OPEN-HEARTH refractories are not merely an accessory to the furnace. They are the furnace, to all intents and purposes. The steel work of the main structure is merely an open frame which helps to support the refractories ; and the regenerators, a necessary part of the furnace system, consist almost entirely of refractories. Not only do refractories constitute the essential part of the furnace, but they also carry the liquid steel all the way to the point where it begins to solidify. On leaving the furnace the liquid passes through a refractory runner into a refractory-lined ladle, then through a refractory nozzle closed by a refractory stopper on the end of a rod protected by refractory sleeve bricks. The liquid is sometimes sent through an additional refractory- lined tundish, a supplementary ladle, or a refractory runner for bottom pouring, until it finally enters the iron mold in which it solidifies. Even in the mold, refractory materials are sometimes used to provide a nonconducting "hot top." This series, from runner and ladle to hot top, inclusive, is often referred to collectively as the "pouring-pit refractories." REFRACTORY RAW MATERIALS The raw materials available are best classified into basic and acid types. The principal basic raw materials are magnesite, dolomite, and chrome ore. The principal acid materials are silica in various natural forms, and fireclay. Magnesite. Austria was the principal source of magnesite (MgCO3) until recent years, when the Province of Quebec, in Canada, and the states of Nevada and Washington became important sources for the American steel industry. 17.1--CURRENT AND FUTURE STATUS OF SURFACE MINING PAUL T. ALLSMAN AND PAUL F. YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. Part two of this three part series looks at explosives use in open-pit and underground mining operations. Part three, next month, will discuss the transportation, storage, handling, and destruction of explosives. Larger ore bodies, lower grade deposits, and more difficult geologic conditions have led to changes in blasting products, techniques, and field practices in both open-pit and underground metal mines. Pit blasting operations must consider the material's geology, needed fragmentation for the material, and hole diameter and depth-as well as the traditional consideration of the type of explosive used. With underground mines, various blasting aspects of burn, angle, and machine cuts must be considered for an efficient and safe operation. Of the factors related to open-pit blasting, geology of the material is most important. Many theories relating to sonic velocity and rock hardness are used to determine needed explosives ratios. Extensive field tests are necessary to determine these factors. In most cases, results assume that the material to be broken is homogenous. The drilling penetration rate is sometimes used as a guide to determine rock hardness; however, this is not necessarily a good idea. In many cases, a very hard, brittle rock will blast with less difficulty than a soft, spongy rock. The formation's stratification is also important. In thinly laminated horizontal seams, rock will usually break and adequately fragment with relatively large burdens and spacings using a low explosives ratio. Massive formations with few laminations require close burdens and spacings and a high explosives ratio. When the stratification is pitched on a severe angle, it is usually preferable to develop the pit face 90°-but no less than 45°-to the stratification. If the face must be developed parallel to the stratification, burdens and spacings must be reduced and the angle drilling that will conform to the angle of the lamination should be given serious consideration.

A portion of a tailings impoundment may need to be removed with the expansion of an open-pit mine in northeastern Nevada. The tailings are saturated and consist of fine silty soil. During the removal of the tailings, they would have no support structure and vibrations induced by blasting in the pit could lead to slope failures.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993. The design and scheduling of open pit operations are consistent problems encountered by the surface mining industry. Numerous techniques and algorithms have been developed to assist the mining engineer in the creation of optimum development strategies. Virtually all the practical techniques that have been produced have concentrated on one of the aspects (limit definition or scheduling) at the expense of the other. It has long been recognised, however, that the two activities are intrinsically linked and thus solving either problem independently of the other can only ever produce sub-optimal results as a whole. This has been termed the "circular reasoning problem". It has also been recognised that, for all practical-sized situations, solving both problems simultaneously is virtually impossible using conventional techniques due to the massive size of the search space involved. A technique is presented which is based on a self-learning genetic algorithm, which provides a combined pit limit and extraction schedule simultaneously in order to maximise the NPV (net present value) of the extraction. The theory is developed in two-dimensions and a number of examples of its application are presented. It is proposed that this approach is a highly efficient, heuristic technique offering the potential to transcend the circular reasoning difficulties of separate pit limit and extraction scheduling systems. "As open-pit operations expanded at Pine Point, hydraulic aquifer evaluation was undertaken to establish the criteria necessary for the design of a feasible dewatering system.The extreme climate of this northern location dictated that the ore zone under extraction be rendered as dry as possible to minimize freezing effects. The design and implementation of such a system necessitated detailed hydraulic evaluation, and the problems that occurred are typical of those inherent in open-pit mining operations in northern areas.The paper describes the problem solution as approached from a mine engineering point of view, with particular reference to the practical aspects of operation and installation. The hydrological analysis used is simple and readily applicable to most open-pit dewatering problems."

