The Montana Operations of the Anaconda Company constitute an integrated, though geographically separated, non-ferrous metal production complex. The mines are located at Butte and consist of one large open-pit mine, two small underground mines, a precipitation plant for both underground and pit-dump leach water, and the Weed Copper Concentrator. The smelter, located at Anaconda, Montana 25 miles to the west, processes all Butte copper shipments as well as copper materials from both Anaconda and private mines. Copper and zinc are refined at Great Falls, Montana, 165 miles to the north. Other facilities developed over the years include the Anaconda Forest Products Division, the Butte, Anaconda, and Little. Chicago Water Companies, and the Montana Hardware Company. Data processing for these operations has been performed on an IBM 360 Series, Model 30 computer, utilizing a Disc Operating System. This was replaced in September 1970 with a 360 Series, Model 40 128K unit. In addition, some data processing is also done for Anaconda Company operations located at Britannia Beach, British Columbia; Columbia Falls, Montana; Yerington, Nevada; and Twin Buttes and Tuscon, Arizona. The material under discussion in this paper will be concerned primarily with the mining operations at Butte.

In recent years, a new concept in the control of electrically powered excavators has come into existence. The new type of control system has come to be known as "static" control. The use of the name "static" to describe this system is somewhat misleading since this term refers only to one of the many advantages of this very important advance in excavator control systems. In 1959, the first truly "static" control for Ward-Leonard equipped electric excavators was designed, developed and placed in service. The control system, originally intended only as a more modern electronic type of alternate to the tried and proven rotating amplifier control system then in use, has since proven to be much more.

Among the methods of mineral processing, gravity concentration methods are, probably, those which have lower costs, higher capacities and lower operational complexity. In order to be really effective, these methods require a feed size distribution in which the particles are liberated. Further, there must be a significant difference (usually higher than 1-1.5) among the real densities of the particles. However, in most cases, the traditional gravity concentrators (jigs, shaking tables, spirals and dense medium hydrocyclones) lose efficiency (sharpness of cut and recovery) when the mean diameter of particles are lower than 0.05mm and the difference among densities are smaller than 1. Most gravity concentrators developed in the last 20 years are based on the use of centrifugal forces that create large "apparent gravitational gradient" seeking to overcome the limitations of particles size distribution. This paper presents the experience of the CVRD Research Center in evaluation and development of new process based on using this new generation of gravity concentrators.

It is estimated that millions of tons of coal fines are unsaleable each year due to difficulty of drying them economically with conventional mechanical dewatering and thermal drying equipment. The difficulty is due to the fact that coal of small particle size presents a large surface area with polar groups which have a great affinity for water. In order to remove this water thermally, a high temperature is necessary which oxidizes the surface of the coal. This substantially reduces the heating value of the coal. If drying could be satisfactorily carried out at a lower temperature, much more of the heating value of the coal fines could be retained. It was conjectured that acoustic energy applied during the drying process might prove to be of value since acoustic energy has the property of producing cavitation at a liquid-solid interface when the intensity is sufficiently great. This cavitation process produces water at room temperature which can be carried away from the solid surface by a flow of relatively cool air. Hence, moisture removal is made possible at a lower temperature.

Este artículo analiza la nueva producción de cobre a partir de "minerales de desecho" de baja ley usando la tecnología de Blue Planet Strategies DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment, por sus siglas en inglés), que tiene como objetivo salvar la brecha de procesamiento entre la solución débil de lixiviación en operaciones de extracción por solventes/electrowinning (SX/EW), removiendo electroquímicamente los metales a partir de corrientes débiles y a la vez generando productos concentrados en metales objetivo en un análogo funcional de extracción por solventes (SX). Se estudió el tratamiento de la débil solución de lixiviación pregnant (PLS por sus siglas en inglés) y se usó para estimar los impactos económicos y de producción para una hipotética lixiviación en pilas de cobre brownfield y una operación aumentada DEMET usando SX/EW para tratar el "mineral de desecho." Se presenta la remoción de cobre a un 86% de eficiencia en las placas por debajo de 0,1 g/L de cobre con un consumo de energía de 0.55 kWh/lb de cobre y una concentración del producto mayor a 10 g Cu/L. El modelamiento arrojó aproximadamente $2/ lb para la producción total de cobre y costos de tratamiento menores o iguales a $1/lb con un inmediato aumento del margen bruto de operación del 12% para el brownfield incrementado. Se indicó también un aumento de la vida de la mina con un margen bruto promedio de 38% en la producción aumentada de "mineral de desecho" con valores de cobre de $3.25/lb.

