Since the last survey of lead smelters in 1987, the lead industry has experienced many changes. Technological innovations, in combination with a dramatic shift in the market structure as well as more stringent government regulations, caused major upheavals in many different areas. Therefore, a new survey was performed to review the progress in the technology of lead recovery over the least decade. The newly conducted survey reflects all current phases of the world's primary lead production, from charge preparation to refined metal shipment. It was prepared by sending questionnaires to individual companies, and the detailed statistical data of this survey are presented. In considering the data developed from the survey, it should be recognized that the primary lead industry is at a crossroad where novel technologies will gradually substitute the sinter machine - blast furnace operation in the new millennium.

The conversion of moisture and ash free (maf) coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor. Two washed Kentucky coal samples (KY # 9 and KY #11) were studied in liquefaction solvents of various donor strength. The liquefaction solvent hydrogen donor strength was varied by changing the tetralin content of a mixed 1 -methylnaphthalene-tetralin mixture. Primary liquefaction conversions in excess of 90 wt% in 10 minutes of reaction time @ 700° K (427OC or 800°F) were achieved with liquefaction solvents of moderate donor strength, i.e. 40% tetralin. Mineral deposits in New Zealand whose origin can be ascribed to primary magmatic segregations are associated with mafic-ultramafic complexes related to two orogenic episodes which took place during Palaeozoic and Mesozoic times. These mafic-ultramafic complexes are essentially of two types. One is ophiolitic and has podiform chromite mineralisation presumably formed below a spreading ridge. The other type occurs as intraplate layered intrusions in which Fe-Cu-Ni sulphides and Fe-Ti-V oxides have formed as a result of liquid immiscibility with the host magma, and have subsequently accumulated by gravity means. Generalised descriptions are given for some deposits in NW Nelson, Fiordland and Marlborough districts.

Pan Australian Mining lid installed a milling and gold leaching plant designed to process 2 million tonnes per annum of breccia sulphide ore. This plant was commissioned in January 1989. Since commissioning, increased ore reserves have been established and the plant has been expanded by the addition of one ball mill and several tanks to increase the design capacity to 3 million tonnes per annum. This additional plant was commissioned in May 1990, bringing the total number of mills up to three, each 4.5 m diameter x 7 m long. The paper details how milling rates have been increased at the expense of grind size to increase the capacity of the original plant from 2 million to 3.1 million tonne per year rate before the additional ball mill was Commissioned.

The Australian Broken Hill Consols Mine, situated some 600 yd east of the main Broken Hill line of lode, is noted for its rich ores of silver. In contrast to the vast conformable orebodies of the Broken Hill field, the Consols lode occupies a narrow fissure dipping to the south west at angles increasing from 240 through to vertical and transgressing the strike of the metamorphosed country rock at an oblique angle. This feature, together with the abundance of calcite and siderite and the virtual absence of silicate minerals in the gangue, has led to its classification as an orebody of the Thackeringa type (King, 1953). Recorded production during the period 1890 to 1903 is given as 845,000 oz of silver and 20 tons of lead.The unusually rich silver values of the Consols lode were concentrated at the intersection of the fissure with beds of amphibolite, whereas in the adjacent schists and gneisses the lode became markedly impoverished. From the surface to a depth of some 120 ft extensive surface oxidation had occurred, resulting in the breakdown of siderite and its replacement by limonite and associated manganese oxides.Silver halides, dyscrasite, acanthite and partly oxidised tetrahedrite were the main silver minerals in this zone. With increasing depth the lode material gradually reverted to minerals representative of the hypogene zone.The only previous work specifically on the mineralogy of the Consols lode is that by Smith (1922), one time manager of the mine. Ore deposits of commercial grade are local concentrations of great rarity when considered in relation to the area of unmineralized land surfaces, and they must therefore be considered as the products of exceptional and complex conditions. The data collected from a great number of individual deposits are sufficient to permit certain broad generalizations in regard to the conditions favorable to ore deposition which even numerous exceptions do not invalidate. The broadest general relation of ore deposits is with intrusive rocks, and while there are notable exceptions, the great majority of ore deposits have a visible or closely inferred connection with intrusive rock masses. Conditions that permit the dissipation of the ore-bearing vehicles do not permit the concentration of metals in deposits; the prime factor to consider in this connection is that structural conditions must be such as tend to concentrate and not to dissipate the ore-bearing solutions. The disadvantage of extrusive rocks is at once apparent; any metals the magma may have contained are dissipated at the surface and are lost; with the exception of tiny vugs and cracks in quickly cooled flows, no concentrations of metals are known in extrusive rocks, and the lack of confinement and quick cooling apparently do not permit extrusives to exert mineralizing effect upon the rocks with which they come in contact. The close mineralogical similarity between extrusives and intrusives, and the great difference in mineralizing power is a proof of the ease with which magmas part with their metallic content, and of the mobility of the ore-bearing vehicles in comparison with the parent magma.