Principal factors influencing equipment selection can be grouped into five basic categories: tonnage requirements, ore and waste; topography and property line considerations; ore control requirements; physical characteristics of ore and waste; and climatic considerations. Loading, transporting and ground preparation equipment are largely determined by tonnage requirements. Large size equipment is appropriate for a production of about six million tpm, medium size for three million tons and small size for one million tons or less.

IT has been found that, during any particular period of operation or in mining any particular area of the Castle Dome mine, there appears variation between mine grade and mill grade, thus Ear always in the plus direction. It would be interesting to know if this condition obtains at other properties, and, if possible, to alter the sampling methods or computations in order to get better agreement between mine and mill figures.

INTRODUCTION of bottom dump hauling units into the Ray, Ariz., stripping operation of the Isbell Construction Co., was motivated by several reasons, with what appears to be debatable results. The accepted theory of truck design for use in open-pit holds that end dump vehicles are the most adaptable for the work. But, because operations of the bottom dump, under certain construction and haulage conditions, proved economically feasible, the unit was put to work in the Ray copper pit. The decision to try bottom dump was reached after considerable observation of the unit in action on construction of earth filled dams, levees, airport construction and several other similar tasks. Basic tire design also motivated the choice. All things being equal, a vehicle running on low pressure single tires will outperform another operating on dual high pressure tires, providing load carrying capacities are the same. The investment required to equip a vehicle with four single tires to handle the same load as one with dual tires mounted on two axles and single front axles is about 60 pct greater. Thus, in order to reach the break even point on tire costs, single tires must operate 60 pct longer. Comparison is made with a truck outfitted with 10 16:00x25 tires. Two other factors were considered in selecting bottom dump trucks. It was felt the bottom dump principle would work well in dumping ore into a hopper where gate design fits this particular method. Also, with the absence of hydraulic dumping, ore pollution with oil is reduced. The mechanical simplicity of the unit also lent weight to its choice. Ordinary reasoning indicated maintenance costs would be low compared with other units carrying similar loads. The bottom dumping principle is not new. It dates back to the days when horses were used to haul the same kind of rig. The unit employed at Ray holds 25 cu yd struck measure, or approximately 42 short tons. Dumping is accomplished by releasing an air cylinder opening a dog holding the doors. Doors are closed by a cable system operating off a wheel wind deriving power by friction with the trailer tire. The unit is mounted on four 27.00x33 and two 14.00x24 tires on the front axle. The power unit is a 300 hp Cummins engine. Hydraulic power boosts the steering. A straight mechanical drive and friction clutch with 10 speeds is used. Conditions Not Ideal Top performance of the truck can be expected only under the conditions for which it was designed, in particular grades under 5 pct, handling fine material, and dumping where one thin layer can be placed on top of another. SAFETY in open-pit mining receives a minimum of notoriety, but its significance in profitable and efficient operation is as great as in other methods of mining. Open-pit operators from Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico, exchanging ideas on safety at a symposium during the recent annual meeting of the Arizona Section, AIME, discovered unanimity of opinion that the successful safety program depended on managerial and supervisory support with the vigorous cooperation of the employes. Safety Organization The operation of a safety program is dependent on the ability of management to project enthusiasm through the company organization. This requires a suitable method of communication to the supervisory and employee levels so as to approach them in a manner that will inspire cooperation. Safety committees comprised of various combinations of managerial, supervisory, and employe personnel are frequently used for this purpose. The open-cut mine of the Chino Division of the Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex., operates its program through management, a full-time safety engineer, and two safety committees, the Departmental and Shops Safety Committee and the Central Safety Committee. The Departmental and Shops Committee consists of one employe from each department and shop and the safety engineer. The selected members serve