"Deep mixing (DM) method, one of the most commonly used solidification methods, is based on the principle of solidifying soft ground. It can be classified into two categories such as Cement Deep Mixing (CDM) method and Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) method which apply hardening agent in slurry condition and in powdery condition respectively. In recent years, DM methods have undergone changes that have evolved them from the traditional method to meet the needs of the diversifying market. Among them, the Contrivance-Innovation Clay Mixing Consolidation (CI-CMC) method is a DM method which mixes a cement-type hardening agent in slurry condition mechanically with soils in situ and incorporates the innovative technique, “atomized ejection” that has been developed to allow faster installation of larger diameter columns without sacrificing quality compared with conventional methods. At this technique, the atomized hardening agent is discharged together with compressed air through a device incorporated into the mixing blade. It also has advantages of performing the works with low-displacement of the surrounding soils in consideration of environmental friendliness and with higher penetration capability against hard ground.This paper presents the technological outline of the above-mentioned CI-CMC method, focusing on the atomized-ejection technique, followed by some construction examples, applied to the self-earth-retaining wall, to the hard ground and the area adjacent to the existing structures.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the accumulation of its case histories, Deep Mixing method has been receiving the demands of its application to more challenging conditions, such as harder ground condition, and requirement of lower displacement of the surrounding ground during its operation. In addition, to match its price against the other cheaper methods and widely receive its benefit of higher quality, the cost reduction of Deep Mixing is also one of the major challenges. For the cost reduction, higher productivity and lower consumption of the material to obtain the equivalent strength and homogeneity with the conventional method are required.The Contrivance-Innovation Clay Mixing Consolidation (CI-CMC) method has been developed to meet these demands. CI-CMC incorporates the mist ejection that has been developed to achieve faster installation of larger diameter columns without sacrificing quality compared with the existing methods. Normally, we obtain cement columns of about 1.0 m in diameter by using Deep Mixing method. To increase the productivity, it is not preferable to drastically increase the penetration and withdrawal speed of the mixing blades because of the hardness of the ground and restriction by minimum number of passage of rotating blades per a certain height of the soil cement. Instead, the expansion of diameter of the columns will simply increase the productivity. The development of the new mist ejection system, as shown in Photo 1, has enabled the diameter of soil cement columns to 2.0 m on single axis while 1.6 m on double axes. Mist ejection means that the hardening agent slurry is sprayed into the ground in mist form together with compressed air thereby achieving homogeneous mixing and reducing the resistance on rotating blades."

Waterfront flat areas which are very convenient for human activities, however, are often on the alluvial soft ground, where soft cohesive soil with a high moisture content, loose sandy soil, etc. are accumulated in a thick formation, with a high groundwater level.The DJM Method introduced here is used to decrease the moisture content of the soft ground, strengthen the ground and stabilize the soil quality by injecting powdery binder into the ground with compressed air, while mixing the binder with the soil using the mixing blade.2. National Grid needs to maintain a connection between two existing electricity sub-stations (Beddington & Rowdown) in the Croydon (south London) area, and allow the replacement of two 275 kV cable circuits that are buried under roads. This is to be achieved using a single 400 kV cable circuit within a 10 km (6.25 mile) long, 3 m (9.8 ft) diameter high voltage cable tunnel which is being driven through water bearing Chalk, at depths ranging from 5 m (15 ft) to 80 m (262 ft), with four access shafts(12.5 m (41 ft) in diameter) ranging in depth from 10 m (31 ft) to 40 m (131 ft). The Chalk in this area acts as a source of public drinking water supply (PWS) and is protected by areas designated Groundwater Source Protection Zones. To minimise the groundwater risk the design and construction of the cable tunnel and shafts has paid particular attention to the construction materials used, including testing of these construction materials prior to use, developing construction methods (including the design of the Earth Pressure Balance TBM) and maintaining a groundwater monitoring & testing programme prior to and during construction to ensure the integrity of the Chalk aquifer is maintained as a drinking water source. This paper describes the tunnel &shaft design and construction in relation to these particular groundwater environmental issues which set new precedents for tunnel assessment, design and construction requirements in the United Kingdom.

