The current status of metal hydride alloys for NiMH batteries was systematically reviewed. Extensive application-oriented research and development has successfully made the NiMH battery an important part, with growing potential, among rechargeable batteries. The rare earth based metal hydrides (AB5) have been considered the best alloy material for use in the negative electrode in NiMH batteries. However, being in demand for high performance electronic markets, the still young NiMH industry is facing serious technical challenges in developing better products. Among all the efforts to respond to the challenges, advanced AF3, alloys are in great demand: the capacity enhancement race requires new or improved alloys possessing higher volumetric capacity; price competition mandates MH materials with low cost; high performance under severe service environments calls for alloys with high corrosion resistance when subjected to electrochemical cycling; and finally, high power service requires the negative electrode to deliver current at high rates.

"The year 2011 witnessed a major surge in rare earth prices as China, supplier of +95% of the world’s rare earths, reduced export quotas and increased export taxes and duties. In response, companies around the world are scrambling for alternative sources. In Canada too, there is a race to be the “first” rare earth producer. Something that is not generally realized is that Canada has a long history of rare earth production and was a major supplier from the early 1960’s to 1990. At one stage, Canada was said to be supplying more than one third of the world’s yttrium and probably supplied even more than that. Five decades ago, thorium was a key element in many non-nuclear applications and Canada became a major supplier of thorium from the late 1950’s to 1968, first as a by-product of uranium and then as a co-product of rare earths. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s original rare earth and thorium production facilities, which were located in the Elliot Lake uranium camp in Northern Ontario. The uses of these elements, geology, mineralogy, markets of the time, and processing are all discussed. Some of the lessons learned from these pioneering operations might be useful in today’s race to develop the next generation of rare earth production plants.INTRODUCTION The rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960’s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray tube in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths. The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950’s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950’s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths. Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available for thorium and the rare earths but unquestionably Elliot Lake production made a significant contribution to world production. A thick sequence of alkaline intrusions and volcanic rocks underlies a Quaternary caldera on Liliir Island. The sequence is host to a still active sub-aerial hydrothermal system and associated epithermal gold mineralisation. Sub-horizontal alteration horizons exhibit progressively increasing chondrite norma-lised (La/Lu) en and (La/Sm) cn ratios from unaltered shoshonites, to the potassic alteration zone, to the argillic altera-tion zone to the advanced argillic alte-ration zone. The increasing fractionation of HEE, and especially of LHEE, up the alteration sequence is the result of de-creasing pH, temperature and alkalinity of the hydrothermal fluids with increa-sing alteration intensity. HRE3 were especially mobile in argillic and advanced argillic alteration units characterised by acid fluid conditions and large fluid volumes. Abundant Cl, S and CO2 within the hydrothermal fluids and thus abundant REE complexing agents and large fluid volumes favoured the mobility of REE during hydro-thermal alteration of the volcanic rocks and intrusions. Steam escape, mixing of the gases with groundwater and a change from a magmatic neutral chloride hydro-thermal system to a meteoric acid sulphate system was accompanied by liquid/vapour ratio changes, pronounced alkalinity, pH and temperature decreases, and fluid/rock ratio increases. This caused the mobili-sation, fractionation and deposition of PF.F.

