This paper reports the finding of a comprehensive investigation carried out to evaluate the compaction characteristics of saturated sandstone aquifers in the Collie Coal Basin under conditions anticipated during dewatering operations. A triaxial technique has been adapted to evaluate the compaction characteristics of the sandstone aquifer in the Collie Basin. This technique, which allows the strata stress regime to be reproduced by triaxial loading with zero lateral strain, also provides a precise evaluation of lateral stresses and consequently Poisson's ratio under in situ conditions. The paper contains a description of the equipment commissioned, test techniques, results, analysis and interpretation of the data obtained. The testing evaluation techniques are general in nature and can be applied to field situations in locations where similar weak sandstones occur.

A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. The first of a series on the evaluation of rock cutting tools, this paper discusses the results of full-scale laboratory drilling tests that compare the performances of several polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) coring bits. The tests were performed in welded tuff as part of a site characterization program. Number of cutters, size of cutters, air course design, and other parameters were evaluated as they affect penetration rate, but this paper focuses mainly on the relationships of torque vs. thrust (weight-on-bit), specific energy vs. penetration rate, and thrust vs. penetration rate. These relationships change in diagnostic ways according to bit type, bit condition, and type of welded tuff.

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rock,1,2,3 metal,4,5 and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. A number of papers have been published on these subject, 7,8,9 some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'.7 Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making holes, only conventional drilling fluids have been considered. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (1 ½ in. ) and full-scale bits (6 ½ -9 5/8 in. ) . In view of the application of jets in deep holes, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids.

This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

The modern mechanical excavation machines have enough power for cutting hard rock. The ‘bottle neck’ which limits the use of machines for hard rock excavation is ‘cutting tool’. To cut hard and abrasive rock, CSIRO has been developing Super Material Abrasive Resistant Tools (SMART*CUT). SMART*CUT technology replaces the tungsten carbide (WC) tip of conventional pick with thermally stable diamond composite (TSDC) and attaches the TSDC tip to steel tool body with CSIRO worldwide patented bonding technology. This paper introduces the key features of SMART*CUT, compares its performance with conventional WC tipped tools, discusses the challenges faced by SMART*CUT and the further developments needed for successful application of SMART*CUT to mining industries.

Railway cuttings require the highest care in design and construction, as the pro- bability of failure concept does not allow any risks to be taken with hundreds of lives being dependent on continued stability. The usual geological influences on stability such as bedding dip and faulting are often discus- sed, but other major problems may come from the presence of sheet joints, cross joints differential weathering and seasonal or daily changes of ground water level. The design of rail cuttings has taken little note of the problems imposed by cons- truction methods, and low cost quarrying methods may seriously weaken a designed shape. The presence of berms and drainage ditches is often difficult to achieve as blasting imposes cumulative stresses and jointing on rocks. Contractors face difficulties in bidding extensive rock cuttings as variations in rock properties are often concealed and overshoot- ing the toe of a batter can easily occur. Modern blasting methods offer some solutions, but the best guide to safe successful cuttings is extensive investigation and the continued involvement of engineering geology at the stages of feasibility, design, construction and maintenance. Two case histories show the influence of folding, faulting and construction methods in the case of slope failure and slope stability.

This paper outlines the concepts used to correlate rock failure with microseismic events and presents examples of microseismic monitoring together with associated computer modelling of the rock failure. This study is motivated by the need to develop improved ways to reduce ground control hazards in underground mining. Toward this end we present and compare results from numerical modelling and micro- seismic monitoring studies conducted at several different mine sites. Emphasis is on integrating results obtained with these tools to characterize, and thus increase our understanding of, important mine deformation processes. The ultimate goal is to use this knowledge to design mine structures, and develop mitigation measures, that minimize specific ground control hazards.

The Mount Isa silver-lead-,zinc deposit possesses a number of features which sets it apart from usual occurrences of ores containing those metals. The deposit has been described in vario:us papers, but development upon deeper levels during the past two years has, yielded much information not hitherto published. Purpose of the present paper is to furnish a unified and coherent perspective by tracing briefly the full rock deformational and mineralization processes responsible for the ore deposition. The paper represents the outcome of ten years' organized geological effort at Mount Isa. Information contained in it supersedes that previously published.A bibliography of published articles relating to Mount Isa ore deposition is appended. In preparing the present paper previously published data have been drawn upon freely wherever applicable. The authors are especially indebted to the papers by Grondijs and Schouten, and by O'Malley and McGhie, which present results of systematic microscope studies of thin and polished sections from comprehensive suites of Mount Isa ore.

