Operation improvement efforts at Hyuga Smelting Co., Ltd. have focused on calcining capacity in the reduction rotary kilns ("the kilns"), whose limited feed rate capacity had capped production at around 18,000t-NiN since 1995. To improve the kilns' feed rate capacity of 80 wet t/hr, attempts were made to increase the gas flow in the kilns by increasing the capacity of the off-gas fans. However, as the increased gas flow resulted in only limited improvement of the kilns' feed rate, a scoop feeder was installed on each kiln to add coal to the middle of each kiln's interior to gain a higher efficiency of thermal supply and conversion. With these gas flow and coal charge addition operations, the kilns' feed rate capacity increased up to 120 wet t/hr, with burner fuel efficiency increasing by approx. 10% (approx. 5% in total with the additional coal included). La Colorada Mine was begun in 1993 as a small heap leach mine and was the first operation for Eldorado Gold Corporation. 'This paper describes the growth of the mine to annual production levels near 60,000 ounces of gold and highlights recent improvements that were made to maintain a profitable operation by efficiency gains and cost containment programs.

Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd. was founded in 1968 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018. In 1972, we started producing copper cathode with a production capacity of 84 KTPY. Since the company founding, we have undertaken seven expansion projects, and our current copper-cathode production capacity is 290 KTPY. To increase our production efficiency, two tank houses were converted from Conventional process to ISA process in 2006 and 2014. In another investment, we equipped a continuous glue dosing system, which allowed for strict additive-concentration control, yielded quality improvements and reduced the power-consumption rate. Along with an increase in the production of copper cathode, the amount of impurities eluted from the anode increases. To solve this problem, the chelate-resin purification process that was introduced in 1983 was renovated, and impurities could be recovered more efficiently. In this paper, we report various improvements that have been implemented at the refinery since 2000. INTRODUCTION Tamano Smelter and Refinery of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd., founded in 1968, celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding in 2018. The Tamano Smelter opened its No. 1 tankhouse in 1972, and began operating No. 2 tankhouse in 1984. Thereafter, with continuous production increases and technical improvements, electrolytic copper production was increased from 84 KTPY to 290 KTPY as shown in Figure 1. Table 1 shows the major operating facilities and operation data in 2017.In this paper, details of equipment introduced to continuously dissolve and add glue, various improvements made to the chelate resin process, enhancements made to the crude Ni sulfate process, and another vibrating screen introduced to the copper slime processing flow in accordance with the expansion of copper production capacity since 2000 are reported.

The Tamano smelter and refinery has expanded its production from 228kt/y to 260kt/y since 2006. It was not a big jump, but efficient and economical improvements were executed. These were not only de-bottlenecking and modernization of the smelting plant, including the acid plant, but also additional processes were commissioned, e.g. slag cleaning furnace and steam dryer. On the other hand, a conversion to permanent cathode process in the #2 tank house made the biggest impact on production efficiency for the refinery plant. In order to overcome the drastic change of copper business, although each scale is not so big, continuous improvements are very important to survive. This paper mainly describes the recent improvements of the smelting plant.

Tamano Smelter started its operation in January, 1972 adopting FSFE ( Flash Smelting Furnace with Furnace Electrodes ) type smelting furnace at a production capacity of 101,00Ot/y of anode copper and 285,00Ot/y of sulfuric acid. Since then, it had experienced several production expansion program, it had twice as production capacity as start. 196,000t/y of anode copper and 436.000t/y of sulfuric acid. This time, we have completed the plan for increasing production capacity up to 226,000t/y of anode copper and 510,000t/y of sulfuric acid, by the oxygen enriched operation. We carried out several improvements and modifications, changing of cooling system ill FSFE, enlargement of converter and anode furnace, and some progresses in sulfuric acid plant and environmental facilities.

The furnace was commissioned in 1973 and produces a high-grade sulphide matte containing nickel, copper and cobalt, which is shipped to refineries in Zimbabwe and Norway for further processing. This paper outlines the recent process improvements and plant expansions that have resulted in a capacity increase from 40 000 to 60 000 tons per annum of metal production.

