It is a core contributor to the maintenance of fair, orderly and transparent markets. The communication of relevant and comprehensible information to the investor plays a vital part in fostering investor confidence, thereby building depth and liquidity in our market. Australian Stock exchange Limited ("ASX") has had and continues to have a rewarding partnership with the mining industry to develop and recognise reporting standards, the JORC Code. This allows ready comparability and investor understanding of the mining investment vehicle. ASX's mining market has been successful because of the high reporting standards in the JORC Code and the high standards of professionalism and the intellectual capital that has been built up among the participants - the mining professionals, brokers, analysts, mining investors, professional advisers and the market operator. The balance of knowledge and understanding among these participants combined with the competition for capital, contributes to the standards for our mining market in a way that the market operator simply cannot replicate by market rules alone.

In addition, dewatering is seldom complete because of aquifer irregularities and an operator's natural reluctance to start a costly study program, provision of wells, and pumping long before mining begins. In some cases, water pumped from the mine is used in treatment. This use is suggested as a way to minimize effluent effects. The true objective of water supply, however, is to provide water of satisfactory quality at the rate needed and at the least cost. Pumping to permit efficient mining isn't likely to coincide strictly with that objective during much of the mine life. The history of mining is replete with efforts, some highly ingenious, to control mine water. Methods that might be used to tackle the challenge Operators of wet mines are faced with both obvious pumping costs and some unquantified water costs. It is possible to reduce both types of costs, generally by reducing inflow to the mine area-and a surprising number of methods have been used to do this. Both the obvious and unquantified costs at a wet mine are now multiplied by: •Increasing costs of power, labor, equipment, and supplies; •Work at greater depth and, in some cases, in wetter ground; •Increasing use of hydraulic fill; and •Increasing zeal in protection of surface and groundwater quality. There are many easily overlooked ways in which mine water may add to hazards and costs (Loofbourow, 1973). As to their importance, consider these examples: •Increased maintenance of equipment, tires, roads, and ditches; •Increased difficulty in supplying proper ventilation; •Increased hazards from ice and use of electric power; • Loss of friable ore minerals and fines stuck on conveyances and in chutes; •Need to use more expensive methods and explosives; and •Decrease productivity of equipment and personnel. Expressed as cost per unit of ore produced, these unquantified costs can be high. Ideally, advanced dewatering should eliminate most of them. Advanced dewatering is a highly effective water control method, but it isn't problem free. Mines in ideal ground for advanced dewatering are most unusual. To be effective, water must be pumped at a comparatively high rate for a period longer than the life of the mine, from below mining depth. Effects on both groundwater and surface water are likely to be drastic. of increasing mine water costs are listed in the accompanying table. Ten groups of possible methods are cited. Most have been demonstrated in mining; two are known from industries other than mining.

INTRODUCTION Mine waste monitoring and management is essential when the industry is being required to accept the environmental liability for all generated, stored and disposed solid and hazardous waste. Environmental regulations mandate the operator to minimize waste production while requiring the operator to cleanup existing contamination. Since these requirements are being enforced, many operators do not have a clear under- standing, whether their existing operation will or could be required to adopt remedial plans to mitigate off-site contamination impacts. The following methods, using conventional and advanced geostatistical methods, provide a tool to make appropriate assessments whether existing or potential contaminant issues are present. BACKGROUND Generated solid wastes from mining operations are currently exempt from Solid Waste Disposal Act (SWDA) Sub- title C (RCRA), statutes and promulgated regulations, however, compliance with SWDA Subtitle D statutes and regulations is required. In order for the mining operator to be exempt from hazardous waste regulations, the operator must demonstrate that generated waste does not have hazardous waste characteristics. In many instances the operator will be able to use statistical tools and their existing data to determine whether their site could be a potential hazardous waste liability. METHODS The following statistical and geostatistical methods can be used to determine whether existing wastes could be a regulatory concern. The following presents a brief discussion of standard statistical methods and discusses, in greater detail, how advanced geostatistical tools can be used to define potential waste issues. The following will discuss how data can be screened, "Data Filtering and Reporting"; how data can be evaluated using "Conventional Statistics"; followed by a detailed discussion o f "Geostatistical and Estimation Techniques" and "Statistical Modeling". Data Filtering and Reporting Data filtering is the simplest, but potentially the most powerful statistical tool because data can be easily sorted to meet regulatory reporting requirements. Filtering includes unions and intersections of data such as date, maximum and minimum values of one or several variables. Using the data base presented in "Mine Waste Data Base Management Procedures", Robinson and Hagar, 1987, an example of a filter group is presented.

