The effect of reaction conditions on the desulphurization of oil sand coke residues has been studied. The variables investigated were temperature, reaction time, heat transfer resistance, and mode of caustic soda addition. The results obtained show that oil sand coke desulphurization increases with temperature, reaction time, and heat transfer rate. In an oxidative environment, coke combustion during molten caustic leaching (MCL) commences at temperatures above 500°C. The mode of caustic addition has no effect on coke desulphurization.

By-products from mining and processing plants and coal-fired power plants are being utilized more as valuable resources in Virginia. Mining-related by- products are divided into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation, and those generated from mineral processing or from industrial plants. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where by-products have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include coal- combustion products (fly ash and bottom ash), lime-kiln dust, flue-gas-desulfurization residue, rock fines, magnetite, Cold Spring clay (kaolin), Austinville tailings, soapstone rock, and calcium-carbonate paste. Some of these by-products have never been utilized, although several ideas have been investigated over the years.

The Berkeley pit-lake was sampled during two seasons, fall 1997 and spring 1998, from the surface to the bottom. Various parameters were measured to determine what effect the seasons had on the water column. It was determined that a seasonal turnover did occur between the fall and the spring sampling; however, the depth of mixing due to turnover could not be established. Trends were observed which suggested that microbial activity was altering the iron speciation at depth, and subsequently masking the extent of mixing. Various trace metals were removed from the surface water by either co-precipitation with schwertmannite or adsorption.

In this chapter, a review is made of the various stages of an exploration program, mineral rights acquisition methods and the partners involved in an agreement, the after- tax cash flow approach using present value discounting principles, the establishment of computerized financial models for assistance during the negotiating stages for a mineral property, and the various evaluation techniques and their specific applications during different phases of an exploration program. A set of examples is shown encompassing the initial target-seeking stages to the ultimate feasibility study stage.

The conversion of nickel and cobalt to the water-soluble sulphates forms the basis of some of the many methods of recovering these metals from their oxide and silicate ores. The applicability of these sulphation processes to a range of Australian oxidized ores is discussed. The chemical and hence mineralogical composition of the ores is shown to have a major influence on the degree of nickel and cobalt extraction. Different sulphation processes are compared, taking into account the influence of ore composition, and considering effects on reagent consumption and on subsequent metal recovery processes.

Gold metallurgy has advanced remarkably over the last decade. Even more significant progress will be made over the next five years, particularly in the application of advanced comminution techniques and control, preconcentration (flotation, ore sorting and coal gold agglomeration), enhancement of cyanide leaching technology, non- cyanide leaching, treatment of refractory ores and concentrates, and improved recovery systems. Carbon adsorption processes have become standard practice for ores with relatively high gold/silver ratios, but ion exchange potentially offers distinct advantages and has recently been demonstrated to perform better in at least one application. Even in the established zinc precipitation and CIP processes several important practical improvements are emerging as experience is gained at the ever increasing number of operating plants. Improved process control and reduction of reagent consumption costs are two important goals of industry at this time.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. As coal mining evolves in this country, underground coal is being mined at greater depth and under more difficult conditions than in the past. At the same time, economic conditions make it necessary to mine more efficiently and economically. As a result, pressures on mining companies arise on two fronts and make the job of mining coal underground very difficult. Recent improvements that have been made in health, safety and productivity have come about primarily due to improvements in existing technology and better management of all the production resources. However, this trend can continue only so far and thus innovation will be needed to continue the improvement. This paper deals with a concept that, on the surface, appears to be more efficient in terms of the costs to provide ventilation. The resulting design is oriented toward increasing the ventilation efficiency through use of a unidirectional ventilation plan but it also promises to increase recovery and decrease the requirements for development entries. To analyze this ventilation concept, two mine layouts with a similar production schedule were planned in a hypothetical 1.83 m (6 ft) coal seam. The first alternative analyzed uses a traditional approach to ventilation with centrally located shafts and a bidirectional ventilation pattern. Using this system, it is necessary to use large-diameter shafts and a large number of main entries. Using the same assumptions on ventilation requirements, the second alternative utilizes unidirectional ventilation whenever possible, a smaller number of main entries and small-diameter blind-bored shafts in the bleeder areas. The comparative analysis is performed using PSU/TDMVS, a computer network analysis program that is capable of determining the ventilation power requirements at any time in the mine life and converting the costs to a present value. The economic analysis is then completed by including the shaft-sinking and entry-driving costs and the costs associated with the recovery of coal that are directly related to the change in the ventilation system. The results are summarized on a present-value basis.

