In 1976, a decision was made by Anamax Mining Company to install an unusual conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 mi) from the new Eisenhower Mine to the Twin Buttes concentrator. The system, supplied by Cable Belt Limited of the United Kingdom, represents a radical departure from conventional belt conveyors. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes driven by a single 2 240 kw (3 000 HP) drive while the belt acts only as the ore carrying medium. Full production was begun in January, 1979. Start-up problems hampered production for several months but were resolved by a joint Anamax-Cable Belt effort. The system has been operating at design capacity for 4-1/2 years, and has proven itself as a reliable, low cost ore transportation system.

Strategic Data Planning (SDP) is an emerging technique for the analysis and design of information systems. This paper describes the use of strategic data planning in the formulation of a complete integrated set of mining technical systems for the Koolan Island iron ore mine. Applications covered include hydrogeology, geology, mine planning, surveying, quality control, laboratory and mine production recording. Koolan Island is 13 kilometres long and 5.5 kilometres wide at its widest point. Its sole industry is an open pit iron ore mine of 3 million tonnes annual capacity, owned and operated by BHP Minerals. Some of the production is used by BHP Steel International, but most is exported. The orebody is steeply dipping and is mined bench by bench. Outturn grades for run-of-mine product are iron 66.5%, silica 3.0%, alumina 1.0%. Computer systems are run on Data General equipment, currently an MV10000. Computer applications, which are shared across mine sites, are developed and maintained by BHP Information Systems in BHP's Melbourne Office.

U.S. Government sponsored studies proclaim large reductions in surface mine productivity. Consulting studies place a large share of the blame on increased governmental regulatory activities and on inexperienced, improperly train people. Union rules, which allow indescriminate bidding for job openings, seem to be a major factor causing the lack of experience in spite of elaborate training programs.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper from silver/copper alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of composition of alloys, concentration of lixiviants, stirring speed and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Silver / copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percents of silver in these alloys were 76.9, 46.9 and 24.1. The results on the rate of dissolution obtained for these alloys have been compared with that of pure silver and copper under the same testing conditions. A particular emphasis has been given to the galvanic effect on the overall dissolution rates.

Bessac's presence in Singapore started in 2014 with the construction of the Thomson metro line, which includes 18 miles of twin-bore tunnels and 22 stations split into 17 construction packages. Bessac joint venture was allotted the T219 lot. The works include the construction of a new 660-foot (200-meter) long transfer station, two parallel 19-foot (5.8 m) ID tunnels and a pedestrian underpass. The urban context and the very soft ground stratum imposed to utilize unusual tunneling techniques, from upgrading a slurry TBM to a high-density slurry TBM to launch with very low cover and canopy pipe roofing completed with a MTBM without retrieval shaft.

In the Western Coal Region, successful reclamation of surface-mined areas includes the protection of groundwater sources. To accomplish this, a complete understanding of the geohydrology of the affected area is imperative. Successful mine design also calls for careful attention to geohydrology. Because the Western Coal Region is semi-arid land used mainly for farming and grazing, groundwater is a particularly sensitive topic. It is especially sensitive where the lignite scheduled for mining is itself the aquifer supplying the farms and ranches. Such is the case throughout much of the Western Coal Region, particularly where there are no near-surface sand and gravel aquifers that are commonly found in the glaciated portions of the Region. Just as mining can adversely affect groundwater supply, so can groundwater adversely affect mining. Mine flooding and highwall instability are examples of this. But, mine operators must realize that procedures they use to remedy geohydrologically-related mining problems can have a dramatic effect upon ground- water conditions in areas adjacent to the mine. A logical precaution is to require the acquisition of complete baseline data prior to making the first cut. We recommend that the mining plan not only incorporate the reclamation plan, but that they be developed as one plan.

