In 1981 a Zn-Ag-Pb deposit was discovered in the vicinity of Molai, Greece. Subsequently, it was determined to be of the Kuroko type. The geology of various areas in the southeast Peloponnesean Peninsula is similar to that of the Molai deposit. Since favorable geologic criteria are present, absent, or unknown in varying degrees in all areas, it was deemed necessary to classify and rank the prospective areas according to the level of information available. For each level of information, an ore discovery model based on pragmatic exploration criteria was developed, enabling the favorability of occurrence to be calculated for each area. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate the probabilities, the input data consisting of quantitative and qualitative estimates of the geologic criteria for each area. Three levels of information were modeled : Level A consisted of 9 criteria, level B of 12 criteria, and level C of 20 criteria. The three levels of information were tested on the Molai area. The results exceeded expectations, showing the gen¬eral trends which control mineralization at the lowest level of information. With an increase in the level of information, geological trends become more evident and a differentiation can be made between areas containing Cu mineralization, exhibiting a low probability, and areas likely to contain Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization. The models were then applied to the neighboring areas - only level A and B were available.

The southern Florida phosphate deposits that will be mined in the future contain significant amounts of dolomite. Because high MgO levels are undesirable in phosphoric acid production, several flotation schemes for the removal of the dolomite have been attempted. Alternatively, selective flocculation has been suggested as a potential process. A high MgO rock was simulated with a 30:10:60 mixture of apatite, dolomite and silica, respectively. Single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-silica and dolomite- silica systems using Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) flocculants, respectively. However, no single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-dolomite system using PEO. Heteroflocculation, suspected to be the major reason for the loss of selectivity, was minimized by the addition of a site blocking agent (SBA), consisting of a lower- molecular-weight fraction of PEO. Process parameters such as size reduction schemes, flocculant/SBA dosage and pH were investigated to achieve the desired separation. The selectivity obtained in binary mixed-mineral tests was also achieved in the ternary mixed-mineral system, namely, the apatite-dolomite-silica system. In this report, surface chemical characterization of the samples and their flocculation behavior are discussed.

As mine venti1ation systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to supply fresh air to the working face. A high percentage of the fresh air entering a mine never reaches the working face because it short circuits through stoppings and doors, exiting the mine without being utilized. When ventilation limits are reached, the only option presently available to most U.S. mines is to sink a new shaft - an extremely expensive undertaking that many companies cannot afford. Reusing or recirculating a percentage of ventilating airflow may make it possible for some mines to remain operational while maintaining a safe environment for workers. Such a study was performed at a trona mine in Granger. Wyoming. A vane axial fan was used to recirculate approximately 9.4 m /s (20,000 cfm), 25% of the total ventilating airflow, back to the working face area of a three-entry continuous miner section. This study involved two evaluations: the first when the face was 305m (1,000 ft) from the recirculation fan, the second when the face was 610m (2,000 ft) from the fan. The evaluation consisted of monitoring the mine atmosphere for respirable dust, methane (CH4). carbon monoxide (CO), and nitric oxide (NO), at various locations in the intake and return entries. Several shifts were monitored, with and without the recirculation system in operation. With the recirculation system in operation. there was an increase in measured respirable dust concentrations in the intake along with a slight increase in the mine temperature (1.67°C). There were also some minor changes in CO and NO levels in the intake entry, but this seemed to depend on the proximity of the instruments to the turn-around point for the diesel haulage vehicles, than to whether the recirculation system was or was not in use.

One of the major current efforts by the Florida phosphate industry to reduce deep aquifer water consumption is to use 100% recycle water for flotation. This measure alone could save billions of gallons of deep well water annually. However, this also results in higher suspended solids (slimes) in flotation water, causing poor process performance particularly for amine flotation. Polymers could play a major role in allowing the industry to use high-turbidity recycle water for amine flotation without compromising its impact on the Florida economy. The enhancement of rougher flotation by polymers may also have potential. Most importantly, dramatic efficiency improvement may be realized by floating silica first. Adding polymer to flotation feed and/or water is perhaps the most economically viable way of reversing the Crago "double float" process, in order to reduce operating costs and increase phosphate recovery. This paper presents both laboratory and pilot flotation data showing the effect of different polymers on collector dosage and flotation recovery. There appeared to be an optimal range of polymer concentration beyond which the benefits do not offset the drop in phosphate recovery. The effect of poly mer is slime-level dependent. Pilot testing data show that the "Reverse Crago" process (floating silica first followed by phosphate flotation) can outperform the Crago process.

