"Introduction Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with no many ""inflection points"" and ""counterflexures"" that they obscure the issue.Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely, the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration.Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.Grindability Characteristics When the ores are being studied the information sought is grindability characteristics (grain-size distribution) and the grindability (work required to produce new surface) of a group of ores.When the study is of the machines, several machines are used for a given ore or given types of ores, and the grinding performances of the machines are compared by a grain-size study.Table 1 gives the grindability characteristics and grindability of six substances, one of which is coal. The substances are arranged from left to right in progressing order of tons per horsepower-hour. Curves and graphs are not needed for elucidation. The secret of the ease of interpretation is the order mentioned and the similarity of the sizing analyses. Power records must be complete in grinding studies.The grinding device was a ball, plunger, and mortar called the drop weight.' It may be used to advantage when the amount of material to be tested is too small for the orthodox machines.The upper part of table 1 shows the grindability characteristics by the cumulative-sizing analyses. Note how closely the percentage weights agree for a given sieve size. The lower part shows the grindability in terms defined elsewhere. The present paper should be read in conjunction with that paper."

Emulsion explosives consist of an aqueous oxidizer phase, a fuel phase, and an emulsifier. The ability to use lower-cost sources for any of these raw materials presents an obvious economic advantage to emulsion manufacturers. This paper focuses on using low cost waste drain oils as the fuel phase in emulsion explosive applications. Laboratory studies showed that emulsions made from waste drain oils and agricultural ammonium nitrate prills were usable for emulsion explosives though their shear stability was weak. Customer field results proved that waste crankcase drain oil could replace half of the virgin diesel fuel in emulsion explosives to make an effective emulsion explosive product with a very low cost.

In November 1980 a combined airborne electro-magnetic (INPUT.) and magnetometer survey was conducted by Questor Surveys Limited in the State Line Area, Colorado-Wyoming. The survey was the result of discussions over a prolonged period between the authors and various investigators of the State kimberlite occurrences. As a result of these discussions and literature studies, it was decided that airborne geophysical methods would be potentially useful in the exploration for new kimberlite occurrences. The survey was designed by Paterson, Grant and Watson Limited and conducted by Questor Surveys Limited over an area in which more than 15 kimberlite bodies were known and on some of which ground geophysical surveys had been conducted. The survey was designed primarily to determine the airborne electromagnetic and magnetic responses of the known occurrences and to deter- mine whether these responses would be detectable under similar conditions in other parts of the State Line District and elsewhere.

An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing compact transmit antennas and/or other means to efficiently couple VLF to MF band radio energy between portable wireless communication units in coal mines. The completely wireless communication ranges between two portable radios equipped with practically-sized reference loop antennas in representative coal mine environments are estimated. Antenna technology is assessed with respect to transmit moment, range, intrinsic safety, battery and wearability requirements to deter- mine the most suitable antenna types for use by miners. It is concluded that air-core bandolier loop antennas, and perhaps ferrite-loaded loop antennas, having peak transmit moments of about 2.5 ampere-m5 will be the most effective antenna choices for portable units. This choice, however, will not allow the range goal of 1350 feet to be attained in mines having unfavorable signal attenuation and noise environments. Rectangular air-core loops are compared with grounded horizontal-wire and vertical-wire mode exciters for fixed station applications. The potential for significantly increasing the wireless communication range by inductively coupling to communications and power lines in a mine is evaluated and found to be considerable based on theoretical coupling equations. Lastly, the theoretical performance of a hybrid noise cancelling diversity receiving technique that utilizes both the electric and magnetic field components of the ambient noise to improve the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio under certain adverse conditions is estimated and shown to be favorable when the magnetic and electric field noise components are highly correlated.

