The Bureau cf Mines, U.S. Department of the Intericr, is investigating biolcgical and chemical deccntaminaticn of cyanide- containing leachates and residues. Biolcgical cyanide cxidaticn, using bacteria isolated from a precious metals tailings pond, destroyed >85 pct of the cyanide in several prccessing solutions containing up tc 280 ppm CN. Reaction time varied from about 4.5 hr in a trickling reactor using quartz as a bacterial substrate to 2 mo in unagitated, covered flasks. Chemical techniques were used to destroy the remaining complexed cyanide down to 1 ppm. Exploratory tests were also conducted using spent ore from heap leach operations as the bacterial substrate to determine if biological cyanide oxidation could be used to destroy the residual cyanide in spent heaps.

Tailings originating from the gravity concentration of a gold ore containing about 14 g/t Au have been treated by various beneficiation methods. These tailings have been screened on the 147 and 74 micron sieves and the two coarsest fractions have been separated on shaking tables with unsatisfactory results, but the concentrates have been examined in polished sections for mineragraphic analysis. Very simple flotation flowsheets have been applied to collect most of the gold, recovery and grade varying with the regrinding time in a ball mill. Cyanidation tests have shown that this type of treatment is also applicable to such tailings.

Ore reserve estimation is a multi- disciplinary process involving not only tonnage and grade estimation (resource estimation), but also consideration of technical and legal aspects such as mining the deposit, beneficiating the ores, and selling the product. This paper provides a background to under- standing resource estimation including geologic modelling, manual estimation methods, conventional computer methods. and geostatistical methods. Mine planning, metallurgical studies, legal/environmental, and marketing considerations are also discussed as they relate to estimating ore reserves.

Treatment of dilute acid mine drainage and similarly polluted water is becoming increasingly complicated. The pressure of economics is now exacerbated by legislation which classifies as hazardous waste the precipitates from conventional lime treatment plants. Since acid mine drainage invariably contains sulfate ions, one solution is to use anaerobic Desulfovibrio type bacteria to reduce the sulfate into sulphide ions which could then be used to precipitate out the heavy metals. Results are presented for both batch flask cultures and continuous column tests. Compost was used as the bacterial substrate in the column test which simulated heaps. Conditions changed from aerobic to the required anaerobic deep in the columns. Polluted feeds (up to 700 mg/l zinc) gave effluent containing well below I mg/l zinc over extended periods. Direct transfer of sulphide ions through a stream from an isolated container of bacteria is a good alternative.

The Lynne deposit is a volcanic-to volcaniclastic-hosted, Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag orebody located in the early Proterozoic magmatic terrain of northern Wisconsin. As of February 1991, core drilling has partially delineated a multi-million ton, near-surface, disseminated to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is hosted by a gently dipping sequence of fragmental rhyolites, felsic tuffs, less abundant dacite to andesite flows, and fine-grained volcanic sediments. The deposit is broadly conformable With the host rock stratigraphy, but the ore zones thicken and coalesce in the central part of the deposit.

In a state-of-the-an review of predictive methods for longwall support load calculation, special respect is paid to those techniques which enable actual roof conditions and local lithology of strata to be involved. Principal systems of roof examination include the borehole perforation test and seismic velocity measurements. Roof strata stability is related to caveability classifications and roof inclination due to subsidence. The critical analysis of both load resistance prediction methods and roof stability classifications shows that each has its own value of reliability level. The present research opportunities analysed underline the significance of developing fully reliable prediction techniques as needed by the coal industry.

After many years of research, ICI staff have developed a numerical modelling system for the study of detonator/primer/explosive configurations. Results from this work clearly identified that current primer designs were not as effective in delivering their energy potential as needed. Alternative designs were evaluated and several prototypes, all essentially spherical in shape, were built for testing. Results have shown a significant improvement in various aspects of primer performance, including omni-directional pressure transferral and increased energy release rates. Reliable, high performance priming of explosives is now achievable for a much wider application range.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) are of growing interest in a wide variety of applications. Pattern recognition, speech processing, financial analysis, signal processing and process control are at present the most successful ones. This paper is an attempt to illustrate the potentiality of ANN applied to mineral processing. An introduction to the technology of ANN is first proposed to describe the various components and to explain the various phases encountered in setting up a network. Then examples are given to illustrate the use of ANN dynamic modelling of mineral processing units or plants and in process control.

