A cyclone reactor system for the partial reduction and melting of taconite concentrate fines has been engineered, designed and operated. A non-transferred arc plasma torch was employed as a heat source. Taconite fines, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide were fed axially into the reactor, while the plasma gas was introduced tangentially into the cyclone. The average reactor temperature was maintained at above 1673 K (1400 C), and reduction experiments were performed under various conditions. The influence of the following parameters on the reduction of taconite was investigated: carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide inlet feed ratio, carbon monoxide inlet partial pressure, and average reactor temperature. The interactions of the graphite lining with carbon dioxide and taconite were also studied.

Induction time is often referred to the time required to form a stable three-phase contact between a gas bubble and a flat or droplet surface in a liquid medium. It can be used to quantify the attachment process in aflotation system. Various techniques have been developed to measure this important parameter. Due to its importance in flotation systems and other processes, significant advances in refining the induction time measurement techniques have recently been made. This paper summarizes these recent advances and describes a novel method developed to monitor bubble attachment to a pendant bitumen drop or bitumen-coated flat surface. This visualization-based method offers a higher sensitivity and accuracy than the previously developed apparatuses in the induction time measurement. As an example, the induction time for oxygen bubble-bitumen attachment was measured at a fixed bubble size as a function of temperature in two different aqueous solutions. The results showed that higher process temperature is favorable for oxygen bubble-bitumen attachment and hence bitumen flotation. Addition of calcium to the aqueous solution slightly decreased induction time.

INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical's Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). Trona occurs naturally in several physical forms in the Green River basin, being both massive and crystal¬line. Linear meridional zones of bad roof conditions have been frequently encountered in producing collieries working the Permian age Lithgow seam in the western coalfield of New South Wales. The prediction of such zones ahead of mining is desirable for reasons of both safety and economics. In March, 1981, we carried out an experimental, three-component in-seam seismic survey at Invincible Colliery to discover whether such zones have any unambiguous seismic effect. The underground survey was the first of its kind to be attempted in an Australian mine. The data quality was excellent with the spectra broadband and clear. Polarisation analysis disclosed two modes: one compressional; the other shear horizontal. The SH model was clearly dispersive and well gound to the plane of the seam. Modal velocities decreased by up to 15% at the fracture-swarm site. There is a strong suggestion on the RLS maps obtained here that the distributed fault zone is acting as a composite scatterer of channel waves. The P-SV and SH wave tomograms obtained show, in a general way, the distribution of stress in the coal panel.

Selective in-plant breakage was investigated at a Central Queensland, Australia mine. Component seams and size fractions from in-plant samples were characterized petrographically and probability analysis of vitrinite reflectance data used to track the distribution of seam proportions through the plant. Results show that the 2 seams reported differentially to coarse and fine circuits, mainly as a function of coal type rather than rank. Seams were also preferentially concentrated in different size fractions of the coarse circuit. Breakage in the coarse coal centrifuge generated approximately 4% of -0.5 mm fines, but was not seam specific.

INTRODUCTION In Canada, radium-226 is removed from uranium mining and milling effluents by the addition of barium chloride to precipitate barium-radium sulphate. Large settling ponds are provided to effect solid-liquid separation. However, the barium-radium sulphate precipitate [(Ba,Ra)S04] is a fine, slow-settling crystalline solid which is not easily removed by simple sedimentation systems. Consequently, settling pond effluents may contain appreciable quantities of particulate or suspended radium-226, depending upon the specific pond system and/or the time of year considered. Also, current technology is expected to be incompatible with ultimate disposal goals since safe recovery of the barium-radium sulphate sludge from the settling ponds may be difficult to achieve (IAEA, 1976). Under the auspices of Environment Canada, a Government-Industry Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical--chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the Sub-Group recommendations, a bench scale feasibility study began in March 1976 at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada. The bench scale work was expanded and accelerated in 1977 with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the (Ba,Ra)S04 precipitate greatly increased settling rates (Wilkinson and Cohen, 1977). Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was initiated in January 1978; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry as indicated in Table 1. The principal goal of the Joint Government-Industry Program is the development of a physical-chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. The following effluent radium-226 activities were established as targets for the program: 0.37 Bq/L (10 pCi/L) as total radium-226; 0.11 Bq/L (3 pCi/L) as dissolved radium-226. Comminution of various materials can be achieved in grinding equipment by nipping, impact, attrition, or a combination of these actions. Pna mills also known as edgerunners, chasers, and mullers-are classified as a nipping machine. The essential features of this type of grinding machine are rollers or mullers that turn on a horizontal axis while rating on the bed of material in the pan. Ploughs are used to direct the unground material to the center of the pan. Grinding may be accomplished wet or dry. Aritres, Chilean mills, and Huntington mills are types of pan mills. Ring roll and ring Ml mills, another type of nipping machine, were developed for grinding smaller particles of intermediate hardness to product sizes of about 100 pm. They were designed to attempt to reduce the cost of similar size reduction in ball mills and have been widely used to pulverize coal for power-plant facilities. Impact Machines Grinding machines that can be classified as impact mills include: hammer, cage, centrifugal, vibratory, pin, and stamp mills. The distinctive feature of an impact mill is that it has a fast-moving part that transfers some of its kinetic energy to the material particles by direct contact so that internal stresses are created in the particles. The Reitz Disintegrator is an example of an impact mill. It has rigidly mounted hammers attached to a vertical shaft that rotates in close proximity to horizontally mounted screens. Hydrogeological impacts of active longwall mining were studied at two sites in Illinois. At the site with the more transmissive sandstone aquifer, aquifer permeabilities increased an order of magnitude due to subsidence. Piezometric levels declined with subsidence due to increased porosity, and ahead of mining due to a transmitted drawdown. Levels recovered rapidly at first and fully over two years. At the site with the less transmissive aquifer, impacts were similar except that recovery has been limited. Local aquifer enhancement through increased yield can occur, but only where the aquifer is transmissive enough for recovery.