"A field study of the coal preparation plant fleet in the eastern United States was undertaken to determine if quantify of rare earth elements (REEs) present in the product streams are large enough to justify further concentration. Representative composite samples were taken from the clean product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse streams from 20 coal preparation plants. Each stream was then separated into various size and density classes and analyzed for ash and REE contents. The large database showed that coarse refuse contained the largest amount of REEs, although the ratio of heavy to light REEs was greater for the clean coal products. The concentration of REEs was also compared to that typically seen in the earth’s crust. This enrichment ratio ranged from approximately 1.5 to more than 4.0 as the ash content varied. The database also showed that a linear correlation existed between La and Ce for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some of the high-value REEs. INTRODUCTION Worldwide energy demand is expected to grow by as much as 37% by 2040 according to the International Energy Agency (2014). This growth, coupled with a decrease of the reliance on coal to generate energy, means that it is more important than ever for countries to secure the materials necessary to meet its energy projections. For the United States, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that total domestic electricity use will increase roughly 25%, from 3,836x109 kWh in 2013 to 4,797x109 kWh in 2040 (EIA, 2015). In the EIA’s reference case, coal’s contribution to electricity generation drops from 39% in 2013 to 34% in 2040. On the other hand, renewables share of electricity generation grows from 13% to 18% for the reference case. Compared to its current state, renewable energy electricity production is predicted to grow as little as 50% to as much as 121% over this time period, depending on the economic case being examined. This growth will largely be seen in the wind and solar sectors (EIA, 2015). The focus on viable renewable energy resources will be crucial to the future of fueling American growth. Many of the renewable energy technologies, such as wind turbines and photovoltaic films, rely on materials and supply chains outside of the United States. The lack of a reliable and low-cost domestic supply could pose a threat to the growth of the renewable energy markets in the United States. This potential vulnerability recently led the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to create a Critical Materials Strategy Report. In this report, 15 elements were identified as critical for the continued growth of the renewable energy market. Eight of these elements were rare earth elements (REEs). Five REEs (dysprosium, neodymium, terbium, yttrium and europium) were identified as highly critical and vulnerable to shortages (Bauer et al., 2012)."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore deposits of rare earth elements (REE) in South-East Asia are classified into four types: carbonatite, allanite, ion-adsorption and placer. Occurrences of the carbonatite deposits are confined almost exclusively to the Red River Fault Zone of northern Vietnam. Since the carbonatites contain dominantly REE fluorocarbonates (eg bastnasite) and lesser amounts of monazite, they are rich in light REE but poor in heavy REE. The ion-adsorption type deposits and prospects were found in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The ion-adsorption ores generally show lower REE grades than those of the carbonatite type and placer deposits; however, they could be enriched in HREE, which are more precious and scarce commodities than LREE. The ores consist of weathered granites with a significant amount of ion-exchangeable REE, which are extracted by using a dilute electrolyte solution. The ion-exchangeable REE are likely to be sourced from REE fluorocarbonates, allanite and titanite because these minerals are relatively susceptible to weathering and release REE3+ ions into soil water. In contrast, monazite and xenotime are resistant to chemical weathering and could form placer ores. Placer monazite and xenotime have been processed as by-products of placer Sn, Zr or Ti in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, although the current production is small.CITATION:Sanematsu, K, 2015. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), rich in mineral resources, shows potential for REE deposits in carbonatites, pegmatites, and placers. This paper reviews global REE resources, highlights potential REE targets in Africa, and emphasizes the need for further research and exploration in the DRC to unlock its REE potential.

Increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) is expected to lead to new development and expansion in industries processing and or recycling REE. For some industrial operators, sending aqueous waste streams to a municipal wastewater treatment plant, or publicly owned treatment works (POTW), may be a cost effective disposal option. However, wastewaters that adversely affect the performance of biological wastewater treatment at the POTW will not be accepted. The objective of our research is to assess the effects of wastewaters that might be generated by new rare earth element (REE) beneficiation or recycling processes on biological wastewater treatment systems. We have been investigating the impact of yttrium and europium on the biological activity of activated sludge collected from an operating municipal wastewater treatment plant. We have also examined the effect of an organic complexant that is commonly used in REE extraction and separations; similar compounds may be a component of newly developed REE recycling processes. Our preliminary results indicate that in the presence of Eu, respiration rates for the activated sludge decrease relative to the no-Eu controls, at Eu concentrations ranging from <10 to 660 µM. Yttrium appears to inhibit respiration as well, although negative impacts have been observed only at the highest Y amendment level tested (660 µM). The organic complexant appears to have a negative impact on activated sludge activity as well, although results are variable. Ultimately the intent of this research is to help REE industries to develop environmentally friendly and economically sustainable beneficiation and recycling processes.

"As a monitor of the processes involved in the formation of granitoid mineral deposits the coherent group behaviour of the rare earth elements (REE) actively reflects changing fluid characteristics. For example, in the porphyry environment, magmatic-hydrothermal fluids produce potassic alteration with strong enrichment in the light rare earth element s (LREE), reflecting their high pH, low fluid/rock ratios, and the dominant role of CI- complexing in metal (i.e. Cu, Au) transport. With increasing fluid/rock ratios and decreasing pH accompanying the progressive involvement of meteoric fluids (and the production of propylitic, argillic, and phyllic alteration) anionic species such as F - and CO, 2- become important in metal (e.g. Mo, W,) transport through complexing, and their activity in the hydro thermal fluids is illustrated by mobilization of the heavy rare earth elements (HREE).The relative involvement of CI- versus F - versus CO32- in metal transport in other granite-related systems can also be monitored through REE behaviour. Hence granitoid tin-tungsten mineralization and associated greisenization typically exhibit heavy rare earth enrichment and evidence the importance of F&apos; and CO32- in metal transport. Similarly, heavy rare earth element enrichment in hydrothermal uranium deposits can be related to the transport of uranium as carbonate complexes. REE are widely accepted as powerful tools in the study of rock petrogenesis, but their use has been neglected in the investigation of mineral deposits. The recognition of the systematic variation of REE distributions in granitoid mineral deposits suggests that the application of REE geo chemistry, particularly when integrated with fluid inclusion and isotope studies, can provide (1) an effective method for identifying the physicochemical controls of metal transport and (2) a useful criterion for elucidating metal distribution."