Sustainable development requires that exploitation of environmental resources is such that it does not result in permanent damage to the environment. In many instances environmental damage is an external cost of the entity exploiting the resource. Ideally, the entity should be forced to internalize this cost. Various financial assurance schemes have been proposed to ensure that the entities fulfill their financial responsibility to restore the environmental dam-age. Prominent among these schemes are ?environmental bonding requirements?. A main issue with these financial assurance schemes is that many times the amount and duration of environmental damage is uncertain. That is, the cost of restoring the environment in the future may be unknown (or unknowable), and, furthermore, the extent of the damage may not be known for many years into the future. Nevertheless, bonding requirements have to be set in advance and the rules for returning the bond and absolving the entity of responsibility have to be specified ex ante. In practice, a problem of allocation of resources arises. To make sure that all external costs are internalized, in the face of uncertainty, will require a sufficiently (arbitrarily) large bond for a sufficiently (arbitrarily) long period of time. But such a requirement may prove too expensive and may result in not undertaking a project (even if, under certainty, the project may be profitable after internalizing all costs). This will result in a reduction in total welfare. Under present bonding requirements, firms are responsible up to the value of the bond. This results in an asymmetry: if environmental restoration is less than the bond amount, the firm has an incentive to restore and reclaim the bond; if the cost of the environmental restoration is above the value of the bond, the incentive is to forfeit the bond, imposing on the government/ society the excess cost. This also may reduce social welfare, at least on distributional grounds since the firm owners pocket the profits and the taxpayers foot the bill. The presence of uncertainty suggests that a fee based reclamation fund may be welfare enhancing. The thinking can be sketched as follows: All firms undertaking environmentally sensitive projects pay into the proposed fund. The fund examines the risks and sets the premiums at the level of the expected restoration costs (not the maximum!) plus administrative expenses. One advantage of the scheme is that this eliminates the asymmetry. Firms with restoration costs below expected end up subsidizing firms whose restoration costs were underestimated. In other words, the industry ends up internalizing the costs not internalized by the individual firms, instead of the taxpayers.

Introduction Uranium mining has been actively carried on in Canada for over twenty-five years mainly in Ontario at Elliot Lake in Bancroft, and in Northern Saskatchewan at the operations of Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. During this period, approximately one hundred million tons of mill tailings have been created and lie mainly on the surface close to the mining and milling installations. If all of the present reserves of uranium ores in Canada are mined, a further eight hundred million tons of mine tailings could be created in Ontario, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Labrador and British Columbia. The present control of effluents from existing tailings is managed by the operating mines under the regulations of both federal and provincial control agencies. It is the long-term effect of these tailings on the environment that has not been clearly defined or measured. Several years ago, the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, embarked upon a program of research directed at the long-term effects of uranium mine tailings. Much of the research to date has been on tailings in the Elliot Lake, Ontario area where some tailings piles have existed for over twenty years. The program consists of two projects, one to address the problem of existing tailings and the other to examine alternatives in the management of current and future tailings. TAILINGS CHARACTERISTICS Uranium tailings are generally the result of sulphuric acid leaching in which the uranium and alkaline minerals such as carbonates and chlorites are leached out. If the ore contains sulphides, these minerals potentially present an additional hazard of acid generation over time and could increase the mobility of heavy metals and some radionuclides such as thorium-230. Except for the extracted uranium, most of the radionuclides from the ore remain in the tailings pile. Uranium ores in Canada span a wide variety of mineralization and associated gangue composition. Uranium minerals include pitchblende, uraninite, uranothorite, brannerite and the phosphate uranium minerals autunite and saleeite. Gangue minerals vary from acid consuming carbonates, and chlorites to acid producing sulphides and inert silicates. With such a wide variety in ore composition, the characteristics of the resultant tailings in Canada are in many cases site specific and the solutions to the long-term effects of these tailings may also be site specific.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

