Design of yielding chain pillars in deep coal longwall mines is not as well established due mainly to the lack of knowledge in the behavior of coal pillars in the post-peak regime. This study shows that two of the existing strain-softening models have the potential to provide an improved understanding of yielding and, therefore, could form a rational basis for yielding coal pillar design. Analytic and numerical modelings of a row of chain pillars in a two-entry development at a depth of nearly 700 m suggests that yielding pillars are feasible, but the design is very sensitive to the coal’s post-peak behavior.

Rational design of layouts for longwall operations is greatly facilitated by use of an accurate and economical method for predicting stresses and displacements. The displacement discontinuity method (a form of boundary element method) is based on replacing actual excavation geometries by thin slits of the same plan area. This approach allows three-dimensional stress- analysis at a fraction of the cost of alternative methods. The analyses can be readily performed on economical microcomputers, putting the analysis capability within the reach of mine-site personnel. This paper describes investigations associated with the German Creek Central Colliery, the first longwall operation in Queensland's Bowen Basin. The material properties used in the model, in particular the rock mass and goaf properties, have been 'tuned' to fit stress measurements obtained during extraction of the first and second longwall panels at the mine. The study shows that model predictions based on suitably scaled anisotropic rock strata properties are in good agreement with the stress measurements made to date. This model predicts average chain pillar loads significantly higher than predicted by models based on United Kingdom conditions. A working chain pillar design method is proposed using average pillar loads predicted by the numerical model and ultimate strength characteristics given by Bieniawski's formula.

Risk Management has been applied relatively slowly in the mining industry. Except for the risk concept application in financial considerations, the application of Risk Management in safety management has been far from satisfactory. When applied it was treated in a global occupational safety and health sense. Regardless of how much the mining industry has progressed over the years it is still, in many respects, `state-of-the-art' business. The safety aspects of mining are well known and yet little understood by the public. Regardless of what has been achieved so far and how much effort has been put into it, mining is regarded as an unsafe and somehow rude business. Safety records of the mining industry vary from State-to-State. Latest mining related disasters in PNG and Queensland and some other fatal accidents support this public perception. They purport a need for change in managing safety in the mining industry. The latest mining fatalities have raised the issue: What must be done to improve safety standards? Duty of care, risk management and system engineering concepts can provide some answers. Risk Management principles which have been advocated for some time provide many answers and explanations and can make safety management more constructive and workable. What has been missing so far is that this concept has neither been applied nor has been modified for its practical application and purpose on a larger scale. A risk management approach to the management of safety and health in the mining industry is addressed, herein. This approach does not attempt to provide the solution. It does, however, provide a basic understanding of what Risk and Risk Management are all about. Rational management of risk is addressed in the life cycle and system contexts. A system of continuous improvement is applied. There is always a chain of events, outcome, exposure, consequence(s), and consequence(s) value(s). It means that development of an event takes place in time and space. Dynamic circumstances have been created in or within the system. It is a decision-making process designed to provide a methodology which is directed not toward a mathematical model but toward easy use and application in dynamic working environment, by decision-makers who can be anybody from either a risk taker or a risk creator. The emphasis is placed not only on arriving at the best practical, possible and fair decision but also on structured and systematic acquisition of knowledge about the system, its hazards and associated risks, hence increasing the decision maker's ability to manage the decision-making process related to the management of risk.

