"To more rigorously address tunneling risks to above-ground structures, vulnerability evaluation of all structures along a tunnel route is required. This multi-block area along the route can be considered a district. To fully assess each structure within a tunnel’s zone of influence, a multi-block or district-level model may provide new insights as to risk evaluation and mitigation strategies. However populating such a model with the existing geometry of the built environment poses a major challenge as measured drawings are not readily available for all structures along a tunnel’s route. Cost-effective population of such a model could arguably involve remote sensing data in the form of laser scanning or photogramme-try. However even for unreinforced masonry structures, where external, above-ground geometries can be captured, without a prohibitively expensive building-by-building, in person survey many factors would remain unknown. To consider these uncertainties in an automatic way, a performance assess-ment framework is proposed. Such a framework allows a more rigorous, initial, risk quantification than is currently possible within the simple empirical models generally being used in industry when tunneling risk is initially assessed. This paper introduces (within the allowable space limits of this format) consider-ations for auto-population and application of a district-level, tunnel-risk screening tool. INTRODUCTION Challenging topography, intense urbanization and infrastructure development, combined with limited land availability and a growing awareness of environmental issues have lead to increasing usage of un-derground spaces to control aboveground traffic and provide essential services in metropolitan areas. Tunneling, however, is not without its own risks, especially with respect to aboveground structures whether it be widespread minor damage (Burland et al. 2001) or the more notable, although less fre-quent, large-scale collapses such as the 2003 Shanghai (Allianz 2015) or 2004 Singapore (Magnus et al. 2005) events."

Increasing concerns of industrial hygiene and worker health issues and resulting regulatory actions, coupled with continuing advances in mining systems, are placing new burdens on the industry and Federal Government; particularly, mine ventilation departments. More encompassing worker health programs are required to respond to Federal promulgation of regulations and to keep abreast of techno- logical advances in the mining industry. The relationship between the mining industry and Federal agencies involved in rulemaking is presented, along with the rationale of an Industrial Hygiene Management Plan. This plan or strategy focuses on developing partnerships and collaborative research groups to address the controversial health issues facing not only the mining workforce, but our society.

The multicomponent reactive transport model MIN3P can be used to simulate the evolution of pore water, pore gas, and the mineralogical composition in mine waste environments. The model is formulated for variably-saturated conditions, considers transport of dissolved and gaseous species, and describes geochemical reactions based on a partial equilibrium formulation. Reaction processes included are complexation, oxidation-reduction, ion-exchange, mineral dissolution-precipitation and gas exsolution- dissolution reactions. An example application, describing the generation of acid mine drainage and subsequent reactive transport for a ID-vertical profile in a tailings impoundment near Elliot Lake, Ontario, is provided.

Mining in semi-arid climates can produce environmental impacts that will not begin for hundreds of years, but once started, may continue for thousands of years. Pit lakes may eventually exceed toxicity thresholds as metals are evaporatively concentrated, and slow unsaturated flow through acid-generating waste can eventually load several kg-SO4/m2-yr to underlying water tables. U.S. regulations are poorly equipped to respond to delayed and long-term environmental impacts, delaying permits as operators and regulators grapple with uncertainty. Improved uncertainty analysis, additional long-term mitigation options, and explicit regulatory guidance offer solutions to this dilemma.

"Tunnel inspections are increasingly needed to ensure that aging infrastructure does not fail in service. To this end the time between inspections is being reduced, the thoroughness of each inspection is being increased to provide for a more detailed assessment of conditions and inventory defects. The conventional Tunnel Report, containing hand-drawn maps and/or photos, and a log describing observed defects and areas of deterioration, is being increasingly replaced by LiDAR generated 3-D surface maps. The data collection process that traditionally supports development of a Tunnel Report is labor-intensive, taking crew-days of engineering effort, and requires partial or full stoppage of tunnel operations. In an urban setting, such multi-day interruptions in service are difficult to countenance for a near-capacity tunnel operation. Under time pressures, the detail and accuracy of the manual inspection process will inevitably be compromised, resulting in a high cost, low quality product. As the tunnel inspection window decreases the argument for incorporating laser scanning in to the inspection process is increased dramatically... The 3D scan technology allows detailed and accurate data to be collected within the tight time frames demanded by the owners and operators of critical infrastructure. Not only does the use of laser scanners improve the 3D accuracy of the data collected, it also, enhances the efficiency and safety of the inspection process, reduces data collection and processing costs and enhances the reliability of results over time. The paper will also demonstrate the value of adding photogrammetric data to the 3D Model to show surface defect discoloration. The accurate and detailed data collected by a combination of LiDAR and photogrammetric techniques provide superior data needed to inform critical asset management decisions related to maintenance, repair and replacement."

