With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. In 1997, the Australian coal industry through Standards Australia committee MN-001 Coal and Coke recognised the need to produce a Standard giving some instruction on how to inspect and audit mechanical sampling systems. A Guide was developed by sampling subcommittee MN-001-04 and in 1999 the Standard was released as AS4264.5 æGuide to the Inspection of mechanical sampling systemsÆ Coal and Coke. Since that time the author has assisted with other committees in developing the Guide for other commodities such as concentrates and a generic standard for particulate materials. (AS4433.6 released 2000). The Coal and Coke guide is also currently a work item for ISO Standards. This paper is focused primarily on auditing and inspection procedures for coal mechanical sampling systems. It highlights the need for at least a three level inspection protocol where the operators manning the system maintain operational checks, the operators are regularly supervised by the company managing the system and once per year an independent auditor inspects the whole system to ensure compliance with design and standards. It does not cover short- and long-term maintenance of individual systems. With companies already certified to the ISO9000 series, this guide forms the framework to bring the operation and inspection of their mechanical sampling systems into line with these principles.

A DOZEN years or so ago, the general superintendent of our company, now the president, Mr. W. H. Clingerman, detailed me to make a study of the coal-washing problem and collect data, which threw me into contact with the best washery men of the country. and took me to those districts where the washing of coal for metallurgical purposes is carried out. I investigated many kinds of coal-cleaning schemes, made numerous tests on them, and collected voluminous data, yet I confess frankly that I have had but little practical washery experience and that little has been at the Middlefork washery of the United States Fuel Co. at Benton, Franklin Co., Ill., which was put in operation last fall. While this wash-cry installation may not be the "last word," I am quite sure it embodies some long steps in advance over older designs and constructions. From the washery man's standpoint, the removal of pyrites, or marcasite, a disulfide of iron, is the one vital problem, and the one productive of the most beneficial results, so far as elimination of sulfur is concerned. Sulfates and so-called organic sulfur occupy quite a secondary -position and are generally lost sight of in coal washing: The elimination of sulfur in coal in the past has usually been accomplished by jigging in water, but lately the use of concentrating tables has been employed with good success, and some mention may be made of the flotation process on fine coal, though hardly considered practicable. Coal washing, is rapidly coming into its own, due to the depletion of low-sulfur coals for coking purposes, and before many years we predict as careful attention being given to the design and construction of coal washeries, ,as is now being given to byproduct plants and other allied industries. Heretofore, coal washing has been considered only as an incidental and a necessary evil-instead of the big problem it is one worthy of the most careful study by men well trained along technical lines and capable of delving into the fundamental principles.

G. R. DELAMATER,* Steelton, Pa. (written discussion t)..-Under the heading, "Preparation of Coal," Mr. Campbell discusses the ad-visability of sizing the coal for the jigs. While I fully realize that conditions alter cases, my method at all times is to do everything possible to avoid sizing. It would be unwise for anyone to say that greater ash and sulfur reduction is impossible by sizing. The thing that can be questioned is, will the greater reduction be sufficient to counterbalance the greater cost? The same thing is true of the proper size of crushing for each individual proposition. In past years many washeries have been built and equipped for wash-ing two or more sizes, but I know of few instances where these plants were operated more than a year before sizing was abandoned. Perhaps in some of these cases this was clue to lack of sufficient development of such scheme of operation; yet I have found that most men engaged in this work, including myself, started into the work with a pretty well-fixed idea that sizing would be beneficial. But trials and tests showed that the mixed size washing is necessary for coals requiring crushing to 1 in. or less. Coal is of low value, compared with other minerals segregated by washing or concentration, for which reason simplicity must be the watchword: simplicity in the machine used to attain the separations of impurities from the coal, in the accessory plant equipment, and in its arrangement.

Mechanical loading, adopted long ago in open-pit, coal, and non-metal mines, was not used extensively in underground metal mines until the World War. In less than a decade it became standard practice in underground work in many mining districts. In 1924 the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines, published a bulletin entitled "Mechanical Underground Loading in Metal Mines," which was prepared by Charles E. van Barneveld, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines.

