INTRODUCTION Square-set timbering of stopes developed from stull support methods because veins too wide for stulling were being mined. In general, the void caused by the stoping of the ore is filled with a system of interlocking timbers. Timber framework supports the wall rock, the mining operations, and provides access. A timbered stoping method can be used in all widths of veins at any dip. The timbering can be normal and parallel to the planes of the walls or at angles to these planes. Irregularly shaped ore bodies can be worked by timbered methods. Pinching or swelling of the vein will not adversely affect the method. Timbered stoping is especially advanta¬geous where weak ground is encountered in the vein or the wall rock. The ground is unsupported only until timber sets are stood. These stopes can be filled with sand or waste when desirable. The customary method of developing a square-set timbered stope with haulage drifts above and below and timbered raises on each endline is shown in Fig. 1. The drifts are timbered the full stoping length. The raises have two compartments with the manway and timber slide in one compartment and the chute in the other. The drifts and the raises cannot be widely spaced as handling timbers is an important consideration. Stoping can begin immediately above the drift timber and continue in both directions and upward from the raise. Breasting down each blast round for only one timber set laterally is the common practice. The blasted ore falls to a lower floor where it is slushed or trammed to the chute. Drilling can proceed on the upper floor while broken ore is being removed from the stope. As shown in Fig. 2, square-set timbering may be used in cut-and-fill stopes to support the back and walls until fill is added. There are various ways of developing an ore block for timbered stoping. Fig. 3 depicts the situation for the main haulage in the vein with an intermediate drift separated from it by a sill pillar. The ore is slushed into the chute connecting the two drifts. The situation in Fig. 4 is identical to that in Fig. 3 except that no sill pillar is used. In Fig. 5, the haulage drift development is done in the footwall with crosscuts driven to intersect the ore body. The intermediate drift development is above the crosscuts with a minimal sill pillar. The main bottleneck in timbered stoping is in the timbering process. Drilling in the stope is generally held up while timbering is done. Two or three men are re¬quired to do the timbering and an additional one or two men are needed to transport and raise or lower the tim¬ber. Good organization is essential to timbering. Skill must be exercised in standing the timber to support the ground and still maintain good production. The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. It measures 200 x 200 mm (8- x 8-in.) inside (instead of 300 x 300 mm or 12 x 12 in. in Bond ball mill). Just like the Bond

"Underground refuge alternatives (RAs) require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the RA. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that PRVs prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5 in H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. Research to date by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that the design and implementation of PRVs used in RAs has not yet had sufficient performance analysis or technical development. In response to this need, NIOSH tested a variety of PRVs using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork, and various sensors to determine if subject PRVs meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics including opening pressure and flow rate were measured for five different PRVs under a variety of conditions. Subject PRVs included two off-the-shelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place (BIP) RAs, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel RA and is currently being used in some BIP RAs. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.8 to 6.1 in H2O) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/min (683 SCFM). INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement [1]. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed NIOSH to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5.0 in. H2O), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor [2]."

Defining Productivity Productivity is a principal concern to all organizations - industrial, commercial, government, and academic. As a ratio of output to input, productivity measures the efficiency of an industrial process, much as thermodynamic efficiency measures the useful work obtained from the available energy consumed. However, there is one important difference. Whereas thermodynamic efficiency is a dimensionless a ratio of energies, productivity output and input are usually measured in different physical units. Nevertheless, the resulting ratio is a normalized expression for unit of output per unit of input to the process. In the early days of coal, mining was essentially a hand loading operation. There was little expenditure of alternative forms of energy within the process. Loading required expenditures of human energy on the order of 1.2 MJ/t (1,000 Btu per st). And if we accept the conventional value "you load 16 tons," the output to input ratio is 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift. In energy terms, it is on the order of 116 MJ/t (100,000 Btu per st) produced per labor Btu expended. However, the latter measure of efficiency was not meaningful in economic terms, while the 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift was significant. Since labor was the principal component of cost, it represented a direct relationship to the cost of production: [ ] Furthermore, when workers were paid directly on the basis of tons produced, the labor cost per ton was specified directly by this rate. With the introduction of mechanized loading, significant increases in productivity occurred, when measured on the basis of tons per manshift. Electric power consumed about 11.6-116 MJ/t (10,000-100,000 Btu per st). This makes the 29-GJ/t (25 million Btu per st) coal output/input ratio between 100 and 1,000. That is one or two orders of magnitude lower than hand loading. However, electric energy was quite inexpensive compared to labor, which made the mechanization economically efficient. The accepted productivity measure continued to be tons per manshift. This measure includes some of the effects of mechanization: namely, the additional manpower needed to maintain the machines and support the equipment that uses electrical energy. However, it does not consider the capital and operating costs that relate to mechanized equipment. As a result, the concept of tons per machine-shift has emerged as an accepted measure of shift productivity. The only appropriate measure that encorporates the productivity of men and machines is an economic one. The output is the tonnage per shift and the impact is the cost per shift. [ ] This is simply the inverse of the cost per ton. In addition, much flexibility is available in allo¬cating costs to the three categories. This adds a level of intangibility to the measure. The amount of information needed to obtain all of the required costs is appreciable compared to the simple matter of counting tons and workers. Furthermore, financial information relating to production costs is closely held by mining companies, so historical statistics on economic productivity are not publicly available. To extend the concept further, consider the value of the tonnage produced, to obtain a dimensionless ($/$) measure of economic productivity.