"INTRODUCTIONIn tunneling projects, pre-grouting is performed with the purpose of establishing an impervious zone around the tunnel periphery. This is obtained by reducing the penetrability of the most conductive fractures in the rock mass. The main attention, besides economy of the project, is given to limiting the ingress of water into the tunnel to a certain amount during construction s well as operation period. Failure in pre-grouting process may, according to Bruce (2007), significantly affect the project in terms of safety, performance, cost and time. In this respect, determination of design parameters (pumping pressure, properties of the mix and stop criteria) affects these projects significantly. In current practices, depends on the geological conditions and requirements of the project these parameters differ widely. Weaver (1991) recommends selection of design parameters, specifically grout injection pressures, based on site specific factors and the conditions at each specific hole into which grout is to be injected (grout hole logging and water pressure test data). Houlsby (1990) correlated the allowable grouting pressure to the quality of the rock mass and the rock cover above the grouted fracture. In his methodology, grouting should be continued until the maximum pressure was attained. Later, Lombardi and Deere (1993) introduced the Grout Intensity Number (GIN), which limits the combination of injection pressure and injected grout volume in order to control the energy induced in the fracture i.e. avoid fracture jacking. Even though the GIN method was a step forward in understanding of the mechanism of the fracture deformation, there are ambiguities connected to this methodology, thus determination of the intensity number is challenging (see e.g., Rafi and Stille 2015)a.A main problem when no theoretical solution is practiced is that effects from the chosen injection pressure, such as possible increases of transmissivity and changes in total grouting time, remains hidden in the overall grouting process. The question is if a high or a low pressure should be used to fulfil the requirements of the projects at the lowest possible cost."

Ongoing economic success for mining companies is dramatically enhanced when they really know what they are harvesting, such that they can accurately forecast their head grades for any time period in excess of a month. This is an uncommon experience. It is a very common scenario for resource/reserve estimates to overstate the concentration (grade). Grade is a critical input of revenue, and hence, it is to cashflow projections. With the current direction being taken by the legal climate, it is no longer adequate for directors to accept the resource/reserve estimates of experts at face value. This is because resource/reserve estimates are the foundation of primary mineral economic decisions. Directors of mining assets need to undertake their own due diligence analysis of these estimates, in the best interest of themselves, and the company's shareholders. In the light of the industry's past achievements, this is quite a challenge. This paper suggests a set of new objective tools for directors to undertake an overview of the unique commodity concentration pattern and assess associated economic dynamics of each mineralization. These tools allow the examination of global graphical trends that can be helpful to directors and others in undertaking due diligence of resource/reserve statements. Ensure that it smells right.

The brines from the sub-surface of the Laguna del Rey dry lake are pumped to Química del Rey, S. A. plant, where they are cooled in adiabatic crystallizers precipitating sodium sulphate decahydrate. This salt is dehydrated in multiple effect evaporators and dried in rotary kilns producing high purity anhydrous sodium sulphate. The spent brines from the sodium sulphate operation are concentrated in solar ponds, precipitating astrakanite and leaving a brine with a higher concentration of magnesium ions. This brine is treated with calcium chloride solution to eliminate the remainder of sulphates, leaving a solution of magnesium chloride ready for the manufacture of refractory grade magnesium oxide or periclase. The magnesium chloride is reacted with dolime to produce magnesium hidroxide which is washed, filtered, and calcined to produce soft burned magnesium oxide, which is briquetted and dead burned to produce the periclase.

The effective employment of a pretensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut preload. In this paper, a load indicator washer (LIW) able to withstand an assigned static loading as well as provide an appropriate pretension is presented. The different LIW breadths are numerically analyzed with ABAQUS finite-element code to estimate deformation when a designated 60 kN preload is applied. The numerical simulation employs the bilinear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nut-LIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, long-term relaxation effect on bolt pretension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW predetermined deformation is the bolt pretension. It is drawn from the simulation results that LIWs with thicknesses of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 mm are completely flattened when subjected to 28, 42.5, 65, 76 and 88 kN preloads, respectively.

