Explosions and fires originated from longwall gob due to the formation of methane-air mixture have been a severe threat to coal miner’s lives.Many numerical studies on coalmine fire and explosion hazards have focused on the airflow in roadways and mine gobs. However, most of these studies isolate the gob from its surrounding roadways, and the network analysis and the CFD method are applied independently tomodel the two classes of airflows. This approach greatly limits the ability of simulatingmine ventilation flow, especially unable to consider the effects of gob boundary conditions on air exchange between the gob and the surrounding airways. An innovative finite tube method (FTM) is developed to couple the one-dimensional mine ventilation network (MVN) and the 2D/3D gob flow field (GFF). In FTM, GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes each of which is formed by any two adjacent stream lines. These tubes, representing the gob’s field flow, connect the MVN into a new coupling network. To solve the coupling model betweenMVN and GFF, an iterative solution technique is developed inwhich the MVN analysis is used to evaluate the boundary pressures for GFF simulation and in turn the FTM feeds the GFF results back to the coupling network. Based on the FTM approach, a model for gas migration in gob has been established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion. A computer program is developed to implement the FTM simulation. An illustrative example with five flow tubes representing the GFF is created to verify the stability and convergence of the FTM solution process. A simulation example also indicates that the accuracy of FTM is improved by 12% compared with previous method. Results of an application case show that the program is capable of quantitatively evaluating the gob’s risk zones prone for spontaneous combustion and gas explosion as well as performing risk analysis for various ventilation scenarios.

Southern Arizona has one of the world's principal concentrations of copper ore bodies. Twenty miles south of Tucson, close to the Mexican border at Sahuarita in Pima County, is the Twin Buttes mine. In mid-1973, the Anaconda Company and American Metals Climax Incorporated (AMAX) established a 50-50 partnership to operate and expand the Twin Buttes property. Anamax Mining Company was established as the operating company for this joint venture. The production from the Twin Buttes mine is shared between the two partners who market independently. A major expansion of the Twin Buttes operation has included an accelerated stripping programrne for the pit, an expansion of the sulphide concentrator, the construction of an oxide leach plant and a 57 MW diesel generating power station. Part of this major expansion, the large tonnage oxide processing plant was brought on stream in 1975 and is now close to design capacity. The "mine to market gap" has been closed by producing high-purity copper cathodes at the mine site from oxide ore reserves. By using a hydrometallurgical process route, copper production is possible with negligible effects on the environment.

