 1908 a Japanese patent was taken out by Kotaro Shimomura, whose claim was: The method of making a nonfingery coke out of bituminous coals, without using natural coals of low-volatile matter; according to which a certain coal is heated at a temperature between about 300°C. and about 600°C. so as to leave about 15 to 25 per cent volatile matter in the coal; this coal is mixed with the

"Production of explosives for industrial use in,the United States during 1934 continued the upward trend begun in 1933 from the low-level output of 1932, and the output in 1934 was only slightly less than in 1931.Reports to the United Stated Bureau of Mines from companies engaged in the manufacture of industrial explosives showed that the quantity of explosives manufactured in the United States and sold during 1934 for use within the various States was 314,767,922 pounds - 23 percent more than in 1931.Production during 1934 included 39,207,845 pounds of permissible explosives 5 206,625,027 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and,68,935,050 pounds of black blasting powder of which 37,192,700 pounds were in granular form and 31,742,350 pounds in pellet form. These figures represent an increase over 1933 of 15.6 percent for permissible explosives, 30.9 percent for other high explosive, and 7.4 percent for black powder.Coal-mining operations were the chief consumers of permissible explosives; 99 percent of the total output in 1934 was used, in coal mines. The proportion used by bituminous mines was 59 percent and by anthracite mines 40 percent. Coal mining was likewise the principal consumer of black blasting powder, taking 88 percent of the total sales during 1934; of this proportion, bituminous mines received 78 percent and anthracite mines between 9 and 10 percent. Consumers of high explosives other than permissibles were more varied; the reports showed that 11 percent of the total quantity sold was for coal mining, 22 percent for metal mining, 17 percent for quarrying and nonmetallic-mineral mining, 46 percent for railway and other construction work, and 4 percent for all other purposes."

THE nominal composition of "hconel" alloy 718 is 53 pct Ni-19 pct Cr-19 pct Fe-3 pct Mo-5 pct Cb-0.8 pct Ti-0.6 pct A1-0.05 pct C. The nature of the fine strengthening phase in this alloy has been open to debate. iseelstein' has identified the strengthening phase in the matrix of "Inconel" alloy 718 as a colum-bium-rich fcc y' precipitate. Wagner and Hall2 have noted that the metastable y' precipitate overages to an orthorhombic Ni3Cb precipitate which manifests itself as an acicular phase. These authors thus clarify Kaufman and Palty's earlier suggestion3 that the strengthening phase is orthorhombic NisCb. Wagner and Hall's review also reports work by cometto4 which suggests that the fine strengthening phase is not fcc / but bct with a Ni3V type structure and based on the Ni3Cb composition. Kir man and warringtons have shown by analysis of electron diffraction patterns that the metastable strengthening phase in a 55 pct Ni-15 pct 0-25 pct Fe-5 pct Cb alloy is bct and based on the Ni3Cb composition. Raymond~ has provided electron diffraction evidence which indicates that "y'" in "Inconel" alloy 718 is bct in structure. This note presents unambiguous data on the structure of the strengthening phase in "Inconel" alloy 718* ihe samples of this alloy were provided by courtesy of the ASTM task group on phase identification in 'superalloys. after prolonged aging. The electron diffraction patterns presented show that strengthening phase is not y' but bct as was proposed by cometto,' supported by Raymond,~ and identified by Kirman and warringtons in a similar system. Fig. 1 shows a selected-area diffraction pattern taken from a thin foil of "Inconel" alloy 718. The sample had received a final aging treatment of 1118 hr at 1200°F to precipitate the strengthening phase in the matrix. Fig. 2 is a schematic representation of the features in the diffraction pattern. The matrix orientation is (0i2)~,, as is shown by the indexed zone in Fig. 3. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 illustrate that the pattern, Fig. 1, is composed of three bct zones, viz., (0i4), (2i0), and (i01), respectively. These three zones correspond, respectively, to the alignment of the c axis of the bct unit cell with the [001], [loo], and [OlO] directions of the fcc matrix and serve to illustrate the fully coherent relationship of the precipitate structure with the matrix. The streaking of certain reflections is also consistent with the above orientation relationship. The interpretation of the diffraction effects presented here shows the metastable strengthening precipitate in "Inconel" 718 alloy to be bct in structure and demonstrates that it is not an ordered fcc y' phase.