The White Pine orebody is characterized by a high lateral stress or highly faulted and joined conditions. Because of these difficult conditions roof support has always been a main concern. Mechanical bolts were widely used in the early seventies; however, it became apparent that major improvements in ground control were required if safe operation at White Pine was to be continued. The first step was taken in 1973-1974 with the testing of resin bolting. Record of caves and roof-falls with either type of support demonstrated superiority of resin bolting versus mechanical bolting - Safety was dramatically improved which was the absolute first consideration; however resin bolting was still more expensive than mechanical bolting. In order to generalize resin bolt installation, the second step was therefore to acquire special roof bolters compatible with resin bolting. The machine was to enhance the safety of the operation. This was achieved by the acquisition of the Secoma bolting machine equipped with an automatic bolting turret. Being a "hands off" operation the safety of the operator is total. Using a fixed taped attachment of the drill steel on the chuck a front guide and an automatic regulator torque thrust on the steel drilling in small diameter was possible. Being a fully automatic process only one operator is required per machine versus two operators with the conventional machines. The two main objectives were reached enabling the extension of resin bolting to the whole mine.

Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola's De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v' at this point is given by IIn this equation p' is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents. The construction mineral aggregates industry--the largest industry on a tonnage basis--is threatened with large shortages in the near future. Ironically, these common minerals which include sand, gravel, and stone are among the most plentiful in the earth's crust. However, as these minerals are low in value and used in large volumes, they are extremely sensitive to transport cost, e.g., a haul of 20 miles doubled the delivered cost of mineral aggregates. Consequently, these minerals must be located close to points of demand to have economic usefulness. But the development of new deposits is virtually impossible near many urban areas for legal, sociological and economic reasons. The spector of unfinished urban transport systems, curtailed residential construction, and a general deterioration of the physical urban plant, looms as a direct consequent of future mineral aggregate shortages in the U. S. metropolitan areas. The shortages of mineral aggregates in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area (G.N.Y.M.A.) are prototypical of the shortages faced by the U. S. Metropolitan areas. This paper presents an economic analysis of the consequences of not considering the broad aspects of conservation economics as a major component of resource management. The needless annual cost for the G.N.Y.M.A. is shown to be $30 million.

Nonfatal injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STF) that occur at surface mines can result from inadequate lighting. Mobile equipment operators are among the occupations associated with the nonfatal incidents reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In addition, getting on/off the equipment (ingress/egress) frequently adds to the highest proportion of nonfatal incidents. Accordingly, researchers at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a field study to investigate lighting on haul trucks and wheel loaderswith regard to glare and illuminance levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The objective was to determine whether two light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires—a Mr. Beams® (model MB390 Ultrabright) (area luminaire-1) and a NIOSH-developed Saturn (custom-designed for a mine roof bolter study) (area luminaire-2)—could complement a headlamp luminaire. Measured levels of visual tasks, with the headlamp alone and the area luminaires plus the headlamp, demonstrated that illuminance met or exceeded IES-recommended levels. Nevertheless, the area luminaires illuminated a much broader area, which is key to increasing hazard awareness. Discomfort and disability glare were lower with area luminaire-1 than with area luminaire-2. Differences in glare were more noticeable for newer models of haul trucks and loaders featuring updated ingress/egress system designs. This study demonstrates that commercially available luminaires, such as area luminaire-1, are capable of complementing headlamp lighting, and can thus improve a miner’s ability to detect and avoid STF hazards.

Silicon is usually considered to be a useful metallic alloying element. To be more truthful, it is not a metal at all, but a semiconductor, whose electrical resistance (when pure) is high and decreases with temperature. We will join the metallurgists, at least for this paper, and refer to it as a metal. In its commercially available form, silicon is metallic in appearance, brittle, with a density of 2.33, less than that of aluminum. Silicon dioxide or quartz has a high heat of formation, which not only makes the metal a useful reductant for other materials, but also makes it difficult to reduce from its ore. The melting point is 1412°C, slightly less than steel, but substantially higher than aluminum or cast iron. The alloys of silicon with iron, usually called ferrosilicons, have some unique advantages. The melting points of most alloys are substantially below those of iron or silicon (Fig. 1). The two major compounds formed (FeSi and FeSi2) help somewhat in the reduction of silicon by their energies of formation, but the influence of these phases on the mechanical properties is more important. Four major groups of alloys are made -- silicon metal (>95% silicon), 75-85% ferrosilicon, 50% ferrosilicon, and silvery pig iron (12-22% silicon). The alloys between 50 and 65% silicon and between 25 and 40% silicon are normally avoided because of structural instabilities, presumably of the two compounds, leading to disintegration of the alloys on cooling.