In order to find an empirical relation between a quantity F and (m) independent variables or factors, each of which take (n) different values or levels, it is necessary to conduct nm different experiments (all possible combinations of the factors), each of which has to be repeated a few times (usually five) due to the scattering of the data. The total number of such experiments is very large, thus for example, when m = 4 and n = 5, it is equal to 5.54 = 3125; and very rarely is it possible to conduct such a number of experiments. Various possible methods of planning partial experiments are illustrated in Fig. 1. Each method shows a large combinative square consisting of five columns and five rows of middle squares, each of which, in turn, is further divided into five columns and five rows of cells. Such a partition corresponds to a plan of an experiment with four factors, each of which takes five different levels. The blackened cells indicate the combination of factors in a partial experiment. The total number of experiments is reduced on the basis of the following considerations: a) The effect of only a few levels of some factors is studied (Fig. la). Such an investigation gives no information on the effect of some factors, therefore it cannot be accepted as satisfactory; b) By reducing the number of levels of each factor; in such a case it is not possible to obtain an empirical relationship, but only whether some factors have an effect. "The phased application of statistical process control (SPC) infers that processes are classifiable as pre-SPC (or phase zero), phase I and phase II processes, with different objectives being pursued in the different phases. Phase zero processes, defined as processes affected by assignable causes of variation, are characterised as follows: out-of-control with unknown autocorrelation structure having an unknown statistical distribution not performing consistently on target with minimum variability potentially incapable of conforming to the product specifications. The objectives of phase I SPC is to obtain estimates of the mean (µ), variance (s2), probability density function (f(X)) and the autocorrelation structure, as well as transforming the process into a phase II process (defined as a process conforming to specifications and performing on target with minimum variability). As in any other type of research or pragmatic improvement intervention, sampling is required is to achieve these objectives. The challenge of deciding a phase I sampling plan is multifarious since it has to cope with the aforementioned effects of assignable causes and provide for rigour estimates of the unknown parameters. Furthermore, deciding sampling plans in phase I invariably presents a classical catch-22 situation: appropriate sampling is required to determine the autocorrelation structure of a variable, but knowledge of the autocorrelation structure is required to formulate an appropriate sampling plan. This paper suggests, for random variables, guidelines to formulate sampling plans, and presents a methodology to estimate the inherent process parameters of process variables and an approach to identify assignable causes in phase I. CITATION:Breytenbach, W P, 2014. Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

The Raub Gold Mines are situated approximately in the centre of the Malayan Peninsula in the State of Penang. Part of the area, now known as "Raubhole," was opencut some 800 years ago by the Mon Khmers, a Cambodian people, whose vestiges mark numerous outcrops in South Eastern Asia. With their decline and extinction the work was abondoned, leaving a large pond in a dense thicket of Beluka (secondary growth).From the year 1885 onwards the history of Raubhole and the water therein records a chain sale starting from an enterprising local "Rajah," who had "assumed" authority, to an equally wakeful Singapore Arab; thence through the agency of a "down-and-out" beachcomber to a hopeful Australian company in the "goldbrick" days. Subsequent catastrophe on a depleted stringer was followed by reconstruction; the deserved reward of a long mining life, and an output of nearly 800,000 ounces of gold. Owing to the loss of notes and data stored in Singapore, this paper is not as complete as it should be, especially in respect to its metallurgical phases. Apologies are therefore tendered in advance for any deficiencies which may be noted.The necessary regional geological data have been taken largely from the admirable investigation of the Raub area by J. A. Richardson, A.R.C.S., B.Sc., F.G.S., of the Malayan Geological Survey*, and, throughout the paper, months represent lunar periods of 28 days and money is expressed in sterling.MINING SECTIONSAs shown hereunder the reef system has been divided by nature into seven isolated sections, which have been of necessity worked as seven separate small mines. From north to south these are:-(a) Sungei Agas consisting of very shallow workings to the south of, and adjacent to, a granite-porphyry mass known as Bukit (hill) Kajang. El presente trabajo plantea dos alternativas para afrontar la crisis minera que se desarrolla en la mina Raura del Perú. La primera, estriba en mantener el ritmo de producción e incrementar la ley de cabeza. Mientras que la segunda, refiere el cierre total de la minería convencional para enfocarse a la franja mesomática tipo skarn de la sección Catuva, utilizando métodos altamente mecanizados que incrementan la producción paulatinamente. En este sentido, se optó por la segunda alternativa puesto que el potencial minero en Raura proyecta a mayores niveles de producción y las reservas actuales se corresponden con la amortización de la deuda. Asi también se describe las características geológicas y locales del distrito minera de Raura, producción histórica, potencial minero, reservas económicas y se analiza los métodos de minado de tajo abierto y mina subterránea como los resultados de dicha valuación económica.