Some samples from arc-type volcanic suites collected in northern New Zealand and southeastern Papua New Guinea show rare earth element (REE) and Y abundances which are enriched relative to the those typical of their respective associations. This enrichment appears to be the result of an alteration process which selectively mobilises the REE and re-precipitates them as REE-bearing minerals in veins and interstitial patches. The alteration is on a micron scale and is not detected in routine petrographic examination. The spectre of REE mobility in young apparently fresh rocks is important to igneous geochemists who use REE abundances to constrain petrogenetic models and may also be important because it indicates the operation of a natural REE enrichment process which could operate in the formation of economic REE deposits.

Experimental and industrially produced polystyrene and silica resins are tested for recovery capabilities of Rare Earth Elements (REE). Testing regimes being used are typical of resin analysis. Inductively Coupled Plasma-AES results indicate that preferential separation and recovery is possible in the adjusted pH range of2 to 10, solution conditions, and resin type. Testing conditions are resulting in structure modification of the composite resin as indicated by X-Ray Diffraction, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Mercury Porisometry, and density analysis. Resin modification indicates both surface and internal structure alteration outside of reported standard behavior of resins. Structural changes have ramification for both Rare Earth Recovery RER and traditional resin operations. Analysis shows that the resin uptake of REE can be manipulated for concentration. Further analysis with SEM work indicates that widespread surface and interior modification is taking place as resins load with REE. This modification is leading to pore rupture and particle breakage. Further investigation is being performed to determine the mode of breakage.

In Australia, current production of rare earth element (REE) minerals, monazite and xenotime, occurs as by-product from titanium-enriched placers and beach sands. Undeveloped REE resources are associated with carbonatites, alkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, phosphorites, cemented fluvial sandstones, and uranium mineralisations. The REE are held within a range of minerals including silicates, phosphates, a1uminophosphates, carbonates, and oxides. The development of these REE resources may require new processing and extraction methods. The distribution of REE in the currently mined ore minerals, monazite and bastnaesite, does not match that requested by the market. Exploration for new REE resources should be focused on ores with more marketable REE distributions, particularly with heavy REE, neodymium, samarium, europium and yttrium enrichments. Such ores occur within alkaline igneous rocks, in laterites overlying carbonatites and alkaline igneous rocks, and in placers derived from low-grade regional and contact metamorphic sediments. Lateritic REE deposits may be easily and economically mined by shovel in open pits and are unlikely to require extensive crushing and milling. In addition, lateritic REE clay deposits may be processed by simple hydrometallurgicaltreatment mehtods.

Rare earth element (REE)-and gold-bearing breccia pipes are a potentially significant economic target in the Pea Ridge iron ore mine, Washington County, Missouri. The Pea Ridge deposit is one of eight known volcanic-hosted iron ore deposits in the Middle Proterozoic St. Francois terrane, which are similar to the Olympic Dam-type deposits of Australia. The iron orebody is steeply dipping, tabular-shaped, and cuts across the host rhyolite. The footwall of the deposit is zoned from the massive apatite-bearing magnetite core outward to heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, specular hematite zone, to an extensive silicified zone. The hanging wall is zoned from the massive magnetite core outward to a heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, and an amphibole skarn zone. The REE-rich breccia pipes cut through the various lithologies along the footwall at or near contacts. They are typically 60 m long, 15 m wide, and extend at least 120 m vertically. The pipes are comprised of fragments of rhyolite host rock, massive magnetite zone, specular hematite zone, and silicified zone rocks supported in a matrix of rock flour, barite, feldspar, monazite, apatite, chlorite, xenotime, and, locally, gold. Total REE oxide content of samples of the ground mass material, which are not diluted with lithic fragments, average about 20 weight percent. Grades from working faces in the mine are lower and average about 12 weight percent. Gold distribution is erratic, but concentrations are as high as 371 parts per million.

