Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. Economical and environmental pressures necessitates the recovery of the minus 0.6 mm x 0 coal generated by todays mining machines. This size fraction, dependent on the type of production unit, maintenance of the production unit, and the Hardgrove Grindability Index, can be a substantial portion of the Preparation Plant feed. Historically, dewatering of the collected 0.6 mm x 0 product has often been rather expensive and marginal with respect to surface moisture reduction. The Freeman United Crown II Preparation Plant more than adequately demonstrates that the continuous scroll type centrifuge can dewater 0.6 mm x 0 coal to acceptable surface moisture levels.

The US Bureau of Mines compared column flotation using either fine or coarse bubbles with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a &.7% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrate with 87% recovery, compared with 43.8% and 43.5% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrates with 85% and 77% recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse- and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5% Cr2O3 with 95% recovery, exceeding conventional flotation, which produced 35.6% Cr2O3 -grade concentrates with 87% recovery.

The $300 million West Side Combined Sewer Over?ow Project consists of over5.5 kilometers of soft ground tunnel, an 833-million liter per day (220-MGD) deep shaft pump station, 3 kilometers of micro tunneling, and other miscellaneous shafts and pipelines. The construction contract, underway since September 2002, is a reimbursable cost plus fixed fee contract that included a quali?cations-based contractor procurement process and has undergone some modi?cation since execution. This paper will describe the contractual issues addressed to date, dispute resolution, where improvements can be made, and how an Owner can evaluate whether this type of contract is the best approach for an underground project.

Long distance, overland conveyors require significant capital outlay of which up to 70% may be contributed to the cost of belting. Significant savings may be achieved by identifying possible risk areas and applying modern technology methods to reduce or eliminate risk. Recently, Sasol Coal commissioned an overland belt conveyor system comprising three belt conveyors of 7 km, 5 km and 4.5 km in length. These were designed and constructed taking the above into consideration. Contained in the paper are the belt conveyor system requirements, designing assumptions and methods applied in the designing process as well as ways and means to eliminate or at least reduce risks.

When maintenance of a plant or operation is under discussion immediately three "M&apos;s", all in short supply, are brought to mind - money, men and markets. This paper will present what currently is being done at our plants and its effect on the 3 "M&apos;s". Examination of coal realization figures (F.O.B. Mine) from 1945 to the present reveals the fact that open and free competition can and will meet market conditions. The industry, without benefit of advantages afforded tax and transportation wise to oil and gas, remains the backbone of the energy market of United States. Figure No. 1 shows the realization figures from 1945 through 1962 compared to the hourly earnings. Note that through 1945 to 1948 F.O.B. prices increased $1.93 per ton while hourly earnings increased $.66 per hour. Since 1948 (with the ex¬ception of 1957) F.O.B. prices have declined $.45/ton, while hourly earnings have increased $1.23 per hour. Basically the maintenance men possibly represent the highest increment rate in the overall hourly earning.

Jet pulverization is a relatively new tool for fine grinding. It is not yet in general use in the mining and ore dressing fields, since most of the requirements in these areas have been for relatively coarse particle sizes. As the need for finer grinding increases - because of different ores, new products, and new values being sought - jet pulverization will, increasingly, be properly used.

In this paper, autogenous grinding is defined as the combined crushing and grinder of a run-of-mine ore or the product from a primary crusher, in a single stage grinding mill. This is in contrast to pebble milling where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. The autogenous mill to compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding must not use greater power, must use less labor and steel, and must produce an equivalent product.

The use of longwall/shortwall mining systems is under increasing scrutiny by the U. S, coal industry as a means to reverse the decline in productivity. The success of these mining systems depends to a great extent upon designing the system hardware to best suit local conditions. Of particular importance in this regard is designing the various elements of the total ground support system, including face, face end, and gate road supports, to accommodate local geologic conditions. This presentation centers on the problem of selecting the face support system. The existing geologic situation can influence the selection of the face support hardware in a variety&apos; of ways. In general terms, these influences can be grouped into the following four areas: 1. The capacities required of the support unit; 2. The roof, coverage supplied by the support units; 3. The flexibility required of the support unit to meet changing geologic conditions; and 4. The required stiffness characteristics of the individual support units both vertically and horizontally. The following will center on the first area, i.e., the required d capacities of the support unit, in particular, the maximum required load density for a particular geologic situation.

Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

A spherical agglomeration process for the separation of scheelite fines of less than 30 µm in very low concentration of 0.04% WO3 in a binary mixture with quartz fines of less than 30 pm has been described. A concentrate containing 14% WO, with more than 90% recoveries could be achieved by means of anionic sodium sulfo succinate collector at pH 3.5 and also with commonly used anionic sodium oleate at pH 10.5 as per the conceptual flowsheet suggested. Such a process is envisaged as commercial potential for the recovery of fine-grained scheelite present in the tailings of gold plants as found in India.

In 1965, Monsanto started planning of a new dike (No. 15) for use in disposing of ore tailings at its Columbia, Tennessee phosphorus plant. Generally, in the phosphorus industry only clay tailings are produced making it necessary to borrow fill for construction of a retaining dike. Borrow area investigations indicated that weathered shales and limestones adjacent to the dam site would provide adequate construction materials. It was proposed that the more clayey weathered shales would be used for the impervious core and the more granular weathered limestones would be placed in the outer shell of the dike. A dike section is shown in Figure 1 with gradation curves for core and shell materials in Figure 2. Figure 3 shows an aerial view of the tailings pond and dike during first-stage construction. Although the borrow area explorations indicated that the weathering of the sedimen-tary deposits was highly irregular, it was not considered necessary, at the time, to specify special excavation techniques that would ensure a thorough blending of the materials in the borrow pit. Instead, because of the short haul distance, a scraper operation for both clay core and granular shell materials was adopted as the most economical construction method. Using this materials-handling technique, variations in permeability could be expected in the compacted layers inthe embankment. Where continuous layers of less clayey limestones were placed in the core of the dam, extending from the upstream to downstream shells, seepage losses would be expected to increase substantially. Upon completion of the damn 1966, and shortly after reservoir filling, it was apparent that the construction technique used had resulted in the formation of pervious layers through the clay core. Excessive seepage on the downstream face of the dike was noticeable within a very short time. A monitoring program was established, using piezometric observations and flow measurements. These data indicated that seepage should be reduced and the application of an asphaltic emulsion

I work as the Bureau&apos;s Liaison Officer for Colorado and am one of 38 Bureau employees who are stationed, for the most part, in state capitals across the nation. These offices serve all 50 states and Puerto Rico--some being assigned more than one state. Our primary task is to seek ways to achieve a closer and more productive relationship between State agencies and the Bureau of Mines. In 1970, when the Bureau initiated this nationwide system, our activities were limited to mineral supply operations. The potential of the program was soon recognized and Liaison Officers became the personal representatives of the Director and responsible for con- ducting the business of the Bureau that is best handled at the local level. Knowledgeable in the total operations of the Bureau, Liaison Officers are a primary point of contact for the public and for you to obtain information and, again, for you to provide the government with insight into the difficulties you have in providing this nation with an adequate supply of industrial mineral materials.

The in-pit placement of crushing and conveying equipment results in a flattening of the pit slope of a multiple-bench open pit mine. To maximize the economic benefit of lower haulage costs associated with in-pit conveying, one must minimize the cost of the flatter slope which is expressed in terms of additional stripping or tied up ore. A computer program that compares the tonnage aspects of various conveyor layouts will be discussed.

Historically, Vanadium and Uranium have been precipitated together in carbonate sill circuits. A separation of the salts of the two metals was then made on the basis of the fact that the reduced, salts of vanadium are more solo to and those of uranium lose soluble than the respective salts of higher valence. In practice this was carried out by fusing the precipitated combined concentrate with salt, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide with oil soaked sawdust mixed into the charge as the reducing agent. Generally the fusion was carried out batch wise and the resulting slag or glass leached in water. A good, fusion and three or four decantation washes resulted in almost complete recovery of the vanadium in the liquid phase and a very high recovery of the uranium as a dense black U02 solid.

