The observation method is a design optimization approach for the drill and blast method in tunneling. This method includes first identifying the hazard scenarios through site investigation, formulating suitable solutions, obtaining feedback during construction, and finally using that data to optimize the design methods. This paper illustrates the application of the observational method for T-48, a railway tunnel project in the Himalayas. It is a 10.2 km long tunnel with a parallel escape tunnel and 26 cross passages. The use of observational methods in this project optimized the overall tunnel design and considerably saved the overall project cost.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a broad program of exploration of various proportion in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in the fall of 1943. As a part of this project, exploring was done at theLittle Pittsburg property in 1945. The work included driving a 500-foot crosscut from the No, 6 level and drilling four diamond core drill holes to test the behavior of the Little Pittsburg vein at depth. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyses samples and performs beneficiation tests.The Bureau's exploration of the Little Pittsburg vein was one of the activities of the Albany Division of the Mining Branch, S. It was investigated the effect of the addition of bentonite on the physical propertiesof pellets produced from fines of manganese ores. Cold-bonded pellets were produced. Pellets bearing up to 1 wt% of bentonite were submitted to strength compression resistance tests, fatigue of pellets to impact and maximum height of fall tests. A correlation of resistance of the pellets and time for curing were stablished. The produced pellets match the conditions for raw materials used in electric smelting hrnaces to produce manganese based ferro-alloys.

Foram estudadas as microestruturas de quatro juntas soldadas de aço inoxidável austenítico produzidas através do processo MIG/MAG com diferentes gases de proteção, dentro de um projeto que visava estudar o comportamento de juntas soldadas de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos a altas temperaturas. Utilizou-se o metal de adição 22.12.HT e diferentes gases de proteção: 100% Ar, Ar + 2% CO2, Ar +4% CO2 e Ar + 20% CO2. Para cada mistura gasosa, foi soldado um corpo de prova. Estudouse a variação das frações volumétricas de ferrita delta em função dos diferentes gases de proteção utilizados. Observou-se aumento no teor de carbono e consequente diminuição das frações volumétricas de ferrita delta nos metais depositados com gases de proteção com maiores concentrações de CO2, evidenciando-se que o carbono é um forte estabilizador da austenita nos aços inoxidáveis austeníticos.

Supplying ventilation in underground metal mines can be one of the most energy demanding services required to support production activities. Consequently, as energy, in the form of electricity or combustible fuels can be expensive and their unit cost is expected to increase, there is significant interest in reducing the overall demands of a mine?s ventilation system through such initiatives as controlling ventilation based upon demand and exploring other power alternatives to the current usage of the diesel engine in mobile mine vehicles. However, determining the benefit of any energy saving technology is complex and not universal applicable across the industry, consequently they have not been widely adopted. For these technologies to succeed they must be strategically applied based upon sound business cases. The intent of this paper is to provide information on some of the prospective control strategies and their potential impact on the power consumption related to supplying ventilation.

"Because of high cost and shortage of primary resources of Ni-base superalloys, revert alloys can be used as a part of charging materials for production of superalloys ingots. The current study is based on recycling of IN738LC, a Ni-base superalloy, using 30% and 50% reverted alloy and balanced amount of virgin raw materials. Therefore, it has been attempted to cast an alloy with references to standard chemical composition and mechanical properties. After charging and casting in vacuum melting furnaces, chemical composition verification and non-destructive tests (i.e. Penetration and Radiography Tests), quality of samples were evaluated at elevated temperature by stress-rupture test. Results acquired from chemical composition and mechanical test indicate that cast ingots using 30% and 50% reverted alloy is reliable and consistent with the quality control requirements.IntroductionIn recent years, there have been many fluctuations in cost and availability of raw materials which are extremely determining in Ni-base superalloys production. Accessibility to the high purity metals such as Cobalt, Molybdenum, Tantalum, Niobium and etc. have been problematical during the past decades. Therefore, shortages of critical raw materials beside the economical considerations motivated the alloy suppliers and investigators to study and find alternate sources such as reclamation and recycling of scraps [1].There are a lot of reasons for the necessity of recycling; perhaps the most justifiable one is that consumers themselves produce scraps. For example, the weight of a finished superalloy product could be less than one-third of the cast alloy weight and in the case of complicated machined parts; this portion may reach to one-tenth [2]. High values of constituents, reduction of energy consumption and environmental concerns have all strengthened the obligation of recycling in Ni-base superalloys.Because of the high degree of risk in usage of improper materials for production of turbine blades, a delicately controlled program for recycling is needed. Depending on the type of scraps, this program can define the recycling procedure, required instruments, allowable percentage of scrap for usage and finally confidence level of the process."