Determination of the state of an underground fire plays an important role in fire fighting, rescue and reopening operations. This is normally achieved by the analysis and interpretation of fire gases taken from the fire zone. However, drawing conclusions from gas analysis is not an easy task and needs specialist skills, expertise and experience that are usually beyond the knowledge of the officials in a mine. The complexities of a mine fire and the uncertainties of available information often make effective fire fighting decisions difficult if not impossible. This paper describes a knowledge based expert system that can aid in the diagnosis of sealed coal mine fires. Using a commercially available shell, the expert system has been designed to accommodate a series of diagnostic rules replicating the reasoning logic that would be used by human experts. The system allows the diagnosis of explosibility of the fire zone and trends of various fire ratios to be easily visualised for decision making. By continuously analysing the incoming information, the system is able to provide a rapid assessment of the situation of a sealed mine fire prevailing under specific mining and geological conditions. In addition, short term trends in fire behaviour can be predicted and possible fire control actions recommended. An example is given and shows how this system can be used as an analytical tool in various ways to assist the combating of coal mine fires. Further development of the system is discussed.

The use of electrokinetic or zeta-potential phenomena in studies of the properties of mineral sulphides has increased greatly over recent years. This review aims to examine and discuss the body of literature on the subject of electrokinetic properties of sulphides in a comprehensive and critical manner. Although the review covers the period from 1925 to 1975, it is only in the past ten years that researchers have been fully aware of the implications and problems of chemical reactions, notably oxidation and precipitation reactions, on the surface properties of sulphide minerals. These papers are discussed in more detail than the earlier publications. A table containing a list of determinations of iso-electric- points and points-of-zero-charge of mineral sulphides, and the methods employed in obtaining these results, is presented.

Because jackleg rock drills are a potential source of hand vibration exposure, they can effectively produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This will affect operator efficiency and mine productivity. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles using new materials to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. In previous work developed by the authors (1991), a detailed study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicated that, for an elastomer-based handle design, the overall acceleration level experienced by the hand can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It was also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz. This paper presents an investigation of the long-term effectiveness of an elastomer-cushioned handle under different conditions underground. In this study, sponsored by the Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada (MIROC), a number of cushioned handles were quantitatively and qualitatively tested in five operating mines. The vibration testing program has indicated that the cushioned handle can reduce overall vibration levels by as much as a factor of three. The qualitative assessment program of the cushioned handles by the drill operators has indicated some degree of preference for the cushioned handles over the steel handles, if certain design modifications are performed. This research program indicated that cushioned handles have the potential to become the dominant method with regard to vibration reduction and operator performance.

Introduction The minerals exploration business, like many businesses, is faced with the problem of valuing future, risky cashflows. These cashflows are derived from those mineral deposits which have been successfully commercialized. Many deposits, however, do not have the quantities or grade of ore to be considered economic at the projected metal prices using the traditional tools of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and discounted cashflow analyses. If one calculates the future revenues, costs and cashflows of one these marginal properties, and discounted it at the appropriate risk-adjusted discount rate, it may have a negative present value. Yet such a property may still have real, positive value in the marketplace. Why would a firm pay money for a property with an (apparent) minus present value? Mining properties such as these are bought and sold in arms- length transactions on a regular basis. Why is this so? Part of the reason relates to the nature of ore reserve information. To generate cashflows, the analyst must t assume that the reserve information is known with certainty when, in fact, reserves are not known with certainty. Mineral reserves are a function of commodity price, extraction costs and the level of (usually drilling) information about the reserves. Powerful, yet inexpensive, personal computers running Windows-95 operating systems provide powerful mine-wide monitoring capabilities when properly engineered. Long awaited conductivity over LAN, phone and Internet links provide new dimensions for sharing information throughout an operator's organization, in- deed around the world. On-line data analysis, archival data storage and historical trend viewing generate shared inputs to production, safety and maintenance personnel. Five years in development, Rel-Tek's new EZ-Trol/W-DX system was engineered around the pilfalls of a Windows environment. It now offers higher speeds, 3D animated graphics and long distance telemetry - all with better reliability than ever before possible. The ubiquitous DDS utility inherent in most Windows was discarded in favor of a lightning fast RAM format. Several ponderous interpretive programs were redesigned into a single compiled entity, thus avoiding the overhead from message conversion, handshaking and transfer. To make the system user friendly, a 'Wizard" utility helps operators set up and reconfigure their systems on site. In-mine data acquisition telemetry was also re- vamped, incorporating a unique noise avoidance scheme, dubbed the "DX" bus - enabling longer distances and higher reliability. 12- bit analog conversion provides the enhanced resolution needed for field scaling auto-cal sensors. By mid '96, eight EZ-TROLMI- DX systems were up and running, several for more than a year. Factory updating and assistance are possible over a phone or Internet link. Our factory testing of components routinely includes actual operation at 2400 BAUD over 14 miles of twisted pair wires.