While the dimensions of oreshoots in individual deposits may not be foretold with any degree of accuracy, the occurrence of ore in shoots is not accidental, but is controlled by laws some of which are understood. Any one familiar with permutations and combinations who stops to consider the variety of factors that control ore deposition, and their varying relative importance, will admit that the science of economic geology must advance greatly before the occurrence of oreshoots may be predicted accurately in advance of exploration. The segregation of minerals in any oreshoot must be referred to some condition, or combination of conditions, local to the oreshoot as compared with the remainder of the deposit of low- grade or barren minerals. Among the localizing factors that have been recognized are, in filled fissures, the amount and distribution of open spaces available for ore deposition, and in replacement deposits, the degree of brecciation giving access to the replacing solutions; the intersection of veins with other veins, dikes, sheeted zones, or porous strata; the impounding of solutions by impervious strata; and the differing precipitative influences of enclosing rocks. A large proportion of important and well- defined oreshoots, especially in deposits of deep-seated origin, are not assignable to any of these factors. The industrial types, sources, and quantities of USA tin residues are identified and the methods of treatment reviewed. The effect of a lower tin price, due to a current major world surplus of tin metal, is mentioned and covered in some detail. The names and locations of over 100 USA firms recovering tin residues are listed. Current smelting and refining charges are included to convert the residues into tin metal and alloy. The impact of the suspension of the LME daily tin price since October 24, 1985 to date, and the failure of the International Tin Council to support the Buffer Stock Manager are reported with comments.

Results of a primary stress measurement investigation conducted on the 1100 copper ore body of the Mt. Isa mine, Mt. Isa, Queens., Australia, are presented in this chapter. The investigation started in September 1965, after discussion with the engineering staff at Mt. Isa, and consisted of both underground or in-situ tests at Mt. Isa and laboratory tests on Mt. Isa rocks and stress measurement techniques at the Australian National University in Canberra. Underground stress measurements were made in and adjacent to the 1100 copper ore body. The primary stress measurement site was in J 32 west crosscut on 14 Level. Approximate coordinates on the mine grid are 3000 north, 1650 east. The vertical depth below ground surface at this point is approximately 2180 ft. Some preliminary measurements were made in M 30 west crosscut on 13 Level, coordinates 3000 north, 2000 east, depth beneath the surface approximately 1990 ft. Additional flatjacks were installed on 11 Level in L 30 west crosscut, coordinates 3000 north, 2200 east, and depth beneath the surface approximately 1580 ft. All of the sites were in rock that from a mining engineering viewpoint must be considered extremely sound. The 13 and 14 Level crosscuts were approximately 14 ft on a side and nearly square and the 11 Level crosscut was approximately 10 ft on a side. All of the crosscuts had been standing open for several years and no artificial support of any type was necessary. Extraction openings hundreds of feet on a side have been made in this mine in similar rock and these have remained open also without additional support (see Davies 1 for a recent summary of mining techniques and conditions). Finely dispersed, primary sulphide mineralisation in the Cu-Fe sulphide zones of copper-bearing shale of the Polish part of the Permian Kupferschiefer is mainly present in the form of framboids and spherules. This type of mineralisation is especially well preserved in organic-rich shale, where it often dominates over a later diagenetic mineralisation that consists of large grains and veins. In microscopic observations special attention was paid to composite grains of copper and iron sulphides. The results suggest that the Cu-Fe and Cu sulphides precipitated in the Kupferschiefer sediment before pyritisation of the framboids had ceased and that they replaced metastable precursors of pyrite. The precipitation of copper sulphides could have been delayed owing to the formation of Cu-organic complexes.