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. "Frac sand is industrial silica sand much like glass, foundry, filtration and blast sand. The sand must meet certain specifications set forth by the industry that consumes the product. The production and consumption of frac sand has experienced record growth in the last 10 years because of new oil and gas drilling, new horizontal well drilling, multi-stage fracturing and the stimulation of older wells that have little or no production. Frac sand is needed to “prop open” the fractures in the rock reservoirs to allow oil and gas to flow out more freely.According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the estimated production of frac sand in 2015 was 71 percent of the total production of industrial silica sand or 67.4 Mt (74.3 million st). This is a decrease of about 12 percent from 2014. However, the silica sand industry and other industry sources estimate only 50 Mt (55 million st) of frac sand were produced in 2015. In recent years both the USGS and industry studies have been very close in estimating the production of frac sand but with the recent downturn in frac sand production, perhaps, reporting to the USGS was not as accurate. These discrepancies may be that the USGS statistics are based on voluntary reporting by the industry and some companies report their approximate production, others may not. It is always difficult to obtain accurate production figures of any industrial mineral or construction aggregate operation as most companies tend to keep those figures somewhat confidential. It is certainly accurate to report that the production of frac sand had decreased since the last quarter of 2014 and through 2015. The oversupply of oil and natural gas has led to this decline in frac sand usage. Oversupply has idled drilling rigs and well completion activities. World Oil Magazine reports that 2015 was the worst year for rigs in a quarter century. The only wells being completed are those that have contract agreements to do so, others have been capped. Very few new wells are being drilled. Since about 98 percent of well completion is sand and water, the sand supply has caught up with the demand. There are some bright spots in the “oil patch” as the Permian Basin in Texas and the Woodford Shale in Oklahoma have kept pace somewhat with drilling and completion. It has been reported that the frac sand producers in the Brady-Voca, TX area are producing to nearly capacity. The northern frac sand producers like those in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota are feeling the downturn because of the cost of shipping sand to these moderately active basins and plays. The “rule of thumb” is that freight is 2/3 and sand is 1/3 the cost."

The Los Angeles County Transportation Authority’s Purple Line Extension Phase 1 is a $3.12 billion (USD) design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue and extending west 3.92 miles under Wilshire Boulevard and terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire/La Cienega Station. The project alignment runs through the heart of the world famous La Brea Tar Pits and one of the world’s largest urban oil elds. This paper presents a case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to achieve successful construction of the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment. Further, this paper outlines the proactive partnership between the owner, Los Angeles County Metro (Metro), the Design Builder, Skanska-Traylor-Shea oint enture (STS), and Southwest Geophysics who provided the geophysical services. Specically, the project included background review of historic site data (e.g., oil eld maps, building foundation plans, historic aerial photographs, etc.), geophysical demonstration testing to ascertain the capability of borehole magnetics to detect oil wells, directional drilling of thousands of feet of horizontal and vertical boreholes, collection of high resolution magnetic gradiometer data along vertically and horizontally cased boreholes as well as the collection of surface magnetometer data, discovery (“ground truthing”) of detected geophysical anomalies, and abatement of potential obstructions within the tunnel alignment.

