Segregation roasting tests were carried out on Zaire cobalt oxide ores assaying about 2% Co and 3.5 to 6.5% Cu. The major parameters tested during the laboratory investigations were temperature, dosage and type of reducing agent, dosage and type of chloridizing agent, and particle size. Results showed that standard conditions suited to the segregation of copper ores, i.e. low temperature and low dosages of reducing and chloridizing agents, resulted in the segregation of copper only, while conditions suited to the segregation of lateritic nickel, i.e. higher temperature and increased dosages of reducing and chloridizing agents, led to a successful segregation of both copper and cobalt. Under the best conditions, 88% of the cobalt and 98% of the copper could be recovered in a concentrate assaying 32.5% Cu and 8.5% Co. Alternatives to process such a concentrate are briefly reviewed.

"AbstractCurrently installed an analogue instrumentation devices at Sherritt 's Ruttan Concentrator control. and/ or measure mill tonnages, grind, pH, density , some reagent and slurry flows, and cell levels. On-stream analysis is used to assay the main process streams. The history of development of process control is reviewed from startup to the present stage of selection of a process control computer. A pragmatic approach has been taken to process control to ensure compatibility with the needs and resources of Ruttan. Emphasis is made of the need to have the mill performing well from a mechanical and instrumentation point of view and to have opera tor acceptance of the computer through training. Plans for the computer phase to achieve these objectives are outlined.IntroductionTHE COPPER-ZINC OREBODY at Ruttan Lake was discovered by Sherritt exploration personnel in 1969 and by mid-1973 a 10,000-tpd mine and concentrator were in operation. After a typical startup period , the major mechanical problems in the crusher and concentrator have been resolved. Metallurgical performance is now up to standards forecast in the feasibility study.The cost of the original instrumentation installations, including an on- stream analyzer, was about one million dollars or 4% of the cost of the milling complex. Although there was no intention of using a process control computer until the plant was operating smoothly, it was understood that all instrumentation was compatible with .a computer, but this did not prove to be correct. The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the performance of various chain pillar configurations in terms of gate road entry sta-bility. Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS's) were installed in four consecutive gate road chain pillars. Field data collected during panel retreat were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of vertical load redistribution in gate road chain pillars as it relates to ground control problems. Several different pillar configurations were investigated including abutment-yield and yield-abutment-yield designs. INTRODUCTION. THE installation of the Gayley Dry-Air process appealed specially to the management of the Warwick Iron & Steel Co., for the. reason that for fifteen years records had been kept at the works of the company, showing the amount of water entering the furnace in the form of aqueous vapor, and careful observations had been made of its effect upon the working of the furnace. Some years had proved much worse in their effect than others, on account, not only of excessive moisture, but also of great variation in the moisture from day to day, and sometimes within a few hours. It had been found impossible to. make a satisfactory percentage of high-silicon foundry-iron in summer, even on high fuel; and for some years the endeavor had been made so to arrange the sales that, during July and August, only a small percentage of the iron produced would be required to carry more than 2 per cent. of silicon. Our larger furnace, running on basic iron, year after year, produced in February a tonnage 20 per cent. higher than in August, on a much lower fuel-consumption, while, at the same time, the summer months were marked by ? messes," tuyeres closed by slips, and other irregularities, constituting serious additional business losses. It will be easily understood, therefore, that the records made at the Isabella furnace after the installation of the dry blast in 1904 possessed special interest, and were closely watched by us. Risk financing solutions are emerging to fully address environmental liabilities for mining operations. Supported by specialized insurance and alternative risk transfer (ART) products, mine owners can fund, cap and guarantee the environmental liabilities and closure obligations of a mine within a financial structure that will be acceptable to regulators. An environmental risk financing program will permit an owner to transfer the liabilities and indeed the ownership of a site to a third party that has the ability and resources to responsibly execute the closure plan. A properly structured program will be financially viable for the owner and will also respond to community and environmental opposition concerns about sustainable development and the environmental legacies associated with mining activities.

The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

The Silver Swan nickel mine is located at the Black Swan Nickel Project, 53 kin north east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The Silver Swan orebody is a massive sulphide nickel deposit dipping 70¦ east with an average in situ grade of 14 per cent. Mining of the massive orebody is by Mechanised Ramp Cut and Fill (MRCF). A mining recovery of 98 per cent and minimising dilution are primary goals in extracting the high-grade ore. Placing a distinguishable marker bed (working platform) on rock fill was identified as a key method to achieving these goals. Gravel from a pit located onsite was considered the most suitable material for the marker beds. Research undertaken to design the marker beds using the gravel revealed conventional methods used in mining would not suffice, but that road stabilisation methods could be a viable alternative. Trials used a road recycler to mix cement and gravel in situ and several test beds were constructed on the surface to determine the final design. The trials attempted to replicate a marker bed's life cycle of construction and placement and mucking of ore from the marker bed.