Introduction The papers that follow deal with recently completed major improvements in practices at the Sullivan operations in Kimberley. The papers have been prepared by members of the Consolidated Engineering Staff and outline the construction programme which has been in progress for the past three years, entailing an expenditure of some millions of dollars. Four major operational changes have been brought about in the mine and concentrator. They are: (1) A change in backfill procedure for filling stopes below the 3900 level. (2) A 12,000-ton,per-day sink-float plant at the concentrator. (3) A new haulage system from the mine to the concentrator. (4) A completely new crushing plant and ore storage facilities located underground. A brief outline of the background and history leading up to this overall project will be given to show how each started as an independent betterment and how they were finally co-ordinated into one major programme. The first of these, namely, the necessity for backfilling stopes below the 3900 level, was the most pressing problem. All filling to date bad been done above the 3900 level, where mining was carried on in an irregular pattern of open stoping. Stopes below the 3900 level were first opened in 1940 and are being worked on a regular pattern of panel sub-level open diamond drill stopes. The two areas are separated by a sill pillar traversing the entire length of the vein at the 3900 level elevation.

Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd. started its operation adopting the Flash Smelting Furnace with Furnace Electrodes (FSFE). Thereafter, it developed a coke combustion technology based on C() concentration control, which made possible a low cost and high productivity operation without using electrodes. However, increase of treated concentrates and upgrading of matte grade for production expansion started to cause difficulties in operation control with then existing operation control system. THE members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing ; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization-better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process ; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck-a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory tory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to "let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Now, thirty, and sometimes forty heats are regularly made during the twenty-four hours, day after day, without the frequent occurrence and without the fear of breakdowns or "messes," as the spilling of steel charges was graphically named in Sheffield. 2d. THE prospector's pan was the first implement used for saving gold, and its action is so effective that it has never been equalled for thorough work. Copper plates, blankets, sluices, and amalgamators of several patented designs have thrust it aside, but in spite of all the advances made there is no dispute among experienced men as to the comparative thoroughness of the work done by it and its rivals. When its rivals are doing their best, the pan can take their discarded refuse and prove their inefficiency by producing from it not only gold, but even the mercury which has been lost from the machines themselves. The trouble with the pan has always been that it was only a tool. Man was the machine that moved it. His work was high-priced, the quantity treated small, and it was impossible to use the pan for any but the richest sands. As a consequence the best gold-saving appliance known has been discarded for years and replaced by machines of inferior excellence, but which could more than make up for their limited ability in saving gold by their capacity for treating great quantities of ore. Mr. Peck is one of the old-time amalgamators of the Comstock district, and the first idea of the new machine came to him as he used to pan below the tailrace of his mill. No matter how fine the work of the mill was, the pan invariably proved that better could be done. The tailings always contained gold, silver, and mercury. This state of things is just as true to-day, after all the improvements that have been made, as it was then, and the much-vaunted method of the " Washoe process" consists in extracting 72 per cent. of the gold and silver by one operation, and then repeating this operation half a dozen times to get out about one-third of the remainder. With all the advances of twenty years in milling, there is nothing more crude in metallurgy than the treatment of tailings in many of the large mills of the West.