Crushing and grinding activity in 1989 followed the rapid pace of the mineral industry. Use of existing installations, demand for expanded capacity, and implementation of entirely new operations contributed to a high level of activity. At the 1989 SME-AIME Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV, the crushing and grinding session focused on wear materials in crushers and mills. Another session joined the process control group in its simulation-modeling and control of crushing and grinding circuits. Both sessions addressed the optimization in operating effectiveness. Specific subjects covered grinding media wear of forged and cast grinding balls and rubber lined mill liner wear. Also, the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) Mill Conference in Vancouver in September 1989 provided a valuable update on the progress of SAG operations in recent years. Operationally, gold grinding and roasting circuits were implemented in 1989. Freeport McMoRan Gold started up two operations in Nevada. Two other circuits, both using SAG mills, are scheduled to start in 1990. These will be in Nevada and British Columbia. Elsewhere in gold, additional capacity continues to be brought onstream, both domestically and worldwide. In copper, expansions continue to call on additional crushing and grinding units. The unrest at Bougainville in Papua New Guinea has fueled a continued, strong demand for comminution in the copper sector. Specific equipment installed or started in 1989 included the ac variable frequency drive SAG mills in Australia, Alaska, and Papua New Guinea. Also, the gearless drive SAG mill in Chile provides tremendous flexibility in terms of mill speed. The trend toward moveable in-pit crushers continues -even at established operations.

Traditionally, only the large mining companies have maintained specialist departments in such areas as Rock Mechanics, Ventilation and Safety. To the small companies this has been a luxury that they could ill afford. Any work required by such companies in these areas, more complex than could be handled by the existing staff, was done by consultants. This situation is changing though and there is a need arising for many specialist departments. These changes are partly being brought about by the effects of inflation as the ever increasing costs are causing more and more operators to increase the size of their operations in search of economies of scale. In addition though the plethora of new laws and regulations are creating a need for many more specialists in all areas of mining in order to ensure compliance. The abovementioned factors, added to the existing Pattern of mines endeavoring to improve the working environment for their labor force, both for reasons of practical labor relations and also due to further legislative pressures, have thus created a climate where, in the near future, departments such as Rock Mechanics, Safety, Ventilation, Environmental Engineering and Subsidence Control will be commonplace in mining companies. It will no longer be practical to function without such services. Many mining companies already maintain such departments and this has particularly been true of the big mining groups of South Africa. From the experience gained by many of these large companies with specialist departments, it is clear that the maintenance of a cadre of experienced, competent professionals in such a department has not always been easy. It would seem from the experience gained that one can generalise and state that graduate mining engineers tend not to view specilisation as an optimum direction for their career development. It is of course true that many professionals, especially those with higher than a bachelors degree, do view these areas as valid career options, but even here experience shows that wastage is high. The time therefore seems to be ripe to take a look at this area in some detail to see whether reasons for the problems can be isolated. Working from that some suggestions can be made as to directions in which improvements might be made. If the challenge of the demands of the new regulations are to be met then such improvements must be made.

The studied coal mi1e is an underground coal mine located in the northern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah (Figure 1) . Since operation began in 1981, in situ stress conditions have been encountered which differ from the assumed conditions utilized during early mine design efforts. Geologic structures also varied somewhat from those projected during initial geologic interpretations of the area. The encountered geologic conditions combined with the unusual stress conditions prompted a combined study of in situ stress and stress-related geologic structures. The study was conducted in two phases, with phase 1 consisting of detailed underground mapping and analysis of stress-related geologic structures to determine stress orientations from which they originated; and phase 2, consisting of over- coring two sites within the mine to determine present in situ stress orientations and magnitudes. GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS Three types of geologic structures have been encountered in the mine that act as indicators of stress orientations of the geologic past. Two of these structures, faulting, and igneous dikes, are directly measurable in the mine. A third type of structure, photolineation, was detected through remote sensing methods and shoe god correlation to roof conditions in certain areas of the mine. Faults Two major orientations of faulting have been encountered in the studied coal mine, including a system of N 80 W striking normal faults and a system of N 55 to 70 W striking oblique-slip faults. Only data collected from the oblique-slip faults were used for this study due to the fact that these faults offset the N 80 W faults wherever the two systems intersect, indicating that the N 55 to 70 W system was created by a more recent stress field. Figure 2 shows locations within the mine where data were collected from seven locations along oblique-slip faults. Data collection consisted of measurement of fault plane strike and dip, fault slickenside trend and plunge, and slip direction. The data are tabulated in Table 1. The fault data were then plotted on stereo nets to determine the stress orientations present at the td of faulting (Figure 3). The determined stress orientations are 32~0 included in Table 1. The stereo net plots show average principal stress orientations of: 1) [ ] plunge 1 degree. These data suggest that the N 55 to 70 W oblique-slip faults were produced by a nearly