The design and planning for the construction of a new passageway to improve access and circulation to better accommodate anticipated increased passenger flow within Grand Central—42nd Street Station. The passageway includes the break-in of an over 100-year-old station cavern with an innovative design implementing a protective structure above the existing track to allow for safe train operations and passenger circulation during construction. Construction of the new passageway follows the Sequential Excavation Method. This paper will present the innovative solutions that went into the preliminary design and planning considering construction access, site logistics, risk management, structural retrofitting, instrumentation and monitoring, and impact assessments.

The notion of achieving limitless productivity produces peak levels of enthusiasm in today's mining leaders. Highly-productive mines do not happen by chance --they are created by progressive leaders. The quest for productivity improvement, exclusively through capital investment and technological advances, is an incomplete process. Improvement, through capital and technology, is often not achieved because we fail to energize the true potential and commitment in our employees.

In 1985 the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a study to evaluate the emerging selective agglomeration processes (Killmeyer, 1985). This paper covers a recent similar study evaluating an associated technology, the emerging advanced froth flotation processes. This study has goals similar to those of the 1985 study: to evaluate the emerging froth flotation technologies collectively and determine how far they have progressed in their ability to clean ultrafine coal, and to assess the differences among the participants. The major concern again in this study was not the level of development, nor the economics of each individual process but only the current technical performance.

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

Excavation and loading are primary operations in the surface mine production chain, constituting a significant component of production costs. This makes excavation and loading important cost centers that need to be improved to lower production costs. Optimizing the design and use of excavators will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations, and this requires a thorough understanding of the soil-tool interaction process. Modeling the interaction process accurately is the key to this optimization. Experimental and analytical methods have provided limited information on the behavior of soils during excavation. Finite element (Fe) analysis of soil-cutting blade interaction produces some advantages over experimental and analytical methods. However, the soil constitutive equations used in most of the available Fe analyses fail to adequately model the plastic behavior of the soil. This work uses Fe modeling to study the behavior of formation-cutting blade interactions in dozer excavation. The formation is modeled as a nonlinear elastoplastic material using the modified cam-clay (mCC) model. The model accounts for soil-tool interface friction, and progressive and continuous cutting at the blade tip. The results provide soil forces, a progressive developed failure zone and soil displacement fields. The sensitivity analysis of changes in blade angle on cutting force shows that the cutting force increases with increasing blade angle. The cutting depth of the blade had a similar effect on blade cutting force. Increasing the depth of cut increases the required cutting force. Increasing the coefficient of friction at the soil blade interface increases the blade cutting force. Reducing the coefficient of friction at the soil blade interface from 0.3 to 0.05 reduces the cutting force by 22.3%. The percentage represents the maximum potential savings in blade cutting force. This research initiative advances the frontiers of soil-tool interactions during excavations to expand the limited knowledge in this critical area.

Mining is most vital to our civilization. The current model of extraction technologies was designed without an expiration date and therefore generates environmental effects that are severe. Mining results-effects have been traditionally accepted and promoted around the world since Agricola described mining. Mining’s extractive technology is outmoded and standardized and inflicts negative results-effects on nature. Those results are liabilities dimensioned in legacy and type of nature able to provide to the next generation. In order to design, build, and transform mining effectively we must ask: What is the vision of mining? Mining has exhausted its antiquated mindset of over 200 years. Now it merely pilots us into crisis. The challenge today is to resolve the socio-environmental conflicts globally with a radical transformation of the mining business at its core. This paper illustrates that old mindsets must be radically updated or the concept of mining will continue to be trapped. Changing the mindset will enable discourse toward a new destiny. These changes will change mining for the better. We are able to evolve and get different results than in the past by pursuing a new legacy to live in harmony with nature for many more years. INTRODUCTION Minerals are supported by the law of conservation of mass. They have the unique characteristics of being finite, exhaustible, unsustainable, and have an unlimited recycling. Minerals are also hard to find because we have explored and virtually exhausted the whole crust of this planet. Orebodies that used to be considered world class are almost exhausted. In the short-term, it would be almost impossible to find new world class orebodies unless they could be extracted from the ocean, the moon or other planets like Mars. Mining is designed to extract minerals for profit and to keep civilizations functioning. Subsequently, mining has a social issue that is an economic issue. Thus, mining must be seen as a real and urgent subject matter that must be protected in thought and in fact. The actual mining extractive technologies produce disequilibrium in nature that has unknowable effects in the course of time. History is filled with the negative consequences to nature due to the model of mining. The evidence of these effects from mining’s model is apparent in repetitive liabilities around the world. The effects negatively impact nature without any consideration to how these impacts will manifest themselves in the future. This model of mining is widespread and extolled in every corner of the planet because it is old and familiar and although wasteful and outdated, we do not want to expend financial resources from profit or elsewhere to explore newer ideas, methods, or technologies that would help us keep a sustainable harmony between extraction and nature. We need a new vision for mining today and to explore in what way academia can and must play a social role in the teaching of mining methods. We need to question why we continue to support the old model of mining and to ask ourselves what prevents us from updating and modernizing the method of mining to meet the current needs not just of civilization but the urgent needs to undo some of the damage to the earth. This paper hopes to develop a method to change our minds about how we conduct the business of mining in order to control the destiny of it.

