As part of the British Steel Corporation?s development plan during the 1970?s, it was decided to concentrate its bulk steelmaking processes based on the BOS at 4 major Works with access to deepwater ore terminals, for the supply of high-grade imported ores. These 4 sites were at: - 1. Rarenscraig Works in Scotland where the ore terminal would be hilt at Hunterston on the west coast some 50 miles away. Bavenscraig was already an integrated Works but suffered from having to discharge ore 27 Glasgow tenxinus on the River Clyde, which could only accommodate vessels up to 25,000 tonnes. In the future, ore was to be unloaded at Runterston and shipped by a rail-link into Ravenscraig, The new ore terminal would have the potential to unload vessels up to 300,000 tonnes. - 2. Port Talbot Works in south Vales where the existing harbour was developed to discharge large ore carriers. This again was an existing Integrated Works and the benefits of the new harbour also applied to Llanwern Works which was another integrated Works some 50 dies to the east, which would now receive ore from Port Talbot.

The oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bi, Pb, Sb, As, and Cu contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 2.6 wt.%, 7.2 wt.%, and 8.6 wt.%, respectively. Twostep simulation results indicated that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As, and Cu increased from 60.1%, 32.3%, and 27.5%to 81.6%, 67.8%, and 47.2%, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1050 °C to 1250 °C. While the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0% and 2.7% to 15.2% and 13.3%, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 °C to 700 °C.

The relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent, of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent, or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also of his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics, compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa, to be due in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are due to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 21/2 years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management—in short were due to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. The Red Dog Mine is a high-grade zinc-lead mine located in northwest Alaska which began operations in November 1989. In June 2014 the upper half of a charge in a trim shot in the Aqqaluk pit deflagrated. No other holes in the area were observed to react and the remainder of the pattern was shot without incident. This was the only known case of a deflagration in the 25 years of operations. As part of the investigation into the cause of this incident rock samples were obtained from the area of this hole and from other areas in this pit.

The Valzinco mine, Spotsylvania County, Va., is a lead-zinc deposit with minor quantities of copper. The property was reopened n 1942 by Panaminas, Inc. The Bureau of. Mines, in an effort to increase the reserves of the deposit to justify greater production, diamond-drilled nine holes totaling 4,213 feet during 1943. Drilling by the Bureau delimited the original ore body and discovered another ore body on the hanging-wall side, which was being developed by the company at the close of the project.

Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst-prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) micro-seismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characterisitcs are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.

Vatukoula is credited with the second largest population in the Colony of Fiji. Within an area comprising 550 acres are living approximately 4,500 people. Of these, about 1,150 Fijians, 90 Rotumans, 90 Europeans, 180 Part-Europeans, 180 Indians and 30 Chinese and miscellaneous Pacific islanders are employees of the Associated Mining Companies.The remainder is made up of employees dependants with a small minority of tradespeople and Government servants, such as storekeepers, school teachers, police and post office officials.To appreciate fully the work involved in the administration of this unusual community it is necessary firstly to know something about the various types of people which compose it.The FijiansAlthough the Fijians are of Melanesian stock their physical characteristics indicate a Polynesian strain. Natives from all provinces in the Colony are to be found in Vatukoula and their varied types point to this MelanesianPolynesian intermixture. Saganoseki smelter & refinery operated two flash smelting furnaces, producing a combined 330,000 metric tons per year (hereinafter mtpy) of copper. [n 1996, however, it successfully shifted to a single fumace operation while maintaining production at the same level. Since then, the production capacity has been further increased to the present 470,000 mtpy by technological improvements. Also, in order to reduce the converter load which represents a bottleneck in efforts to increase production, the matte grade was gradually increased and currently runs at 65 to 66% attaining the low copper content in the slag (hereinafter slag loss) of 0.7 to 0.8%. This ' paper introduces some improvements, recent operation results and thermodynamic analyses.

This paper, embodying information acquired by the writer in his work in connection with the Geological Survey of Minnesota, is presented by permission of the State Geologist. Historical.—On November 16, 1890, the workmen of Captain J. A. Nichols, of Duluth, Minn., encountered in a test-pit on the northwest quarter of section 3, township 58, range 18, west of the fourth principal meridian, the body of soft ore now called the Mountain Iron mine. Hard ore, chiefly magnetic, had been known for many years on the Mesabi range, and explorations made by Mr. E. W. Griffin, of Minneapolis, near the falls of Prairie river in T. 56-24 and T. 56-25, and by John Mallmann, at the Mallmann explorations, T. 59-14, had revealed some hard hematite interbedded with quartzite and low-grade soft ore; but this was the first discovery of merchantable hematite on the range. Captain Nichols had been exploring more or less along the range for some two years. To him and to the Merritt brothers, of Duluth and Oneota, who, unshaken in Faith by the discouraging reports of explorers, miners, experts, and geologists, had persevered in the search for ore, great credit is due for the final success, and large rewards have accrued to them already.