Introduction Clearly, many problems confront the minerals industry today. Yet, at the same time, there is too much energy spent bemoaning the negative effects of difficult economic circumstances, low metals prices, and adverse government policies. These are factors that cannot be altered by individual mineral company reactions. In fact, as we look to the future, the only thing we can be certain of is that we will continue to be faced with uncertainty. Thus, an area that demands close scrutiny and that can significantly affect a company's performance in the future is the posture it adopts to deal with uncertainty. This paper looks at how strategies are developing to deal with this issue. It also examines some of the implications that implementing such strategies have for the role of the individual explorationist. Elements of strategy Whether mineral company strategies are based on diversifying or retrenching, on emphasizing primary production or downstream integration, there seems to be increasing agreement that in the current environment strategies must have several features. They need to be information-based - developed out of access to timely and complete data and analysis about proposed directions and competitor activity, rather than simply following a current fashion. They need to be flexible - adaptable in light of changes in the marketplace and an unpredictable industry. And they need to be cost-efficient - making the most of limited resources. Whether a company is looking for gold financing opportunities, acquiring polymetallic prospects, or doing grassroots exploration for diamonds, these three elements are increasingly essential. They not only allow the company to pursue its current goals most expeditiously, but also open it to hearing and using feedback in the most constructive way. The company can then improve or change strategy as it proceeds. And it can be best positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. These elements of strategy place great emphasis on the skills of the individual. The need for critical intelligence and the reduced amount of capital available to manage are making it more obvious that exploration is a "people" business. This is in accordance with a general trend in many sectors of industrialized economies, reflecting the widely discussed shift from smokestack to information-based industries. Increasing the odds There is a direct connection between successfully implementing the approaches to strategy discussed above and encouraging and improving the quality of work of the individual explorationist. To illustrate the importance of this, some commonly quoted figures on the odds of discovery success can be used. These figures are arbitrary but illustrative. Assume that one out of 100 exploration prospects actually turns out to be a promising ore body, and that one out of 1000 becomes a mine. Based on our research, chances are the most of those

8.1 INTRODUCTION Several methods currently exist by which gold may be recovered from a pregnant leach liquor. Two of these methods are discussed in this chapter, the Merrill-Crowe (zinc cementation) process and the carbon adsorption process. These two methods represent the most frequently used techniques for gold extraction and are, -in fact, used almost exclusively in U.S. heap leaching operations. Because of the efficiency and ease of use of these two methods, it is extremely likely they will continue to be quite prevalent within the gold mining industry in years to come. The remainder of this chapter includes information on the history of the two processes, descriptions of the actual processes, criteria to consider in selecting a recovery process, and commercial design and construction considerations for both of the gold recovery methods. As with other chapters in this book, some fairly technical information is presented for the benefit of those readers needing a greater level of detail. However, the overall intent of the chapter is to provide an overview of the processes likely to be used in gold extraction, thus giving the reader a firm basis for more technical research into the topic, should this be needed. 8.1.1 History of Zinc Cementation During the late 18901s, zinc cementation was introduced for the precipitation of gold and silver from cyanide solutions. This occurred at about the same time as the introduction of the cyanidation process, the history of which is recapped in Chapter 1. The initial cementation process involved introduction of a gold-bearing cyanide solution onto a bed of zinc shavings. It proved to be quite inefficient because the reaction rate was very slow. The zinc quickly became "passive", inhibiting further gold deposition. Shortly after this first introduction, zinc precipitation was improved by adding a lead salt (usually lead nitrate) to the zinc. This allowed a zinc-lead couple to form on the surface of the shavings, eliminating passivation of zinc surfaces and thereby allowing continued deposition of gold. In no Confederation of Independent States (CIS) country does the mining sector play quite so commanding a role as in the mountainous Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan. Its president, Askar Akayev, says he would like to develop his country into "a Central Asian Switzerland." However, in Switzerland, the gold is largely under the street along Zurich's renowned Bahnhofstrasse. In Kyrgyzstan, though, the gold is still in the mountains. Accordingly, Kyrgyzstan's recent adoption of a comprehensive new mining law has attracted widespread attention. Akayev recently completed a tour of the United States. His visit drew large crowds from the business community at events staged in New York and Washington, DC. The success can be attributed as much to the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan's min¬ing sector as to the personal charms of the nation's president. Led by a half-billion-dollar investment by Canada's uranium giant Cameco, the mining sector is leading Kyrgyzstan's economic revival. And Bishkek is beginning to show some of the same signs of a "boom town" that already mark its Kazak neighbor, Almaty. Mercedes and BMWs already outnumber the Volgas on Bishkek's major traffic arteries. After nearly two years of debates involving government advisors and a final round of deliberation in Parliament, Kyrgyzstan finally adopted its second mining law. This followed quickly in the wake of measures enacted in neighboring Kazakstan and proposed in Russia. Kyrgyzstan's new law replaces the 1992 law "On Mineral Resources." It was one of the first enactments of an independent Kyrgyzstan. The 1992 law made a major contribution to the introduction of free-market economics in the country by ending the state monopoly over mineral exploration and development. It also laid the groundwork for an independent mining industry. According to Kyrgyz government reports, Kyrgyzstan has about 270 commercially viable deposits of almost 40 types of mineral resources. These include oil, gas, coal, precious-, nonferrous-, ferrous-, rare- and basemetals. However, the nation's key draw is gold. Since enactment of the first law, the government has issued more than 100 licenses for geological prospecting for and development of established deposits of gold.

