The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 26th August, 1970, at 4.15 p.m. Mr. J. K. E. Douglas (President) was in the Chair. There were also present sixty-three Fellows, thirty-five Members, one Graduate, eight Associates, five Students and nineteen Visitors, making a total of one hundred and thirty-two. The President declared the meeting open at 4.20 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: 'It is my sad duty to announce the deaths of the following members of the Institute. Dr J. A. Papenfus, Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1942 and passed away on the 28th of May, 1970. Mr D. G. Beadle, Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1946 and passed away on the 17th of June, 1970. Gentlemen, Derek Beadle was very well known in this Institute. His papers on dust will be remembered and, at the time of his untimely death, he was one of our assistant editors. ANNUAL REPORTOFTHE COUNCILAND ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th JUNE, 1970 The President: 'I now have pleasure in presenting to you, the Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for the year ended June, 1970. These have been handed to you this afternoon and, as is customary, I propose they be taken as read. Before moving their adoption, however, I would like to refer to some of the salient features, leaving as is usual, the task of dealing with the finances, to our Honorary Treasurer. It is encouraging that membership has continued to grow, and now stands at 1,613, an increase of 61 over last year's total. Your Council, however, is aware that there are still people in our mining and metallurgical industries, who could qualify for membership, but who have not yet joined the Institute. A drive to increase membership was accordingly organised, and members of Council were given the responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry, and for publicising the objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute. Up to now there has not been much reaction to this campaign, but I hope we will see results in the coming year. At the same time, Council has recognised the need for change in the conduct of the Institute's affairs in order to meet the changing needs of our membership. Our members, both mining and metallurgical, are in the first place, geographically more widely dispersed than they used to be, and secondly, with the growth of the metallurgical industry, their technical interests are now more diversified. The Institute must cope with these changing needs if we are to continue to perform a useful function. The

"The Stockman base metals project is situated in State Forest in the alpine area of East Gippsland, Victoria, adjacent to a National Park and within the headwaters of a major Ramsar-listed wetland catchment and the Murray-Darling River system. Site topography is steep, and elevated (650 m – 1200 m above sea level), and subject to circa 1 m annual rainfall, with occasional winter snowfall. The project consists of two volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits to be mined by underground methods and treated in a 1.0 Mt/a central concentrator to produce copper and zinc concentrates for export over a ten year operational life. New resource projects are rare in Victoria. Recognising the sensitive setting, planning for the Stockman Project, which is now in the advanced permitting stage, has focused on balancing economic, environmental and social outcomes to ensure social licence to operate is secured and can be maintained. This has involved close attention to triple bottom line (TBL) risks and outcomes. Stockman has successfully gained State and Federal approvals via the Environmental Effects Statement process. The process of obtaining these approvals has required close attention to effective stakeholder involvement, and management of a lengthy and difficult approvals process, which is still to be finally concluded. This paper is a case study of the process of that permitting and the issues encountered to date. Key learnings from the experience have included: successful approvals require close attention to much more than just the project and its technical aspects and physical setting – effective stakeholder involvement and endorsement is critical the differing consultation requirements for local, regional and government stakeholders, to design and plan implementation of a project to meet TBL objectives, and to gain social licence to operate within the Victorian approvals process, the need for an effective lead government agency with policy authority dealing with material policy change requiring post-closure financial sureties estimating realistic permitting time and cost during the project evaluation phase. In 1985 BMR assessed Australia's economic demonstrated resources of mineral sands as follows: rutile 8.0 Mt, ilmenite 41.4 Mt, zircon 11.5 Mt, and monazite 229 000 tonnes. These resources are located along the east coast of Australia, in the southwest corner of Western Australia, and in the Eneabba region, north of Perth, WA. However, over 40% of Australia's rutile and zircon resources, particularly those on the east coast, are presently not available for mining because of environmental considerations. As well, east coast ilmenite has been considered unsuitable for use by sulphate route pigment producers because of its relatively high chrome content. World demonstrated resources of rutile and zircon are estimated by BMR as 29 Mt and 38 Mt respectively. Demonstrated resources of ilmenite amount to about 1 billion tonnes. These occur predominantly in hard rock deposits in Norway, Canada, USSR and China, as well as alluvial deposits in Australia, South Africa and India. Quantitative data for world monazite resources is sparse. However, world production of rare earth oxides is now mainly from bastnaesite, a hard rock resource. Australia is presently the world's principal producer of rutile and zircon, and also provides a major share of the world's ilmenite. With the expected increase in Australia's rate of output of these commodities, combined with restrictions on mining along parts of the east coast, its position could diminish substantially over the next 25 years.

