Cyanide-free technology of complex copper-lead ores flotation may be improved through enlarged range of pH values, enhanced copper recovery into copper concentrates due to additional recovery of secondary copper sulfides, as well as through enhanced efficiency of lead sulfides depression in process of new flotation modifiers-based selective separation. Study of the effects of flotation modifier (of metal nature) on minerals surface conditions proved that the xanthate is practically not adsorbed on the galenite surfaces due to minerals hydrophilization. Joint effects of sodium sulfite and modifier enhance process conditions for intensive galenite depression and at the same time for effective chalcopyrite and chalcosine flotation within a large pH values range (from pH=8 to pH=10). Identified mechanisms carry inference that proposed chemical reagent treating method is very promising for selective copper-lead concentrates separation. Potential use of carbon-containing materials as zinc flotation modifier to enhancing zinc recovery in processes of lead-zinc ores treatment has been studied. In our flotation tests we used Shalkiya (South Kazakhstan) lead-zinc ores containing such impurities as carbon shales, which presence impedes the process of saleable concentrates production and gives rise to excessive consumption of flotation agents due to the xanthate adsorption on the carbon. Lead and zinc concentrates were produced by process stages as follows: ores milled to 95% Cl. -0.074 +0; lead and zinc roughing flotation and further recleaner and testing operations. Test flotation in open process cycle resulted in enhancing zinc recovery into zinc concentrates by 21.1% and increasing zinc content in zinc concentrates by 3.96% that evidences promising potentialities for use of carbon-containing products as additional zinc flotation modifier. A new copper-molybdenum flotation technology developed for a certain coppermolybdenum ore is introduced. We achieved copper-molybdenum bulk flotation in lowalkali conditions. Locked-circuit test results showed that the bulk concentrate contained 21.05% Cu and 1.10% Mo, with copper recovery of 87.37% and molybdenum recovery of 77.07%. For the copper–molybdenum separation process of the bulk concentrate, we use a new depressant, BK511, to replace the traditional sodium hydrosulfide. We achieved copper–molybdenum separation through one rougher, nine cleaner, and two scavenger processes. The results of locked-circuit tests showed that the molybdenum concentrate contained 46.19% Mo and 0.75% Cu, with molybdenum recovery of 93.80%; the copper concentrate contained 21.50% Cu and 0.069% Mo, with copper recovery of 99.92%. This new technology overcomes disadvantages of using large amounts of lime, sodium hydrosulfide, and other reagents in traditional copper–molybdenum flotation.

Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. The fundamental characteristics of ultrafine chalcopyrite flotation were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to establish techniques to improve recovery of ultrafine chalcopyrite. Intense agitation during conditioning was found to improve flotation recovery of the ultrafine chalcopyrite. A split-circuit flotation design, treating the plus 38-µm-size ore by the conventional method and treating the minus 38-µm-size ore with intense agitation conditioning followed by flotation, recovered 95.6 pct of the copper in a 28.3-pct-copper concentrate, This was a 5-pct increase in copper recovery over the conventional chalcopyrite flotation method.

"A t last the legal red tape which has tied up flow-through share financing has been cut. New rules effective for deals signed after 1986 simplify flow-through financing by removing the necessity f or cumbersome agency relationships. But there is no free lunch-the new rules require increased government reporting. And beware federal tax reform promises to have a good look at the new flow-through share rules. IntroductionFlow-through shares have always worked better in theory then reality as an effective financing tool. The concept is straightforward: a transfer of risks, tax deductions, and potential returns. But the mechanics of the old flow-through rules made the transfer of risk impractical to impossible by placing the responsibility for incurring Canadian exploration expense (CEE) on investors. The new rules are significantly more realistic, shifting that responsibility to the issuing corporation. However, every silver lining must have a few clouds around it. In the case of the new flow-through rules, the more obvious negatives are increased reporting requirements and reductions in CEE eligible for flow-through by amounts of assistance received. The new rules are effective for deals signed after 1986, however, so a few old-style deals are still around. Practical Difficulties with Old RulesThe old rules which applied to investments in flow-through shares were structured so as to make it the responsibility of the investor, rather than the issuing corporation, to perform the Canadian exploration expense for flow-through. Since most investors had neither the expertise nor the inclination to incur the CEE, this requirement necessitated the use of cumbersome arrangements whereby the investors would appoint an agent (usually the issuing corporation) to incur CEE on their behalf. Although the issuing corporation might consequently be the party which actually spends the flow-through share funds on CEE, the awkward legal structure of such an arrangement made the investor the ""principal"" incurring the CEE. As such, the requirements of the old rules were met and the investors could receive their flow-through share s."

