Sprayed concrete has played an integral role in underground rock support for nearly a century. However, concrete is also considered to be one of the biggest environmental problems in construction and mining, largely because of the high carbon footprint of cement and aggregates production. This is driving the industry to find ways to cut concrete usage where possible. Improving sustainability by cutting concrete material consumption also reduces application time and costs. Improving concrete properties can make it possible to design thinner linings, but as awareness of safety and longer design lifetimes are driving developments in the opposite direction, it is not realistic to see this as a major factor in cutting concrete consumption. More accessible solutions are focusing on layer thickness control and minimising rebound and wastage. Digital technology and innovation offer excellent tools for improving sustainability while optimising other aspects of the spraying process at the same time. A digital layer thickness control system gives near-real-time information to the sprayer operator with full coverage of the sprayed surface. This enables the operator to achieve consistent layer thickness on the first pass, in comparison to the traditional methods of overspraying with the aim of achieving sufficient layer thickness, probe drilling after the concrete has set, and respraying at a later stage if needed. Operator competence is the single biggest variable in a successful sprayed concrete process, affecting rebound and wastage levels. Unfortunately, the learning curve to become a master sprayer is quite steep and training on a real sprayer and real concrete requires a significant amount of time and money. Training in a virtual reality (VR) environment enables operator training to be carried out in a low-risk environment and provides a way of measuring performance and assessing and certifying the operators. After the VR training period, a novice nozzle operator has the basic understanding to start working on a real sprayer, and an experienced nozzle operator can benefit from the possibility of assessing their performance.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

This paper will discuss several of the systems and processes that have been developed over the past few years, and are now being utilized by major mining companies on draglines in North America, Australia and South Africa. These technologies include production monitors and reporting systems, GPS navigation systems, structural integrity monitoring systems, structural analysis studies to increase the dragline RSLs, and inspection and response strategies. The use of these technologies provides significant increases in dragline production, and reduces maintenance costs and downtime. The question that needs to be asked is what value is there in monitoring? Increasing dragline productivity is dependent upon to two items with the overall goal being to maximize the number of bank cubic meters moved and to uncover more coal: 1) maximizing payload and 2) maximizing the number of cycles. If you do not measure and try to optimize the parameters that impact payload and number of cycles, there is very little chance that you can improve overall dragline productivity. These parameters are: Maximizing payload is dependent upon the following: ? Geology ? Blasting ? Monitor weighing accuracy ? Engage location ? Disengage Location ? Rigging ? Suspended load ? Bucket characteristics ? Operator skills ? Minimizing rehandle Maximizing the number of cycles depends upon maximizing digging time, and minimizing cycle and delay/down times by: ? Minimizing Operational Delays ? Minimizing Mechanical Delays ? Minimizing Idle time ? Minimizing Walking time ? Minimizing Fill Time ? Minimizing Swing Angle ? Maximizing Swing & Return Rates ? Minimizing Spot Time A third reason to monitor, conduct structural analysis studies, and have inspection strategies is to prevent catastrophic failures such as shown in the following photographs (figures 1 & 2).

The Highway 146 Bridge Expansion Project across the Clear Creek Channel in Houston, Texas was designed on driven precast concrete piles. However, during construction, the piles along one side of the bridge along the main channel encountered obstructions and couldn’t be installed. These obstructions turned out to be the remnants of a previous bridge foundation at this location, which was unknown to the designers since that bridge had been demolished 40 years ago. Those old foundations were massive 20 ft by 40 ft (6 m by 12 m) pile caps 11 ft (3.3 m) thick supported on precast concrete piles 37 to 55 ft (11 to 17 m) long. The foundation re-design for these locations involved installing a single 78 inch (2 m) diameter drilled shaft up to 125 ft (38 m) long to replace the originally planned driven pile supported pile cap. The drilled shafts would need to be installed within very tight tolerances since they were supporting a single bridge column directly above it. In addition to drilling through the obstructions, this work would need to be completed from barges in 30 ft (9 m) of water capable of dealing with both the current and tides affecting this area. The shafts were installed using a multi-step process. The first step involved coring a larger diameter 100 inch (2.5 m) hole through the reinforced concrete pile cap and removing the concrete inside. This was followed by the installation of a 72 ft (22 m) long permanent casing to and removing the soil and existing precast piles inside. Finally, the drilled shaft excavations were advanced to the completion depths (uncased) using bentonite slurry as the support fluid.

