But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way: there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution arrived.

In the 1850s, miners began experimenting with liquid nitroglycerine on a limited scale. This was a very sensitive and dangerous explosive. Fortunately in the 1860s, Alfred Nobel succeeded in stabilizing nitroglycerine by absorbing it in kieselguhr-and a new product, dynamite, was born. With it, miners were able to unleash the great energy of nitroglycerine for blasting purposes. But dynamite was still a very sensitive explosive. In subsequent years, other explosives of various strengths and characteristics were developed, such as blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamites, (all containing some nitroglycerine or nitrostarch), and liquid oxygen explosives. These products and their variations supplied the blasting trade for many years. A grained ammonium nitrate product containing some carbonaceous material entered the market in the 1930s. This explosive had below-zero sensitivity-meaning: a No. 6 blasting cap imbedded in it would not detonate it. A more sensitive initiator, called a primer, was needed to detonate this mixture. From Rags to Primacord to Solid-State The first initiator for an explosive charge was probably a rag slowly burning its way to the charge; this method was quite unreliable. Then came the burning fuse, which was an improvement. Next was the nonelectric blasting cap initiated by a fuse. With these initiators, a miner needed quick reflexes and good legs; upon lighting the fuse, he had to run immediately for cover. Development of the electric blasting cap that allowed for accurate timing eliminated this hazard; the electric cap, however, introduced other safety problems because of its susceptibility to extraneous electricity, e.g., ground currents, lightning, and static electricity. These caps also became available in millisecond delays. Development in the mid-1930s of Primacord, a detonating fuse insensitive to electrical currents or impact, further reduced blasting hazards, and is generally acknowledged as the safest known means of initiation. Eventually, Primacord millisecond connectors also became available for delay patterns in blasting. In the mid-1960s, the Primadet delay was introduced; it is a practical nonelectric detonator system that offers the precise timing of electric blasting caps-and is immune to the hazards or effects of extraneous electricity. Recently, Research Energy of Ohio, Inc. introduced a new type of solid-state blasting machine that combines a sequential timer and delay caps. It enables the efficient breakage of rock with a minimum amount of shock, ground vibration, and noise. Improvements in Blast-Hole Drilling World War II created an enormous demand for coal and other minerals in the U.S. and elsewhere. Great efforts and large amounts of capital were spent to find new mineral deposits and develop better mining methods. But while mechanization in mining proceeded at a rapid pace particularly in open-cut work, there was a definite lag in developing new or improved machines for drilling blast holes. The industry continued to depend largely on horizontal, churn, and pneumatic drills. No better machine was available for large scale production. The need for improvement in this phase of mining became more acute in the post-war years. Despite efforts toward further mechanization, mining costs rose rapidly because of mounting inflation and increasingly high wages. In most operations, drilling and blasting the overburden became the principal item of cost. Therefore, whatever size holes were being drilled, the holes had to be spaced so that any foot of the bore hole could be loaded with the maximum load required for the number of cubic yards of material that each foot of the hole was carrying. Its a pleasure to be with you this afternoon and to talk briefly on one of my favorite subjects -- the U.S. sulphur industry. As our Chairman mentioned, I have been associated with the sulphur industry either directly or indirectly for the last twenty years, both on the production side and as a consumer. Sulphur, while unseen and relatively unknown to most people, is like margarine ... that ubiquitous spread ... that is yellow and nearly omnipresent in the industrial world. It is because sulphur, in some form, is required in nearly all aspects of our economy that makes its study so interesting to me as a researcher. An analysis of the sulphur outlook requires examination of such industries as fertilizer, paints and pigments, copper and zinc, uranium, petroleum, chemicals, pulp and paper and textiles - just to name a few. Of course, because its use is so widespread and ever-changing it is difficult to develop and maintain a good understanding of the sulphur industry. It is also a problem to cover the industry in a short discussion and to project its really dynamic nature. Hut, if you will bear with me, I will attempt the task. First of all, let me say that sulphur today is a world commodity and to a large extent moves freely in world trade; nearly a third of the world's sulphur or something over 15 million tons in 1974 entered international trade. However, today our interest is in the current changing sulphur picture in the U.S., with particular emphasis on the western part of the country.