Rock reinforcement of rock anchors and rock bolts are commonly used for the support of large rock caverns. The rocks at the location of most large underground openings are usually under very high initial stresses prior to excavation. Hence, the stress redistribution caused by excavation will induce considerable rebound deformations of rocks surrounding the caverns. Since the pressures exerted by the reinforcement are generally far below the initial rock stresses, the reinforcement will be stretched along with the rock deformations, and the stresses in the reinforcement increase accordingly. It is not uncommon for the stress in the reinforcement to reach the yield strength, and in some cases the reinforcement may even have failed. Therefore, the increase of stresses caused by the rebound deformations of rocks should be taken into account in addition to the force required to stabilize the caverns. It was found that the measured stress increases of the prestressed tendons after installation were in good agreement with those computed based on the measured rock deformations between surface and the anchoring point of the reinforcement. The rebound rock deformations and the stress increases in the reinforcement can be estimated based on the results of the finite element analysis and experiences in previous field measurements incorporated with considerations of the geologic conditions, rock properties, rock reinforcement and construction procedures.

Modern tunnel boring machines are subject to excessive cutter wear and bearing failures when used in hard and abrasive rock. In very hard rock, the high cost of cutter and bearing replacement, combined with slower excavation progress, make it more economical to drive tunnels by conventional drill and blast methods. The use of high pressure water jets to break rock provides a promising alternative. Experimental data indicate that the specific energy (the energy expended per unit volume of rock broken) decreases as the water jet pressure increases. Continuous jets are generally limited to pressures below 100,000 psi, whereas pulsed jets from a water cannon can attain much higher pressures. Therefore, the Federal Railroad Administration of the U. S. Department of Transportation has sponsored the design (Ref. 1 & 2) and the fabrication and testing (Ref. 3 & 4) of a water cannon to determine its effectiveness in rock disintegration at very high pressures. This paper reports the results of laboratory tests with pulsed jets against large rock samples at pressures of 125,000 to 650,000 psi and field tests against dolomitic limestone and granitic gneiss at pressures near 450,000 psi. Although initial tests were made with a small nozzle, operating at off-design conditions (Ref. 4), this paper only covers results with the full-size nozzle, including 55 laboratory test shots and 67 field test shots.

More economical methods of rock disintegration are needed for mining and for rapid excavation. Two major systems are drill and blast and mechanical excavation, including tunnel-boring machines. Current drill and blast methods are cyclic and there- fore limited in speed of operation. Boring machines are limited to moderately hard rock due to bearing and cutter wear. The recent development of ANFO, which has reduced blasting costs markedly, was largely fortuitous because of the method of manufacturing AN prills. New slurries and fluid explosives are easy to load and have high energy-pressure characteristics.

ALTHOUGH some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861, Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheaval,1 yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fissuring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have followed them on the name lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the oil-bearing strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered.

THOSE of us who have been following rock drilling work for the last 15 or 20 years can recall some of the problems that were encountered with the old piston type of rock drill and the solid steel which it used. There was frequent trouble in keeping a straight hole in badly broken ground when using the ordinary four- point bit that had a flare on the wings of about 14". The drill steel, when pounding down its hole, would follow the line of least resistance and draw away from the desired line when it encountered a weak side in the ground through which it was drilling. Some would overcome the difficulty by making long winged bits to prevent the steel crowding over; this would relieve the troubles to a great extent. There was trouble with the rifling of drill holes and inability to drill round holes in some ground. The cure for these ills was to use the "X" bit, rather than the crossbit. The "2" bits were brought out in an effort to make it easier to drill a round hole in bad ground. Most of these troubles were before the days when the mechanical drill sharpener was in as common use as it is today. It was not until the introduction of the Leyner type of rock drill, requiring hollow steel that the users of rock drills found themselves confronted with more difficult prob- lems than they had ever encountered before with drill steel because the steel had to stand more severe service.

