"It is expected that more than 10 Billion USD will be spent in Istanbul in coming years on tunnel boring especially with EPB-TBMs. However, the geology of Istanbul is very complex. Geologic formations changing from Paleozoic to Cenozoic ages cause tremendous problems due to frequently changed rock formations and andesite and diabase dykes. This paper summarizes a universal model to predict the performance of EPB-TBMs which is created upon the data base collected from several projects. The model first is based on predicting field specific energy and power consumed of TBMs using geo-mechanical properties of the excavated material and TBM diameter. Later net production rate is calculated using field specific energy and power consumed by TBM. A methodology to predict machine utilization factor permits to calculate daily advance rates. The validity of the model is tested using the data obtained from two recent metro tunnel projects. 1. INTRODUCTION It is expected that in a near future a total length of 400 km will be excavated in Istanbul in a complex geology. Selecting proper tunneling equipment, organizing an effective operational management with the right tunneling crew will be a major concern for an efficient scheduling of the future projects necessitating to create a model to estimate daily advance rates. Several TBM performance prediction models with few on the prediction of machine utilization time were realized in the past. However, there is quite limited number of research studies on predicting the performance of EPB TBMs. Specially predicting daily advance rates in complex geology, in mixed face, in fractured rocks, in transition zones etc. are in big concern (Namli et al. 2013, 2014). The first experiences in Istanbul with a gripper type TBM was a nightmare, roof collapses caused big delays in tunnel excavation (Bilgin 1993). A typical example to EPB-TBM was Kadikoy-Kozyatagi tunnel, changing TBM from opened mode to closed mode with few modifications on the cutterhead resulted a tremendous increase in the daily advance rates (Bilgin et al. 2009). The data collected from several tunnelling projects served a basis to create a model to predict daily advance rates of EPB TBMs. Within the frame of a research program the validity of the model was tested in Uskudar-Umraniye–Cekmekoy-Sancaktepe metro project and very recently in Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey project."

The applicability of SEM/EDS techniques to particle-by-particle analysis of respirable coal dust is evaluated. It is demonstrated that the correction procedures needed to account for the failure of most EDS systems to detect light elements (especially carbon) become unreliable for particles in the respirable size range (< 10 µm). Other serious limitations arise from x-ray counting errors for coal particles with low but significant mineral content and particle counting errors for liberated mineral matter.

This report focuses on minimum ore block sizes that are economically feasible to mine with the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method. In 1985, Homestake Mining Co. began a program to bring several small block VCR stopes on line. This report examines these experimental stopes, including design parameters, ground control, drill patterns, secondary blasting, and mucking. The paper describes a simplified method to chemically modify the surface of industrial mineral fillers. Four industrial mineral samples were taken from feedstock of commercial fine grinding operations. These samples were ground in bench scale ball mills and in the presence of various organic solvents. The ground products were measured for particle size distribution, surface area, surface chemistry by oil absorption and degree of organicJminera1 bonding. Where appropriate, the ground products were compared to commercially available surface modified, industrial mineral fillers.

The theoretical relations between the strain and stress Mohr circles make it possible to establish a relation between the internal friction angle [ ] and the Poisson&apos;s ratio (v) of rocks. The internal friction angle is related to the Poisson&apos;s ratio as Sin [-] = (1 - v)/(l + v). This relation gives lower friction angle values than the triaxial Mohr envelopes and higher values than those given by surface sliding friction tests.

A methodology is presented for the spreadsheet solution of separation processing networks. With the methodology developed, a spreadsheet grid is used to represent networks both with and without recycle loops. Laboratory leaching experiments were conducted to extract potassium from glauconitic sandstone, and the effects of important variables were studied. The reduced time plot (RTP) for all of the variables obtained from the experimental data has been quantified by this simple equation: R = 100 (1 - exp (-0.693 *(T/T50)0.605) The time required for 50% extraction (T50) has been correlated by a regression equation to variables such as acid strength, temperature, fluorite: glauconite ratio and % solids. Both of these equations were used to predict the extraction percentage at different process-variable levels. In addition, several other experiments were conducted at arbitrary levels of the variables to verify the equations developed.

Concrete pump is commonly used to transport paste and high-density backfill over relatively long horizontal distances. However, since the investment in concrete-pump and its operating cost are quite high, the application of paste backfill is limited in China. For seeking an alternative paste backfill technology, squeezed-transport technique and equipment has been developed. The new technology has been adopted at Tonglushan Copper Mine of Daye Nonferrous Metals Corp for overcoming a difficulty of long-distance transportation of high-density cemented tailings fill. It proved to be an alternative paste backfill method with simple backfill system, saving investment and low operating costs.

Methanometers with catalytic heat- of-combustion sensors used in coal mines today will read low for flammable gases when oxygen (0,) concentrations are low or when methane (CH,) concentrations are greater than 10%. Thus, these methanometers may not be reliable during operations such as fire fighting or recovery of sealed mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a total flammable gas detector (TFGD) to measure CH, at concentrations up to 100% and to measure flammable gases in low 0, concentrations. This paper describes the operation and construction of the TFGD and discusses measurements of flammable mine gases obtained from a mine in western Pennsylvania.

Increased clearance was required in two railroad tunnels that were built about the time of the Civil War. Clearance infringements, whether they be excavation tights or caused by ice accumulation, reduce tunnel serviceability. Achieving increased clearance often means disturbing the ground and old ground support structures. Access and transportation needs dictate how and when the work can be carried out, and strongly influence the design approach and the methods used by the contractor to execute the work. This paper explores the pertinent considerations of the owner, the designer, the field inspection team, and the contractor in bringing this project to a successful conclusion.

This paper presents the findings of a study on roof bolter&apos;s hazard exposure. A "microanalysis" of accident data was combined with ergonomic observations of roof bolter operators to categorize bolting-related injuries, and, from this, a checklist was constructed. Bolting-related problems were identified as situations that could expose bolter operators to hazards. Approaches to avoid these situations were applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in root bolting operations. The research emphasized the importance of analyzing worker behaviors in the context of mining situations and equipment-design problems that lead to human-error accidents.

Improvements in today&apos;s maintenance practices are mandatory as more complex and productive machines evolve in the mining industry. By keeping machine reliability high through improved maintenance procedures, overall mining costs can be reduced. The Bureau of Mines is investigating diagnostic maintenance systems for underground mining machinery. A hydraulic expert diagnostic system and an electric motor predictive diagnostic system have been designed and installed on a Joy 16CM continuous miner. An electrical diagnostic system has been designed and installed on a Joy 14CM continuous miner. Each system is functionally described and the relative merits of expert diagnostic systems versus algorithmic diagnostic systems are discussed.

The handling of fine coal is an important issue for both the coal and utility industries. Reconstitution of fine coal in the form of pellets or briquettes would be desirable if it could be done economically. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three binders, asphalt-emulsion, corn starch and Brewex, informing pellets of ultrafine clean coal. It was found that asphalt-emulsion and corn starch were not effective binders. However, the use of Brewex resulted in pellets that exceeded all of the minimum quality requirements for coal pellets.