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

"Several recent cases indicate that the Courts may be leaning toward a more favourable treatment of mine closing and related costs. In this article, we look at two recent cases, Burnco Industries Ltd. and Nomad Sand & Gravel Ltd. The former was heard before the Federal Court - Trial Division and the latter before the Tax Review Board.It appears that in certain situations mining companies may now be able to sustain current deductibility of estimated mine closing costs during the productive years of the mine, rather than waiting until either the date on which mining ceases or the reclamation and similar activities commence. This would be of great benefit to the mining industry, as waiting until the bitter end often means that there are no revenues available against which the expenses may be offset and, hence, no tax relief.IntroductionUnder the Income Tax Act in Canada, taxpayers are not permitted any deductions in respect of an outlay or expense in determining income from a business or property, except to the extent that such expenditures are made or incurred by the taxpayer for the purpose of gaining or producing income. In addition, no deductions are permitted for amounts transferred or credited to a reserve, contingent account or sinking fund except as expressly permitted by the Act.In large measure, these provisions are relevant to the mining industry to the extent that they determine the periods during which expenses may be charged against revenues for income tax purposes. Several recent cases have indicated that the Courts are leaning toward a more favourable treatment of accrued costs in the mining industry than was previously considered to be the case."

Supercompressibility factors, Fpv, were derived from experimental compressibility data for five helium-nitrogen mixtures containing from 50 to 100 pct helium. These Fpv values are required as volumetric correction factors for or if ice meter measurement of "crude helium" (helium-nitrogen) purchased by the Government in a program of helium conservation. Although compressibility measurements were made by the Burnett method (2)3 - for pressures from 100 to 3,400 psia and temperatures from 40° to 100° F, Fpv values were needed only for pressures from 400 to 2,000 psia. Consequently, values at increments of 2° F, 2 pct helium, and 10 psia were tabulated only for the required pressure range. Values for pressures outside this range can be calculated from information shown in the tables. Values for the second, third, and fourth coefficients in the equation Z = 1 + BP + CP2 + DP3 are also included.

"The zinc-lead deposit of the Lake Geneva Mining Company is on lot 7, con. VI, Hess township, Sudbury district, Ontario, about 10 miles northwest of the northern rim of the Sudbury Basin. Though a relatively small deposit, it shows some rather interesting relations to cross-cutting, pre-ore, quartz diabase dykes, which merit description.The deposit was discovered in October 1924 by J. H. Collins beneath iron-stained drift and oxidized sulphides. This proved to be the northwestern extremity of the orebody, the remainder of which extends southeast below swampy ground. Exploration began in 1927. In 1928 a vertical shaft was sunk to 250 feet and a level established at 235 feet. Later the shaft was deepened to 400 feet and new levels opened at 315 and 375 feet. In 1943 an inclined winze was sunk below the vein from the 315-foot level to a vertical depth of 640 feet, and two additional levels were opened at 525 and 615 feet respectively.The geology of the area has been described by T. T. Quirke (1), F. F. Osborne (2), F. J. Alcock (3), and Ralph Tuck (4). Private reports have also been made by Carl Tolman, J. E. Gill, and K. W. Fritzsche. Tuck's paper, covering the work completed to 1930, gives a detailed account of the character of the ore and enclosing rocks.Up to May 1944, when the property was closed, all ore above the 375-foot level and a small tonnage from below this elevation had been removed. A method of predicting uranium extraction rate in underground bacterial leaching of as-blasted ore has been developed. The method is based on the hypothesis that extraction is directly proportional to the volume of a piece of ore that is penetrated by the leaching agent, and that each piece of ore, regardless of size, has been penetrated radially from the external surface to the same depth at a given leaching time. Consequently, given an initial size and assay distribution, extraction should be predictable for a given penetration. Two laboratory bacterial leaching tests under simulated stope leaching conditions were carried out for a periods of 89 and 96 weeks. On completion, the residual ore was screened and analyzed. The information so obtained was employed to provide an elapsed time base for the penetration model, from which predictions of future extraction were made. The finding of solubilized uranium trapped within apparently sol id ore pieces was unexpected. However, it is not recoverable except after crushing, and hence does not affect calculations of underground leaching .

THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B.
