In this paper, we report on the detection of spectral molecular emission of iron oxide (FeO) and copper oxide (CuxO) emitted by reactions occurring in a laboratory scale flash smelting process of pyrite (FeS2) as well as copper concentrate. The novelty of the technique is that, the molecular spectral emission sensing is achieved by using a low spectral resolution and low sensitive radiometer, enhanced with signal processing and matrix factorization techniques. The method was validated using a highly sensitive spectrometer, with a high spectral resolution; achieving a similar FeO spectral pattern as the one obtained after signal processing techniques over low resolution spectral signals. INTRODUCTION Visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy is an optical contactless sensing technique commonly used to capture information about the emitted, absorbed, transmitted or scattered radiation in a physical or chemical process, with the presence or absence of an excitation light source such as a laser or a broad spectral band source. These techniques coupled with signal processing and machine learning algorithms, sometimes referred as chemometrics (Pisapia et al., 2018), can be found in processes such as: pharmaceutical (Kandpal et al., 2016); food (Coelho et al., 2016); combustion (Ballester & García-Armingol, 2010); siderurgy (Strakowski et al., 2014) industry, among others. In the extractive copper industry there are several technological developments using optical sensing techniques aimed to retrieve information about copper ore and concentrate mineralogical composition such as X-Ray Fluorescence, Qemscan® (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy) and X Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, however, because of the manual procedures to analyze the samples with these laboratory instrumentation, only discrete information during a daily based operation can be retrieved, making impossible for the operators to take decisions over the involved processes in real time. The aim of our research work presented here is to contribute with sensing and data analysis procedures based on VIS-NIR spectroscopy for the flash smelting process characterization, particularly in this paper, with the detection of FeO and CuxO molecular emissions in a laboratory scale setup.

The formation of nitrogen oxides, the decay of carbon monoxide, and the concentrations of residual hydrocarbons in the secondary combustion zones of propane-air and methane-air flames were studied in three enclosed burners designed to simulate gas appliances such as space and water heaters. The effect of thermally or chemically perturbing the combustion gases above these flames was determined theoretically and by means of factorial experiments. The concentrations of air pollutants and the flame temperatures were measured, and the effects of ingress of secondary air into the primary and secondary combustion zones, flame stability, burner port surface, and simulated recycling of combustion gases were noted. Based on this study, four principles were derived that, applied to gas appliance design, will insure minimal emissions of these air pollutants: 1. Oxides of nitrogen can best be kept low by depressing peak temperatures to about 3,050° F. 2. If this is not possible, then the secondary combustion zone should be cooled rapidly to this temperature. 3. Carbon monoxide concentrations can be limited by rapid induction of secondary air. 4. Hydrocarbon concentrations can be controlled by designing for well-seated, stable flames. In addition, empirical reaction rates were derived that predict the concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the primary and secondary combustion zones.

Detailed mineralogical and metallurgical investigations were carried out on a phosphorous-bearing manganese carbonate ore from the Huayuan manganese mine, Hunan, China. Microprobe analyses indicate that the Manganese occurs mainly in calc-rhodochrosite and in rhodochrosite. The cOll'pOsitional range of these manganese carbonate minerals is 50 -80 % MnOJ3, 0 -35 % CaOJ3, 5-35 % MgC03 and 0 -15 F~. The manganese carbonate minerals are very fine grained, IOOSt are between 4.6 and 9.4 1m in diameter. The small grains are clustered into aggregates that form bands 0.5 to 10 rnn wide. The phosphorous-bearing mineral in the ore is fluorapatite and is in grains that are generally smaller than 6 1m in diameter. Metallurgical tests show that it is possible to concentrate the aggregates of manganese carbonate minerals by high intensity magnetic separation, and to reduce the phosphorous content by rpasting the concentrate to convert the manganese carl::x>nates to insoluble hausmannite, and then leaching the roast product with HCI to dissolve the fluorapatite.

