Real-time monitoring makes it possible to detect any disturbance occurring in production, while decision instruments can efficiently assist decision-makers to optimize production, reduce iterative workload, obtain better solutions, and preview possible results. Technologies for the above already exist and have been proven in the process industry, i.e. refining and smelting. Optimization is also essential for profitable and stable mining production. Real-time monitoring has already taken hold in mining operations, especially in surface mining, while optimization techniques have also been widely used in underground mining, particularly for planning and scheduling. This review is limited to the hard-rock mining production of metallic ores such as gold and copper. It reviews optimization techniques developed for mine planning and scheduling, and communication technologies suitable for underground applications. It also presents control features for individual operation units, and discusses the technical viability of a mining production real-time optimization (MPRTO) system for underground mines, with possible benefits and challenges. Operational disturbances always occur in mine production. An MPRTO system can be useful to maintain operational effectiveness and efficiency by allowing quick changes to short-term plans. This paper briefly describes the MPRTO system, including the input, output, and basic algorithms. The technical prerequisites for the system specified here are already available. Most flotation plants use a static reagent scheme, i.e., a set combination of collectors, frothers, and modifiers. This scheme is usually developed and refined over time to deliver optimal (not necessarily the highest) performance when the major ore types are fed to the plant. However, when ore types or mineralogy coming to the plant change substantially (and this often happens as different areas of the pit(s) are mined and crushed at the same time), there are upsets in the process, typically leading to lower recoveries. Adapting to this variability is usually done only when performance drastically suffers, and the changes made may be too late and bring additional variability in performance. The premise for SmartFloat™ is that the reagent suite needs to be dynamic, adapting continuously to changes in the ore and operating conditions. Solvay has combined advanced analytics and data science techniques with its expertise in flotation reagent chemistry to systematically and automatically achieve the above, and in real time. Thus, SmartFloat™ is optimizing the reagent suite continuously, removing the additional variability created by belated human interactions resulting in a better and more stable process. In addition, this advanced approach allows for continuous improvement by identifying poor performing ore domains and improving the reagent suite using Solvay’s FM-100 approach to design appropriate solutions.

Laboratory investigations were conducted to establish the feasibility of bioleaching a mixed copper oxide/sulphide rougher concentrate from Nchanga Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt. The objective was to determine the kinetics and extent of copper extraction for this material. Batch experiments were conducted under different solution conditions in stirred tank bioreactors. The progress of (bio)leaching was monitored through measurements of soluble ferrous and ferric iron, copper, pH, and redox potentials, while bacterial activity was monitored online through 02 and C02 gas utilization rates. About 20 per cent copper was solubilized within 2 hours in all cases of non-oxidative (abiotic), oxidative (abiotic), and bioleaching experiments. This was attributed to the dissolution of mainly copper oxides. Subsequently, bioleaching experiments resulted in an overall copper extraction of 93 per cent, with up to 8 g.L-1 copper after six leaching days, compared to 58 per cent copper extraction in the abiotic oxidative acid leaching experiments. However, there was little effect of time (i.e. poor dissolution kinetics) on copper recovery for abiotic non-oxidative acid leaching of the material. Hence, the rate of sulphide leaching increased due to the activity of bacteria. Thus, the material is potentially bioleachable under mesophilic conditions. However, more exhaustive test work needs to be conducted to establish the effect of bioleaching variables and heat requirement.

