The first year's work of a proposed three-year study of the effects of the exposure of coal mine roof rocks to the mine atmosphere has been completed. The project has been terminated. The goal of the project was to determine if possible the mechanism or mechanisms by which coal mine roof rocks interact with the mine atmosphere and weaken, and coupled with mechanical stresses, ultimately fail. The scope of the study was limited to the effects of environmental factors on the deterioration of the rocks. While mechanical stresses may play an important role in the interaction of environmental factors, stress effects were excluded from the study. In order to study the effects of environment on coal mine roof rocks, samples were obtained from several coal mines in the western states. The rocks forming the roofs of most of the mines visited were shales of varying composition. These shales were subjected to numerous tests to determine how the rocks changed with time after exposure. In addition, the identity of the minerals present in the shales was determined by x-ray diffraction analysis and by thermal analysis as well as by optical microscopy

Hydraulic backfill consisting of siliceous mill tailings was successfully dewatered and consolidated by electrokinetics in a field test conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. A stope at the 2,000-foot level was filled in such a way that slimes and coarse sand were retained in the scope. Following settlement of solids and decant of surface water, direct current applied between buried electrodes created a firm, dense material in approximately 3 hours. This rapid densification of fine-grained material demonstrated the utility of this method and suggests other applications, particularly in the control of slime deposits that cause serious problems in many deep mines.

Because of the' situation in Europe during the summer of 1939, with the possibility of war and consequent curtailment or loss of supplies of tin to the United States, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of domestic tin resources. This was permitted by the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, which authorized investigation of possible domestic resources of strategic minerals necessary in a national emergency. The minerals selected were in short supply, and the United States depended almost entirely on imports to meet normal requirements. The Black Hills of South Dakota were selected for investigation as one possible source of tin because of the occurrence of the mineral there has been known since 1876, although production had never been important. The Tinton area, in the northern part of the Hills, had received the most attention and contained some minor indicated and inferred tin deposits.

"INTRODUCTION Scheelite occurring in tactite at the Black Rock tungsten mine, near Benton in Mono County, Calif., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey as part of their search for additional sources of supply of strategic minerals authorized under the Strategic Materials Act. 3/4/The work accomplished by the Bureau, and the assays of samples taken are described in this manuscript. The ore found aided materially in prolonging the operating life of the mine during the recent national emergency, supplying much-needed tungsten for war use. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigations of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more efficient utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Nines has received many inquiries on the subject of assaying oil-shales, both from individuals who desire to wake their own assay while in the field, and also from Commercial assayers and investigators. The present paper describes the assay retort used by the Bureau of Mines. in the research work on oil-shales now in progress at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau at Salt Lake City, Utah, and at the Colorado cooperative oil-shale laboratory, Boulder, Colorado. This retort, which was developed through experimentation in the bureau's laboratories, has been found to be convenient in use and. capable of yielding reproducible results. M. J. Gavin, Oil-Shale Technologist, gave valuable assistance in preparing the subject matter for publication and made many helpful suggestions during the experiments made by the writer in the course of the development of the assay retort. L. A. Anderson, research "fellow" University of Utah, assisted in the preliminary development of the assay retort.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the hardware system and software package for the semiautomatic acquisition and automatic processing of high-resolution mass spectrographic plates. The semiautomatic data acquisition allows a tenfold saving of time compared with manual data acquisition. Automatic processing of the high-resolution data to yield exact masses, intensity, and the corresponding empirical formulas is accomplished by efficient programming on a small, inexpensive, programmable calculator system.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 2 of the Marquette Range, Michigan is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim; districts of the United States. The publication, of this information should be of interest to the industry at large and the exchange of ideas thereby made possible should be of economic value to operators in all harts of the country. The mining methods described in this paper are those used in a large mine producing hard specular ore on the Marquette Range in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Although the conditions of mining are unique in this district, they are similar to those in many other districts, and information in regard to the methods used and the results obtained should be of interest. The methods now used are an outgrowth of those of former years which have been adapted to conform with improvements in mechanical appliances, changes in the wage scale and labor supply, and the' selling price of the product. The mine is situated' at Ishpeming, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, 16 miles west of Marquette, its shipping port on Lake Superior.