Stratabound uranium deposits consist generally of two comingled geologic and statistical populations. Barren zones, usually having radiometric assays too low for recording on digitized logs, comprise a large portion of a mineralized stratum. In between are mineralized zones; where the grades are distributed essentially lognormally. Estimation of open-pit ore reserves requires the prediction of the tonnages of selective mining units (the smallest mined volume which may be segregated as ore or waste) and their grades within panels of convenient size for open pit planning and economic analysis. The proportionate tonnage of mineralized selective mining units within each panel can be predicted by kriging an an indicator function assigned to each composite (1 if mineralized, 0 if barren). Next, using logarithms of mineralized assays, the conditional lognormal distribution of grades of mineralized selective mining units can be found. Using this distribution and the krigedestimate of the probability a selective mining unit is mineralized, the grade and tonnage of selective- mining units above any cutoff can be predicted. A case study illustrating this two- step procedure is presented for the Imouraren uranium deposit located in the Republic of Niger. Using cross validation, the estimation procedures were checked and were shown to be adequately accurate for mine planning purposes.

Computer techniques for open-pit limit analysis were introduced into Kennecott Copper Corp. (KCC) during the early 1960's. The first computerized approach used block matrix mineral and economic models, and a removal increment mining simulator. A detailed description of the approach was published in the May issue of Mining Engineering (Carlson, et al., 1966) and also in Chapter 30.3 of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (Pana and Davey, 1973). Since then, many refinements have been made to improve the system and the resulting pit limit design. The fundamentals, however, generally remain unchanged. Computerized open-pit limit analysis is presently used by Kennecott's open-pit copper properties and by the Quebec Iron and Titanium Corp. The system and the fundamental evaluation techniques it represents are cornerstones of all open-pit mine planning activities within KCC. This case study describes a typical example of open-pit limit analysis within KCC. The case involves a copper sulfide porphyry deposit with additional minor amounts of molybdenum, gold, and silver. The ore-grade mineralization within the pit design will be mill feed for a sulfide ore concentrator, and subore grade mineralization will be classed as waste and placed on dumps. The contributions to production and profits from dump leaching are insignificant, having minimal effect on the pit economics and design, because the material responds poorly to leaching solutions.

Maintaining intake escapeways clear of contaminants from mine fires has been an issue for many years. Removing fire sources from these entries reduces the risk of contamination greatly. In recent years, concerns have been raised related to contamination of the intake escapeways by leakage when fires occur in adjacent airways. This paper discusses measured leakage rates for multiple stoppings at various pressure drops across stopping lines in a number of actual coal mines. Also addressed are methods for reducing the contamination risks for the intake escapeways, considering the ventilation system employed. The Effects of Air Leakage The effects of air leakage through ventilation controls has been well documented. While normal leakage is expected through stoppings, overcasts and other structures, abnormally high leakage results in an inefficient ventilation system and can increase operational costs for a mine. In addition, excessive leakage results in less control over mine ventilation airsplits. This may compromise the isolation of mine escapeways, and allow adjacent entries to be rapidly contaminated by products of combustion in the event of a mine fire. A study was conducted at ten mines in which air pressure and quantity measurements were taken near the active sections. The method used to construct the ventilation controls to separate airways was also noted. Stopping Construction Table 1 shows the type of stopping construction commonly used in the 10 mines included in this study. Main entry stoppings were normally built with mortared joints (wet stacked) with sealant applied to the high pressure side of the stopping. In most cases the entire face of the stoppings were sealed. In one case only the joints between blocks were sealed but the perimeters were sealed in all cases. Some mines also sealed the low pressure side of the stopping. Solid blocks were normally used for main entry construction and hollow blocks were sometimes used for longwall panel development. [ ]