COMMENTING on the report of the latest Royal Commission for India, the September, 1926, issue of the National City Bank's monthly letter states, among other things, that "The decision of the Royal Commission is against the proposal for a gold coinage, but in favor of placing the silver coins and paper currency now redeemable in silver on a gold basis." Also, it quotes the following from the Royal Commission's report: The essence of the proposal * * * * * is that the ordinary medium of circulation in India should remain as at present the currency note and the silver rupee, and that the stability of the currency in terms of gold should be secured by making the currency directly convertible into gold for all purposes, but the gold should not circulate as money. It must not circulate at first, and it need not circulate ever. In this connection it may be stated that during the last one hundred and fifty years or so unsuccessful attempts have been made by the governments of different nations of the world to devise a plan or plans by which gold and silver could be used concurrently for money purposes and, particularly, as standard money; such, for example, as bimetallism, which, of course, is impracticable. But, since none of such plans has been adopted generally it is logical to conclude that their proponents did not shape them so as to conform to the basic principle of standard money, or else political issues were deemed to be dominant, or, perhaps, it was partly due to each.

The power station went into operation in 1931, when the installed capacity was 12,500 kVA. with a loading of 4,000 kVA. In 1936 the loading increased to 6,750 kVA. which necessitated the addition of a third set which went into operation in 1937, the installed capacity at that date being 18,750 kvA. with a loading of 7,000 kVA. This remained fairly constant until 1945, when a gradual increase was noticed, the loading in 1952 being 10,598 kVA.With the addition of the copper plant, additional generating capacity was required and it was decided to raise the installed capacity by the addition of a fourth set to 34,375 kVA. with an expected loading, when producing copper, of 20,000 kViA.MAIN POWER PLANTThis consists of three GiE.e. alternators of 6,250 kVA. or 5,000 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating and one G.E.C. alternator of 15,625 kVA. or 12,500 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating, making a total generating capacity of 34,375 kVA.Each alternator is driven by Fraser and Chalmers turbines at 3,000 r.p.m.SYSTEMThe main 3 phase 3 wire 3,300 volt distribution system has the neutral point of alternators earthed through by one or two earthing resistors designed to limit earth fault current to 3,000 amp. for 20 seconds, in the case of the large machine, and to 1,100 amp. for 10 seconds, in the case of the smaller machines, or full load of either size machine at rated voltage.

Attention is also drawn to the recent privatisation of the electric power and gas industries and the intention of the present Government to follow suit as regards coal mining. The subject of mining law is discussed under the headings: minerals or rights that have been nationalised or are vested in the Crown; ownership (of land and mineral rights); special customs; tracing of owners; right of support (arising from mining); ancillary rights and easements; obtaining prospecting and mining rights; planning permission; statutory aids to obtaining rights; notes on the history, law and practices of petroleum (onshore and offshore), gas, coal, prescribed substances, gold and silver; electricity; safety, health and welfare; and technical information and boreholes. UNDER the name of the Russian Far East we understand the territory occupied by the Amur, Maritime, Sakhalin and Kamchatka Provinces, the total area of which is about 918,000 square miles. The mining industry took its first step in the Russian Far East in the second half of the 19th century, and until the end of this century was restricted to gold placer mining. In the last years of the 19th century, the extraction of coal and lignite was begun, and in 1910-11 the exploitation of silver-lead-zinc mines. The conditions of the Far Eastern mining industry during the last few years may be outlined by the following figures. Annual production of gold mines was about 54,000 lb., valued at $13,000,000. During the period of 1910-15 a considerable increase of placer-gold mining by mechanical processes took place; in 1910, by means of dredging and excavators, 500 lb.. of gold were obtained; in 1914, 2740 pounds. Annual output of coal; lignite and. silver-lead-zinc ores was: 1911 1920 Bituminous and semi-anthracite coal, long tons 270,000 316,000 Lignite, long tons 66,000 205,000 Silver-lead-zinc ores, long tons 28,400 94,500 In other branches of mining in the Far East, only the quarrying of building stone and clay may be men-tioned, the total yearly output amounting to about $500,000 in value. The principal gold mines are in the Amur Province, in the systems of the Zeia and Bureia rivers, and in Kamchatka Province, near the town of Okhotsk. The above-mentioned tonnage of coal and lignite was extracted from the mines in the Maritime Province, near Vladivostok. The only silver-lead-zinc mine worked was that of Tetiukhe, near the Tetiukhe Bay, 240 miles northeast of Vladivostok. The ores of this mine were exported to Germany, Belgium, and Japan, partly raw, partly calcined.