An alternative flowsheet was designed for the flotation treatment of a complex sulfide ore from the Sotiel Mine in Spain. The ore contains 0.71% Cu, 2.24% Pb and 5.63% Zn. Two specially developed synthetic collectors, methyl-mercapto-benzoxazole (MMBO) and 6n-propoxy-mercapto-benzo-thiazole (PMBT), were examined. MMBO exerts a specific action on copper and zinc minerals after treatment with copper sulfate, and PMBT exerts a specific action on Pb minerals. Flotation operating variables (pH, frother type, frother quantity and feed particle size) were examined by means of rougher flotation tests to determine the optimum conditions for the new collectors. Once the optimum conditions were determined, a series of open flotation circuits were run on feeds of various particle sizes (obtained by different types of grinding). The objective was to obtain high-grade Cu and Zn concentrates. The results of the open-circuit tests demonstrated that a Cu concentrate grading from 18% to 23% Cu and a Zn concentrate grading from 40% to 48% Zn can be produced.

The experience that has been gained by MMC ?Norilsk Nickel? at its Trans-Polar Division (PD) operations since 1981 in the field of recovery of elemental sulfur from off-gas generated by the Vanyukov and flash smelting through its reduction by natural gas is briefly outlined in the present paper. The key challenge the operators treating off-gas originated from autogenous smelting are usually faced with is the presence of sulphur trioxide in it. Furthermore, air inflows along the entire gas flue increase oxygen concentration in off-gas, thus leading to over-consumption of the reducer (natural gas). Another issue attached to the methane technology is a low yield of hydrogen sulphide largely preventing efficient downstream Claus conversion of the gas. The new flowsheet for treatment of autogenous smelting off-gases including dry dust-cleaning followed by the gas reduction in homogenous reactor developed by OAO Gipronickel Institute on the basis of industrial-scale production of elemental sulfur in Norilsk is presented.

"In the Utility Nickel furnaces, the hearth and sidewalls are lined with high-Al2O3 bricks. During charging and thermal cycling (more so as the linings on these reverberatory furnaces age), pieces of brick spall or abrade from the refractory and collect on the top of the bath. These pieces are removed using a non-corrosive slag toward the end of the heat when the bath temperature is ~1600°C.This benign liquid can be generated by two methods. First and most obvious, suitable ingredients can be pre-mixed so that the flux (flux A) is isochemical with the non-corrosive slag. All that is needed to produce this targetted slag is heat. Second, in other proportions (flux B), the pre-mixed ingredients generate a corrosive slag that melts completely at -1200 °C and corrodes some but not all of the brick particles on the bath surface. As the reaction progresses, the slag changes composition eventually attaining the targetted benign composition. Using this option, additions are monitored to avoid overfluxing. In both cases, the generated slag/brick mixture can then be rabbled from the furnace. This practice has been successfully used for over two years and has been a factor in extending Utility Nickel furnace life to its current levels (about25% increase)."