"A renewed interest in nuclear power around the world in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is going to increase demand for uranium as fuel. This will result in more uranium being mined, which will in turn increase associated environmental pressures, such as fresh water use. A move to lower quality waters containing impurities such as chloride would help alleviate these pressures. In this work, we determined the uptake characteristics of weakly basic anion exchange resin Ps-EDA towards uranium from saline solutions in a dynamic flow column. Breakthrough curves were produced, with suppression of uptake being observed for chloride concentrations above 5 g L-1. Calculated resin saturation capacities at zero and 5 g L-1 chloride are comparable with literature values for strong-base anion exchange resins, and exceed those published for weak-base resins up to 20 g L-1 chloride. Data has been fitted to multiple breakthrough models, with the modified dose-response model most effectively predicting uranium recovery. The results show that the ethylenediamine functionality could be suitable for use in future uranium processing flow sheets where a high-saline lixiviant is used. IntroductionIon exchange (IX) is a key technology in the uranium mining industry and is well established for the extraction of uranium from both acidic and alkaline leach liquors (Edwards and Oliver, 2000). It was first employed in 1952 at the West Rand mine in South Africa (Ford, 1993; Taylor, 2016). H2SO4 and Na2CO3 are the most commonly employed lixiviants used to solubilize uranium in acidic and alkaline leach conditions respectively. The chemistry of these systems causes uranium to form anionic sulphate or carbonate complexes, which can be taken advantage of by anion exchange resins.Another major technology for the extraction and purification of uranium from leach liquors is solvent extraction (SX). This technique involves the extraction of uranium from the aqueous phase into an immiscible organic layer. Although this is a commonly used method, there are major drawbacks to it, including the use of large volumes of flammable solvents, solvent loss, phase disengagement, third phase formation, and the production of problematic degradation products (Veliscek-Carolan, 2016). These problems can be circumvented through the use of IX resins."

Introduction Structure appears to be of secondary importance to the Bushveld Complex when viewed from a distance. However, a closer look already reveals that large fault zones bound the Bushveld Complex. These fault zones are deep-seated crustal lineaments of continental magnitude such as the Thabazimbi-Murchison Lineament, the Johannesburg-Barberton Lineament, the Palala Fault zone and the Rustenburg fault. Furthermore, the Bushveld Complex is transected by large faults such as the Vlakfontein Fault, visible in the Pilanesberg, the Steelport Fault and the Laersdfrift Fault in the Eastern Bushveld, the Brits Graben, and a multitude of dyke generations (Figure 1). When pursuing structures on a project scale, the lack of outcrop, particularly in the western part of the Bushveld, is of no help for the exploration geologist. Consequently, the first dataset that needs to be considered is the Landsatimagery. Older Landsat TM 5 or newer Landsat ETM 7 will immediately reveal areas of outcrop for field visits, and, after further processing, indicate the geological units, in particular the platiniferous Critical and the Main Zone of the Rustenburg Layered Suite (Figure 2). Airborne magnetic surveys are the subsequent dataset necessary for any decent interpretation of the geology under the ?Black Turf? cover. Currently Anglo Platinum acquires aeromagnetic surveys with a flight height of 20 m and a line spacing of 50 m. These result in high-resolution imagery absolutely crucial for dyke delineation and dip modelling, stratigraphic layer detection, IRUP detection and possibly pothole discovery and fault delineation (Figures 3 and 4). However, the aeromagnetic surveys and the Landsat imagery reveal structures very much confined to the surface and may be hundreds of metres above the platiniferous reef horizons. This may lead to inaccuracies. When determining the underground structures for shaft sinking and mine planning, a 3D seismic survey is advisable. Too many shafts have been sunk in the Witwatersrand Basin for gold and in the Bushveld for platinum without sufficient information of the structure beneath. Recent 3D seismic surveys in the Bushveld have proven the technology and visualized the reef horizons and led to an interpretation of the underground structure (Figures 5 and 6). [ ]

The output of palladium in the U.S.S.R. greatly exceeds the internal usage. The primary purpose of this 200 page volume is therefore to record details of fundamental researches on the properties of this metal with a view to expanding its marketability. Theoretical studies have revealed a number of alloys with great promise in electrical instruments and for the chemical industry. The success of these researches in the U.S.S.R. and in the U.S.A., resulted in the industrial usage of palladium exceeding that of platinum in 1957 and increasing its lead during the next decade. This volume is divided into three parts. Section I covers the mineralogy, extraction and the physical metallurgy of the metal. It records a considerable area where the resistance to corrosion of palladium equals that of platinum. Section II deals with the preparation and the properties of palladium in alloys and contains a comprehensive metallographic treatment of the many binary alloy systems. Section III is devoted to industrial applications. The 460 references which are quoted are mainly from the U.S.S.R. but otherwise have a world-wide coverage. H.B.

