Background groundwater quality is often used to drive remediation programs at sites with waters that have been affected by mining activities. In the past, these levels were sometimes chosen without rigorous statistical and geochemical analysis. A probability-distribution approach was used at the Sweetwater Uranium Project to separate a large set of geochemical data into populations that represent contribu¬tions from different sources. Natural background populations were identified for major ions, metals and radionuclides, and these were submitted to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commis¬sion (NRC) to modify the extent of a corrective-action pro¬gram and to establish control limits for future monitoring.

Reduction in the quality of resources and attendant increase in the quantities of fines to be processed present a major economic and environmental challenge for resource - based industries. It is becoming evident that agglomeration by immiscible liquid wetting will play a significant role in the treatment of these fines. Liquid phase agglomeration can be adapted to separate solids or liquids in highly divided form from liquid suspensions and emulsions. Diverse opportunities in coal fines recovery, novel fuels technologies and oily waste water treatment are cited here. The oil agglomeration of extreme fines from coal tailings, with consequent dramatic reduction in refuse for disposal, is now a commercial reality. It is suggested that this approach can serve as a prototype for the processing of extreme fines in an economical and environment ally sound manner.

A vast majority of longwall operations in the US use shield-type hydraulic supports to provide ground control along the longwall face. The three-dimensional, finite-element technique combined with a progressive failure approach was utilized to simulate interaction between shields and surrounding strata and determine various loading conditions. In addition, a separate finite-element model of the shield structure was made to study responses of each longwall shield to the different loading conditions. Shield responses under various loading conditions and the shield characteristics, such as shield stiffness, the ability of resisting horizontal forces, and the effect of shield height, were studied based on the results from finite-element analyses. The results can provide the basis of effective shield design and be used for evaluation of the shield performance. It is suggested that a technique incorporating the finite-element method be developed to evaluate real-time shield performance for the purpose of effective ground control.

High pressure roll grinding (HPGR) is a mature but still expanding comminution technology. In the metals mining industry, HPGR is slowly gaining acceptance as a cost-efficient, high-throughput alternative for plant optimization. The increasing need to treat ores with progressively lower grades, complex mineralogies, refractory metal occurrence and variable rock types requires an energy-efficient comminution technology that reduces metallurgical problems inherent in conventional crushing and grinding, while stabilizing leach and flotation circuits and increasing metals extraction. This paper will summarize our latest HPGR pilot test results for gold and copper projects in the United States and South America and their confirmation through the first HPGR operation in copper mining. This paper will also stress the use of the high pressure grinding roll as a metallurgical tool. The application of HPGR for the treatment of heap leach SX-EW ores, semi-refractory gold ores, waste rock material and concentrator feeds will be illustrated.

Extensive exploration has resulted in delineation of a massive sulfide district on the north flank of the east-central Alaska range. The district covers approximately 400 mi2 and contains numerous stratiform, transposed and some replacement type sulfide deposits ranging in size from less than 1 million st to 20 million st. Five types of ores were sampled for the study. Mineralogical analysis revealed that the minerals are too fine grained for conventional grinding and beneficiation. Hydrometallurgical studies were conducted using ferric chloride as a lixiviant. Ore microscopic studies as well as electron microprobe analyses of minerals in the raw samples and leach residues explained the low recoveries for certain elements as well as sources of impurities that need to be eliminated from the process streams.

High voltage electrical discharge in water causes instantaneous release of accumulated energy into water. The experiment described in this paper regards the utilization of the electric discharge phenomenon in rock splitting. The pressure in the shock waves created by the discharge inside a small volume of water enclosed in solid rock causes stresses which can result in breakage of rock. Holes drilled in tested samples were notched in order to weaken the tensile strength of the rock and achieve a uniformly directed split. The influence of the notches was theoretically analysed and compared with experimental data. Results of the tests have been statistically elaborated in order to correlate the newly-created surface to the energy supplied.

