Heat contents were measured for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2S02 between 298° and 1,300° K, for Na2Ca2Si309 between 298° and 1,500° K, and for Na4CaSi3O9 between 298° and 1,350° K. Copper-block drop calorimetry was employed. Reversible, first-order transitions were found for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2Si309. The transition for Na2CaSi04 is at 830° K with a heat absorption of 160 cal/mole; that for Na2CagSi309 occurs at 750° K with a heat absorption of 1,550 cal/mole. Results for the other two silicates showed no irregularities. A table of heat content and entropy increments above 298.15° K and heat con-tent equations are included for use in thermodynamic calculations.

Amino acids were investigated in conjunction with rare-earth separation by ion exchange to determine whether they can be utilized effectively as retaining agents for metals separation using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) eluant at 85° to 90° C. Hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid (REDTA) and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) were the most effective amino acids investigated. Elements of atomic numbers 39 and 57 through 68 were effectively retained, whereas elements of atomic numbers 69 through 71 passed through the retaining-agent band. Utilization of REDTA or DTPA retaining agents allows an increase of 75 percent in the EDTA eluant concentration over that possible with hydrogen-or copper-retaining ions without precipitation occurring. Eighty-five percent recovery of the EDTA eluant collected before rare-earth breakthrough and during elution of lutetium, ytterbium, and thulium, and essentially complete recovery of the REDTA or DTPA retaining agents, are possible without extensive processing.

4. Preliminary Study - Remote Seal Checker 4.1 Introduction Determination of the completeness of each individual seal at the time of its emplacement is essential for an effective remote sealing system. A satisfactory seal checking technique should provide a signal which: (1) indicates percentage completion as the seal is emplaced (2) provides a definite indication of a complete seal (3) indicates the size of the unsealed area if a complete seal is not feasible This information is required to establish the need for additional seal material, the need for additional seals, and the risk likely involved in entering the mine., In many situations it is as important to know the quality of a seal as it is to build an effective one. It is likely that with repeated use the remote sealing technique developed by Foster-Miller Associates will be sufficiently reliable and predictable to preclude the seal checking requirement. It is recommended, however, that each seal be checked during construction to insure its completeness and increase the level of confidence so necessary in reopening the mine. 4.2 Description of General Problem Several characteristics of remote mine seals are important in considering techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of these seals. 2, Survey of Representative Group of Metal and Non-mental Mines Before proceeding to develop and analyze Emergency Escape System Guidelines, it was necessary to obtain a broad range of information, including both fact and opinion. Although there were many areas to consider, the surveys had three primary goals 1. To determine the current state of underground escapeway planning and execution in American, metal and non-metal mines. 2. To determine, for a wide range of mining conditions, what difficulties can be encountered in complying with present and proposed escapeway regulatory standards. 3. To determine what improvements could be made and what equipment and technology was available to aid in implementing these improvements. To accomplish these goals, three major surveys were undertaken¬ 1. Survey of MESA and State Mining officials, discussed in Section 2. 1. 2. Survey of representative U S metal and non-metal mines, discussed in Section 2. 2. 3. Survey of manufacturers supplying equipment, primarily hoisting, suitable for use in escape systems, the product information which was obtained is discussed in Section 7.

Metal production rates of 42 to 45 tons per day were obtained with hollow-core anthracite briquets in an experimental blast furnace. Tuyere pressures were about the same for both coke and briquet operations, but from 150 to 175 pounds more of briquets were required per ton of metal than were needed with coke. Furnace operations were comparatively smooth, furnace hanging occurring less often than in previous tests with anthracite briquets. Dust production was substantially higher than with coke, however, and metal quality could not be controlled by corrective burdening and moisture control.

Variations between laboratories on the silica and alumina content of calcined kyanite led to this Bureau of Mines study of the extent and nature of the differences. In particular, Bureau scientists hoped the study would lead to correction of the causes of the dissimilarities. A sample of calcined Kenya kyanite was analyzed by seven different laboratories familiar with silicate analysis. The compiled data indicated differences originating from lack of recovery of silica after two acidic dehydrations, from high alumina caused by several factors, from loss or gain of iron during sample fusion, and from indifference regarding the accurate determination of minor constituents.

To provide technology for achieving more efficient water filtration systems for the mineral industry, the Bureau of Mines performed demon-stration filtration tests at three iron ore mines and one steel mill. A comparison of equivalently sized magnesium oxide (MgO) and sand filters showed that MgO had a higher capacity and could operate at higher fil-tration rates than sand. In demonstration tests when alum (AlK(S04)2) was the coagulant, suspended solids breakthrough occurred even though the pressure across the filter (head loss) was 7 psig or less. Under these circumstances, the MgO demonstrated 20 to 100 pct greater filtra-tion capacity, defined in terms of the volume of water filtered before breakthrough. When an organic floccu1ant was used at one location, head loss was the run-limiting factor; the filters essentially plugged with-out any solids breakthrough.