The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. he power generation industry may be required to reduce carbon dioxide (C02) emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2 and would be a likely target for CO2 reductions. Compliance with the Kyoto Protocol will require a 33% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level, even with moderate load growth. This article describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs. It assesses how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered. The Global Climate Change Treaty signed at the Rio de Janiero Earth Summit in June 1992 set the long-term goal of stabilizing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The December 1997 Kyoto Protocol established short-term mandatory targets for the United States and 37 other developed countries. The United States' target is a 7% decrease by 2012 from the 1990 "greenhouse gas" level. Developing countries are exempted from reductions, according to the Kyoto Protocol, despite projections that indicate a significant increase in their emission levels. The Kyoto Protocol must be ratified by the US Senate. US power industry carbon emissions were 490 Mt (540 million st) in 1990 and are projected to be 680 Mt (749 million st) in 2012, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2. Assuming that the power industry is only required to reduce emissions by a proportional share, a 33% emission reduction, or 225 Mt (248 million st) of carbon, would be required to comply with

Mining companies are increasingly approaching the social aspect of sustainable development within the rural communities that neighbour their projects and operations. Rural community engagement requires significant effort and resources, and it can be extremely challenging for mining companies to earn and sustain social capital. The focus on rural, proximal community engagement is not to be understated and has led to significant benefits in many communities. However, opposition to mining projects is often exhibited in urban environments, where there may be potential for mining companies to gain social capital with relative ease. Cities tend to have existing frameworks for community engagement and public activation, such as annual parades and festivals, that make it easy for a mining company to provide financial support or value-in-kind. Local organizations and community groups can achieve the same amount of engagement in an urban environment with significantly less effort required from the mining company. By applying simple marketing principles to community engagement strategies, corporations can increase awareness for their business and encourage city residents to think critically about the origin of resources. Unlike many corporations, mining companies are not marketing or selling products to individual consumers. From this arises the opportunity for a company to use marketing to promote other positive initiatives and, as such, connect their brand with positive messaging thus earning social capital. This may lead to a wide variety of secondary impacts including benefits to recruitment efforts, increased political support, and positive media coverage. This paper explores these matters with special reference to Vancouver, BC, Canada and the mining companies Teck and Goldcorp.

It is often alleged by mine ventilation engineers that no reliable method exists to forecast the levels of radiation to be encountered in future uranium mines. It results that the design of uranium mine ventilation systems is based on factors other than radiological hazards, such as radon and radon daughter concentrations, for which permissible limits are set. Ventilation has been used to date as the main control mechanism for radon and radon daughters. Although it has become increasingly difficult to provide enough ventilating air to reduce the radon gas and its daughter products to safe levels in some mining arrangements, it is not the object of this paper to discuss alternatives to ventilation. This paper will describe a methodology followed by the authors over the years to estimate the levels of radiation to be encountered in underground and open pit uranium mines. Ventilating air is used to maintain working level concentrations within safe limits. The sources of radon and radon daughters and the quantities of each which will be produced, will be of great value in planning and designing a ventilation system to control them. This information can afterwards be integrated into the overall mine design. The methodology to be outlined can also be used to estimate, given a mine design format, the radiation levels to be encountered. If levels are not acceptable, modifications in the mine design can be made at an early stage. The emphasis is placed on an integrated effort where the ventilation engineers and the mine design engineers work in close collaboration from the very start of the mining project. Estimation of radon and radon daughter levels can be initiated as soon as core samples are obtained from the exploration programmes.

Crude oil, as a central commercial commodity, is tied to major economic activities in all nations. Also its price fluctuation plays a significant role in global political and economic situation, as a change in the price invariably affects the cost of other goods and services. Therefore reliable forecasts of the price of oil are interest for a wide range of applications. Several approaches have been proposed over the past few years. These may divide into three categories; artificial intelligent, statistical techniques and hybrid methods. The neuro-fuzzy is one of the sub divisions of hybrid method, containing neural network and fuzzy techniques. In this paper a novel forecasting model based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference (ANFIS) is proposed to predict monthly crude oil price. To be able to train and test the model, the statistical data from 1990 to 2010, was obtained from West Texas Intermediate oil prices. The results are compared with a multi criteria regression analysis, it is demonstrated that the neuro-fuzzy lead an accurate and more promising forecast.