A testing program was conducted to determine the suitability and reliability of adhesives and polycarbonate lenses for extended use in luminaires in mine environments. Polycarbonates were exposed, for periods up to 36 months, to four environments including ultraviolet light, humidity, intermittent water spray, and heat of either 180°F or 407 in various combinations. Rod impact tests on the exposed lens material indicated, that polycarbonate functions well under all 180°F environments and could be used with confidence for periods exceeding the test period, for as long as ten years, with a suit) able safety factor employed in design. The specimens exposed at 240°F showed decreased toughness after 24 months' exposure. Extrapolation of these data was deemed to be risky. A 462-day compatibility test between polycarbonate and six hydraulic fluids was run on stressed PC beams. One fluid caused beam breakage in less than one day, while three caused breakage at intermediate times. Two fluids exhibited essentially no effect on the PC when compared to a control. Epoxy and silicone adhesives were tested as lens adhesives and sealants. Three epoxy combinations tested showed low and erratic failure stresses. A room-temperature-cure silicone adhesive functioned extremely well for time periods up to 36 months and temperatures u2 to 240°F.

The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct iron making pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicate that 69% are less than 2.5 µm across, 21 % are 2.5-5 µm, and 10% are larger than 5 µm. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Several attempts have been made in the past sixty or so years to commerciliaze the vast oil shale deposits of the United States of America. However, the industry has yet to become viable and economic. To date, it has not been possible to produce oil from the oil shales at a competitive price when compared to the oil produced from oilfields by conventional methods. However, the development work has been quite fruitful in furthering the art of thick bed mining and technology of in situ retorting. The in situ method has the potential of recovering oil from thick beds and the resource recovery potential is much greater than that from underground mining and surface retorting. In situ methods require that the shales/ marlstones be fragmented ' in place to induce adequate porosity and permeability to allow in situ' heating of the fragmented shales. This can be accomplished by using explosives. However, it has been found that the existing blasting systems, though very efficient, are somewhat lacking. The explosive become insensitive when shot in multiple vertical decks. They can also become insensitive when spaced horizontally at close proximity to other charges. Also, since the blasting is done in a very limited free face, this limits the delay time that can be allowed between charges. Consequently it is not always possible to predict the performance of the blasting system on a routine basis. Furthermore, since it is not possible to undertake secodary blasting, it is imperative that the blast design function properly. Recent, successful retorting by Occidental Petroleum Company of retorts seven and eight suggests that some of these problems may have been overcome. This paper addresses some aspects of in situ retorting and problems those have impeded the development of a viable oil shale industry in the U.S.A.

At the end of August, U.S. producer posting of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum had been established at 48¢ per pound. At that time, dealer-quoted unalloyed ingot was reportedly at 44¢-47¢. CADMIUM: By late August, most U.S. producers had raised cadmium selling prices by 25¢ to $3 per pound. As a consequence, dealer quoting of cadmium ranged from $2.95 to $3.05 per pound. COAL: The wildcat strike, which began in southern West Virginia on July 19 and eventually spread to nine other States before ending on August 13, at its peak, idled approximately 115,000 miners and accounted for daily coal losses of an estimated 1.5 million tons at the height of the work stoppage. Concerned about the effects of the production cutbacks, the Bureau of Mines, early in the strike period, initiated its coal strike monitoring system which it had developed during the prolonged coal strike in the fall of 1974.