The approach to Risk Management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate successful delivery of a project. The $NZ4.4B Auckland City Rail Link project is the largest and most complex transportation project yet undertaken in New Zealand. Risk management prior and during procurement was undertaken in accordance the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP) and through the use of an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline report. This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. This included the use of cloud-based delivery of geotechnical data and 3-D geological models, reducing tendering costs and allowing a focus on risk mitigation measures during the tender rather than data management.

Pipeline or borehole free-fall transfer of material has long been done in support of underground mining. This paper addresses some characteristics and design elements in selecting systems suitable to the transferred media and the mine requirements. Though aspects of overall systems are discussed, principal attention is directed to the slickline/dropline/transfer line and the discharge diverter/rockbox/energy dissipator/boot. These terms are common to these systems, often used interchangeably, and will be used as appropriate to the material, equipment and construction. Following several design sections, fabrication and construction, and system operating and maintenance procedures are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Resin bolting systems continue to gain popularity in underground coal mines in the United States, and their general success under a wide range of geological and operational conditions is well documented. In 1984, 36% of all bolts used were resin-grouted systems. However, many questions dealing with basic support mechanisms and the influence of various factors on bolt effectiveness in situ remain only partially answered. The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center conducted a major research project to investigate the influence of installation procedures on the effectiveness of resin-grouted roof bolts. The project consisted of two main studies: the first dealing with the contribution of bearing plates to the load-carrying capability of the bolt; the second examining the relationship between installed grout column and the anchorage capacity as measured by the standard pull-out test. Additionally, a finite-element computer model and other analytical and empirical techniques were applied to aid in the basic understanding of the test procedures and to examine the load transfer mechanism in resin-grouted bolts, which to date has not been comprehensively assessed. The plate study includes field test results from two mines (Fig. 1). At these test sites two behavioral parameters were measured: the actual loads that bearing plates were subjected to when installed in conjunction with full-column resin grouted bolts, and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Results indicate that bearing plates are subjected to varying degrees of loading, which range from conventional installation pressures of 2.2 kN (500 lb), up to a measured load of 142.4 kN (32,000 lb) when the immediate roof is shifting and deforming. These measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Differential sag stations, installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites, show the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement. The column-length study addresses possible reductions in anchorage capacity of "full column" bolts. These reductions could result from such factors as the loss of grout to surrounding strata, or improper mixing of catalyst and resin. The ability to predict the dewatering performance of an industrial hydrocyclone from a laboratory-model hydrocyclone is of great importance. In this study, laboratory-scale hydrocyclone experiments were conducted using silica sand samples at 10 percent solid concentration for dewatering with Mozley hydrocyclones with diameters of 2 in. and 4 in. The objective is to predict the design parameters for an industrial dewatering cyclone to achieve higher solid concentration in the underflow. A model was developed based on the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model with the help of a commercial simulator for a hydrocyclone operating at 100 t/h and 20 percent solid concentration to achieve 80 percent solid recovery at 45 percent solid concentration in the underflow.

The first step in the development of a gold deposit is the detailed mineralogical examination of the ore types, major and minor mineral constituents and their association. It is extremely difficult and expensive mineralogically to characterize the occurrence and association of gold with other minerals for low-grade refractory ores (less than 0.1 troy oz/t Au). Even if a mineralogist can identify a gold-associated particle or two, one wonders how representative they are of the deposit. What alterative does a metallurgist have for characterization of gold-bearing ores? Diagnostic leach procedures, consisting of a series of sequential leaches, can provide the metallurgist/mineralogist with reasonably good Indication of the deportation of gold in the various mineral matrices. This information con help the metallurgist concentrate on the most promising process options In the Initial stages of the project development process.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. "As part of the new 2nd Ave Subway Project, an existing tunnel constructed in the 1970’s will be connected to the new subway and used as new running tunnels. The existing tunnel had to be modified to comply with newer structural and fire life safety codes and to be connected to the new cut and cover station at 96th St. This paper will discuss the complexities of tying an existing tunnel constructed over 40 years ago into the new station and allowing for movements due to the unloading of the existing tunnel and the differential settlement of the two structures during both the construction and permanent condition. Topics that will be discussed include structural analysis, ground improvement techniques, selection of support of excavation walls, working in contaminated soil and instrumentation and monitoring of the structures. It will also cover retrofitting the tunnel to comply with updated Fire/Life/Safety requirements. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Second Avenue Subway (SAS) will be the first major expansion of New York’s subway system in over 50 years. To be constructed in four phases, it will run from 125th St. in Harlem to Hanover Square in the Financial District (see Figure 1). For most of its length, the alignment is directly under the Second Avenue roadway."
