(written discussion ?).-The effect of reducing gases on hot solid copper has been known for many years in the copper industry, and precautions taken to guard against it in the general practice in copper heating and annealing. In view of the statement that Bengough and Hill, in 1910, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gas within the copper itself, it is interesting to note that in Harper's Magazine for April, 1904, an article, "Life and Diseases of Metals," by Professor Heyn, illustrated the effect of reducing gases on copper by a photograph, which is shown in Fig. 1. This he entitled "Copper burst asunder by disease." After referring to the effect of hydrogen on steel, he makes the following remark: "Similar symptoms of poisoning, caused by hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen (as gas for lighting purposes), are apparent in copper when exposed to red heat. Not every kind of .copper is susceptible to this poisoning in equal degree. Copper per-fectly free of cuprous oxide is entirely exempt from poisoning. Most of the various coppers of commerce, however, contain cuprous oxide, formed during the smelting process while exposed to atmospheric influences. In such coppers, containing cuprous oxide, hydrogen causes a terrible disease on the copper being heated red hot. The copper bursts asunder and is permeated by cracks. This disease is practically incurable and can be eradicated by resmelting only. The results work destructively according to the amount of cuprous oxide contained in the copper." It must have been evident to Professor Heyn, as it was to us on reading this article, that the bursting asunder of the copper was clue to the formation of steam. Practical copper heaters have known for many years that it was quite possible to produce blisters, or large gas holes, in the interior of copper plates or bars by heating to a high temperature in reducing gases. These facts, of course, do not detract from the value of the study of the action of hydrogen gas that has been made by Mr. Pilling, but simply illustrate that the practical effect of reducing gases on furnace-refined copper has long been a troublesome factor in the heating or annealing of that metal.

NORMAN B. PILLING (author's reply to discussion *).-The discussion by Mr, Bassett raised one or two points that deserve further discussion. The printed figure for the lead content of the copper used was 0.015 per cent. and not 0.15 per cent., upon which his comment was based. A copper having the latter figure would, of course, be quite unusual. Mr. Bassett takes exception to the writer's statement regarding the distribution of cuprous oxide in wrought copper and states that "the FIG. 1.--ROLLED AND ANNEALED SHEET. ETCHED WITH AMMONIA AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. X 75. eutectic of copper with cuprous oxide is usually found between the crystals of pure copper, whether in the cast or the wrought form." While it is very well known that during the solidification of cast copper the cuprous oxide is segregated completely as an envelope of cuprous oxide-copper eutectic around the crystals of copper free from oxide, it is the writer's opinion that, as a result of repeated rolling, this eutectic structure is quite destroyed and the small particles of cuprous oxide become widely scattered, and in the recrystallization following, during annealing, the rearrangement of the grain boundaries takes place with much indifference to the actual distribution of these particles. In the accompanying micrograph, taken from a rolled and annealed sheet, the random distribution of the small cuprous-oxide particles with reference to the location of the grain boundaries may be seen.

