Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine-safety stations, and to F. H. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, France, and Germany. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine-safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as in the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres, should such atmospheres through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by those countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The first of these surveys will cover conditions in Great Britain.

Between 1977 and 1984, No. 26 Colliery, at Glace Bay in the Sydney Coalfield, suffered from a series of 37 rock/gas outbursts. These events were characterized by the complete pulverization of a sandstone which was propelled into the mine roadway and an associated release of methane gas. The events began to appear at a depth of 700 m and increased in intensity and damage to the excavation as the mining depth increased. At the time of the closure of No. 26 Colliery (as a result of an unrelated fire), these outbursts were the subject of intensive investigation. Although No. 26 is now closed, there is concern that similar events could appear at Phalen Colliery where current development work is proceeding at a depth close to the 700 m threshold. Past investigations into rock/gas outbursts included studies of in situ stresses, the simulation of outburst events in the laboratory, investigations into the potential for destressing an& degassing of problem sandstone and the development of numerical models to assist in the design of openings in outburst prone ground. However, despite this work, methods of predicting outburst conditions are presently limited to examination of probe hole cores for core discing, and methods of working under such conditions are limited to boring and firing and using volley firing techniques to initiate any outbursts while workers are safely out of the heading. During this investigation of worldwide occurrences of this phenomena, literature obtained suggested that outbursts might generate microseismic precursors. An intrinsically safe (IS) microseismic monitoring system was designed and developed based on CANMET's rockburst monitoring system currently in use in hardrock mines, and installed in a development roadway at the deepest extent of the Phalen Colliery. The system will record microseismic activity associated with development work to try to identify characteristic precursors of outburst-prone conditions. This paper describes the steps taken to identify a microseismic system suitable for use at Phalen colliery, of which part of the requirement was that it be IS and approved for use in the Sydney Coalfield. The modifications to the selected system are described, along with its capabilities and the preliminary results of its performance over the first few months of use.

The Cle Elum nickeliferous iron deposit is in Kittitas County, Washington, in a rugged, mountainous region about 23 miles north of the town of Cle Elum. The Biewett Pass deposit, which is similar in character and occurrence, is in Chelan County, about 18 miles east of the Cle Elum deposit. A more or less continuous ore zone may extend between the two deposits, since iron ore is reported to have been discovered at Iron Mountain, which lies directly between them. The ore probably was formed by meta-morphism of laterite resulting from Ieach-ing of serpentine derived from peridotite. It consists largely of magnetite grains distributed through a matrix of limonitic material containing a small amount of hematite and chromite. Many of the chromite grains have shells and inclusions of magnetite. The magnetite grains range in size from 1200-mesh to 1/4-in., the average size being 48 to 65-mesh; the chromite grains range from 20 to 150-mesh. The gangue minerals are olivine and serpentine with a small, amount of chlorite, and appear both as very thin bands in the ore and 's minute fragments in the limonitic matrix. The nickel is present as minUte inclusions of a nickel silicate mineral within the magnetite and gangue par- ticles, varying in size from 1500 to about 280-mesh. Detailed analyses of 3000-lb. lots of Cle Elum and Blewett Pass ore are given in Table I. A wide variety of roasting and leaching tests were made on both raw and reduced ore, but in most of the tests little or no nickel was extracted, and in none did the extraction exceed 50 Per cent. Uninterrupted shaft operations are an important economic factor in mine operation, and good shaft support is an important aid in preventing accidents and interruptions. More permanent supports can cut the hazards, costs, and delay incident to replacement of conventional timbers, especially where subject to decay. Installation of prestressed, precast concrete shaft supports in 100 feet of shaft at the Banner mine, Lordsburg, N. Mex., nave a satisfactory permanent installation in a section of shaft that had given trouble with conventional timbering. Use of rock bolts supporting gunited wire netting around the rock walls of the shaft prevented sloughing. No attempt was made in this paper to arrive at comparative costs of installation of various types of support. However, it was indicated that use of a lighter weight aggregate would be desirable in further use if prestressed precast members as placed in the Banner mine.

