Nowhere in the world has cone classification in closed-circuit grinding with tube mills reached as high a state of development as on the Wit-watersrand. In the development of the Far East section the necessity of fine grinding to obtain satisfactory residues gave rise to a situation with which the cone could cope only at a great sacrifice in efficiency of tube-mill grinding. H. A. White1 recognized the limitation of the cone in his study of the theory of tube milling as early as 1915, but it was not until Ewing, Davis and Willey2 carried out their tests at Springs Mines during 1920 that the advantages of mechanical classifiers were demonstrated. During the fall of 1924 the writer supervised a series of tests with Dorr classifiers undertaken by Mr. White, Consulting Metallurgist, at the mill of the Geduld Proprietary Mines, Ltd., Dersley, Transvaal (Far East Rand). The importance of classification to obtain efficient tube-mill grinding was thoroughly demonstrated. The installation of classifiers of the above type that followed the test confirmed the results of the experimental work. Tests with Cones, Straight Type and Bowl Classifiers The test at the Geduld mill was made to determine the relative grinding efficiency of a tube mill when grinding in closed circuit with cones, straight type Dorr classifier and Dorr bowl classifier. The efficiency of a tube mill, as expressed in this article, is based on the tons of minus 200-mesh material produced by the mill. The efficiency is also expressed in terms of tons of minus 90-mesh material produced by the mills to correspond to the standard practice on the Witwatersrand. In this investigation, the low-grade red iron ores of Alabama were examined by the use of "heavy solutions."' Ores are generally ground preparatory to concentration and as long as the concentrators make suitable products the effectiveness of the grinding is likely to be unquestioned; but when suitable products are difficult to make, an investigation becomes imperative. In such a case a dissection of the ore might be made to find the cause of the trouble. Such a condition of unsuitable products exists in the low-grade red iron ores of Alabama. They are difficult to concentrate. To be sure it might be said that the concentration of iron ores is a new thing and that the ore-dressing methods are undeveloped, but a glance at the industry reveals an abundance of methods and devices for almost all imlaginable conditions. Concentrating machinery has not been tested in this investigation. When the properties of the ores have been gleaned, the machinery may be used more effectively. Alabama Low-grade Red Iron Ores The Bureau of Mines has undertaken by laboratory methods to select the best means of concentrating the low-grade iron ores of Alabama. These ores constitute the parts of the ore bed left by selective mining. If more of the ore bed could be included in the current output, the mining cost would be reduced and longer life of the district would be insured. This advantage would be reflected by added permanence of churches, homes, schools and every undertaking in the commonwealth. In the metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alkaline or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have successfully introduced it in the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its application. Previous investigations of E. L. Tucker and R. E. Head' related in particular to the effect of cyanogen compounds on galena, sphalerite, and pyrite, and their behavior in the presence of such compounds. The present contribution deals with the floatability of the copper minerals and of pyrite. All experiments were performed on minus 200-mesh material, the method of preparation being the same as that described in the previous article. Flotation tests were made in a small mechanically agitated machine of 50-gm. capacity designed in this laboratory by Gates and Jacobsen.2 General Naval Stores pine oil No. 5 and potassium xanthate were used in constant amount in all of the experiments; these agents were selected because of their present wide use in the flotation of copper minerals. Time additions were varied to secure four final hydrogen ion concentrations, namely, neutral, 0.0005 per cent. CaO, 0.003 per cent. CaO, and 0.02 per cent. CaO. The variation in lime addition was introduced to include the range of alkalinities employed in actual flotation practice. The minerals employed were the purest obtainable. Although a few engineers have recognized the problem of the mechanism of filtration it has never been studied in a quantitative way. A background for a better understanding will be afforded by a survey of certain fundamental principles of filtration. In recent years, authorities have become practically unanimous in saying that the actual filtering should be done, not by the cloth itself, but by a layer of solid particles deposited upon it. Thus, a cloth may be used in which the openings are considerably larger than the particles to be