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way, or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example for the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the USA. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. "The South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel (SHCST) project is a significant component of the Hartford Metropolitan District’s (MDC) long-term control plan (LTCP), which is overseen by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). This project will address a portion of the MDC’s Clean Water Project (CWP), which will reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs), eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), and reduce nitrogen released into the Connecticut River. The purpose of the SHCST project is to eliminate West Hartford and Newington SSOs, eliminate Franklin area CSOs discharging to Wethersfield Cove and minimize CSO discharges to the South Branch Park River. The locations of each overflow are shown in Fig. 1. In 2010, the district prepared a preliminary design report (PDR) for the SHCST project, which included relief of the Folly Brook trunk sewer and proposed to keep the tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval shaft within the city limits of Hartford. Figure 1 shows the 2010 PDR recommended tunnel route. Subsequent to the PDR, the objectives of the SHCST have slightly shifted. In accordance with ongoing revisions to the LTCP, relief of the Folly Brook Trunk Sewer is no longer necessary. Additionally, the MDC has decided to perform less sewer separation in the Franklin Avenue drainage area. To replace the sewer separation, new relief points are proposed within the Franklin area and will be diverted to the SHCST. Figure 1 also shows the current recommended tunnel route (Alignment F). During 2012, the MDC conducted an evaluation of the potential of connecting the proposed North Tunnel (originally proposed as an independent tunnel with its own pump station) into the South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel. This evaluation concluded that the two proposed tunnels could reasonably be connected together and operated as a single tunnel system utilizing the tunnel pump station at the eastern terminus of the South Hartford Tunnel (Fig. 2). It also was concluded that this alternative was less costly than two independent tunnel systems."

"There have been about 42 fatalities in underground coal mines between 1984 and 2015 where the victim was struck, pinned, or run over by a mobile machine (MM) such as a shuttle car, scoop, or battery hauler. MSHA has issued a proposed rule requiring proximity detection systems (PDS) on MMs in an effort to prevent future fatalities. Currently approved PDSs use electromagnetic (EM) technology to detect the presence of a miner and impose machine controls to prevent contact. The disadvantages of an EM-based PDS on MMs include the need for a miner-wearable component (MWC), environmental interferences, EM interferences from other devices, and low localization range and accuracy. NIOSH researchers are investigating alternate technologies that could improve the capabilities of the current PDSs. Many technologies were reviewed, and NIOSH researchers identified RFID, LIDAR, RADAR, ultrasonic detection, and computer vision as candidates for PDS development. The performance characteristics of each technology and its applicability to an underground mining environment will be discussed, along with international developments and implementations, and the concept of sensor fusion. INTRODUCTION PDSs provide safety to mine workers by detecting their presence (and in some cases location) around a machine. These PDSs provide a warning zone, which triggers an alarm, and a stop zone, which halts the machine before it contacts the miner. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued a final rule requiring that PDSs be installed on all continuous mining machines (CMMs) on the working section, with the exception of full-faced machines, according to a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment [1]. The PDSs that were designed for CMMs have since been adapted to other mobile machines. Mobile machines include scoops, which are used as general utility vehicles, as well as coal hauling machines, such as shuttle cars, ram cars, and continuous haulage systems. MSHA has examined all accident reports from 1984 to 2014, and determined that 42 fatalities could have been prevented on mobile machines had a PDS been installed [2]. As such, MSHA issued a proposed rule that would require mobile machines on working sections (with the exception of longwall sections) to be equipped with a PDS. This rule would follow a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment. Currently available PDSs are based on electromagnetic (EM) technology. NIOSH researchers developed a shell-based magnetic flux density distribution model [3] for determining the position of a miner near a machine. A typical system would consist of four generators positioned around the perimeter of the machine. Each generator is a coil of insulated wire wrapped around a ferrite core. The magnetic field strength is proportional to the current running through the coil. Miners working on the section have an MWC, which is a transceiver that measures the field strength emitted by the generators and transmits a data packet over an RF link which contains the field strength reading to the PDS controller mounted on the machine. The magnetic field generators are pulsed sequentially such that the MWC can identify which generator’s field strength it is reading. This type of system utilizes the principle of magnetic flux density: the closer the MWC is to the field generators, the higher the field strength reading. Thus a miner’s presence can be determined once he gets too close to the machine, because his MWC will measure a magnetic flux density beyond a certain threshold. These thresholds are utilized on a per-generator basis to “shape” the fields for both warning and stop zones around a machine, as illustrated in Figure 1."