The title of this session is "Wall Street Looks at the Mining Industry," and I am going to attempt to answer the question: Shouldn't Mining Stocks Sell at Higher Price Levels? Or, What Does Wall Street See When Looking at the Mining Industry? Well, it sees a capital intensive business, a technical industry, and a growing industry becoming more vertically integrated. But, at the same time, Wall Street sees a cyclical industry, a fragmented industry of erratic earnings, spotty public relations, a feast-or-famine business where the public usually does not differentiate between coal mining or metal mining, and does not appreciate either the risks or the rewards. As a result, mining stocks generally sell at relatively low price learnings ratios in comparison to other industrial groups. This PIE ratio, the current market price of the capital stock divided by annual earnings per share, is probably the most popular index of a stock's value. The average of the price/ earnings ratios of the 30 stocks comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 14. This diverse group of stocks is widely regarded as being a cross-section and representative of the industrial companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in comparison to 14, Asarco and Kennecott shares are currently available for about 8 times annual earnings. Even discounting earnings from South America, the stock of these two companies sells at only 10 times earnings. Of course, Peruvian politics is currently preventing Cerro shares from selling above 6 times earnings, and Chilean politics keeps Anaconda shares at a PIE multiple of 7. However, even in better times, these companies rarely sell above 10 times earnings. American Metal Climax and Newmont sell at only 11 times earnings as does Phelps Dodge and St. Joseph Lead. Few mining companies then have what can be considered a high PIE ratio-a figure higher than

INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20'x50' horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.

In the mid-I 970s the rallying cry sent out by the aggregate trade associations to aggregate operators was to come to Washington and help design national legislation mandating reclamation of pits and quarries. This collective effort paid off in that aggregate operators were able to assist in the design of "livable" legislation; however, the coal mining industry took some very hard hits. A principal argument used by the aggregate industry was that relatively small parcels of land are impacted, the operations are located in or near urban areas to serve in the development of that immediate area, and are of many years duration; whereas, coal strip mines disturb many acres, are of short duration, and whose products may have world or nationwide utilization. Historically, developments in reclamation are tied closely to the regulatory systems that have been created to control environmental effects of mining. Since reclamation generally results in a cost incurred after the stone, sand and gravel has been mined and does not add to the inherent value of the mineral, there was little incentive in the past for mine operators to reclaim the land. In 1977, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) became the law for coal mine operators. The law states that, among other provisions, reclamation must "restore the land affected to a condition capable of supporting the uses which it was capable of supporting prior to any mining, or higher or better uses". It is of interest to note that years before the initiation of legislation leading to SMCRA twenty-eight states already had reclamation regulations that covered virtually all minerals. The scope of performance standards found in the state reclamation regulations included slope stabilization, grading, revegetation, neutralization of toxic materials, visual screening, waste disposal, control of drainage, and other sources of pollution and erosion. Environmental legislation and the consequent regulations came about because the public perceived that private industry did not properly value environmental quality and as a result the government became the policeman.

Once considered the dowdy country cousins of the glamorous metallics, industrial minerals are shedding their old image. They are neither common nor easy and their time has come in an age of increasing specialization. Consider that of the 45 or so industrial minerals and rocks listed in [Table 1], almost three-quarters have ten or fewer significant suppliers (i.e., those individual countries contributing 2% or more of total world production); in more than half the cases, 85% of world production is accounted for by only five countries or fewer. Curiously, even materials that appear to be virtually ubiquitous like crushed rock and common salt have significant production vacuums. For example, there is a severe lack of sound aggregates along the US Gulf Coast and common salt production on a large scale is virtually absent in central Africa. These examples all underline the obvious, but acute truism that "The single most important fact about mineral resources is that they are not distributed equally over the world" (Flawn, 1966). Just as significant today is that human resources are not distributed equally over the world, and so arise some interesting commercial incongruities. In certain regions raw materials are plentiful but consumers are not, and without a market a mineral deposit is merely a geological curiosity. Elsewhere, there may be a market but no local raw material supply. For example, despite a huge market there is no or virtually no commercial production of chromite, diamonds, and manganese in the United States and Canada, nor phosphate rock, diamonds, rutile, and zirconium minerals in western Europe. In contrast, Australia with its small domestic market is the world's largest supplier of bauxite, diamonds, ilmenite, natural and synthetic rutile, and zircon; the same is true for South Africa which is a leading producer of chromite, manganese, diamonds, andalusite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon (Table 2). In the commercial world, Nature's uneven distribution is counterbalanced by deep sea international trade.

