The goal of the DOE Coal Preparation Program is to provide industry with the scientific and engineering knowledge base to produce economically competitive and environmentally acceptable clean coal products for both existing and new markets. The DOE/PETC in-house program continues to conduct fundamental, exploratory, and applied research in the areas of physical, chemical, and microbial coal beneficiation to assist in meeting these goals and objectives. The Coal Preparation Division now has a new Coal Preparation Process Research Facility that allows continuous bench-scale testing of emerging coal cleaning technologies and ancillary coal preparation equipment at feed rates up to 1,250 kilograms (1.25 tons) per hour. Bench-scale and laboratory-scale research projects at PETC cover areas such as 1) the use of micronized-magnetite for fine-coal, 2) heavy-media cycloning, 3) fine coal reconstitution, 4) development and testing of coal preparation process flowsheet simulators, 5) dry coal beneficiation using electrostatic methods, 6) tracer methods to determine the efficiency of density-based separations, 7) selective oxidation of organic sulfur, and 8) microbial removal of pyrite and organic sulfur from coal. This paper will discuss several of these research areas.

"Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . References are cited that give a general cross section of computer techniques available in the literature, and examples are given in each subdivision to demonstrate basic concepts and the use. of computers in solving the type problems.

The economic developments and industrial behavior patterns that led to a lasting excess capacity in the world non-ferrous metals industries from the aid-1970s are explored. Detailed attention is devoted to analyzing and defining crucial concepts like "capacity", "excess capacity", "capacity maintenance" and "investments". Empirical evidence of capacity utilization and capacity growth in the industries under study is provided. The coincidence of excess capacity and low prices on the one hand, and investments in capacity maintenance and capacity expansion, on the other, is seen as a consequence of substantial declines in the metal industries' investment and production costs during the period studied.

Downhill, or regenerative conveyors have always been a challenge to the design engineer due to their natural instability under load. The last decade has seen the appearance of high tonnage, high negative lift conveyors with several hundred meters of drop. These conveyors have made necessary the development of new braking systems and intelligent drive controls to address their starting and stopping requirements under various load conditions. This paper describes the critical design criteria of large regenerative conveyors and some of the advances in mechanical braking systems and drive control technology developed by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) to address their specific requirements.

The purpose of this paper is to describe work undertaken, within the System Dynamics Research Group at Bradford Management Centre, into the development and application of a System Dynamics model of an international mineral industry; aimed at providing a basis for analysis of the interrelationship of supply, consumption and price over time, under different production and stocking policies. A review is presented of some of the major characteristics and problems associated with such industries. This is followed by an outline description of the model and the way it has been applied to examine various supply responses, in the light of changing consumption patterns. Demonstration results deal with model validation and with analysis of international buffer stocks and conflicting supply policies on the historic situation in the copper industry.

"Two important aspects of excavation performance of TBM are advance rate and cutter replacement/ring consumption, which is closed to the cost and construction duration of the project. To achieve this, a database of TBM parameters and the geological-geotechnical conditions during the excavation of Yinhanjiwei was compiled and analyzed. Relationships between different geological and TBM operational parameters were investigated. Results of analyzes show that there are qualitative correlation between Field Penetration Index (FPI) and rock geological parameters. And strong relationships between FPI and operational parameters are suggested. In this study, the cutter replacement and ring consumption were analyzed using statistical method for preliminary estimation in similar conditions. 1. ITRODUCTION Hard rock TBM is widely used in tunneling project nowadays because of its advantages to conventional drilling and blasting, especially in long tunnels. The biggest advantage is its high advance rate. However, rock conditions of tunnels are complicated. So TBM performance becomes a primary topic in tunneling engineering, which includes of rate of penetration, utilization, daily advancement, cutter consumption and so on. Many prediction models have been developed to estimate the TBM performance in the project planning phase. The most widely accepted and used models around the world are semi theoretical CSM model (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and the empirical NTNU model (Blindheim, 1979, Bruland, 1998).With increasing uses of TBMs in different ground conditions, an increasing number of researchers have developed new models in order to predict the performance of TBM more accurately in similar geological conditions.(Gong and Zhao, 2009; Hassanpour et al.,2009, 2010, 2011, 2014; Delisio et al., 2013; Delisio and Zhao, 2014)"