"Diesel exhaust soots were assayed in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay system using TA 98, the soots being applied as the following preparations: dispersion in dipaimitoyl glycerophosphoryl choline (DPL), dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPP!), and dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) in physiological saline, and in physiological saline without added surfactant. The extracts of soots by dichloromethane / dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/BHSO) were also assayed. Studies were performed both with and without :IQ microsomal activation of the soot preparations. The DPP! and DPPA surfactants were chosen as phospholiridz with two palmitic acid moieties esterified to a glycerol as is the case with DPL, but with hydrophilic groups having different electrophilic characters. The soots, without S9 activation, showed mutegenic activity when extracted in the conventional procedure with DCM/DMSO. The mutagenic activity of soots dispersed in DPL was quantitatively comparable to, and in some cases greater than, the activity expressed by an equal mass of soot extracted by DCM/DMSO. Soots in other surfactantpreparations, DPP! and DPPA, also expressed positive mutagenic activity. Praincubation with S9 microsomal enzyme fraction reduced the activity of solvent extracted soots, and greatly diminished the activity of DPL dispersed soots. Initial sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assays using the Chinese hamster V79 cell line indicated DPL dispersed soot also can cause SCR in mammalian cells. Results thus far suggest that surfactant suspended or ""solubilized"" respirable soot particles could provide a mechanism for transport and expression of mutagens in the lung."

This study is one of a number conducted to determine the concentration of dust in the air during the complete cycle of operation in wet drilling information as to various factors connected with drilling in mining operations is considered to be of definite value in the control and prevention of air dustiness, and it is particularly desirable to ascertain What features of present-day wet-drilling operations in mine work contribute to dust disease and to remedy deficiencies when they are found. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A testing alit through rock strata is being developed by the Mining Division of the United States bureau of Mines at Mount Weather, Va., and the tests discussed in this report were conducted there. This experimental alit in rock, constitutes a typo of laboratory where mine conditions can be closely simulated and where many of the variables likely to occur in an actual mine can be eliminated or at least controlled with reasonable effort, thus affording maximum opportunities to secure fundamental data uncomplicated by extraneous conditions. Not long after electrically driven equipment was introduced into coal mines it became apparent that the spark-producing parts, such as controllers and motors, required safeguards to prevent the ignition of mine gas that might come into their vicinity. Many of the early designs attempted to provide protective enclosures having ventila¬tion and relief for pressures if ignition should occur within. The principal feature of the Davy safety lamp, namely, the wire gauze, was employed widely for this purpose. Other devices were developed to reduce the temperature of products of combustion escaping through the protected openings to a value below that which would cause ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres. Although many such devices performed their intended function satisfactorily under laboratory conditions they were not so satisfac¬tory when subjected to the rigorous conditions encountered under¬ground. Corrosion, mishandling, and accumulations of grease and dirt reduced or destroyed their protective qualities after a period of service in the mines. In the United States this has led to abandon¬ment of special devices in favor of what is called " total enclosure " which means that no regular provision is made for ventilation and release of pressure but rather that the housings or enclosures are built strong enough to withstand the explosion pressures without rupture. As a further protection the joints usually are made of broad, closely fitting surfaces. It is impractical to make such joints absolutely gastight in ordinary machine practice when provision must be made for partial or complete disassembly to facilitate ad¬justments and repairs. Therefore, when an explosion occurs within such enclosures flames may escape through the joints. If the latter are broad enough and not separated too widely, however, the flames will be cooled by contact with the metal surfaces (flanges) of the joints, by rapid expansion, or by both cooling and expansion, with the result that an explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure will not be ignited. The Bureau of Mines investigated a series of Fe-Al-Mo alloys strengthened by ZrC (zirconium carbide) precipitates as chromium-free substitutes for stainless steels. Melting and fabrication methods were devised, and the effects of minor additions of columbium (niobium) and cerium on the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance were determined. Zirconium carbides could not be con-trolled reliably to produce fine precipitate dispersions. A more reliable carbide strengthening mechanism is required if the high-temperature strengths of types 304 and 316 stainless steels are to be duplicated. Workability and oxidation resistance of the alloy series were excellent.

The U.S. underground coal miner faces a continuing hazard from the fall of roof. At the root of many injuries and fatalities are weak or defective roof strata. Throughout mining history, millions of miles of entry have provided exposure of every conceivable geologic roof hazard. This report describes the geologic origin, association, and potential danger from the most common hazards. Discussions of weak rock include drawrock, rider coals, head coal, stackrock, and stream valley effects. Discontinuities, or roof defects, are described including, clay veins, slickensides, joints, and paleochannels. A number of examples from U.S. coalfields are used to document geologic structure and associated hazards. Roof fall analysis is a methodology used by NIOSH for hazard recognition and prevention; its application and benefit to the industry are discussed.

