Longhole underground drilling has been carried on in the Tri-State area at various times over the past 35 years or more. W. F. Netzeband reported on this topic in 1926 and in 1930. More recently it has been found that in certain areas of the Picher field, Oklahoma, and under certain conditions, the jackleg or jumbo-mounted drifters can be used more economically and to greater advantage than surface churn drillholes for prospecting. To understand better the problems involved in Eagle-Picher's longhole prospecting program it would be helpful to cover the geologic criteria affecting it. Much has been written about the geology of the Picher field. A more complete description than that given here can be found in a recent paper by J. P. Lyden.

SCRIPTURE, statistics and imagination all were drawn upon by the speakers who acclaimed Daniel C. Jackling as recipient of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal for 1930. The award was made at a special dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, in New York, on Oct. 31. Lafayette Hanchett, old friend and associate, said that if it were his task to compress the life story of Daniel Jackling into a single sentence, he could find noth¬ing so appropriate as these words from the 22nd Chapter of Proverbs, "See'st thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before Kings." Mr. Jackling's diligence, according to the speaker, his love for his task, have been outstanding in his career. W. S. Boyd, now ranking official in the Jackling organization, cited amazing statistics as to the quantity of copper supplied to industry by the four "porphyry". coppers that are under Mr. Jackling's immediate direc¬tion, as well as by those that, in a sense, owe their existence to the pioneer work at Utah Copper. In the aggregate- 16,000,000,000 lb. of copper having an approximate value of $2,700,000,000 have been produced from disseminated ores since 1905; and of this total 42 per cent came from Utah and the Nevada group. Newcomb Carlton, president of the Western Union Telegraph Co., long an admirer of Mr. Jackling, adroitly drew a picture of a similar occasion in some 'foreign country. He imagined Mr. Jackling being raised to the peerage and whimsically addressed him as Sir Daniel, the Right Honorable Earl of Bingham!

THE Jacksonville plant of Humphreys Gold Corp., operating under leases from National Lead Co. and Rutile Mining Co. of Florida, recovers rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite from an ancient beach deposit containing about 2.5 pct of these minerals in combination. The location of the plant is unique, being situated about ten miles from the center of Jacksonville, Fla., surrounded by a thriving suburb. Two four-lane highways pass within 1 ½ miles of the plant. An expressway now under construction will pass over the tailing pile, within 500 ft of the mine office. The elevation at the plant site is approximately 50 ft above sea level. This is one of two mines producing titanium minerals and zircon in Florida. Another mine is also operated by Humphreys at Starke, about 50 miles southeast of Jacksonville. The Jacksonville deposit extends about six miles in a north-south direction, averaging approximately one half mile wide and twenty ft thick. Jade is a commercial term encompassing green, white, black or yellow-brown jadeitite and nephrite. Jadeitite consists of Na-rich pyroxene, whereas nephrite consists of prismatic to acicular amphiboles of the tremolite-actinolite series forming bundles that are randomly oriented and interlocked. Nephrite is tougher (harder to break) than jadeitite. Its fracture strength is about 200 MN/m2 whereas that of jadeitite is about 100 MN/m2. On the other hand, jadeitite has a higher hardness (7 compared to 6.5 on the Mohs scale). There are over fifty known nephrite occurrences in British Columbia (B.C.). These occurrences consist of individual blocks, boulder fields, talus blocks and in situ occurrences. Most of the in situ occurrences are lens or cigar shaped. They occur at, or near the contact of ultramafic/mafic rocks (mainly serpentinites) with cherts, and other metasedimentary or igneous felsic rocks of Mississippian to Jurassic oceanic terranes such as Cache Creek and Slide Mountain. These contacts are commonly interpreted as shear/fault related. In general, it is believed that the B.C. nephrite formed by metasomatic exchange between ultramafic and silica-bearing rocks. Impurities in B.C. nephrite are spinel group minerals (chromite, magnetite, picolite), diopside, uvarovite, titanite, chlorite, and talc. Jadeitite is slightly denser than nephrite and good quality material sinks in methyl iodine. There are no known jadeitite occurrences of economic interest in B.C., but there are at least four geographic areas where favorable lithologies, and metamorphic conditions (Pn) required for the formation of jadeitite coincide. These are Bridge River, Pinchi Lake, Dease Lake, and Jennings River. These areas are known to contain small concentrations of jadeite, or are characterized by blueschist or eclogite-grade metamorphic conditions. Rhodonite and pyroxmangite are MnSi03 polymorphs. These minerals are pyroxenoids and are macroscopically and microscopically very similar. For brevity, both are grouped together under the term "rhodonite". Most of the B.C. occurrences are hosted by late Paleozoic chert sequences and are lens shaped and concordant. The common association of rhodonite with iron formations, jasperoids, and/or volcanogenic sulphide deposits in southwestern B.C. permits the delineation of favorable horizons using magnetic or electro-magnetic geophysical methods. Geographic associations between manganese showings and sulphide deposits, and the hydrothermal chemical signature of the rhodonite occurrences from this area, suggest a genetic link between rhodonite and volcanogenic sulphide deposits. The typical rhodonite rocks consist of rhodonite, pyroxmangite, neotocite, black amorphous Mn-oxides, Mn-bearing garnet, ± epidote, ±chlorite, ±rhodochrosite, ± parakutnah-orite, ± Mn-bearing calcite, ± iron oxides and hydroxides. Garnet ± epidote forms yellow patches and layers within the rhodonite. Within some of the rhodonite occurrences, the garnet is altered to chlorite. Rhodonite-bearing rock is commonly cross cut by secondary manganese oxide veins, creating a characteristic web-like texture. In several localities, the contorted bedding planes are readily recognized. Mn-calcite and quartz also crosscut rhodonite. Rhodonite deposits hosted by high grade metamorphic rocks may contain pyroxmangite. Rhodonite is an important gemstone and ornamental stone in B.C., second only to nephrite in dollar value. B.C. nephrite and rhodonite have been used for the past 100 years in local jewelry and ornamental applications. More recently they have been used in table tops, and they have potential as upscale materials in tile-making. There may be a market for tiles made from lower grade materials that were previously extracted and stockpiled. The prices of nephrite, jadeitite, and rhodonite vary widely with quality, but gem and ornamental grade stones are relatively highly priced materials and they trade world-wide.