A microbiological flotation system that facilitates the removal of pyritic sulfurfrom coal is reported. The chemoautotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is utilized as a pyrite-selective biological surfactant that augments the flotation-mediated rejection of pyritic sulfur. The bacteria were produced by continuous cultivation in 50-L tanks, where it was possible to produce 3.8 x 1012 cells/day when the dilution rate was optimal and the pH was 1.6, a condition that prevented ferric precipitation. Prior to flotation, the bacteria were mixed with coal, which allowed cells to selectively adhere to the pyrite. The adherence of bacteria made the pyrite surfaces more hydrophilic, which facilitated separation by increasing the tendency of pyrite to sink, while the hydrophobic coal floated. When a synthetic coal/pyrite mixture (10.1 % sulfur) was subjected to microbial flotation, the level of sulfur rejection was stable during the entire period of operation (i.e., one hour). In the absence of bacteria, flotation reduced the sulfur content of a coal/pyrite mixture to within the range of 6.7% to 7.4%, with the combustible recoveries ranging from 93.9% to 99.0%. In the presence of bacteria, the sulfur content of cleaned coal was in the range of 1.3% to 1.4%, with the combustible recoveries ranging from 80.8% to 86.3%. Bacterial activity accounted for 57% of the total sulfur rejected through flotation. The desulfurization capacity of the system was further confirmed by testing it with run-of-mine coal. The pyritic sulfur content was reduced from 2.9% in the feed coal to around 1.2% in the froth product, while 80% of the combustible recovery was retained. Microbial flotation removed 60% of the pyritic sulfur from the feed. These findings demonstrated that micro¬bial flotation could be utilized for the removal of pyritic sulfur from coal in a semicontinuous system.

Brian graduated from the University of Alberta in 1973 with a master's of science degree and worked as a project metallurgist at Brenda Mines until 1977. He returned to the University of Alberta in late 1977 to work on his Ph.D. and later joined the faculty of engineering in 1980, leaving in 1988 to rejoin Brenda in the newly formed process technology division. In 1998 he left Svedala-Brenda to take a position with Simons International's newly formed enterprise development services group. His topic today is "People: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle." INTRODUCTION BRIAN FLINTOFF: Historically, the mining industry has relied on the people within a corporation to get things done. The culture of most companies was one of a slow but sure development of people, processes, equipment, and technology. Many of the larger companies supported in-house engineering and research organizations. However, the metal market pressures of the 1980s and the emergence of the global economy in the late '80s and early '90s put enormous financial pressures on the industry. As the old adage says, "necessity is the mother of invention," and the mining industry, like many others, has undergone a transformation. A cornerstone element of the transformation was the downsizing (or right-sizing) that was calculated to "trim the fat" from the capital and operating budgets. The goal was and is to find the highest sustainable operating profit.' While I'm sure one can find examples of losers (e.g., those who can be classified as suffering from corporate anorexia or institutional Alzheimer's) in such business reengineering efforts, there is little doubt that, on the whole, the transformation has been successful. The reality that now faces mill management is "How to do more with less?" At the risk of oversimplifying, one can look at this on two levels:

What is your personal view and assessment of the overall health of the industry in the current global economy? The economic outlook remains soft for the near future and, although the global economy is showing signs of recovery, uncertainty has tempered the pace of recovery. In addition to uncertainty, we are still facing significant economic challenges in many parts of the world, including Europe and the United States. The rapid expansion of China?s economy has recently slowed, further contributing to the sense of uncertainty in the overall health of the global economy. This situation is both a blessing and a curse, depending on which sector of the mining industry we are considering. For example, coal, industrial minerals, aggregates, base metal and precious metals markets are impacted by different forces and drivers and will experience different outcomes within the same economic environment. Let me give a few concrete examples to illustrate this concept. The prevailing economic uncertainty that I have just described tends to drive investors toward safe havens. Gold has historically been viewed as a safe haven and as long as investors shy away from traditional investments, gold prices will remain high and gold mining companies will continue to expand and invest capital in their operations. The same sluggish economy that drives gold prices higher has the opposite effect on other segments of the minerals industry. A great example of this is industrial minerals and aggregates used in construction. The markets that consume these minerals have contracted significantly over the past five years. The outlook for this segment is poor, as the glut of available housing continues to inhibit demand for new construction and, thus, many industrial minerals. In addition to this, the federal government?s lack of political will to enact long-term legislation funding transportation and infrastructure projects continues to be a drag on the U.S. aggregates industry.