The purposes of this presentation are: (1) to discuss the actual as well as potential incidents that have caused and that could cause groundwater contamination at uranium in situ leach mining sites and (2) to discuss remedial actions and solutions that have been or that could be implemented in the future to stop or prevent serious groundwater contamination from in situ leach mining in Wyoming?s Powder River Basin. Open pit, underground, and existing and proposed in situ leach uranium mine sites in the Powder River Basin are shown in Figure 1. In situ leach mining or solution mining for extracting minerals in liquid form is a relatively new addition to the list of conventional mining methods currently used to extract uranium in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Basically, the in situ leach mining method involves: (1) the injection of a leach solution lixiviant (an acidic or basic oxidizing solution) into a uranium-bearing ore body, via injection wells, to complex the contained uranium, (2) mobilization of the uranium complex from the host material via creation of a soluble complex salt, and (3) surface recovery of the solution bearing the uranium complex via production wells. Uranium is then separated from the leach solution by conventional milling unit operations (ion exchange).

The research to be described is directed to the construction of an instrument that detects methane in air. The principle on which it is based is that methane gas absorbs infrared radiation in the wavelength range of about 3.2 to 3.4 micron. Solid state p-n junctions of composition In, .97Ca.03As emitting radiation in a band centered at 3.3 micron were grown by liquid epitaxy on InAs. Fight separate growth cycles and a total of 200 diodes were measured to determine total power, wavelength peak, spectral. half width and reproducibility of the method. In order to compensate for temperature changes, dual emitter systems (one InGaAs, and one InAs diode) mounted on the same TO-5 header were made. These devices were imaged, using a folded optical path cell, on large area InAs detectors, grown by a planar diffusion technique. In the 0-50°C range the primary temperature sensitivity is in the InAs detector rather than in the emitters. Several methods to reduce the overall temperature sensitivity to within acceptable limits were demonstrated. Humidity was shown to have a negligible effect on the measurements.

The contents of gangue minerals, such as A1203, P205, crystalline water and so forth in the iron ore imported to Japan tend to increase year by year, Though the increments of such gangue contents are approximately 0.1-0.2 mass%, some problems for the blast furnace operation in ironmaking process have already been reported, In order to clarify the mechanism of harmful effect caused by the small increment of gangue minerals, mainly A1203, on the blast furnace operation, the dripping behavior of FetO-CaO-SiO2-AI2O3-MgO slag from the iron funnel, which simulated the micro-porosity in sinter ore, has been observed with the wide range of basicity, Al2O3, FetO and Mgo contents. The effect of MgO on the dripping behavior of slag has been summarized in this paper, It was found that the addition of 2mass% MgO resulted in large increase of hold-up on the most of the conditions. When FetO content was less than 20mass% and the basicity was lower than 0.8, MgO lowered the hold-up even if the slag contained 10mass% Al2O3. Every slag hold-up showed the minimum at the basicity of less than unity on the conditions of constant FetO and A1203 contents. This trend became remarkable when the slag contained 2 mass% MgO.

The United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado at the University of Colorado has conducted experiments to determine the amount and composition of the noncondensable cases evolved when crude shale oil is distilled under pressure. Hydrogen sulphide is one of the components found in the complex mixture of uses produced by the distillation of shale oil under pressure. This paper deals with the apparatus and method used in determining the amount of hydrogen sulphide evolved in the laboratory experimental cracking stills.

In a previous paper presented at the 1966 Annual Meeting of AIME we reported our work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal.' The initial evaluation based on that work demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper we presented selected test data that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of our data as follows: ? Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity- versus-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones.