It is sufficiently correct to say that domestic solid fuel is universally hand fired and it is almost as correct to state that a very large proportion of hand-fired domestic fires are extremely inefficient and smoky. This is particularly true with raw bituminous coal for the fuel. The smokeless and efficient firing of domestic coal affords one of the most difficult problems confronting the combustion engineer. This is due to the universally constricted combustion space in the domestic furnace, the complete ignorance regarding the laws of combustion on the part of the average person, and the fact that the laws of efficient combustion are almost completely nullified under these conditions. It is well to familiarize ones self with these laws. These are: 1. The gradual introduction of the fuel to the furnace. 2. The admission and mixing of the right quantity of air with the coal gases. 3. A temperature high enough to permit complete combustion, and 4. A furnace space of volume sufficient to permit of the combustion gases and the oxygen getting together within the confines of the furnace. Even a casual inspection of the domestic heater will show that none of these essential things are present in proper degree, and this is the reason why the problem of domestic firing presents such difficulties. I have analyzed these conditions in a paper published by the Black Diamond, and which has already had wide distribution, so that I will not repeat the rather lengthy discussion in this paper. A survey of the entire field indicates very clearly that a reversal of existing methods and equipment must be had before any real improvement can be expected. It is my firm belief that in this instance above all others it is necessary to build the efficiency and smokelessness into the equipment in such a manner that its performance will be entirely independent of both skill and interest on the part of the operative. To attempt to educate every man, woman and child who periodically throws coal into a domestic furnace would be literally impossible. Much can be done, however, if we could teach the householder the simple essentials of alternate firing, which I have explained at length in the above mentioned paper. This would go a long way toward making the domestic furnace problem more satisfactory, as well as efficient and smokeless. Many will argue, and with good reason, that the domestic fuel should be prepared coke and with this I agree up to the limit imposed by the practical considerations of quantity production, price and the possibility of marketing the by-products. It will be obvious that if enough raw coal should be processed to provide all of the required domestic fuel that the amount of by-products recovered during the coking process would be so great that there would be little or no market at any price which would justify the manufacture of coke. If the by-products were wasted they would not only be a tremendous economic loss, but the price charged for the coke would probably be so high that the market would be limited, and this would defeat the very idea of the whole thing. Much can be done, however, in advancing the use of coke, but I believe that much more extensive and careful experimentization should be had in order to determine the right size and quality of coke for the various domestic furnaces. If coke were to be developed for extensive domestic consumption it is more than probable that the coking process should and could be stopped at a point where the volatile content of the coke would be sufficiently high to permit of prompt ignition and combustion in low draft installations. If the volatile content were from five to ten per cent a very different kind of coke would be produced from that which is now produced with perhaps one per cent of volatile. This property has been studied to characterize the strength a metallic material exhibits when it is machined so it can be regarded as its typical behaviour. As such, it may even be considered as an intrinsic material property. It is usually measured by an index called Coppini index, which is expressed by the ratio between the removed mass of a cutting tool caused by wear when it is used for machining and its initial one for a certain set of machining parameters. In this investigation, the tests were therefore conducted by an established set of parameters, namely feed rate, cutting and depth rates, in which the same wear mechanism took place in both ferrous alloys: AISI 4140 and AISI 316 steels. They were chosen based upon their increasing ordinary machinability indexes. The initial and final mass of the cutting tool were measured by an analytical scale with 0.01 mg precision. Cylindrical rods of 50-mm diameter were machined and the CI indexes showed a remarkable difference between them: 0.080 for the first steel and 0.049 for the second one, i.e., AISI 316 steel presented better machinability than the first one. It was then possible to conclude that this method presents good results in terms of both reproducibility and adequacy for machine shop conditions and it may be applied in a foreseeable future, mainly for metallic materials that have rather low machinability indices.

Good mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets is required to avoid breakage and excessive deformation during their handling and further processing. However, green balls with good resistance to handling are often too plastic, which impacts the bed permeability in induration furnaces. Measurements of plasticity, bed void fraction and green ball sphericity as well as bed permeability were carried out on various samples of green iron ore pellets having different mechanical strength. Results show that bed void fraction, sphericity and permeability all depend, to some extent, upon green ball mechanical strength (plasticity). Understanding and controlling the mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets would then help to maximize both the productivity of the induration process as well as the quality of fired pellets through a more stable firing process. Results of research work carried out at COREM, with the objective of improving green ball characterization methods, are presented in this paper.

Avoiding wafer breakage is a big challenge in the photovoltaic silicon industry, limiting production yield and further price reduction. Special fracture strength tests suitable for thin silicon solar wafers and solar cells, to be used in combination with Weibull statistics, finiteelement (FE) modelling and digital image correlation have been developed in order to study the mechanical stability of solar wafers. The results show that removal of the saw damage significantly increases the strength of crystalline silicon wafers. Furthermore, it was found that silicon crystallinity and the location where the wafer is extracted from the cast Si ingot have a significant effect on the strength, namely samples taken from the bottom of the ingot are 30% stronger than those taken from the top. The study also showed that there is a decrease in fracture strength when an anti-reflective SiNx coating is applied, which is caused by high thermal stresses.