The blast furnace today continues as the primary production method of hot metal in large-scale steel production. The blast furnace process has been the target of repeated attempts to replace it with various process options, including direct reduction and coke-free smelting reduction. While these new technologies are being adopted in appropriate niches, the blast furnace has responded to the challenge by being amenable to continuous improvement. I will review the role of the blast furnace, major developmental and improvement trends, and then list the current important issues in ironmaking. I will outline the challenges to be faced by the blast furnace to maintain its position as the primary hot metal production process. The material presented here is an update of earlier presentations made in Stockholm, Sweden, 1996, Duluth, 1998 and Chicago, 2000.

Donald Cranstone holds B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Harvard University. He joined what is now the Minerals and Metals Sector of Natural Resources Canada in 1971, where he has been a commodity specialist for gold, for copper and another 28 metals. He is a senior mineral economist, currently engaged in analysis of mineral exploration and discovery success in Canada and of the future of the Canadian mining industry. Abstract This paper examines the history of Canadian non-petroleum mineral production. The outlook over the next 25 years, for mining in Canada and in each province and territory, is reviewed. The outlook for mining in Canada and in most provinces/territories is favourable, but problems seem likely in a few jurisdictions unless new orebodies are brought into production. In terms of exploration potential, Canada consistently ranks among the top three countries in the world. Over the last eight years, Canada has consistently been second only to Australia as a destination for exploration investment. For the first time, Canada is ranked in terms of total mineral production, including coal and construction materials, relative to all the countries of the world including countries of the former communist bloc.

During the past several years — much to the delight of producing firms and countries — copper prices have surged from under $1 to more than $3/lb. Anyone familiar with the industry also knows that since the early 1970s the long-run trend in real copper prices has been significantly downward. This sharp contrast between short-run and long-run trends raises the issue of the forces behind these developments. What has been driving short-run prices up and long-run prices down? Simple economics suggests that it is all a matter of supply and demand. When demand is rising faster than supply, prices will rise and vice versa.

Tunneling is at the threshold of a new era. An exciting new technology is becoming available. And, supplying the increasing quantities of minerals required by a growing and socially advancing world population, together with providing the subsurface facilities attendant to the rapid urbanization of the more developed countries of the world, will require underground excavation during the next decades on a scale that would have seemed fantastic a few years ago. It is estimated that world mineral consumption will increase fivefold by the year 2000. Projections for the United States indicate that domestic consumption of nonfuel minerals may increase two to three times by the end of the century. Meeting these requirements will entail opening up many new underground mines, even if present trends toward surface mining continue. And, at least in the United States, new factors that are becoming increasingly important may modify these trends. We are depleting our shallow easy- to-find and easy-to-mine mineral deposits; and, if we are to avoid becoming dangerously dependent on imports, we must turn more and more toward deeper deposits that are not amenable to surface mining. Growing public concern with environmental quality is apparently leading toward increasingly stringent regulation of surface mining which also will tend to make underground mining economically more attractive. The world market for underground construction is also growing rapidly. The most conservative projections indicate that in the United States alone more than $7.0 billion will be spent on excavation for underground facilities during the next ten years. And these estimates do not include any of the bold, imaginative new applications for underground excavation that have been proposed, such as extensive underground power transmission, the Chicago Deep Tunnel plan, and the Northeast Corridor Transportation project. There can be little doubt then that the market for tunnels for conventional applications is increasing rapidly and that the trend will continue. It