To meet escalating energy requirements, substantial increases in production from the strippable coal and lignite deposits in eastern Montana, western North Dakota, and northeastern Wyoming already have occurred, and further expansions are expected at least until the year 2000. Such production, attributable largely to rising demand for low-sulfur coal, must be accomplished with a minimum of adverse effects on the environment. Information on geology, climate, and current land use in the Upper Missouri River basin is presented in the Bureau of Mines review as a guideline to what operators may expect during and after mining. Proven methods of protecting the air and water from pollution and of restoring mined land for other uses are described, and untried methods of land reclamation, some with equipment yet to be manufactured, are discussed as possible means of maintaining aesthetic values in the basin. Costs incurred to protect the environment are part of the production cost and thus are borne by the ultimate consumer. Unit production costs are less for the thick coal and lignite deposits of the basin than for the thinner but higher Btu coal deposits of the Eastern and Midwestern United States. Precise comparisons of environmental protection costs between mines in such disparate areas cannot be made, because of differences in physical conditions, accounting procedures, and other variables.

The increasing availability of tools on the web provides a great opportunity for the research community to boost investigation by accessing computational resources from all over the world. For example, data analytics libraries implemented in languages like Python can be accessed through many open and commercial platforms, therefore providing researchers with a common set of tools or shared datasets. Unfortunately, that is not the case with research in resource assessment and mine planning, where the most standardised tools are commercial applications designed to work on the desktop, but there are not many standard platforms for research. As a result, researchers from different groups often need to start from scratch in order to develop their work, and rarely share implementations details. Similarly, apart from a few publicly available examples, there is a lack of common datasets that are validated and can be used to compare results between different approaches. In this paper, we introduce a platform that provides tools for resource assessment and mine planning, which can be accessed remotely utilising Jupyter Notebooks. In its current version, the platform provides (i) definition and implementation of basic structures for managing samples and models (loading, saving, adding or removing columns, etc.), (ii) definition of experimental and modelled variograms for spatial continuity analysis, (iii) definition of standard interpolation methods in resource evaluation (inverse distance and kriging), (iv) definition of standard problems in mine planning (ultimate pit and precedence constrained production scheduling), (v) generation of 2D standard graphs like grade distribution, conditional means, tonnage-grade, and production plans (vi) a set of datasets, which can be used for case studies, and (vii) a set of notebooks with examples and documentation. In this paper, we introduce the platform and show some examples that illustrate some of the possibilities that it has for research and education in the area of resource assessment and mine planning.

"This paper describes the successful pilot plant testing of a flowsheet, developed at INCO Ltd.'s J.Roy Gordon Research Laboratory (JRGRL), for improved separation of the constituent minerals in a bulk copper nickel concentrate.The flowsheet utilized the fact that xanthate concentration on the mineral surfaces is the most important variable affecting the high lime separation and that reduction of the xanthate concentration could be effected by an oxidative conditioning stage.When the adsorbed xanthate was reduced to a suitably low level, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite could be floated to leave a high grade nickel concentrate as the residue. Sodium cyanide was added to the froth product to depress pyrrhotite and any remaining pentlandite. The temporary depression of chalcopyrite by the sodium cyanide was overcome by introducing a conditioning step following cyanide addition. The advantages of the flowsheet; improved copper-nickel separation, operation without heating of the pulp, production of both high grade nickel concentrate ( 29. 5% Ni, . 26% Cu) and copper concentrate ( <O. 5% Ni, 30% Cu) were all realized."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) established on August 15, 1983, a Generic Mineral f Technology Center (GTC) for Respirable Dust within the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WW) in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through researching and advancing the fundamental under- standing of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. Other Center activities include the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and the technology transfer to the industry. The Center also serves as the reference center for publications in the respirable dust area.