THE following discussion was suggested by an experiment of Mr. Krom, the manufacturer of air-jigs, to illustrate the superiority of air over water as a medium of concentration. The paper is written in the interest of no system of concentration, but simply to test the experiment, and, perchance, to add something to the general fund of information on the subject. To speak of testing an experiment by a theoretical discussion, may seem a misuse of terms, but the theories concerning falling bodies and the resistance of fluids are pretty well crystallized into laws, which may properly be used to show where experiments which seem to refute them were improperly performed, and that instead of refitting they only corroborate. It is well known that a sphere of galena 1/8 inch in diameter, and a sphere of quartz 1/2 inch in diameter, are equal falling in water ; that is, these two spheres, being placed together in a column of water at rest or in motion, will practically remain together, falling or rising together, or remaining in suspension. The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). The dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions was studied by determining the time required for the solvents to dissolve gold leaf. Minute traces, even 0.5 ppm, of sulphide ion retard the dissolution of gold, and this behavior cannot be accounted for by the presently accepted hypotheses involving oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation. On the other hand, traces of the salts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium considerably accelerate the dissolution. The beneficial effect of lead is dependent upon the pH and cyanide ion concentration of the solution.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE practice of carbonizing steel for the purpose of case-hardening has assumed great commercial importance within the past, 10 years. Formerly, case-hardened steel was held in more or less contempt, since it. was considered a cheap substitute for tool-steel. This is no longer the case. The development of the motor-car industry, and coincidentally that of modern alloy-steels, has resulted in overcoming many difficulties formerly experienced in case-hardening. This result has been accomplished by increased knowledge regarding the analysis of the steel which would respond most readily to case-hardening, and by more careful methods of treatment of the carbonized steel. The ordinary method of carbonizing consists in packing the steel with the carbonizing-material in cast-iron boxes and placing them in a furnace at a temperature of from 1,500° to 1,900° F. for a time sufficient to give the required depth of cc case." The steel is then either quenched directly from the box, or is allowed to cool without unpacking, and finally given a single hardening-heat., or, for special work, two or three heats. During the year 1911, more than 100,000 tons of carbonizing-material was sold in the United States, at an average price of probably $55 per ton. More than 85 per cent. of this material consisted of granulated bone. Within the past four years, many manufactured compounds have been placed on the market, consisting largely of some form of carbon or carbonaceous material, with or without the addition of chemicals. Steel will absorb carbon placed in contact with it at the temperature of the atmosphere. The reaction is exceedingly slow, but. increases rapidly with increasing temperature. Cyanidation of gold ore results in formation not only of Na[Au(CN)2], but also cyanometallate complexes of some transition metals. During subsequent gold extraction from such solutions and pulps, using activated carbons (??), a number of problems arise. An effective solution of the problem is not possible without detailed knowledge of the interaction mechanism of transition metals cyanide complexes with AC particles. The chemical properties of AC particles and graphene, saturated with [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3), were studied by XPS, ESR, SQUID, and DFT. The obtained results were compared with the data on AC adsorption of anionic form of Ag(I), Au(I), Cd(II), Hg(II), Cr(III), Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(III), Rh(III), Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Pt(IV) cyanide complexes. The adsorption of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) on AC from aqueous solutions in air is accompanied with oxidation of ?u(I) atoms. Besides, Cu(II) and Cu(III) compounds were found on AC surface. Quantum-chemical calculations confirmed the possibility of formation of Cu(I) complex with carbene-like sites of AC. The reactions of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) complexes and aromatic carbenes and their cation-radical were theoretically studied at DFT PBE level to obtain the information on adsorption of cyanometallate complexes on AC. Carbenes with different fragments were regarded as a model of activated carbons, which have free edge sites with paired o and n electrons. It was shown that [Cu(CN)2]- bounds firmly with triplet carbene, if one Cu-CN bond breaks. The dissociation process occurs through a multi-step spin-crossing mechanism to reduce total spin multiplicity of the metal-carbene complex. The behavior of transition element complexes in contact with AC in aqueous solutions is determined by the following characteristics: geometrical structure of ionic complexes; nature of ligands bonded to the central atom; concentration of reactive oxygen species in solution and its pH; nature of binding sites of AC.

"Asbestos tailings are a typical serpentine, hydrated magnesium silicate, consisting primarily of antigorite and a few per cent of unrecovered fibrous chrysotile. Serpentine has unique thermal properties in that dehydroxylating calcination at 600 to 700°C can yield an amorphous structure in which most of the magnesia is liberated from the original bond with silica and thereby rendered chemically active. The amount of activated magnesia can be quantified by selective leaching with a weak acid such as acetic acid. Many wet processes have been proposed to extract magnesium values from calcined or natural serpentine by means of various acids and their ammonium salts. However, the only commercial utilization of serpentine today is found in dry processes such as the production of fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer .The present paper reviews the physical chemistry of the dehydroxylation of serpentine and also various wet and dry processes in order to provide a general view regarding the chemical transformation of asbestos tailings.IntroductionAsbestos fibers occur as chrysotile, a serpentine polymorph. More than nine tenths of mined asbestos ores consist of massive non-fibrous serpentine, primarily the polymorph antigorite, which is discarded as tailings after fiber extraction. For many decades, Quebec has been a world leader in the production of asbestos fibers. As a result, colossal tonnages of serpentine have accumulated in the Eastern Townships'!'. Serpentine minerals are found in large deposit s throughout the world, and significant research efforts have been made, particularly in Japan and the USSR, mostly in attempts to extract magnesia or silica values therefrom.The chemical composition of serpentine (chrysotile and antigorite) may be ideally expressed as Mg3Si2Os(OH). which corresponds to 43.7% MgO and 43.3% SiO2. Natural serpentines often contain a few per cent of Ni-bearing magnetite and other impurities, and therefore the contents of MgO and Si02are both about 40% or lower.Serpentine (hydrated magnesium silicate) is virtually insoluble in weak acids. However, when dehydroxylated under controlled conditions, ' it decomposes to an amorphous state in which magnesia and silica are isolated and chemically active. The magnesia so activated is readily soluble in weak acids. This unique characteristic of calcined serpentine, first discovered in 1942,, has since attracted the attention of innumerable researchers, whence many processes have been proposed."