The Bureau of Mines dried and carbonized two wood wastes, one softwood (redwood) and one hardwood (oak), using continuous, vertical entrainment techniques previously developed for use with coal. It was demonstrated that these techniques are readily applicable to wood waste and that appreciable changes in the yields of carbonization products can be obtained by varying operating conditions. A limited amount of experimental work was done on briquetting the charcoals. Firm briquets were formed with oak charcoal, although greater quantities of starch binder than used commercially for kiln-produced charcoal were required. Redwood charcoal did not briquet successfully under the test conditions employed.

"IntroductionIn its investigations relative to reducing the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning, the Bureau of Mines recently had its attention drawn to a compound2a sold under a trade name for which claims are reported to have been made regarding its efficacy in reducing that type of poisoning in automobile garages. Accordingly, some of the product was obtained and analyzed for its power to absorb, oxidize, or destroy carbon monoxide; and the results are herein reported.Description of ""Compound"" (quoted from manufacturer's circular)While the circular does not actually state that the ""compound"" protects against carbon monoxide, the inference is therein, because each of the two following quotations is below these respective headings; ""Carbon-Monoxide Poisoning,"" and ""Chronic Gassing Among Garage Workers.""The ""compound"" holds chlorine and oxygen gases in solution with formaldehyde, which unites with the hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid., giving an over-supply of oxygen which burns up carbon just as a piece of wood is burned in the fire. The formaldehyde in the composition of the ""compound"" is a great affinity for ammonia and hydrogen sulphide."

Compare the fire endurance of paneled steel stoppings with that of traditional concrete block Stoppings. Background Permanent stoppings or partitions arc used in mines to separate ventilation airways. The ability of stoppings to retain their structural integrity for a minimum length of time under lire conditions and prevent the spread of flame and toxic combustion products to an adjacent airway is critical. The success of miners in reaching safety during a fire depends largely on the presence of uncontaminated airways. Traditionally, permanent stoppings for coal mines are constructed of concrete blocks. Recently, paneled steel stoppings that satisfy many of the requirements demanded of permanent stoppings, such as incombustibility and strength, have been introduced. Their use also introduced concerns such as the ability of a steel stopping to maintain its ventilation control function when exposed to a fire and the potential that the fire could transmit enough heat through the stopping to ignite combustible materials on the unexposed side. To address these concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated the fire endurance of galvanized steel and concrete block stoppings.

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary investigations on the use of an acid-alcohol leaching technique for recovering phosphate values from phosphate matrices. H2S04 and methanol were used as the leaching agents. Starting-matrix particle size and acid-apatite ratio were found to significantly affect the efficiency of phosphate leaching. Phosphate extractions of more than 80 pct were obtained when minus 200-mesh ore was used and the acid-apatite ratio was 8:1 or more. The iron and aluminum oxide impurities (R203) present in the crude acid products were monitored, and R203-P205 ratios are reported. Phosphate extractions in excess of 80 pct also were obtained when phosphatic clay wastes were leached. Typically, leach slurries filtered using test leaf filters ex-hibited filtration rates of 100 lb/(h·ft2) or more.

A laboratory study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the technical feasibility of decomposing hydrous magnesium chlorides by using a steam pyrohydrolysis technique. This procedure consisted of injecting steam into the atmosphere of a decomposition furnace containing samples of hydrous magnesium chloride and determining the rate of hydrolysis by measuring the rate of chloride evolution. The variables investigated were temperature, amount of water vapor in the decomposition atmosphere, and hydration stage of magnesium chloride. The application of steam was shown to accelerate both the rate and completeness of magnesium chloride decomposition reactions. For example, when magnesium chloride hexahydrate is exposed to a furnace temperature of 600' C in an air atmosphere for 20 minutes, the decomposition is 37 percent. Under identical conditions in a steam atmosphere, the decomposition is in excess of 70 percent. The magnesium oxide produced by the steam pyrohydrolysis of magnesium chloride dihydrate at 800° C contained 98 percent magnesium oxide. Based on magnesium oxide composition, this is equivalent to that of burned magnesite produced at temperatures in excess of 1,300° C. To demonstrate the quality of the product on a practical basis, metal reduction tests have shown it to be equivalent to reagent-grade magnesium oxide as a carbothermic reduction feed material.

Mining as an extractive process alone is outdated and unacceptable to today's environmentally concerned public. Multiple land use must be considered as well. Only through effective preplanning can the full potential of reclamation result in a lasting asset for future generations. The coal industry is now recognizing that reclamation of mined lands is part of the mining cycle that must be planned and carried out in a timely and orderly manner. It is also finding that planning reclamation in advance of mining is cheaper and more effective than waiting until mining is completed. The decision to open a strip mine must be based on the results of studies to determine if successful reclamation can be achieved and whether the economic benefits to the company will be justified(1). Information regarding the physical, chemical, hydrologic and biologic systems operative at the site must be under- stood or reclamation will be a failure. Working together, engineers, management and reclamation specialists should design the actual mining and reclamation plan before mining is begun.