The use of graphite in industrial applications is one of the oldest in the world. Yet, it is one of the fastest-changing technologies today. Graphite was first used centuries ago in developing writing instruments and as a raw material in crucibles used in melting metal. Today, graphite is used in some of our most demanding industries. These include aerospace, electronics and automotive applications. Graphite usage has historically been split between the natural and synthetic forms. Figure 1 shows the breakdown of natural graphites and synthetic graphites used. The usage of natural graphites and synthetic graphites is split fairly evenly, although the applications are quite different. Figure 2 shows the breakdown of applications using natural graphite. The largest application is the refractory industry. This includes refractory brick and plastics, crucibles, shrouds and other refractory parts. This main application uses roughly 50% of all natural graphite. The refractory industry is an important application for natural graphite. However, the refractory markets have been struggling for several years. As demonstrated in Fig. 3 (Semler, 1996), the production of refractories in tons per year has declined by more than 32% during the last 25 years. Refractory prices have actually risen on a dollar per ton basis during that same period as the product mix has shifted to the value-added side. Raw material and production cost increases, inflation and other related costs have kept profitability at low levels for the industry. Furnace linings that once lasted 1,000-2,000 heats now last 8,000-12,000 heats. This means that tonnage requirements have gone down and quality requirements have gone up for graphite suppliers. Therefore, new opportunities and applications must be developed if the graphite industry is to grow. Synthetics are the other major forms of graphite. There are two forms of synthetic material currently used. One is the traditional type. It is made from the turnings of graphite electrode production. The second was developed in the mid-1970s in response to a shortage of conventional synthetic graphite. This occurred by a breakthrough in thermal technology. This new technology purifies, desulfurizes and graphitizes petroleum coke on a continuous basis at temperatures of more than 2,500° C (4,532° F). This product is called desulfurized petroleum coke (Desulco). It now accounts for about half of the synthetic type material used in the United States. Figure 4 shows the breakdown in the use of synthetic types of material by application. The largest requirement is for use as a carbon addition in iron and steel. This is followed by alkaline batteries and friction materials. Current technological opportunities New opportunities for graphite products are now being developed. These new areas are made possible due to the advances in graphite thermal technology. The ability to purify and modify graphite and carbon products is the key to future growth in the graphite industry. New, higher-purity, more consistent graphite products are leading to enhanced performance in current applications. They are also opening the door to new applications.

JAMAICA-bauxite and gypsum-but what else? J Does the Caribbean island have anything more to offer in the form of mineral wealth? One answer may be iron ore deposits which show enough promise to warrant exploitation in the near future by a company associated with Standard Ore & Alloys Corp. In addition, Jamaica is reported to have gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and a great many nonmetallic minerals. Of these, only platinum has not been produced commercially in the past. Right now, Jamaican bauxite is getting most of the publicity, but not too long ago other mining operations were in progress. Lack of proper interest, insufficient roads, and scarcity of venture capital forced those mining properties to suspend production.

Political issues and a glaring infrastructure deficiency have retarded the emergence of a strong mining component to the Alaskan economy in recent years. Barriers to orderly mineral development are slowly being removed attendant upon changing political circumstances. Infrastructure development, as an investment avenue as well as a responsibility of the State, is receiving much greater attention than in the past. Alaska of course has a rich and varied mining history going back to the 19th Century. This paper, however, focuses on the mining potential, not the mining heritage of the 49th State. The mining industry is emerging from a nadir in the economic cycle - times during which it was buffeted by unsympathetic administrations and confused and confounded by the protracted land status- conflicts prior to enactment; of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) and other milestone legislation. Today Alaska's mining industry looks toward a bright and healthy future and, in the process, will become a very important and vital component of the State and national economy.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas. In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investments in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-substitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.   The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. IT, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East.   The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