filtered, provided that groups of particles form an arch or bridge over each opening. This can be accomplished if the initial pressure is so low that the arch will not be broken while it is still thin. According to Wright,' the chief advantage of this method of filtration is that the open-weave cloth does not become clogged as easily as does one of closer weave, where the fine particles often work their way into the interior of the cloth and become caught there. If the character of the material to be filtered is such that it will not form a good film, then it becomes advantageous to use "filter aids" for pre-coating the cloth with a desirable layer of solids, and the coating need be only of a very slight thickness for good results. Until the film is formed, the first runnings of the filtrate may be cloudy, often necessitating refiltering this portion. A factor which has considerable effect on the performance of filters is the concentration of solids in the pulp. According to Wright, a high concentration of solids gives a porous cake, since the flow is then slower than with a thin pulp. The porosity of the cake is also affected by the pressure: a high initial pressure tends to compact the cake, and the same effect results from fluctuations of pressure. In his studies of the relation between pore size and particle size, Hatschek2 observed that the particles in a pulp tend to arrange themselves with maximum cross-section parallel to the direction of flow and that this is more marked at the higher vclocfiies. THe present methods of unloading ore and coarse-crushing at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. are the developments of the pas five years. Hand dumping and breaking have given way to the rotary car dump and large gyratory; and the bucket elevators and stationary screens have been replaced by conveyors and shaking screens. The coarse-crushing plant may be broadly divided into two units the primary crushing and the secondary crushing, or primary roll, unit The former was erected in 1923; with the exception of the excavation the construction was carried on by forces of the company. Excavation was started in the middle of March, the first concrete was poured July 16, erection of the steel building started Oct. 30, and the unit was com pleted and operating Dec. 30. The unit has a capacity of over 24,001 tons of ore per day, and cost more than a million dollars. Remodeling of the primary-roll unit extended over a period of years preceding this some of the work having been done as early as 1918. Delivery of Ore from Mine, Yard Storage, and Handling Ori Cars to and from Primary Crushing Plant The ore is transported, in steel cars of 80 tons capacity, from the min' to the mill, where a reserve tonnage of loaded cars is maintained. Malle locomotives, handling trains of 45 cars, or approximately 3600 tons o ore per train, deliver the trains to a storage yard which contains thre tracks—a passing track and two storage tracks. All of this trackage i equipped with an overhead trolley system, so that electric locomotive can be used in yard switching. The storage tracks have a total length of 4500 ft. and provide storag space for 140 cars. The passing track, besides permitting switchin room for locomotives, is used for storage purposes between train arrivals thus giving intermittently a total storage capacity for the yard of approxi mately 200 cars. The ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from the company's mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent, of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment. Gravity Concentrator The gravity concentrator has a capacity of about 465 tons in 24 hr. The mill buildings are of wood. The mill was built in 1905 to handle approximately 90 tons in 24 hr.; since that time several additions have been built and various changes have been made in the flow sheet. THE property of New Calumet Mines, Limited, is on Calumet island, in the Ottawa river, about sixty-six miles northwest of Ottawa. Lead and zinc orebodies were discovered here in 1893. A gravity concentration plant was built in 1912 but was not a success metallurgically, and the plant was later destroyed by fire. A programme of diamond drilling on the property, started in 1937 and continuing to 1942, indicated ore reserves amounting to 1,300,000 tons averaging 2.75 per cent lead, 8.82 per cent zinc, and 0.041 oz. gold and 6.24 oz. silver per ton( l ). These orebodies have been developed underground by cross-cutting and drifting from a three-compartment vertical shaft, sunk to a depth of 745 feet. 'The ore is a contact metamorphic deposit occurring in rocks of the Grenville series, on or near the contact between biotite gneiss and an overlying calcareous amphibolite(2,3). It consists chiefly of iron-bearing sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and minor amounts of chalcopyriteand argentite. The gangue minerals closely associated with the ore are calcite, quartz, and various lime-silicate minerals.