A career in the coal mining industry today offers students one of the most interesting and challenging opportunities available in the industrialized world. As reserves of other fossil fuels dwindle in face of the world's demand for energy, it has become apparent that coal, once the king of energy sources, must be relied upon again as the major fuel for powering industrial growth in developed and developing nations. Centuries of coal supplies lie beneath the earth's surface, assuring the world of a steady, plentiful supply of energy until science and technology can produce a way to harness and efficiently use renewable sources, such as solar. The need to increase our use of coal during the last two decades of the 20th century is reason enough to believe that the future growth of the coal industry is assured. A major impediment to that growth might be backward national public policies that could restrict the full utilization of our coal reserves. These policies could result from overregulation and a failure of the public to recognize that coal use, with proper techno- logical safeguards, is compatible with our society's environmental-quality objectives. Communication of this problem and its solution is a major undertaking of the coal industry in the 1980s. At the end of the 1970s, the American coal industry was producing approximately 635 Mt/a (700 million stpy) of coal. To meet the nation's projected energy needs by 1985, the annual tonnage must be doubled. A similar scenario is predicted for the rest of the world. Such growth in the modern international business world will require huge additional amounts of capital, equipment, and people who know how to wisely raise and apply the capital ; use the equipment productively; and deal with the many community, public, and governmental problems such expansion will create. Whether a student's interest is in actual mining operations, business administration, engineering, finance, law, industrial relations, marketing and sales, or public affairs, a career opportunity is available in the industry.

Introduction There continues to be a large economic opportunity associated with improving process performance through advanced process control systems within the minerals industry. The basis for this opportunity lies in the inherently low efficiencies of many of the unit operations found in mineral processing plants as well as the continual variation that is present in the ores being processed. The ageless target of such control systems is improved recoveries and concentrate grades, higher processing rates and lower unit costs. Many plants are enjoying the benefits of modem, well functioning process control systems but few if any have achieved plant-wide optimization in an economical sense. As new process modeling and control technologies, such as neural networks, continue to evolve and develop, the potential for plant- wide optimization is becoming a closer reality. Neural network technology appears to have a significant potential in the general field of process control and control of mineral processing operations. Neural networks are an emerging technology that have been evolving out of the study of biological systems since the early 1940's. The first software simulation of neural computing networks was reported in 1956 by Nathanial Rochester of IBM Research during the first conference on artificial intelligence which was sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Neural Networks Neural networks can be considered to be a class of computer program that perform their problem solving functions based on a rudimentary model of the human brain and how it solves problems. Traditional computer programs and even computers themselves solve problems or process data sequentially and in a deterministic manner. The human brain, on the other hand, processes data and solves problems in a massively parallel fashion. We think of computers normally in terms of having a single processing unit, sometimes a co-processor to assist in certain activities such as mathematical functions or communications, bytes of memory, processing speed and program/data storage size.

Wastes related to abandoned mine sites can constitute important potential pollution sources, depending on their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics and volume. Mine waste disposal sites contain a diverse variety of wastes including overburden material and waste rocks, the ore which cannot be economically removed and wastes from the smelting processes when they are accomplished at the mine site. These materials are usually heterogeneous in size, mineralogy and metal concentrations. Asturias, in northern Spain, has an extensive mining history and, in consequence, there are abundant unreclaimed and derelict mine sites with abandoned mines and spoil heaps of different age, morphology, content and dimensions. In these spoil heaps, waste materials are subjected to the intense action of a humid environment, so the instability of sulphides and sulpharsenides results in the production of acid and metal-rich leachates, which are incorporated to surface water or infiltrated through the land reaching groundwater bodies. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the stored materials are key data to evaluate if they represent an environmental risk. Mineralogy and geochemistry of wastes and the particular specific environmental conditions of each site affect the rate of weathering and therefore the metal release. The characterisation of mine wastes is a necessary step in order to establish suitable assessment strategies with the aim of reducing the leaching, transport and widespread of ecotoxic elements from mining wastes to the environment (surface water, sediments, soils and air). As a consequence of the weathering of As-rich mineral phases, high arsenic contents are commonly detected in effluents from mine voids and spoil heap leachates.