Finnish mining traditions date back 400 years. The country was then one of Europe's major iron producers. Most of the mines in current operation, however, were started during the last 20 to 30 years. The Finnish mining industry must make do with limited resources. Deposits are usually low grade and small in size. Open-pit methods are used where possible. But thin ore bodies and harsh winters can impose severe restrictions. Underground mining is often the only option. Despite these handicaps, Finnish metal miners produce copper, nickel, zinc, vanadium, iron ore, cobalt, and ferrochrome. Ironically, the success of Finnish mining is rooted in a crisis the industry faced several decades ago. Mining costs were rising. High grade mineral deposits were nearly exhausted. It was vital that Finland develop new mining machinery and methods that afforded higher productivity. Cooperation between the Finnish mining industry and its equipment manufacturers was good. Partly as a result, the Finnish mining industry has turned itself into one of the most modern and efficient in the world. The Finns did this while continuing to meet the stringent safety and environmental requirements in force in the Nordic countries. Today, the share of domestic raw materials used by the Finnish metallurgical industry is decreasing. So the country increasingly depends on imports of ores and concentrates. To better provide these imports, Finnish mining companies have expanded their foreign operations. And, while importing raw materials, the mining industry has been exporting its technological and equipment know-how and expertise. Mining methods Conventional mining methods and machinery are used in surface mines. Drilling is the exception. It is done with Tamrock hydraulic track drills and 100 to 150 mm-diam (4 to 6-in.-diam) drill holes. Pumpable slurry explosives are used in larger open pits. Underground, sublevel stoping with open stopes is the most common mining method. It accounts for about 80% of all underground stoping. The main benefits of this method are low production costs, high mechanization, and easy control. The best productivity figures exceed 10 t (11 st) per man-hour, including all mining personnel. The development of cable bolting has made it possible to use sublevel open stoping even in relatively weak rock. Cut-and-fill methods, such as concrete-pillar stoping, inclined-wall stoping, and traditional cut-and-fill have also been used, combined with sublevel caving and room-and-pillar methods, according to local demands. Various fill materials and stabilization components have been investigated and tested for cut-and-fill methods. Sublevel open stopes are often later filled, to stabilize the surface or to allow pillar recovery.