INTRODUCTION Extruded briquettes (BREX) exhibit a set of unique properties when compared with briquettes formed by alternative methods. Brex generally have sufficient integrity right after extrusion to withstand the necessary handling and stockpiling and does not require any special means and tools for the green briquettes strength conservation. In a typical die without an ancillary cutting device green brex tend to have very high length to diameter (L/D) or length to section area ratios. For round hole dies the brex are typically 5to 6 times the diameters and even longer. Stiff-extrusion allows also for the very easy changing of the forming dies. Dies with different cross-sectional shapes of the brex (round, ovals, square, hollow structures and many other two dimensional shapes) are possible, and common. The results of our investigations show how these geometrical shape factors contribute to overall quality of the brex both in terms of strength and as new charge components in metallurgical furnaces and processes [2-4]

"Mechanical Thermal Expression (MTE) is a developing non-evaporative lignite dewatering technology. It has been shown to effectively dewater high moisture content in low rank coals via the application of mechanical force and thermal energy at elevated temperatures. In this paper, the dewatering behavior of Yunnan Xiaolongtang lignite during the MTE-process was studied. Furthermore, how variations in temperature and pressure during the MTE process affect the surface oxygen functional groups and pore structure were also discussed using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Increases in MTE temperature and pressure resulted in significant reductions in residual moisture content and moisture holding capacity, along with the increase of fixed carbon content and reductions of other elements content, especially oxygen content, which have been largely attributed to the destruction of the surface oxygen functional groups and porosity in lignite. The optimized technology conditions are temperature 150~220°C and pressure 7~10MPa. The residual moisture content of the lignite treated by MTE under the conditions of 200°C and 10MPa is decreased to 8%, while the dewatering rate exceeds 76 % and the calorific value approaches 22 MJ/kg. The experimental results offer a deeper understanding of the influence of process parameters on the lignite stuctures and properties. The reduction in residual moisture content, surface oxygen functional groups and pore volume under increasingly severe MTE conditions are suggestive of the structure changes that accompany increased coalification (rank) within the lignitic range."

VENTILATION in the iron mines of the Lake Superior region in nearly all cases is natural; that is, it is induced by the difference in elevation between different outlets in the mine and by the difference in temperature of the air in the mine and that outside. This difference in temperature is frequently augmented by placing a steampipe in the upcast shaft; but aside from this, artificial aids to ventilation have been rare until - recent years. In some of the older mines, as at the Cliffs Shaft mine at Ishpeming, Mich., in the 80's, fans have been used when there was only one opening to surface, but their use was abandoned as soon as a natural circulation of air started. In recent years, the Newport mine at Ironwood, Mich., was the first to use positive mechanical ventilation. The installation was not large enough, however, to give definite results, reliance being placed largely on natural ventilation. With the coming of warm weather in the spring of 1914, the necessity of positive mechanical ventilation at the Lake mine of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., became evident. The workings of the Lake mine are under the bed of old Lake Angeline, which was pumped out in 1894, and the mine had been in operation for 6 years prior to that date making a total of 26 years of continuous operation. The total production, up to 1914, amounted to over 8,000,000 tons. The ore was first mined by square-set rooms and pillars, but this was later changed to top slicing and caving. Both methods required the use of large amounts of timber, probably 80,000,000 board feet in all, practically all of which remained in the timber mat. The slow oxidation of this timber was one of the principal causes leading to the installation of mechanical ventilation. The mine was served by only one working shaft, called No. 4, a second outlet being provided by a raise to the surface from the old workings on the south side of the mine. This raise was the "down cast;" but it was very small and the drifts and raises leading to it were too small and crooked to permit an adequate amount of air to enter the mine, especially during the warmer weather. "Temporary mechanical ventilation is one of the fundamental requirements in guaranteeing a healthy atmosphere in underground construction works in order to protect the health of persons working on the site. It is therefore essential to conceive a system which meets the requirements of the whole of the worksite and for all phases of work which takes into account all aspects pertaining to its design, dimensioning, justification, installation, maintenance and validation. In doing so, the ventilation design and the selected apparatus to be installed shall meet with the degree of health protection and the quality of air of the worksite as defined by the legislation in force in France, through limiting the concentration of the different pollutants associated with the site activities. Consequently, when presenting a mechanical ventilation project, all of the participating parties and especially the contractor make a commitment to guarantee sufficient volumes (or airflow rates) of fresh (non-polluted and oxygenated) air and extracted (polluted) air in order to meet these limitations and maintain them in all conceivable site configurations. This article sets out the most important aspects of the implementation of a ventilation project from the initial design stage through to its application, discussing French legislation, ventilation principles, calculations and techniques with regards to underground construction sites. BASICS OF VENTILATION Mechanical ventilation studies are concerned with all of the site workstations and work phases which are sources of pollution and apply to all zones of the underground worksite with the goal of maintaining the concentration or composition of this pollution below the permitted levels and comply with the following three basic principles which are complementary to one another without being in contradiction. •,The first principle consists in eliminating or limiting as much as possible the emission of any polluting, irritant, or dangerous substances, by specifying appropriate construction techniques and equipment (use of electric motors, combustion engine equipment: filters, tanks, catalyzers, use of less polluting explosives, damping down dust with water or wetting products, damping down and diluting certain gases using water mists). •,The second principle is designed to capture residual polluting substances emitted close to the source in order to prevent them from spreading into the worksite atmosphere (extraction ventilation with ducting up to the source – upstream of the extractor fan – and use of downstream filters before expelling the polluted air to the exterior). •,The third principle involves accompanying the capture of the pollutants with additional blowing ventilation specific treatment of substances dissipated by and distant from the source of pollution (acceleration of the drift air flow in order to confine dust and better capture it, supply ventilation with ducting in order to dilute the gases emitted and discharge them to the exterior)."