Vermiculite is the mineralogical name generally applied to a group of hydrated, trioctahedral ferromagnesian aluminum platty or micaceous silicate minerals. In microscopic particles the mineral as mineral is differentiated from montmorillonite by a higher Si:AI ratio of approximately 3:l and a higher layer charge and higher cation exchange capacities. Commercial vermiculite, the vermiculite which is mined, beneficiated, and discussed in this chapter, is an important industrial mineral which is formed by the alteration of macroscopic particles of biotite and iron-bearing phlogopite. In natural form it has the size and shape of mica, while possessing the ion exchangeable properties of zeolites and some clays. Within the internal structure of vermiculite lie water molecules, which when rapidly heated to high temperature, transform into steam causing the vermiculite particles to increase in volume. This process of thermal exfoliation produces a lightweight product which finds use in various construction products, agriculture, horticulture, and other industrial applications. In exfoliated form it has the low density and biological inertness of expanded perlite, while maintaining a chemically active surface. Most of the uses of vermiculite are for the thermally exfoliated material. In addition, the cation exchange potential of vermiculite and its layer-silicate structure are properties which can be used as the basis for numerous products including intumescent coatings and gaskets, inorganic films, and the treatment of nuclear and other toxic waste. When chemically and physically modified, it possesses some properties common to organoclays and synthetic compounds. In high purity concentrates and manufactured products, these properties can be altered and optimized in applications to produce superior performance. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Vermiculite was first described as a mineral by Thomas H. Webb in 1824. Webb believed vermiculite to be a variety of talc and described its diagnostic property of thermal exfoliation thusly: "If subjected to the flame of a blowpipe, or that of a common lamp, it expands and shoots out into a variety of fanciful forms, resembling most generally small worms having the vermicular motion exact." Observing that with one exception, all commercial vermiculite has formed by the alteration of iron-bearing phlogopite, a simple definition of vermiculite might be the alteration product of trioctahedral micas, macroscopic particles of which display marked exfoliation when heated rapidly to temperatures above 374°C (the critical temperature of water). The first vermiculite described was found near Worcester, MA, but it was later pointed out by Brush (1866) that vermiculite had been known for some time in Japan as a children's novelty. Because the techniques for mineral analysis were somewhat primitive com- pared to those routinely available today, and because the structure and crystal chemistry of the micas and related minerals were not widely understood, the early literature generated at least 20 "new" minerals which were nothing more than variations in the color and chemistry displayed by vermiculite. Trade names such as Dugarlite, Mandolitem, Strong-LiteTM, and Zonolitem are sometimes used to denote commercial vermiculite, thermally exfoliated vermiculite and their products. Vermiculite particles resemble mica and vary in color from colorless through tan and green to black, depending on the chemical composition. Most physical and optical properties are close to those of biotite, with perfect basal cleavage, hardness between 1.5 and 2.5 Mohs, and specific gravity between 2.2 to 2.8. Fine-sized particles will feel talcose, especially when wet. However, for commercial vermiculite the diagnostic test is that of thermal exfoliation. Vermiculite can display a wide range of compositions, depending on the composition of the original mica and the change of chemistry during weathering and ion exchange. Chemical data for some commercial vermiculites are given in [Table 1]. There are numerous analyses for vermiculite given in the literature, and the analyses of vermiculites from commercial deposits will fall within the range indicated by the average analysis in the table. Many analyses separate the adsorbed water (H2OP) from crystalline water and water as hydroxyl (H20+). The basis of separation of adsorbed water is generally considered to be 100°C. However, hydrate water within the vermiculite interlayer begins to be lost at 75°C and lower. Therefore, measured water content and loss on ignition are combined in the table as H20[total].

