Turkey is the main boron minerals producing country in the world. The most important boron minerals are tincal, colemanite and ulexite. All mining, beneficiation and handling operations generate fines which cause ecological and economical problems. Utilization of this accumulated material requires both upgrading and agglomeration. The aim of this research was to exploit the ulexite fines by improving their grade and size. Attrition-scrubbing followed by washing and screening was employed for upgrading the fines. It was found that the grade can be increased from 23-25% B2O3 to 29% B2O3 with 73% recovery. Briquetting was applied as the size enlargement process. During the briquetting, the effect of moisture content, pressure, amount and type of binder, and drying on the quality of briquettes were investigated. The tests showed the possibility of production of strong briquettes by adding water alone, but the briquettes had no resistance to abrasion and water. Binders, namely boric acid and borax have been added to improve the properties of briquettes. The results showed that the compressive strengths and abrasive resistances of briquettes obtained with both binders were acceptable. However, the briquettes have no water resistance properties.

Dada la remoción del material mineral o estéril a quebrantarse, es de vital importancia la elección y el uso adecuado de los explosivos en la explotación minera de Atacocha. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del texto señala la eficacia de la voladura de explosivos según el tipo de mineral a romperse y la geología del yacimiento. La selección de detonantes es de acuerdo a su peso sobre la base de su potencia relativa comparada con la nitroglicerina. Entre la selección de explosivos en trabajos mineros subterráneos se considera las siguientes características: potencia, velocidad, sensiblidad, resistencia al agua, densidad y gases producidos por la explosión. Así como el método de carga, diámetro de taladro, clases detacos usados, el modo de atacar, diámetro del cartucho y la demanda de explosivo en el mercado. El método de carga requiere que el explosivo sea flexible para llenar los espacios vacíos del taladro y prevee que el uso de cartuchos plásticos faciliten las cargas en taladros verticales usados en nuestros stoppes de corte y relleno. Cabe recordar que la resistencia de los cartuchos a la humedad no siempre se aplican al agua puesto que en las minas de Atacocha, su impermeabilización es de lo más común. De otro lado, las mechas se componen de tres o más capas impermeables y las cápsulas se fijan a las mechas de seguridad por medio de alicates especiales. Finalmente, los explosivos utilizados el yacimiento de Atacocha, se seleccionaron de acuerdo a las características físicas de las masas de roca y mineral que influyen en el problema de su arranque (tenacidad, fragilidad, dureza, plasticidad de la roca misma, planos de estratificación, exfoliación, grietas y quebraduras), sin encontrar dificultad en su voladura dada la suavidad del mineral como de las rocas.

Cemented Paste Backfill has proven to be of critical importance to the operation of a number of Canadian mines, primarily due to the rapid backfilling rate this method permits. In order to improve the efficiency of this backfill system (i.e. optimize binder contents, fill fence design, and the employment of two stage filling strategies) there is a requirement to better understand its geomechanical behaviour. In response, in-situ experiments have been conducted in long-hole stopes to quantify the evolution of total earth pressures and pore pressures at a series of instrumented points within both the core of the backfill and close to fill fences. The deflection of fill fences as a result of paste loading has been measured and additional instrumentation has also been employed to measure cement hydration, negative pore pressures, and blasting induced vibrations within fresh and cured paste backfill. Installing geotechnical instrumentation within an open long-hole stope can be an extremely complex procedure and this paper details the methods that have been successfully employed. Preliminary results are presented, and the pressures induced by backfill with differing binder contents, at a number of different in-stope locations are considered.

A novel fracture-plane control blasting technique with particular application in wall-control blasts in mines employing medium to large diameter boreholes is described. It consists of a string of nested holes, each nest consisting of a large diameter charge-hole flanked on either side by a small diameter satellite hole. Each nest is shown to be an analog of a pressurized hole with diametral notches along its length. This 'equivalent-notched' hole concept for generating controlled fractures along preferred directions has been successfully investigated in the laboratory and in the field. The technique has been used to generate controlled fractures on a quarry bench in highly jointed limestone. The resulting blasts with a 250 mm diameter central charge-hole and 50-75 mm satellite holes show that two nests of such holes almost 5 m apart could be joined by a single co-linear fracture. The design range of diameter ratio between charge-hole and satellite hole is 3 to 6 and spacing is 3 to 5 charge-hole radii. With careful matching of explosives and decoupling, and combination of diameter ratio and spacing, it would be possible to connect two nests of such holes more than 20 charge diameters apart by a single controlled fracture plane. The relative merits of the technique against existing wall-control blasts are discussed, and guidelines for practical fracture-plane control blast designs are discussed.