Coal is found in every major geographic region throughout Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852 over 100 small mines have opened and closed. Last years production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure one illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and western United States. The Arctic region of Alaska generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The Central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of western United States. The Southcentral and Southeastern regions has a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the west coast of the United States.

The deformation, failure, and filling characteristics of a caving roof in the initial and normal mining stages of a pitching oblique longwall mining area are analyzed using large-scale threedimensional physical-similitude experiments and numerical calculations to study the characteristics of roof fracture and migration in a steeply dipping seam. The results show that the roof fracture development has evident sequential and spatial characteristics. Among them, immediate roof breaking in different parts of the mining area shows difference in time and space. The failure sequence of the immediate roof in different areas changes with the mining; unique regional stability evolution characteristics are observed in the suspended immediate roof simultaneously, resulting in its significant regional stability on the goaf filling.

Until now, only the range of typical construction projects which are repeated over and over during the life of a coal mine have been discussed. This chapter looks at underground construction projects which occur only once or twice during the life of any given mine and are major construction projects in both time and cost. These projects usually require the services of an outside engineering and construction firm with hands- on experience in design installation. Because of this involvement with engineering and construction firms (EIC), the role of the construction engineer will change from one of actively de- signing and directing tasks to one of planning, inspection, and quality control. To reflect this role change in the discussions, the focus of this chapter will be changed to a broad overview of project participation. Of course, the projects under consideration in this chapter could easily fill more than one book on their design and installation. In addition, major construction projects are extremely site specific, requiring months of data collection about site geology, physical conditions, and potential excavation and construction requirements. Therefore, no attempt shall be made to discuss any detailed construction aspects as was done in earlier chapters. The purpose of this chapter is to present the fundamental concerns of a staff engineer or supervisor. This engineer does not make the decisions on choosing the EIC firm, but assists and interacts with their project team to accomplish the goals set forth by higher management. The construction topics to be reviewed fall into three main categories. The first category is highlighted by the installation of a main surge bin; the second is typified by the construction of an underground shop; and the third category encompasses special projects such as rotary dumps, crusher stations, and foremen's offices. These categories highlight the differences between degrees of mine responsibilities for project completion. The first topic is usually a turnkey project by an E/C firm for a given mine. The second topic represents the leading role of the mine in the project with a contractor as a support service or equipment supplier only. The third topic, special projects, is an example of a joint venture-between a contractor (leading partner) and mine management. These roles can change with any given project, but the changes in management responsibilities for the construction engineer can be nicely illustrated for the purposes of this text. The first step toward constructing major mine projects is to analyze the mine which influence their design. From the mine management standpoint, these parameters should reflect the role the mine will play in the project construction. In other words, what is the nature of the proposed mine environment and what are the material, labor, and time requirements needed to assist or direct the chosen engineering and construction firm? Answering these questions requires some basic project planning and cost estimation work. Here, only a general treatment is necessary, since detailed discussions of these topics will follow in Chapters 8 and 10. For those persons interested in the role of the EIC contractor, I suggest beginning by reviewing the article by Beall, "The Role of an Engineering and Construction Contractor," presented in the October 1980 issue of Mining Engineering magazine.

