A tower-like magnetic system comprising eight permanent magnets was installed at the center of a flotation column to separate chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite minerals. A cyclonic flotation was installed within the underpart of the column to separate the pyrrhotite from the gangues. A three-product magnetic flotation column was fabricated to create a magnetic field and a cyclonic zone. The products were Cu concentrates, pyrrhotite concentrates and tailings. The theoretical magnetic field strengths and the magnetic forces were calculated. The results of the flotation experiments showed that the Cu grade increased from 14.20% without the magnetic field to 26.40% in the presence of the magnetic field and that the S grade in the pyrrhotite concentrates increased in the presence of cyclonic flotation. The separation efficiency of this magnetic flotation column was evident. Therefore, this three-product magnetic flotation column may have a potential application, due to its high separation efficiency.

As part of the Ministry of the Environment's Resource Recovery Program, the Province of Ontario has constructed a $13 million "Experimental Plant for Resource Recovery" in Metropolitan Toronto. The technology and unit operations involved in the processing of municipal solid wastes at a rate of 40 tons per hour at this facility are reviewed. Shredding, air separation and classification, screening, magnetic separation and composting are some of the operations featured at this plant. Recoverable commodities expected include paper, ferrous metals, an air-classified light fraction (shredded paper and film plastic), glass and compost. Existing and potential markets for these materials are discussed.

A comprehensive production research program, now in progress at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., includes studies of the displacement of petroleum from sand by detergent solutions. An earlier report (12)2/ presented the results of an extensive research program to determine the value of detergents as floodwater additives. This report presents later results of the detergent-testing program (13, 17). Although water-flooding methods and controls are constantly being improved to increase the production of oil from secondary-recovery operations, considerable crude oil commonly remains.in place after a water flood has been terminated. Therefore, the possibility of improving the efficiency of a waterflood by the use of detergents is of increasing interest. The effects of many substances on the efficiency of water flooding have been investigated in laboratory studies (5, 11, 13, 17, 19, 24). Of the various sub-stances tested, only surface-active agents were consistently effective in removing oil from sand. Results of laboratory studies presented in earlier reports (9, 11, 12, 13) show that many detergent solutions effectively displace petroleum from sand surfaces under varying conditions encountered in centrifuging, manual and mechanical agitation, ultrasonic vibration, and imbibition.

The bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on April 19, 1995, has once again renewed public debate surrounding the availability and use of explosives in the United States. In the past, Congressional review of explosives regulation has generally followed tragic events such as the bombing of Pan American World Airways Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988; the February 26, 1993, bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City; and the delivery of six package bombs to members of one family in several western New York communities, killing five people, on December 23, 1993.

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 350 meters (1150 ft .) and 488 meters (1600 ft .) . The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broad- band, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or E layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane. The measurement systems used are similar to those used earlier. The technique is to record broadband, analog signals, digitize the data, and use a fast- Fourier transform to obtain spectral plots. This tech- nique is novel in that it can measure simultaneously all magnetic field energy within a limited portion of the spectrum for a limited time, and, after processing, reproduce the events occurring in that time interval in great detail .

WET-PROCESS coal-washing tables as we know them today have been in use in this country for approximately 25 years. The literature records only a few table installations worthy of note prior to adoption of the present-day differential-motion table. According to Phillips,' six Campbell bumping tables were being operated by the St. Bernard Coal Co., Earlington, Ky., in 1893. As late as 1923, according to Richardson, 72 such tables were in operation in the Rosedale washery of the Cambria Steel Co., at Johnstown, Pa. Bumping tables probably were not used to any considerable extent except in the plant at Earlington, and at two or three plants in Pennsylvania, but they may be considered as forerunners of the present-day coal-washing table. The transition from bumping tables to the type of tables now in use signalized a revolutionary change iii table design. The advantages of the new design over the old were so outstanding as to make its adoption inevitable. BUMPING TABLES Bumping tables, as the name implies, utilized a bumping action for conveying the refuse and discharging it over the refuse end. The tables were hung from rods attached to overhead supporting beams. A shaft and cam arrangement at one end of the table served as ,the actuating mechanism and imparted to the table an endwise, back-and-forth, swinging motion. A bumping block was fixed in the proper position at the shaft end, so that the table would strike against it at the end of each backward swing. The hanger rods or stirrups were so adjusted as to give the table a slight uphill slope toward the refuse end; that is, the end next to the driving mechanism. The feed box was near the upper end of the table and designed to spread the mixture of coal and water over the width of the table. Wash water was added a short distance below the feed box. With the table in motion and coal mixed with water being fed to it through the feed box, a certain amount of stratification took place, depositing heavy refuse at the bottom of the bed in contact with the surface of the table. The direct precipitation of uranium with hydrogen peroxide has been known since 1877. Commercial use of the process began in the 1960's. During 1967 the Bureau of Mines assisted the Climax Uranium Co., Grand Junction, Colorado in the development of a uranyl peroxide precipitation process to control a molybdenum impurity problem (1). Atlas Minerals, Moab, Utah has used hydrogen peroxide to control vanadium and sodium levels in their uranium concentrates since 1969 (2). Recently, the use of hydrogen peroxide by the uranium industry has grown, particularly since the increased demand for uranium has led to the processing of low grade ores. Impurities present in low grade ores can be concentrated with the uranium during milling and will substantially complicate the refining of uranium yellowcake concentrates. Consequently, commercial nuclear fuel processors have imposed stringent specifications and penalties to control these impurities. The ability to produce a pure uranium yellowcake can eliminate penalty or reprocessing costs. Hydrogen peroxide precipitation of uranium is specific and quantitative, producing a very high purity product.