Central Mexico's mining districts, opened centuries ago during the Spanish conquest, still form the backbone of metal mining in the country today. Beginning at Chihuahua City, the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion traveled southeast from camp to camp through this major mining area to Taxco. Improved exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation methods have permitted continuous mining of many old deposits, and led to the discovery of new ones. Minerals not sought by early miners-lead, zinc, copper, and fluorite-now contribute substantially to mining activity in central Mexico. Of Mexico's five physiographic provinces, the rail excursion passed through two: the Mesa Central, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Mesa Central province is a wide tableland with basin and range topography, containing important base metal deposits. Mining in this region is primarily of limestone replacement ore bodies. Massive deposits form horizontal mantos or vertical chimneys. In northern Zacatecas, the Santa Eulalia and Naica mines demonstrated this character. The Sierra Madre Occidental lies west of Mesa Central in northern states, then widens to almost the entire width of the country from outside Mexico City to the southern border. The area consists of volcanic beds, several kilometers thick. These intermediate volcanics are primarily andesitic, of Tertiary age. Resting on older strata of adjoining physiographic divisions, the volcanic beds are overlain by a thick series of acidic flows and tuffs. Economic mineralization in the Sierra Madre Occidental is vein-type, primarily gold and silver. Mines at Fresnillo, Guanajuato, Pachuca, and Taxco contribute to the claim that this region is the center for precious metals in Mexico. A third type of mineralization, contact metamorphic deposits, is commercial at Santa Eulalia. First Stop, Santa Eulalia Mine tours began with the Santa Eulalia unit, located 25 km east of Chihuahua City. Mining in the region dates back to the early 1700s. The oxidation zone was worked until 1790, but mining declined until Asarco arrived in the early 1900s, building a selective flotation plant for treating primary sulfides. Asarco still owns 34% of Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), operator of the Santa Eulalia mine. Santa Eulalia currently has a milling capacity of 850 t/d. The San Antonio and Buena Tierra mines provide feedstock. Head grades at San Antonio, the mine participants toured, average 80-120 g/t of silver, 1.5-4.5% lead, 4-16% zinc, and 0.1-2.5% copper. Tin and vanadium were also recovered between 1930 and 1940. Estimated proven and probable reserves total about 7.6 Mt, although 1.8 Mt of reserves are located in areas of high water pressure and volume, which makes extraction difficult. Water is a significant production problem at the San Antonio mine. In one area, an AX drill hole encountered 2.6 m3/min (700 gal/min) at a pressure of 2.5 kPa. In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the 'Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of 'orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service (NPS) conducted a research program from mid-1975 to early 1978 to measure alpha radiation levels in natural caves which it administers. Subsequently, a long-term management program was developed which has conducted routine monitoring of radiation levels and has computed employee exposure accumulations in certain NPS caves. The overall program: research and management; was undertaken to evaluate the possible health hazard to cave visitors, interpreters, researchers, maintenance personnel, concessions employees and other workers and to protect their health. The results of this work have been reported extensively elsewhere (see References 1 through 3, 5, 6, 9 through 13, and 14 through 26). This paper deals with the relation of radon gas and daughter produced radiation levels to the cave air flows which mobilize them. These flows are a function of interior cave and exterior ambient air temperatures and pressures and of the cave's geophysical configuration. The low-level, ionizing radiation is produced by minute concentrations of radon and thoron gases which emanate from within caves. Because of confinement, the radiation levels are often appreciably higher than in surface atmospheres. Subsequent radioactive disintegration of the gases into their ionized "daughter" products, which are particulates, permits distribution of the alpha radiation throughout a cave system. The extent and character of this distribution depends upon the particular cave and the air flows which it produces. Thus, the alpha radiation serves as a "tracer" to describe the flows. The flow analysis is divided into two parts: 1) A qualitative description with respect to the two basic geophysical cave types over both long-term (annual) and short-term (diurnal to weekly) periods. 2) A quantitative description of the unsteady, uniform and non-uniform, one-dimensional, incompressible motions for both influent and effluent air flow situations in both basic geophysical cave types. A part of the qualitative description presents "Special Measurement" data: Tsivoglou [vs.] Kusnetz working levels, Tsivoglou individual daughter levels and free ion concentrations, radon gas concentrations, and equilibrium ratios. A great deal of important work has been carried out by Mr. Bobby C. Carson, Cave Radiation Technician at Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. He reports these findings later in this conference (Ref. 6). Some of his results have been used here to establish the cave air flow analysis. Other National Park Service personnel have made measurements at others of the caves for which data are reported here. All of this work and cooperation has been vital to the success of this research program. It is very much appreciated. THEORETICAL FLOW DESCRIPTION Previously reported research (See Ref's. 20, 21, 23 and 25) has established the qualitative relationship between the alpha radiation in caves and their natural air flows. The radiation serves as a representation of these air flows. Changes in radiation with time represent changes in the main forces which produce the air flows. The quantitative data have substantiated that [all caves in which the primary cause of air flow is due to temperature produced gravity (density) gradients and also having minimal man-made disturbances, experience seasonal variations in airborne alpha radiation. The radiation levels increase in summer but decrease in winter], based upon seasonal air movements through each cave system which occur naturally. Two general types of physical cave configurations which control the air flows have been identified as: 1. Those which go up into a hillside or mountainside: Type I ("Upside-down" = USD). 2. Those which go down into the earth; Type II ("Right-side-up" = RSU). These act to control the air flows seasonally. The summer increase in Type I caves is due to increased air flows, whereas in Type II caves it results from stagnation or reduced air flows. This seeming paradox is explained by the physics of the air flow regime in each cave type and has been detailed elsewhere [Ref's. (20), (22) through (25)]. It[ i] true, in general, that air flow decreases airborne radiation in the [immediate vicinity] in which it occurs. Any paradox results from subsequent distribution throughout the case as to [ how] the air moves through a cave [system] with respect to time and space. Exceptions to the cave air flow "rule" are: 1. Caves in which pressure gradients and pressure fluctuations [predominate] in producing the air flows. 2. Caves in which man-made effects and management practices are superimposed on the natural air flow regime. Man-made disturbances which can alter the natural cave air flows are tunnels, elevator shafts, bore holes, sealed and closed portals, etc. If these are not properly sealed, the natural air flows which they change will totally alter the distribution and seasonal variations of the alpha radiation levels. These exceptions may act separately or in combination.

