Introduction This article describes ways to maximize employment potential for those looking for a job in the minerals industry. Advice on the right way to prepare a resume is followed by tips on where and how to look for a job and ways to make the best of an interview. Information on current salaries is also included. RESUME NAME: Give home and college addresses and telephone numbers, ADDRESS: if still in school. Otherwise, give home address and TELEPHONE: telephone plus business telephone number. JOB OBJECTIVE: What do you want to do? EDUCATION: List degree(s), name of college(s), location(s), and date(s) degree(s) received or to be awarded. Do not list your high school but do include postgraduate education, training, or seminars. WORK EXPERIENCE: List your most recent experience first, and the rest in reverse chronological order. Include dates (month and year) and company names. First show the entire time spent with each employer, then list the various jobs (with dates and duties) you may have had with this employer. MILITARY SERVICE: List dates, branch of service, and duties. If you did not serve, delete this section. COLLEGE ACTIVITIES: Show organizations, sports, and offices held. Only list these if you are a graduating senior, otherwise delete this section. PERSONAL DATA: List age, marital status, height, weight (optional), foreign languages spoken, professional memberships, and health (if good or excellent, otherwise do not mention it in the resume). If you prefer a certain location and would not accept a job anywhere else, list the location desired. Otherwise, do not restrict yourself. Also list special skills, hobbies, or interests that will help sell you to the company. Be brief in this section and use good judgement as to what you say. REFERENCES: Furnished on request. Resume Guidelines There are some things to remember when preparing a resume. These include: • Limit your resume to one page, unless you have a lot of experience. Then it should be a maximum of two pages. • Use 8.5 x 11 plain bond paper, white or off-white. Stay away from colored paper, odd size paper, and cute resumes. They are counter-productive. • Make certain your resume is typed professionally. Be sure to check for spelling, grammar, and typographical errors. • Have your resume reproduced by copier or printing shop. Do not use carbon copies. • Keep your sentences and remarks short and punchy. Use action verbs. • Have a good layout that is easy to read, brief, and uncluttered. Allow some white space in your resume. There are also some things you should not do when preparing a resume. These include the following: • Do not include a photograph or mention your religion, race, or sex. • Do not leave gaps of time unaccounted for in your resume. • Do not include your college transcripts with your resume or list all the courses you took in college. • Do not list all the articles you have written. Only list one or two, if appropriate for, say, a research and development job. • Do not include reference letters with your resume. Any good, prospective employer will make telephone reference checks. • Do not use "Curriculum Vitae," use "Resume." • Do not include unnecessary data such as your social security number, passport number, or PE registration number. If you are a PE or EIT, be sure to mention that in your resume. Do not mention US citizenship or US work permit unless you have a foreign education or are not a native US citizen. • Do not include present salary or salary requirements. This will come out in the interview. • Do not use the word "I" in your resume or refer to yourself in the third person. • Do not lie, distort, exaggerate, or editorialize in your resume. • Do not have your resume prepared by an outside resume service. This is unnecessary, costly, and generally not effective.

El presente texto señala la paragénesis y zoneamiento en el yacimiento de Morococha. Dicho distrito está ubicado al este de Lima, cuyos principales productos minerales son el zinc, cobre, plata y plomo. Para dicho estudio geológico se empleó los valores de ensayos para el cobre, plata y zinc principalmente; en algunos casos, los valores para el plomo; de las vetas estudiadas. En el estudio de la paragénesis no se ha hecho un estudio completo al microscopio de la secuencia de los minerales de la veta. Se han aprovechado únicamente, las mejores exposiciones en el subsuelo que ofrecen evidencias excelentes para deducir las características principales de la paragénesis.

El presente texto señala la paragénesis y mineralización del distrito de Morococha. Dicho distrito está situado al Este de Lima, en el Perú central y sus principales productos minerales son el cobre, zinc, plomo, plata. Su mineralización está relacionada con el intrusivo del mismo nombre, encontrándose el centro más efectivo de la mineralización en el stock San Francisco, mientras que la paragénesis observada en las estructuras estudiadas es compatible con el zoneamiento existente; ya que las primeras capas depositadas son de cuarzo y pirita, siguiendo la esfalerita, enargita, calcopirita, tetrahedrita, esfalerita y galena; rellenando las cavidades se encuentran los carbonatos.

