This paper presentation regards the European Union’s project “I.C.E.A. - Identification Colors of Explosives and Blasting Accessories (Agreement number – HOME/2010/ISEC/AG/071 – 30 – CE – 0447240/00-11), submitted under the call for proposal “ISEC 2010 ACTION GRANT” of the “Prevention and Fight against Crime” Program of European Commission. The main objective of the project is to simplify counter-terrorism security measures and the procedures for visual identification of blasting devices.

THE State of Nevada, known par excellence as "the Silver State," occupies the major portion of the wide plateau, or so-called Great Basin, lying between the Sierra Nevada range on the west and the Wahsatch range of the Rocky Mountains on the east. It extends from the 114th degree to the 120th degree of longitude, west of Greenwich. It is limited, on the north, by the 42d degree of latitude, and on the extreme south by the 35th degree of latitude. Its general shape is that of an irregular parallelogram, from which the lower or southwestern portion has been cut off by a diagonal southeasterly line; the missing portion forms a part of the State of California on the west. The Great Basin is made up of a succession of low hills, or minor mountain ranges, running very nearly north and south, with long valleys between them. All of these mountains are more or less metalliferous. On the western rim, marking the eastern flank or foothills of the Sierra, we find granites, porphyries, and propylites. Here we note the great Comstock lode, with its free-milling gold and silver ores, and still further south the once prominent and the now reviving gold and silver-bearing districts of Esmeralda County, Nevada, and of Morro County, California. Next, at some distance to the east, we find the mining districts at and near Unionville, in Humboldt County. (Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) IN the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to "qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of. counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were. engaged on both sides ; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton ; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose. The bentonite industry in Europe includes both the smectite and hormite groups of clay minerals. The smectites are, essentially, a compendium of cationic differentiatable montmorillonite platelets which can be expanded in liquid media, whereas, members of the hormite group are characterized by fibrous and chain structured lattices which are non-expandable. As was pointed out in the March '78 issue of Industrial Minerals, each of the minerals in these groups has acquired a variety of names due to historic or regional usage.

After European Council’s Directive 93/15/EEC of 5 April 1993 on the harmonization of the provisions relating to the placing on the market and supervision of explosives for civil uses, the so called ”Intra-Community Transfer of Civil Explosives” has been possible between users in the member States of the European Union. In line with this new approach, the placing on the market and the supervision of explosives for civilian use are subject to essential safety requirements. The explosives market in Italy is regulated by the ”day consumption of explosives” that imposes the user to have on site just the strict quantities of explosives and accessories that are necessary for the daily drill and blast activities. Any eventually advanced explosives’ quantities should be destroyed, either returned to the provider’s magazine until the 24:00 hours of the same day.

THE object of the experiments reported in this paper is to determine the eutectic composition of copper and tin and to determine the location of the part of the liquidus line immediately above the eutectic composition in copper. Three methods were used in the investigation: (1) the method of dissolving copper in a bath of molten tin at constant temperature, with the idea that when the bath was saturated with copper its copper content, by analysis, together with the temperature at which the saturation took place would locate a point on the liquidus line (2) the method of the differential cooling curves, and (3) the method of microscopic examination. This paper is principally concerned with the results of the last two methods mentioned. The results of the first method, that of dissolving copper in molten tin, did not agree with the .results of Miller,1 by the same method, nor with the results of other investigators by other methods, nor yet with the results of the cooling-¬curve experiments and microscopic examination reported here.

Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Limited has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilising spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilise the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited has maintained an interest in the screening of iron ore fines (nominally -6 mm). However, no dry screening process had successfully demonstrated acceptable separating efficiencies at high tonnage rates, low operating costs, and mechanical reliability when screening iron ore fines (containing up to 6% free moisture) at sizes of around 1 to 2 mm. A new type of vibrating inclined screen has recently been developed which is claimed to have a non-blinding screening surface. It was decided to test a pilot scale unit in an existing pilot plant located at Hamersley's facilities at Dampier, Western Australia. The appropriate operating parameters such as vibration speed and feed rate were determined using one fine ore type. Mats with different aperture sizes, and different feed moisture contents were also tested. Trials were then conducted on various fine ore types to indicate the effect of different size distributions on separating efficiencies. The effects of feed moisture content were determined with these ore types, and a blend of lump (nominally -30+6 mm) and fines was tested to compare the screen's performance with that of the bottom deck of the minesite product Screens.