Liquids containing suspended solids are encountered in most mineral processing applications. Solids levels cover a very wide range, from ppm levels in cooling water systems to slurries containing greater than 70% solids. When the aqueous phase is recycled or further processed, a solid/liquid separation process is used. Chemical additives used to carry out this process are called coagulants and flocculants. In other cases, one seeks to control or modify the properties of the suspension. Dispersants are chemicals used to aid in suspending solids in a liquid as well as to control the properties of the resulting suspension. Dispersants find a range of uses in mining and mineral processing such as scale control, filter aids, flotation aids, and slurry viscosity modification. Materials used as dispersants include inorganic salts, alkalies, organic surfactants, and polyelectrolytes. This paper discusses the use of dispersants in mineral processing, with an emphasis on control of slurry viscosity. The mechanism of dispersion and factors that affect the choice of dispersant will be discussed.

The key to concentrator automation is practical means for obtaining continuous assay data from concentrator streams. The technique most successfully used is x-ray fluorescence analysis. The practical reality of on-stream x-ray analysis has been achieved through effort over the past twenty years, marked by an occasional breakthrough, but more typically a step-by-step development to which many individuals and organizations have contributed. The net result of this progress is the present capability to install on-stream x-ray analyzer systems on a turn-key basis. It is now possible to provide all components of an x-ray analysis system as a completely engineered unit which can be put into immediate use, minimizing needs for specialized application know- ledge to benefit from continuous assaying in process control. The economic factors which influence the choice of system and limitations of the x-ray fluorescence technique for slurry analysis are reviewed.

Alkaline solution rinsing for decommissioning of an acid-leached residue was evaluated by column experiments, neutralization tests and solid characterization by XRD and SEM. It was found that consumption of a strong alkali during residue neutralization was much greater than that required to neutralize the soluble acidity. The excess alkalinity was consumed by solid-phase conversions unnecessary for the success of decommissioning. Alkaline rinsing did not reduce the time requirement for decommissioning when compared with plain water rinsing. Since no benefit is gained to compensate for the additional costs associated with excess alkali consumption, we conclude that strong alkaline solution rinsing is in fact inferior to simple water rinsing.

The standard test methods used to determine the pyrite content of coal and mineral wastes, and their propensity to release acidic drainage, are critically reviewed. In addition to analysis of total sulfur by combustion, test methods using selective oxidation of pyrite by HNO3 and H2O2 are available. The oxidation kinetics of pyrite vary appreciably from sample to sample, and it is difficult to ascertain whether complete dissolution has occurred in heterogeneous materials. The reliability, reproducibility and suitability of different standard test methods were studied, using well characterized ore and coal pyrite samples. The kinetics of pyrite dissolution were also investigated. The results are discussed in terms of the fundamental chemical and physical characteristics of each sample, and the implications for waste characterization are considered.

Activated carbon loaded with gold from different halide solutions was characterized by thermal analysis (TA) techniques. The mechanism of gold uptake by carbon varies from predominately adsorption for gold iodide to predominately reduction for gold chloride. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements confirm the existence of adsorbed gold-halide species within the micropore structure of carbon. These results suggest that the ratio of reduced to adsorbed gold increases for gold halides in the following order: Au-I < Au-Br < Au-Cl. In the case of Au-I, TA results for the loaded carbon were compared with pure compounds of 12, Aul and Aul3.

The Tertiary carbonate aquifer of central Florida is composed of about 2/3 calcite and 1/3 dolomite with minor amounts of quartz and apatite. The Mg content of the calcite is lower in the recharge areas than in the deeper confined parts of the aquifer system. Various geochemical lines of evidence indicate that much of the dolomite is of penecontemporaneous origin but that some may have been formed much later, possibly by ground water. Theoretical studies indicate that the Mg/Ca ratio in solutions is about unity for the three-phase equilibrium, calcite-dolomite-water. Solutions, such as ocean water and some subsurface brines, have Mg/Ca ratios higher than one and should represent dolomitizing solutions. In the areas of principal recharge to the Floridan aquifer, ground water is undersaturated with respect to both calcite and dolomite, and the Mg/Ca ratiois as low as 0.05. As the water moves downgradient, the Mg/Ca ratio systematically increases and approaches unity; saturation of the solution with respect to both calcite and dolomite also increases with length of travel in the system. Thus, in the zone of active potable-water circulation, the chemical process is one of dissolution of minerals until saturation is reached or exceeded. However, in the deeper brackish-water zones that underlie peninsular Florida, dolomite may be forming where the Mg/Ca ratio is greater than one. The necessary Mg may be derived from ocean water or brines recycled through the system as the hydrologic regimen is changed. The driving force may be simple mixing, relative fluctuations of sea level, or a combination of mechanisms.

