"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency has been widely used by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which follows. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided. The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies. New operating conditions and process parameters are often necessary in today's industrial practice of non-ferrous smelting and converting in order to accommodate various new chemical compositions of mineral charges and environmental requirements or to conceive new and more efficient industrial technologies. An important parameter in non-ferrous smelting and converting is the liquidus surface of multicomponent slags. This surface is affected by multiple factors such as temperature, gaseous potentials, the content of each component in the slag, etc., and cannot be quantified by the existing ternary liquidus diagrams. In this work a new type of representation of the liquidus surface of multi component systems has been presented by means of a thermodynamic model. This representation waives the need of the multidimensional representation of multi component systems and yields practical two-dimensional diagrams, which can be easily used in the industrial practice.

The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.

"Abstract - Exploration for deep underground copper and nickel sulfide deposits in the Sudbury mining camp is carried out with surface drilling. More detailed drilling, with an advanced underground exploration program, may be necessary to establish an accurate interpretation of the deposit geology and upgrade the resource estimate to the measured category for reserve estimation and feasibility assessment. Resource evaluation is a lengthy and costly process that could result in a decision not to proceed with the project. For projects that proceed to production, significant reductions in the operating and capital costs could be achieved with a more accurate interpretative model of the deposit geology and mineralization. Quality control procedures to ensure the integrity of the drilling data and interpretation guidelines are essential steps in the development of a deposit model. The use of block modeling techniques and the application of geostatistics for resource estimation further improve the quality of the resource model.Significant improvements to the interpretive models can also be achieved by incorporating additional information from geophysical measurements to validate and constrain the geological interpretation. The geophysical models must be consistent with known geological environments and oreforming processes, which has required the concurrent development of comparative models from exploited deposits. These geophysical techniques can also provide key geotechnical information required for the optimum design of the mining method and mining sequence. The objective of this program is to improve the accuracy of the deposit model and the quality of the resource and reserve estimates in order to optimize capital investments and reduce the development and operating costs of underground mining projects. Several of these techniques are currently being tested at INCO Limited’s Sudbury operations. The results from those tests are presented and their applications are discussed within the framework of resource/reserve classification systems and project evaluation objectives."

The results of an inquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research 1aboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys. The B Constituent In addition to locating the limits of composition for the three principal types of structure (polyhedral ferrite, martensite and austenite) and their combinations, certain other features of the system were observed. A hitherto undescribed brittle constituent (designated here as the "B constituent") was discovered. It is very hard, non-magnetic and forms in two modes from chrome-ferrite by recrystallization. It is the stable low-temperature condition for the equal-proportion chromium-iron materials containing less than 10 per cent. nickel. Although it partakes of the nature of an inter-metallic compound, yet it may exist over a considerable range of composition. It is non-existent above a temperalure zone, varying with composition, from 800° C. to 950° C., and heating above this critical temperature develops chrome ferrite persistent after average cooling rate; a few hours just below this temperature will develop the complicated brittle crystalline type. The B constituent, when found in the grain boundaries of alloys of lower chromium content, contributes a serious brittleness removable, however, by heating and cooling rapid enough to prevent its re-format'ion. By suitable means of precipitution, the hard B constituent can be made to strengthen the already stiff alloy matrix in the manner of submicro-scopic particles, as exemplified in duralumin or the Sykes iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys. Fording Coal Limited's mine in the Rocky Mountains near Elkford, B.C. has produced 21.8 million clean tonnes of metallurgical coal from 1971 to 1980, inclusive. This production has come from several pit areas and required the removal of 149.1 million bank cubic meters of waste rock and overburden by truck-shovel and dragline operations. Waste dumps from 30m to 200m in height have been successfully constructed on natural slopes, generally between 10° and 26°. Design considerations for the dumps include foundation and soil conditions, natural slope angles and containment of weak overburden or rehandle materials. Dump control is maintained by monitoring the crest and the face of an active dump area. Crest movement is measured by extensometers locally termed "Spoil Monitors". When crest movement rates progressively increase above normal, dumping operations are temporarily relocated. Some unstable conditions and mass failures have occurred as the result of natural foundation slopes being in excess of 26°, failure of weak water saturated foundation soils or weak material being placed on the dump.

Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. It can be utilised during the early stages of a project as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phases, or alternatively to help understand the various options available in an upgrade or expansion. With the design of a new processing plant to handle a different ore type at Lihir Gold Limited (Lihir), there was concern that the existing conveying system could separately handle the increased tonnages. A simulation model was constructed which allowed Lihir to examine the impact on the conveying system of the new process plant, as well as investigate the effect of different trucking options. As is often the case, once the simulation model was built, further understanding of the downstream bottlenecks was able to be investigated, including the sizing of critical equipment.