THE ore that is being treated by the present plant lies between the leached zone, or capping, and the mixed sulfide and oxide zone. The principal copper minerals are chalcanthite (CuSO4.5H20), brochantite (CuS04 3Cu (OH)2) and atacarnite, (CuC12.3Cu (OH)2). There are, in addition, some other minerals such as cuprite and kröhnkite (CuSO4. Na2SO4.2H20). These minerals, with many others, occur in a greatly crushed granodiorite rock. Most of the copper-bearing minerals occur in the cracks and veinlets, but there are disseminated values and it is probably the relative proportion of these that accounts for some otherwise unexplainable variations in extraction. The entire mineralization of the ore is complex and varies with depth. This variation, the problems presented thereby, and the effect of various constituents of the ore will be taken up in detail. Leaching studies were carried out on Indian Ocean manganese nodules using sulphuric acid as the lixiviant. By leaching the nodules with 8 per cent sulphuric acid for 12h at 100°C, copper and nickel could be completely extracted along with 50 per cent cobalt and 6.2 per cent manganese.94.2 per cent of the iron was also dissolved. To increase manganese and cobalt extraction, charcoal was used as a reductant. The role of charcoal was to reduce the manganese dioxide and render it soluble as manganese sulphate as well as to facilitate solution of the cobalt minerals associated with the manganese dioxide. Various leaching parameters were studied including acid concentration, amount of reductant, leach time, pulp density and leach temperature. It was found that by leaching the nodules with 10 per cent sulphuric acid at 100°C for 4h using 5 wt/wt per cent charcoal (0.05g of charcoal per g of nodule) almost complete extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese could be achieved. However, under these conditions all the iron present in the nodules was also leached.

A computer model, which quantitatively utilizes the relationship between the interactive and dynamic processes of methane drainage, mining, and ventilation, is presented. The model includes simulation of the coalbed methane reservoir for prediction of gas-emission rates under the influence of degasification wells and longwall mining, ventilation network-generation, and ventilation simulation. As mining progresses step-wise through the coalbed-methane reservoir, the ventilation network is created and subsequently simulated, iteratively determining fan requirements to safely reduce methane concentrations. The model can be used to quantitatively study the effectiveness of methane degasification on the ventilation system in a longwall panel.

"A recent pilot-plant program carried out at Rio Algom's Quirke uranium mine at Elliot Lake, Ontario is described. The goal of the research was the production of tailings basin effluents which were low in total radium-226. The process tested involved precipitation of radium with barium chloride and sedimentation in plastic-lined settling ponds. Adjustment of the tailings basin overflow from its normal value of pH 9.5 by addition of sulphuric acid to about pH 7.5 was found to give approximately a five-fold improvement in total radium-226 removal. A five-month demonstration test resulted in an effluent with a mean total radium-226 activity of44 pCi/L after 2.5 days settling time and 29 pCi/L after 5 days. The results from the demonstration program are used to propose a schedule of achievable total radium-226 activities where precipitation and sedimentation are employed. The maximum suggested values for 5 days nominal settling time are: 30 pCi/L in an annual mean, 45 pCi/L in a monthly mean. 60pCiIL in a weekly mean and 80 pCi/L in any single grab sample.IntroductionRadium-226 has been removed from effluents at the Elliot Lake uranium mines since the introduction of the first barium chloride treatment system in 1965. Current practice, which has changed little over the years, consists of radium-barium sulphate precipitation by the addition of a low do se of barium chloride to the clear overflow from the tailings basin(l·2l. Provision is made for the precipitate to settle in large natural or constructed ponds and lagoons. The residence time in these ponds, which depends on the site, ranges from 3 to 35 days, with varying degrees of efficiency being achieved."