The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research on jackleg use and related accidents in underground metal mines. This paper provides an analysis and overview of jackleg drill usage, accidents, operational characteristics and alternatives, based on information from injury reports, legacy research, stakeholder input and published literature. The results indicate that jackleg drills are involved in more groundfall accidents in underground metal mines than any other drill, and jackleg-drill-related injuries are most prevalent at the face in the course of installing initial ground support. Practical mechanized alternatives to jackleg drills for drilling and bolting under incomplete support in narrow underground openings have not yet been realized. Small, versatile mechanized bolting equipment needs to be developed to address jackleg-drill-related accidents and improve safety at mines where jackleg drills are being used. IntroductionJackleg drill is a generic name for a handheld, rotary, percussion rock drill equipped with an attached reaction leg to provide stability and thrust (Fig. 1). All of the drill and leg controls are located near the operator’s handle at the rear of the head portion of the drill. Jackleg drills are classified according to the bore size of their pneumatic pistons, which normally range from 6.03 to 8.26 cm (2.375 to 3.25 in.) (Kurt, 1982; Clark, 2012). Jackleg drills typically weigh 46.7 kg (103 lb), but the weight can approach 54.4 kg (120 lb) after being fitted for operation with drill steel and air and water hoses (McKibbin and Clark, 2001). In underground mines, jackleg drills are commonly used to drill 3.8-cm (1.5-in.) diameter holes up to 1.83 m (6 ft) deep in rock."

The close area! relationship of Cretaceous or later intrusive porphyries to larger hydrothermal deposits of Pb, Zn, Au, fig, Cu, Mo, Hg,, and U of similar age in the Basin Range Province, was statistically shown in a recent paper (Stringham1) During the past year this study has been expanded to cover p11 of the larger hydrothermal deposits of similar nature occurring in the entire western United States. The sandstone type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming have been excluded since considerable controversy exists regarding their origin. The close relationship between intrusives in general and hydrothermal ore deposits has long been-recognized, but the association involving intrusive porphyry only, was suggested in 1954 when Sales concluded that the formation of porphyry may be an intermediate stage of activity between the development of granitoid rock and certain types of copper deposits. However: he applied this concept to only a few copper deposits. The relationship appears to be true also for a great majority of the hydrothermal deposits of the other metals mentioned above of Cretaceous and later age, at least in the western United States. This situation then leads to the conclusion then when exploring for similar types of hydrothermal deposits of the metals considered one may feel reasonably sure that if an intrusive porphyry of considerable size is. not present he may be facing much greater risk of finding an ore body than if a prophyry were presents Since, there are many intrusive porphyritic rocks which do not seem to be associated with hydrothermal deposit, it is believed that some distinct value can come from the recognition of intrusive porphyry which might be barren as well as the intrusive prophyry which might be productive This paper deals with that problem.

"The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) was required under the Federal Clean Water Act and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (U.S. EPA) Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Policy to develop a Long Term Control Plan (LTCP) to reduce or eliminate overflows from its permitted CSO outfalls. The LTCP was completed in 2002. Key components of the plan include: 26 miles (42 km) of deep storage and conveyance tunnels providing a total CSO storage volume of 325 million gallons (MG) (1.2 billion liters); over 30 miles (48 km) of consolidation sewers to route CSO control flows to the tunnels; and associated diversion/inflow control structures and drop shafts. Final design and construction of the initial phases of the LTCP are completed or underway. Advanced planning of the final phases began in April 2013. This paper summarizes this advanced planning process and, specifically, how hydraulic performance and tunnel design and construction considerations were balanced to eliminate unnecessary projects and shafts, reduce implementation risks, and reduce program costs by approximately $650 million. BACKGROUND The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (District) serves an area of approximately 350 square miles (SM) (907 km2), including combined (81 SM; [210 km2]) and separate (269 SM [697 km2]) sewer systems that discharge to three wastewater treatment plants in the greater Cleveland area. The service area, shown in Figure 1, is divided into three districts—Easterly, Westerly, and Southerly—each having its own interceptor system and treatment plant, ranging in wet weather treatment capacities from 100 to 735 million gallons per day (MGD) (378.5 million to 2.8 billion L/day). The system includes 124 permitted combined sewer overflow (CSO) outfalls overflowing into the region’s tributary streams, Cuyahoga River, and Lake Erie."