THE use of diamonds upon a large scale in drilling rocks, and the substitution to a certain degree of rotary diamond drills for the ordinary steel percussion drills, marks a new era in the art of mining. Since the invention by Leschot of the diamond drill, it has steadily advanced in its utility and range of application, and in the appreciation of miners and engineers. It must be claimed as one of the many gifts of science to the arts ; and it is, in particular, one of the fruits of the scientific education given at the Ecole Centrale, at Paris. Members are all, doubtless, more or less familiar with the construction of the drill and of the machinery by which it is applied in boring. It is, therefore, my present purpose only to direct your attention to some recent marked improvements, made by the American Diamond Drill Company, by which the economy and efficiency of the machines have been increased. Form of Bit. The annular or ring form of the drill-head or bit was, I believe, the earliest; and it is still in use, without essential modification, wherever it is desired to obtain a sample "core" or specimen of the rock traversed. But for mere drilling, regardless of the preservation of a test-core, a solid-head bit is preferred, except for very large holes. Until recently, these solid-head bits were made with a pointed cutting face shaped like an obtuse cone. A great deal of effort has been expended on how to optimize conventional water cooling circuits in furnace cooling elements, and the results have been largely satisfactory. However, there is a general agreement that the proximity of high-pressure water passages to the flow of molten furnace products is a safety concern. Nonetheless there exists little alternative to the formula: increasing furnace integrity implies the incorporation of more extensive forced-convection water cooling systems. Recent developments in evaporative cooling technology have resulted in the development of a high-capacity heat pipe capable of operating under the thermally intense environments of a metallurgical furnace. The system functions using several kg of a working fluid (water) in total, has no moving parts, and allows for a significant reduction in cooling water requirements. Full-scale pilot tests of a copper tap hole and slag launder were done in 2003 and2005, with detailed results given in this paper.

Milling has traditionally been considered more art than science. In the last 10 years, significant improvements in process equipment have been made and we are finally taking significant steps toward approaching grinding as a science. Two machines have been at the center of this development. These are the roll press and the high efficiency separator. The former can be considered as a new technology or adaptation of existing i.e. roller mill. The latter is clearly an improvement of existing technology. Other machines have been introduced to a lesser degree and later. Among these are the CKP and Horomill. The purpose of this paper is to provide an over- view of the currently available modifications for operating systems and options for new milling circuits with some comments on their application and history.

"In January of 1964, a group known as the Canadian Gold Metallurgists was formed with the backing of the managers of most Canadian gold mining operations. This organization is composed of about thirty mill superintendents of Canadian gold milling operations where the cyanidation process is in use, and one member from the staff of the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Re-sources, Ottawa. The aim of this group is to bring together gold mill operators, and research and development people from both industry and government for the purpose of discus-sing common metallurgical problems, and deciding on what operational R and D efforts can be made to help solve these problems. Since the conception of this organization, this approach taken by the gold industry to the study of metallurgical problems has resulted in benefits to all operators, both by assisting them with problems peculiar to their own individual operations and by providing developments of general interest to the industry.This paper describes events leading up to the formation of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists, and how the group has operated since its formation. Examples of progress made toward the group's objectives are given, and possible future programs are discussed."

"The Williams Mine, Canada's largest gold mine, processes over 6,000 t/d of ore utilizing SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining to produce gold dare bullion.Grinding accounts for over 50% of milling costs with grinding media, power and mill liners making up over 75% of grinding costs. Since 1991, several changes in these areas have been made which have significantly reduced costs, while fineness of grind and mill recovery have both been increased.This paper discusses the changes made in the grinding circuit over the past few years and assesses their impact on operating costs and mill operations.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is located in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, about 40 km east of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operation Corporation, which is equally owned by Teck Corp. and Homestake Canada Inc. Canada's largest gold mine, the Williams Mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a rate of 3, 000 t/d. Mill throughputs have typically exceeded design, averaging 3, 397 t/d in 1986, and 3,380 t/d in 1987. In August 1988, production was increased to 6,000 t/d. Throughput averaged 4,212 t/d in 1988. Production increased over the next few years averaging 5,477 t/d in 1989, 6,248 t/d in 1990, 5,987 t/d in 1991, and 6,283 t/d in 1992. With a recovery of over 95.5%, production for the first three quarters in 1993 is averaging 6,408 t/d.GeologyThe main ore body is a steeply dipping conformable zone of microcline-quartz-muscovite rock. It occupies the contact zone between hanging wall metasedimentary rocks and foot wall felsic quartz feldspar porpyritic rocks of possible volcanic or subvolcanic intrusive origin. The ore body is enveloped by muscovite schists which are thickest on the footwall side. The schist is enriched with tourmaline, pyrite, and green mica containing vanadium and barium. The ore body contains pyrite and barite which occurs mostly in laminae and bands to veinlets and breccia fillings. The gold occurs as free (native) grains, 20 to 30 µm in size at grain junctions of the microcline and quartz. Visible gold is rare in the main zone. There are commonly two or more discernable layers of economic value which are separated by weakly gold mineralized material which usually consists of muscovite schist, barite rich zones or sulphide poor-microcline-quartz rock and in the upper and western fringes by biotite rich schist with feldspathic fragmental characteristics. Molybdenite is a common constituent as very fine disseminated grains in the microcline-quartz rock and is most prominent with gold enrichment. Stibnite and realgar are two of the more common accessory sulphides."