It is a distinct privilege to have the opportunity of addressing this group today. Although I, myself, am not a mining engineer, I have always had profound admiration and respect for those of you who each day live and work according to the tenets of Murphy's Law. Murphy, as some of you may know, was an Irish philosopher whose sole contribution to his field was the observation, "In the mining industry, if anything can possibly go wrong, it will!" You have heard this afternoon a variety of papers, touching on or describing in some detail imminent problems which presently face the coal industry. Many of these problems show no signs of diminishing. Actually, there is good reason to believe that they will intensify as governing bodies pass additional enabling legislation and regulatory agencies adopt more stringent "Rules and Regulations". In many cases, these groups are seemingly oblivious or indifferent to either cost factors or technical problems involved in achieving the desired goals.

Froth flotation processes are carried out in flotation cells that are grouped into banks, and these banks are interconnected, forming a flotation circuit. A literature review shows the existence of papers related to flotation circuit design based on mathematical programming. However, due to the complexity of solving the mathematical model in most of the work, it is considered that a small number of species is present in the feed to the circuit, which differs from practice. In addition, simple bank models are generally used. This paper presents a methodology for designing mineral concentration circuits that overcomes the problems mentioned. It allows the use of more suitable cell or bank models and the inclusion of several species. The methodology is based on two phases. The first phase identifies the set of optimal structures using discrete values of stage recoveries, solving several mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems. In the second phase, the optimal design for each of the structures obtained in the previous phase is determined using a suitable model for the recovery at each cell or bank, which results in a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The design of a copper concentration plant with eight species and the design of a zinc concentration plant with three species and five size fractions by species are used to validate the proposed methodology. The structure of the cells in the rougher and cleaner banks deliver structures that are novel.

The original patent for the gyratory crusher was granted to Philetus W. Gates in 1881. This first crusher was used by the Buffalo Cement Co. At the time these early gyratory crushers were developed all mining and quarrying, either underground or open pit, was done by hand; tonnages generally were small and product specifications simple and liberal. Likewise plants were small and demands for small product sizes practically nonexistent. In addition to substantial amounts of hand labor, the available material handling equipment was small, simple, and not suited to handling large run of mine ore. Mine can, cable ways, or belt conveyon transporting crushed material to the mill had limited capacity per hour. At the turn of the century the largest Gates crusher, the No. 9, had a receiving opening of 21 x 48 in. with a three-arm spider and a 21 x 80-in. opening with a two-arm spider. The steam shovel began to change the entire picture of open pit quarrying. As a result of the use of steam shovels around 1910 crushers with 48-in. receiving openings were built; thus it can be seen that the basic gyratory crusher was developed prior to World War I. The improvement of the internal combustion engine and the use of pneumatic tires created a new set of operating conditions. Early mines were small, using shrinkage stoping and small mine can. The capacity of material handling was small, limiting the size of the largest piece and the feed rate. Improved material handling resulted in more and more large open pit mines with large shovels and a tremendous increase in the size of off road or mine haul trucks or rail can. Primary gyratory crushers also increased with receiving openings as large as 60 in. and connected hp of 1,000.

Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at the intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from the deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along the margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