for a period of one month. This committee meets once a month, the only representative of management being the safety engineer because it is believed that employes will speak more freely when their supervisors are not present. The duties of the committee are to report hazardous conditions and make recommendations, but the committee has no authority to approve or disapprove. The Central Safety Committee is comprised of supervisory personnel from all departments and shops, and one member of each of the five bargaining organizations. Members of this committee are permanent and hold meetings soon after the departmental group to take action on recommendations of the latter. The committee system insures participation of all levels of personnel in the accident-prevention program, thereby stimulating safety consciousness. The New Cornelia branch of the Phelps-Dodge Corp., uses three groups to conduct the safety program; the General Safety Committee, Division Safety Committee, and the operating-unit safety meetings. The unit safety meetings provide for active participation of employes in discussion of various phases of the program. Within these groups vigorous opinions regarding safety are often expressed and the workmen are critical if they recognize a digression from the adopted safe-practice procedures. These monthly discussions give the program vitality. The Division Safety Committee is composed of the division superintendent and the division department heads, and follows an established pattern in discussion of all phases of the safety program. The General Safety Committee, made up of the manager, division, and department heads, makes decisions on policies and procedures; it renders decisions on recommendations and suggestions. THE Western phosphate field, virtually ignored for 40 years, has been undergoing a rapid climb to economic importance. Until World War II there seemed to be no reason for developing the phosphate rock region of the Intermountain Empire. But the tremendously increased demand for food production and the needs of many branches of the chemical industry changed all that. Quite suddenly a report made by the U. S. Geological Survey at the turn of the century became important. The survey showed that 60 pet of the nation's phosphate reserves were in the western phosphate field. Simplot Fertilizer Co. was one of the first to become actively interested in the development of the area. In August, 1945 the company began exploration of the Phosphoria Formation on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The result was the Gay Mine, about 18 miles east of Indian Agency Headquarters at Fort Hall, Idaho, developed to supply high grade phosphate rock for processing into superphosphate fertilizer at the company's Pocatello plant. Six ft of high grade oolitic phosphate rock (ranging from 32.5 to 34.5 pet P2O5) were discovered at the base of the Phosphoria Formation by diamond drilling and dozer trenching. High quality and thickness, plus the fact that the formation lay flat and near the surface made strip and open pit mining possible. ON the Minnesota Ranges, 600 million tons of material have been moved in the past three years to produce 172 million tons of direct-shipping iron ore. Increasing wage rates and cost of equipment and supplies, coupled with the larger amount of waste material to be moved in comparison with the quantity of ore make it imperative that tile industry adopt all practices and methods which will enable it to move earth at progressively lower costs. Drilling. Prior to and during the war practically all blastholes drilled were 6-in. in diameter and put down by drills using strings of tools weighing from 2000 to 3000 lb. Present trends indicate that heavier drilling equipment making 9-in. holes wit11 3000 to 6000 lb tools will be more economical. Holes up to 12 in. diameter will be made with this equipment. Forging and hardening practices for bits to increase footage is receiving attention. One manufacturer expects to market 9-in. bits having sintered carbide inserts in the reaming and cutting edges. Oxygen and oil to burn holes in the rock are being tested for making blastholes at a considerably greater speed than can be obtained with a blasthole drill on the same size hole. Battery Electric Vehicles offer increased energy efficiency for open-pit load & haul operations at a potentially lower overall carbon cost. Electrifying a mine’s fleet, however, presents a unique set of operational challenges. In this study, we explore the effects of electrification on productivity at real operations using a Discrete Event Simulator. The model can simulate multiple shifts, a mixed fleet of diesel and electric trucks, charging and refueling stations, trolley systems, and accurate shovel-truck loading cycles. This study helps determine the trade-offs of adopting electric fleets and how they interact with the layout of today's mines.