The Route 6 /10 10 Interchange Design/Build project, located in Providence, Rhode Island, involves the design and construction of five (5) new elevated bridge structures to replace and reconfigure the existing interchange and to provide a link between Route 10 northbound and Route 6 westbound. Due to site logistics, headroom restrictions, and depth to bedrock, 50 ton drilled micropiles installed in the deep medium dense sand strata were initially proposed as the deep foundation solution. Post project award, Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) performed various analyses and developed an alternate driven pile solution using steel Tapertube. The results of these analyses indicated that driven steel taper tube and steel pipe piles could develop greater capacities than the drilled micropiles in the granular soil layer, thereby reducing the number of foundation elements, decreasing construction schedule and providing a more cost effective foundation alternative. A comprehensive driven pile load test program was subsequently executed by GTR and the Design Build Team led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, to assess the performance of Tapertube and steel pipe piles, including pile drivability, load-deformation characteristics under static and dynamic loading, and to develop site-specific design parameters in two (2) distinct test areas. The test pile program included dynamic, static compression, tension and lateral load tests on each test pile. Load test measurements were automated with embedded Vibrating Wire Strain Gages (VWSG) to measure load transfer with depth. The execution and results of the successful pile load test program are presented and offer unique case study and valuable data for the use of Tapertube piles on deep foundation projects in the New England region INTRODUCTION The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Route 6 / Route 10 Interchange is located west of downtown Providence. Originally constructed in the 1950’s as a highway bypass around the historic Olneyville neighborhood, the interchange consists of a series of nine (9) bridges and ramps that serve as a vital east-west link between Interstate 295, 95 and 195. Based on recent bridge rating assessments, seven of the nine bridge structures are rated “structurally deficient”. With many bridge structures shored with temporary supports as many as 15 years ago, the interchange is in critical need of replacement. In 2018, RIDOT awarded the Route 6/10 Reconstruction Design-Build Project to 6/10 Constructors, Joint Venture. Led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, the Design Build team includes O&G Industries, DW White Construction, Aetna Bridge Co. and AECOM. The scope of work includes the replacement of the bridges and ramps, and will provide direct access from Route 10 northbound to Route 6 westbound. Valued at over $400M (US), this is currently the largest project awarded in RIDOT history.

"A world famous Wintersport resort in the Alpine planned to build a parking garage for more than 600 cars and busses situated between a torrent, a district road and the village.A nearly 200 m long building giving place for 6 parking levels and a maintenance level for busses and trucks is situated alongside a hill causing excavation height between 20 and 25 meters, which had to be secured. Due to restrictions – neighbours did not allow the client to drill anchors for retention – we designed a solution combining micropiles, strand anchors, shotcrete and nails as permanent earth retention not exceeding the space of 7 meters provided by the local street. Soil conditions were as challenging - reaching from backfill to moraine with boulders of more than 20 m³ volume – as the construction period of total 12 months for the whole project, which was opened mid of November 2015.The innovative solution outperformed the client´s project from the technical and commercial aspect and helped the contractor to save time and money.The design process with its difficulties as well as erection process is described in the following paper."

High stress conditions in weak rock masses lead to large deformation and breakdown of the rock material, while stress release events in hard rock mines can lead to sudden and usually violent rock failure. Typical support systems combine various reinforcement and support mechanisms to provide the required convergence control and retainment, but results are often mitigated by failure of surface liners, shotcrete and tendons. The paper reviews differing requirements of support and reinforcement for different failure types. In addition, the mechanical performance of a new reinforcing tendon is presented and analysed in view of the field requirements. Field tests results are presented.

Recently, the health of the cement industry has been threatened by the impact of environmental regulations, over-zealous state and federal agencies and radical environmental groups. Unfortunately, cement plant operations tend to trigger every environmental regulation and program promulgated, plus several programs designed specifically for the cement industry. These environmental burdens come at a time when the cement marketplace has been impacted by imports resulting in a situation where it has been difficult to increase prices to offset these increased environmental liabilities. The competitive world market forces the cement industry to seek creative ways to reduce costs. With additional major environmental programs coming down the pipe, like the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1980 and EPA regulation of cement kiln dust, the cement industry has attempted to try innovative supplements to cement manufacturing. The cement industry has found that using waste tires, biosolids and other solid wastes in the cement manufacturing process can reduce costs and plant emissions.

To that end designers and contractors are providing solutions that incorporate many unique features to expedite construction processes. In addition to timely delivery of the finished highway products, there is an increasing interest in making the initial investment in applying innovative technologies and thereby minimizing costly maintenance of highway projects. Accordingly, the aim of this paper (along with the accompanying paper) is to examine innovative technologies, developed mostly in Europe, that accelerate construction of highway, runway and railway embankment foundations. For each technology, a basic concept, installation technique(s), and design considerations are discussed, along with the case history of a real-world project. The Geotextile Encased Columns (GEC), AuGeo, and Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) are presented in Part I. Deep Mixing (DM), Mass stabilization, Cut-Mix-Injection (FMI), and Combined soil Stabilization with Vertical columns (CSV) technologies are discussed in Part II.