A mineral rights holding can ultimately only be turned to account by the profitable mining of ore on that property. The evaluation of South African gold mineral rights properties must therefore be carried out by assuming that they have potential to form part or all of a future gold mine. Such analysis involves the simulation of many of the estimation procedures that are normally carried out in a full feasibility study of a new mining venture but using far less data. This paper describes in detail the evaluation procedures that may be applied to an individual property and then indicates how these techniques can be applied to a whole mineral rights portfolio.

Following the delineation of significant extra ore reserves during 1990, the decision was made to expand production from 350,000 tonnes of run of mine ore per year to initially 600,000 tonnes increasing to 750,000 tonnes per year. The existing plant consists of a conventional three stage crushing plant followed by a heavy medium separation plant that produces a product prior to grinding. Grinding is conducted in three stages of ball mill in series. Alternatives examined for expanding production included: aò SAG mill - ball mill circuit replacing the secondary and tertiary stages of crushing, the heavy medium plant and the existing ball mills; and, upgrading of the existing circuit configuration.

Proper technical appraisal of a coal deposit and the determination of optimum open- pit mine design can only be made after detailed examination of a number of interrelated geographical and geological factors. Initial evaluation of the geography and the overall attitude of the coal measures can often determine the most likely coal mining technique. Conclusions reached in the early stage of the investigations frequently dictate the quality and quantity of particular types of data required from further drilling of the deposit. In many cases, insufficient information relating to the overall engineering aspects of a coal deposit is derived from drilling. Little or no attention is paid in the exploratory phase to such things as the specific gravity of selected overburden samples, floor conditions, clay content of the overburden and selected strength tests on cores. This is a direct result of geologists treating coal deposits purely in geological terms without sufficient consideration being given to the engineering parameters required for a proper evaluation of the deposit.

High-speed photography has proven to be an extremely valuable tool for the evaluation of blasting practices in the Warrior Coal Basin. A research project, coordinated by Nelson Brothers Inc. and The University of Alabama's Mineral Engineering Department, has centered on the use of high-speed photography to study and analyze blast performance. A large number of production shots in this region has been filmed and studied. The data obtained from the films have been used to establish graphical relationships between certain blast parameters and overall shot performance. These relationships will be used to develop a computer model that will estimate cast results from a given burden explosive energy combination. This paper describes the methods and procedures used to develop these relationships. The results of the research are discussed along with plans for continuing the research project.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

Haul trucks have the potential to generate large amounts of respirable dust. This respirable dust has been shown to be a health hazard to personnel, especially if it contains a high silica content. Lack of dust sampling data from haul trucks prompted the completion of a study to quantify respirable dust concentrations. These field studies were conducted measuring instantaneous respirable dust at stationary locations from passing haul trucks at a stone quarry and a coal mine site. Fugitive dust levels from haul trucks were analyzed to characterize dust dispersion. This analysis will indicate safe following distances for haul trucks and other heavy equipment to avoid over-exposure of respirable dust from the lead haul truck.

Several empirical equations to estimate coal pillar strength have been presented in academic studies. The development processes of these equations are similar and are usually obtained by fitting the mathematical function (curve) to field data. One of the best criteria to evaluate the quality of fitting for such equations is the correlation coefficient R2, which has limited applicability. It is necessary to calculate the correlation coefficient access to the initial data for which the equation is presented; this is impossible for many coal pillar strength formulas. This paper presents a new approach based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude to compare the coal pillar strength. This approach utilizes a combination of parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), function type and degrees of freedom. The confidence level of constants is subsequently formed and the correlation coefficient becomes more comprehensive. Therefore, for an effective comparison, the efficiency and accuracy of coal pillar strength formula can be used. Explosive manufacturers have for many years provided a service to the mining industry which has,until recently, been unchallenged by mine operators. Today mine operators are more aware of the properties of explosives required to perform particular tasks within their operations. These properties can be reliably quantified using the test procedures described in this paper for emulsion adn ANFO based explosives. Details of an end-user sampling programme desgined to provide quality checks on explosives supplied to a mine site are also discussed.