The mechanization of haulage drilling in the gold mines of Anglo American Corporation by J. w. WILSON, Ph. D., C.Eng., M.AIME, F.!.Min.E., F.I.M.M. (Fellow), and J. G. TAYLOR, A.C.S.M., C.Eng., M.!.M.M. (Visitor) Some one-thousand kilometres of tunnels are mined annually in the gold mines of South Africa. Until two years ago, mechanized drilling on South African gold mines was not an economic proposition because of the availability of inexpensive labour and the fact that mechanized equipment developed for other mining markets could not perform satisfactorily in the tough, abrasive quartzites of theWitwatersrand System. A project team from the Technical Development Services Organisation of the Anglo American Corporation, in collaboration with various manufac turers of drill rigs and drill steel, has been concerned with the development of suitable equipment for mechanized main-haulage drilling. After two-and-a-half years of extensive testing and development of drifters, drill steels, and bits, many of the problems encountered have been sotved, and gradually jumbos mounting pneumatically and hydraulically powered drifters are being phased into production on various gold mines of the Group. A description of the development work is given, and actual operating results are recorded, together with details of the drilling and blasting techniques used.

The Chemwes uranium plant treats old gold-plant residues from the Sttifontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines by acid leaching, belt filtration, countercurrent ion exchange (ClX), and Bufflex solvent extraction (SX). The uranium is recovered by precipitation as ammonium diuranate. Absorption and elution in the CIX section are achieved in four NIMCIX columns operating as two parallel streams. Each loading column is 4,85 m in diameter and contains 12 absorption stages. The elution columns are 3 m in diameter and contain 8 stages. The eluant used is 10 per cent sulphuric acid at ambient temperature. During the commissioning and initial operating periods reported here, the plant yielded an average barren solution of 1,6 p.p.m. of U3O8 from a feed with a mean U3O8 concentration of 132 p.p.m. The U3O8 concentrations in the barren solution were better than 2 p.p.m. some 85 per cent of the time, and better than I p.p.m.73 per cent of the time. Investigations are underway to institute an automatic control system that will result in the U3O8 values on the resin and in the barren solution being maintained at or near the target values in spite of changes in the concentration of uranium in the feed solution.

In this research, the thermodynamic study of sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) solution in the presence and absence of H2SO4 and Fe3(SO4)3 was done. Eh-pH and equilibrium distribution diagrams were constructed using Outotec HSC Chemistry Software and the main stable ionic species were determined. Also, the mean activity coefficient and Pitzer model coefficients were evaluated. Effects of system composition, sodium persulfate concentration and temperature were investigated. According to the results, HS2O7 -, HS2O8 -, S5O3 2-, S4O3 2-, S3O3 2-, HS- and NaSO4 - are the main stable species in these three systems. Increasing of sodium persulfate concentration resulted in disappearing of SO4 2- and the appearance of NaSO4 -. The main effect of increasing the temperature from 25 to 75oC, is changing the stability regions of HS2O7 -, NaSO4 -, SO4 2- and S2-. From equilibrium studies, it was concluded that at 25 and 50oC, increasing the persulfate concentration results in a 55-60% decrease for HS2O7 - and an 20- 30% increase for HS2O8 -. At 75oC, HS2O8 - becomes the main species and its percentage decreases with increasing the persulfate concentration. Keywords: Thermodynamic, sodium persulfate, activity coefficient