Self-diffusion in iron has been measured during rapid a-r transformations using a variant of the Kryukou and Zhukhovitskii diffusion method. The study was performed by thermally cycling iron foils (1 to 6 cpm) through the transformation (=910°C). Some foils have been subjected to over 1000 cycles and some have spent more than 15 pct of their total diffusion time in the process of transformation. The experimental results show that the a-r transformation has no measurable effect on self-diffusion in iron. The study is completed by a quantitative analysis of mechanisms which can affect the diffusion rate during the transformation. The analysis confirms the experimental results. SINCE diffusion is an important factor in many solid-state transformations, it is of interest to study how it is affected by the stresses generated during these transformations. Clinard and Sherby1'2 were the first to make a study along these lines. They measured diffusion coefficients in Fe-FeCoV couples subjected to slow thermal cycling (1.5 cph) through the a-r transformation range. They found an enhancement of diffusion by a factor of about two. The purpose of the present paper is to report measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient of iron during much more rapid thermal cyclings (1 to 6 cpm) through the a-r transformation (-910°C). These more rapid cyclings produce higher strain rates during the transformation and should emphasize any possible influence of transformation upon diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL Iron foils, 25 to 35 µ thick, were cold-rolled from 99.92 pct pure iron and annealed in pure helium for 2 hr at 870°C; the resulting grain diameter was about 150 µ. Specimens 0.5 by 8 cm were cut from the foils and I7e55 was vapor deposited on one of their surfaces. A 38 gage alumel-chrome1 thermocouple was spot welded in the middle of one of the specimen long edges, Fig. 1. Two 38 gage chrome1 wires were also spot welded along the same edge on each side of the thermocouple; they were placed 2.5 cm apart and used for electrical resistance measurements. In order to prevent twisting and crumpling, the specimens were pinched between two quartz plates 0.1 by 1 by 7 cm and the assembly was close fitted into a 1 cm ID quartz tube. Four holes were drilled through the tube to let the 38 gage wires out: these were connected to the recording equipment by means of extension wires. 20-gage nickel wires fixed at both ends of the specimens were used to thermally cycle the foils by Joule heating. The above described device was placed in a 2.7 cm ID quartz tube which in turn was placed in a tubular furnace. Either a pure helium atmosphere or circulating hydrogen was used during the experiments. Specimens were subjected to thermal cycles between a minimum temperature To and a maximum temperature Tm at rates ranging from 1 to 6 cpm. This was obtained by maintaining the furnace at a constant temperature near the minimum temperature To and periodically passing an electric current through the specimen. Cooling was achieved by heat losses to the surroundings. The forms and periods of cycles were varied from one specimen to another; however, each specimen was subjected to one type of cycle only. The temperature and electrical resistance variations of the specimens were recorded as a function of time. The temperature curves were used for diffusion calculations while the electrical resistance curves were used to monitor the transformation and to determine its starting point and its approximate duration. Diffusion was measured by the method developed by Kryukov and zhukhovitskii3 and modified by Angers and Claisse.4,5 In this method a metallic foil is coated on one side with a radioactive isotope and the activity is measured periodically on both sides during the diffusion anneal. Three key areas of C.I.P. plant design, viz. leach- ing time, adsorption and the gold loading on the carbon, are discussed and illustrated with examples. The need for accurate pilot plant data for use in assessing and optimising design is emphasized. This approach should minimize capital and maximise return on capital. It is demonstrated that, as regards adsorption, economics favours short retention time, high gold loadings and mechanically agitated, draft tube reactors. INTRODUCTION Little attempt appears to have been made in Australia to design the present generation of C.I.P. plants to achieve an economic optimum. Most would, seem to have been based on pre- liminary leaching data, gold extraction and value and rule of thumb which, in general, has led to over design and over capitalisation. An essential step to effective economic design is a comprehensive pilot plant study to establish definitive operating parameters, yields and reagent costs. In most cases the cost of developing this data will be more than offset against capital savings in plant; the operating profit should be increased substantially, and profit is maximised for known

Over the past few years the rising production costs, shortage of skilled labor, and increased use of lower grade ore bodies have all added justification for the use of on-stream analysis. A rise in the number of on-stream units indicates that this type of assay is now being accepted as a necessity. On-stream analysis is a much more rapid means of obtaining true assays of a flowing product when compared to wet chemistry or "grab" samples dried, briquetted and assayed by x-ray. In contrast, on-stream analysis uses real time samples assayed every 30 seconds while each stream is assayed every 5 to 15 minutes. It is very important not only to know that a change has occurred in the process, but to know what caused the change and how to correct for the change. For example, in a tailing sample the elements of interest comprise between 1% and 10% of the sample. The remainder is water and gangue. Previously the gangue was not assayed nor were the low atomic number elements used for corrections. In addition to the demand for higher accuracies some concentrators were being penalized for excessive Ca or in some cases 5i in their concentrates. This penalty was being imposed by the smelter in order that they could better cope with pollution problems and prolong the life of their furnaces. But until Ca, 5i, and S are measured on-line, nothing can be done about their control. By accurately measuring these light elements on-line, a complete assay is obtained of the total sample providing improved accuracy for the important products. The justification for complete accuracy assays is now even more obvious because they are possible at very 1ittle increased cost and at no increase in analytical time.