Conditioning is any treatment of an ore with or without reagents which affect its floatability. While it can start in crushing or grinding circuits and continue into the flotation circuit, conditioning will refer here only to reagent treatment in an agitated tank designed for the purpose. Such treatment is often unnecessary with sulphide ores and collectors or with amines,* but it has long been recognized as essential with fatty acid collectors in the flotation of non-sulphide minerals, The requirements can be extremely variable, depending upon ore alteration, the presence or absence of slimes, and 1 the minerals to be separated. The study described here was concerned with the recovery of oxidized molybdenum minerals from an ore containing the element in both sulphide and oxidized form. Flotation of the iron minerals with which the oxidized molybdenum was associated was the basis for the process. Recovery and optimum concentrate grade without desliming depended upon a twenty to thirty minute conditioning of the pulp with flotation reagents at forty to fifty percent solids and at high turbulence. The objective in the study was the determination of design and operating criteria for conditioners in order to permit scaling-up of the results without repeating the entire study on a larger scale.

The most widely used machines for grinding coal to the sizes prescribed for the pulverized coal firing of furnaces, boilers, and kilns are the vertical ball-race, roller-race and roller-bowl types of mills. However, the increased use of coal has led to an increased use of tumbling ball mills for coal grinding. Specifically, air-swept ball mills are now a part of many dry pulverized coal firing systems, offering the advantages over vertical mills of lower maintenance costs and the ability to handle strong or abrasive (high ash) coals. The current use of wet ball mills is to prepare coal-water slurries for direct combustion, although in time they may also find routine application for preparing slurry feed for coal gasifiers. In either application, wet ball mills ofer the advantages that coal grinding and wetting can be accomplished in a single step, and that the mills are readily used with fine wet screens to assure top size control in the slurry product. The simulation of tumbling ball mills with mathematical models has reached a fairly advanced stage, but the concepts have been applied only recently to coal grinding. As this paper will demonstrate, however, significant progress has been made in the use of models in ball mill circuit design for coal grinding. Included is a description of the techniques used for simulation, recommended parameter estimation methods, and demonstrations of process engineering calculations for large scale coal grinding circuits.

One of the few innovations in hydrometallurgy in recent years has been the utilization of the chemistry of basic iron sulfates called jarosites. These have been used to make iron-zinc separations in the processing of zinc concentrates and are a very important factor in both the Duval and Cymet copper chloride processes as a means of preventing iron build-up in the closed leaching circuits. Copper oxychlorides are kindred compounds in that they are insoluble basic salts that form at low pH (1.5 to 3) and precipitate selectively from many base metal solutions. They have been reported in the chemical literature as far back as 1860, and a few of them are known in their mineralogical forms (particularly atacamite) usually as nuisance minerals because of their chloride content. Several patents describe their synthesis and use as fungicides and insecticides, and papers have discussed their formation as corrosion pro¬ducts on copper and brass piping (14).

The Humphrey Preparation Plant of Christopher Coal Company, located in Monongalia County, West Virginia, was built to process the combined production of the Pursglove No. 15 and the Humphrey No. 7 Mines. Both Mines operate in the Pittsburgh Seam, primarily producing Metallurgical Fuel destined for by-product ovens in the Pittsburgh District. The recent study by R. M. Hays(l) prompted the study summarized in this paper. In his Interesting paper, Mr. Hays shows fine results to be attainable by a relatively complex flowsheet on a semi-taconite, a manifestly difficult ore to treat. We obtained a semi -taconite from Minnesota, and treated this sample by wet magnetic separation alone. The device in which the separation was accomplished is the standard pilot-plant, laboratory separator in use at Magnetic Engineering Associates&apos; laboratory (MEA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It consists of a cylindrical space which can be magnetized by turning on the magnet of the separator. In this cylindrical space, there is a canister which provides the special configuration of the magnetic field and magnetic field gradients that MEA considers to be required. The ore pulp is made to flow through the canister while the current is on. A portion of the pulp is retained in the canister, and the rest is evolved as a non-magnetic fraction. The laboratory device is cyclic, but it accurately predicts the results obtainable by an Industrial unit of either cyclic or continuous type (moving matrix). The ore tested was 99.5°%o -325 mesh, and approximately 75% -500 mesh. The concentrate from this ore was, therefore, eminently suitable for pelletizing. In passing the ore through the magnet, we had the choice of repeatedly passing the concentrate from the first step through the operation, or of repeatedly passing the non-magnetics.