A survey was undertaken on the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter in which samples of slag and matte were taken along the length of the integrated flash smelting furnace and analysed to determine the variation of nickel and iron concentration. At the same time the oxygen potential of the slag and matte was measured using disposable tip solid-state oxygen probes. The results show that the oxygen potential of the slag is higher than that of the matte and that both decrease from the reaction shaft end to the slag tap hole end of the furnace. The slag and matte are not at equilibrium except towards the tap hole end. Reduction of nickel and magnetite from the slag occurs before the slag enters the slag-cleaning appendage by reaction with iron in the matte. Thermodynamic modelling and laboratory experiments showed that the equilibrium nickel and magnetite contents of the slag in the absence of a carbonaceous reducing agent are about 0.4 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively. A carbonaceous reductant is required to obtain a lower nickel content in the slag.

The optimisation of capital in the total planning context has broadly two components: ò maximising the efficient utilisation of capital against competing capital demands; and ò maximising the efficiency with which the industry's capital requirements are sourced. This paper focuses on the latter of these two concepts, as I wish to highlight that within the coal industry the inefficient sourcing of capital has resulted in the inefficient utilisation of capital. In discussing the optimisation of capital within the coal industry I would like to outline three fundamental issues which currently impact the industry and its application of capital: Initially, from the perspective of an independent investor, the perceived risk associated with investing in a volatile industry cycle has not permitted appropriate funding structures to be created thus leading to an inefficient utilisation of capital. Secondly, investors seeking out a windfall gain have established a practice of trading in the assets rather than encouraging recapitalisation. And lastly the mismatch of supply and demand leading to the establishment of new projects which include a percentage of offshore investment has fostered an environment of lower returns and subsequently a dilution of capital.

The Mesquite mine is a large, open pit, heap leach gold mine owned and operated by Gold Fields Operating Co.-Mesquite. The mine uses a fully integrated mine planning and reserve modeling software system developed at the mine. This system has recently been extended to include short-term mine planning, grade control, and daily production reporting. The grade control portion of the program uses a multiple indicator kriging (MIK) approach using the blast-hole spacing and exploration assays. The program permits ore control geologists and mine planning engineers to have immediate access to all the information.

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. Samples have been taken from a two-stage industrial gold roaster treating a pyrite/pyrthotite/arsenopyrite concentrate, in order to describe the mineral- ogy, composition and surface area of the calcines. Sulfides oxidised to produce a porous magnetite in the first stage and a porous hematite in the second, pyrite predominantly roasted via a pyrrhotite intermediate. Sulfur was eliminated in both the first and second stages whereas arsenic was eliminated in the first but retained in the second, partly as rims on hematite particles. The finer sized particles from the cyclones and electrostatic precipitator, whilst having the greatest surface area, were the most refractory with respect to gold solubilization, probably as a result of incomplete decomposition (through short-circuiting) in the first stage, and through a combination of factors such as overheating and entrapment of sub-micro- scopic gold in the second stage.

"The lining of a grinding mill has an important role in creating the conditions for the grinding process. The main purpose of the lining is to transfer the energy taken by the mill motor to the contents of a mill. The power draw curve of the mill, if measured with sufficiently short intervals, describes how well the lining works in lifting and mixing the material to be ground.The power draw curve can also be used for determining the volumetric filling of a mill. This new measuring technique was developed at the Pyhasalmi concentrator in 1989-90. The measuring device with its PC-connections offers an excellent tool for controlling volumetric mill filling, for maximizing throughput and for research purpose (e.g. process studies, mill linings design).The paper describes the new method and the results achieved at Outokumpu's concentrators.INTRODUCTIONVarious methods have been developed for measuring mill load; weighing, noise, etc. Weighing is one of the most reliable methods but installing the sensor to existing mills is often difficult. Besides the load measurement does not indicate the volumetric filling if the specific gravity of the mill feed fluctuates. Noise measurement has often failed with its sensitivity to various disturbance sources.As known, the power draw measurement is one of the most accurate measurements in grinding circuits and therefore it has been utilized in sophisticated control, e.g. in power peak seeking algorithms for maintaining maximum grinding efficiency.About 10 years ago power oscillation measurement was developed at Pyhasalmi concentrator. In this method the amplitude of the oscillation caused by the lifters was measured. The oscillation amplitude and the mill filling has quite a good correlation and together with the power draw measurement it could be used for maximizing mill throughput (Koivistoinen and Miettunen, 1989). The main difficulties in this method were that the dependence between mill filling and the amplitude is unlinear and that the dependence also is individual for each mill.The method developed during 1989-90 is also based on the power oscillation but on its phase shift. In principle level of the material in a mill is measured. The method has been successfully used for maximizing throughput at Pyhasalmi and Enonkoski concentrators and at Harjavalta slag concentrator."

