This paper outlines the MOVIE project, which is dedicated to the development of a digital twin for an underground laboratory at the research and education mine “Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk Reiche Zeche” in Freiberg (Germany). Data from induced rock deformations and temperature fluctuations is collected using fiber-optic sensors. The objective of the project is to establish a virtual laboratory for real-time analysis of the interactions between geology, geomechanics, geometry and ventilation. This will be achieved by integrating models from these disciplines with artificial intelligence, creating a sophisticated hybrid model. The insights gained will enhance safety and efficiency in mining through improved digital planning options, ultimately contributing to more effective resource management and operational decision-making in different mining environments.

Finely processed industrial minerals in "powdered" form have long been utilized by the plastics, paint, rubber, paper, ceramics, and adhesives industries as fillers, extenders, coatings and special additives. These minerals, primarily calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide, and the like, have provided economic, uniform and consistent base materials which have, in turn, been used by the referenced industries to manufacture quality products. The focus of this paper will be the development of equipment and systems at ABB Raymond for the dry processing of such non-metallic minerals in order to meet what have become increasingly stringent requirements of the producers of these minerals. Changes in these requirements seem to have been accelerating rapidly during the last ten years, and it is expected this process will continue into the 1990's.

Underground mine fires remain a concern for mine operators, posing a health and safety risk to mineworkers. In the last decade, the number of mine fires has decreased significantly. However, dealing with an unknown fire in underground mines can be a challenging task, which could lead to a hazardous condition for miners during an evacuation and rescue operation. A timely detection of a mine fire and monitoring its characteristics—namely, size and location—are of great importance in reducing the risk of mine fire injuries. A new, improved fire location algorithm has been developed and integrated into an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) program by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This paper describes the new fire location model and presents the results of verification fire tests conducted at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) facility of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) using the collected AMS data. NIOSH is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve the detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in mines. The results demonstrate successful application of the improved fire location model and provide a useful tool for solving the problem of unknown fire location and reducing the risk of hazardous conditions.

INTRODUCTION The mining industry has been under- going a significant restructuring for the past several years. Some firms have been liquidated. Some have been merged with other firms. A number of mining divisions of larger firms have been spun off, in some cases in leveraged buyouts by management. Recently, there have been a number of spin outs of gold subsidiaries. There are also a number of start-up situations where new firms are emerging as significant gold producers through mine development or acquisition. This restructuring has created an attractive market for specialized mining finance firms, and a number of firms have recently entered that field in the United States. These firms provide financial advisory and valuation services to mining firms and project developers, and access to venture capital. In some cases, they invest for clients or for their own account. I have been asked to describe how our firm works, and what kind of information we expect to receive when mine developers seek our assistance in financing a project. HOW WE OPERATE Denver Mining Finance works for both mine developers and investors. We also provide expert advice on mining issues to governments and to firms who are in litigation over mining issues. A lot of our work involves valuing mineral interests for various purposes. Our principal expertise is in the technical, commercial, and financial area. We help put mining deals into shape commercially so that they can be financed, and we help investors get into mining deals that are commercially sound. We work on projects, but we also advise mining firms on the structure of their business and how to make the most out of one or several mines that they might own. In addition to our work for clients, we are also prepared to invest in mining projects for our own account, and to recommend gold properties for acquisition by our parent company, Royal Gold, Inc. We are, to some extent, a venture capital firm, in that we sometimes work with projects that are not "bankablerV1 and are prepared to invest in attractive early-stage situations in mining. However, I want to emphasize that our principal focus is on development of commercially attractive mining projects that can be brought into production in the best possible financial terms. If we can make a project qualify for a project loan from a commercial bank, we will not advise the developer to use high cost venture capital. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus primarily upon our functions with respect to development of precious metal projects. In a typical case, a firm with an advanced-staged project approaches us for help with financing the final feasibility study, and construction and operation of a mine. In some cases, the developer has already developed a financing plan and wants only our access to investors. If we agree that the project is sound and that the financing scheme will be attractive to investors, we will help the developer reach investors on a commission basis. In such cases, we are particularly insistent that the financing plan and our participation meet all regulatory requirements, particularly compliance with state and federal securities laws. In most cases, however, the developer asks us for advise both on how to structure the financing, and how it can be implemented. Here we work for fees based on hourly rates for advisory work,