The Ravensthorpe Nickel Project (RNP) flow sheet provides for the upgrading of Ni & Co in a size based beneficiation process prior to leaching. The upgrading effect on Ni and Co makes the beneticiation process a powerful addition to the flow sheet. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis based on 351 individual batch tests, 52 large scale composites and 21 pilot plant tests has been used to successfully model beneticiation product grade, recovery, upgrade and mass recovery. Statistically, 83% and 96% of the variability in nickel recovery and nickel product grade respectively was accounted for. Algorithms have been developed for Ni, Co, Mg, Al and Fe, which represents the revenue and operating cost factors for the process. The algorithms have subsequently been applied to the resource model, allowing prediction of elemental grade and recovery for the development of the mine schedules based upon these parameters and not head grades alone. The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

The decade of the 1980's saw "advanced materials" become a key factor among the industrialized nations, with the United States, Japan, and the European Economic Community being the major competitors. All three have identified communications technology, advanced materials, and biotechnology as the keys to future industrial leadership and the closing decade of the 20th Century is expected to be an era of rapid development and restructuring. The progress of EC'92, the effort to develop uniform standards and remove trade barriers in Europe; the determination of Japan to commercialize advanced structural ceramics, alloys, composites, and superconductors; and the emergence of less developed countries as major supplies of commodity materials pose enormous challenges to the position of the United States as an industrial and financial leader. A consensus is developing that the industries that are first to commercialize the large array of new structural materials and electronic, optical, and magnetic materials and devices will be those who determine the structure of national and world economics. Many technical, economic, legal, political, social, and cultural factors are important determinants in the race to commercialize new materials. Millions of words have been written about these factors and their interdependence; yet the sheer complexity of the problems, the rate at which changes are taking place, and the economic risks involved are so great that government policy makers and industrial decision makers find adequate understanding to be very difficult. Of the many factors involved in advanced materials, the Bureau of Mines has the statutory responsibility to provide information on where materials can be found and how they are mined, extracted, purified, combined, and recycled. It is obvious that minerals availability is essential to implementation of any new technology just as there can be no commodity metals industry if the ores are not available. Because "minerals availability" for commercialization of advanced materials and devices is more complex than for commodity materials and a new mix of materials and processes is emerging, the Information and Analysis Directorate of the Bureau of Mines is redirecting resources to provide reliable information for policy and decision making. The Office of Advanced Materials Coordination (OAMC) was established as a staff operation in July 1987 to assist the efforts of the divisions and branches. The key issues and problems were defined and the role of the Bureau was outlined (Sorrell, 1987, 1988). In February 1990, the functions of OAMC were transferred to the new Branch of Advanced Materials, a line organization parallel with the Branches of Ferrous, Nonferrous, and Industrial Minerals, and was given the responsibility for developing new methods to acquire, analyze, and disseminate information about new materials. The purpose of this paper is to provide definitions, a summary of major issues and problems, an overview of minerals and processing availability problems, and a perspective of the ways in which the mining and materials industries can help to ensure domestic availability of raw and processed materials.

RAW bituminous coal has been in general use as a blast-furnace fuel in Scotland for the last century, and although its use has now been largely abandoned and it has been replaced by coke in the majority of the few furnaces which are at, present in blast in this country, coal-smelted pig iron is not yet a thing of the past; it is still being produced and mar-keted in competition with the more cheaply smelted product of the coke-fired furnace. Various factors have influenced this change in practice; the once plentiful deposits of coal of a suitable nature for the blast furnace are now not so easily obtainable; native blackband and clayband ironstones which are easily smelted in the coal-fired blast furnace, although still far from being exhausted, are not available except at a. cost that is somewhat higher than that of imported ores, making them unattractive to the ironmaster that is compelled by circumstances to smelt his iron at the lowest possible cost. Within the last 15 years overproduction of synthetic nitrogen has led to progressive reductions in the price of sulphate of ammonia, the recovery of which together with the other by-products before that time materially assisted in reducing the working costs of the coal-fired furnace. Now the sale of the by-products recovered yields a diminished profit. When the cost of the product is the only consideration the small, slow-smelting, coal-fired blast furnace cannot compare with its large, modern, coke-fired competitor. Other `considerations do not by any means all support the same side of the argument. In the smelting of pig iron to be used in the manufacture of steel where the quality of the final product depends so largely upon the control of the conversion process and so much less upon the physical quality of the pig iron used, the physical properties of the pig iron do not exert any appreciable influence upon the quality of the steel produced, therefore the methods employed in the smelting of the pig iron matter but little so long as the requisite chemical composi-tion is reached. PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic location or seam characteristics modem raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Underground preparation involves choosing those portions of the bed which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving (1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another the (1) petrography of the coal in the bed does not re- main uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content and petrography are of considerable interest and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal. The prospecting and evaluation of any area containing one or more salable coal beds by means of channel samples taken from outcrop openings and/or from diamond-drill cores can yield valuable data on coal characteristics. By correlating the data developed from distinct petrographic sections of channel and/or drill core samples, the quality of the bed according to stratification will be evident. Lithium raw materials usable with present technology consist of pegmatite ore and surficial evaporite brine. Those advantageously located now supply world markets. Materials of similar grades and magnitude, but less favorably located, will come into production as present sources are depleted and markets expand. Some of these potential supplies have been explored, and are reserves in the sense of known availability and quality. Reserves herein are of two classes, those proved by close drilling and assaying, and those of only probable status because their scale and grade are unsystematically indicated. Possible resources include similar materials whose bulk can only be inferred on indirect evidence. All figures apply to total materials in the ground. No allowance is made for losses in mining, evaporation, beneficiation, or chemical processing.