"INTRODUCTION The BeVan quartz crystal prospect in the Indian Creek mining district of Lemhi County, west-central Idaho, was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ on July 9, 1943. As quartz crystals possessing peizoelectric properties were on the critical list of strategic war minerals, further exploration of the deposit was recommended. The Bureau of Mines exploration began in December 1943 and continued through January 1944. Additional trenching was completed during May and June 1944. This report presents the data obtained by this exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Mining Division, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, does the actual exploratoiy work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Division, O. C. THE substance of this paper was prepared for the Seventh International Congress of Applied Chemistry, held in London, May, 1909, under the title, Some Developments in Blast-Roasting. In the absence of the author, a -short abstract of the paper was read, and the abstract only will appear in the proceedings of the congress. The present paper has been partly rewritten and considerably enlarged by information gained since the original was prepared ; also some illustrations have been added. Blast-roasting&apos; is a generic term for the process of forcing air through finely-divided. metallic sulphide with the object of roasting and agglomerating in a single operation. At first the process was confined to a galena-concentrate ; lime, limestone, or gypsum was added, to serve both as a diluent to keep separate the particles of galena that they might be thoroughly oxidized, and as a flux that the partly-roasted ore might be agglomerated by the formation of some slag. Later it was extended to treat other metallic sulphides. The leading processes were the Huntington-Heberlein and the Savelsberg of Europe, and the Carmichael-Bradford of Australia. In the United States and Canada, the Huntington-Heberlein process has found application in some instances with galena-concentrates, for which it was originally intended; but this class of ore is not often treated alone, hence the process has had to be modified to suit conditions. The Savelsberg process has been transplanted to this country in about its original form. The Carmichael-Bradford is not used at present. The changes called for in the Huntington-Heberlein process to adapt it to the class of lead-bearing ores usually smelted have been the 1 A. S. New information on possible resource value of sea floor manganese nodule deposits in the eastern North Pacific has been obtained by study of records and collections of the 1972 Sea Scope Expedition. Nodule abundance (percent of sea floor covered) varies greatly, to judge from bottom photographs from 8 stations and data from other sources. All estimates considered reliable are plotted on a map of the region. Similar maps show the average content of Ni, Cu, Mn, and Co at 89 stations from which 3 or more nodules were analyzed. Variations in nodule metal content at each station are shown graphically in an appendix, where data on nodule sizes are also given. Results of new analyses of 420 nodules from 93 stations, for Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Co, and Zn, are listed in another appendix. Relatively high Ni+Cu content is restricted chiefly to four groups of stations in the equatorial region, where group averages are 1.86, 1.99, 2.47, and 2255 weight percent. These and a few other areas may warrant more exploration. It is hoped that this report will stimulate new interest in North Pacific nodule deposits and that the maps and quantitative data will aid future exploration.

Acid mine drainage, discharging from coal beds, has polluted our streams and rivers since early time. These pollutants affect water quality by lowering the pH, reducing natural alkalinity, increasing total hardness, and adding undesirable amounts of iron, manganese, aluminum and sulfates, The tangible damages are the costs involved in replacing equipment corroded by the acid water, additional treatment costs at municipal and industrial water treatment plants, and damages resulting from corrosion of steel culverts, bridge piers, locks, boat hulls, steel barges, pumps, and condensers. Intangible damages, which are real and important, include destruction of biological life of the stream, reduced property values, and streams rendered undesirable for recreational uses.1 The major problems of mine drainage occur in the anthracite and bituminous coal regions in Appalachia. However, many of the western mining states have significant mine drainage problems in specific areas, but the overall problem is not as great as in the eastern states.

This paper shall show an economic feasible approach to implement Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction measures into the mining and metallurgy industry. The goal to improve energy consumption is directly linked to the reduction of GHG emissions and therefore directly in correlation with the economic viability. A baseline scenario of the considered reference system and of the respective reference year has to be defined, mapped and analysed. In a second step an analysis of the same operation using available and prospected Best Available Technology (BAT) processes is carried out to generate a basis for a benchmark system. The identified reduction potentials are reported and the GHG emission reductions are put into relation to the investment cost of the new process technologies / process adaption to be implemented. This economic feasibility calculation is necessary to realise a cost efficient GHG reduction roadmap implementation into the company&apos;s business operations. The GHG reduction roadmap is developed using ratios between GHG reduction and investment / operating cost to get an indication for a sequence for implementing carbon emission reductions measures.