The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

The paste fill system at BHP Cannington's underground silver-lead-zinc mine is described. The paste fill system has been operational since December 1997 and is the first of its type in Australia. Technical and operational learnings since stope filling commenced are presented. Topics described include plant performance, reticulation system design and construction, pipe wear and failure, rheology, in situ performance and laboratory testing.

The grinding media materials for the mining industry require corrosion and abrasion resistance properties not only to minimize the wear but also to improve the flotation recoveries of sulfide minerals. The media wear mechanisms and the factors influencing the grinding ball wear during grinding are discussed with respect to abrasion, corrosion and impact wear of grinding media materials. Interactions between the grinding media and sulfide minerals in a ball mill adversely affect the floatabilities of the ground minerals. The possible galvanic interactions between grinding medium-mineral and their effects on the flotation responses of sulfides are also reviewed. The selection criteria for alloy composition that reduces the overall wear along with adverse effects on flotation are brought out.

Understanding and managing risk is of increasing concern for the mining industry. Although methods exist to model geologic uncertainty based on stochastic modeling techniques and multiple realizations, there are few approaches to manage this geologic uncertainty in pit optimization. Block values can be penalized if the block uncertainty is high, but the goal here is to consider the reserve risk within the pit. This paper presents an approach for pit optimization that considers all realizations simultaneously with a heuristic pit optimizer. The heuristic algorithm maximizes value and also penalizes reserve risk. The inclusion of multiple realizations provides access to the risk or uncertainty in the total pit value. Considering this information permits an active risk management approach that can manage the uncertainty in the reserves within the entire pit.

Chemical zoning studies of mineralization can be useful in guiding exploration efforts. They permit one to determine the limits of mineralization and to correlate mineralized intervals in drill holes. Fahlore minerals are well suited for zoning studies because they are common minerals found in a variety of deposits, exhibit chemical diversity, and record the chemical evolution of migrating hydrothermal fluids. Zoning information in the form of metal ratios preserved in fahlore minerals was used to determine ore body limits in the Orcopampa precious metal system, Peru, and to correlate between multiple ore horizons in a sediment hosted massive sulfide (SHMS) currently under investigation. The current generations of electron microprobes provide the most efficient, accurate and economic way to analyze the tens to hundreds of sample required to successfully describe and use zoning information at the mine scale.

In May, 1966, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a program to encourage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national security. Upon learning of the copper production expansion program, Duval Corporation entered into negotiations with GSA for development of the Sierrita copper-molybdenum property under the program. Agreements between the GSA and Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, were concluded in 1967, with the Sierrita Concentrator beginning operation in 1970 at a designed capacity of 72,000 STPD. Subsequent additions and modifications have expanded capacity to 90,000 STPD. This property, located approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, represents an investment including working capital of about $200 million. These funds were provided from an $83 million loan from GSA, repayable in copper valued at 38 cents per pound, $48.75 million of bank loans subject to U. S. In recent times, smelter off gases treatment plants have become more efficient and environmentally friendly. Where in the past it was acceptable to process only high strength, treatable furnace gases, new smelters must now treat primary gases and abate dust and SO2 from secondary gases: Processing smelter gases can present some interesting challenges. Some equipment can see varying concentrations of sulfuric acid, up to the boiling point, with a periodic table of contaminates thrown in for good measure. Treating weaker secondary gases have, in the past, been cost prohibitive. Nowadays, new technology, like physical absorption or catalytic carbon, show promise for economically treating low strength secondary gases. Modem smelters do a much better job of treating the SO2 laden gases generated by the smelting process but significant challenges remain.