Activities of Brazil in relation to deep seabed mineral resources development are carried out in the framework of two main national programmes. They are: (1) the Program for the Assessment of Mineral Resources of the Brazilian Continental Shelf (REMPLAC) and (2) the Programme for Prospecting and Exploration of Mineral Resources of the Area in the South Equatorial and Atlantic Ocean (PROAREA). REMPLAC aim to research and increase knowledge of the seabed and sub-soil, as well as to collect the necessary information to allow integrated management of the Brazilian Continental Shelf. Among the various research projects undertaken or planned on the framework of REMPLAC are: geology of the Brazilian continental shelf and adjacent ocean areas, organized in geological information system; digital bathymetric charts of the inner continental shelf at 1:100,000 scale; systematic research for sands, gravels, carbonates; placers, phosphorites, coal, cobalt-rich crusts, polymetallic sulphides and Gas hydrates. The PROAREA was prepared with three initial projects starting in 2010. One of them, the Project Geology of the South Atlantic and Equatorial organized in a Geographic Information System, aims to collect, collate, integrate and make available in a single environment all geo-referenced data and information available in Brazil and abroad on geology and mineral resources of the South Atlantic Ocean. The other two projects are for the research of cobalt-rich crust and polimetallic sulphides. These programme are developed with the participation of various segments of government agencies, research institutions and public enterprises. Marine scientific research and other activities from REMPLAC and PROAREA are carried out in partnership between the Geological Survey of Brazil, national research institutions from several Brazilian universities and the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation from the Brazilian Navy.

The reduction of zinc from lead blast furnace slags using hydrogen was studied at 1300¦C as part of a laboratory investigation of zinc fuming. To perform the experiments, 300 g "spent slag" was melted in a crucible. Hydrogen was then injected into the slag through a lance and fresh blast furnace slag was added regularly in small quantities over a period of 40 minutes. Zinc added in the fresh slag was reduced and the zinc level of the bulk slag attained a steady state value of between 1 and 9% after about 10 minutes, depending on the gas injection rate. Because of the high reactivity of hydrogen, bulk supply of hydrogen to the slag was the rate limiting step at the flow rates used and it is believed that the gas-slag reactions in the system were at equilibrium. A partially/stabilized zirconia cell with a Ni/NiO reference electrode was immersed in the slags during the experiments and the steady/state oxygen potentials of the slags were measured. By using the experimental oxygen potential values and calculated values of the steady state concentrations of zinc in the offgas, the activity of ZnO in the slags was calculated from the Gibbs's free energy change for the reaction:

In the mining industry, drilling accuracy has a significant effect on the economy of operations. In this paper, results from the Nkana Division of the former Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines are presented. For the stope investigated, it was found that the extra operational costs alone were 462% of the planned costs! Clearly, there is more than good reason to pay attention to drilling of good quality holes.

"INTRODUCTION On February 1, 1962, after five years of exploration and research, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation announced that they would develop the Adams Mine. Plant construction began immediately and in December of 1964 the first shipment of pellets arrived at J & L's blast furnaces in Pittsburgh. J & L continued to operate the property through its wholly owned subsidiary, Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd., until August of 1971 when it was sold to Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited of Hamilton. Dofasco engaged Cliffs of Canada, a subsidiary of Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, to manage the operation of the property.SUMMARY:The Adams Mine is a one million tons per year iron ore pellet operation located in the Boston Township Iron Range, approximately seven miles southeast of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. The property includes 5,300 acres in which eight areas suitable for open pit mining have been outlined. It was estimated that the reserves in these out lined areas are sufficient to produce 30 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets.The ore 'consists of fine grained magnetite with alternating layers of chert and is mined by conventional open pit methods. This extremely hard and abrasive ore averages about 20 percent magnetic iron, and has a ratio of concentration of 3. 9 /1. Presently, mining operations are confined to two pits with a third one being developed for operations to begin in 1973.The run-of-mine ore is crushed and ground and then concentrated by magnetic separation and flotation to a concentrate grade of 68 percent magnetic iron. The concentrate is agglomerated by a grate-kiln pelletizing process and shipped by rail to Dofasco's blast furnaces in Hamilton and to Jones & Laughlin's furnaces in Pittsburgh."

At the outset of a discussion on the adaptability of Illinois coals for use in iron and steel production, it is perhaps well to define terms. ?Adaptability? as used in this context, means that a coal can be, adapted to use within a given technological and economic framework. For a coal to be adaptable, to use in the manufacture of metallurgical coke within the present technological and economic framework, it must possess, among other things, at least the following characteristics: 1. The coal must be capable of producing, alone or in combination with other coals, a coke that can meet at least a minimum standard of required performance in the present-day blast furnace. The coke must have sufficient strength, stability, hardness, and freedom from impurities to make it suitable. 2. If the coal in its raw form does not meet these requirements, it must be amenable to beneficiation or upgrading so that the requirements can be met. 3. It must be available in uniform quality and in sufficient quantities to meet the need. 4. Use of the coal must be economically attractive. If its quality is equivalent; to that of the coals with which it must compete, it must be no more expensive than they. If It is better, a premium price may perhaps be demanded. If, in any respect, it is the least bit less suitable, the cost must be lower to offset its disadvantages.