Critical minerals are becoming more important in our technological society because they are used in many of our electronic devices, batteries, and magnets. In New Mexico, low to moderate concentrations of critical minerals are found in Late Cretaceous coal and related strata in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, REE, and Critical Minerals) program. The New Mexico coal, humate, and clinker deposits are relatively low in REE (<325 ppm TREE), Li (<90 ppm), V (<168 ppm), Co (<51 ppm), Ni (<108 ppm), Zr (<557 ppm), and many other critical minerals compared to normal economic deposits. Some of these rocks are enriched in Al2O3 (<40%) and Sr (<3740 ppm), both critical minerals. Common minerals hosting the critical minerals in these rocks include clay minerals, zircon, and rutile/anatase. As the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Ultimately, economic potential will most likely depend upon production of more than one commodity, maybe even from coal, humate, and clinker deposits.

Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

In this study the light sparse phase search (SPL_Lt) mode on the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was successfully used to identify and quantify the abundance of rare earth element (REE) phosphates in Precambrian iron formations. Monazite (light REE phosphate) and xenotime (Y and heavy REE phosphate) are identified and data from the MLA combined with the mineral chemistry of the two minerals are used to calculate and model the expected REE concentration and distribution in these two REE phosphates. The REE phosphates account for up to 31 per cent of the REEs in the banded iron formations (BIFs) and excellent correspondence is observed between the modelled REE patterns and the whole rock geochemical data available for the same samples. Except for quantifying the mineral weights, the sparse phase search also allows for the localisation of REE phosphate grains and the observation of their association with other minerals using backscatter electron (BSE) imaging. These observations are used to conclude that the REE phosphates were most likely of diagenetic origin, with REEs and phosphate remobilised from primary chemical precipitates. It is demonstrated that automated mineralogical techniques can be used to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the influence of a rockÆs trace mineralogy on its geochemistry.

Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

It is crucial to reestablish a domestic rare earths minerals production industry to help secure the Nation&apos;s clean energy future, reduce the U.S. vulnerability to material shortages related to national defense, and to maintain our global technical and economic competitiveness. Given that the Chinese dominance of the rare earths market has adversely impacted supply stability and endangers the United States and its allies&apos; assured access to key materials, rare earths should qualify as materials either strategic or critical to national security. Further, the U.S. government should facilitate the reintroduction of a globally competitive rare earth industry in the U.S. Realization of this objective requires: ? Developing domestic processing capability so that the U.S. is not primarily dependent on China as a source of rare earth ore, and almost exclusively dependent of China for processing of the ores. ? Providing a mechanism where access to Federal lands for rare earth exploration and extraction is possible, and ? Training engineers to design and operate rare earth ore processing facilities

Rare earth elements and critical minerals have recently become of great economic interest because of their necessity for many new technologies and recent geopolitical unrest affecting the supply and import of resources. The San Juan and Raton basins in northern New Mexico are two structural coal basins that contain elevated concentrations of rare earth elements and critical minerals. These two New Mexican coal basins will be assessed geochemically and petrographically to identify vectors of the rare earth element and critical mineral enrichment. Coalbeds, coal seams, overlying, and underlying rock units will be sampled and characterized to determine any economic viability. Historic data will be compiled into a new and comprehensive coal geochemical database, which will grow with new analyses, and serve as the dataset for this project; this coal resource database will be made available to the public.

Concentration and composition of rare earth elements (REE) and major elements in the sediment samples from the IOM H11 Fe-Mn nodule deposit, eastern part of the Clarion-Clipperton nodule field (located between the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone - CCFZ; tropical Pacific), have been studied. We show the controls on REE concentrations and described vertical/horizontal variability of selected metals in pelagic sediments from the CCFZ. According to Kato et al. (2011), who analyzed 2000 seafloor sediment samples at 78 sites of the Pacific Ocean, deep-sea mud shows high concentrations (2230 ppm maximum) of ?REY and could be potential resource of these elements in the future. However, our work does not fully confirm that sediments in the IOM H11 are significantly enriched in REE.

Abandoned uranium mines in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota were sampled for uranium, radium, and rare earth elements during 1992 and 1993. Analyses of water samples from several shallow ponds in the mine pits showed pH values between 3 and 4 with uranium concentrations between 1600 and 2600 ppb. Rare earth elements and their respective isotopes were analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and were referenced to a shale normalization pattern. All samples showed an enrichment in the middle rare earth elements. Rare earth levels often were greater than 0.2 ppm. At one site, the concentrations of lanthanides were 150,000 times above background levels. While the southern Black Hills have long been known for rich uranium ore deposits, these analyses show that significant levels of rare earth elements also are present, indicating that the potential exist for future development.