The world continues to change and with it the supply of minerals and metals, the location of centres of production of primary metal and the increasing levels of metals and materials recycling. New technologies are being developed to meet the ongoing search by industry for lower costs, cleaner production and new markets. To keep abreast with these changes, and to utilise fully, the potential benefits of these technical advances, the industry will need a professional workforce having different knowledge, skills and professional attributes than in the previous millennium. What are these skills and attributes? How to best attract and develop the metallurgists of the future, and provide for the ongoing educational and research needs of the industry?

The channel effect is a phenomenon that takes place with decoupling explosive charges; an air shock wave propagating ahead of the detonation wave in the annular space around the explosive charge compresses the charge so that the process of detonation is modified and even stopped. For commercial explosives, such as AN/FO slurries and emulsions, the channel effect causes partial detonation under certain conditions. To simulate and evaluate the phenomenon, a hydrodynamic model was developed based on the assumption that the pre-shock wave is produced by Mach reflection at the tube walls. Based on instrumented experimental studies with the above explosives in diameters ranging from 25 to 90 mm in pipe sizes ranging from 35 to 127 mm, it has been possible to demonstrate that a criterion for failure based on a critical impulse concept fits the experimental data well. Critical impulse values for the various explosives tested are presented along with the necessary correlations between charge and borehole diameter required to produce this.

SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

For two thousand years and more, we insular Britons have been grateful for the existence of the narrow strip of water that separates us from mainland Europe. It has given us a sense of security against invaders, though it has been breached many times. The first recorded serious consideration of a fixed crossing of the English Channel was in around 1802, when it was suggested to Napoleon I. The motive was not entirely peaceable and the British Navy, who saw themselves as defenders of our shores, were decidedly unenthusiastic A whole series of imaginative schemes were proposed in the course of the nineteenth century, embracing viaducts, immersed tubes, artificial islands as resting places for the horses which were to draw carriages, as well as mechanically bored tunnels. The first Channel Tunnel Company was formed in 1872, and an application for permission to construct a tunnel was made to the British parliament. A Colonel Beaumont, of the Corps of Royal Engineers designed and constructed a machine which, in around 1882, bored over a mile of tunnel out to sea from Britain which exists to this day.

The six main drives needed to build 55 miles of 4.8 and 7.7 metre i.d. tunnels in 33 months called for careful co-ordination of the design of tunnel boring machines and linings. The implications of these requirements are discussed, with particular reference to the selection of tunnel liners. The solutions adopted are detailed and details are given of the specifications and procedures adopted. The design methods employed for liners are outlined. The construction methods are described and current performance figures given.

Introduction The world's largest known deposits of natural sodium sulphate (Glauber salt), generally termed 'alkali ' throughout western Canada, are located in the Province of Saskatchewan: reserves are estimated to exceed 200,000,000 tons. These are surface deposits resulting from the recent or present-day natural evaporation of brines, in which respect they are similar to those occurring in certain other parts of the world, as in semi-arid sections of the United States, Russia, Germany and Austria. In some areas, underground deposits formed hundreds of thousands of years ago have been _encountered in drilling, and indications are that they also were formed under arid or semi-arid conditions. The master key to the formation of deposits of natural sodium sulphate, wherever they occur, is a climate, either past or present, under which evaporation exceeds precipitation over a considerable period of time. Commercial development of the Saskatchewan deposits began about thirty years ago. Previously, the demand for sodium sulphate had largely been met by salt cake produced as a by-product in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid from common salt. The rapid increase in the production of Kraft paper and, more recently, the development of synthetic detergent materials, have caused a marked increase in the market for sodium sulphate. This chemical gives the extra toughness to Kraft paper and is used in detergent compositions in proportions as high as 75 per cent. Saskatchewan now has six commercial plants producing natural sodium sulphate. Production from each in the fiscal years 1947 and 1948 is shown in Table I. The newest and latest plant is that of Saskatchewan Minerals, at Chaplin, which 1s designed to produce up to 150,000 tons of salt cake, 98.5 to 99.5 per cent pure, yearly. This is equivalent to about 24 percent of the total United States production of crude commercial salt cake for 1947.