The development of the Moura Coal Preparation Plant is described, commencing with the first'stage of the plant commissioned in 1963. The subsequent expansion stages are traced through to October, 1973. The plant has undergone frequent stages of expansion and modification and this process is continuing. The development programme for 1974 is described as proposed in late 1973. The characteristics of the Moura and Kianga field coal seams with respect to washability are summarised and some comment is made on the blending of these coals prior to washing, to ensure production of export grade coal within specification.

Regional Tertiary formations and basins of local sedimentation which contain uranium deposits west of the Rocky Mountains are mainly of Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene age (fig. 1). The host rocks have been derived mainly from intrusive and extrusive igneous rock. The major host formations which cover broad geographic areas include the Esmeralda, Truckee, Humboldt, Thousand Creeks, Payette, Panaca, Cedarville, Coso, and San Joaquin Formations. Local areas of Tertiary sedimentation containing uranium deposits occur near Yuma, Safford and Artillery Peak, Arizona; Dillon and Canyon Ferry, Montana; Spokane Indian Reservation and Pend Orielle River, Washington; Topaz Mountain, Utah; Stanley Basin, Idaho; and Sonora Pass, California. Uranium deposits in these sediments have been classified into five categories based on environment (fig. 2). They are: (1) Deposits in lake sediments consisting mainly of water-laid tuffs; (2) Deposits in lake sediments intruded by volcanic plugs; (3) Deposits in lake sediments interbedded with arkoses near batholiths; (4) Deposits in coarse volcanic sediments in local sedimentary basins; (5) Deposits in arkosic conglomerates in local sedimentary basins.

"In January 1974, the Minerals Division of Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. made the strategic decision to add uranium to its active exploration commodities and through compilation studies selected northern Saskatchewan as the most attractive and cost-effective exploration area in Canada. In August 1974, 100 sq. miles were staked adjacent to Gulf Minerals' Rabbit Lake deposit and east of the Esso Minerals Midwest boulder train. Initial exploration was based on geologic models of the Rabbit Lake deposit.In the summer of 1975, surface surveys delineated radon anomalies which were drilled that winter and found to overlie anomalous concentrations of uranium in the regolith which forms the upper unit of the crystalline basement. Within the crystalline basement, one hole intersected graphite and pyrite with anomalous nickel-cobalt-arsenic. Geochemical and radiometric surveys followed in the summer of 1976. Drilling in the winter of 1977 intersected several zones of graphite and also anomalous, but uneconomic, uranium abundances. Also in 1977, Dahlkamp and Tan (1977) described the coincidence of graphite and uranium at Key Lake and ground EM surveys on CanadianOxy claims detected graphite conductors beneath 250 ft of Athabasca sandstone. Inco Limited joined the project in April 1977 as a 50% partner. The project area was then surveyed using the airborne INPUT EM method, which detected 84 miles of conductors, with associated graphitic metasediments. On the ground these were located with MaxMin surveys, and follow-up drilling located the ""Tent"" Lake uranium zone.In 1978, the Midwest and Dawn Lake discoveries were announced, 7 miles and 2 miles west of the Joint Venture (J.V.) claims; and, in part for this reason, the 1979 winter drilling was concentrated on the deeper west side of the property. Exploration hole 102-79 intersected altered and uraniferous rocks, but stepout holes were barren. Drill hole 153-79 tested an under-snow three-station radon anomaly east of hole 102-79 and intersected 33 feet of 7.51 % U3O8, confirming the disco very of the McClean North zone. The geophysical grid of the McClean North conductor system was extended and detailed a strong, continous conductor to the south, called McClean South. This was drilled in January 1980and hole 1004-80intersected 22 feet of 2.95% U3O8."