Autocad has become the standard graphics package for the mining industry as well as the general engineering profession. This paper discusses the evolution that mine planning has undergone and the trend toward compatibility with Autocad. It discusses the common use of Autocad in mine planning and systems modeling using a program called ICAMPS developed by Ohio Automation. As an example of its usefulness the use of the interactive ventilation network modeling capabilities are discussed specifically and are applied to mine planning at an operating trona mine. The ventilation analysis feature of the ICAMPS software works from Autocad drawing of the as-mined map and the projected mine layout. Using on-screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of Autocad, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the branch parameters alongside each branch. The software calculates the length of airways, computes the branch resistances where needed, converts the input into the required format and passes this information as input data along to the PENNVEN simulation program written by the Pennsylvania state University. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation schematic displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.

The northern spur of the Bakhuis Mountains contains bauxite deposits on a dissected planation level, a region formerly indicated as the Adampada-Kabalebo area. Iron-rich laterites are ubiquitous on all more or less flat and horizontal to moderately sloping interfluves and planation levels. The known aluminous laterites and bauxites are restricted to those laterites that have relatively leucocratic and silica-poor parent rocks. The whole area is underlain by high-metamorphic Precambrian. In the northern half of the Guiana Shield at least four Cainozoic planation levels can be distinguished. The bauxite and aluminous laterite deposits are related to the oldest, Early Tertiary level. These deposits, occupying the highest positions in the present day landscape, show the destructive influence of post-laterite weathering, erosion and denud- ation; they are erosion remnants and as such are of irregular thickness, grade and shape. Consequently, exact mineable tonnages can only be determined after intensive and detailed sampling and evaluation, taking into account the latest technical and economic parameters. The bauxite potential of the region is negatively influ- enced by the complicated uplift history of the Bakhuis horst, and positively by the presence of suitable parent rock and possibly more than one phase of bauxitization.

Introduction The need for water is fundamental to every minerals processing operation. Though this may sound rather elementary, it is one area that cannot be over- looked. Frank C. Quinn in his paper entitled "Water Is Water Is Water" (1967) said, "but it isn't as simple as that. Very often research is slowed down and production is hampered because of a lack of appreciation for the behavior of water." The quantity of water needed for any operation is determined from bench and pilot plant testing. The quality required by the process for both fresh and reuse water is also established during these two testing phases. Quinn's statements are true whether the process involves the paper industry, the minerals industry, or any other industry. It is not the author's intent to cover water quality, quantity, or re- cycle in specific terms, but to provide the reader with a general outline of the topic with reference to several valuable sources of information. The first part of the chapter will cover several of the areas that have been de- tailed by others and also provide a list of reference sources. The references at the end of the chapter are not all inclusive but will provide a good starting point. In the second part of the chapter, a detailed description, with flowsheet illustrations, is pro- vided on the evolution of the reclaim (reuse) water system at the Tilden concentrator. Mineral Industry Water Needs Beresford and Edler (1978) surmnarized the minerals industry's need for water this way: "minerals are necessary to a modern complex technological society. The minerals industry, while its water needs are relatively minor compared to large users such as agriculture, nevertheless requires a large quantity of water to carry out daily operations from mining to final product refining." In 1973 total water use in the United States was estimated at 15.14 billion cubic meters (4 trillion gallons) for the minerals industry. Of this, about 69% was recirculated within the system. In 1982 Watt and Horton stated that the percent of recycled water in the minerals industry had improved to 73%, showing the minerals industry is an efficient user of water and that steady improvement in water recycling is something the minerals industry can look to with pride. The percent of water needed by the United States' minerals industry was estimated in 1962 to be about 2% of the total water required by industry

Valuations can be molded, twisted and misinterpreted. Cases of spurious scope setting; limits to the information or access by the valuer; difficulties with the lack of comparative valuations; inappropriate valuation methods and outright speculations are described. None should be accepted by an experienced, independent minerals valuer. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (TheAusIMM) is working on a Valmin Code for which a Manual of Best Practice and Valuation Guidelines may be developed.