Ceramic build-ups are synthetic mineral deposits formed in critical locations in or near the throats of inductor units in channel induction furnaces, the preferred melting and holding furnaces used in iron foundries. The build-ups are undesirable because they slow down melt circulation, increase power consumption and cost. and decrease the quality of the metal. This study involved the determination of the mineralogy of build-up samples and the quantitative measurement of phase abundance in those build-ups by cathodoluminescence microscopy. These undesirable deposits usually are hard and dense and contain variable amounts of entrained metallic iron. The non-metallic phases dominantly consist of oxides and silicates of several refractory elements, AI, Mg. Ca, Si, and Fe. Minor amounts of the sulfides of Ca. Mg, Fe and REE elements, especially Ce and La. and the oxides and silicates of Ce and La elements are locally present in the build-ups. The build-up samples were found to be ideally suited for study by cathodoluminescence, which has provided an easy means for rapid re-cognition of the phases present in the build-ups. The phase compositions were determined by electron microprobe analysis. The phases identified and their characteristic cathodoluminescence shown in the ceramic build-up samples were: spinel (bright green, blue-green, and red). forsterite (red and purple), periclase (dark reddish-brown, blue. and orange), corundum (red, blue, orange, and white), anorthite (yellow, yellow-green, blue, and blue-purple), hibonite or calcium hexaluminate (dark green), mullite (dull red-brown), gehlenite (deep blue), silica(dark brown, pink, purple, red. and blue), monticellite (light violet blue and light pale yellow-orange), silicon carbide (orange), oldhamite (bright yellow and orange). Ce-La silicate phases (purple), and glass (orange, dull red, and purple). Non-luminescent phases were: hercynite, Fe-oxides, Ce-La-oxides, Fe-sulfides, and metallic iron.

In the comparison and consideration of synthetic and natural materials, graphites represent a situation in which natural graphites amount to less than 10% of the total carbon and graphite production by weight, and less than 5% in dollar volume, There are few applications where it could not be re- placed by synthetic graphite. On the contrary, synthetic graphite materials can be engineered to cover an extremely wide range of applications. These include electrographite brushes for rotating machinery, pyrolytic graphite, graphite-impervious pipe, nuclear moderators, high purity spectrographic graphite, power tube anodes, graphite rotary shaft seals, and rocket nozzles. The special qualities of natural graphite and its limitations are delineated and the almost unlimited possibilities in artificial graphite materials are discussed.

This paper, based on brief field examination and on data supplied by the operators, records the condition of the Italian mercury industry as of March 1945, not long after Italy's collapse. Except for the once-Italian but now Yugoslavian Idria mine near Trieste, virtually all the known mercury deposits are in the Monte Amiata district in Siena and Grosseto Provinces, 75 miles north of Rome. This district contains the Abbadia San Salvatore. the Siele. the Argus, and the Cerreto Piano mines besides numerous prospects and unproductive mines. Under pressure from Germany the principal mines were highly productive during the early part of the war, but production fell off long before its end. All of the mines were damaged in some way at the German withdrawal but by September 1944 the Abbadia had resumed production and several others were only lacking power by the early spring of 1945. The Monte Amiata district is characterized geologically by a thick series of sedimentary rocks that range from Triassic to Eocene in age . and are surmounted on Monte Amiata itself by a thick cap of extrusive trachyte. Bodies of travertine and of landslide detritus, younger than the trachyte, are rather widespread. The structure is complex and little known but most of the ore deposits seem to lie along or near a major, north-trending fault or on associated cross-fractures. Cinnabar is the only important ore mineral and clay minerals are by far the most abundant products of hydrothermal alteration. A southward increase in the amount of stibnite, relative to cinnabar, suggests horizontal zoning. The grade of ore ranges from 0.60 to 3.0 Pet and the reserves, as compared with those in American mines, are enormous. Even in the face of war-time scarcities, the mines are remarkably self-sufficient and labor is plentiful, but the costs of production are estimated to be not greatly below those of the better American mines. Notes on the principal mines, on the mining and metallurgical methods, and on the manufacture of synthetic cinnabar are included in the paper. Introduction With but few brief interludes, Spain and Italy, including the Idria mine near Trieste, which has passed from Austrian to Italian to Yugoslavian hands in the Past 3 decades, have led the world in the production of mercury, or quicksilver, for many centuries. Despite their enviable position with respect to the supplies of a metal so essential in both war and peace, there is a notable lack of up-to-date information in America on the mercury industry of either country. Duschak and Schuette' and Schuettez,3 give by far the best summaries in English known to the writer, but the latest firsthand report cited by them on the Italian mines was published in 1915.' Having been deeply interested in the geology and economics of mercury for several years, the writer naturally felt most fortunate in being the to obtain enough firsthand information on the Italian industry to fill at least a few of the gaps in our knowledge. The opportunity came during the war, soon after this industry, together with the rest of Italy, had capitulated to the Allies. Many of the facts presented here are thus definitely "dated," but others are of less transitory nature, and even the dated facts should be of interest in showing the strength and