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the environmental benefits of properly managing slurry waste as it is generated on site. The following projects will be used to illustrate the importance of proper onsite waste management. Project: Jet Grout Backflow Dewatering The goal was to dewater the backflow directly onsite to produce a dry, solid waste and reusable water. The backflow spoil was pumped directly to the dewatering system as it was generated. Utilizing mechanical separation equipment and flocculation polymer the waste volume was reduced by 44%. Due to the site footprint and high volumes, slurry waste removal and onsite processing were the only two feasible options. Onsite dewatering proved to be the environmentally beneficial option as it eliminated the need for slurry waste hauling and disposal. The benefits of utilizing a dewatering system are listed below: Project: Soil Mixing Spoil Recycling for Slurry Wall Construction In this application the spoils generated contain bentonite mud, cement mixture and organic ground soils. The goal of this project was to process the backflow mixture to recover reusable bentonite mud and separate the soil as a dry, stackable waste product. The treatment system replaced the traditional method of vacuum truck extraction and facility disposal. The environmental benefits of properly handling the backflow is a decrease in fresh water usage, bentonite additive reduction, and the reduction of CO2 emissions. The paper will consist of a project scope, technical equipment and process description, environmental impact reduction calculations and lessons learned for each project.

A major highlight of Fiscal Year 1993 is the completion of a new research facility dedicated to the advancement of robotics research and development. This new facility brings to the U.S. Bureau of Mines one of the largest and most unique facilities of its kind in the world. Located at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center, the facility consolidates under one roof, all of the resource requirements of a first class automation and robotics research program. The Mining Robotics Development Center (MRDC) is the result of a major renovation of a large under-utilized warehouse-type structure and brings together the laboratories and offices previously housed in five separate buildings scattered throughout the Pittsburgh Research Center's 238-acre site. This new facility will support the computer-assisted mining research program, a high priority, multi-million dollar program that is expected to have a high impact on the health and safety of miners and coal productivity.

"Removal of silicates and carbonates from sedimentary phosphate ores by the use of new synthetic collector/formulations was investigated in a comparative study with traditionally used collector systems as references. In the direct carbonate flotation the new formulations showed higher efficiency, contributed to an improved balance of P2O5 recovery and P2O5 enrichment in the recovered material. Efficiency of the new formulations containing synthetic surfactants was 1.5–2 times better than potassium salt of fatty acid sulfonate based formulations that are traditionally used for that purpose. The new formulations also provided up to 7% increase in P2O5 recovery at the same P2O5 grade. The new synthetic collectors for removal of silicates showed extremely good selectivity towards silica bearing minerals. The selectivity factor for the flotation tests when new formulations were used was 32–52 and for the flotation tests with the traditional collectors: 20–32. The ratio between distribution of an amount of silicates (as SiO2) and distribution of phosphate in the froth (waste) is defined as the selectivity factor. The new formulations provided more than 2% decrease of the amount of SiO2 at the same P2O5 recovery.INTRODUCTIONPopulation growth and decrease of arable land are the main reasons for constant increase of consumption of apatite (phosphate ore) in the fertilization field (Lannefors, Gorochovceva, Klingberg, Lima, & Gustafsson, 2015). Fertilizers play a key role for farmers to produce more with less land. The phosphate component of the fertilizer is vital for producing healthy and large amount of crop. As a result the demand for phosphate rock is growing.The largest producers of phosphate rock are the Unites States, Morocco, Tunisia, China, Russia, and Brazil. The term “phosphate ore” includes all phosphate-bearing minerals and rocks, but only two of them are of industrial interest: apatite (igneous origin) and sedimentary phosphate (Peres, Araujo, El-Shall, Zhang, & Abdel-Khalek, 2007). The majority of the world’s phosphate deposits are of the sedimentary type. There are two different types of sedimentary phosphates: siliceous and carbonaceous which are categorized based on gangue minerals (such as quartz, carbonates, mica, and clay)."