When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. This investigation addressed two products from Samarco?s desliming circuit, namely underflow of cleaning cyclones and underflow of desliming cyclones. The roughing cyclones receive the product of the grinding circuit. The underflow of the roughing cyclones feeds the cleaning cyclones and the overflow feeds the desliming cyclones. The underflows of cleaning and roughing cyclones are combined to constitute the feed of the flotation circuit. These fractions were characterized and a new process route was proposed. The size distributions of the two fractions are quite different. The desliming cyclones underflow presents higher amount of material passing 37 µm and of ultrafines as compared with the cleaning cyclones underflow. Laboratory scale flotation tests were performed in a mechanical machine aiming at comparing the performances of these products in the presence of the reagents employed in the concentrator. Pi-lot scale column flotation yielded enhanced iron recoveries for both products in comparison with those achieved in laboratory mechanical cells, without impairing the concentrate quality. The in-crease in recovery was more significant in the case of the cleaning cyclones underflow. These results suggest the use of columns in the flotation of this product aiming at increasing the overall iron recovery. Nevertheless the results also showed that the use of columns to float the cleaning cyclones underflow should also be taken into consideration. Despite the fact that this product requires a longer residence time in order that the required silica content in the concentrate is achieved, the indication is that higher levels of iron recoveries might be reached. The conclusion is that, due to the different behaviors of the two products, they should be processed in distinct circuits to maximize the iron recovery.

"This case study presents the design and construction of an integrated foundation and ground improvement solution utilizing deep soil mixing (DSM) and micropiles. 270 Brannan is a midrise office building in San Francisco that straddles the historic shoreline that was reclaimed in the 19th century. Subsurface conditions include shallow bedrock inland of the historic shoreline, and steeply dipping bedrock overlain by 60 feet of compressible deposits and liquefiable fill on the bay side. Project challenges included mitigating the liquefaction and lateral spreading hazards, addressing settlement concerns in the fill and the bay deposits, developing a cost-effective foundation support solution, assuring satisfactory seismic performance, and addressing construction restrictions with existing adjacent structures.DSM combined with micropiles was identified as the most cost-effective solution for the ground conditions. The DSM panels act both as a liquefaction mitigation mechanism and a foundation support system. Resistance to seismic overturning is provided by uplift-resisting micropiles. The DSM-micropile solution allows the use of efficient conventional spread footing foundations, integrating isolated micropile groups to anchor the shear walls. Successful installation of the system relied on a program of field testing to validate the design and conformance with the design criteria.INTRODUCTIONThe regular grid of surface streets within San Francisco’s South of Market (SOMA) district provides little evidence of the geotechnical complexities that lie below. In the late 1800s, sand dunes, bedrock hills, cliffs, marshes, and mud flats were flattened and filled, concealing their locations and characteristics. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire leveled many buildings in SOMA; new buildings were built after 1906 – often on top of rubble and debris from the structures that came before. Locally, the combination of natural geology and historical interventions can produce complex subsurface conditions that vary dramatically over short distances. This is particularly true at locations where tidal mudflats once met bedrock hills at the shore of San Francisco Bay.This case study describes an integrated foundation and ground improvement system implemented for a multistory “Class A” office building at a complex SOMA urban infill site. The system utilizes cement deep soil mixing (DSM) in combination with spread footings and micropiles to address a range of design and construction issues, including liquefaction and lateral spreading mitigation; consistency of earthquake ground motions; shallow foundation support; seismic uplift resistance; and avoidance of loading adjacent basement walls. The system was implemented by a technically-sophisticated owner through a process that included constructive collaborations between the project geotechnical engineer, structural engineer, general contractor, and specialty foundation and ground improvement contractor(s). The system is designed to cost-effectively provide a high level of seismic performance."

Gold, as a precious metal, has been sought for several thousand years. During this time economics have generally determined whether or not a deposit is minable. Today, few would spend $500.00 or $1,000.00 to produce one ounce of gold, yet most gold deposits currently being mined would have such costs if they were mined using the methods of the 18th century. Innovation has been the key to success in the world of mining. We are constantly having to look for new ways to mine deposits of lower grade, at greater depths, or with higher stripping ratios. The mining of placer gold deposits has always been subject to the volatile swings of the world price and the constant rise in production costs. The rise in costs is compounded by the drop in overall ore grades. Occasionally, a major technological innovation will dramatically reduce the costs of placer mining to allow previously marginal or unminable deposits to be mined at a profit. The continuous bucketline dredge was the last such major innovation in the gold placer mining. The continuous bucketline dredge has allowed large volumes of placer deposits to be picked up and processed on a continuous basis. Unfortunately, as the overall grade of the deposit declines, it becomes impossible to process enough ore to pay for the operating costs. There are many gold deposits around the world waiting for the next technological innovation that will allow them to be mined. One such deposit has been the Grey River deposit near Greymouth in New Zealand. A number of innovative techniques exist for solving heap leaching problems in special situations. Some of these techniques have been successfully applied and others await an opportunity for application. Discussions in this paper will deal with gold heap leaching under severe thermal conditions, in tropical rainfall circumstances, in the absence of fresh water, and in other situations removed from the ordinary. CLIMATIC CONSIDERATIONS The success or failure of precious metal dissolution operations may be strongly dependent upon proper attention to the influence of climate. A few examples are given in the following paragraphs.