THERE is probably no more interesting group of mineral fuels to be found in any country than that occurring within the limits of the new State of Colorado. The supplies are so abundant, and the occurrence and distribution are so favorable for easy development and transportation to the future manufacturing centres of the State, that they are destined to play a very important part in the material growth and prosperity of the region, the more so because of the rich and varied stores of ores awaiting metallurgical treatment, and the comparative scarcity of timber for fuel. From a purely scientific point, also, these lignitic coals form an interesting and important series. An examination of their geological occurrence and relations opens up new and important questions regarding the comparative value of various kinds of geological evidence, while a study of the character and composition of this class of fuels, which forms a connecting link, as it were, between the lignites and the true bituminous coals, may lead to a more thorough and accurate classification of mineral fuels. The analyses here presented are from samples, of not less than fifty pounds each, obtained by myself during the summer of 1875, and may be regarded as representing very fairly the average run of

IN many schemes of classification and description the term contact-deposit has been somewhat loosely applied to all accumulations of useful minerals (other than those of unquestioned sedimentary origin) which are enclosed between two different rocks. As thus used, the term may include deposits of widely differing origin, and, unless qualified, is not in place in a genetic classification. The present paper deals with a special class of contact-deposits. In many geological provinces, granular igneous rocks, such as granite, diorite and syenite, have broken through and invaded sedimentary rocks. The molten magma may in part have reached the surface and there solidified with relative rapidity as a lava. The largest masses of it, however, did not reach the surface, but cooled very slowly at considerable depth under great pressure, and eventually consolidated into a rock of granitic texture. Uplifts and extensive erosion may have followed; and at the present day, in many places, thousands of feet of material have been removed, bringing to the surface the intrusive granular rocks and their once deep-seated contacts with the sedimentaries which they shattered at the time of in-

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Carbon as a reductant, additive or filler is an essential element in the processing of metallic ores and the manufacture of iron and steel in the metallurgical industry. In most cases, the element carbon is derived from coal and its carbon derivatives. The properties of carbon required for the different processes in each metallurgical sector vary significantly and, for this reason, matching the correct carbon product for each specific process has become an important if not vital function in all sectors of this industry. This selection process, however, has become increasingly difficult. In many cases, the substitution of new products, despite being similar in all relevant chemical specification characteristics to previous products, has resulted in different performance properties relative to that expected. Under these circumstances, the prediction of performance of unknown carbon products has become fraught with difficulties unprecedented in the past. In order to initiate an investigation into addressing these issues, a test case was selected for indepth study the results of which are reported in this paper. The case concerned the use of a specific carbon feed in a conventional submerged arc furnace which gave rise to an unprecedented amount of unreacted or only partially consumed residue trapped in the frozen slag on the refractory walls of the furnace. During the course of these investigations, different advanced analytical technologies were employed including, inter alia, Raman spectroscopy, surface dimensional tests, organic petrology and various thermal reactivity factors. All results have been integrated into a multidisciplinary assessment presented in summary in this paper. Based on the above, and previous experience, the concept of an all-embracing 3-D coal-carbon ?framework? is briefly introduced. This approach has succeeded in obtaining greater depth of knowledge and a better understanding of the issues at stake with specific reference to the organic composition, structure, texture, internal surface area and consequent reactivity of the carbon materials concerned. In consequence, it would now appear that various properties of relevance to the metallurgical industry may be predicted with greater precision than has hitherto fore been possible.

Hydrodynamic conditions such as gas dispersion, mixing intensity and solids suspension are known to govern the metallurgical performance of the flotation process. Understanding flotation cell hydrodynamics is therefore important for the optimisation of existing cells and for the design of the larger and more efficient cells which are needed to handle the finer, lower grade ores currently being mined. This paper presents the results of numerous studies that have been carried out to characterise the hydrodynamic conditions in a number of different types of flotation machines both in Australia and South Africa. Measurement techniques that have been developed to determine gas dispersion and other hydrodynamic properties in industrial flotation cells are described along with applications for their use. The results show distinct differences between the way flotation cells are operated in the two countries.