Under pressure from Germany the principal mines were highly productive during the early part of the war, but production fell off long before its end. All of the mines were damaged in some way at the German withdrawal but by September 1944 the Abbadia had resumed production and several others were only lacking power by the early spring of 1945. The Monte Amiata district is characterized geologically by a thick series of sedimentary rocks that range from Triassic to Eocene in age . and are surmounted on Monte Amiata itself by a thick cap of extrusive trachyte. Bodies of travertine and of landslide detritus, younger than the trachyte, are rather widespread. The structure is complex and little known but most of the ore deposits seem to lie along or near a major, north-trending fault or on associated cross-fractures. Cinnabar is the only important ore mineral and clay minerals are by far the most abundant products of hydrothermal alteration. A southward increase in the amount of stibnite, relative to cinnabar, suggests horizontal zoning. The grade of ore ranges from 0.60 to 3.0 Pet and the reserves, as compared with those in American mines, are enormous. Even in the face of war-time scarcities, the mines are remarkably self-sufficient and labor is plentiful, but the costs of production are estimated to be not greatly below those of the better American mines. Notes on the principal mines, on the mining and metallurgical methods, and on the manufacture of synthetic cinnabar are included in the paper. Introduction With but few brief interludes, Spain and Italy, including the Idria mine near Trieste, which has passed from Austrian to Italian to Yugoslavian hands in the Past 3 decades, have led the world in the production of mercury, or quicksilver, for many centuries. Despite their enviable position with respect to the supplies of a metal so essential in both war and peace, there is a notable lack of up-to-date information in America on the mercury industry of either country. Duschak and Schuette' and Schuettez,3 give by far the best summaries in English known to the writer, but the latest firsthand report cited by them on the Italian mines was published in 1915.' Having been deeply interested in the geology and economics of mercury for several years, the writer naturally felt most fortunate in being the to obtain enough firsthand information on the Italian industry to fill at least a few of the gaps in our knowledge. The opportunity came during the war, soon after this industry, together with the rest of Italy, had capitulated to the Allies. Many of the facts presented here are thus definitely "dated," but others are of less transitory nature, and even the dated facts should be of interest in showing the strength and

INCREASE OF CATASTROPHE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITYIn the last couple of decades the frequency of natural catastrophes has increased dramatically. This realization results from the statistical analysis of the comprehensive loss data that we have been collecting constantly over the last 30 years and have evaluated in connec-tion with the preparation of our "World Map of Natural Hazards", which is now in its second edition (Munich Re, 1988). Each month brings data on between 30 and 50 new loss events. Fortunately, however, only a few of these have to be added to the list of major natural catastrophes, that is only those involv-ing damage that considerably exceeds what the country or region concerned can handle itself so that substantial na-tional or international aid is required. That is generally the case if the number of dead runs into the hundreds or thousands, if tens or hundreds of thousands of people are rendered home-less and if the total economic loss is in the region of US$ 100 million. These major catastrophes, about which we have fairly comprehensive data even in the case of those that occurred farther back in the past, numbered only 14 in the 1960s but 70 in the 1980s; they there-fore increased over a period of 30 years by a factor of 5. The trend is also very clear when we consider the total economic loss, which - adjusted for in-flation - increased during the same period from an average of US$ 3.7 bil-lion per year to US$ 11.4 billion, i.e. by a factor of 3.1. The insured losses, finally, increased by as much as a fac-tor of 4.8.