THIS paper is a description of the milling practice and metallurgy at the Moneta Porcupine mine, Timmins, Ontario. The results obtained with an all-cyanide circuit and later with flotation followed by cyanidation are described. The ?investigation which prompted the various changes in milling practice have also been dealt with. Moneta ore is possibly the most refractory now being milled in the Porcupine district. This is due to the ultra fine state in which the gold occurs and to its intimate association with pyrite. No doubt there is ore of similar characteristics on the neighbouring properties but it probably forms only a small portion of the tonnage being mined, whereas at Moneta the bulk of the ore requires an extremely fine grind to liberate the gold. The fineness to which an ore can be ground economically has gone far beyond what was thought to be the limit only a few years ago. Formerly, a set of standard screens was all that was required to measure the fineness to which an ore was ground. At present, the Haultain infrasizer is practically indispensable, and the nominal micron has become a familiar unit of measurement to all those dealing with the problems of fine grinding.

The crushing and concentration of ores, as Herbert Hoover commented in a footnote in De Re Metallica, stretches back at least 6000 years. During those years there have been continuing changes and improvements in mineral processing technology. It has expanded greatly in its ability to handle different types of minerals, and lower grade and more complex ores. Australia will be dependent on the mineral industry for the fore- seeable future and there will be continuing demands on the mill opera- tors to improve the technology with regard to efficiency, flexibility and costs. These demands will be met successfully in the future as they have been in the past. This Mill Operators' Conference is an important forum for assessing our present position and planning for the future.

NEPHELINE SYENITE is a feldspathic rock resembling granite in texture and hardness but it is white in colour and contains appreciable quantities of the mineral nepheline, the result of a silica deficiency. It is relatively common, with known occurrences in Russia, Scandinavia, India, Canada, United States, and other parts of the world. However, the particular deposit being mined at Nephton, Ontario, by American Nepheline Limited is unique in its remarkable uniformity and low content of iron bearing minerals, both qualities essential in a ceramic raw material. The orebody is a pear-shaped mass over five miles in length, up to a mile in width, rising in three prominent ridges as much as 300 feet above the surrounding lakestudded terrain. American Nepheline holdings, consisting of 2,200 acres, comprise some 85 per cent of the total mass.

The property of MacLeod-Cockshutt Gold Mines, Limited, is in the Little Long Lac area of the Thunder Bay Mining Division, Ontario, about four miles south of the Canadian National railway station of Geraldton. The town of Geraldton is about 170 miles east of Port Arthur and 22 miles west of Long Lac, which is on the main line of the Canadian National railway. The Trans-Canada highway passes through the property and during the winter season the road is maintained between Port Arthur and Long Lac. Electric power is supplied by the Hydro-Electric Commission of Ontario from their Cameron Falls plant and is distributed at 44,000 volts by a local transformer station. Early History The South orebody was discovered by diamond drilling in the spring of 1936. This is a porphyry contact orebody with major pyrite and minor arsenopyrite mineralization. Some gold is present in the 'free' state, but for the most part it is locked in the pyrite, with little or none in the arsenopyrite. Preliminary test work was based on comparing straight cyanidation with bulk flotation and cyanidation of the concentrates. The overall results by the two methods were found similar, but for economic reasons the flotation-cyanidation process was adopted. Before the mill came into operation, a new and entirely different type of orebody, consisting of massive sulphide lenses in banded iron formation, was discovered to the north of the existing workings. These bodies are an intricate mixture of pyrite and arsenopyrite, both carying gold.