This paper covers oil shale resources in those countries that border the Pacific Rim. The major known resources around the Pacific Rim occur in the Western United States, Australia, the People's Republic of China, (PRC) and the Thailand/Burma region. The location of these deposits is shown in Figure 1. In 1965, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated world oil shale deposits of over 4 quadrillion tons having a potential oil yield of over 2 quadrillion barrels. If all this were extracted, it could meet the world's entire energy needs far into the future. However, the Survey also estimated the spent shale waste could cover all of the surface of the world to a depth of about 10 feet. Thus, for this and many other technical and economic reasons, it does not appear to be feasible to develop a large portion of the world's oil shale resources in this century; nor will shale in itself solve our energy problems. Nevertheless, shale oil and other ' synthetic fuels are expected to play an important role in new energy supplies in the longer term. WHAT IS OIL SHALE OR SHALE OIL? The term "oil shale" is sometimes a misnomer, in that the rock is often more of a limestone or siltstone than a shale. The common link between resources termed “oil shale" is that they all contain an insoluble substance cal led kerogen (which is from the Greek words for waxmaking). Kerogen is a form of organic carbon derived from a variety of plants ranging from algae to higher plants. When heated sufficiently, the kerogen generates hydrocarbons called shale oil, a form of synthetic crude oil that in most cases is lower in hydrogen content than conventional crude oil. The amount of oil in oil shale is relatively small --roughly 10 percent (by weight) in the richer shales. To upgrade this synthetic oil to usable products, additional processing is necessary. This brief sketch gives an idea of what this different, but significant, form of hydrocarbon is like. ENVIRONMENTS OF DEPOSITION Most oil shale deposits fall into three environments of sediment deposition: 1ake (called lacustrine), sea (marine) and river (fluvial-deltaic). In each case, the deposition of oil shales took place in quiet water environments where plant life, particularly algal plants, could flourish and, after dying, be deposited in unoxygenated water where the kerogen precursors would be safe from destruction by oxidation. The oil shales that were deposited in large lake basins (lacustrine) have attracted the most attention for development over the years. They often have multiple seams, deposited in a cyclic nature with extensive areal distribution and rapid vertical changes in kerogen content. Grades are moderate to high, ranging from 80 to 200 liters per tonne. Rundle in Australia and the Piceance Creek Basin in Colorado are examples of this type. Both deposits represent large volumes of oil shale in small areas which could provide the large volume of feedstock needed for future commercial operations. The stratigraphic sections of these two deposits feature thick oil shale seams with average grades of 80 - 125 liters/tonne conducive to both open pit, and underground operations. However, the rock strength of the Rundle shale is not sufficient to - support underground mining. On the other hand, the Colorado deposits, being more carbonate in nature, are sufficiently strong to support either type of mining depending on the overburden to ore ratio. These latter types of deposits will likely provide the first target for development of a commercial industry. The marine type is characterized by extensive areal distribution with relatively thin seams. The grades are generally low to moderate, ranging from 50 to 120 liters per tonne. The marine oil shales are common worldwide, and their attractiveness for mining is dependent on the overburden to ore ratio. Because of their widespread areal distribution, their in situ resources can be quite large. The Toolebuc Formation in Central , Queensland, Australia is a good example of this type of deposit being 7-10 meters thick over an extensive area. The Julia Creek deposit with its favorable overburden-to-ore ratio is being studied for possible development. In a fluvial-deltaic environment, there are many small lakes or bogs associated with rivers in which a very pure type of oil shale called torbanite could form. Torbanites are very high grade containing up to 75 percent hydrocarbons. The known occurrences are generally small lenticular deposits associated with coal seams. Even with the high grades, it is not likely that any of the known deposits would warrant commercial development because of their small size. The torbanite deposits in New South Wales, Australia were processed prior to World War I1 near the town of Glen Davis. However, today's known resources of this type are not large enough to warrant a commercial plant.