The effects of the growth precipitates on the su-perconduching properties of an Al- 15 al. pel Zu alloy have been studied using magneization, transition lem-perature, and residual resistivity measurements. Aging at 230C for 1/2 to 11 he produces an increase in Hfp, Ike field of first penetration, and tut increase in trapped flux. The upper critical field, Hc2 remains constant for such aging tunes. Aging at 200°C produces a decrease in Hfp and an increase in trapped flux. The transition temperature remains constant at Tc - 1.227° ± 0.02°K for aging at 220°C for tims of from 1/2 to 10 hr, and for aging at 200°C it remains constant at Tc. = 1.18° i 0.02°K for times from 1/2 hv to 26 hr. The observed behavior indicates that the superconducting matrix when aged at 220°C behaves tike a type U su-perconducior, but when aged at 200°C behares like a type I superconductor. The magnetization changes after aging can be attributed to the growth and clutnge in distribution of the precipitate in a matrix of fixed composition. IT has been realized for some time that the superconducting properties of alloys are highly structure-sensitive. This is evident in the work of Mould and Mapother1 who examined the properties of an aluminum alloy. Precipitation effects have also been briefly mentioned in other studies.2-4 Bonnin and coworkers5 have observed a sharp inc rease in trapped flux in an A1-Mg alloy when the residual resistivity reaches a value that indicates it is a type II superconductor. Recently Blanc, Goodman, and Nemoz5p have reported on precipitation effects in A1-Ag alloys. Detailed studies of precipitation in Pb-Sn and Pb-Cd alloys made by Livingston6 serve to show that the upper critical fields are enhanced by quenched-in solute. Furthermore. at various stages in the precipitation process? the upper critical field is determined largely by the remanent solute. The observed magnetic hysteresis and trapped flux in such alloys result from the interaction between precipitate and the flux filaments in the mixed state. The flux trapping appears to depend largely on the precipitate distribution and is greater if the superconductor is type II than if it is type I. To examine the effect of precipitation in another alloy system, particularly one in which the composition of the superconducting phase does not change significantly during the course of precipitation, the Al-Zn system seems interesting, especially in view of the transition temperature and resistivity studies of Chiou and seraphim.' Furthermore, the recent detailed electron-microscope studies of an Al-Zn alloy by Richards and Garwood8 provide a guide for relating superconducting properties to changes in structure. For these reasons, magnetization, transition temperature, and residual resistivity measurements for varying times of heat treatment at two temperatures were made with a -15 at. pct Al-Zn alloy. The results are reported in this paper. I) EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used was prepared by Cominco Products Inc. from 99.9999 A1 and 99.999 Zn. It was chill-cast, swaged, and drawn to 0.125-in.-diam rod. The analyzed composition was 15.6 at. pct Zn (31.1 wt pct). A jeweler's saw was used to cut the 0.125-in.-diam rod into the 0.875-in. lengths needed for magnetization measurements. The ends of the cylinders were slightly beveled to remove the sharp edges. A portion of the original 0.125-in.-diam rod was drawn into 0.010-in.-diam wire and used for transition temperature measurements. Specimens were suspended from wires within a vertical furnace during heat treatment. All were homogenized at 500°C for a minimum of 3 days and subsequently solutionized for times in excess of 6 hr. The solutionizing temperature was held constant to +3°C. Individual specimens were homogenized, quenched, and aged several times and no effects indicating loss of zinc were noted. The suspended specimens were quenched by cutting the wires and allowing the specimens to fall into a silicone oil bath held at the aging temperature. They were then isothermally transforked by aging in the same bath used for quenching. After aging for the required time (approximately 10 min aging was necessary before the upper critical field reached a fixed value), they were briefly (1 to 2 sec) dipped into an acetone bath at room temperature to remove adherent oil and then immediately transferred to liquid nitrogen where they remained until inserted into the helium bath (usually within an hour). The temperature of the aging bath was held constant to +3°C for longer aging times. The cryostat used for the measurement of superconducting properties consisted of outer and inner dewars for liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, Stokes 6-in. booster diffusion pump and Stokes Model 212 mechanical pump, temperature controller to measure and control the temperature of the helium bath, and a superconducting solenoid with inserted search coils to provide the magnetic field and measure the magnetic moment of the specimens. A schematic diagram of the cryostat is shown in Fig. 1. An ultimate temperature of 0.85°K was reached with this apparatus. The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,' it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines. The Mont Klahoyo magnetite deposit is located about 600 km (373 miles) northwest of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. During an exploration period ending in 1977 an international joint venture group investigated the deposit and proved reserves of 670 Mt (739 million short tons) grading 36% iron. The deposit occurs at the northeast end of the Baoubly-Kiriao chain of Precambrian iron formations with associated amphibolites, pyroxenites, and gneisses of the Liberian Shield. The ore body is represented by a highly metamorphosed banded quartz-magnetite iron formation with alternating beds of iron silicates and quartz-magnetite. Amphibolite-pyroxenites and sillimanite-cordierite-garnet gneisses form hanging and footwall rocks. The iron formation has been folded into an elongated, overturned 2-shaped major drag fold with axes trending and plunging approximately northeast. Beds are vertical or dip steeply to the southeast. The ore zone has an average thickness of 130 m (427 ft) and outcrops intermittently over a distance of approximately 5.5 km (3.4 miles). Based upon detailed studies of drill cores and the results of ore dressing test work, eight stratigraphic units, identified as K- 1 to K-8, are recognizable in the iron formation. Four interbedded units are low grade silicate zones (silicate facies) while the remaining quartz-magnetite units are oxide facies, representing the important Mont Klahoyo deposit ores. Ore-bearing "K" units are subdivided further into 11 ore types, based upon their specific lithologies, iron content, and concentration characteristics. Identification of these ore types proved particularly useful to mine planning and flowsheet design. A cap of oxidized material overlies the primary quartz- magnetite iron formation, but no enrichment has occurred. It is thought that the Mont Klahoyo iron formations were deposited chemically in a volcanic environment as a siliceous iron formation with volcanism the primary source of iron and silica. Metamorphism converted the siliceous iron formation to a coarse-grained, quartz-magnetite-silicate iron formation.