"This paper presents the evaluation Montana Tech completed for the Western Energy Company Rosebud Mine relating to the benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies over traditional methods for topographic surveys. These technologies include Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), photogrammetry, and laser scanning/LIDAR. Utilizing these technologies, large areas such as reclamation areas and cast blasts can be surveyed in a timely manner for use by the mining operation. The areas that were evaluated were the improvements in the safety of employees and the time required to collect data. In addition, there is also a potential cost savings for the operation, all while not affecting the accuracy of the data that is collected. PROJECT BACKGROUND Accurate topographic survey data is critical to successful surface mining operations. It is used for mine planning and design as well as permit compliance. Currently, employees typically collect survey data using GPS equipment or total stations. These methods can be dangerous, as they require employees to work near large operating mobile equipment, edge of high walls, and on piles of stacked steep-sloped loose material. Aerial and satellite photographs, performed by a contractor, can be used to obtain some of this information, but it is expensive and may not be attainable during overcast conditions. Montana Tech, along with the Rosebud Mine, conducted research on the accuracy, cost, and other benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies. Some of the methods studied include, but are not limited to, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or Vehicles (UAV), photogrammetry, and laser scanning. These methods were evaluated to determine if these technologies provide mining companies with a safer, cost effective, and accurate method to collect data for surface mining operations. The project scope was to evaluate various surveying techniques to determine which techniques would be applicable for the Rosebud Mine and complete a trade-off study comparing the new techniques with currently used methods. The trade-off study included an analysis of the technological differences between the methods, safety and legal considerations for the new techniques, operational limits, and the costs associated with each technique. Working with the Rosebud Mine team, techniques were selected for field trial and accuracy comparison. This paper presents a literature review of applicable technical papers and a summary of the Federal Aviation Administration regulations for UAS, followed by a study comparing conventional GPS topographic surveys with UAS based systems and laser scanning systems. The comparison of the various methods was broken into the following four categories: operator safety analysis, time comparison, survey accuracy, and cost analysis. After all of these portions of comparison were completed a recommendation was provided based on the evaluation that was performed."

The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on the kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated-weathering tests that were performed in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests, the samples were crushed, ground and stored for various periods of time in either argon or air. The test results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The interpretation of the differences was based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings that changed with time. "Dry" oxidation produced surface coatings that had properties different from those produced by "wet" oxidation. The significance of these results to pyrite/reagent interactions during flotation and in evaluating the acid-mine-drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

Qualitative and interpretive information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging, and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system provides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data. A case study using a large reference database is presented; the indicator conditioned estimates have a smaller conditional bias and a smaller error variance than the ordinary kriging estimates. The results also showed that the indicator conditioned estimator is more efficient for selection in mining.

Laboratory conducted cutting tests at traverse speeds up to 1 m/s have been undertaken with high pressure water jets assisting the cutting action of drag tools. Four sandstones and one limestone have been investigated, which represents a wide range of compressive strength. Variables investigated include water jet pressure, nozzle diameter, depth of cut, traverse speed, jet position, and tool bluntness. The test programme has allowed a model to be developed which describes the action of water jet assistance for three conditions dependent on the ability of the jet to penetrate the rock: where no significant penetration occurs, where penetration is greater than 50% of the tool depth, and an optimum condition around 30% of tool depth.