In fact, many projects could not have been completed without its utilization. As underground projects became larger the use of mechanized wet-mix spraying gradually replaced manual dry-mix shotcrete applications. This paper details some of the reasons for that and provides information on the equipment and operational factors including safety and productivity required to successfully complete underground shotcrete projects.

"AbstractSatisfactory mine drilling operations depend on the good performance of the drilling machine, and of what may be called the drill set, i.e., the following four elements: bit, attachment, drill rod, and shank end. The field performances of these four elements in the drill set are analysed and their service lives are compared. The most .common causes of service failure are reviewed and possibilities of increasing service life are discussed.The laboratory methods now employed for the simulated service testing of tungsten carbide bits, conical push-on and threaded .types of attachments, drill rods, and shank ends are described, and some results are discussed. The objectives of the research programme now being carried out •on the above mentioned elements are outlined.A number of mines in British Columbia, northern Ontario, and northern Quebec have been visited, and, with the co-operation of the C.I.M. Branches in these areas, meetings with representatives of the mining and steel industries concerned have been held. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of biodegradable composites based on aliphatic-aromatic copolyester/polylatic acid blends (PBAT/PLA blends) reinforced by açaí seed fibers, an abundant byproduct of the açaí fruit agro industry. The biodegradable polymeric composites were prepared by melting extrusion process using a twin-screw extruder machine. The fibers removed from the açaí seed were used as the reinforcement and PBAT/PLA blends as the matrix. The influence of the açaí seed fibers addition on properties of composites was investigated by tensile and impact tests, SEM, DSC, and XRD analysis. Correlation between properties was discussed. In addition, açaí seed fibers characterization by SEM, XRD and WDXRF have also been carried out. The addition of açaí seed fibers on biodegradable PBAT/PLA blends showed that it is possible to get interesting property gains in biodegradable polymer by using waste from renewable sources.

INTRODUCTION As the world's population expands and nations struggle to better their relative position and standard of living, increased emphasis is being directed to the exploration and production of mineral resources, to the mitigation of natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and to geotechnical engineering projects such as high-level nuclear waste disposal, underground military facilities, and transportation tunnels. Several topics are common to all of these endeavors. One is the characterization of the rock mass in situ, including the definition of the initial environment (e.g., temperature, stress, etc.). A second is, depending upon the use of the underground or the desired result, the manner in which the boundary conditions or the environment are to be changed by man. Next, the physicochemical behavior of the rock mass must be measured, or inferred with uncertainty limits placed on this behavior, over the appropriate range of environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, chemistry, etc.) for the application proposed. And last, an appropriate, validated predictive model must be applied to estimate the rock mass response to the perturbation. In the period preceding about 1955, only relatively simple testing of soils and rocks was commonplace, partly because the environment (depth) to which these data were applied was not so extreme as it is at present and partly because less precise predictions of material response were acceptable. Only limited and relatively simple test data seemed to be needed to guide the engineering. At the present time and certainly in the future, as we extend our interaction with the earth's crust to greater depths and impose more extreme perturbations on it, we need a larger body of data, deter- mined under much more complex conditions, in order to make the required predictions. Ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers are widely used in the food packaging industry as gas barrier properties to oxygen, organic solvents, and food aromas. EVOH is very sensitive to moisture and its gas barrier ability deteriorates in high relative humidity conditions.This work aims to prepare flexible films based on melt-blending high density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene-vinyl alcohol (HDPE/EVOH/EVA blend) reinforced with graphene oxide (GO). The HDPE/ EVOH/EVA/GO flexible films were prepared by twin-screw extrusion and blown film extrusion processing. The flexible films samples were characterized by tensile tests, TG, DSC and FE-SEM analysis and the correlation between properties was discussed. In addition, the oxygen permeability tests were performed at 23 °C, 0 and 90% relative humidity using an OX-TRAN (MOCON Inc.).