The term phosphate beneficiation often conjures up visions of processing technologies that physically separate the phosphate rock from some impurity and do not result in a change in the chemical nature of the phosphate rock. However, when we consider hydrometallurgical processing as a phos¬phate beneficiation technique we have to include all chemical treatments that convert phosphate rock into a more useful product. With most of the phosphate rock mined being used for fertilizer pro¬duction, the best known and most widely employed hydrometallurgical process is wet process phospho¬ric acid manufacture. In general, all phosphate rocks are so insoluble that there is no physical treat¬ment that will allow the phosphate content to be used by vegetation in a timely manner. However, after chemical treatment, 100% of the phosphate is readily available for vegetation nutrition. If there is a chemical beneficiation process that could be considered the standard method of treat¬ing phosphate rock it would have to be the wet pro¬cess for phosphoric acid production. In this process finely ground phosphate is reacted with sulfuric acid to give phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. The phosphogypsum crystals are removed from the phosphoric acid solution and discarded; the phos¬phoric acid is further processed to give the finished fertilizer product. The primary reason that this pro¬cess was adopted so widely is because the phosphogypsum solid that is formed can be easily separated from the phosphoric acid, thereby removing the calcium portion of the phosphate rock and the sul¬fate portion of the sulfuric acid. Other acids have been used to treat phosphate rock but nitric acid is the only other acid used commercially. Nitric acid gives a mixture of phos¬phoric acid and nitrates that can be further pro¬cessed into N-P fertilizers, but the range of N/P grades that can be produced is limited. Hydrochlo¬ric acid has been used to react with phosphate rock, and it can be used to generate a pure phos¬phoric acid but only after solvent extraction to separate the calcium chloride from the phosphoric acid. And then there is the problem of what to do with the calcium chloride. The acid that has received the most attention as a substitute for sulfuric acid is phosphoric acid. In this process, the phosphoric acid reacts with the phosphate rock to give a mono-calcium phosphate solution. This process does not dissolve all the impurities in the phosphate rock, and these solids can be removed from the solution before sulfuric acid is added to convert the soluble calcium to insoluble phosphogypsum. Despite all the claimed advantages, this process has not found favor. A suc¬cessful application of this process to treat some of the lower grade phosphate rocks being used today would seem to have some distinct advantages. In determining the layout or combination of unit operations to be utilized in a modem preparation plant, several factors must be taken into account. Among these are the washability data, size consist data, the particular market or markets for the coal, the mining method used, the degree to which the coal must be prepared, expected fluctuations in raw coal and markets, and the overall economics of the process. In addition, there are the health and safety aspects of coal utilization and preparation. Chapter 1 of this book discusses the characteristics of coal and coal markets, while Chapter 2 deals with the design of preparation plants. Once the unit operations for a particular plant have been decided upon, these arrangement may be depicted by using a flowsheet. A coal preparation plant flowsheet is a two-dimensional graphical representation of the sequence of operations, the arrangement of machinery, and the flow of materials for a particular coal cleaning operation. The flowsheet is usually qualitative in nature, becoming more quantitative as material balances, water balances, numbers and sizes of various pieces of equipment, etc. are added. The usual convention in preparing a flowsheet is to show the feed flowing from left to right, starting at the top left and working down as in an all-gravity process. Various symbols are used for each unit operation as depicted on a flowsheet, and Fig. 14-37 is a compilation of the commonly accepted international standard symbols for each unit operation. Fig. 14-38 through Fig. 14-40 are flowsheets of various coal cleaning processes as published in the January 1976 issue of Coal Age. Each process has its own unique features which, among others, depend upon the coal being cleaned, the coal market, and the mining operation. Fig. 14-38, for example, is a flow diagram for a jig plant preparing steam coal from two strip mines located a few miles apart. In addition to the jig washer, cyclones are used to treat the finer size coal. Fig. 14-39 is a flowsheet of a heavy media plant using a heavy media washer for + %-in. (+6.3-mm) coal, froth flotation for -28 Tyler mesh (-0.6 mm) material, and dewatering phase units (dwp) for Y, in. x 28 Tyler mesh (6.3 x 0.6-mm) cleaning of steam coal. In addition, thermal drying, centrifuge drying, and the use of vacuum disk filters and thickeners for dewatering are depicted. Fig. 14-40 is a flowsheet of a plant producing metallurgical coal. In addition to the heavy media and froth flotation circuits, a tabling circuit is also employed. These flowsheets are intended to give the reader an example of how the various unit operations for coal cleaning may be linked together. Figs. 14-41 and 14-42 illustrate the conversion of block diagrams into an IS0 prescribed set of symbols.