Lithium raw materials usable with present technology consist of pegmatite ore and shallow evaporite brine. Deposits of these materials occur in many parts of the world. Those advantageously located supply the present lithium industry. Less favorably located deposits will come into production as markets expand and present sources are depleted. In this discussion, materials listed as reserves include fully explored and partly explored deposits. For those closely drilled and assayed, the data provide measurements rather than estimates, and such reserve tonnages are "proved." For deposits partly explored, the data support reserve estimates of "probable" tonnages. Materials lacking exploratory data are classed as resources, and their "possible" tonnages are inferred mostly from indirect evidence and are essentially objectives for exploration. All figures for pegmatite ore apply to total materials in the ground.

"In a technologically advanced era, where process control is accurately maintained within the smallest error margins, and accuracy and precision are continuously improved, sampling is still left to the lowest paid employee in the company without training him or her properly to understand the relevance and importance of the task. In this paper the objectives of sampling in a process control environment is discussed and an attempt is made to link it to the theory of sampling. Some of the practical problems associated with implementing theoretical sampling principles in an industrial environment will be elucidated and some examples given on how compromises are made. Different methods of sampling will be discussed with real life examples from different manufacturing industries."

California's annual production of >11 million tons of cement, at a value of over $640 million, comes from eight companies, which operate 11 plants. Cement is California's second most important mineral commodity, representing 25% of its total annual mineral production. Although most of the cement produced is consumed within the state, current export locales include the Pacific Northwest, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. An enumeration of the components required to produce cement is deceptively simple: calcium oxide (65%), silica (20%), alumina (4-5%), iron (3-4%), and calcium sulfate (4%) as a retardant admixture. The last, and most expensive, ingredient in cement manufacture is energy. Detrimental materials in cement mixes include excess .magnesium, alkalis, heavy metals, sulfur, and other volatiles. Each of the 11 cement plants in California requires a unique chemical solution of combined raw materials to produce a uniform product: portland cement. The geologist proposing solutions for the additive raw materials in cement manufacture must have a thorough knowledge of a particular cement plant's needs. In the California cement market, keeping the costs of additive raw materials down is one way to also stay competitive, and using a combination of natural and waste materials as additive raw materials allows cement producers to stay competitive.

This paper demonstrates experimental studies on bioprocessing of different waste streams. In Part I of this paper three tailings from mining industry were bioleached with mixed acidophilic culture in order to solubilize valuable metals, like copper, nickel, zinc and manganese to leaching liquor. Bioleaching resulted in > 70 %, > 85 %, 100 % and > 70 % leaching yields for Cu, Ni, Zn and Mn, respectively. However, contaminants like arsenic and chromium were not leached efficiently and they will cause challenges in residual solids and sometimes also in metal recovery from leaching liquor. Bioleaching resulted in 99 % leaching yield for copper. Part II demonstrates mine water treatment and also gold recovery from process liquids with biosorption method. The novelty of biosorption was finding that certain fungal species were able to be cultivated to self-immobilized systems, which are easier to operate than traditional suspended biomass methods. Biosorption resulted in more than 90 % removal for all contaminants, but was also seen to be gold selective.