El presente texto revisa la geografía e hidrografía del Perú. El territorio peruano forma parte de dos sectores fundamentales del continente sudamericano: los Andes y las Llanuras Bajas del Oriente. Asimismo, nuestra geografía se divide en tres zonas, una occidental, otra media y otra oriental, denominándolas respectivamente: Costa, Sierra y Selva. Las llanuras y colinas de ambos lados, el del Océano Pacífico y el de Amazonía, pertenecen a la "Costa" y "Montaña" respectivamente, en las que se encuentran las partes inferiores de las zonas andinas. Dentro del sistema de los Andes tenemos : Los Andes del Titicaca y de las mesetas volcánicas, los Andes del Apurímac, los Andes del Alto Marañón, Los Andes del Chamaya. En el sector Occidental tenemos la cuenca de Titicaca y Cordilleras orientales y el Nudo de Vilcanota. De otro lado, dentro de las condiciones orográficas e hidrográficas se divide la Costa en cinco partes: de Arica a Pisco, Pisco a Trujillo, Trujillo a la Punta Pariñas, la Punta Pariñas a Tumbes y de Tumbes a Zarumilla.

La presente investigación revela aspectos sobre los métodos geoquímicos aplicados a la exploración de depósitos minerales, como las aplicaciones prácticas e indicaciones sobre de las diversas técnicas empleadas en el campo y y laboratorio. La exploración química de los depósitos minerales como método de prospección, comprende la investigación e interpretación de anomalías químicas relacionadas a la mineralización dentro de varias sustancias naturales como rocas, aguas y vegetación para así localizar depósitos minerales ocultos. La naturaleza de estas anomalías se divide en dos grupos: las anomalías primarias formadas durante el periodo de mineralización y las secundarias, formadas por la destrucción y dispersión del depósito metalífero durante el ciclo de intemperismo y erosión. Sin embargo, existen algunas anomalías de naturaleza "residual" o "vestigial", las cuales son descubiertas mediante el muestreo sistemático de rocas o de los suelos que de ellas derivan. A esto se suma, la dispersión de elementos en solución puede dar origen a muchas variedades de anomalías secundarias que tienen importancia en la exploración geoquímica como las dispersiones secundarias en las aguas de fuentes, pozos y aguas corrientes, en las cajas de cuerpos mineralizados; en coberturas de carácter no residual sobre y cerca de depósitos mineralizados y aquellas dispersiones secundarias en vegetales. Paralelamente a esta exploración geoquímica, tenemos otras métodos comom los técnicas colorimétricas, basadas en reactivos que indican cambios de color y los de análisis espectográfico, que complementan paulatinamente dicho proceso minerológico.

En 1961, el Banco Minero, la Sociedad de Minería y la Dirección de Minería, deciden efectuar un estudio de factibilidad de la instalación de una refinería de zinc en el país. En este sentido, el objeto del texto describe la evaluación de dicho planeamiento comprendido en tres procesos: El proceso electrolítico, overtpel y el imperial smelting. Asimismo, el trabajo refiere estudios adicionales como la ubicación, los recursos concentrados de zinc, abastecimiento de agua, mercado mundial de zinc y el mercado nacional de fertilizantes fosfatados. Para la realización de los análisis, se han incluido programas de producción y costos de operación. Finalmente, la valorización de la producción y de los concentrados se han efectuado según las cotizaciones promedio de los años 1958- 1962 de la Bolsa de Metales de Londres.

One of the most dangerous jobs in mining is that of resupporting the roof after a fall has occurred. The resulting cavity may be more than 30 feet high, with relatively unstable sides and roof. It is often impossible to proceed with rehabilitation without exposing men and equipment to unsupported rock. Temporary supports provide margin- ally effective protection because of the lack of available footing. Furthermore, the usual supports in rehabilitated fall locations are not permanent, require frequent maintenance, and fail to eliminate some remaining serious safety hazards. This is typically the case for high cavities where loose rock drops from considerable heights from between roof bolts. Supports made of cribbing, beams and additional cribbing to the high points of the fall in many cases do not provide good protection due to the deterioration and shrinkage of timber. In mines, high cribbing frequently loses contact with the roof and thus provides no protection against rocks peeling off the sides. This is true in spite of the fact that at time of installation the cribbing was wedged tightly to the roof. Therefore, when considering the difficulties which occur with current practices, the objective is to find alternate methods of resupporting the high roof after a fall.

O crescente aumento da produção do setor moveleiro tem fortemente contribuído para a economia do país. No entanto, o setor gera grande quantidade de resíduos sólidos. Este trabalho visa avaliar o resíduo em pó de MDF, com o intuito de identificar a melhor forma de valorização do mesmo. Para isso, realizou-se um diagnóstico ambiental de uma fábrica de móveis de pequeno porte, e procedeu-se a caracterização do resíduo de MDF na forma de pó. O diagnóstico ambiental identificou que o resíduo na forma de pó está presente em todas as etapas do processo. As etapas de maiores impactos ambientais são a de corte e acabamento/polimento, já que nestas ocorre a maior geração de resíduo sólido, bem como consumo de energia e geração de material particulado. A caracterização da amostra identificou o material com algumas limitações para aplicações em processos industriais, mas que podem ser atenuadas com algum tipo de beneficiamento, podendo o mesmo ser utilizado como carga de reforço em matriz polimérica.