The common approach of designing blasts on a trial and error basis is quickly coming to an end. When utilizing the full scale blast environment, trial and error can quickly become cost prohibitive and leaves much to be desired in terms of true blast diagnostics. In these situations testing is usually only continued until a perceived improvement is achieved and when the gross undesirables in blast results are removed. This does does not preclude, however, that further improvements of up to 100% or more can not be obtained.

The Jim Bridger Coal Mine, operated by Bridger Coal Co., is located in Sweetwater County, WY about 56 km (35 miles) northeast of Rock Springs. Bridger Coal is a joint ven¬ture between Nerco Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Co. The permit boundary encompasses more than 81 km&apos;- (20,000 acres) on the western side of the Continental Divide. Since the mine began opera¬tions in 1974, it has produced about 82 Mt (90 million st) of coal while moving about 344 hm3 (450 million cu yd) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 4.5 Mt to 6.4 Mt (5 million to 7 million st) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on-site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2000-MW generating station. Electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid that includes Oregon, Idaho and northern California. Geology The mine is located on the northeast flank of the Rock Springs uplift. This is a broad, asymmetrical anticlinal feature about 97 km (60 miles) long and 56 km (35 miles) wide with a north-trending axis. This uplift separates the Green River Basin to the west and the Great Divide and Washakie Basins to the east. Precambrian rocks on the apex of the uplift are estimated to be 5200 m (17,000 ft) above the Precambrian rocks in the Green River and Washakie Basins. Normal faults with generally less than 30-m (100-ft) vertical displacement cut through the uplift. The dip of strata on the flanks is generally between 3° and 15°.

In-situ leaching of gold deposits has not become an option largely as a result the lack of suitability of cyanide as a lixiviant due to sluggish kinetics and high dependence on the availability of oxygen. A second problem area is the excessive cost of drilling the required number of injection and production wells needed to service a wellfield capable of maintaining any significant throughput or providing and acceptable level of gold production. Well spacing in in-situ leaching operations is limited by solution life, dissolution rate, and the need for solution control. With cyanide the life of an active solution capable of dissolving significant gold is severely limited by the availability of oxygen which cannot be readily replaced while the solution remains underground. The extremely slow gold dissolution rate also necessitates excessive contact periods in order to dissolve coarse gold.

The University of Hawaii, Ocean Basins Division (OBD) shares, equally with the University of Mississippi, Continental Shelf Division (CSD), congressional funding for the Marine Minerals Technology Center, a Generic Minerals Center under the U.S. Department of the Interior&apos;s Mineral Institutes Program. The State of Hawaii supports the program by the provision of salaries for the Executive and Technical Directors and by the provision of fiscal, administrative, and facilities support through the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, and the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. The Center&apos;s program of research, technology development and education is multi-disciplinary and international in scope. Blasting is one of the most important operations involved in surface coal mining. The removal of over-burden waste in surface coal mines of India had experienced many improvements in terms of blasting, explosives selection, blast design, equipment selection, deployment. etc. Two case studies of very large surface coal mines have particular importance in their blasting operations. Both these units have been equipped with large capacity excavating machines, hauling units and also have some difficult mining situations. Blasting is done in benches in close proximity to human dwellings and over coal seams developed by underground methods with problems of high wall stability etc, as well. The various steps taken to improve the blasting operations ensure smooth operation of the equipment to meet the targetted coal production.

An examination was conducted on the impact of roof conditions and the mining cycle in determining a representative respirable mass concentration at the mid-shearer location on a longwall panel. Multiple personal gravimetric dust samplers, operated at a flow rate of 2.0 lpm, were used at different locations along the face to isolate the concentrations and variances associated with good and bad roof conditions under both the cutting and cleaning mode of operation. The number of samples needed to estimate the population variance at a given confidence level was analyzed. In addition, the statistical analysis showed that the coefficient of variation of dust concentrations at different locations and under different conditions ranged from 0.185 to 0.475, with an average value of 0.283. The estimates of the average dust concentration for a shift and the variance of the dust concentrations were calculated. A total of 48 data points were available for an [a x b] factorial ANOVA (analysis of variance). The estimates of the variance components were determined. The results from F-tests indicated that both the roof conditions and mining operations had a significant effect on the respirable dust concentration. There was no significant interaction effect between mining operations and roof conditions. In conclusion, this study shows that not only should sampling and analytical errors be considered in determining the required number of samples for a good estimate of the long-range exposures of miners, but also fluctuations of concentrations due to mining operations and geological conditions should be taken into account.