Introduction Most primary molybdenite producers use a selective flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and nonsulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step. The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother), and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide, and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born et al. (1976) and Malhotra et al. (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50% of the total molybdenite flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors that would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate nonoil-based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil. A series of potential nonoil-based collector classes were identified and evaluated in the laboratory against the current collector system. The metallurgical performance of these collector classes was related to their chemical structures. The results of this study are discussed. Collector classes A survey of sulfide mineral collectors was performed with the objective of identifying and selecting potential collectors for molybdenite flotation. The available reagents were categorized into 10 general classes. Table 1 summarizes these collector classes, their chemical formulas, the manufacturers, and selected commercial collectors in each class that were evaluated in the present study. Experimental procedure A Climax ore sample, assaying 0.3% MoS2, 2.2% FeS2, 0.007% Cu, 0.003% Pb, and 0.03 oz per ton Ag, was used for this study. Standard laboratory rougher flotation test procedure involved grinding a 2-kg ore charge in a rod mill at 60% solids. Reagents were added to the rod mill including a collector, syntex (0.005 kg/t), pine oil (0.03 kg/t), lime (to adjust pH to 8), and sodium silicate (0.15 kg/t). The ground pulp was transferred to a 1000-g cell, and flotation was performed at 35% solids and 1800 rpm using a Denver D-1 flotation machine. Concentrate was collected for a flotation time of six minutes. The general approach used in the present study was to substitute the nonoil-based collectors at two to three different dosage levels (0.01 to 0.15 kg/t) for vapor oil in the bench-scale, open-circuit rougher flotation tests

Strictly defined, a stull is an inclined or horizontal timber support; a vertically placed timber is defined as a prop. Common usage allows the catchall term "stull" to refer to all such uniaxial mine support, regardless of orientation. Typically a stull is a round wooden column that is wedged in place to provide short-term auxiliary support between sill and back, or between hanging wall and footwall. Stulls may be used exclusively or in con- junction with other support systems such as roof bolts, shotcrete, or cribbing. Stulls are used both as local temporary support in stoping operations and for uniform systematic support installations. Where stoping areas are to be abandoned soon after excavation, stulls may be used to provide temporary support during mining operations. Where controlled caving and subsidence is required, stull supports are designed to fail in a systematic, predictable manner. Wood type is selected on the basis of availability, price, and load carrying characteristics. Coniferous woods are typically used, especially to carry heavy ground loads. Brittle woods are generally avoided because of their tendency to fail suddenly. Gradual yielding failure is preferable to sudden, unexpected failure of the support. Some usage of wood from deciduous trees such as cottonwood and other poplars has been reported in Grants, NM. These stulls reportedly mushroomed as the ground load increased but continued to maintain their structural integrity. Stulls fabricated from structural steel are used in special applications. Adjustable lengths are commercially available in mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic designs. The high cost of mechanical stulls limits their use to mining systems where recovery and reuse is possible. End blocking, also called headboards or footboards, uses wood blocks that are placed between the stull end and the ground they are supporting. The blocks are typically 50.8 to 101.6 mm (2 to 4 in.) thick, 203.2 to 304.8 mm (8 to 12 in.) wide, and 381 to 609.6 mm (15 to 24 in.) long. End blocking serves to distribute the support over wider back area. Compression of the end blocking gives visual indication of wall movement prior to failure of the stull. A common application of the stull is in flat-bedded uranium mining during pillar extraction. Many western US uranium mines use a pillar pattern development to delineate the irregular ore pods. After development of an appropriate sized pillar, the ore pillars are then sequentially mined out, leaving the undercut hanging wall or back to cave. Where thickness of the ore is less than 4.3 m (14 ft), stulls are generally used to provide ground control as the pillar is removed in slices. Experience dictates the density of stull placement. In general, the number and size of stulls should be sufficient to resist ground closure and to provide support for drilling and loading operations adjacent to the pillar. Stulls next to the mining face are often lagged 0.9 to 1.2 m (3 or 4 ft) up from the floor (or sill) to confine the blasted ore to a passage next to the pillar. Mucking is simplified by this confinement. Experience dictates whether back control along a mining face requires removal of stulls to allow con- trolled subsidence of the back or hanging wall. Without caving or closure, abutment pressure can create poor ground conditions near the pillar.

INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.