While flue gas scrubbing with alkaline solutions is one of the oldest methods of removing SO2 from flue gas, a satisfactory scrubbing system for this application, which is both technically and economically viable, has yet to be developed. Interest in alkaline scrubbing has continued because of its basic simplicity and comparatively low capital cost. Drawbacks of alkaline scrubbing are the tendency for accumulation of solids to plug the system, scaling, corrosion and erosion problems and the need to dispose of large quantities of waste. Discussed are instrumentation loop applications to a 90,000 cfm alkali scrubbing test facility, the process problems the instrumentation engineer faces in. selection of equipment, the performance of the instruments selected and the problems encountered during start-up. The Test Facility incorporates centralized electronic process control with a digital data acquisition system provided to log process variables and print off normal (alarm) conditions. Flue gas SO2 content is measured by ultra-violet analyzers and analysis of the total gas stream is by gas chromatographs.

To many, petroleum exploration and successful geophysics , are partly synonomous, This is not because natural petroleum is usually concentrated as a liquid, nor certainly not because oil can be detected directly. The reason is Chat geophysics helps to at least better understand and sometimes, to even explain the essential geology involved. That groundwater is similarly a liquid with all but a few of its basic geologic relationships practically identical to petroleum, seems to have escaped many of those most interested and responsible for complete geo-hydrologic knowledge. The paramount need to use every means at our disposal for maintaining and expanding our crustal resources reserves are generally obvious, However, in view of the rapidly mounting requirements, continual re-emphasis is worthwhile.

"The construction of mechanized tunnels in soft ground has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, especially in the control of the face pressure and the closure of the soil-lining void to reduce the induced settlements. On the other hand, several mechanisms of the TBM excavation cycle are still not taken into account for routine design calculations, such as the increment of water pressures in front of the tunnel face, the flow of excavation fluids around the shield, the dynamic equilibrium between the grout pressures and the excavation convergence, among others. This paper discusses specifically the issue of face pressures and how several mechanisms, which are routinely not considered, can be easily verified and incorporated into the state-of-practice of design. INTRODUCTION The stability of underground excavations is traditionally assessed through analytical solutions based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity (Atkinson and Potts 1977; Mühlhaus 1985) or the limit equilibrium method (Anagnostou and Kovári 1994; Messerli et al. 2010). These methodologies depend on the tunnel geometry, certain ground parameters and the support pressure. When conventional construction methods are used, the internal support pressure is an abstract representation of the combined effects of partial excavation, ground reinforcement, and the different support elements. The use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) changed this perspective, as the magnitude of pressures acting on the excavation boundary could be controlled in a more direct way. In front of the TBM the ground is excavated as the cutterhead rotates and the cutting tools scrape the ground from the tunnel face while additives are injected to condition the material. Water, polymers, bentonite, and foam can be used as additives under different conditions (Thewes et al. 2012). The loosened ground with additives, herein referred to as the mixture, flows through the openings at the cutterhead and into the excavation chamber. This mixture is kept pressurized to support the face."

After OSHA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on August 5, 1983, to revise its standards for Underground Construction, many contractors and their representative associations became concerned by the sweeping changes in the proposed rule. After reviewing all of the evidence and testimony on file with OSHA, the contractors presented extensive written and oral testimony to the Department of Labor in Washington, D. C. to help insure that the final published rule would be effective without jeopardizing the economic viability of the industry. The results of those efforts, the entire OSHA rulemaking process, and the opportunity for the construction industry to participate in that process will be discussed.

One of the seemingly eternal problems with which we are frequently faced is that of providing adequate and economical warehousing facilities to store large quantities of bulk product. Seasonal consumption, transportation, marketing, and other factors very often dictate extensive product warehousing requirements for an operation geared for steady, year-around production of a material requiring weather protection during storage. Fertilizers such as potash and urea are examples of such products; the consumption of these materials is extremely heavy in the early spring at which time the materials must be placed in the soil, whereas, for obvious operating efficiencies, production is more or less constant for a given operation throughout the year.