The sedimentary western phosphate deposits of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming tend to be calcareous and generally carry a significant amount of dolomite along with collophanite. In some cases, such as the Smokey Canyon Mine, Afton, Wyoming, the ore will also contain mudstone, and in this case the aluminosilicate minerals (clay, feldspar, etc.) together with some dolomite are floated from the collophanite in column flotation cells with an amine in order to meet product specifications (31 % P205) (Service et al.). In other cases, such as the SF Phosphates Limited Mine, Vernal, Utah, the ore is treated by traditional fatty acid flotation of the collophanite with mechanical flotation cells (Weber, 1986). Preliminary tests have now been conducted to evaluate air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) technology for the flotation of western phosphate ore. For this preliminary study, samples were taken from the hydrosizer overflow stream (18-21 % P205) at the SF Phosphates Limited Plant in Vernal, Utah for scavenger flotation testing with the 2-inch ASH system in laboratories at the University of Utah. Selected design and operating variables are being studied, and the initial results show that satisfactory separations can be achieved by high-capacity ASH flotation at appropriate operating conditions. For example, with single-stage ASH flotation 80% recovery can be obtained with a scavenger concentrate grade of about 26% P2O5. These results are comparable to, or better than, those obtained at SF plant operations with conventional flotation cells and suggest that ASH flotation technology can be used to good advantage in the phosphate industry. Of course, research should be continued to consider other process streams, optimize the separation efficiency, and evaluate larger diameter ASH units.

General mining practices at W. R. Grace's Bonny Lake mine are much the same as those used in open pit phosphate mines in Central Florida, except for the difference in the depth of the overburden which introduces many variations, From 1945 to 1961 the mining at Bonny Lake has been from an area in which the overburden averages from 55 to 60 feet and in several locations exceeded 65 feet. The matrix thickness will average 15 to 18 feet for the areas mined. As you can see from the above depths a total hole depth will average from 70 to 75 feet.

INTRODUCTION This contract is the most northerly portion of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. (TARP) The project begins at Addison Street in Chicago and proceeds northerly approximately ten miles to end at Wilmette Harbor and Lake Michigan. The project which consists of 2 work shafts, 32 drop shafts, 7.322 km (24,020 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel, 8.458 km (27,750 ft.) of 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel and miscellaneous rock bolting and grouting, was bid for a total cost of $63,140,480. The tunnel invert elevation varies from 65.5 m (215 ft.) to 77.4 m (254 ft.) below the ground surface, which places the tunnel in a rock formation of dolomite limestone. At the tunnel invert, the unconfined compressive strength of the limestone varies from 96 MPa (14,000 psi) to 152 MPa (22,000 psi). The 6.7 (22 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 10.9 cu m. (14.2 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel while the 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 20.1 cu m (26.3 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel. The total cubic meters of rock required to be excavated from both tunnels was 818,821 cu m (1,070,978 cu yd.). All of this will be mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM). These tunnels were not to be lined with concrete. The thirty two drop shafts have upper portions that are cylindrical in the overburden and rock sections. "Conventional" coal dryers really do not exist. What we really mean to say is that there are many and varied kinds of coal dryers -- and the "air handling problem" is really the only portion of it which has been approached for solution by conventional methods. It now appears that these conventional methods need supplementing by some new, relatively unconventional apparatus. In order to approach this matter with mutual understanding, here is a quick survey of the coal drying art. Figure #1 shows a McNally Pittsburgh Pulso Dryer, In the McNally Pulso Dryer, the coal is fed-onto the screen by a rotary feeder assuring even distribution of the coal. As the coal travels forward due to the action of the screen, it is subjected to a controlled pulsating flow of hot gases. T ese originate below the deck and are directed up through the moving bed of coal. Fines sifting through the deck are dried in the hopper below the screen as they fall through the hot gases to an evacuation screw. The coal remaining on the screen is dried to the desired degree when it reaches the discharge end. At this point, it is directed down into the evacuation screw to combine with the fines, or it may be discharged as a separate product. As the coal travel down the screen, it is subjected to intermittent upward currents of hot gases. These first distend the bed allowing the gases to come into intimate contact with the coal particles for rapid and efficient heat transfer. Then, as the flow of gas is cut off, the bed settles and the extreme fines sift through the screen preventing their being carried away into the exhaust system.