A series of flotation experiments was carried out to study the interaction between the parameters of pulp density (mass per cent of solids in feed slurry) and frother addition (on the basis of solid mass feed rate). It was found that certain combinations of pulp density and frother additions caused large losses in yield. The interactive effect of these parameters can be primarily attributed to the total amount of frother added per unit of water. Consequently it is suggested that frother additions be made on the basis of water flow rate. As frother addition increased, in terms of the amount of frother per unit of water, yield increased rapidly but above an addition rate of about 10 g/tone it reached a plateau. Such results correlated well with qualitative visual observations of changes in bubble size and dispersion, with increasing levels of frother addition.

In the movement of self-controlled direct-current machinery, particularly shortwall cutting, machines, from one place to another in coal mires, "nipping" or it stinging" has been practiced quite commonly. These terms refer to the method of obtaining current for propelling or tramming the machines along trolley haulageways by sliding the trolley trip (hook or nip), which terminates one conductor of the trailing cable, along the trolley wire. This is usually done by the machine operator or runner while sitting on the machine truck and holding the nip terminal against the trolley wire as the machine travels along the rails. This procedure is objectionable for several reasons. Under the best conditions, the area of contact between the nip and trolley wire is snail end, consequently, sparking and flashing ore most likely to be continuous as the machine proceeds. This is undesirable, not only because of the detrimental effect of electric flashes upon eyesight, but because of the pitting and roughening the trolley wheels which decrease the efficiency of current collection by locomotive trolley wheels and shoes and at the same time shorten their useful life by increased wear.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines methodology developed to incorporate factors of coal production (mining and cleaning methods, recoveries, economics, etc.) into the definition of recover-ability of a coal resource. Project procedures and computer models that were developed to include mine and preparation plant production rates, recoveries, and costs are explained. The results of these procedures and models are reviewed and compared to the Energy Information Administration estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "demonstrated reserve base." The Matewan 7-1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected to demonstrate the methodology.

"The conditions to prepare U3O8 by calcination from ammonium diuranate were optimized, and the response surface design method was applied to analyze the influence on the total uranium and U+4 of calcination temperature, calcination time and mass of sample. A quadratic equation model for the total uranium and U+4 of U3O8 was built and the effects of main factors and their corresponding relationships were obtained. The analysis of variance shows that calcination temperature and calcination time significantly affected the value of total uranium and U+4 of U3O8. The optimal calcination conditions were as follows: calcination temperature 931.83 K, calcination time 24.32 min and 43.89 g. Under these conditions the value of total uranium and U+4 of U3O8 was 84.78% and 28.02%, respectively. The validity of the model was confirmed experimentally and the results were satisfactory.IntroductionNuclear energy is clean, effective, and a sustainable from of energy. It plays an important role in overcoming the impending global energy crisis, and in reducing energy vulnerability. In addition, nuclear energy is a possible cheaper and cleaner source of energy compared to fossil fuels, with no not really, mining of uranium produces CO2 contribution to green house gases [1]. Uranium dioxide, one of the most important fuel pellets used as nuclear fuel in light water reactors, is manufactured by calcining ammonium diuranate to triuranium octaoxide, followed by its reduction to uranium dioxide using cracked ammonia at 700°C [2]. Earlier attempts to optimize the important calcination process through several common techniques have not yielded desirable results [3]. These techniques either rely on the classical one parameter at a time approach that ignores the combined interactions between physicochemical parameters, or are theoretical in nature. Furthermore, these techniques also require large number of experimental data to be generated [4]. In order to produce triuranium octaoxide in an optimized manner, which considers the interaction of different process parameters [5], there is a need to adopt a multivariate statistical technique."