Precious metals have been sought by man through time. The search has been the cause of many historic events as well as the founding of the famous Mexican, Minion centers of Durango, Guanajuato, Zacatecas and others. Bacis, a silver - cold deposit in the State of Durango was one of the lesser known centers established during Spanish colonial times. During the past year, metal prices have suffered a substantial decline, resulting in the closure of many mines. Through astute exploration, development and exploitation of the mine, the effect of the low prices has been offset and the mine is surviving these hard times.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. The Iron Ore Industry has perhaps seen more varied and drastic changes in its approach to crushing and grinding in the last 5 years than any of the other mineral industries, Multimillion ton per year plants have become common place. Centralized control and computers have become an established benefit. Autogenous grinding along with a variety of rod and ball grinding flowsheets are in use. This morning I will discuss a few of the more important and new concepts in the control of these crushing and grinding circuits.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted a multi-faceted geomechanics research project at a bump-prone longwall coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This mine presented a unique opportunity to study coal mine bumps in that the problem appeared to be confined to areas beneath a sandstone channel of limited areal extent. The Bureau's research plan sought to exploit the uniqueness of the site by monitoring strata behavior and longwall support reactions as the longwall face approached and passed beneath a sandstone channel. The study incorporated static pillar stress and strata deformation measurements, shield support leg pressure measurements, and microseismic monitoring as well as geologic mapping and the collection of observational data. Data collection was underway when a major coal bump occurred on the longwall face at the mine. Pillar behavior (load and deformation), shield loading, and microseismic activity were monitored prior to, during, and after the bump. Observations in the tailgate indicated that these pillars were failing prior to and after the face bump. Shield load data which were evaluated in an effort to identify trends which could be used to forecast coal bumps appear to provide a measure of the effectiveness of destressing operations conducted on the face (e.g. shot firing). Analyses of microseismic data revealed anomalous values associated with microseismic "energy" prior to the face bump. In addition, microseismic source location data and underground observations provided some insight as to the sequence of pillar and face bumps.

Abstract. The commercial importance of hydroxyoximes as extractants for copper has given impetus to basic studies on the chemistry of metal extraction by these compounds. The discovery of accelerator compounds which produce catalytic effects on hydroxyoxime extraction rates has led to mechanistic studies of these rate processes. While these studies have highlighted the importance of interfacial chemical reactions in the extraction process, it is not yet possible to unambiguously describe the mechanisms of metal extraction in these systems or the associated catalytic effects. This paper reviews progress in understanding the mechanism of metal extraction by hydroxyoximes.

Hydrostatic trunnion bearings were recently provided on large Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills driven by wraparound motors assembled on the head to shell flanges. A conventional SAG mill would have a ring gear driven through one or two pinions. The effects of the magnetic air gap forces from this new SAG mill drive arrangement on the performance of the bearing are discussed. A step-by-step systematic analytical de-sign of the hydrostatic trunnion bearing is presented, followed by a discussion of grinding mill erection requirements to conform with the design. A brief comparison with other bearing types and their response to the effects of magnetic air gap forces are also presented.

The deposition of metastable carbonate minerals in ar. aid, sheltered, coastal environment, leads to the formation of a flat, coastel, sabkha plain. The ground waters of the sabkha plain are modified by evaporation, precipitation of salts and reaction between ions in solution and the host carbonates. The resulting brine is similar to those found in fluid inclusions associated with Mississippi Valley type deposits. The aragonite and high magnesium calcite found in the sediments can concentrate lead and zinc from sea water. On diagenesis the lead and zinc are released into the sabkha brines.

The recovery of heavy minerals by gravity concentration during grinding is practised widely in the minerals industry. Studies have shown that the grade and recovery of the concentrate depends not only on the performance of the concentrator but also on the degree of liberation achieved in the mills and the scavenging action of the hydrocyclones closing the grinding circuit. In the current study, consideration is given to the development of mathematical models to quantify and unify the operations of comminution, liberation, classification and concentration. The models are based on test work done at production scale with gold ore.

Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. The Zoro pegmatite project in east-central Manitoba occurs 20 km east of the historic mining town of Snow Lake. A composite sample (Master Comp) was prepared fromthree pegmatite zones within Zoro Dyke “D1” including the North, Central, and South Zones for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample crushed to ca. P80 of 600 μm to determine the overall mineral assemblage, liberation of spodumene, and assess the potential recovery of spodumene by flotation. XRD and QEMSCAN results show that the sample consists of spodumene (10.5%), quartz (29.3%), plagioclase (29.0%), K-feldspars (21.3%), micas (5.1%), tourmaline (2.9%), and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1%). Spodumene is well liberated (88%), but also forms complex particles (7%), and middlings with quartz (4%). Liberation of spodumene increases from 81 in the + 600 μm to 95%in the − 106 μm size fraction. Liberation of quartz, feldspars, and micas account for 89%, 94%, and 83%, respectively. Electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS showed that the average Li concentration is 3.7% in spodumene, 2196 ppm in micas, 1001 ppm in tourmaline, and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Thus, spodumene accounts for 96%, micas 2%, Fe-Mn phosphates 1%, and both K-feldspars and tourmaline for < 1% of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other than spodumene carriers. Heavy liquid separation was conducted on the Master Comp which was crushed to − 6.4 mm, while the − 600 μmfractionwas removed fromthis test. The coarse fraction − 6.4mm/+ 600 μmwas subjected to HLS tests with eight heavy liquid-specific gravity cut-points (2.65 to 3.10 g/cm3). HLS indicates that it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate (close to 6% Li2O) after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.