The history of the development of gold metallurgy in South Africa is divisible into two periods: That preceding the introduction of the cyanide process on a commercial scale in 1890; and the 24 years intervening between that important event and the present time. The period between the discovery of the banket reefs of the Witwaters-rand and the year 1890 was one of phenomenally rapid progress in mining development, but of no special interest to the metallurgist, There were no strikingly original or distinctly local advances in the treatment of gold ores. Californian practice in stamp milling and amalgamation prevailed, in mills ranging in equipment between 5 and 50 stamps, operating within a wide range of efficiency, and under the trying conditions usually encountered in a new and isolated field. The somewhat incomplete records of gold output of that period show that in December, 1887, there were 20 producing companies in the Witwatersrand district, of which 10 had mills, the largest being of 20 stamps. The only official record of returns for May, 1887, was that of the Wemmer mine, whose modest achievement with a 5-stamp mill was 100 tons crushed, producing 887 oz. 3 dwt. of gold. This is interesting in view of the present-day output of this field, which in 1913 reached 8,430,998 oz. The rapid increase of production during this first period (May, 1887, to January 1891) is shown by the following summary for the year 1890:1 Total tone crushed.................................. 702,828 Number of stamps in operation....................... 1,046 Average number of tons crushed per stamp per day..... 2.36 Yield of gold, ounces................................ 494,817 Yield per ton, pennyweights.......................... 13.36 The stamp duty ranged between 11/2 and 4 tons per day, according to weight of stamp, fineness of screen, and operating skill available. The prevailing weight of stamp was about 900 lb., and the screen, 900 meshes to the square inch.