The first introduction of automatic control systems for flotation occurred about fifteen years ago. The early control work coincided with the introduction of on-line assaying using XRF techniques. This OSA availability, coupled with the emergence of small digital computers suitable for process control in the late 1960-s, meant that the necessary process information and control hardware existed for flotation control experiments. A period of intensive research related to flotation control. ensued. A great deal of effort was devoted to the development of mathematical models of flotation. Plant experimentation sought to understand the effects of a range of flotation variables on the process. Finally, control loops were proposed and plant tested. An evolutionary pattern emerges when the range of flotation control installations is examined. The earliest systems had as objectives process stabilisation using reagent control. There were also some early attempts at flotation optimisation procedures, again using reagent variation. Current work is still associated with the same objectives. One of the difficulties with flotation control has been to recognise and define clear and precise control objectives. More emphasis is now placed on cleaner control which has the advantage that the objectives are usually well defined. A number of flotation control systems which cover a range of control system types is discussed. Based on this accumulated experience,a list of good and bad practice in flotation control is Proposed.

Acid mist generation is a major concern in zinc, copper and nickel electrowinning industries and there is a strong environmental drive to control its emission into the work environment. Foaming reagents are typically added to the electrolyte to alleviate this problem. In zinc electrowinning, Licorice and Saponin are examples of foaming reagents used for this purpose. In order for the foaming reagent to be effective, its foaming behavior must be determined. In this work, a test procedure was developed to study the foaming characteristics of various surfactants for use as foaming agents to control acid mist in aqueous metal electrowinning. This new test was termed as "mini-flotation test" and it was used to study the foaming behavior of a large number of reagents in an industrial zinc sulfate electrolyte under simulated zinc electrowinning conditions (gas sparging). In addition, the influence of important process parameters such as current density, electrolyte temperature, reagent addition level and sulfuric acid concentration on the foaming characteristics of the electrolyte for each surfactant were investigated. The results of this study have identified the most important factors that influence foam formation, growth and stability. This method could be used as a process control for reagent addition in the cellhouse by generating a calibration curve for the optimum electrolyte conditions.

The recent renewal of interest in hydrometallurgical routes for copper production has been brought about by the possible future reliance on mixed ores and lower grade deposits, environmental aspects, and energy considerations.A number of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of copper have recently been proposed. Flowsheets are developed for two processes which incorporate several treatment methods being experimentally studied in Australia.In the first process a cupric chloride leach is followed by electrowinning whilst the second is based on the formation of cuprous ions, stabuized by acetonitrile and subsequent disproportionation to cupric ions and metallic copper. For the purpose of comparison, flowsheets were also developed for the Arbiter and Cymet processes.Process economics are estimated for the four processes and the results are discussed in relation to competitive pyrometallurgy. None of the four hydrometallurgical processes, with possible exception of the Cymet process, appears to be competitive with established large scale and newly developed pyrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite.However, because the economics of the individual hydrometallurgical processes depend strongly on specific conditions, a "tailored" process may be competitive with pyrometallurgy in particular circumstances.

The increased use of continuous miners to extract thicker coal seams has necessitated the use of enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Due to the increased face size, more ventilation is required to effectively dilute the liberated methane down to acceptable levels. If more air is directed to the face an increase in the entrainment of dust creates an increased potential for workers to be exposed to dust. To enable the ventilation systems to reduce the methane levels and the levels of the airborne dust the ventilation systems in the heading have to be carefully designed. The matter is made more complicated through the use of other ventilation methods like jet fans, air-moving sprayfans on the continuous miners and high capacity scrubbers on the continuous miners. To enable the design of a balanced ventilation system in seam heights of over five metres requires methods that consider the system in a three- dimensional manner rather than in a two-dimensional fashion. Through the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with appropriate methods of taking underground face ventilation readings these problems can be solved in a cost effective way. Using computer modelling, ventilation methods can be designed and assessed instead of using costly underground trials to test the alternatives. Use of this system has led to a higher level of ventilation design as well as a more effective method to combat the health and safety hazards in coal mine headings.