Seismic tomography is one of several additions to the suite of geotechnical engineering tools for use in various underground rock and mineral geologic structures. Seismic tomography is a method for reconstructing a cross section of an object based on attributes of seismic energy that have been transmitted through the object. The in-seam seismic tomogram provides a dataset that can be graphically portrayed in a color-coded format that is then used to infer relative stress concentration (Fig. 1). During the past several years, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) at its Denver, CO and Twin Cities Research Centers in Minnesota funded several innovative hardware and software developments. These were directed toward use of in-seam seismic tomography for underground geologic strata evaluations. These preliminary investigations have matured into well-defined and field-proven technical advances for improving ground-control decision making in the mining industry.

Minerals, together with agricultural and forestry products, are the primary source of wealth produced in the United States. Although the production of minerals requires only a small fraction of the state&apos;s total land surface, as compared with either agriculture or forestry (Table 1), mining activities generally are much more disruptive to the land surface, and rehabilitation is more complex and costly. The past 10 to 15 years have witnessed a sharp increase in mineral exploration and mining, particularly coal mining, which has brought with it an increase in conflict over land use and an increase in negotiations for purposes of mineral prospecting and mining. The general increase in the production and consumption of coal and the particular increase in the percentage of coal extracted by surface mining methods coupled with a growing nationwide environmental consciousness have created increased public concern and in some cases outrage over mining activities. Although there is ample evidence to indicate that it is possible to plan for and design mining activities in such a way that they are compatible with other activities and can thus be made a part of a sequential land-use plan, there is a general lack of knowledge regarding the importance of mining as the provider of basic and essential raw materials to supply society&apos;s constantly expanding and increasing mineral needs. This lack of knowledge extends to such matters as land and mineral rights negotiations, the character of mineral deposits and minerals, mineral economics, and land-use planning.

While preparing this paper, I soon realized I had a problem in defining what injuries should be classified as "personal." Admittedly, in some cases, falls of persons, sprains and strains, pulling and pushing injuries, and back injuries may have been caused by the individual. But, I believe the number of injuries directly attributed to an individual&apos;s carelessness is relatively small in comparison to the total number of injuries in those categories. For discussion purposes, the injuries most often considered to be personal, that is, caused by individuals are those classified as back injuries. My paper will be devoted to back injuries because this category represents the greatest number of injuries occurring in coal mining. A man&apos;s best friends are his wife, his back, and his dog. The back, however, has a reputation of not being as faithful as his other two friends.1 "Industrial back injury is one of the major occupational health problems plaguing industry to- day. According to national surveys, back injury accounts for more lost time than any other occupational injury and costs companies thousands of dollars in compensation, medical fees and over- time pay."2 A study conducted by USA Today found that back ailments afflict an estimated 75 million Americans, have totally disabled about 2.5 million adults, lead to as many as 200,000 required surgeries each year, are a leading cause of absenteeism and disability, are the second leading cause of hospitalization, are responsible for 18 million doctor visits a year and cost about 93 million work-days annually. The cost to industry is estimated at $14 billion a year.3 During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, this effort has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. Back injuries should be of the utmost concern to everyone here today. I don&apos;t need to tell you what the incidence rate is for back injuries, nor will I use any statistics to inform you of the incidence rate for the coal mine industry or any specific mine. It is only important to know that the number of back injuries is excessive. Back in- juries resulting from lifting have been and continue to be one of the most constant and undiminishing problems in the occupational environment. The fact is, we use our backs to per- form work that the back was not designed to do. Historically, manual materials handling related accidents have consistently accounted for the largest percentage of all industrial accidents. In fact, over 25 percent of all industrial accidents are related to handling of materials.4 In underground coal mining operations, material handling accidents account for even larger percentage of lost time injuries. In 1983, for example, they accounted for 34 percent of all lost time injuries and 32.6 percent of all non-lost time injuries. 5 I want to use one example of a task that will illustrate what I have just said: the building of a concrete block stopping. Each solid concrete block will weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. To build a stop- ping 6 feet high and 20 feet wide will take approximately 80 blocks. On the average, these 80 blocks will be handled at least four times from loading into the conveyance for transportation to being placed while constructing the stopping. Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960&apos;s. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. Technology Surface mining is the safest and most economical way to produce raw materials from the earth&apos;s crust. It also affords a more healthier working environment for the individual miner. The hydrothermal agglomerating process described (U.S. Pat. 3,235,371, (1966)) is different from the conventional high temperature processes. Green pellets or briquettes made with mixtures of moist iron ore concentrates and burned or hydrated lime fines are hardened in an autoclave at 198°C and under steam pressure for 1/2 to 5 hours, with or without previous drying. Under the neutral conditions, oxidation of magnetite does not occur as in the conventional processes. The resulting agglomerates are hard and resistant to abrasion and weathering, and they do not disintegrate in the Linder test. The equipment required for the process is not complicated, and favorable operating costs are projected because of the low temperature and efficient heat recuperation. A low capital investment makes the process attractive even when the annual pellet production is below a million tons.