The rate of face advance in the gold mines is between 3 and 10 m a month, with a median value of about 5 m a month; it follows that faces are blasted less frequently than is planned. There are many advantages in the use of short holes for stoping to give face advances of from 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast. This has the potential for so increasing the frequency of blasting that monthly rates of face advance could be improved significantly. Cleaning with face scrapers is too slow to permit the maximum achievement of a complete clean, drill, and blast cycle for each shift. Short-hole blasting, combined with the use of mechanical conveyors for face cleaning, offers the possibility of completing two such cycles each day, yielding monthly rates of face advance of up to 35 m. Experiments aimed at developing safe, unitized explosive charges well-suited to produce reliable face advances of 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast under a wide range of gold-mining conditions have been notably successful. A novel method of assessing the effectiveness of a blast based on the percentage of holes that leave socket lengths of 5 cm or less was used. Unitized charges of 60 per cent Ammon gelignite, 600 mm long by 25 mm in diameter, appear to be near optimal. The explosive is de-sensitized to obviate detonation by chance mechanical impact, but requires only a 6D detonator for initiation; it has good water-resistance. Means have been developed for producing these cartridges automatically, but the necessary machines will have to be built specially and the cartridges are not yet available in large numbers. A second experiment by way of an extended pilot production trial using these cartridges in holes 0,9 m long is now under way. Preliminary results indicate that drilling and explosive efficiencies and productivity are well above average, even though face scraping is being used. Unitized charges of this type are likely to prove even more advantageous when mechanical face conveyors come into use.

Cemented backfilling has enabled underground hard rock mines to extract orebodies more safely with improved ore recovery. It is important to estimate the minimum required strength parameters for a backfill mix by optimizing the binder percentage to enable cost-effective and safe stoping operations. We conducted three-dimensional numerical modelling to study the effect of various stoping parameters on the stability of a free-standing backfill wall. A Mohr-Coulomb material model was used for the backfill material and the rock-fill interface. A strength reduction technique, excluding friction angle, was employed to arrive at a minimum stable strength value for the backfill. For a given combination of strength values, the stability state of the backfill wall could be demarcated using a displacement and yield zone tracking method. The numerical modelling results are compared to some earlier theoretical models. From the simulations, a predictive equation is developed to predict the required strength parameters for a backfill mix to ensure a stable free-standing wall. Examples are given of the successful use of the predictive equation at some underground hard rock mine sites in India.

Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water. Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore (Kumba) continues to implement technologies focussed on improving safety and productivity; this forms part of the groups FutureSmart Mining initiative. The paper provides insights into the implementation of three technology solutions that improves the productivity of heavy mining equipment (HME). Enhancements to the short term mine planning (STMP) process, the effective use of a fleet management system (FMS) and the deployment of drones or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) are discussed. The implementation of these and other technologies contributed to a 13% and 22% increase in the overall equipment efficiency (OEE) of the primary HME at Kumba’s Sishen and Kolomela mines respectively. Four key success factors (KSF) are highlighted namely that Kumba’s technology implementation drive is a key enabler to the company’s strategy, has a strong focus on value-add, is underpinned by a holistic and integrated implementation approach and is people-centric.

Dolomite is a calcium carbonate sedimentary rock that can be found all over the world. In its calcined form it is employed for water treatment or as an additive in iron production. Calcined dolomite is produced at the Wünschendorfer Dolomitwerk GmbH in shaft furnaces (kilns). Because of an expansion of the mined deposit, significantly higher extraction costs were expected. Therefore, the existing upgrading processes for the kiln stone fraction had to be adapted and improved. This paper presents a process optimisation which allows for an increase of the yield of calcined dolomite by 10 % due to a redesign of the crusher circuit and by an additional 5 % due to a comprehensive characterisation of the kiln stone fraction itself. Here the interdependency between the pressure drop in the furnace during calcination and the size distribution of furnace stones was used to increase the amount of fine size fractions in the furnace feed without deterioration of the calcination process. A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.

Four 22%Cr series duplex stainless steels alloys containing varying nickel contents of approximately 5, 7, 9 and 13% were melted in a vacuum induction furnace, hot rolled, solution annealed and water quenched. Their corrosion behaviour was investigated in sulphuric acid and sodium chloride solutions using a potentiodynamic polarization technique. Increasing nickel contents have appreciable influence on their corrosion behaviour. Polarization curves show similarities in the uniform corrosion behaviour of the alloys in the solutions and a significant difference in their pitting behaviour in chloride environments. Alloy 2209 generally exhibited highest resistance to uniform corrosion while 2213 displayed distinct and best pitting corrosion resistance. Underground transport and communication in collieries was the theme selected for the 1983 mining school conducted by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The response from the industry was so good that three separate schools of one week each were arranged, and a total of 222 delegates attended.