The recent re-emergence of an Integral Pressure Stripping system which operates with both cell and column in closed circuit at elevated temperature and pressure, requires no cyanide in the eluate solution and has greatly reduced carbon reactivation requirements in seen as a progressive step in this area. Several of these re-configured IPS systems have been placed in service in Australia and overseas in the last three years, with the first of the new generation units constructed and commissioned by Como Engineers Pty. Ltd. at Mt. Fisher in the East Murchison of W.A. in September 1987. This plant was relocated to a new ore body at Darlot W.A. in February 1989. Use is made of a data base of raw plant performance figures from both Mr. Fisher and Darlot and its performance compared with other operating plants. Initial commissioning difficulties of the Mt. Fisher prototype and dis- cussed together with the modifications and operational procedures required to overcome these problems. Stripping times of less than 6 hours at 145 degrees have been achieved with barren carbon values less than l O ppm from loaded carbon values above 3000 ppm and with cell pass efficiencies reaching 90 per cent.

"U. S. marketable phosphate rock production for the 2018 crop year (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018) showed an increase to 27.7 Mt (30.5 million st) from the 2017 crop year production of 27.1 Mt (29.8 million st), as reported to the U. S. Department of the Interior by the mining companies operating in the United States during crop year 2018 (Table 1). Domestic consumption decreased in the 2018 crop year to 23.9 Mt (26.3 million st), as compared to the 27.2 Mt (30 million st) consumed in crop year 2017. U.S. imports of phosphate rock increased to 3 Mt (3.3 million st) for the 2018 crop year from the 1.81 Mt (1.9 million st) for crop year 2017. Imports of phosphate rock were from Peru and Morocco. There was an increase of 2.85 Mt (3.1 million st) in producers’ stocks from 7.45 Mt (8.2 million st) in crop year 2017 to 10.3 Mt (11.3 million st) in crop year 2018 (Table I).For calendar year 2018, Florida and North Carolina phosphate rock production accounted for 75 percent of the total U.S. production, with the balance being produced in Idaho and Utah. The Florida and North Carolina percent of U.S. production is declining. U.S. production of 25.7 Mt (28.3 million st) in calendar year 2018 was produced by five companies at 10 mines in four states and accounted for approximately 9.6 percent of the world production of 267.7 Mt (295 million st) for calendar year 2018 (Table 2).In calendar year 2018, U.S. phosphate production decreased by 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st), while companies increased stocks of phosphate rock by 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st). The domestic production for calendar year 2018 of 25.7 Mt (28.3 million st) represents 78.4 percent of the domestic production capacity of 32.8 Mt (36.1 million st).At present, China reportedly produces more than 50 percent of the world’s phosphate rock. As a result of planned expansions, Morocco production has increased from 27 Mt (30 million st) in 2017 to 33 Mt/a (36 million stpy), which is approximately 12.3 percent of the world’s production, moving ahead of the U.S. production. In calendar year 2018, the U.S. phosphate rock production was 25.7 Mt (28.3 million st), which is less than 10 percent of the world’s production of phosphate rock (Fig. 1)."

Laboratory studies were made to produce whiskers of tungsten over a wide range of operating temperatures. Hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexachloride in a vacuum furnace at temperatures from 2,7000 to 3,3000 C yielded a small quantity of tungsten whiskers, provided a low degree of supersaturation was maintained. Direct measurements of 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 psi were obtained for the ultimate tensile strengths of individual whiskers averaging 3 to 4 microns in diameter with average aspect ratios of 1,000. This compares with strengths of 300,000 to 400,000 psi for 13-micron-diameter commercial filaments.

IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

The future of science does not depend so much on the number of scientists or the number of colleges, but rather on the individual qualities and the degree of perfection of a limited group of leading scientists and colleges. These are individual factors which require inherent talent which in turn is a condition evolved after generations of culture. Thus, very elaborate higher education for indiscriminate masses of humanity or students may not necessarily show the expected results. In other words, it is possible that higher specialized education should be given only to the few talented individuals, and their capacity and worth should be judged by as highly qualified and talented teachers. Quality is the greatest of all competitive aids. An essential qualification that must be possessed by a quality mineral industries college is a high caliber teaching staff, for the mineral sciences will advance in the coming years only if the leading minds of today are made avail- able as the mental springboards for our scientists of tomorrow. Attention is drawn to the largest eruptions with dense rock equivalent (D.R.E.) volumes approx-imating 50 km3. These have been strongly clustered during the last 40 000 years, with 11 recognised in the period 35 000 to 22 000 years ago, and 10 in about the last 9000 years, but none in the period 22 000 to 9000 years ago. With the latest such eruption, at Tambora, only 175 years ago, it is likely that we remain in a period of increased activity. During the last 100 000 years, roughly the period during which modern Homo sapiens has existed as a species, there has only been one eruption an order of magnitude larger (>_ 500 km3 D.R.E.). This took place at Lake Toba, Sumatra, about 75 000 years ago, and is estimated to have deposited ash to a thickness of a centimetre or so in parts of Ethiopia, Somaliland, Saudi Arabia and Iran, and to a thickness of a few millimetres in the eastern Mediterranean. The average interval between global eruptions of this magnitude is probably about 40 000 to 50 000 years. Insufficient work on the Quaternary history of volcanoes has been carried out to suggest where the next such eruption might occur. At Yellowstone, which has been well studied, the average interval between very large explosive eruptions is about 700 000 ¦ 120 000 years.As a prerequisite for magnitude-frequency analysis of eruptions, and hazard and risk impact assessments, it is important to classify past eruptions in a consistent manner. In an attempt to find a universally applicable method to estimate order of magnitude D.R.E. volumes from the distribution of airfall tephra, an empirical correction has been derived for the elongation of tephra dispersal fans due to wind. Dispersion distances for various thicknesses of tephra, recalculated for windless conditions, have been obtained from a study of about 40 tephra isopach maps for which D.R.E. volumes have been calculated, and a range of distances derived, equivalent to D.R.E. volumes from 106 m3

THIS paper is submitted primarily to put on record the results of a number of experiments carried out at the Wingdam mine of Consolidated Gold Alluvials of B.C., Ltd., with the object of establishing a reliable method of concentration of 'wash' and a maximum recovery of gold from the concentrate. It will be generally admitted that, during the last two decades, a tremendous amount of research work has been carried out, both by private companies and Government departments, with a view to improving the technique of the recovery of gold .from quartz veins or lodes. So thorough have been these investigations that milling practice at a modern quartz gold mine is almost an exact science, carried out with meticulous accuracy. In placer mining, on the other hand, very little departure from old traditional methods can be noted, with the exception perhaps of the more modern gold dredges. This may be due to the fact that the concentration of placer gravels, up to a certain point, is comparatively easy. Only a simple equipment of sluice box and riffies seems necessary where the gold is coarse and the gravel free from clay. In the early days of placer mining, when claims were rich and fairly 5hallow, nobody worried very much about fine gold; and, if clay was present, an enlarged dump box was constructed in which the gravel was subjected to a rather desultory puddling. That large quantities of gold are lost in normal placer practice is generally admitted. Some 26 years ago, I had inspectorial charge of many bucket dredges on the Ovens river, in Australia. Occasionally it was necessary for a dredge to work through its own tailing to reach a new section, and almost without exception enough gold was recovered from these tailings to defray the total cost of moving the dredge. Since those days, the technique of gold recovery in dredging has been considerably improved and it is still receiving close attention. Outside of dredge mining, most placer operations, deep or otherwise, are as they were-notorious gold losers, paying little attention to the recovery of fine gold and taking an absurd amount of time over each clean-up. In the Cariboo district of British Columbia, the alluvial gold is usual y associated with varying quantities of black sand (magnetic) and grey sand (non-magnetic); and it can be taken as axiomatic that, if you save all the black sand and grey sand, you save practically all the gold. It is on this hypothesis that we have carried out our research work and brought our recovery system up to its present highly satisfactory standard.

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35°C (95°F) [1]. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by >5.6°C (10°F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35°C (95°F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy. INTRODUCTION The apparent temperature inside an occupied RA could be significantly affected by the surrounding environment’s thermal conditions, such as mine air temperature and mine strata temperature. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and air velocity. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures. Depending on factors such as geographic location and season, mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata, temperatures can vary significantly [2]. RAs located in cold mines may pass the 96-hour 35°C (95°F) AT limit test that poses a challenge for RAs located in hot mines. One solution in these cases is that the occupancy of the RA could be derated (i.e., the RA occupancy could be reduced) to ensure the AT limit is not reached. However, this would require mines to purchase additional RAs to accommodate all personnel in the mine. For mines with high temperatures (above 26.7°C or 80°F), the occupancy might have to be reduced so much that the necessary number of additional RAs would be impractical. In these cases, RA cooling systems could provide a solution.