The world has seen unprecedented economic changes in recent years, starting with the stock market collapse of 2008 and the great recession that followed. With these changes, the mining industry, like others, has been forced to find ways to adapt to the shifting and sometimes volatile conditions. It has been a bumpy ride that has not been easy. Prices for most commodities have been in a decline in the past several quarters ? albeit still well above the average prices of 10 years ago ? as the costs of production have been on a steady incline for the past 10 years. Adding to the concern was the report in April that China, which had grown at an average pace of 10 percent/year, for the past decade, slowed to less than 8 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year, catching many off guard. Even gold, once the safe haven for investors during rocky times, stumbled in April of this year, losing 7 percent of its value in two days. So what?s an investor to do ? and how can companies still attract financing? For the first time in 10 years, SME, in conjunction with the New York Local Section of SME, attempted to clear the waters of the mining finance sector with a conference focused on ?Current Trends in Mining Finance.? Held at City University of New York, Graduate Center, April 29-30, the two-day conference attracted 148 attendees and was intended for senior executives and mining industry specialists, covering a range of important topics and trends through 17 panels with about 50 speakers. The presentations came from representatives from some of the most influential companies in the mining and financial sectors, including Citi, Nomura, Societe Generale, Caterpillar, Newmont Mining Corp., Ernst & Young, Export Development Canada (EDC), KPMG, HSBC, Tocqueville Asset Management, BNP Paribas, Revett Minerals, Royal Gold, Environ and ERM.

OUR colleges and universities have met many difficulties during the past year. From a period of small enrollments and depleted faculties, the educational institutions have passed quickly to a period of the largest enrollments in their history with inadequate facilities and staffs. The results of the shortsighted policy of the Selective Service system which drained the technical schools and universities of many of the students who were potential teachers are now being felt. The movement of faculty members into positions in industry during the war years has resulted in many of them forsaking permanently the educational field for the higher salaried positions they now occupy. Competition is keen between the educational institutions, and between the institutions and industry, for technically trained men. Dean Holbrook's statement in last year's annual review that he thought it would take three or four years to restore our engineering departments to their former level in quality of instructors is even more convincing today. Somehow, the institutions must not only reach their former level in quality of instruction but they must also increase the quantity of their staffs to meet the demands of the ex-service men and the high school graduates for engineering education. The enrollments in the mineral industry fields of mining, metallurgical, geological, petroleum, and ceramic engineering, although greatly increased, are not expanding as much as in the more widely known fields of electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, and civil engineering. In fact, many educators are tremendously worried about the segregation of so many young men in a relatively few fields while the needs of others will remain unanswered.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computerized commodity flow model for strategic and critical materials This flow model is generic and applicable to most commodities and amenable to updating supply, demand, and/or production data change. The original model, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of chromium. This report follows the flow of chromium through its metallurgical, chemical, and refractory applications, and highlights areas where significant losses occur because of downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing 451,769 mt of chromium were consumed, including 99,221 mt of chromium from recycling, Chromium losses from all causes in 1989 were estimated to be 345,347 mt from a variety of areas. These areas and their chromium losses are as follows: processing losses, 38,825 mt; processing-downgraded scrap, 18,227 mt; manufacturing losses, 18,128 mt; manufacturing-downgraded scrap, 56,595 mt; prompt scrap exported, 1,531 mt; obsolete scrap exported, 43,443 mt; recovery losses, 155,529 mt; and recycling losses, 13,069 mt. Recycled chromium-containing material accounted for 22 pct of the apparent consumption of chromium in 1989.