[ ] DISCUSSION F A LORIA*-The method of testing gun steel for resistance to surface cracking described in this paper was restricted to the examination of small, rod-shaped specimens The writer would like to point out the importance of other factors in producing defects in forged and bored gun tubes which would not be apparent in this investigation because of the nature of )he test Actual section size would accentuate the possibility of internal wall (bore) defects arising from unequal expansion between the internal and external wall surfaces on firing, resulting in internal tearing Checks and tears on the inside walls arise from internal tensions and nonuniformity on cooling, but the internal tearing can be reduced by using alloys of low expansion and of good thermal conductivity so as to reduce the difference between the outer and inner wall surfaces Also, the possibility of the location of inclusion segregates within a machined gun tube becomes more likely than in a small test specimen The effect of these nonmetallics on gun life and performance is evident when one realizes that the inclusions are soft yet brittle They reduce the amount of plastic deformation which can take place before cohesive failure occurs Once localized fracture has occurred at the position of a chain of these inclusions, a sharp notch (crack) is formed which produces stress conditions more favorable to cohesive failure than to plastic deformation These cracks aid erosion by providing channelways for the explosive gases, eventually leading to the tearing out or spalling of blocks of metal Oxidation of the surface may be partly responsible for the change in the surface of gun steel during firing observed by the author The appearance of burn on the surface is an indication that high temperatures were reached on firing, resulting in a slight oxidation of the surface Since the color of the oxidized film depends on both temperature and time, a higher temperature is required for a given color to form when it is caused by explosive heat, which acts for only an extremely short time at a given spot, than when it is caused by ordinary tempering The cross section of the gun steel specimen, Fig 16, illustrates that the repeated firing temperatures were high enough to cause

Samples of cobalt and bismuth concentrates produced from the NICO deposit in Northwest Territories were subjected to a comprehensive metallurgical testwork consisting of: pressure oxidation, ferric chloride leach and carbon in leach, to recover the cobalt, bismuth and gold, respectively. A specific testwork program was designed to allow for the optimization of process parameters under multiple restrictive criteria. The overall objective was to establish leaching sequences that could produce acceptable recoveries while generating environmentally disposable residues as well as solutions suitable for further processing. The recoveries for the leaching stage, under the optimum conditions, were 97% for cobalt and 95% for gold, in the case of the cobalt concentrate. The bismuth concentrate produced recoveries of 99% for bismuth, 99% for cobalt and 97% for gold, respectively

TITANIUM is one of the most abundant elements in the minerals that make up the earth's crust but its use in industry is only a generation old; yet probably no other important commercial mineral raw material (except possibly magnesium) has undergone more changes and developments in sources of supply, in processing techniques, in uses and applications, in the past 10 years, or stands on' such a threshold of still more advances. Its outstanding use today is as the oxide, and because of its extreme whiteness, high refractive index, chemical stability, and relative cheapness, it has become the white pigment used in the largest volume. New developments in the uses of titanium metal, potential and actual, may surpass the pigment use of the oxide before many years. TITANIUM-BEARING MINERALS Although a number of minerals contain titanium as the principal metal, only a few are of commercial importance. These are arizonite, ilmenite, and rutile. The other oxides, brookite, pseudobrookite, and anatase, occur in a few deposits, one at least of minor importance. The silicate titanite, and the double oxide of calcium and titanium, perovskite, occur in a few deposits in quantities sufficient to be considered as potential ores were not richer deposits of the oxides available elsewhere. Arizonite is a name given by Palmer46a to a mineral found some years ago in minute quantities in Arizona, which has the formula Fe203.3Ti02. Unexpectedly, it was found that the black titaniferous iron oxide found in large quantities on the beaches of many continental land masses corresponds in chemical composition to this formula (although ferrous oxide is always present). No one has yet been able to prove that the commercial mineral on the beaches is truly arizonite, or an allotropic modification of it, since X-ray investigations by Howard Carl and A. F. Gabriel, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and by the X-ray laboratory of the Chemical Department at the Experimental Station of the du Pont company, have shown only that the sand mineral gives just a jumble of lines, rather than an identifiable pattern. The Early Proterozioc Pine Creek Geosyncline hosts a large number of gold showings. Mineralisation types include stratiform, synsedimentary deposits within iron formation and carbonaceous mudstone; disseminations in granophyric intrusives; and quartz vein related concentrations in the form of shear fillings, saddle reefs and stockworks. Stratiform gold deposits preferentially formed near penecontemporareous faults during periods of basin instability. Intrusive basic magmas later assimilated some stratiform mineralisation and subsequently redeposited it within differentiated phases. Gold was again remobilized during regional deformation and metamorphism. Stratiform mineralisation was upgraded insitu in high strain zones and gold was mobilized into metamorphic fluids. Fluid induced fracturing during prograde metamorphism and later uplift caused the deposition of extensive gold rich vein systems. The genetic relationship between gold deposit types is reflected in the clustering of showings along regional anticlines, and provides a powerful exploration tool. The large volume of 'exhalative'òmaterial in the Geosyncline with elevated gold content suggests significant economic stratiform mineralisation may be present, and probably provides a source for later disseminated and vein deposits.