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is practicable in a reactor where the exothermic heat of reaction is removed by circulating large quantities of recycle gas through a catalyst bed of high-voids content. At an hourly space velocity of 1100, the feed gas, a mixture of 1.5 parts hydrogen to 1 of carbon monoxide, was converted 90 percent, producing hydrocarbons predominantly in the gasoline range. At these conditions a recycle-to-fresh gas ratio of 40:1 was enough to give excellent temperature control with a pressure drop of 1.5 p.s.i. per foot of bed using a steel catalyst in the form of lathe turnings. Steel parallel plates, although offering lower resistance to gasflow, were less reactive and less durable. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a research and development program since 1944 on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a synthesis gas--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va.; and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting the carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

The Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of the Natural Gas Association of America, has conducted a study of leakage losses from natural-gas transmission lines. This study has shorn that surveys to determine the leakage from transmission lines lead to line repair work that not only aids in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show financial returns of large magnitude.2 In order to conduct the study, it was necessary to develop accurate and reliable methods of determining the actual leakage from pipe lines. METHODS OF TESTING Three methods that were developed and used to determine the leakage losses from high-pressure natural-gas transmission lines are: (1) The "pressure-drop" method, (2) The "metering-in and metering-out" method. (3) The "metering-in" method.

The influence of cooling rate from 1873 to 1473 K on the size and morphology of austenite grains was studied using a Fe-O.I5 % C-I.5 % Mn alloy. The experiments were carried out at three different cooling rates of O.33KJsec, O.67KJsec and air-cooling. The austenite grain showed an isotropy at 0.33KJsec but maximized anisotropy at O.67KJsec and become much less. anisotropic. In order to account for these phenomena, a model was developed for estimating the size and morphology of austenite grains as a function of cooling rate. The driving force for the )( phase formation from 0 phase is caused by undercooling degree due to cooling rate and energy barrier is restricted to the misfit strain energy which is caused by mismatch between )( phase and 0 phase. The )( phase from 0 phase could be formed on not random orientation index systems but specific orientation systems depending on cooling rate.

MANGANESE and its ores have been recently dealt with in comprehensive papers to the Iron and Steel Institute by Sir Robert Hadfield, and in a series of papers read before the A. I. M. E. at the Cleveland meeting. I have taken the opportunity of adding this mineral, to my records of the "World's Mineral Production and Consumption," as recently pub-lished in the Economist ?. The tables bring out the following significant facts: The world's production has increased by 10 per cent since 1913. India's production has increased by 3 per cent since 1.913, the supply from this source now being 31.1 per cent of the world's output. Russia is now producing at about half its pre-war rate and yields 19 per cent of the world's production. West Africa supplies 12.5 per cent of the world's total output. Brazil's present output is 2.5 times that of the pre-war period, being 11.3 per cent of the world's output.

F. G. SMITH.-Probably someone will ask whether I discovered why the bottoms of the large shells broke out. I did not, as a result of this investigation. An experiment was made along the lines indicated in this paper, to determine whether abnormal grains greatly affected the physical properties of brass. Two ordinary test bars were annealed for 1/2 hr. at 750° C. and physical properties determined on one. The other was covered with indentations made with a peen hammer and then reannealed. for 5 hr. at 750° C. It was found in the tensile test to be made up of large grains 1/4 to 1/2 in. in diameter. The physical properties, however, differed from those of the first bar only as much as might be expected after a 5 hr. anneal under normal conditions. It appears then that the large grains produced in this manner do not ruin the physical qualities of the brass.

This paper discusses modern practices in the extrusion of steel. Particular emphasis is given to a description of the Ugine Sejournet method of extrusion, involving the use of glass as a hot work lubricant. Other methods are also mentioned. A brief history of extrusion is presented; present practices in the quality extrusion of tubing and solids are described; and the future potentials of the) process as a tonnage producer are briefly discussed. The advantages of extrusion and the reasons for the use of a glass lubricant, as well as the various methods of using glass, are given. The process, as described, is being used in the manufacture of large commercial quantities of stainless steel tubing and sections. This extrusion process is an essential and unique means of forming such atomic-age materials as titanium, zirconium, molybdenum and other super alloys all of which are materials required in the creation of nuclear installations.