When data points, plotted on X-Y coordinates, lie along a simple line, their regression can be matched to a high degree of accuracy by one or other simple algebraic expression (Boot and Cox, 1970). Under these conditions, interpolation is axiomic. Further, if the expression defines no more than a straight line, a parabola or other such line which can be related to some specific mechanism which generates the points, then extrapolation might be valid. However, any extrapolation would depend on the continued, unchanged functioning of the mechanism. Studies of more intricate assemblages of data points have long been based on representation by means of series (Fourier, 1811). If sufficiently complicated, several different algebraic expressions can represent the same intricate regression accurately (Hoerl, 1954). However, without reference to a mechanism, no extrapolation is contemplated. Typically, variations in the prices of minerals with time are. sufficiently complicated to render invalid any simple attempts at extrapolation. The computer, however, can be used to derive algebraic expressions which match complicated regressions and also can be represented by the functioning of a mechanism (Becker, 1984). The techniques involved have been applied with advantage in the study of time series representations of mineral prices.

The combustion of petroleum products produces emissions which contain oxides of nitrogen (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), and particulate matter (PM) which have adverse health and environmental effects. In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of water-fie1 emulsions as a substitute for conventional fuels. Emulsified fuels are emulsions of water in fuel, which are typically made of 10 to 20 percent of water mired with certain additives and fuel. Studies have shown that the emulsified diesel can significantly reduce the emissions of NO, PM and car- bon monoxide and increase the fuel efficiency. In order to produce a stable diesel emulsion, the development of an effective surfactant additive is critical. The stability of diesel emulsions is influenced by many factors, including size distribution of the droplets, the viscosity of the continuous phase, the physical properties of the interfacial film, and temperature. This paper describes a method to produce emulsified diesel and combustion results obtained from various tests. It has been found that the diesel emulsion made with this additive package was stable during the test, and the emissions were lower in NO, CO, and PM compared to the baseline diesel.

From a computational point of view calculating a variogram is a perfectly simple operation. For any particular study, we know which variable is to be studied. We also have a good idea of structural parameters which are likely to be important (the scale of the phenomenon, the probable direction of the anisotropy, etc.). Finally, we know the structure of the data file. So we can specify the parameters to be used to calculate the variogram (the distance classes, the angular classes, etc.). This allows us to decide which variogram program is most appropriate (1, 2 or 3 dimensional data, regularly or irregularly spaced, etc. ) . In general, the basic statistics (mean, variance, correlation? etc.) have been calculated beforehand, and so the distribution of the data is already known. Consequently, the choice of the parameter values fed into the variogram is by no means arbitrary. But it must nevertheless be made before the' variogram is calculated. If the resulting variogram is not satisfactory, the whole sequence of operations has to be repeated. Before going on to see how this can be avoided, it is worthwhile having a brief look at the common causes of "unsatisfactory" variograms.

In long-term open pit production planning, a series of nested and maximum-value pits is usually generated first. These pits are then considered as possible pushbacks over a number of planning periods. To determine the best pushback in each planning period, the pits are evaluated for their technical and economical feasibilities under certain production constraints. Parameterization is a commonly used technique to generate a series of pits. In almost all cases, however, some of the consecutive pits generated by this technique are too far apart from each other. This is called the "gap" problem. It may make the entire pit series useless for production planning purposes. A new pit gener¬ating algorithm has been developed to overcome the gap problem. Through this algorithm, a series of nested maxi¬mum-value pits can be generated with a controllable size increment. The logic of the algorithm is illustrated through a small hypothetical case. Its capability of generating maximum-value pits that are as optimal as those generated by parameterization and its advantages over parameteriza¬tion are presented through an actual gold deposit case.

At the dawn of the computer age in the early 1950's, few people in either the minerals industry or the field of electronic data processing (EDP) would have predicted the tremendous impact that the computer has had on the way we conduct our everyday lives and businesses. Herman Hollerith himself (see next page), the Columbia University mining engineer 'turned statistician who developed the first punched card electronic tabulating machines for the US Census Office in the late 1880's, would doubt- less be amazed at the progress that has been made in the application of data processing techniques to nearly all aspects of the mining cycle (Aul, 1974). More than any other factor, the availability of economical computing equipment has led the way for the development of the broad range of mining computer methods described in this text. While limits have been identified for many of the technologies commonly in use today, new technological advancements point to continued exponential advancements in computing price-performance in the 1980's. With those advancements, we may look forward to continued expansion of the role computers will play in mineral production.

The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.