This study examines the surface alteration and flotation behaviour of synthetic moncheite, PtPd(BiTe)2, in the presence of pentlandite. The telluride minerals contribute around 20% ~ 30% and up to 45% of the PGM present in the Platreef ore and are considered to be slow floating as there is evidence of these minerals reporting to the tailings. It was proposed that oxidation products from other minerals and grinding media would affect the mineral surface composition and floatability thereby causing inadvertent depression of moncheite due to precipitating ions. ToF-SIMS analyses (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to characterise the mineral surface as well as the extent of surface alteration. Microflotation was used to deter-mine the hydrophobicity of the synthetic minerals. Conditioning of moncheite in the presence of pentlandite reduced the flotation response of the + 38 -106µm size fraction from > 99% to 56%. This was due to pentlandite dissolution products (iron and nickel hydroxy species) which formed overlayers on the mineral surfaces thereby inhibiting the adsorption of collector. In addition, further grinding of these samples, with and without pentlandite conditioning showed a negative effect on recovery due to the fineness of the particle size distribution and there was no advantage gained from any possible exposure of fresh sites in the sample.

"Sizing below 38 µm (400 mesh) is an increasing requirement in mill testing laboratories. The Cyclosizer is gaining wide acceptance in this role. A recent alternative is to use electro-formed sieves (micro-sieves), which are available with openings down to 5 µm. The advantage of micro-sieving is a cut size which is independent of mineral density, easier retention of the fi nest fraction and reduced purchase cost. A simple method of microsieving using an ultrasonic bath, which performs readily to 10 µm, is described.A systematic study of Cyclosizing and micro-sieving is reported for three samples; silica, copper oxide and a lead concentrate. Micro-sieving gave comparable results. Comparison with a standard sizing method, the Sedigraph 5000D, revealed misplaced material in each fraction by both methods. The range for micro-sieving was from 20% to 60% depending on the sieve and material; for the Cyclosizer it was a consistent 40-50% for all cones and all materials. The Cyclosizer can be sensitive to feed mass and particle size for dense materials. It is recommended that for minerals of specific gravity greater than 5, no more than 35 g of -38 µm be used.The disadvantage of micro-sieving is that it requires continuous operator attention and sieving time depends on sample mass. To fractionate 35 g-as used on the Cyclosizer and considered at reasonable mass for mill testing purposes-through 25-, 15- and 10-µm sieves requires about 80 minutes.IntroductionParticle size has a pronounced influence on mineral separation processes. Consequently, the measurement of particle size plays an important part in mill testing. By far the most common method is by screening. This, however, is usually limited to 38 µm (400 mesh) or occasionally 25 µm (500 mesh). Increasingly, mineral products are becoming finer than this limit and consequently finer sizing methods are required."

PREVIOUS investigators have determined activation energies and have postulated various controlling mechanisms for creep.'-' Recently Barrett et 01.I5 have suggested, as the result of their work with cadmium, that the apparent activation energies for creep (AHc) above 0.5 T, could be correlated by means of activation energies for self-diffusion (AHSD) and modulus of elasticity functions: AHC = AHSD - (5RT/E) dE/dT. The wide disparity of apparent activation energies previously obtained with nickel compared to those reported for other fcc metals and the desire to test the postulate of Barrett el al. prompted this study. The as-received 17.5-mil nickel wire used during this work assayed 99.87 pct pure, Table I. X-ray analysis indicated that the wire was in a stress-re- lieved state and metallographic examination revealed an equiaxed grain size of approximately 0.01 mm. Specimens degreased in acetone and cut to 1-1/2 in. lengths were tested in a cam-mechanized constant-stress creep machine. A vacuum of at least lo-5 mm Hg was maintained during all tests. Stresses were applied when thermal equilibrium was established. When a measurable (at least 0.5 pct) secondary creep was observed, the temperature was pulsed to a higher temperature. Pulsing time varied from 30 sec at 480°C to 2 min at 1300'C and above. Slopes of creep curves were determined after the initial acceleration in the strain rate had subsided and steady-state creep was achieved. To confirm the results obtained, additional tests were performed incorporating a temperature pulsing method suggested by sherby. In this method the load was removed during temperature pulsing and reapplied after thermal expansion had occurred. No appreciable differences in results were obtained. Tests were performed over a wide range of temperature (470" to 1310°C) and stresses (250 to 17,000 psi). The expression was used to calculate activation energies. In this expression T1 and T2 are the initial and final temperatures, and el and i2 are the creep rates at T, and T2. The variation of the apparent activation energies with the mean test temperature calculated by means of Eq. [I] are shown in Fig. 1. The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.