"INTRODUCTION One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and the mineral industries. Research is undertaken in connection with these problems to determine the explosion and ignition hazards of combustible gases, liquids, and solids and to investigate means of reducing them.Occasionally the Bureau is asked to determine inflammability or ignition temperatures to enhance safety in nonrnineral industries. From time to time it has complied with such requests when no other agency was available to do the work and the investigation could be conducted with a minimum of time and expense. The present investigation is one of this class.Nicotine (C10H14N2), a colorless combustible liquid having a boiling point of 246°C, is usually obtained from tobacco and its products by extraction processes. When heated to its boiling point it decomposes; the purified product is obtained from tobacco extractions by distillation at reduced pressures or is distilled in a current of inert gas.It has an unpleasant odor, a burning taste, and in the undiluted state is highly toxic. Under certain conditions it can be oxidised to nicotinic acid and in the near future may therefore become of considerable economic importance. Nicotinic acid is a component of the vitamin B complex now commonly used to fortify white flour and other foods that normally are deficient in these vitamins."

DURING the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth-why and how it occurs-were treated in papers by Howe,1 Jeffries,2 Sauveur,3 Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 McAdam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,10 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size specified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filaments" wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix." This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,13 in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels, 14.11 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Reflection will show at once that if growth forces are great in comparison to inertia or resistance to growth, many crystals start to grow and, for that reason, none becomes very large, whereas if inertia is predominant no growth at all takes place. Precambrian granitic pegmatites on the west, south west, south and southeast slopes of Storm Mountain, Larimer County, northern Colorado, were explored and mapped geologically 1956-1959. The area between Crystal Mountain Mining District on the north and Hyatt pegmatite mine area on the south was nearly inaccessible until a company built an access road, which was completed in 1959, into Roosevelt National Forest and its jeep-type roads. The area is extremely rugged, rising from some 6,000 feet on the highway at Drake, on Big Thompson River, to an altitude of over 10,000 feet at the summit ridge of Storm Mountain. Almost innumerable pegmatites of every possible type of granitic pegmatite intrusion infest the Precambrian gneisses and schists of the southwest-tilted fault block of Storm Mountain. The major bodies stand at least 100 to 200, feet high above the surrounding forest floor. Core drilling has shown that some extend to at least 200 feet below the surface. They blunt out at the southwest, some keel out below and others are faulted out at their southwest ends. Strike length ranges from 200 to 600 feet. The massive bulky bodies have nearly vertical walls. Contents are zoned or ribboned and layered. They consist of local commercial bodies of beryl, potash feldspar, mica, uranium minerals and quartz. As yet no lithium minerals have been encountered.