On June 26, 1988, the Jade Hydrothermal Field was discovered in the Okinawa Trough by the German RV Sonne. This research cruise has taken place within the scope of a German-Japanese cooperative project. The Okinawa Trough, located between the Ryukyu Island Chain and the east coast of China, is an active backarc-basin formed by extension within the continental lithosphere. The Ryukyu arc consists of a nonvolcanic outer arc, forming the main island chain and representing compressive highs of the Asian continental margin, and an inner arc with present-day volcanism in its northern part (Sibuet et al. 1988). The valleys and ridges of the trough are cut across by transverse faults, giving rise to younger volcanic intrusions. The Jade Hydrothermal Field was detected in a caldera-like structure. It is. located at about 27°15,0'N and 127°04,5'E with a maxi- mum water depth of about 1650 m. Data of heat flow measurements show a high anomaly in the cauldron basin with values ranging from around 100 to 800 mw/m2 (Halbach et al. 1989). Jafet, who discovered the gold in Nome, Alaska, in 1898, is going to tell the story of the discovery and of his life up there-a period of some 25 years. Now. Jafet, let's start this off well back of that-start it of1 when you were in Norway and, briefly, tell about when you were born and where you were born, anti so on. Lindeberg: My home in Norway was Varanger in Northern Norway. I was born and raised there and our industry was lumbering, cutting cordwood out of birch, sawing lumber with water power, fishing and dairy work. Q: Did you have anything to do with reindeer? Lindeberg: I never had anything to do with reindeer. But reindeer were raised in the nearby county, called Kautokeino, and they used to come to the coast in the summer, but we had nothing to do with the industry.

"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. This paper looks at the design of the Bentayga raisebore with subsequent back analysis using a LiDAR survey. A search for LiDAR raisebore assessment publications shows little work has been done on this subject. The paper examines the empirical design and RS2 modelling assessment with the bored condition. The high resolution of the LiDAR enabled mapping of weak structures that were located on the geotechnical investigation hole the orientations of which could not be determined. In addition, the scan showed were water ingress was occurring, potential stress overbreak and structural controls on stability. The LiDAR results were able to confirm no additional support work such as a shotcrete liner is necessary. The LiDAR results have been analysed in one metre increments as volume of overbreak against the empirical stability criteria (McCracken & Stacey 1989). The future use of LiDAR mapping over a range of rock mass conditions will provide quantification of the established empirical assessment improving its reliability. It is also a useful and accurate tool to monitor long term stability of a raisebore due to stress change or ore pass due to wear.