This progress report summarizes operating results on the gasification of natural lignite from five runs of the commercial-scale pilot plant at Grand Forks, N. Dak., during December 1946 and calendar years 1947 and 1948, when the plant was operated for 1,996 hours. A primary specific objective was to determine the useful life of the outer metal retort tube as it is influenced by corrosion and other factors under a wide range of operating conditions. A secondary objective was to develop the technology of production when generating gas with a high ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide in both the divided and continuous annuli. Results are summarized in graphs and tables that show hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios from 2.3 to 9 at gas-production rates from 6 to 12 M cu. St. per hr. (thousand cubic feet per hour), or approximately 30 to 60 cu, ft. per square foot of heated retort-wall surface per hour. Gas yields ranged from 36 to 54 M cu, ft. per ton of natural lignite or 63 to 91 M cu. ft. per ton of moisture- and ash-free lignite, Production rates were higher in the divided annulus, but these represent the maximum capacity of the plant only at high hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios when the high concentration of excess steam and low furnace temperature limit gas production. A ratio of 6 was the highest produced in the continuous annulus because mechanical Limitations of the auxiliary equipment prevented attainment of higher ratios. The lignite feed rate appears to influence the production rate more than any other individual operating variable. Heat balances for four periods when gas with ratios from 2.3 to 7.2 was produced with a lignite feed rate of about 325 pounds per hour suggest that the potential heat in the gas is lower at higher ratios, owing to increased heat losses in the excess steam. Heat-transfer rates through the retort tube in these four tests were between 1,500 and 3,000 B.t.u. per square foot per hour. These rates are much lower than those reached in many earlier tests, but no attempt was made to achieve maximum rates of heat transfer.

BCHMX (cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-[4,5-d]imidazole or Bicyclo-HMX) was studied as an energetic component of three different plastic explosives based on three matrices: C4 matrix, semtex10 matrix and silicone matrix. The original plastic explosives, Composition C4 - based on RDX (1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane), Semtex 10 explosive based on PETN (pentaerythritoltetranitrate) and plastic RDX-silicone, were included for comparison. Sensitivity and performance parameters were studied.

Elemental titanium has become famous as a space age metal, because of its high strength/ weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. However, the major use is in the form of titanium dioxide pigment, which because of its whiteness, high refractive index, and resulting light-scattering ability, is unequaled for whitening paints, paper, rubber, plastics, and other materials. A relatively minor use is in welding rod coatings, in the form of the mineral, rutile. United States consumption of titanium dioxide for these applications in 1973 was as follows: pigments, 891,000 st; titanium metal, 40,000 st (=24,000 st metal) ; and welding rod coatings, 10,000 st. The only commercially important titanium ore minerals at the present time are ilmenite, and its alteration products, and rutile. Titanium was discovered by Gregor in 1790, as a white oxide which he recovered from menaccanite, a variety of ilmenite occurring as a black sand near Falmouth, Cornwall. Barksdale (1966) states that the fundamental chemical reactions on which the present day titanium industry is based were known before 1800, although it was not until 1918 that these pigments were available commercially on the American market. Pings (1972) outlines the early history of the titanium industry in the United States, referring to the work of Guise (1964) and others: "Mining of titanium minerals in the United States began sometime between 1880 and 1900, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Small quantities of rutile were also produced during the time in North Carolina and Georgia. In 1901 rutile was mined from a deposit near Roseland, Va., and was used in making titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Ilmenite in the deposit was produced as a separate item in 1913, and rutile and ilmenite were obtained from this deposit through 1921. The mining of titanium bearing beach sands began in 1916 near Mineral City and Pablo Beach, Fla., for the purpose of making titanium tetrachloride to be used in tracer bullets, flares, and smokescreens. The titanium pigment industry was founded in 1918. By 1928 a large part of the domestic production of rutile, ilmenite, and zircon came from Florida. However production ceased in 1929 in Florida with the mining of newly discovered deposits in Virginia which were mined until 1968. The discovery of new deposits in Florida, and the development of better mining and concentrating methods for lowgrade sands, led to a return of activities in this area. The large deposits near Tahawus, N.Y., were brought into production in 1942 by National Lead Co. (now N L Industries Inc.), and by 1949 this company was the lead¬ing producer of ilmenite in the world. In 1948 the extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec." The beginning of the modern titanium metal industry was in 1948, when E. "Significant uncertainty is associated with predicting future trends in deep-sea mining projects, especially when attempting to assess markets for associated products such as ships and collectors. In order to help European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to appraise the future market share of deep-sea mining equipment, a methodology was developed that allows to assess and predict equipment turnover. This study presents a market analysis, which evaluates the scale of the potential market for deep-sea mining equipment for seafloor manganese nodules (SMnN) and seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) based on six key drivers: (i) the worldwide deposit potential of SMnN and SMS deposits, (ii) the profitability of deep-sea mining projects, (iii) the metal market of seven associated metals (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag, Co, Ni, Mn), (iv) the current legal and environmental situation in the Area, (v) investment and maintenance costs, and (vi) a competitor analysis.Figures for the different key drivers are based on public reports and expert interviews. Large uncertainties as well as contrasting views and expectations resulted in different options (scenarios) for the future development of the deep-sea mining market. Several scenarios were developed and based on the future number of “mining projects” in the short-term (2022-2041) and the long-term (2042-2061). The number of such mining projects has been calculated based on the combined analysis of the different key drivers.In the scope of this study, the definition of a “mining project” is a deep-sea mining operation for SMnN or SMS lasting for 20 years. This operation includes the purchase of a set of deep-sea mining equipment consisting of a mining support vessel, a vertical transport system and the seafloor mining equipment, in line with other work within the EU FP7 project “Blue Mining” (GA No. 604500)."