Introduction The Sullivan concentrator treats the complex lead-zinc-iron ore from the Sullivan mine of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, to make a lead and a zinc concentrate for its metallurgical plants at Trail. Three miles separate the mine and mill, which are situated near the town of Kimberley, in the East Kootenay district of British Columbia. The orebody consists typically of banded sulphides, mainly galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite. Important factors in the concentration of the ore are its exceedingly complex and its high specific gravity. It should be remembered throughout the paper that results and figures are based on Consolidated's experience with the Sullivan ore. The present mill feed rate is 8,500 dry tons of ore per 24 hours, for an operating week of five and a half days. Grinding and classification of the ore are carried out in three stages and, in addition, there is a re-grind section which re-treats the zinc middling. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the classification in the various stages and to give the results o comparative tests which have been carried out for the purpose of improving operations in the mill. The Primary stage consists of six units, each made up of a ball-mill and classifier (see accompanying flow-sheet). Four units operate in open circuit and two in closed circuit. The secondary stage consists of eight ball-mills operating in closed circuit with twenty-one classifiers. In the Tertiary stage are two ball-mills in closed circuit with eight classifiers. The re-treatment section for re-grinding the zinc middling comprises one ball-mill in closed circuit with two classifiers.

INTRODUCTION High tellurium contents in the ancient volcanogenic massive sulfides (VMS) and modern seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) have been reported by V.Maslennikov (Maslennikov et al., 2013). However findings of tellurium minerals in SMS are rather rare. The only reported coloradoite and bi-melonite, have been found in massive sulfides from Rainbow hydrothermal field (Fouquet, 2010). Here we present data about Te - minerals in sulfide chimneys of different ages (up to 84.7 kyr - Cherkashov et al., 2010 ) from Semyenov-2 hydrothermal field. The obtained results The Semyenov hydrothermal cluster was discovered and studied in the course of cruises 30 and 32 of R/V Professor Logachev (2007 and 2009) at 13º31´ N, MAR. This area is associated with an oceanic core complex and associated with serpentinized gabbro- peridotites and basalts. Plagiogranites and tonalites have been dredged on seafloor in the Semyenov cluster area (Cherkashov et al., 2013; Pertsev et al., 2012). In total, 25 sulfides samples have been studied. The major and minor mineralogical phases were identified using reflected light microscope. Major element compositions of ore- forming minerals were analyzed on a Hitachi S3400N scanning electron microscope at the Geomodel Center, St. Petersburg State University (St. Petersburg, Russia) with an AzTec Energy 350 (EDX) detector and an INCA 500 (WDX) detector.

Physiological studies have been made in some of these mines showing the effects of various temperatures end humidities. As it is difficult to carry out studies on many controlled temperatures, it was thought best to make the experiments in a laboratory and apply the results to the industry insofar as practicableThe effects of moderately high temperatures and humidities are more difficult to measure perhaps than the extreme conditions, but may be predisposing causes of fatigue, discomfort and disease, A cooperative study of the physioloical effects of heat and humidity is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the U. The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

Natural chromium-bearing spinels (chromites), which are used as refractory materials in basic steelmaking, are the only commercially important chromium ore and are also encountered as difficult-to-separate contaminants in ore deposits of potential economic value. Techniques for characterization and separation of ore materials frequently are dependent on the magnetic properties of the constituent minerals. An experimental program was initiated to explore the effects of temperature and of simple mechanical and thermal treatments on the static magnetic properties of several ore-grade natural chromites. Studies of the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties showed that the natural chromites, which are dilute in the magnetic ions Fe and Cr, order magnetically only at cryogenic temperatures. However, mechanical treatment in the form of crushing produces a magnetic component that is ordered at room temperature and that is of sufficient strength to alter magnetic-separation characteristics. The additional magnetic component apparently is associated with surface structures which develop during crushing and disappear after heating to above about 500°C. Preliminary studies indicate that this surface structure enhances the susceptibility of the chromite grain surfaces to gas reactions at moderate temperatures.