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

Introduction The circumstances under which the gold mining industry was forced to curtail operations a few years ago are well known to all. The effect of those circumstances is particularly noticeable when one enters some of the larger mills that were designed, in better times, to treat relatively large tonnages. On their grinding floors one will observe that a number of grinding units are lying idle, and the ravages of rust are everywhere in evidence. The same applies to other equipment throughout these mills. In 1941, we found it necessary to reduce tonnage considerably in the Wright-Hargreaves mill. With the assumption that a lower tonnage would be of long duration, we began to focus our attention on some of the idle equipment with a view to re-arrangement of the flow-sheet for greater economy of operation. In an article by the writer published in the Engineering and Mining Journal (March, April, and May issues, 1939) , it was pointed out that in designing this mill there was a very limited floor space available. The choice of thickening equipment was imposed solely by the necessity for space: conservation. Thickening by gravity would have required 5,000 square feet of floor space, whereas Genter thickeners required only 1,200 square feet. As a consequence, the Genters were chosen. The decision to add flotation to the circuit was made primarily to save space. On a cost-plus-tail basis, 80 to 100 hours agitation on all pulp would produce similar overall results, but would require much more space.

OUT of the depths of each business cycle we emerge with a stimulus for greater efficiency and a realization of progress in industrial technique. The recent years have not been an exception to this rule, and in retrospect we sense that significant advances have been made in mining practices on the Mesabi Range, with emphasis on speed of production and economy of operation. A survey of such changes does not reveal anything that is fundamentally or basically new, but it is apparent that ideas and machines that have found wide application in industry elsewhere, with necessary modifications, are being put to productive use in mining iron ore. Inno-vations in transporting and conveying ore from the open pits stand out with greatest prominence, so that, in the main, it will be with these fea-tures that this paper will treat, in the review of progress made to this date. The late years have witnessed the development of small deposits for open-pit operation, the cleaning up of pits nearing exhaustion, and in two large operations the approach to the limit for haulage by steam locomotives, owing to grades, making it necessary to recover the ore in slopes, track benches and below the power-shovel limit by a milling and scram operation. For several years small standard-type dump trucks have been used in clean-up or scram operations within the pits, but during the season of 1936 the first effort. was made to use heavy truck haulage in the trans-portation of stripping and iron ore. The new units in use today vary from 15 to 20 tons in capacity, and are equipped with powerful gasoline or Diesel engines and supplemented by trailers or wagons on rubber or crawler treads. The Diesel engine finds favor with most operators because of fuel economy. These units develop upward of 125 hp. in the 15-ton trucks. The speed of these trucks varies from 2 miles per hour in low gear to 35 in high gear. The transmission affords 12 speeds forward and 3 speeds in reverse.

To gain some idea of the progress recently made in the measurement of high temperatures, we must review the temperature-measuring devices of the past. As far back as 1782, Wedgewood, a famous potter in England, attempted to measure his, kiln temperatures by means of clay trials, or test pieces, that indicated the expansion or contraction that occurred with certain changes in temperature. He also produced cones off clay, formed of various mixes, to form a whole series for the range of temperature met with, in firing clay products. These cones are still extensively used to measure kiln temperatures in the pottery industry. Cones are affected not only by time but by temperature and the rate, of firing, consequently, they are not an accurate measure of temperature. In addition it has been common practice for years to attempt to measure temperatures with fusible salts. Capsules of these are inserted in the furnace and indicate, by melting; when a certain temperature, has been attained. While' such salts cannot be considered a precision form of temperature-measuring device, they have proved reasonably accurate in checking temperature.