The interaction between rock and drill bit during drilling has been modeled for many years, but a complete understanding of the phenomena occurring has yet to materialize. Successful models will allow the prediction of rate of penetration in a given environment and optimal selection of drill bit and drilling parameters, thus minimizing exploration costs. In most rock-drilling models the value of the unconfined compressive strength of the rock (UCS) is used in the predictive equations, within the concept of specific energy, and the value of UCS is the percentage of the value of the stress applied on the drilling bit in order for the bit to advance. While the exact percentage depends on the model used and it is not known with certainty, good knowledge of UCS is nevertheless required before any decent prediction can be made on rate of penetration. Determination of UCS, normally done via destructive testing, requires not only the availability of sound rock core samples but also expensive testing and significant time for the test, which frequently are not available for routine drillability predictions. Hence, a multitude of methods and techniques has been proposed for estimating UCS from various indirect and/or non-destructive measurements, or combination of measurements with neural networks, such as point load index, block punch index, unit weight, and apparent porosity, water absorption by weight, sonic velocity, and Schmidt hardness. The many proposed approaches are critically reviewed and the results are compared, and what becomes apparent is that after many years, not only in mining but also in oil-well drilling, accurate indirect determination of UCS is still an elusive goal. An equation to predict UCS from sonic velocity data is suggested based on several data sets reported in the literature. Use of the specific energy equation with UCS or sonic data and utilization of drilling data allows an estimation of the efficiency of energy transfer from the bit to the rock and of the friction coefficient. Analysis of data reported in the literature, both from laboratory and field studies, has shown that this approach is sound and enables the determination of energy transfer efficiencies and friction coefficients, which for the cases studied range between 15 and 30% and 0.15 and 0.30 respectively. Thus, the suggested data analysis approach allows drillers to focus on inefficiencies and optimize drilling practices in future campaigns. This paper presents some of the results obtained during the research work about the use of technologies and digital transformation in the process of rock drilling in open pit mines. The use of automation presents itself as a disruptive factor and a driver of improvements that provide sustainability in rock drilling. Seven main operational parameters were utilized to combine measurement while the drilling (MWD) with other information generated by the equipment during hole drilling, in six different lithologies in an iron mine, located in the central region of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Adjustments and corrections were made to the data collected in order to minimize external influences other than the rock itself, to ensure the effectiveness of the analyses. Finally, we sought to compare the performance of the drilling process in manual and automatic operation modes. Thus, making it possible to show the efficiency and impact on the sustainability of rock drilling operations in open pit mines.

This paper presents analytical assessments around unintended misfire detonation, within rock debris drilling and bench top cleaning, primarily in the quarrying and mining industry. The main purpose of the work has been to see which operation has the lowest fatal accident probability. To be able to do this a risk analysis model is developed and the basics of the model are described first in the paper. Further a practical approach of the model use is presented. This includes a summary of general fatal injury statistical data, which is used to establish input parameters in the model. The result of the work shows that the rock debris drilling operation has at least half the probability of fatal injury compared to bench top cleaning. The result of the work should bring along rewriting of the Norwegian explosives regulation. The statistical data also shows that the blasting industry generally has a high fatal injury rate compared to other industries and basic risk reference levels. Risk reduction efforts concerning the examined operations are described.

Summary Considerable test work has been done with the detachable type of carbide bit. In general, these bits improved drilling operations, but at a bit cost .greater than was compensated for by the reduction in man-hours of labour. Too few bits continued in service for the possible drilling life of the carbide inserts, and technical improvements or lowered first cost, preferably .both, are indicated ?in order that the bits can be generally acceptable as an economical drilling tool. In ?preliminary test work, the drill rods .with ?one insert of the chisel-bit type appear to be more trouble-free, to have a longer life, and to give a somewhat lower bit cost per foot drilled, than other types. INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to outline briefly the 'methods used and the results obtained in test work with tungsten carbide bits used in combination with the smaller bore, lighter weight rock drills. As various articles have appeared in the past few years giving the historical background ?and early development of carbide ?bits, this information will not be repeated. Table I lists the equipment used in the test work. The stopers weigh about 95 pounds and the jackhammers with airleg from 97 to 110pounds. The smaller rock drills are stated to deliver about 2,200 blows per minute at 1 to 30 rotation and to require 85 to 95 cubic feet of air at around 100 pounds pressure.

Aid mine operators as well as mine inspectors in making quick but sufficiently accurate measurements of the rock dust content of coal/rock dust mixtures. The Problem Past research has shown that accumulations of volatile coal dust in underground coal mines can be rendered non-explosive by dilution with chemically inert rock dust (usually limestone). Consequently, rock dusting is required by law in U.S. underground coal mines. However, mine officials and inspectors have no quick and reliable means to determine whether enough rock dust has been applied to achieve a mixture that is in compliance with the law. Even the compliance tests used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are slow and involved. MSHA assures that a mine has been rock dusted adequately by collecting samples from rock dusted areas of the mine and sending the samples to a laboratory for analyses of the inert-dust content. The analyses may not be completed for more than two weeks, during which time the mine in question might be inadequately protected against coal dust explosions. To solve this problem, the Bureau of Mines devised a quick, simple and reliable device that can immediately determine the rock-dust content of a mixture of coal and rock dust.