"The paper deals with the arrangement of structural members for a retaining structure used as a berth in the port of Krishnapatnam. The height of retention is 24.3m. A T-shaped diaphragm wall acts as the retaining surface. A relieving platform has been provided at the top to ease lateral earth pressure on the wall. The diaphragm wall is tied back to a combination of vertical and raker pile. Later, this arrangement was altered to replace the relieving platform with just lowering of ground level below the berth. The tie back was changed to a classical A-frame anchorage. At certain reaches, installation of piles pointing towards the rear was obstructed by a conveyor structure. The anchorage was then changed to include a vertical pile and a pile that points towards the front of the berth. Change in position of inclined pile alters the force in the pile from compression to tension.GeneralPort is a major link in the multimodal transport chain. Berth is the heart of the Port infrastructure. It is here the ocean freight changes to land transport. The change-over, warrants special type of heavy duty handling equipment. The equipment and the process necessitate deep seated foundations. On one side of the berth, deep drafted ships would be berthed. But adjacent to this heavy duty cranes would be operating at the deck level. Berths are of various types. Some are founded on piles and may project into water. Some operators prefer a retaining structure. At the port of Krishnapatnam, a retaining structure was preferred. Dredged level at the berth was to be -20. Deck of the berth was at +4.3. This meant that the height of retention of soil was 24.3m. Ports are generally located near the coast. Subsoil in the port area generally consists of cohesive material of low shearing strength. The berth has to cater to imposed vertical and horizontal loads.Structural functionFor bulk cargo and containers, berth has to support the two crane tracks. These tracks will carry heavy wheel loads of the crane. Besides, the space between the tracks would be used for stacking of cargo or hatch covers. In short, the deck will be subjected to heavy surcharge. This vertical load will manifest as additional lateral force on the retaining wall. Since the height of soil to be retained is high, it is a practice to relieve the lateral earth pressure due to the heavy surcharge of the wall. This is done by providing a relieving platform. The surcharge of superimposed load on the deck and the self-weight of the soil up to a few metres below would be relieved by a suitable platform. This vertical load would be transferred directly to deeper levels through piles. Mooring pull is a horizontal force exerted by the vessel on the bollards towards water side. Berthing force is exerted by the vessel during berthing, through fenders and acts towards land side.Diaphragm walls are usually employed as the retaining face. If the height of retention is less, these walls can cantilever out but in the case of large retention, they have to be tied back. The ties are to be anchored on to suitable arrangements like a dead-man or an A-frame. Berthing structure in the early stages at Krishnapatnam port is shown in fig 1."

Concourse B at the Anchorage, Alaska International Airport is currently being renovated while retaining the original building structure and foundations. Part of the renovation includes the installation of a new, permanent baggage tunnel system beneath the existing building. Installation of this cast in place concrete tunnel, beneath the existing structure, required installation of a steel retaining wall to support footing loads above the base of the excavation. Construction of this retaining wall presented challenging and unconventional design and construction methods. Detailed discussions of the design and construction techniques utilized for this project are outlined.

With over 700 large electric-drive haulage trucks operating in Canadian mining today and over 3700 in mines worldwide, most aspects of electric drive are well known. Recently, however, extensive application of these trucks to down-hill hauling in mountain mining makes it vitally important that many of us better understand the operation and proper application of the dynamic retarding feature of these vehicles. This paper is an attempt to clear up misunderstandings on this subject, to suggest precautions that mining operators should take in comparing competitive retarding systems and to challenge equipment manufacturers to evolve improvements to the important aspect of system performance.

The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. What follows are highlights of some of the RETC presentations.

The 2003 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the New Orleans Marriott, New Orleans, LA, June 15-18. The New Orleans conference was the 16th since the RETC was formed in 1971. This year’s conference was sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.(SME), with co-sponsorship of the Construction Institute of ASCE. Attendance at the meeting was 1,178, a conference record. This was up significantly from the771 attendees at the 2001 meeting in San Diego, CA. The RETC was formed to “advance the engineering and scientific knowledge of rapid underground excavation and tunneling through interdisciplinary meetings, publications, technical-educational exhibitions and encouragement of research.” The RETC conferences are now held every other year. They provide an opportunity for individuals to meet with designers, contractors and manufacturers associated with the tunneling industry to share experiences in all phases of tunnel design and construction.