Two cemented paste backfill (CPB) formulations containing pyritic tailings were leached in deionized water in flooded and alternating air-flooded environments and in a simulated acid rock drainage-type (ARD) solution. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), solid phase chemistry and acid-base accounting measurements documented the weathering characteristics of the CPB samples. Short-term exposures of the portland-CPB samples preferentially dissolved the cement binder to a greater extent than slag-Portland CPB mistures. In all cases, the added neutralizing potential provided to backfill by cement was short-lived and insufficient to neutralize the acid generating potential of the mixture.

Table I identifies the maximum cost of the individual provisions with spoil disposal in Appalachia leading at $3.98 per ton, This was followed by deep mine subsidence control and monitoring at $1.66 per ton. At the request of the U.S. Department of Energy, the Bowser-Morner Testing Laboratories of Dayton, Ohio, evaluated Consol's cost estimates for 14 of the 21 regulatory provisions the company studied. It is interesting to note that Bowser-Morner concluded that Consol's estimates of costs were very conservative and that the actual costs will be substantially higher than what the company reported. In 1978 a joint committee of the National Coal Association and the American Mining Congress made estimates of cost impacts under 11 OSM permanent rules (see Table II). Six rules applied to mid-western strip mining were projected to cost $6.52 to $17.17 per ton. Five rules applied to mid-western strip mines showed costs ranging from $.91 to $6.11 per ton. Three rules applied to deep mines (regardless of region) were seen raising costs from $ .57 to $2.67 per ton. The joint committee reported trouble developing overall figures because member firms used widely different assumptions in calculating their costs. That same statement could no doubt be made when comparing most cost data available today.

Profitable marketing of most minerals is dependent upon the total delivered cost to the user. Transportation costs are often greater than the value of the mineral f.o.b. the mine or processing facility. In some cases, transportation costs are three to five times the mineral cost. For many years, transportation costs were controlled by a complex system involving the transportation companies and supervised by regulatory agencies. This paper will deal with the effects of deregulation on rail costs and outline the major changes in transportation economics.

Blast furnaces of high specific throughput capacities producing 10,000 tpd of pig iron or even more, require burden materials which, because of their chemical, physical and metallurgical properties, guarantee such high performances. Meanwhile, it should be generally accepted that for evaluating the quality of iron ore pellets, it is not sufficient to know the chemical analysis and the physical properties, i.e. grain size distribution, cold compression strength and abrasion of the fired pellets. It is indispensable to determine the metallurgical properties indicated by swelling, reduction-softening under load and reducibility, as well as grain disintegration in the low-temperature range in the beginning of reduction. By introducing new test methods, and in the face of the need to meet more strict requirements, pellet producers are being confronted with steadily increasing tasks and problems which require a deepening of our knowledge of the ways and means of making high-quality iron ore pellets.

Mine land reclamation is a comparatively new science-Although some mining companies point with pride to reclamation efforts of 20 to 30 years ago these were the exception rather than the rule. In the last ten years the skyrocket of environmental awareness has been awesome to behold. Future shock gripped mine operators everywhere as they struggled to cope with rapidly changing and escalating demands. The initial result was that two divergent points of view became dominant. Environmentalists said, "Put it back the way it was," and the miners responded, "Let's grow some weeds and hide it." These views are not surprising as they represent rather obvious alternative responses, albeit at opposite ends of the decision spectrum. The former case has prevailed more often than the latter, as most state and federal legislation -- both proposed and passed -- has required drastic alteration of the post-mining landscape so that evidence of prior mining is largely obliterated. An exception to this has been in porphyry copper country where the infrequent abandonment of mines has given emphasis to the second philosophy -establishing vegetative cover on mine waste materials. Now, it should come as no revelation to most mining people that both of these approaches to mine reclamation suffer from serious drawbacks when applied to open pit copper mines. First, whereas waste dumps and tailings dams can be vegetated with some aesthetic benefit, the massive presence of copper mining operations remains very prominent. It is difficult to conceal an open pit copper mine. Second, returning open pit copper mines lands to their original topography and productivity is simply not a reasonable alternative.

This study examined the-feasibility of clay mineral identification and quantification by reflectance radiometry and subsequently developed a computer algorithm for deconvolution of the component spectra. Clay mineral analysis of 53 rocks and soils from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nevada by X-ray diffraction (XRD) compare favourably with the radiometric determinations. The application of the technique to precious metal exploration was examined at the Horse Canyon epithermal gold deposit, Cortez Mine, Nevada where low levels of illite and kaolinite are present alongside local silicification. Consequent on the success of the laboratory and field work a field portable clay mineral analysis system was designed and constructed.