As for Earth, where human beings live, approximately 70 % of its surface is covered by oceans. Today, advanced technology has led us to understanding the abyssal ocean floor through the use of submersibles and ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) for the last 30 years. Furthermore, the oceanic crust beneath the abyssal floor still remains an unexplored scientific frontier due to the lack of a direct approach. Exploration of this frontier is required to enhance our understanding of the mechanism of the M.8 class plate-subduction-type earthquake, of generation of the big tsunami, that caused the disaster, and of the paleo-global environmental change as well as of the origin of life as viewed in deep water thermal vents.

"This paper briefly summaries the status of a recent program aimed at identifying new chemistry for use as sulfide mineral frothers and collectors. The background motivation and planning behind this work is given along with the general families of chemical structures synthesied and studied in detail followed by typical flotation application results in various laboratory and plant scale tests. Flotation testing to date has been very encouraging with often improved recoveries of certain minerals and improved pyrite selectivity being observed over commercially available reagents. In addition, in some cases, the dosage and lime requirements of these new collectors are significantly less than that associated with standard sulfide mineral collectors. INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores. There are numerous reference books that have been published on the chemical aspects of flotation [e.g., ref. 1-7] which are based on studying the influence on selected minerals of chemical structures that have been used commercially for many years. In fact, almost 98% of the volume of flotation collector and frother reagents used at the industrial level today were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago [8]. There are many reasons for this lack of significant new flotation reagent development [9] including the general utility and relative cheapness of existing collectors such as xanthates and existing frothers such as the alcohols and glycol ethers. Another reason is the inherent complexity of the flotation process itself coupled with highly variable and difficult to standardize feed materials. This environment makes reliable reagent comparisons difficult and seriously limits the use of theoretically based chemical structure studies to predict new or optimal reagents. In addition, the higher cost of specialty flotation reagents demands that their performance attributes be significantly greater than that achieved with existing all-purpose commercial reagents - something often difficult to prove in practice."

A discussion on design conditions for a future Sulphuric Acid Plant using Teniente Converter gases is also included. The old system which started to be modified in 1985 and relied on natural draft and used balloon flues, resulted in a limited gas handling capacity for operation under future process conditions. This system also caused excessive fugitive gases in the smelter working areas. The new system permits handling of process gases from the higher capacity Teniente Converters Installed in 1987-1989 improving the gas handling of the reverberatory furnaces and Peirce-Smith converters as well as the environmental conditions of the smelter. This system utilises improved converter gas hoods, evaporative cooling and electrostatic precipitators gas cleaning, and is based on natural draft.

A model of ore value distributions is presented that is the culmination of a statistical approach rather than simply a model that has been successfully applied to the evaluation of ore reserves. Detailed geological and physical observations based on large sampling data sets have been used to support the statistical modelling. Fundamental to the modelling process is the concept that the occurrence of a given grade value in space is a function not only of the presence of the mineral but also of the fact that it is associated with a specific trapping mechanism. Gas sensing systems are becoming more important in many industries such as oil, gas and mining operations. Particularly in underground coalmines, accurate and reliable monitoring of toxic and combustible gases such as methane, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide is essential. Available conventional electrochemical sensors for gas measurements in underground coalmines suffer from shortcomings such as cross-sensitivity response, limited lifetime, high calibration cost, maintenance cost and safety. Recent studies have found that fibre optic-based gas sensors have potential to eliminate these issues. These sensors can also be used for long distance and distributed sensing of various gases, both of which are important for underground gas monitoring. This paper delivers insights into how high availability combines with high efficiency at the Yanacocha Plant, Newmont Mining Corporation, Peru. Advances in motor design and maintenance with integration of smart control support the approach plant maintenance staff is applying to deliver such excellent results for availability and efficiency in Yanacocha and elsewhere. Detailed efficiency and availability data for 2011 and 2012 in Yanacocha are provided. ABB and Yanacocha teams collaborate closely by combining their experience and continuous development of gearless mill drive procedures and maintenance knowledge to deliver the impressive performance being achieved. The secrets for high performance shared by the Yanacocha maintenance operations point to their systematic, practical adherence to modern asset management and maintenance concepts.