"Top-down wall construction was selected to excavate the tunnel portal headwall areas of the ORB East End Crossing tunnel. Benefits included an expedited construction schedule realized by staging excavation and rock support with development of temporary construction access roads. Rock mass properties, proximity to right-of-way lines, and blasting impacts were considered to design suitable lift heights, intermediate bench locations, and permanent ground support systems to provide supported permanent excavations. Carbonate rock formations contained adverse subsurface geotechnical features including solution cavities, clay seams, weathered joints, pinnacled rock, and boulders, which were addressed by flexibility in design. The resulting over-break conditions and long-term water infiltration issues required economic design solutions. This paper discusses the unique considerations required during design of top-down tunnel portal headwalls excavated in carbonate rock formations including temporary excavation and permanent ground support systems which provided flexibility for unforeseen over-break, minimized construction delays, and provided long-term stability. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East End Crossing is an approximate 8-mile highway connection of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing (ORBEE) project. Currently under construction, this connection will link State Road 265 in Indiana with the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky to form an outer loop bypassing the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. This highway project features a 2,510-foot long, three-span cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River, and a 1,680-foot long tunnel. The project, being managed by the Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2016. The new twin three-lane tunnel under the historic Drumanard Estate requires steep cut excavations for approach and tunnel portal walls on the order of 60 feet deep through overburden soil and carbonate bedrock formations. This paper focuses on the design considerations for the permanent support of the top-down wall construction of the tunnel portal headwalls and approach retaining walls."

The Separation Rapids property, located approximately 60 km (37 miles) north of Kenora, Ontario, Canada, is host to one of the largest rare metal pegmatite deposits in the world. This pegmatite was named the Big Whopper by its discoverer, Dr. Fred Breaks of the Ontario Geological Survey, because of the exceptional length and width of the surface exposure. The property is readily accessible from a main, all-weather road via a network of secondary logging roads. The main line of the Canadian National Railway passes through the village of Redditt, just 40 km (24 miles) south of the property. The Big Whopper is one of the complex-type (petalite sub-type) class of rare metal pegmatites that are geochemically the most highly evolved in the spectrum of granitic pegmatites. Such deposits are economically important as resources for the rare metals lithium, tantalum, cesium, and rubidium. While complex-type pegmatites are found in many areas of the world, most are too small to be profitably mined, however, with an inferred resource in excess of 15 million metric tons (mt) (17 million short tons [st]), the Big Whopper is only the fourth deposit of its type in the world with the size required to be of major economic importance. The other three deposits, which are currently in production, are the Tanco mine in Manitoba, the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe, and the Greenbushes mine in Western Australia. The Big Whopper is situated in the eastern continuation of the Archean Bird River greenstone belt which also hosts the Tanco pegmatite, approximately 60 km (37 miles) to the west. The principal commodities