THE property of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, is in Dome township, Red Lake area, northwestern Ontario, a hundred miles north of Kenora and close to the Manitoba border. 'Planes of Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Limited, serve the district daily, except Sundays, from Kenora, Ontario, and Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, passengers being trans-ported from Winnipeg to Lac du Bonnet by car. Freight is handled by the Patricia Transportation Company. It is brought in from Hudson, Ontario, on the Canadian National railway, in summer by water and in winter by tractor trains over the frozen lakes. The first staking on the property was done during the 'rush' of 1926 and 1927 by William M. Cochenour, and on April 30th, 1928, a syndicate was formed, taking in claims of W. M. Cochenour and Dan Willans and H. G. Young. Surface trenching was carried on almost continuously until 1934. In October, 1932, Ventures Limited took an option on the property, and in December of that year they carried out an extensive diamond drilling programme, but considering the results did not justify further work, they relinquished the option. In July, 1934, further surface work was carried out under the supervision of W. P. Mackle and, on the strength of his report, Noah Timmins Incorporated took an option on the property and agreed to make an initial expenditure of $100,000 on development work. This was carried out under the direction of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines and included the sinking of a shaft to a depth of 165 feet, establishment of a level at the 150-foot horizon, and some 1,900 lineal feet of drifting and cross-cutting. The results obtained from this work were not considered of sufficient promise and the option was terminated in August, 1935. Mr. Cochenour then approached Alex Mackenzie and associates, and the present Company, Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, was organized on April 9th, 1936, and sufficient money was raised to continue operations. Under the direction of W. P. Mackle, the shaft was deepened and a second level was established at the 275-foot horizon; but, due to several adverse reports by outside engineers, it was found impossible to raise sufficient money to carry on the work and operations were suspended in December, 1937. In January, 1939, an agreement was entered into with Gold Eagle Gold Mines for the milling in their plant of some Cochenour ore. A total of 4,959 tons was treated, and the results were so encouraging that further finances were raised by C. A. Gentles & Company, of Toronto. Following further development in the mine, it was decided to erect a mill. Construction was started on September 1st and the mill was turned over on November 29th. The first gold brick was poured on December 23rd.

"Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited is located at Joutel in North-Western Québec. The mine is about four miles north-west from the town on the left bank of the Harricana River. The present mining is 1,800 feet deep with an extensive geological development below this level.HISTORY The development of the ore body started sometimes in 1967 and then the operation ceased in 1969 and again reopened in 1973 due to higher prices of gold. During these periods of active development, a considerable metallurgical research has been done by different laboratories and research and design companies.The original capacities of the Mill differed as much as 30%. So did the concept of the ore treatment. The original design of the mill was for 200 TPD of ore with straight cyanidation. The problems with low gold extraction, high reagent consumption and poor filtration resulted in a decrease of the expected mill output to an initial 550 TPD with gold recoveries in the order of 40 to 60%.Although the studies and research work done on the ore varied, all of them had a common conclusion: a very fine grind is needed to expose gold. The mining method (sub-level blast hole mining) now provides the ore that differs from that on which the metallurgical test work was conducted and the original capacity calculations had been done.These variations in the concept consequently led to the conclusion that the size of gold is a determining factor for the process.Kilborn Engineering provided the original design with the Leslie Eng¬ineering completing the design. The metallurgical test work has been done by the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources, Lakefield Research of Canada, Kilborn Engineering and Sidam Incorporated.The new flotation section with secondary grinding has been designed and put into operation by the company in December 1975 with the results yet to be evaluated."

The gold treatment plant of Great Western Consolidated N.L. is at Bullfinch, Western Australia, 22 miles north of Southern Cross, which is 100 miles west of Kalgoorlie. A railway to Southern Cross connects the mine with the main Perth-Kalgoorlie line.The plant, which commenced operations on the 31st October, 1952, was, designed by Messrs. Alex: Stewart & Co. in consultation with the technical staff of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. to treat 1,000 long tons a day, made up of approximately equal parts of quarry oxidized ore and underground sulphide ore, by moderately coarse grinding (2-3 per cent plus 65 mesh Tyler) and straight cyanidation without straking. The design had to allow for future treatment of all sulphide ore at the rate of 40,000 tons per 28-day periodand to make provision for the possible later inclusion of preaeration treatment.The test work on .which design was based was done on representative development samples, the mine being divided into zones for this purpose, to check possible local variations from average treatment behaviour. Proposed mill feed mixtures were made up from time to time for complete ore dressing tests, which were conducted in the Western Mining Corporation laboratory at Kalgoorlie.The chief feature of the design was that the plant had to handle the extremes of very soft, poor settling and filtering oxidized ore and very hard, good settling and filtering sulphide ore. On one hand, crushers and mills had to be large enough to handle the sulphide ore and on the other, thickeners and filters had to be large enough to handle the oxidized ores.The design is marked by simplicity, the use of large units of equipment, and flexibility to cope with a variety of ores.