IN a single-crystal cube of iron the arrangement of the atoms is that characteristic of iron at room temperature: the body-centered cubic lattice. X-ray investigation has shown this structure to be characteristic of iron, as it has shown the atomic arrangement of other metals to be characteristic of those metals also. Rarely do substances have more than one characteristic atomic arrangement. Many physical properties of metals are directly connected with their atomic arrangements, so that changes of arrangements produce changes of properties. Only chemical change influences atomic arrangement. If a difference in the physical properties of a metal is caused by a process which involves no chemical change, the cause of the difference in properties must be sought elsewhere than in the atomic arrangement. Frequently this cause can be traced to alteration of crystal orientation. The orientation of a crystal may be defined as the relationship which the crystallographic axes bear to some quantity of reference. A cube of iron appears cubic whether it is regarded from a face, an edge, or a corner. Yet these three positions represent three different orientations of the cube with respect to the observer. It is evident that the orientation of this cube of iron, unlike the atomic arrangement, is not characteristic of iron but is entirely dependent on the previous history of the cube. Most of the processes of metal working, such as wire-drawing, rolling, and bending, change the orientation of the crystals present in the worked metals. These processes usually tend to produce rotation of the crystals into positions approaching a mean. Specimens of metals show-ing this characteristic are said to possess a preferred, orientation. Tensile strength, ductility, and many other properties are influenced by orientation changes; therefore two specimens of the same metal may show different values of these quantities. In metal specimens possessing a narrowly limited preferred orientation, these quantities will vary in magnitude in different directions throughout the specimens. One of the greatest factors in our industrial development is cheap and convenient power. Long-distance electrical transmission has now reached such a stage that it is feasible, and practicable, to utilize the water-power of the country which was heretofore too remote for consideration. In all of the changes of energy from its various sources to its electrical applications, water-power stands pre-eminent in point of economy. Power-users the world over have endeavored to utilize this force in preference to any other, and until long-distance transmission was found practicable it seemed that every available water-power in this section of the country was doing its full share for the benefit of mankind. The success of each great industrial development has been clue in a greater part to some one man one who is just a step in advance of the rest in his particular field; one who is able to grasp a situation and foresee possibilities; and, above all, one who has that indomitable pluck and perseverance which sees in each obstacle one more step toward success. Such a mail is Eugene L. Ashley, for it was through his efforts that the development of the greatest power on the Hudson river was made possible. For several years prior to 1897 the various properties along the river between Glens Falls and Palmer Falls were in the hands of speculators. These men knew the value of waterrights, but they had not the ability to assemble the properties and finance such an undertaking. In 1897 Mr. Ashley began buying these water-rights, and, after two years of litigation, title mas secured to all of the properties along each side of the river, and the Hudson River Water-Power Company was organized to construct a dam and transmit power to the surrounding cities and villages. The influence of three important para- meters which affect the induration of iron-ore pellets, viz temperature, time, and lime content, have been assessed in terms of internal pellet structure and commonly-used pellet quality criteria. The pellets studied were produced from a typical hematite ore from the Pilbara area of Western Australia, using a 25 cm dia. pot-grate test rig. Isothermal laboratory induration tests were conducted in accordance with a statistically-planned programme. The internal structures were studied by optical microscopic examination of polished sections of the test pellets. The effects of SFCA (silico- ferrite of calcium and aluminium) and slag formation, matrix consolidation and grain modi- fications were studied, and have been related to pellet properties and to the time/temperature histories produced by the firing conditions chosen. The implications of the data for commercial pellet plant operations are discussed.

The Supervisory Computer System at Cities Service copper mine and concentrator at Miami, Arizona was installed at Pinto Valley in the spring of 1975. Design and specification [l] of the digital system was initiated jointly by key plant personnel at Pinto Valley and staff of Cities Service Research and Development Company. The Pinto Valley digital system [2] may be classified as a supervisory control system of hierarchical design. There are three fully independent satellite computers which retrieve and reduce the raw plant data from each of the three main operating areas - the primary crushing plant, the fine crushing plant, and the grinding and flotation plant. While the three satellite computers are core resident systems, the master computer is a disc-based operating system which also interfaces with a computer controlled on-stream x-ray analyzer system. Figure 1 illustrates the basic system configuration [3]. The software systems required to support a large system are quite diverse and vary greatly in function. The philosophy followed in dividing the software into three categories was designed to: 1) fully utilize existing process knowledge of technical staff; 2) delegate certain software tasks to outside sources already skilled and trained in software development; and 3) maintain final control over the design and operation of each system.