identified in the portions of the Big Whopper pegmatite explored to date are petalite (LiAlSi4010) and rubidium-rich K-feldspar. These are industrial minerals with important applications in the glass and ceramics industries. The Big Whopper also contains substantial quantities of lepidolite, a lithium, rubidium-mica which is the principal ore mineral for rubidium metal. Tantalum and cesium occur in anomalous levels with the petalite mineralization, and the possibility of finding zones of high enrichment in these valuable high-tech metals elsewhere in the deposit is excellent. Such enriched zones are typical of pegmatites as highly evolved as the Big Whopper. To date, the geological mapping and diamond drilling work completed by Avalon have delineated the Big Whopper pegmatite system over a strike length exceeding 1.5 km (0.9 miles), over widths ranging from 10 m to 80 m (30 feet to 260 feet) in thickness, and to a vertical depth of close to 300 m (1,000 feet), where it remains open. The pegmatite system consists of a vertically oriented massive petalite pegmatite dyke striking 280 degrees that is flanked by amphibolites containing a swarm of narrower albite and petalite dykes which have all undergone intense deformation in a high strain zone resulting in folding and intense shearing. The Big Whopper exhibits a mineralogical zonation pattern which is complicated by the superimposed deformation that has both folded and stretched the deposit. Drilling has defined a dilute geological resource totaling 7.1 million mt (7.8 million st) grading 1.283 percent Li20, 0.346 percent Rb20, and .007 percent Ta205 over a strike length of 600 m (2,000 feet), and to a vertical depth of 250 m (820 feet), where it remains open. The petalite and rubidium-rich-K-feldspars contained in the Big Whopper all appear to be of superior quality. The grades are consistent with a petalite content averaging 25-30 percent and a rubidium-rich-K feldspar content averaging 15-20 percent. The remainder of the rock consists mainly of albite, several types of mica, and quartz. Accessory minerals include columbitetantalite, cassiterite, apatite, garnet, and gahnite. Market studies show that the deposit is located close enough to existing transportation infrastructure to access rapidly growing, major markets in the glass and ceramics industries, both in the northeastern U.S. and Europe. There are only three competing lithium minerals producers in the world with the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe being the only major producer of petalite. The other lithium deposits produce spodumene, a less desirable lithium mineral. Lakefield Research Limited has successfully designed a process to produce an ultra-pure petalite concentrate containing up to 4.65 percent lithium oxide, and as little as 0.014 percent iron oxide, low levels of soda and potash, and negligible amounts of other trace elements. With these specifications, Avalon will have an excellent quality product for glass-ceramics applications such as Corningware®, CERAN® stove tops, and other thermal shock-resistant products. Lakefield is presently designing the balance of the flowsheet to produce separate concentrates of rubidium-rich K-feldspar, albite, mica, tantalum, tin, and high-purity quartz. Initial test work indicates that the feldspar products will be of exceptional quality. The K-feldspar concentrates contain 11-12 percent K20 and 1 percent Rb20, while the sodaspar contains over 10 percent Na20, and both have very low iron (0.01 percent Fe203). A preliminary economic model shows that with an initial production rate of 90,000 mt (100,000 st) per year, expanding to 170,000 mt (190,000 st) per year over 5 years, the project is capable of generating over CDN $10 million per year in pre-tax cash flow by year 5 on a capital cost of approximately CDN $30 million.