The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for con¬tinued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. . The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950; the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. Electrochemical methods have potential to treat waters impacted by mining, while simultaneously producing a recoverable metal product to off-set treatment costs. Mining-impacted waters may present challenges with electrochemical treatment due to low concentrations and complex solutions of numerous dissolved metals. This paper presents an evaluation of the potential strengths and limitations of abiotic electrowinning of mining-impacted waters. In particular the impacts of chemical composition on metals removal are evaluated. Results of bench-scale experiments demonstrate the potential to remove metals on the cathode (copper, cadmium, lead), as well as the anode (manganese). Pre-treatment for iron and aluminum may be needed and post-treatment pH adjustment would be necessary. INTRODUCTION Due to continually increasing demand for metals, new technologies and innovative applications of existing technologies are needed to recover metals from mining-impacted waters. Electrochemical methods have long been used for metallurgical processes with solutions containing high concentrations of the target metal. However, electrochemistry also has potential to treat waters with lower metal concentrations, while simultaneously producing a recoverable metal product to offset treatment costs. Electrochemical water treatment may have several benefits over traditional alkaline treatment for acid rock drainage (ARD). Sludge produced from alkaline treatment has high water content that is difficult to dewater, even for treatment plants producing a relatively high-density sludge. For example, the Argo Tunnel Water Treatment Facility (Argo Facility) in Idaho Springs, Colorado uses hydrated lime to produce a high-density sludge with a solids content of 20 to 25 percent and filter cake with solids content from 30 to 35 percent [1]. Furthermore, costs for managing the sludge are significant, approximately $90,000 per year for treating approximately 150 million gallons of water [1]. Although not the case for the Argo Facility, sludge produced from alkaline treatment of ARD has potential to be classified as hazardous. Disposal of sludge also opens up the potential for future liability depending on the sludge’s chemical stability and methods of disposal. In contrast to alkaline treatment, electrochemical treatment produces metals in elemental and other highly-dense forms on the cathode. If metals concentrations and flow rates are sufficiently high, the metals recovered may help offset overall treatment costs. In addition, sludge production would be reduced, if not eliminated altogether, thereby reducing both disposal costs and potential future liabilities as well.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. Among the thirty-five declared critical raw materials (CRM) in the United States, there is no sustainable domestic production for the fourteen of them, while for some others domestic supply does not meet the national demand. Numerous potential critical raw material projects are in advanced exploration stages. However, the price uncertainties for many of these commodities put feasible future production into question and come into contrast with overly optimistic price forecasts published in all feasibility studies related to such exploration projects. Thus, in this work, a newly developed smart computational tool is used to evaluate the real perspectives of several CRM exploration projects implementing actual commodity prices, and to conduct reverse calculations in order to find the prices at which each project can be viable.

Since the turn of the century the mining industry in the United States has had a number of serious mine explosions, fires and ground fall disasters that have led to a major re-evaluation of mine communication and rescue practices. One of the hindrances of current underground communication technologies is the potential of lost or cut connections when a serious accident, such as an explosion, fire, inundation or major ground fall, takes place. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act)1 mandated that each underground coal mine in the U.S. must provide for two-way wireless, post-accident communications between underground and surface personnel as well as electronic tracking of underground workers One area that has gained renewed attention in the mining sector is Through-The-Earth (TTE) communication. TTE technology has a major advantage in that transceiver devices can be carried by miners and set up quickly during an emergency, since they require no wire connection to the surface. TTE technology uses ultra-low frequency (1 to 4 kHz) electromagnetic waves, requiring relatively large wire loop antennas and highly sensitive receivers. The signal bandwidth is narrow and the permissible antenna currents in coal mines are restricted, which has led to limited usability of TTE technology in the past, as evidenced in research studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s. Yenchek (2012)2 pointed out that recent advances in receiver and signal processing technology have enabled voice and text communication capabilities and much improved sensitivity that offers new possibilities for TTE communication in mining applications. One company that has been developing such technology is Vital Alert Communication Inc. Vital Alert has been providing TTE communications since 2003 with a growing focus on emergency response and portable systems. The company?s Canary® Go System is one such product that looks to provide reliable communication capabilities in a portable, user friendly unit that can be utilized both for normal operation and mine rescue scenarios. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have tested the Canary Go TTE communications system in the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine to determine signal propagation distances, signal quality and aspects of practical application.