INTRODUCTION The impact of modern mining and ore processing on the environment is readily minimised. Our improving knowledge of how pollutants are released to and move through the environment has been accompanied by better expertise in controlling these emissions. For example, when the new mines and smelters were developed in the Viburnum Trend of Missouri a sulfur dioxide pollution problem was quickly recognized and soon controlled. (Wixson 1974) But older operations were not efficiently organized and, despite their smaller scale, they often caused major pollution problems. The British mining fields are among the world's oldest and during the heyday of their operation (approximately 1750-1900) they were worked with- out regard to their environmental impact. The Rivers Pollution Commissioners in the mid-nineteenth century were led to remark that ore dressing was carried on in a slovenly and wasteful manner and the complaints by farmers, that river borne mine wastes were poisoning both their crops and stock, were justified. (Frankland and Mortan, 1984). The Comissioners report led to the 1876 River Pollution Act of Parliament, the first modern environment protection legislation. The development of mining since the last century is characterized by improved regulation of the pollution potential of ore dressing, smelting and refining. The collective memory is unfortunately long and pessimistic. A serious problem arises when old mines are reopened especially if the mine has not been worked for several years since local action groups may soon blame the new owners for causing problems which, in reality, are longstanding and were caused by the use of earlier state of the art technology. It is therefore essential that during the early development stages prior to reopening that comprehensive studies be carried out to identify and quantify local contamination problems. These baseline studies should include surveys on the nature and composition of old tailings disposal areas and other wastes on the mine properties. The composition of air and water should be monitored. Soils are long term sinks for all heavy metals and particular attention should be paid to soils within any city areas near the mine since there are sources of heavy metals in urban areas which are not connected with mining and ore processing. This paper describes some of the results of such a study around a prospective cobalt mine in Southeastern Missouri. It is restricted to the soil survey of forest and agricultural land which took place in and around Fredericktown, Missouri. The city is located at approximately 37° 30' North and 90° 20' West and lies 143 kilometers south of St. Louis. There are several metal mines near Fredericktown, including Mine La Motte, which is the oldest and was first opened in 1720. [Figure 1] is a location map of the area. The survey described here was in connection to the reopening of the Madison Cobalt Mine which was first worked in 1947.

Introduction Minerals exploration is one step in the mining industry's task of providing raw materials to basic industries. The industry's provision of raw materials involves identifying and evaluating resources, converting them to reserves, and intelligent, economic exploitation of these reserves. The mineral process focuses on identification and evaluation. Reserves are ore bodies and ore bodies are, by definition, wasting assets. Therefore, if an adequate provision of raw materials to basic industry is to continue, these wasting assets (ore bodies) must be replaced with new or different reserves as current reserves are depleted. Minerals exploration is a geologic problem and is fundamentally deductive, flowing from the general to the specific. Past exploration methods and philosophy have amply supplied the resources to meet the demands of an industrial society. During the past decade, however, the framework where mineral resources were identified, defined, and evaluated has changed. Mineral explorationists no longer can rely solely on the successful past methods to provide the necessary resources for our complex society. Productive explorationists must effectively and efficiently use tools and procedures that will maximize exploration efforts. Past tools need not be abandoned, but should be critically reviewed and revised in light of current scientific knowledge and technical advances. Future explorationists will view their craft not as a single discipline, but as a thoughtful integration of geophysics, geochemistry, and geostatistics for solving interrelated problems. This integration of the geosciences will lead to successful mineral exploration. Not only will the productive explorationist generate new information, he will master the use of existing data for identifying and evaluating a mineral resource. The mineral exploration process consists of incentives, ideas, finance, area, staff, time, and luck. The exploration process that stems from the interaction of these elements has three stages, each bound by a major decision point. They are selection, reconnaissance, and definition. Subsequent evaluation and exploitation phases are considered more the function of mining engineers than the exploration geologist. Mineral exploration endeavors that have been productive have three attributes fundamental to success: commitment, competence, and persistence. Commitment Commitment is believing that exploring for mineral resources is worth performing. While the mining industry is the focus of this commitment, government and society must also be committed to the concept of mineral reserve identification through exploration activity. Government demonstrates its commitment by providing access to land for exploration and, if it is successful, exploitation can take place. Realistic legislation relating to taxation, land use, reclamation, and environmental constraints is indicative of government commitment to intelligent resource use. The public must come to terms with mineral resource evaluation and extraction. Without some form of commitment from the public, availability of mineral resources vital to basic industry will be largely in the control of a foreign and potentially unstable mining industry. Commitment to a mineral resource identification-evaluation-extraction system must be shared equally by government, society, and the minerals industry. The scope and direction of this commitment varies, with the industry's commitment to explore for mineral resources being the most apparent. Industry commitment is the belief at all levels of exploration (from senior corporate executives to individual field and support staff) that exploration is worth performing, that exploration goals can be met, and that their particular organization is the best and the only group that can successfully accomplish the project.