1.In 1972 over 595 million tons (51+0 million metric tons) of bituminous coal were mined; 49% of this tonnage was obtained by surface mining methods. Authorities have predicted that the tonnage of surface mined coal will increase in the future, especially since oil and gas resources are becoming limited. 2. Demands for clean air have increased mining activities in the low-sulfur coal deposits in the West. Pollution problems arising from these operations will be considerably different than those found in the East. The deposits are located in arid to semi-arid regions. Coal seams are generally aquifers and are a principle source of fresh water. Therefore mining may result in alteration of groundwater distribution patterns by aquifer disruption. In general, pollution problems associated with western mining are not well characterized. 3.Since any disturbance of the surface will alter the environment in the vicinity of the disturbance, pre-mining planning is a prerequisite to any environmentally successful surface mining operation. If properly carried out, the adverse social, economic, and environmental effects of coal surface mining will be minimized. Certain land areas will be unsuitable for surface mining where: a.Reclamation is not physically or economically possible. b.Mining is incompatible with existing land use plans. c.The proposed mining area is of critical environmental concern. Core drilling is the most satisfactory method of obtaining accurate information for pre-mining planning. 4. Unaccountable strip mining in the past has created problems that are still present today. Contour mining methods that involve the indiscriminate dumping of overburden on the downslope is one of the largest single sources of sediment from strip mining. However, land disturbed by strip mining can be reclaimed. Techniques have been and are being developed by which mining and reclamation are integrated into a single operation. Mountain top removal, head-of-hollow fill, and block cutting are examples in contour surface mining. These methods drastically reduce pollution problems associated with contour stripping.

A chemical method of determining microgram quantities of arsenic in coal was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a semiquantitative spectrographic method of determining arsenic in coal ash. In accordance with a method recommended by the International Organization for Standardization, 1-gram samples of coal are decomposed by wet oxidation with boiling sulfuric acid (H2S04) and nitric acid (HN03) to remove the organic matter. After heating to fumes of SO3 to remove HN03, the arsenic is separated as arsine by the action of zinc in H2S04 solution. The arsine is absorbed in dilute iodine solution in which the arsenic is determined colorimetrically by the molybdenum-blue reaction. Two modifications of the method for obtaining the arsenic in solution, in addition to the wet oxidation method, give satisfactory results. The modifications are (1) furnace ashing with MgO added to the coal, followed by treatment with H2S04, and (2) extraction of arsenic from the coal by dilute HNO3 without ashing. Float-and sink-tests show that arsenic is associated mainly with mineral matter in the three coals examined. High-temperature ashing tests show that very little arsenic is volatilized from coal ash below 1,000° C, but it is virtually all removed from the ash at 1,300° C.

"In connection with the proposed use of Cordeau-Bickford to fire L.O.X. (liquid oxygen explosives) in well drill holes, the question has arisen as to the effect of very low temperatures on (1) the rate of detonation of Cordeau-Bickford; (2) the sensitiveness to detonation of its TNT filling; and (3) the lead covering of Cordeau-Bickford.The Cordeau-Bickford used in this investigation was the standard 6 mm. size, such as is regularly used in blasting, and was manufactured and furnished by the Ensign-Bickford Company, Simsbury, Conn. All pieces tested were taken from rolls, all of which were from the same melted batch of TNT in order that all the pieces tested might be as nearly identical as possible.Different portions of this Cordeau-Bickford were tested plain (not countered), countered, and double countered. The countering and double countering was carried out by the manufacturer prior to shipment.The determination of the temperature at the instant of making a test was accomplished by the use of a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer and copper constantan thermocouples. Each couple was made from No. 28 B & S gage wire with short junctions. One junction was inserted in a hole drilled by a No. 60 drill through one lead wall of the Cordeau-Bickford to approximately the opposite wall, so that this junction was in the center of the TNT filling while the other junction was immersed in ice water. The potentiometer readings in millivolts were converted to °C. from the calibration curve of the thermocouple wire,"

Assist in controlling or extinguishing fires that occur in abandoned mine lands (AML) by providing a compilation of information on past fire control projects, the estimated extent of the current problem, and factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML tires. Conventional fire control methods and their probable effectiveness are evaluated. Background Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard from toxic fumes, deterioration of air quality, and subsidence. Although fires on AML occur in every coal-producing State, the severity of the problem varies, with most underground fires occurring in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. Surface fires are prevalent in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and scaling, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success (see figures 1 and 2). Bureau of Mines Study The Bureau compiled information from a variety of sources and found that the problem of AML fires is a serious one. Such fires can involve a high degree of hazard and can be difficult and costly to control. AML fires usually involve smoldering combustion in outcrops, waste banks, or abandoned mines. Given the nature of these fires, it is unlikely that the extent of the problem or the cost of solutions will decrease in the near future.