During the year, II2 wells were drilled in Mississippi, as foilows: wildcats drilled and abandoned, 54; wildcats producing oil, 4; oil wells drilled in oil fields, 26; oil wells drilled in fields, dry and abandoned, 10; sulphur-test wells drilled, 14; salt-water-disposal wells, 3; core tests, I. Prospecting Geophysical work in Mississippi during 1943 amounted to 1127 crew weeks, divided as follows: reflection seismograph, 809 weeks; gravity meter, 285; magnotometer, 30; torsion balance, 3. A considerable amount of core drilling was done over a large part of the state. The complete data on this activity are not available at the present time. Salt Domes To date, the following salt domes have been discovered in Mississippi: Midway, Edwards, Glass, Newman, Tatum, Oak-vale, Kings, Halifax, D'Lo, Hazlehurst, Byrd, Leedo, Prentiss, Carson, Moselle, Monticello, Ruth, Keno, Taylorsville. New Oil Fields Lincoln County.—On March 10, 1943, the California Company completed its Smith No. I in sec. 4, T. 7 N., R. 7 E., Lincoln County, as an oil well and produced 29 bbl. of 25" gravity oil in 24 hr. through a fi-in. choke. Two outpost wells have been drilled in this area by the California Company, and both have been abandoned as dry holes. Madison County. —Love Petroleum Co. completed its J. R. Anderson No. 2, sec. 2, T. 8 N., R. I W., Madison County, on Sept. 7, 1943. This well produced 135 bbl. of approximately 30" gravity- oil in 24 hr. through a )/4-in. choke. The production comes from a sand or porosity in the upper part of the Chalk formation of the Cretaceous age. Adams County.—The California Company drilled its National Gasoline Co. of Louisiana No. I in sec. 52, T. 7 N., R. I W., to a total depth of 10,383 ft., and at 10,280 ft, it perforated and obtained gas and a condensate. The well had several showings in the Wilcox of the Eocene age. Several of these showings were tested and the well finally was completed at 5888 ft. on Oct. 6, 1943, producing 44" gravity oil in the second sand in this formation. No other wells were completed in this field during the year. However, a number of wells are contemplated in the near future, and locations have been staked by the California Company. The Oklahoma Pipe Line Co. will market the oil through its pipe-line facilities. Wayne County.—The Gulf Refining Co. drilled Davis No. I in sec. 2, T. 9 N., R. 9 W. in Wayne County. After several stem tests 545'-in. casing was set at 6850 ft. and production was obtained in the so-called Massive Sand of the Lower Tuscaloosa. The well produced 359 bbl. of oil in 24 hr., and it Was completed on Oct. 4, 1943. Other locations have been staked ill this area and probably will be drilled in 1944 by

Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutionsÆ funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industryÆs concept of the unwritten æsocial licence to operateÆ is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

1. Domestic Production and Use: Twelve companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, three firms accounting for 66% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States, 25%; Northern States, 29%; and other Southern States, 14%. Output of primary metal in 1973 was valued at $2.2 billion. About 80% of the secondary recovery was from new aluminum base scrap and 20% was from old scrap. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1972, building accounted for 28%; transportation 19%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 16%; and consumer durab1es, 10%.

There are two methods of determining the fusibility or refractoriness of fire-clays, the theoretical and the experimental. In the former, conclusions are drawn from the chemical composition; in the latter, from the changes which the clay undergoes when subjeoted to intense heat. It is well to use both methods, beginning with the actual heat-test and explaining the results obtained from this by the help of the chemical analysis. In discussing the subject, however, it is better to reverse this order. I. The Theoretical Method.* Leaving out the hygroscopic and combined waters and any organic matter, as not directly affecting the fire-resisting property, the refractory constituents of fire-clay are alumina and silica, and the fluxing constituents magnesia, lime, soda, potash and ferric oxide. According to Bischof,† alumina is the least fusible component, and silica follows close upon it. If, however, a mixture of the two be heated, it will be found that its melting-point is much lower than that of alumina, as a silicate will then have been formed. The way in which silica affects the refractoriness of alumina has been strikingly presented by Seger 1 in a diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. "IntroductionEnvironmental pollution problems, caused by gases or effluents, by high noise levels or from air borne dust, are placing increasing demands of the operators, from statutory authorities, and from the general public, to adopt more stringent dust control measures. This requires that a successful plant dust control program be an integral part of any plant operation. While a successful environmental program is a key factor in maintaining productivity and good labour relations, anticipation of future environmental regulations during the plant design phase can avoid the high cost of plant upgrading, or dealing with pulmonary conditions in the work force in subsequent years.Particulate removal, conventionally called dust collection, involves the removal of coarse- and fine-particulates from the airstream. Although generally limited to that required for contro!Hng plant generated air emissions, particulate control equipment also has a wide application for air cleaning and filtration inside the plant, as well as for recovery of usable products.In the late 1950s and early 1960s the public became more concerned with the problems of air pollution. This increasing concern was stirred by an awareness of the extremes to which water pollution had progressed in many of the rivers and lakes, by increasing perception of air pollution as detected by visible smog and harsh chemical odors, by the alarming rate of increase of smog plagued cities and communities, and by specific incidents where ill health could be traced to specific episodes of air pollution. Particle size is perhaps the most important single factor affecting particulate control. Large particles (over 5 microns) constitute the major mass fraction of most sources of emission and economical control equipment dqes exist for their efficient control. However, while these larger particles frequently represent the source of soiling and unsightly smoke plumes, they are not a major health problem as they tend to settle relatively quickly, are more easily scrubbed from the atmosphere by rain, and are not able to penetrate the respiratory system. By far the most important form of particulate air pollution is the fine particulate, (below 3 microns) which is harmful to the pulmonary system. The adverse effects caused by this particulate matter on human health are for the most part related to injury to the surfaces of the respiratory system. Particulate material in the respiratory tract may produce injury itself, or it may act in conjunction with gases, altering their sites or their modes of action. A combination of particulates and gases may produce an effect that is greater than the sum of the effects caused by either individually (i.e. synergistic effect)."

