The sulfur in high-sulfur bauxite not only pollutes the environment but also harms alumina production. This study investigated the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite by adding Zn or ZnO during the Bayer process. The results showed that the different valence sulfur (S2−, S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) in sodium aluminate solution can be effectively removed by adding Zn during the digestion process. Adding ZnO removes the S2− in liquor, but the other sulfur compounds (S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) are not affected. The mechanism of sulfur removal has been elucidated, where the S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2− are first reduced to S2−, and after adding Zn, the S2− enters into red mud in the form of ZnS. The ZnO then reacts with S2− to generate the ZnS that enters into red mud. Thus, this is a new and effective method of sulfur removal by adding Zn during the digestion process. The results shed light on the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite during alumina production.

So far as is known , there is no complete bibliography on sampling, therefore , this one should be of value . In it are nearly eleven hundred references , some dating back 30 years , on sampling at mines , mills , smelters , power plants , pumping stations and refineries . For convenience , there are included a few references to methods for sampling such materials as leather belting in mills , salt impregnated soils , and mine waters . All the important technical journals , - including some in foreign countries- and engineering society publications , also mining and metallurgical text - books , have been studied for anything concerning sampling , and while it is not claimed that every important reference has been listed , the bibliography is fairly complete . The arrangement is alphabetical by authors ' names , and the references are numbered serially in the crder that they appear in the bibliography . Anonyous references are listed under the name of the journal in which they appear , and are numbered like the references bearing an author's name . Patents are grouped in their numerical order , without index nu.bers . Under the heading , " U.S. Bureau of Mines Publications " , are listed all publications of the bureau that deal with sampling . While the serial number is omitted , these same references , of course , have serial numbers where they appear in the list arranged alphabetically by authors .

It's my pleasure to welcome the Rocky Mountain Coal Institute to Montana. Now that you've ended a 74 year history of meeting outside our borders, I hope you'll be back more often. Even if I can't convince you to come back before 2060, when another 74 years will be up, I'm confident the Kalispell and Flathead Lake area will do the persuading for me. In recent weeks, I've made a number of speeches around the state pointing out just how wrong the revenue projections in Montana's state government made in April of '85 were when we came to April of '86. Since the middle of this month, Montana's legislators have been in Helena struggling to balance a state budget that, by the end of fiscal year '87, threatened to be some $88 million in the red. Other western states reliant on natural resource and agricultural economies have found themselves caught in the same deflationary spiral. The "window of opportunity" I proposed and the 1985 Montana Legislature passed, couldn't have been opened at a more difficult time. What was envisioned as an incentive to expand Montana's coal production, and our tax base, ran aground on low oil prices and excess hydroelectric power. De- spite the one-third severance tax rebate offered on new coal production, year-to-date figures published in the June 2nd Coal Week show that production in Montana is down almost 10 per- cent from last year. Again, we're not alone. Production in Wyoming is down 8 percent and in North Dakota, it has dropped 13 percent. An over- all 3 percent production decline in western states looks even worse when contrasted against a 12 percent increase for your eastern competitors. Montana's "window of opportunity" had the potential to be a significant signal to your industry. That potential was quickly tempered by the inability of Arab nations to stabilize world energy prices. If any of us had forgotten, the last twelve months have reminded western states that the well-being of our natural resource economies has a tremendous impact on the ability of all levels of government to provide services. The past year has also driven home that in the world of business and in the business of the world, risk-taking is still the name of the game. The Western Governors recognize the problems facing this industry - and our states - and we're prepared to fight for the future of western coal. In the past two decades, legitimate environmental concerns have created a vast body of new legislation affecting coal producers. The industry has been required to meet new reclamation standards - tough regulations relating to ground water, air quality and wildlife habitat. To the industry's credit, coal companies have hired professionals with the technical know-how to do it right. Rather than considering reclamation laws to be an unreasonable burden, today's coal company is more likely to view its reclamation efforts as a source of corporate pride. In a sense, the industry and the agencies which regulate it have matured together . . . although at times OSM is reluctant to admit that either of us capable of or willing to play by the rules. Certainly some abuses exist and OSM's oversight has been helpful in ensuring parity between those states willing to comply and those that would rather defy federal law. Nonetheless, penalizing the more modem and responsible western coal industry for abuses that occur elsewhere is both unfair and counterproductive. Federal penalties range from "cruel and unusual" reporting requirements to the proposed electricity tax that would effectively force utilities and ratepayers who have already met the sulphur emission standards to subsidize those who have dodged their cleanup responsibilities. Due to the modernisation of mines, traditional training methods may be supplemented to support the upskilling of supervisors in mines. A project was initiated by the SAMERDI SATCAP programme to demonstrate the “art of possibility” through a modern training methodology. Two exemplar digital supervisory leadership development modules for underground gold and platinum-group metal conventional and modernising mines, were developed for potential uptake by the mining industry. These exemplar modules were exhibited on a digital platform, towards leading and driving mining modernisation. The research adopted a mixed method approach that included a literature review, a review of an existing supervisory leadership development programme, data gathering, a pilot study, and stakeholder validation workshops. The research supported the development of exemplar digitised modules. The two digitised modules were showcased to the industry for potential adoption. Training slides, a facilitator guide, and a training video were developed for ease of use by industry. The training modules are generic and not specific to a particular mine. They may be used by multi-commodity mines, including gold and platinum-group metals, as ‘stand-alone’ modules. They are customisable, through consultation with relevant service providers for specific working environments. The findings indicated that both the traditional classroom training and the new digitised online learning solution offer advantages for supervisory leadership development. Digital learning is not a new concept for supervisors at mines and modern training methods are well-supported by supervisors in the industry. A ‘modernised’ training solution may consider a ‘blended’ learning approach that combines traditional training with digital methods.