This paper reviews various bauxite classification schemes with respect to the differences in texture, composition and geological associations of the deposits. It demonstrates that a techno-economic classification, based on: a) associated rock type - lateritic versus karstic, b) content of aluminum ore minerals - gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, and c) gangue minerals (iron oxides etc.) has a geological basis with natural cut-off points for the bauxite types identified. Thus, this scheme is seen as applicable to bauxite resources. It also provides a basis for their rational exploitation taking into consideration the long-term interests of both the bauxite producing and consuming countries. Against this background, the industrial mineral or non-metallurgical grades of bauxite are seen as localised and relatively rare occurrences. Their consumption should, therefore, be aimed toward the specific (hence more remunerative) products as indicated by the bauxite characteristics.

A century ago the AIME meeting of 1899 was held at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco California in September. For his presidential address, James Douglas presented this paper which is reprinted in full with the kind permission of the AIME. It presents an interesting comparison relating to events and circumstances in the metallurgical industries at the close of last century. Being on the eve of a new century ourselves, the Editors of this volume of the COPPER 99-COBRE 99 Proceedings considered this paper would be of general interest, hence it is included here. Douglas believed in effective interchange of technical experiences and ideas. He considered the extreme secrecy surrounding the copper works at Swansea, Wales, the world center of copper only years before the time his paper was delivered, as one key reason for its decline, (and eventual closure of all copper plants there). In his paper, the pace of developments in various sectors such as transportation (railroads, the dominant means of I transportation at the time), the iron and steel and copper industries were examined, in much the same way as one might do but on the high technology of today. James Douglas was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada and spent his early life there. Forced to move to the United States for family and financial reasons, he went on to become a pioneer in the new Arizona copper industry, and with luck and good judgement with his interest in the new mining properties he also became very wealthy. Douglas was an accomplished mining and metallurgical engineer. He was the first President of Phelps Dodge and helped transform the small trading company of Anson Phelps and William Dodge into a mining giant.

One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.

Whole rock geodhemical analyses from samples of Potosi gneiss within the Willyama Supergroup have been utilised to identify geochemical trends towards Pb/Zn ore positions. Although the analyses come from disparate sources they have been incorporated in the data base only if locational, sampling, analytical, lithological and stratigraphic descriptors were reliable. These data have been statistically analysed using programmes of the GASP software package. A discriminant function has been derived which permits Potosi gneiss associated with the Pb/Zn lode horizons in the Broken Hill domain to be distinguished from Potosi gneiss in a similar stratigraphic position in the Maybell Domain. In the "near ore" position the Potosi gneiss has significantly lower mean Na2O and significantly higher mean MnO. Also mean Rb, CaO and K20 are higher and mean Sr lower. This discriminant function serves to identify areas prospective for Pb/Zn mineralisation. A second discriminant function based on MnO, Si02 and K20/Na20 gives a semi- quantitative indication of proximity to ore.

The efficient purification of soldering waste material can be achieved in a single operational step by the electrolytic refining in pure hydrochloric acid - tin-chloride media. The complex formation of the ionic species may offer a beneficial level of natural inhibition. Using the PCR (periodic current reversal) technology, is efficient in affecting the morphology of the cathodic deposit. In order to optimize the process, the investigation of the solution stability and the electrode reactions is essential. The natural tendency of the Sn(II) oxidation and precipitation can be overcome by properly controlling the concentration of the main components and the ratio of Sn(IV)/Sn(II) in the electrolyte solution. Polarization curves were obtained for different concentrations tin and hydrochloric acid. Conclusions referring to the electrode reaction were derived from the overvoltage - current plots. The morphology of the deposit can be correlated with the exchange current density, also determined from the polarization curves. The cathodic current efficiency and the morphology of deposited metal are affected by the distribution of tin species and the principal electrolysis parameters.