Based on earlier tests that showed steel to be much more likely to cause frictional ignition than tungsten carbide, the Bureau of Mines redesigned coal-cutting bits to reduce the hazard of face ignitions. Two bit designs--a mushroom-shaped bit with a conical shank and a dove-tail bit with a rectangular shank--are described, as well as bit wear tests conducted in the laboratory and in an operating coal mine. In laboratory tests, for 1/8-, 1/4-, and 1/2-in-deep cuts and cutting speeds of 280, 500, and 660 ft/min, the mushroom bit had significantly longer tip wear life than the conventional bit; the dovetail bit was also superior to the conventional bit. Results of in-mine tests on the mushroom bit agree well with laboratory results. In-mine tests of the dovetail bit are underway.

"Production of explosives for industrial use in,the United States during 1934 continued the upward trend begun in 1933 from the low-level output of 1932, and the output in 1934 was only slightly less than in 1931.Reports to the United Stated Bureau of Mines from companies engaged in the manufacture of industrial explosives showed that the quantity of explosives manufactured in the United States and sold during 1934 for use within the various States was 314,767,922 pounds - 23 percent more than in 1931.Production during 1934 included 39,207,845 pounds of permissible explosives 5 206,625,027 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and,68,935,050 pounds of black blasting powder of which 37,192,700 pounds were in granular form and 31,742,350 pounds in pellet form. These figures represent an increase over 1933 of 15.6 percent for permissible explosives, 30.9 percent for other high explosive, and 7.4 percent for black powder.Coal-mining operations were the chief consumers of permissible explosives; 99 percent of the total output in 1934 was used, in coal mines. The proportion used by bituminous mines was 59 percent and by anthracite mines 40 percent. Coal mining was likewise the principal consumer of black blasting powder, taking 88 percent of the total sales during 1934; of this proportion, bituminous mines received 78 percent and anthracite mines between 9 and 10 percent. Consumers of high explosives other than permissibles were more varied; the reports showed that 11 percent of the total quantity sold was for coal mining, 22 percent for metal mining, 17 percent for quarrying and nonmetallic-mineral mining, 46 percent for railway and other construction work, and 4 percent for all other purposes."

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

This is the final report on a research program to develop a pilot plant gasifier for slagging gasification of lignite at high pressures and to obtain process data under various operating conditions. An operable pilot plant was developed, and the test results show that lignite is well suited for the process. Tests were run at pressures from 80 to 400 psig, and the results indicated that pressure had little effect on gas composition or the material requirements per unit gas produced. Gas production rates as high as 26,000 scfh/sq ft of reactor area were obtained at 300 psig, but limitations on auxiliary equipment prevented full-capacity operation at 400 prig. In several tests lignite having a 37-percent moisture content and 2,500° F ash-fusion temperature was successfully gasified. Refractory materials were found to have a short life in contact with high-temperature slag, and a water-cooled taphole was developed. Exploratory tests with coking coal were unsuccessful.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These and microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproductions of all declassified reports . A Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports is issued weekly by the Department of Commerce , Office of the Publication Board , and is sold by the Superintendent of Documents , Government Printing Office , Washington 25 , D. The Bureau of Mines is doing research and development work on removing acid-gas impurities from synthesis gas made directly from coal. Since conventional gas scrubbers, packed towers and bubble-cap columns, are expensive to construct and difficult to operate with viscous solutions, one aspect of the work was developing a compact, agitated, gas-liquid contactor for use with concentrated absorbents. The efficacy of the agitated contactor for absorbing carbon dioxide in diethanolamine increased with increasing solution rate, turbine speed, diethanolamine concentration, and carbon dioxide concentration in feed gas, and with decreasing liquid-gas ratio. It was unaffected by pressure between 200 and 300 p.s.i.g. and little affected by temperature between 115 and 190° F.

Mineral resources in the Silver Creek study area of the Nez Perce National Forest. Idaho, were investigated during the summer Of 1989. The study area includes the 36,100-acre Silver Creek-Pilot Knob RARE II area (No. 1-849) on the north side of the South Fork Clearwater River, about 11 miles west of Elk City, 10. Mines in and near the study area in the Tenmile and Newsome mining districts produced about 100.000 02 of gold, mostly from placers. Gold production had an historic value estimated at 52 million, equivalent to nearly $40 million at today's prices. Lode mines produced about 19,000 oz of gold, along with smaller amounts of silver, copper, lead, and zinc. Of 34 mines and prospects examined, ten lode properties are considered to be significant by virtue of their past development or production and the presence of possibly ore-grade mineralization. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area; however, samples that contained gold and anomalous arsenic delineate a three-mile-long area from the Sentinel mine, north to the Blue Quartz prospect where exploration might disclose resources. One mining company is conducting geophysical studies and drilling within the delineated area. In addition, six placer sites may contain enough gold to be of possible interest for future exploration and development.