"The effect of the copper and magnesium contents and quenching rate during quenching on the age hardening behavior of 2000 series aluminum alloys was investigated. For the higher copper-containing specimens as conventional alloys, like AA2024, precipitation of the stable phases increased as the quenching rate decreased under the as-quenched conditions. The maximum hardness after the artificial aging of air cooled(AC) specimens was much lower than that of the water quenched(WQ)specimens. On the other hand, for the lower copper-containing specimens, coarse precipitation did not increase even in the case of the AC. The age hardening behaviors of the WQ and AC were very similar such that the maximum hardness and aging rate were almost the same. Many parts of the fine precipitates that increased the hardness were thought to be the GPB zone or fine S’ phase for the WQ and relatively coarse S’ phase for the AC. From the calculated CCT(continuous cooling transformation)diagrams, the lower copper-containing specimens could maintain the copper and magnesium in the solid solution state during the AC, so they could be quenched at a rather slower quenching rate like the AC.INTRODUCTIONThe 2000 series aluminum alloys, containing copper and magnesium as the major chemical components, are some of the well-known heat treatable aluminum alloys. These alloys have a high quenching sensitivity, thus the age hardening ability of these alloys decreases with as low quenching rate. To prevent the decrease of the age hardening ability, quenching is done by a method such as water quenching, which is not very efficient in an industrial situation, because the method requires such large equipment. For these alloys, reducing the quenching sensitivity helps them to be produced in a rather convenient way. For example, 6000 series alloys such as A6063 have low quenching sensitivity, thus they could be quenched by only air cooling just after extrusion and they do not need water quenching. Based on these reasons, investigations of these alloys with high copper and magnesium contents have been conducted in the past to find a way to lower the quenching sensitivity by adding transition elements such as manganese, chromium and zirconium (Kanno, Suzuki, & Itoh, 1986; Suzuki & Itoh, 1986; Kanno, Sakuma, Muromachi, & Watanabe, 1988). However, very few studies have focused on the quenching sensitivity of the lower copper and magnesium containing alloys because of their usage for structural components with high strength, and most of the past studies have used only the fast quenching method like water quenching. On the other hand, from our recent results, there is a possibility to lower the quenching sensitivity of 2000 series alloys with lower alloying elements. In this paper, the effect of the copper and magnesium contents with lower alloying elements and quenching rate, especially in case of slower quenching rate than conventional quenching method, on the age hardening behavior of the 2000 series alloys is investigated by the hardness measurement, structure observation and thermal analysis."

Since 1922, when a brief report3 on the production and utilization of garnet was issued by the Bureau of Mines, there have been a number of interest—in developments in the technology of that mineral. Greater activity has been displayed in mining, new mills have been erected, and more attention has been paid to improvements in milling so that a more efficient and economical recovery of garnet has been possible. These activities have resulted in larger production; therefore, attempts are being made to broaden the market for garnet abrasives, and to find new uses for the unusual combination of physical properties than this mineral possesses. The writers have recently completed a field study of the occurrence, methods of mining and milling of garnet, and the manufacture and utilization of abrasive garnet products. This preliminary report indicates the most important sources of garnet, the methods by which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is utilized.Chemical and Physical Properties.The term ""garnet"" is applied to a closely related group of minerals which crystallize in the caste forms and possess similar physical properties, although their chemical composition may exhibit greater variation. The chemical composition of the garnet group may be represented by the general formula 3R"" O.R""' 203.3S102, in which R represents the bivalent elements calcium, magnesium, in the manganese state and ferrous iron, R"" represents the trivalent elements, ferric iron, aluminum and chromium in the chromie state. An account of the amorphous substitution of the different bivalent and trivalent elements, specimens whose composition may be represented by a definite formula are rare, the composition of any given specimen generally exhibits treat complexity.