"The froth flotation process was patented by E.L. Sulman, H.F.K. Pickard, and John Ballot in 1906 . . . . . . . . . .James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U.S., about August 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Montana . . . . . . . . . .By 1914, 42 mining companies were operating or experimenting with the flotation process . . . . . . . . . .The period 1930 to 1960 saw the application of flotation spread to nonsulphide ores and become the key factor in the economic production of many industrial minerals". So states FROTH FLOTATION, 50th Anniversary Volume, published by AIME in 1962. It is interesting, to observe that the Mines Branch, now part of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, was established in 1907 through an act of Parliament entitled, "The Nines and Geology Act". In 1911, a mineral dressing group was formed and a laboratory was constructed. By 1921, an engineer was devoting full time to industrial mineral processing problems.

Longhole open stoping was introduced in the zinc-rich &apos;B&apos; lode at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) during 1968. Since then one longitud- inal and a series of transverse longhole open stopes have been developed. The longholes are drilled using Gardner Denver airtrac drilling jumbos and the broken ore is loaded from drawpoints and transported to chutes using Wagner ST5 scoop- trams. The holes were drilled from sill stopes 160 ft apart. The width of an emptied transverse longhole stope was successfully widened by blasting rings of blastholes drilled parallel to the stope wall. Proposed stope and pillar designs for a series of transverse longhole open stopes were assessed using a method of finite element analysis, applied to a longitudinal section through the area. Blastholes have been surveyed for dip and bearing using an Eastman borehole survey camera. The data produced has provided the basis of a study of blast- hole deviation. Deviation of boreholes is considered to be the major cause of the formation of benches in longhole stopes.

High-purity alumina finds application in various electronic industry sectors, with approximately 100 million tons of this compound being produced worldwide. Alumina is acquired through the mining process of bauxite, a rock composed of a mixture of minerals such as gibbsite, kaolinite, hematite, and either anatase or rutile. In 2020, both bauxite and alumina were included in the list of critical raw materials. Due to the demand for high-purity alumina production, the development of a methodology to remove impurities present in the leach liquor from bauxite processing by solvent extraction (SX) followed by precipitation has been widely studied. This work aims to obtain high-purity alumina from bauxite by a solvent extraction process followed by a precipitation step from the sulfur leach liquor obtained by the thorough dissolution of Al and Fe from bauxite. Different parameters were evaluated in the SX step, such as extractant type, pH, temperature, and volume-to-volume ratio. The results indicated that using Alamine 336 as an extractant at pH 0 and room temperature led to an extraction of 90% of Fe and 15% of Al. Aluminum sulfate was completely precipitated as aluminum hydroxide and 55% of Fe using NH4OH. After the calcination procedure, obtaining a 99.9% pure alumina was possible without generating a red mud-similar residue.

A review of concepts and theories for predicting thermodynamic solution properties of multi- component high temperature liquid solutions is reviewed. During the last 50 years the ability to predict :such properties for molten salts, silicates and metals based on the generally known properties of the lower order (often binary) systems has been developed and shown to provide predictions which are quite useful in science and technology. There are many gaps in our understanding of these high temperature solutions, especially for metals, and considerably more work is needed.

The objective was to develop and design a remotely operated temporary roof support system that provides a safe working environment between a freshly cut coal face and the last line of permanently supported roof in which to perform roof bolting activities. This system was to take the form of a retrofit package which could be adapted to a majority of the bolters currently in service. The result is an integrated piece of hardware which will retrofit onto virtually all single boom bolters by removing the drill boom and relocating and modifying the hydraulic controls. The system is composed of three basic components: a pair of cantilevered roof supports which reach forward to the desired line of support, a mast type drill unit for drilling holes and torquing bolts, and a transverse slide assembly to carry the drill from hole to hole across the entry without relocating either the bolter or the roof support. A converted bolter not only provides a much safer operation but is projected to increase the production speed as well as reduce the manpower required to operate a section.. This improvement in productivity is shown to make the job of retrofitting a bolter cost effective in less than two months and provide a potential profit thereafter. Based on the findings presented in this report it is recommended that a proto-type be built and tested in an underground coal mine to demonstrate its effectiveness.