The Hill is a cyanidation plant with flotation and roasting. The grinding and treatment have at the present time a capacity of 1400 tons of ore per day and the precipitation has a capacity of 6000 tons per day. The ore is delivered by a 36" conveyor belt and tripper to 8 mill bins having a capacity of 6000 tons. The ore from these bins is discharged onto 20" gathering conveyor belts which are regulated with p.i.v. speed changers to control the belt weight. A weightometer determines the tonnage milled. The feed enters the 8' x 12' rod mill through a rubber lined chute and the product is discharged through a launder to a 7' rake classifier in closed circuit with 10' by 6' hardinge ball mill. Lime slurry is added at the rake classifier to give a strength of .30#/ton. The classifier sand is fed into the ball mill with a scoop feeder and the mill discharge flows in a launder back to the classifier. The classifier overflow is pumped to a 24' by 12' bowl classifier in closed circuit with a 8' by 15' regrind mill. The bowl classifier sands are fed to this mill and the mill discharge is pumped back to the bowl. The bowl overflow at 8% - 200 mesh is the final product from the grinding circuit.

The Kerr Addison process involves the cyanidation, flotation, and roasting of graphitic gold ore. The grinding and treatment section of the present mill has at the present time a capacity of 1400 stpd and the precipitation section has a capacity of 6000 stpd. The grind is maintained at 80%, -200 mesh, and a gold recovery of 92% is obtained in the cyanidation circuit. With flotation and roasting, the overall gold recovery is increased to 98%.

An account of milling "methods and costs at Mount Isa Mines Limited up to the year 1938 has been published. The present paper outlines the methods since adopted in the milling of lead-zinc ores and presents a description of the equipment now being provided for the milling of copper ore.The programme approved for the mining, milling and smelting of both lead-zinc and copper ores involves the milling 9f 50,000 tons of lead-:-zinc ore and 35,000 tons of copper ore per month.The crushed ores will be delivered to the surface from alternate levels through No. 2 Ore shaft and conveyed to their respective crude ore bins at the crushing plant. The ores will be crushed and milled in separate circuits in common buildings and the tailings will be stored on a common tailings dump. The water services to the two circuits will be separate.LEAD ZINC PLANTCrushing PlantThe crushing plant described in the previous paper was located adjacent to the Urquhart shaft. The crushing plant had grown considerably over the years by the addition of a 4ft. BY-mons shorthead crusher and a set of Traylor 72 in. x 20 in. crushing rolls and, whilst operating satisfactorily, was difficult to maintain and cramped in many places. Introduction The property of Pioneer Gold Mines of B. C., Limited, is located in the Lillooet mining district of British Columbia, on Cadwallader creek, 54 miles distant by motor road from Shalalth, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern railway. Milling by the present Company was commenced in 1924, a small amalgamation plant, consisting of a crusher, Bryan mill, and plates being operated until 1928. Tailing from this plant was impounded and later treated in the 100-ton continuous counter-current decantation cyanide plant which was erected during 1927-28 and placed in operation during May of 1928. A second cyanide plant, employing continuous counter-current decantation, having a nominal capacity of 200 tons, has been erected during the past few months and was put into operation during September of the present year. The ultimate capacity of the combined units of the present mill has not been determined, but it is expected to be much in excess of the rated capacity. The Ore The ore, as received at the mill, consists chiefly of quartz carrying free gold, with small amounts of pyrite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite in evidence, though probably amounting to less than one per cent of the total. Some gold is very closely associated with the sulphides. The country rock is a basic igneous rock, probably an augite diorite. Near the vein it is highly altered to sericite, which slimes readily on grinding, and does not settle very well. The quartz is of two types, clear and ribbon. In the latter, the ribbons, which are not much thicker than paper, consist of shattered sulphides. In crushing this ribbon quartz, breakage is often along the streaks, exposing these shattered faces to advantage in subsequent treatment. While gold is the metal for which the ore is mined, some silver is also present and is paid for by the mint. It is, however, unimportant from a commercial viewpoint. From the standpoint of crushing and grinding, the ore might be termed 'medium 'hard'.