At elevated temperatures the oxide of silver is unstable in the air at atmospheric pressure, consequently no external oxide scale forms upon pure silver under conditions of high-temperature annealing. When small quantities of certain alloying elements are present in the silver, the formation of a thin external scale is possible1 and in addition there may form a subscale composed of the oxide of the solute element precipitated within the body of the silver. Norbury2 and Leroux and Raub3 have reported internal oxidation (subscaleiormation) in alloys of silver with 2, 7.5, and 30 per cent of copper. The presence of the subscale is believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the objectionable "fire mark" in Sterling silver.4 Several other alloys of silver, after oxidizing heat-treatments, are known to exhibit undesirable polishing characteristics that may be the result of internal oxidation. Except for the absence of an external scale of silver oxide, it is to be anticipated that silver alloys will prove to be very similar in their oxidation behavior to the alloys of copper, the oxidation characteristics of which have been studied in some detai1.5,6 The present research confirms this anticipation. The oxidation of a series of 20 dilute alloys of silver has been studied metallographically; some types of subscale not encountered among the copper alloys have been found. Instances of internal oxidation in alloys of most of the metals of the 1-6 and VIII groups of the periodic system are on record, but evidence of this type of oxidation in alloys of the metals of the intermediate groups is lacking. A number of the metals of the intermediate group, among them cadmium, lead, tin, and zinc, appear to provide the conditions essential to subscale formation; i.e., they form oxides with a relatively low negative free energy of formation, they dissolve other metals that form more stable oxides, and, presumably, oxygen will diffuse through them. In a study of 40 alloys of these white metals only a few cases of internal oxidation have been found. The probable reasons for this difference in behavior will be discussed presently. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) . THE manifold inconveniences resulting from the absence of a uniform standard of mass for determining the weight of precious stones have long been obvious. This lack has been keenly felt in commercial transactions, and those who have devoted time and research to the study of historic diamonds and precious stones have had frequent occasion to deplore the absence of such a standard in the past. In a paper read in Chicago in 1893, before the International Congress of Weights and Measures, held in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition, the writer suggested dividing the carat into 100 parts, and constituting a standard international carat of 200 mg. ; that is, 5 diamond carats or 20 pearl grains to a French gram, making 5,000 carats or 20,000 pearl grains to a kilogram. He also called attention to the fact. that while this would depreciate the present diamond carat or pearl grain only about 2.5 per cent., it-would abolish the troublesome discrepancies between the various carat-weights now in use, and could be easily explained and understood everywhere.1 The subject of the various diamond carats, their incongruity, and the resulting confusion as to the correct. weights of historic gems when definite records of them are searched for, has been fully treated by me in an extensive study of this subject in The Book of the Pearl.2 To the earnest and unremitting efforts of C. E. Guillaume, Director of the Bureau Internationale des Poids et Mesures at Sèvres, is largely due the eventual success of this eminently desirable reform, which he has constantly urged both by articles on the subject and by addresses delivered in Paris before the International Committee for Weights and Measures.2

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines efforts in the research and development of a new and innovative mine lighting system which is based on fiber optics technology. The new lighting concept offers significant advantages over conventional systems in the areas of both safety and long- term maintenance costs. An overview of Bureau research into the problems and limitations of present-day mine lighting systems is also presented.

To reflect on the early history of mining in South Australia requires considerable imagination and rashness. The people who were the chief actors in the scene have long since passed away. Accounts of their activities are hazy and debatable. A broad brush account is all that I can hope to accomplish under these circumstances. It is fitting that a picture be painted and possible lessons learnt from the achievements of our pre- Decessors.