The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining’s East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and RailSystems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km(3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

"INTRODUCTION The Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cooperating with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers, has made a series of investigations of the washability of coal from commercially important bens of Alabama. The results of 13 investigations pertaining to the Mary Lee, Clark, Black Creek, Jefferson, Pratt, Corona, Carter Brookwood, Blue Creek, Thompson, and Woodstock beds have been published. 4/ This report, the fourteenth of the series, deals with run-of-mine coal from the Henry Ellen bed at the Acmar No. 5 mine of the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co.The Acmar mine is 1/2 mile west of Acmar, Saint Clair County, in the northern part of the Cahaba field. Present production at the mine is about 800 tons per day, all of which, accept the lump coal, is treated in jigs. The washability data were obtained by means of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests. There are included, also, tests showing the extent of liberation of impurities by recrushing the coarser sizes of coal from the top bench and tests showing the flakiness in selected sizes.SAMPLING AT THE MINEThe Henry Ellen bed at Acmar consists of two benches separated by a shale parting. At the point of sampling the top bench was 6 feet 3 inches thick and contained a 1-inch and a 1 1/2-inch band of bone. The bottom bench was 5 feet thick and was separated from the top bench by 20 inches of shale. In taking the samples for the washability study the working face was squared up, and a representative 2-ton section was out from each bench. The shale parting was discarded, according to usual mining practice."

This paper is one of a series prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines discussing the methods used in crushing and grinding materials for cement manufacture, and deal particularly with the methods used at the Howes Cave plant of the North American Cement Corporation. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

The Bureau of Mines recorded particle accelerations in the mine roof produced by three types of explosives in the Pilot Knob Pellet Co. mine, Pilot Knob, Mo. Examined were the effectiveness of cube root, square root, and two-thirds power scaling in grouping the underground blast vibration data, and the effects of mine geometry, rock type, explosive type, and charge size on blast vibration levels. A propagation law for this mine was determined. The scaling factor of the square root of the charge weight was developed from previous Bureau studies of vibrations from quarry blasts, and in under-ground blasting both square root and cube root scaling were found applicable for scaling particle vibration data. The vibrations from the Pilot Knob blasts were best grouped by a square-root scaling factor. The empirical propagation equation AW1/2 = 76,250 (R/W1/2)-2.61 where A is the peak acceleration in g's, W is the charge weight in pounds, and R is the distance from the blast in feet, may be used to describe vibration amplitudes from charges fired with zero delay caps or with a single cap at Pilot Knob. Statistically significant differences were found in the vibration levels generated by the different explosives. The Power Primer (75-percent weight-strength ammonia gelatin dynamite) produced levels of vibration of 1.7 to 2.4 times those of AN-FO and slurry explosives; the latter two are approximately equal.