"El siguiente texto señala las etapas que comprende el proceso electrolítico del zinc empleado en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, así como la importancia de la aplicación de este método de obtención en el 40% de la producción mundial. El tratamiento electrolítico del zinc se realiza en seis etapas: tostación, lixiviación, filtración, purificación, electrolisis, fundición y moldeo. La tostación convierte el sulfuro de zinc en óxido y depende de esta primera fase la mayor recuperación del zinc. En este proceso, el concentrado se divide en dos roasters tipo Wedge con capacidad para 60 toneladas cada una. Posteriormente este aire del concentrado, es tomado de la atmósfera y conducido a la columna central del roaater a través de una tubería con válvula y un manómetro de agua, que sirve para reguiar la presión del aire a 5.8 pulgadas. Dicha presión está calculada en función del volumen de aire necesario para la oxidación. Posteriormente la lixiviación disuelve la calcina en el electrolito gastado que sale de las celdas (155 - 73-gramos de ácido sulfúrico por litro y 55 gramos de zinc) para así eliminar impurezas tales como el fierro, arsénico y antimonio con bióxido de manganeso. La tercera etapa denominada filtración separa la materia insoluble de la solución del sulfato de zinc, a través de 6 filtros rotatorios de armadura metálica de tipo Burt de 5 pies de diámetro y 40 de largo. La purificación disminuye las impurezas como el Cu y Cd, hasta un máximo de 0.5 mg/lt, reduciendo el zinc a un polvo finísimo. Para el desarrollo de la electrólisis se utlizan tanques como celdas electrolíticas, un equipo de fuerza de dos transformadores y electrodos (anodos y cátodos), elecrolitos y reactivos. La sección de fundición y moldeo, forma los cátodos de zinc para su moldeo en barras de forma comercial, con un peso de 25 kilos cada una. l, INTRODUCTION Uranium mine and mill workers are exposed to external gamma and beta radiation fields from radioactive ore. In the past the average uranium content of ores mined in the United States and Canada ranged from about 0.1% to 1.0% U308 with pockets of much higher grade ore. Holiday (1973) reported that radiation surveys in the U.S. uranium mines found mean gamma "radiation rates ranged from 0.20 to 0.70 mrem/h. Such radiation rates cause relatively insignificant exposures." Others also concluded that the external gamma radiation fields associated with uranium mining did not result in significant worker exposures (Federal Radiation Council, 1967; Simpson, S.D. [et al], 1959) Gamma exposure levels in most modern-day Canadian uranium mines are reported to be low with average annual exposures estimated to be less than 1 rem/a (Frost, S.E. [et al], 1981). However, two developments are taking place which affect the potential significance of external radiation fields in the uranium mining environment. The first development stems from the most recent system of dose limitation developed by the ICRP which is intended to limit the workers' overall risk from exposure to ionizing radiation through the adoption of a sum rule (ICRP 26, 1977) which combines external and internal radiation exposures. In the case of exposure to radon daughters the sum rule will have the effect of reducing the annual exposure limit below the recommended limit by an amount that depends on external radiation and other sources of internal exposure such as the inhalation of ore dust (ICRP 1980). The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB) is reviewing this subject and is expected to produce its recommendations shortly. Irrespective of the form of the sum rule eventually adopted by the AECB, it is clear that the net effect of the sum rule will be a collective reduction of the individual dose limits for individual exposure pathways. The second factor is the increasing development of high grade uranium deposits in Northern Saskatchewan. Some of these ore bodies have an average ore grade of 1% to 5% U308 or greater. Since the potential external radiation fields increase in proportion to the ore grade, it is apparent that increased effort in radiation protection planning is required in order to develop safe yet workable methods for mining and milling such ores. This paper is intended to provide information which can be of assistance in the formulation and development of a mining and milling plan. The principal focus of the paper is source identification and the design of radiation protection measures to limit external gamma radiation exposure. The exposure of workers to external beta radiation fields is also discussed. The paper is organized as follows: - Section 2 deals with source characterization. - Section 3 discusses the effects of finite source size and distance (i.e. geometry effects). - Section 4 presents selected data that are useful in evaluating shielding requirements. - Section 5 discusses the potential beta radiation fields. - Section 6 discusses practical data requirements for worker exposure scenarios. - Section 7 presents a variety of work exposure calculations. - Section 8 is a summary of this paper. 2. SOURCE CHARACTERIZATION This section develops the basic formulae for estimating the fluxes and doses from external gamma radiation. The calculation of the radiation flux due to a distributed source (i.e. a linear, area or volume source) as a function of distance assumes that any distributed source can be treated as a summation of point sources. [ ] Uranium ore contains radionuclides from both the decay chains of U-238 and U-235. In this paper the radioactive daughters are assumed to be in secular equilibrium with the uranium parent. (If natural thorium were present in the ore in significant quantities, the gamma rays originating from Th-232 would have to be added to the gamma rays from the uranium series). In all, there are over 50 separate gamma rays (as well as alpha and beta particles) emitted from the U-238 and U-235 radioactive decay series (USHEW 1970). The total