This is the final report on a research program to develop a pilot plant gasifier for slagging gasification of lignite at high pressures and to obtain process data under various operating conditions. An operable pilot plant was developed, and the test results show that lignite is well suited for the process. Tests were run at pressures from 80 to 400 psig, and the results indicated that pressure had little effect on gas composition or the material requirements per unit gas produced. Gas production rates as high as 26,000 scfh/sq ft of reactor area were obtained at 300 psig, but limitations on auxiliary equipment prevented full-capacity operation at 400 prig. In several tests lignite having a 37-percent moisture content and 2,500° F ash-fusion temperature was successfully gasified. Refractory materials were found to have a short life in contact with high-temperature slag, and a water-cooled taphole was developed. Exploratory tests with coking coal were unsuccessful.

The Gympie Province is a unique tectono-stratigraphic unit which does not fit into the overall palaeogeographic pattern of the New England Fold Belt (NEFB), and part of it has been proposed as an exotic terrane more closely linked to New Zealand. From E to W the Gympie Province comprises 6 distinct units which can be evaluated as suspect or exotic terranes.

A 3050m long section of a 1.65m internal diameter tunnel is presently under construction in the Brisbane area by means of the pipe-jacking method. The soils along the alignment had been deposited in a deltaic/estaurine environment and rapid changes in soil type occur. The tunnel passes beneath several extensive bodies of surface water. Groundwater problems have been experienced with tunnelling through alluvial sands and gravels. Details of the ground conditions, the pipe-jacking method used and tunnelling experience are discussed in this Paper.

Up until June 1988, Mount Thorley Coal Handling and Preparation Plant disposed of tailings by two methods. Approximately half of the plant tailings was mechanically dewatered by solid bowl centrifuges mixed with plant reject and was subsequently disposed in mine overburden spoils; the remainder was pumped to tailings ponds. Both future mine planning and environmental constraints could not allow for the long term construction of more tailings ponds so, following evaluation of available dewatering technology, belt press filters were selected for the treatment of tailings in excess of the capacity of the existing solid bowl centrifuges. Commission of the four 2.5 metre wide belt press filters soon showed that marked differences in performance were experienced when treating different coal seams. Further analysis showed that the coal tailings from different seams were quite different in terms of clay mineralogy, and these differences could be correlated with varying degrees of filter performance. Poor filter performance was experienced with coal tailings rich in sodium montmorillinite clays. A number of variables were investigated including in-line mechanical mixing of flocculant and feed slurry, cation exchange reagents such as gypsum, and upstream addition of cationic flocculant. In order to achieve satisfactory performance on the worst tailings, a combination of all of the above was required. In this paper, the reasons for selection of belt press filters and the program of investigations and testwork required to arrive at satisfactory belt press filter performance for the treatment of troublesome bentonitic rich tailings are discussed.