The Bureau of Mines has studied the problem of cracking in residential structure walls from vibrations produced by blasting in surface mines. Direct observations were made of blasting damage consisting primarily of cosmetic cracking in plaster and gypsum board walls. Measurements of structure response and also application of the response spectra analysis single-degree-of-freedom model were used to quantify the frequency dependence of the safe level criteria. An overall summary analysis was performed using the new Bureau of Mines damage observations and data obtained from nine previous studies, including the three analyzed earlier by the BuMines for Bulletin 656, published in 1971. Separate analysis of the high- and low-frequency damage cases, structural response, and two types of construction resulted in the establishment of safe vibration levels ranging from 12 mm/sec to 50 mm/sec (0.5 in/sec to 2.0 in/sec).

Seventy-three of the 90 naturally occurring elements that are found in the earth's crust are metals or metalloids. The quantities of metals used annually in the United States range from about 100 million metric tons (steel) to a few kilograms (osmium). The recovery of metals from discarded products or industrial process wastes, especially those metals that are used in large quantity, are very expensive, or are unusually toxic, is important to the national economy and to the natural environment. From its inception in 1910, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been the Government's prime source of information on metals recycling, as well as a major innovator in recycling technology. Statistical data on scrap generation and processing have been summarized annually for many years in the USBM's Minerals Yearbook. Most of the data for individual metals discussed in this report were extracted from that publication.

The subject of capital and the Canadian mining industry is so broad as to be impossible of comprehensive treatment in brief form. The purpose of the present paper therefore will be only to outline in a meagre and somewhat sketchy way the nature and extent of the mineral industry in Canada and to point out those features which are likely to be of general public interest. Canada's mineral industry has a long and creditable production record. The? value of the output per capita rose from $2.23 in 1886 to a maximum of $26.40 in 1920 and the value of the products from ten million dollars in the former year to almost two hundred and twenty-eight million dollars in 1920. Compared with other primary industries and on the basis of the value of production, mining held third place in Canada in 1920, the premier position going to agriculture and the value of forestry production placing that industry second in the list. In the mineral industry, between six and seven thousand properties are operated annually giving employment to up- wards of sixty thousand employees to whom about seventy-five million dollars is paid in salaries and wages. During 1923, seventeen mineral products reached a production value of one million dollars or over in Canada and in order of the values assigned these were: coal, gold, nickel, cement, cop-per, silver, clay products, lead, asbestos, natural gas, stone, zinc, lime, cobalt, sand and gravel, gypsum and salt.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

This work was done to provide thermodynamic, electrical, physical, and compositional data on the seeded combustion plasmas of seven coals for the design of MHD generators. The systems were assumed to be at equilibrium, and the design data were generated by solving for the composition of both gas and liquid phases with a digital computer. The coals reported in this study include a western subbituminous, a Pennsylvania anthracite, and five representative bituminous coals. The data include dewpoint temperatures of both slag and seed. A Mollier diagram for each coal is given to allow graphical generator calculations.