Handling of fine coal is an importance issue for coal as well as the utility industry. Reconstitution in form of pellet or briquet would be desirable if it could be done economically. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three binders e.g., asphalt- emulsion, corn starch and Brewex, in forming pellets of ultra-fine clean coal. It was found that asphalt emulsion and corn starch were not effective binders for ultra-fine clean coal, however, Brewex provided excellent quality of pellets, which exceeded all the minimum quasi requirements of coal pellets. INTRODUCTION Advanced coal preparation techniques (physical or chemical) are designed to process ultra-fine (minus 200 mesh or 74 pm) coal. The average particle size of the clean coal product is about 25 pm. Currently available dewatering techniques are effective in providing a 25 to 30 percent moisture product of this size coal slurry (Parekh et al. 1989). Handling and utilization of this dewatered ultra-fine size coal is difficult. Reconstitution, which includes pelletization, briquetting, extrusion, etc., of the dewatered coal product provides an ideal answer to handling and transportation problems. However, reconstitution of fines in the coal industry has not been successful due to various reasons. The most important criterion for its unsuccessful application in the coal industry is the cost of the binder (Capes et al. 1965). Various methods of reconstitution, such as briquetting, disk pelletization, extrusion pelletization and roller and die-pelletization, have been tested for fine coal agglomeration (Conkle et al., 1991) (Richards, 1990). Conkle et al., (1992) have provided a detail analysis of each technique in terms of moisture and operating cost requirements. According to Conkle, briquetting requires a product containing very low moisture, whereas pelletization can be done with coal containing up to 30 percent moisture. Currently available dewatering technique provides about 25 percent moisture product, thus, pelletization appears to be an ideal route for reconstitution. In this paper, results are presented on the comparison of three different binders i.e., asphalt-emulsion, corn starch and Brewers condensed solids (BCS or Brewex), for fine coal pelletization.

INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. Model-Based Expert Control systems (MBEC) are on-line supervisory dynamic optimization systems which combine the ability of a phenomenological model to generate a large amount of information about the state of the process and predict its evolution, with the flexibility of a rules-based approach to take plant constraints into account and apply a complex control strategy. For its new concentrator started in 1995 in Kiruna (Sweden), LKAB has implemented a progressive grinding flowsheet with closed-circuit autogenous grinding followed by closed-circuit pebble grinding with ore pebbles. The standard for instrumentation in this new plant is very high. The control hardware consists of a Distributed Control System (DCS) through which the operators interact with the plant, supplemented by a site-level Management Information System (MIS). A state-of-the-art MBEC system was imbedded in the MIS by the authors before plant start-up. It consists of several modeling and expertise software modules: a phenomenological process model and a Kalman filter estimate continuously the state of the process, an optimizer calculates an optimum feedrate, while rules-based modules establish production targets and key process set-points. The decision to install the MBEC system as an integral part of the new plant before start-up illustrates the current maturity of the technology, i.e., enough know-how was accumulated through former projects to design and develop the system to a large extent without accessing the plant. The feasibility and the power of dynamic optimization systems were previously demonstrated in Kiruna pre-existing concentrator by the authors. First, a MBEC system was installed on the three existing pebble mill circuits, providing both an increase in quality (stabilised size distribution) and a 10% increase in capacity. An on-line expert control system with limited modeling capabilities was also installed in the existing flotation plant, with the aim of stabilizing phosphorous content in the concentrate and optimizing collector additions. Both objectives have been achieved.

Safety reasons render necessary the advanced calculation of the amount of methane degassing from a longwall in the scope of the ventilation planning of mines. Today empirical methods, which are based on observations of operational procedures, are used for the calculation of the amount of methane. Despite of constant improvement those calculations are not always sufficient. In particular calculations which are based on operational facts but not proved by experience are not reliable. Most of all these calculation procedures lack physical-analytical descriptions of the procedure itself, presenting only the effects on important parameters such as the distance between seams in the roof or floor or gas pressure. Tschersich [Tschersich 961 developed an analytical model for an advanced calculation by analysing the degassing of seams in the roof and floor and the physical parameters of gasflow. This model might correct the lacks of existing procedures and improve the precision and reliability of additional calculations. The model simulates the emission record in seams of the roof and the floor. It takes into account not only a multitude of parameters such as the distance to adjacent seams and gas pressure but also the depth of seams, gas content, rank of carbonification, rock temperature, face advance rate, initial and succeeding mining and the face length. In order to comprehend and to verify those correlations we extended the model of Tschersich and programmed this enlarged model using the computer language C++. Aim of this research is to guarantee a much higher accuracy in calculating methane emission caused by mining. The improved planning is expected to result in more safety and better prevention of high methane con- tent in ventilation as well as in a better use of the capacity of the mining equipment. The application [Drijver, lnderst 961 of the ex- tended model will also be very useful in the course of research projects as it allows computer simulation, i.e. in-situ research can be extensively limited or even replaced.