The Melbourne City Link project includes two three-lane highway tunnels, 1.6 and 3.4km long, respectively, which are both approximately 16 meters wide and 9 meters high. The tunnels will be excavated through interbedded, moderately to highly jointed siltstones and sandstones of the Silurian Age Melbourne Mudstone formation over the major parts of their lengths. The strength of the intact rock varies from less than 5 MPa to greater than 70 MPa. Based on the available information regarding the performance of large span tunnels in weak rock, it was considered that the commonly applied empirical design guidelines for tunnel support, based on rock mass classification systems, should be augmented by more explicit design methods. The support design was, therefore, validated by analytical procedures, including numerical analyses, which are described in this paper.

Vertical crater retreat mining is being used at Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated, Limited for pillar recovery between previously mined and filled stopes. In order to increase productivity in the older lead lode areas of the mine, particularly in the lower grade sections around the keel of the orebody, score form of longhole stoping was considered necessary.Due to poor ground conditions in the country rock surrounding the ore and the requirement to provide sane wall support during mining, primary VCR mining has been utilised in these areas.At Zinc Corporation, several stopes have thus far been mined by a hybrid longhole stripping - VCR method.

"The use of composite linings, consisting of permanent sprayed primary and secondary linings with a sandwiched spray applied waterproofing membrane is expected to improve efficiency and reduce lining thickness, but it also brings complex primary-secondary lining interaction. This issue is further complicated by the uncertainty regarding the long-term behavior and parameters of the sprayed concrete–sprayed membrane interface.This paper aims to address this issue by presentation of a series of numerical analyses of a typical shallow SCL tunnel in soft ground with a range of design assumptions on the interface behavior: (1) compression only; (2) compression and tension; and (3) compression, tension, and shear.The results demonstrate that the assumed interface behavior has a significant impact on the primary-secondary lining interactions. A design approach of ignoring the tension and shear bond at the interface may not be conservative particularly for serviceability. This paper explains the rationale behind these conclusions and discusses the implications for design.INTRODUCTIONSprayed Concrete Tunnel Lining SystemsSprayed concrete linings (SCL) have been used in conventional tunneling for decades. However, details of SCL systems may differ to a large extent depending on ground conditions and specific tunneling methodologies.In hard rock conditions, for example, drill and blast excavation is typically supported by rock bolts and sprayed concrete (NGI 2014). Such tunnels are usually designed fully drained and the above-mentioned support elements considered permanent without the need for a further inner liner. Therefore, there is no structural interaction between separate lining shells to consider.In conventional tunneling in the European Alps, a double shell lining is typically utilized, consisting of an outer (primary) sprayed concrete lining and an inner (secondary) cast-in-place concrete lining, separated by a waterproofing system. The primary lining normally includes rock bolts and may include other support elements. The waterproofing system is usually based on a plastic membrane and a geotextile fleece. The tunnel may be designed fully or partially drained or fully undrained. Although there are two structural lining shells interacting, investigation of such interaction is generally irrelevant to designers because the primary lining is considered only temporary (fully sacrificial in the long term). An overview of reasons for this assumption is given, for example, by Lemke (2014). The secondary lining is designed to resist all foreseeable loads on the tunnel. The primary lining may, in reality, interact structurally with the secondary lining during the life span of the tunnel. However, since the secondary lining design must cover all possible (extreme) scenarios, investigation of such interaction does not bring any value to the design."

Pursuant to the Federal Surface Mining Act of 1977 and the Illinois Surface Mining Act of 1980, Illinois has adopted revegetation success standard regulations that include the Agricultural Land Productivity Formula. The Formula establishes yield goals and standards to measure the success of meeting yield goals for reclaimed prime farmlands. The formula compares the quality of the pre-mining soils in the permit area and the county, to the crop production achieved on the reclaimed permit area and the county crop yield in a given crop year. The regulations also specify acceptable crops, erosion control requirements and time frames for demonstrating success.

Federal and State surface coal mining regulations require special handling of prime soil materials which result in additional costs, and no actual benefit when prime and non-prime soils are similar. The Coteau Properties Company proposes to mix both prime and non-prime topsoil and subsoils at the Freedom Mine in Mercer County, North Dakota, based on an analysis of soil physical and chemical characteristics which show these materials to be comparable.

The determination of the number of primers necessary to efficiently initiate an explosive column charge is essential to good blasting. If the number of primer is insufficient, the total energy stored in the main charge will not be released. On the other hand, the use of too many primers will be counterproductive and raise the blasting cost. Tests were conducted by the authors to determine the correct priming procedure for a basalt quarry. This paper describes the results of those tests.