Effective control of balling line circuits is a problem taconite companies have been dealing with for over thirty years. The sensitivity of balling circuits to changes in moisture, bentonite, concentrate particle size, and other operating parameters are the main reasons for control problems. This paper presents test results and describes the integration of existing instrumentation with a digital image analysis system on a balling circuit. This work has the goal of developing control strategies to automatically adjust water spray and bentonite addition, to optimize the size distribution on the roll screen and reduce the variability in control between balling attendants, resulting in more consistent greenball product quality.

Steel mesh has been used successfully for many years to control friable roof conditions and prevent loose roof and rib material from caving into the roadway. Despite its extensive use, the installation of steel mesh is difficult to automate and many other products have been evaluated as an alternative for skin control. Ideally, the properties of these new products should be similar or better than those of the steel mesh. In particular, development of a strong and resistant shell that minimizes movement along the fractured rock and coal surfaces between the bolt anchors is recommended. A strong surface adhesion and the strength of a reinforced polymer skin can provide the necessary toughening mechanism required to enhance roadway surface support by forming a reinforced polymer/rock surface layer. Most of the Thin Spray-on Liners (TSL) evaluated in the mines are weak with slow curing times, and the plastic mesh currently used to support the coal ribs is relatively weak. Therefore, neither material can seriously compete with steel mesh. Currently, a new polymer product that cures in seconds and forms an instantaneous strata binder that surpasses the properties of steel mesh is under development at the University of Wollongong.

In addition to coalbed thickness and basic coal quality data, coal drill cores can produce design data for coal beneficiation processes. To generate design data, a coal drill core should be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and composition that represents (with the possible exception of top size) a raw coal process stream. Reducing a coal core with a crushing machine rarely accomplishes this representation. This investigation employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis to characterize the core in terms of first-order and zeroth-order break- age rate constants, which are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during handling. To reduce composition variables and conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores, the initial drop-shatter and dry-tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores. Then, cores from three coal beds, Illinois No. 6, Upper Freeport and Pocahontas No. 5, were tested. Comparison of a crushed drill core and a drill core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed.

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. Knowing the location of voids/fractures in roof rock will be greatly helpful for roof support design. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way for determining void location in roof rock. In this research, feed pressure and rotation torque are found to be good indicators for identifying the voids, based on the results of a series of laboratory experiments. A set of computational rules has been developed to locate voids in mine roof using the measured roof drilling parameters and implemented in MRGIS, a software package developed to allow mine engineers to make use of the large amount of roof drilling parameters for predicting roof geology properties automatically. Anew feature, 2D map+3D figure display, is also added to MRGIS.

Chemistry plays a more important role in milling operations than is generally recognized, particularly in fluid- solid separation processes. Chemical aspects are also very important insofar as plant water quality is concerned, and in the manner in which this water quality effects plant design and operation. Aside from the inherent chemical characteristics of plant water, the mineral preparation industry is becoming increasingly more dependent on the use of mining chemical reagents--relatively new to the coal industry, but items of I standard usage in complex metal recovery plants. These chemicals have many useful properties and can produce significant improvements in operations and metallurgical efficiencies when used properly and intelligently. They can produce poor results and sometimes severe losses when used improperly. Most reagents are relatively expensive on a per pound basis, hence costs can be excessive if they are used wastefully or inefficiently.

According to the "Survey of Energy Resources 1980" (1)*, which was prepared by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hannover (FRG)for the World Energy Conference 1980 in Munich, the world coal deposits are assessed at 775 billion tce proven reserves 448 billion tce of them recoverable and 6 161 billion tce additional resources. If one ignores growth rates, the current world coal output of 2,8 billion tpy gives our recoverable reserves a static life expectancy of 175 years. With an average increase in world output of 3,2 % like between 1973 and 1980 this range would be further shortened to an alarming degree. Furthermore, the criteria used to distinguish between workable and unworkable resources give rise to the suspicion that deposit characteristics are not always taken into account to a sufficient degree. For example, little attention is paid to major ?Bonitaet" - factors such as dip and seam thickness. There have been wide-ranging scientific discussions on the lower limit for workable coal resources, but no such limits have been set at the other end of the scale. Otherwise it is well known that performance and costs are badly affected den in level and moderately inclined seams the seam thickness is more than 4 to 5 m, because special mining methods have to be used beyond this limit. These are associated with significantly higher costs than with the winning of seams of ?normal? thickness.