Modern mechanical raise drilling was first introduced into the United states in 1962. This method of safely, economically raising a shaft has steadily increased in popularity since that time. This steady growth has been largely enhanced by the many advantages to be gained by mechanical raise drilling, as well as by the increasing reliability of the equipment required. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the state of the art of raise drilling to include: the various applications and advantages; the equipment requirements, including a comparison of the various types and sizes of machines and rock cutting equipment; equipment performance; and future trends.

An accepted statement of fact is that transportation next to agriculture is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States contributed immensely to the growth and prosperity of our nation. My objective is to make each and everyone here aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, covered wagons or whatever. The Pueblo Viejo gold/silver mine, located in the Dominican Republic, started production in early 1974 processing ores averaging 4 g/tonne gold and 20 g/tonne silver at a rate of 7,250 tonnes/day. The ore milled is a silicified siltstone with average work index of about 8 that occurs as an extensive oxide capping of a primary sulfide orebody. The sulfide ores are refractory to conventional treatment process and extensive research work is now in progress to develop a treatment process for them. The ore deposit has a long history having been mined by the indigenous Arawak Indians (for some time in the early sixteenth century) prior to the arrival of the Spanish and then by the Spaniards. In the early 1950?s, Italian engineers attempted to process the sulfide ores. Mining by the Indians and Spanish was abandoned because of low grade and little coarse gold in the oxide ores and by the Italians because of the refractory nature of the sulfide ore. In 1969, Rosario Resources geologists discovered that there existed sufficient reserves of oxide ore for a viable mining operation and accordingly, the plant was designed, built and brought into production.

Much has been written about hydrothermal alteration and the compositional changes induced by it in the wallrocks of mineral deposits, especially in alummino-silicate wallrocks. So much has been written and the descriptions so varied, in fact, that the casual reader frequently is bewildered by the extreme complexities and lack of uniformity, real or apparent. Certainly the mineralogy and chemistry of altered rocks are not as simple as most of us would like, but neither are they as complex in their principal aspects as pa of what has been written would lead us to believe. The trend until recently seems to have been toward greater complexity and hence greater confusion, but the straightforward presentation of Creasey (1959), it is hoped, marks a reversal in this trend.

Virtually no two mines operate with the same geographic, geologic, and mining conditions. It follows chat problems vary with the conditions from mine to mine or often from one section to another in the same mine. Actual situations are described, and a technique of "stacking" maps to predict hazards is presented. Two case histories of the use of multiple overlays are de- scribed. The first deals with a property that was examined before the start of mining. The second is a property in which severe ground control problems were encountered and the relationship between the problem areas and known conditions were found to be related.

This paper is presented with particular reference to the findings of the OECD Advisory Conference on tunneling held last July in Washington D. C. A great deal has been said about the Conference in the past few months, but it may be appropriate to review briefly the background and objectives of the Conference to better understand how the mining community can relate its underground excavation problems to the results of the Conference. OBJECTIVES OF THE OECD CONFERENCE The world demand for tunneling (the term tunneling is used here loosely to include almost all forms of underground excavation) is expected to grow at an in- creasing rate. During the decade of the ?70's, the demand is expected to at least double by comparison with the previous decade. Much of this increase in demand will be due to the rapid growth of urbanization around the world. As urban populations grow larger and denser, the conservation of surface land and the quality of the environment become more important. This aspect of the increasing demand poses a difficult challenge to those who must plan and implement urban development.

Although the fundamental principles of hindered bed classifiers are relatively simple, the complex interactions between the operating parameters provide a degree of difficulty that hinders the ability for on-line plant optimization. Thus, a dynamic population balance model was developed for determining the hindered settling velocity of particles varying in density and size. The steady-state results of the model include partition curves as a function of particle size and density as well as metallurgical data. A statistical comparison of the simulation results with those obtained from industrial units reveal a high level of accuracy with adjusted R2 values greater than 0.95.

The Alligator Ridge Mine was discovered in 1976 by a prospector grubstaked by Amselco Exploration Inc. in eastern Nevada 116 km (72 mi.) northwest of Ely in White Pine County. The mine is operated as a 50-50 Joint Venture by BP Gold, the operator, which is a subsidiary of British Petroleum Minerals America and Nerco Inc., a subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light.

This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

The methodology and results of a feasibility study of an Automatic Truck Dispatching (ATD) system in an actual open pit mining operation, are presented. Using mine cost data, an economic analysis confirms that capital and operating cost savings with ATD out-weigh the costs. Productivity improvement achievable with ATD is quantified with a computer simulation of truck haulage based on mine production and operational data.