"The addition of fines to rod mill feed has been employed at Inco Metals' Frood-Stobie Mill since 1973. The fines, which act as a ""lubricant"", causes an increase in the pulp fluidity and assists the flow of feed through the rod mill. Fines addition was one of the main factors which led to improved rod mill performance and the elimination of rod mill tangles.This paper outlines the testwork performed in evaluating the addition of fines, and summarizes the beneficial effects on rod mill grinding efficiency, throughput rates, power consumption and noise level. INTRODUCTIONFrood-Stobie Mill is situated within the Frood-Stobie mining complex, on the southern rim of the Sudbury Basin. The Mill commenced operations in November, 1967, and has since processed in excess of sixty-five million tons of ore. Minus 8-inch ore is delivered to the Mill's coarse ore bin by two surface conveyor belts from the Frood and Stobie Mines, while Little Stobie ore is transferred by underground conveyor and hoisted directly into the coarse ore bin a long with additional Stobie Mine ore."

An investigation was carried out by Mintek to investigate the influence of additions of gold to ?Fecraloy?, alloys based on Fe-Cr-Al. The aim was to try and improve the oxidation resistance of the ?Fecraloy? alloys at elevated temperatures over extended periods of time. The ?Fecraloy? alloys are very oxidation resistant alloys already employed in industry as substrates for metallic catalysts in auto-catalyst systems for high performance cars. Since their life and durability is limited by the slow, but steady, oxidation of the substrates, any change in the growth or stability of the oxides could be an improvement.

There have been numerous recorded cases of mine explosions being initiated by falls of roof. The actual mechanism of the ignition has often been unknown. One possibility is incendive frictional sparking, particularly when the falling rock contains quartz. Another possibility that has received little attention is the increase in temperature of the air due to adiabatic compression under the falling roof. This paper analyses that possibility and concludes that falls which are extensive in plan area but not necessarily of great thickness of falling rock can, indeed, produce temperatures in excess of those required for the ignition of coal dust or methane.

My topic, "The Administration of Mineral Rights'.' is possibly an unusual one, as it deals with a subject upon which many of us have a more than passing interest, I thought ?it might prove consistent with the objects of this meeting, more especially as I propose to deal, not with those broad subjects of nation-wide importance which are often the subject'? of learned (and sometimes futile) academic discussion, but rather with problems in their practical light. To the scientist, the important question is What is it? to the technician, Can it be utilized? to the business-man, Will it pay? All three questions are important, and so quick has been the march of business on the heels of science? that the one question follows the other with astonishing rapidity and all three must be considered in the modern management of a mineral estate. A .good illustration of the force of this can be found in the recent advance of our knowledge of the element helium in which we have advanced from a solution of the first question to the last question in the short period of 55 years. It is to be borne in mind, however, that in the administration of mineral rights, the question "Will it pay?:' is of primary importance. What forms a mineral estate ? A former practice in western Canada in selling lands was to sell the hair with the hide. All transactions sold the lands in fee simple, which included all mines, minerals and rights and privileges whatsoever, excluding only the royal metals, gold and silver, which by imputation, though not by specific reference, in deeds. of title are reserved to the Crown. At that time the country was in the first ?stages of settlement and the value of our mineral resources was hardly appreciated and little understood.

This monograph presents a unified theory of adsorption and desorption of aurocyanide on activated carbon. This theory has proved useful for CIP/CIL carbon adsorption and Zadra and AARL elution process and equipment design; in accounting for the effects of various water qualities and process temperatures; and in the development of reagents to improve these processes. The theory presented is based on rigorous fundamentals : Classical Eyring theory links initial first order kinetics with Langmuir isotherm equilibria, and this isotherm is demonstrated for the first time to be a consequence of the activated complex postulate of Eyring theory. Simple extension to Freundlich conditions at high solution tenors is possible, but not presented. Supporting entropy data determined by the author includes practically all the pioneering CIP plants built in South Africa and Australia in the early 1980s.

This paper investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were performed on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours and 100 per cent, 97.4 per cent, and 99.9 per cent respectively after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while nickel concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, nickel adsorbs at approximately the same rate as that of the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and experiments suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing.