Jaguar Mining Inc. is implementing a 1.1 Mtpy, 7-year LOM gold project in the Iron Quadrangle (?Quadrilátero Ferrífero?), Brazil. Construction is on schedule and startup is programmed for Q2 2010. Mill feed grade averages 4.43 g/t and LOM gold production is estimated at 800,000 oz. The project entails two sulfide underground mines and three oxide/transition open pit mines. A state-of-the-art flotation/gravity concentration/CIP Plant has been designed based on testwork carried out by internationally recognized Canadian, U.S., and Brazilian laboratories. The mass recovery of the flotation section is only ca 10%, while its gold recovery is about 90%. Therefore, the CIP-ADR Plant will treat only 10% of the solids mass contained in the mill feed, while 90% will be fully cyanide-free material that will be partially used to feed a Backfill Plant. The leached tailings will be conveyed to a rather small tailings dam, whose 20- m3/h supernatant solution will be treated by a new electrolytic technology. The plant design contemplates a High Density Thickener for the cyanide-free rejects exceeding the backfill demand and a Regrinding Section before the Leaching Circuit. The estimated overall metallurgical recovery sits around 92%. This paper focus on the use of modern technologies to reduce costs, risks, and liabilities.

First evidence of bauxite in Jamaica resulted from an analysis of a soil sample collected at Bull Savannah in 1938 during a systematic local investigation of the island's soil types. Results of subsequent work indicated the possibility of the occurrence of deposits of commercial grade and dimensions, and in 1942, with a view to emergency development of the deposits as a war measure, the Jamaican Government declared all bauxite in the colony to be Crown property.

INDICATIVE of the practical importance of the achievement of James Aston , recipient of the Robert W. Hunt Medal for 1930, is the following prosaic item from the financial columns of a recent issue of a New York newspaper. "According to private advices from Pittsburgh, production costs of the A. M. Byers Co. for 1929 were reduced about $5 a ton by the use of the Aston process for making wrought iron pipe. A greater saving is anticipated for 1930, when more of the company?s requirements will be produced by the new method."

THE CONNECTING link between Phelps Dodge and the copper mines at Bisbee and Morenci was a Canadian-born mining engineer and metallurgist named James Douglas. Judged by almost any standard, Douglas was an extraordinary man. Like John Muir of the California red- woods, he had in his blood "the heather and bog juices of Scotland," and the rugged virtues of a singularly great race. His father, for whom he was named, was a graduate of Edinburgh University, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, and a man of rash and adventurous spirit. Extremely catholic in his intellectual interests and attainments, he was unusually skilled in his profession, certain-sometimes to the point of disastrous stubbornness--of his own judgments and decisions, careless of life or fortune where duty or moral issues were involved, and always deeply moved by the sufferings and misfortunes of his fellow men. ZAY JEFFRIES, who has been awarded the Douglas medal, established in 1922 by a group of the friends of the late James Douglas for distin-guished achievement in non-ferrous metallurgy, is one of the most notable graduates of the South Dakota School of Mines where he took his B. S. degree in 1910. The following year he was manager of the Ideal Mining Co., at Custer, and in 1911 he became instructor in metallurgy at the Case School of Applied Science, Cleve-land, where he remained until 1917, and in 1918 he took his D. Sc. degree at Harvard. During all this period he was engaged in experi-mental and consulting work for the Electric Railway Improvement Co., t h e Cleveland Steel Tool Co., the W. S. Tyler Co., the Lincoln Electric Co., the Aluminum Castings Co., and the Cleveland wire di-vision of the General Elec-tric Co. He is now en-gaged in general consulting work, especially for the Aluminum Co. of America, the General Electric Co., and the National Tube Co. He has contributed to the Transactions papers on the determination of grain size in metals (with A. H. Kline and E. B. Zimmer) LIV, 594; grain growth phenomena in metals, LVI, 571; the tungsten-molyb-denum equilibrium diagram and system of crystalliza-tion, LVI, 600; grain size inheritance in iron and carbon steel, LVIII, - 669; effect of temperature, de-formation and grain size on the mechanical properties of metals, LX, 474; metallography of tungsten, LX, 588; physical changes in iron and steel below the thermal critical range, LXIII, and LXVII, 56; and the trend in the science of metals, LXX, 303. In addition to participating freely in the discussion of other papers before the Institute he has found time to contribute notable papers to the Institute of Metals (Great Brit-ain), the principal technical journals, and to write a book on "The Science of Metals" in collaboration with R. S. Archer.