Allis Mineral Systems&apos; Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company&apos;s [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant&apos;s rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

Capital investments are made for a variety of reasons, ranging from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company&apos;s capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals, which lie beyond the firm&apos;s current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company&apos;s future competitive position.

Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system&apos;s performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

INTRODUCTION The British mining industry comprises 228 nationalised coal mines producing some 113 million tonnes of deep mined coal and employing 242,600 persons of whom 185,200 work below ground. There are in addition 174 small privately-owned coal mines employing 1500 persons underground and producing 1.5 million tones of coal. In the non-coal sector there are 108 privately-owned mines producing some 20 different minerals, including tin, wolfram, fluorspar, potash, rock salt, china clay, ball clay and fireclay. There are currently 4,100 persons employed in these mines of whom 2,346 are employed below ground. One mine producing potash employs 870 persons of whom 465 are underground workers. Since 1975 all matters relating to the health and safety of persons at work and of the general public who are exposed to industrial hazards have come within the purview of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate (MQI) is a constituent part of that organisation and enforces legislation applicable to all mines and quarries. The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) is a statutory and independent body that was established in 1970 to advance knowledge and provide information and advice about radiological protection. The NRPB has an agency agreement with HSE to provide advice and services relating to radiological protection, including protection against exposure to radon decay products in mines. There are as yet no statutory requirements controlling exposure to this source of radiation in Britain. Investigations for the presence of radon in British coal mines were begun in the mid 195Os. The concentrations found were of low order, typically around 2 pCi/l (Duggan et al., 1968). This was not surprising since big coal mines are well ventilated to control methane and airborne dust and it is now generally accepted that radon and its decay products do not constitute a health hazard in British coal mines. At one or two small mines where igneous intrusions were in close proximity to the coal workings, slightly higher readings were recorded. The MQI then commissioned NRPB to make investigations at metalliferous mines and in these much higher readings were detected. It was later agreed that the NRPB should undertake a survey of all non-coal mines in Britain to establish the extent of the problem. This survey was conducted mainly in 1973, (Strong et al.,1975) and follow-up surveys at various mines have since been conducted by the MQI. These investigations revealed that radon readings could be high in mines producing tin, haematite and fluorspar. Some small mines working other minerals in the same localities also showed high readings. More recently owners have been making environmental measurements at mines where there was some cause for concern. LEGISLATION AND RADIATION STANDARDS As a result of the survey work for MQI the Board in 1975 recommended an occupational limit of 4 WLM in a year from radon decay products together with a programme of radiological supervision (Strong et al., 1975). The MQI accepted the recommendation and advised employers and employees that the 4 WLM limit should be adopted. The limit corresponds to a concentration of 0.3 WL, equivalent to 30 pCi/l of radon-222 in equilibrium with the decay products, and was in accordance with an earlier recommendation by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1959). ICRP recommendations are usually endorsed in Britain. It was recognised that some years would probably be required to achieve general compliance, and this is proving to be the case. Some confusion has been caused in Britain by the conflict between successive Euratom Directives on this and other standards of safety. As relative newcomers to the Community, we were not affected by earlier Directives, but the situation is different now. In 1959, the Commission of the European Communities provisionally recommended a maximum permissible concentration for radon-222 and daughters of 3 x 10-7 µCi/cm3, which corresponds to 300 pCi/l (CEC, 1959). The number was affirmed in 1962 (CEC, 1962) and reaffirmed in 1966 (CEC, 1966) but without any specification of the state of equilibrium. In 1976, the CEC again recommended 300 pCi/l, but on this occasion, the daughters were assumed to be present in the same quantities as in unfiltered air (CEC, 1976): this implies 40 WLM a year in poorly-ventilated mines. The formula is repeated in the latest version of the Directive (CEC, 1980), but the value is now said to be an interim one because it might not ensure compliance with the appropriate dose limit. ICRP (1955) recommended 300 pCi/l in equilibrium with the decay products in 1955 and reduced this value to 30 pCi/l for unfiltered air in 1959 (ICRP, 1959), endorsed it for equilibrium conditions in 1976 (ICRP, 1976), and held to it until 1980: these values imply respectively 40 and 4 WLM a year. The recent recommendation of the ICRP (1980) that the annual limit of intake for the decay products should be 0.02 J in a year corresponds to 5 WLM, but there is a rider that reduction should be made for exposure to gamma rays and long-lived airborne radioactivity. Dramatical increase in the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has led to the climate change, which poses a significant threat to human life on Earth. CO2 sequestration via mineral carbonation is the one of the most effective method for mitigating global warming, and is the only way that could store CO2 permanently. In recent years, integrating mineral carbonation via ultramafic mine deposit has received significant attention due to its high potentiality towards commercial application. This review compiles the work conducted by various researchers over the last few years on integrated mineral carbonation processes in mining industry, which use the mine waste materials as CO2 feedstock for mineral carbonation. This paper initially introduces the basic theory of mineral carbonation, with a brief description of various techniques that enhance the rate of mineral carbonation. The enhanced mineral carbonation strategies include pre-treatment of feedstock by thermal, chemical and mechanical activation, and carbonation in a direct or indirect carbonation routes under gas/solid phase or aqueous phase. This paper then introduces the scope of application of integrated mineral carbonation. This includes the types of mine suitable for integrated mineral carbonation, the properties of mine waste materials preferable for CO2 sequestration, and the worldwide locations potentially viable for integrated mineral carbonation. Moreover, this paper critically reviews and discusses the integrated mineral carbonation process in mining industry. The integrated mineral carbonation processes include modified passive carbonation techniques at tailing dams, and ex-situ carbonation routes using fresh tailings. The focus of the discussions is the role of reaction condition on the carbonation efficiency of mine waste with various mineralogy, and the drawback of each integrated mineral carbonation process. All the discussions lead to the suggestions on the technology improvement in the integrated mineral carbonation process. Finally, this paper reviews the economical assessments on the existing integrated mineral carbonation process. Literature to date indicates that the value-add by-products (i.e. recovered metals, valuable carbonated products) play an important role in commercialization of an integrated mineral carbonation process.