"THE OBJECT of these notes is to initiate a discussion among the members of our Institution on the connotation of the term 'ore', and to arrive, if possible, at an acceptable definition of the term in the light of its current use by our leading mining engineers, metallurgists, •and geologists.The majority of •authors of well-known modern text-books on subjects dealing with mineral deposits define 'ore' in words which convey the meaning that it is an aggregate of minerals from which one or more metals can, under favourable conditions, be extracted profitably.Many eminent members of the Institution, and of mining and metallurgical institutions in other countries, consider that the term should not be restricted to metalliferous mineral •deposits but can also be applied correctly to certain non-metallic deposits. They believe that the growth, during the twentieth century, in the industrial importance of non-metallic minerals, and the progress made in the mining and the milling of deposits containing such minerals by methods similar to those used for metalliferous mineral deposits, no longer justify the academic restriction of the term to deposits worked for their metal content only."

Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the U.S. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and airways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof became the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight, movements that are, frequently, hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned, the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but can vary from inches to 20 ft or more. "Pyroclastic rocks are useful guides to volcanic centers due to the tendency of their fragments to increase in size and volume toward the source vent. The felsic rocks of these centers can be the prime hosts of base metal deposits in the Precambrian Shield; their sub-volcanic equivalents are often the focus of porphyry copper mineralization in the Cordillera. Quantitative mapping of pyroclastic rocks has not yet developed into a routine prospecting tool in Canada, however, possibly due to the cumbersome nature of existing manual techniques and their limitation to structurally simple terrains.A rapid pyroclastic mapping method has been developed whereby the field geologist acquires only a down-plunge outcrop photograph, a record of the fragmental deformation ellipsoid and a record of some descriptive features from each station. Mean fragment size and volume percent are obtained later in the laboratory from a photo-enlargement: by means of a digital analyzer. A computer program uses the strain parameters to 'undeform' the field measurements and obtains genetic information from the descriptive data. Results can be superimposed on a geologic map, with values for each station being represented by a dot of a specified diameter corresponding to the size or volume percentile range to which the value belongs.Control traverses were run over the pyroclastic rocks surrounding the Anderson Lake mine and the Flin Flon South main shaft in northern Manitoba. In both locations, the mapping has delineated regular increasing trends in mean size and volume per cent toward the head frame."

El presente trabajo señala la repercusión del CIPEC sobre el precio del cobre en los demás países y en un futuro inmediato, así como describe las relaciones entre la política minera y la política de desarrollo referidos a los países en vías de desarrollo. Para conocer la importancia de dicha institución, es necesario señalar sus funciones y las características básicas entre los cuatro países miembros: Perú, Chile, Congo y Zambia. Posteriormente, se analiza la política de estos países participantes para definir dos objetivos importantes. El primero, señala el aumento de la producción mineral -en tanto haya posibilidad de crecimiento del mercado de cobre- y así crear condiciones favorables para el crecimiento a largo plazo de consumo. Mientras que el segundo, refiere cómo el CIPEC debe afontar el desequilibrio de los países entre las tasas de crecimiento de las exportaciones y de las importaciones a través de cambios rápidos en sus estructuras económicas para facilitar al mismo tiempo la industrialización y el desarrollo de la producción agrícola .

Mineral resources in the Silver Creek study area of the Nez Perce National Forest. Idaho, were investigated during the summer Of 1989. The study area includes the 36,100-acre Silver Creek-Pilot Knob RARE II area (No. 1-849) on the north side of the South Fork Clearwater River, about 11 miles west of Elk City, 10. Mines in and near the study area in the Tenmile and Newsome mining districts produced about 100.000 02 of gold, mostly from placers. Gold production had an historic value estimated at 52 million, equivalent to nearly $40 million at today's prices. Lode mines produced about 19,000 oz of gold, along with smaller amounts of silver, copper, lead, and zinc. Of 34 mines and prospects examined, ten lode properties are considered to be significant by virtue of their past development or production and the presence of possibly ore-grade mineralization. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area; however, samples that contained gold and anomalous arsenic delineate a three-mile-long area from the Sentinel mine, north to the Blue Quartz prospect where exploration might disclose resources. One mining company is conducting geophysical studies and drilling within the delineated area. In addition, six placer sites may contain enough gold to be of possible interest for future exploration and development.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. (Fig. 1)Waikato North Head 30km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook, and Taharoa 70km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan. Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3km off shore through two underwater pipelines.Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook l8kms through a 200mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.