A common casualty of modern open-pit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow, and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, all of these problems are addressed by encoding these three fundamental open-pit mine optimization problems as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are non-linear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.

Chile leads the world in copper production with an annual capacity nearing 2 Mt (2.2 million st). Most of the country’s copper production, about 74%, is mined by open-pit mining methods. Open-pit mining also accounts for a major portion of Chile’s production of other commodities, including iron, gold, silver and coal (Table 1). Chile’s mining boom began 10 years ago and is expected to continue through the end of the decade. From 1980 to 1990, copper production in Chile increased 48.7%. During the same period, gold production increased 303%, silver production increased 119% and coal and iron ore production increased 163.7% and 6.6%, respectively (Table 2). It is estimated that copper production will be in the order of 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) by 1996, when new projects now under construction come onstream. Gold production could reach 35 t (1.1 million oz) and coal production could increase another 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy). Open-pit mining has played a significant role in Chile’s minerals production growth. The expected increases in mine operations will come about mainly through new open pits or expansions of existing surface operations (Table 3). However, the number of open-pit copper mines will decrease from 74% to 66% of the total number of Chilean mines. Gold mines will increase from 63% to 69% of the total, while coal mines will go from 41% to 59%. Most all of the present iron ore production is from surface mines and will continue that way.

Open-pit mining on the iron range has been in a stage of transition for several years from the standpoint of mechanization. The most radical change in open-pit mining methods was started in open-pit haulage in 1937 with the departure from the then standard system of locomotive and car transportation and the advent of the heavy duty truck as a replacement. The initial use of trucks was followed shortly by the first installation of a conveyor belt for open-pit ore haulage. The growth of the combination of trucks for gathering units delivering to a conveyor system for transportation out of the pit, has been rapid and this transition appears to have reached a peak in 1949 with locomotives and cars now being used in only a few of the largest open pits. One point which must be considered, if we assume that the maximum equipment change- over point has been reached, is that the largest pits have probably passed their peak of production. Future ore replacement must come from smaller pits wherein the truck conveyor system has done an outstanding job.

CHUQUICAMATA open-pit mine is capable of producing a total of 105,000 tons daily. When the sulphide plant is operating to capacity the distribution of this quantity will be approximately 30,000 tons sulphide ore, 30,000 tons oxide ore and 45,000 tons of waste. At that time the combined capacity of the oxide and sulphide plants will be about 540 million lb of copper per year. Twenty one benches have been opened to date and all are still active except the three top ones at the northeastern limit of the pit. These have been pushed back to final slope line. The pit is 8850 ft long, 3540 ft wide and 980 ft deep. Benches are not all developed to a standard height as the large development shovels used in cutting new benches have been of different size and range. At this time new benches 521 ft high are being developed with an' 11-yd shovel. Ore haulage through the greater part of the pit operation has been on down grades to the crushing plant. With the opening of bench F-4 in April 1944 the first adverse-grade ore haul was encountered. Of the total tonnage now being mined, 35 pct comes from the four benches that are below the level of the crushing plant yard. Waste had been dumped on the same or nearly the same level as the bench from which it was removed up to the opening of bench F-4. Waste from this and lower levels is hauled to the level of the crusher, yard where it must cross the flow of ore traffic to reach the only available dumping space to the east of the mine. The average ore haul is 3.13 miles one way shovel to crusher, and the average waste haul from that portion handled by railroad is 3.32 miles one way from shovel to waste dump. Waste that is being removed by truck haulage from the upper part of the -mine is hauled an average of 1 mile. Ore loaded by trucks is hauled 3/4 mile to a car loading ramp and then by rail to the crushing plant. Drilling and Blasting There are two types of development for blasting being used: One for opening new benches and the other for bank shooting. The former consists of 9a in. diam churn-drill holes drilled 11.8 ft center to center in rows 10.2 ft apart with the holes staggered in the rows thus giving an equilateral-triangle pattern of 11.8 ft on a side. After the first block, 492 ft long by 71.5 ft wide, is shot in the pattern described above, the cut is advanced by smaller shots consisting of four rows of holes spaced 23 ft center to center with the rows 23 ft apart. These shots are fired in conjunction with side shots in which the holes are drilled 33 ft center to center and 29.5 ft back from the toe, thus squaring up the bank for subsequent shooting. THE DEVELOPMENT by the Iron Ore Company of Canada of the Quebec-Labrador mining project, which eventually led to 'Iron Ore in 1954', involved, from the start, several distinct undertakings. Among them, the most important were: The construction of a 360-mile railway, linking Knob Lake with Seven Islands. The erection of a railway terminal, and harbour facilities, at Seven Islands itself. The building of an entire townsite at Schefferville (formerly Knob Lake) The construction of two hydroelectric plants; and, finally, The development of a sufficient number of orebodies to enable a production of 10 to 15 million tons of ore a year. Since these phases of the project have already been the subject of previous discussions, this paper will not elaborate further on them but will rather concern itself with a brief outline of the Company's current mining practices.

Mining means drilling and blasting in order to break down the rock, loading and transport, and often also crushing the ore down to a suitable size. These operations can be done in open pits or in underground mines, and also, to a lesser extent, in marine mining. The same operations are also used in various types of construction, i.e., for roads, water power stations, etc. Before beginning a detailed economic analysis of the factors which enter into deciding whether to mine by open-pit or underground mining, and at what point a change should be made from open-pit to underground mining, or vice versa, it is of interest to consider some general factors.