Carlisle: Jim Knapp, has been the good friend of hundreds-maybe thousands-of mining men in these western states in the last 40 or 50 years. Jim is going to talk about many of the mining camps of Nevada, where he has done plenty in the mining field during the last 50 years. Jim, for a starter, how did you happen to go to Nevada? Knapp: In the summer of 1902, two years after the discovery at Tonopah, the professor of mining at Stanford sent out myself and another student by the name of Joe Miller to make a report on the camp. We left San Francisco at 8 p.m., got to Reno the next morning, then took the train to Sodaville, arriving about 4:30 in the afternoon. The first man I met when I arrived at the Tonopah station was Tasker Oddie, a gentleman who later became the Govenor of the State and then a United States Senator. Before we got away from the stage station I also met S. H. Brady, the first mining engineer to put out his shingle in Tonopah. He afterwards became general manager of the West End Mining Co.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors of this Institute on Feb. 16, 1915, the 14 members of the Board present unanimously elected Professor Kemp an Honorary Member. The nomination of Professor Kemp was signed by 21 members of the Institute, none of whom are members of the Board of Directors, and recited his qualifications for Honorary Membership in the following terms: Professor Kemp graduated from Amherst College in the class of 1881, and from the School of Mines, Columbia University, in the class of 1884. After serving as instructor in geology in Cornell University for a few years he was called back to Columbia as adjunct professor in 1891, was made full professor the following year, and has since filled that office with dignity and honor. Among the first to recognize they importance of igneous rocks in the formation of orebodies, his studies have contributed greatly to that increase of knowledge of economic geology in which the Transactions of the Institute has had an influential part, and he is recognized both abroad and in this country as one of the most distinguished scholars in geology which America has produced. This recognition is evident in the honorary degrees of Sc. D. conferred on him by Amherst College in 1906, and LL. D. conferred by McGill University in 1913, as well as by election to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of. Christiania, and the Geological Society of. Stockholm. Professor Kemp was a Manager of the American Institute of Mining Engineers from 1896 to 1898, Vice-President from 1903 to 1904, a Director from 1905 to 1912, President and President of the Board of Directors in 1912, and Past President since that time. During these years he has labored loyally for the upbuilding of the Institute, serving on many committees, as well as in the offices enumerated. He has also served as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, and on the governing board of the Geological Society of America and the New York Botanical Gardens. His service is not confined, however, to these labors for the good of the profession and his contributions to exact knowledge of geology. In his almost 25 years as a professor in Columbia University there have come under his influence a great group of young men in whom he has inspired unflagging zeal in the search for truth, and to whom he has set an example of unselfish service. The value of such a service cannot be overestimated and in electing him to Honorary Membership the Institute would officially recognize the measure of appreciation which his professional colleagues have long accorded to him.

How did you get into mining; were you from a mining town or mining family? Not at all. I grew up in northwest Kansas. I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

A present the colleges and universities are struggling to meet the responsibilities placed upon them by the return of the veterans from the armed forces to the educational institutions as well as the youth graduating from the high schools. The problems of meeting these responsibilities are complex and upon the shoulders of the educational administrators lies much of the burden. One of those educators who is in the midst of this situation is James Rowland Cudworth, dean of the College of Engineering of the University of Alabama and Chairman of the Mineral Industry Education Division, AIME, both for 1946 and 1947. He was born at Norwich, Conn., on Sept. 23, 1897, and like his father before him went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1921. His studies at MIT were mainly in the fields of geological and mining engineering. Why a New Englander studies mining is anybody's guess, but it may be due to a love of traveling to far places which so many New Englanders do. After graduating tinder the famed Waldemar Lindgren. Jim trekked to Mexico where he worked at Pachuca for the Cia. Real del Monte and at Charcas with the American Smelting and Refining Co.