The Gulf Coast of southern Louisiana during the year of 1940 was subjected to an extensive exploration and development campaign, as a result of which 16 oil fields and about 38 new producing sands were found. Although this record of discovery appears in keeping with the rate of 1939 actually in amount of new proven reserves, it may fall short of that of the previous year. Only five or six of the discoveries rated as first-class or important fields at the close of the year. The most prominent new fields opened during the year were Neale field in Beaure-gard Parish, the West Cote Blanche field in St. Mary Parish, the Stella field and the West Bay field in Plaquemines Parish, and the Lake Salvador field in St. Charles Parish. There were many important oil-sand discoveries in proven fields, such as in the Bayou Perot field, the Golden Meadows field, the Iowa field, West Lake Verrett field, and the Venice field. During the year, 1047 weUs were drilled in southern Louisiana, of which 768 were completed as oil-producing wells, 17 as gas wells and 262 as dry holes. The Neale field in northwest Beauregard Parish is considered one of the most important discoveries of the year. The f~eld centers around the north half of sec. 26, 'Y.3 S., R.I I W., just north of the town of Neale. It was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Co., using reflection seismograph to locate the structure. Production was found in the second well drilled in the Wilcox sand on the downthrown side of a fault. The structure is known as the "Tepetate" type, being similar to that of the well-known Tepetate field. There were 12 oil wells and 3 dry holes drilled during the year. The Wilcox sand in this field occurs between 8350 and 8400 ft. and averages 30 ft. in thickness. The West Cote Blanche Bay field, in West Cote Blanche Bay, St. Mary Parish, is a 1940 discovery by the Texas Company, credited to reflection seismograph exploration. The oil is from two sands occurring at 3110 to 3140 ft. and from 4950 to 5020 it. Four wells were drilled during the year, three oil wells and one dry hole. The deepest hole drilled reached 9491 ft. without encountering salt or dome material. In Plaquemines Parish, south of New Orleans, the California company has a new field known as the Stella field. The sand was found at a depth of 7485 ft., and 5 ft. of perforations made a well capable of producing 486 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. through a 9.is-in. choke. The oil is 42" gravity. The discovery well was drilled to a total depth of 10,258 ft. and other producing sands were indicated. A good field appears assured, although only one well was completed within the year. The Lake Salvador field, in the center of Lake Salvador, St. Charles Parish, gives promise of being one of the most important discoveries of the year. The discovery well was perforated at 9775 to 9800 ft. making 850 bbl. of 33.7° gravity oil daily through a 1/4-in. choke. A typical case study of a coal washery of capacity 500 t/h raw coal input has been presented and discussed with particular reference to the techno-economics for flotation column vis-a-vis the conventional flotation cells, keeping parameters like input capacity and product ash same. The results presented indicate that substitution of flotation cells by columns in a coal washery results in advantages of increased fine coal recovery, better quality of concentrates, lower capital and production costs etc.,. The effect of increasing the specific capacity of the column by design modifications on the cost benefit is also analysed.

Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.

On the Continent, ferromanganese has been produced in the blast furnace almost continuously since 1876, but little definite information concerning the practice is to be found in technical literature, and almost nothing in the way of a theory of the manganese furnace. In this country, prior to 1904, but one company had attempted its production in a serious way, and none of the operating data or other information from this company has been, or is, available to the public..In the last 5 years, as a result of the restriction of imports, a number of furnaces have been blown in on this alloy, with the result that in 1918 as many as 18 furnaces were in blast. The majority of the men in charge of these furnaces had had little previous experience in such operations; so the Bureau of Mines, in the summer of 1918, undertook the collection of data from ferromanganese furnaces. Operating data were collected by the Bureau from eleven ferromangahese furnaces, which will be referred to throughout this paper as furnaces A, B, C, F, G, I, J, K, L, M, and P; the dimensions of seven of the furnaces are given in Table 1. AT present, no theories exist which allow prediction of the effect of alloying additions on the thermoelectric properties of metals. Nevertheless, Battelle and others1 have observed that, at high temperatures, the peak thermal electromotive-force output (relative to a platinum standard) occurs with metals in Group VI of the Periodic Chart. The authors suspected that this peak was associated with the fact that maximum electronic bond stability is achieved with these metals which have six bonding electrons per atom. On the basis of current electron-concentration theory for transition metals and alloys:' it was surmised that the addition of valency electrons to metals of Groups IV and V (accomplished by the addition of metals from Groups VI, VII, or VIII) should progressively increase the thermoelectric-power output of the resulting alloys until an alloy composition is reached at which the number of valency electrons per atom is six. A further increase in the ratio of valency electrons per atom should then decrease the thermoelectric power. In contrast, the addition of bonding electrons to Group VI, VII, or VIII metals should decrease their thermoelectric power since the electron per atom

Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.
