Since the signature hole method principle has been described in the 80's, there has always been a lot of controversy about it. The theory is easy to understand but when it comes to apply it for predicting vibration level, optimizing timing to reduce PPV or shifting frequencies, it’s not always working as expected. Simulations show waveforms that don't make any sense or predictions that are far away from actual results.

Recent trends in blasting engineering and its related fields, at the level of professional academia, have tended to exclude detailed discussion and examination of the formative experiences of the engineering student. In particular, the extra-curricular aspects of the undergraduate program in engineering—focused, in this case, on the summer job—will be shown to contain a wealth of heretofore underappreciated knowledge in the field. In Surveying the Damage: Post Traumatic Stress and Pre-Blast Surveys, I intend to outline and examine some of the more unusual experiences afforded me by my work as a preblast surveyor in the summer of 2007. In this capacity, I was required to make a visual note of existing conditions of surrounding residential and commercial structures within 100 m (328 ft) of two separate blasting sites in central-east Ontario. In the interest of both convenience and specificity, I have attempted to organize the paper as a crossdiscipline survey of the field according to the conference’s list of suggested topics. In the paper’s first section, I will discuss the topic of Environmental Improvement and Remediation by using a case study in which not one, but two dead cats were found during the course of a routine pre-blast survey. The second section will undertake a discussion of on-site blaster gossip as an entry point into a wider discussion of Workplace Communications Management. In the paper’s final section, I will detail an early morning encounter with a 300 lb, stark-naked trailer park inhabitant as a cross-sectional analysis of the topics of Drilling in Hostile Environments, Vibration and Seismology (Sizemology?), Ethics in Blasting, Crisis Management, Risk Assessment and Public Relations. It is my hope that this paper will begin to open up a critical space for discussion of the formative experiences of engineering students during the undergraduate university program in terms of their far-reaching effects on later performance within the industry.

Drilling through unconsolidated material I need to drill blastholes through a mix of consolidated and unconsolidated material. This material is hung up in an underground ore pass. The total length of the holes would be approximately 200 feet. We have attempted to drill through the material with conventional ITH drilling, but were unsuccessful. Does anyone have a suggestion? I am more than willing to bring in a contractor to do the job, if they have solid experience with this type of problem.

At the time of my visit to the Peoples Republic of China I was employed by the E.I. DuPont Company as a Technical Specialist in the Explosives Department. The purpose of my visit was to observe the use of explosives in mining and tunneling in a coal field 500 miles south of Peking near Hsu Chou in Kiang Su Province. The DuPont Company was preparing a proposal for the sale of a Tovex water gel plant to the Chinese Government.

The Paseo Bridge was located at the I-29/I-35/US-71 Missouri River Highway Crossing. It was built between 1952 and 1954 by Massman Construction Company. The 1,232 foot long, self-anchored suspension bridge was the longest of its type when built. On Jan. 22, 2003, a connector pin designed to allow the bridge to expand and contract during temperature cycles seized and caused a portion of the bridge deck to raise up and block traffic. This marked the beginning of the end for the old Paseo Bridge.

The second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009 brought up important anniversaries. My old passport from Czechoslovakia has a stamp with date 10-10-1968 at 10:00 AM, the exact time I crossed the border between the former Czechoslovak Republic and Austria. This date has an important meaning because I could not come back to my country for the next 21 years. The 40th anniversary of Soviet led invasion, which took place on the 21st of August 2008, revealed some unknown and long time kept secret news.

Drilling and blasting is a clearly delineated work process, which has well defined inputs and outputs. Drilling and blasting is also a process with a number of steps each of which has measurable outcomes. Drilling and blasting is ideally suited to the application of Total Quality Management principles. Most drilling and blasting information is generally poorly managed with disjointed and unrelated Information Technology systems managing parts drilling and blasting data. Data is often moved from on system to another, sometimes manually. In the field, drilling and blasting is still very much a paper based system and which has not generally benefited from some of the recent hardware and software technology advancements now “on the shelf”. Data collected on paper rarely is transcribed back into an electronic system for further analysis. It is often difficult to collate or review historic drilling and blasting data. This paper will present a definition of Total Quality Management and demonstrate how it can be applied to the drilling and blasting work process. Total Quality Management defines the mechanisms for the application of continuous improvement to drilling and blasting. Continuous improvement will provide opportunities to modify drilling and blasting work process outcomes and generate real cost benefits within the overall mining process. A complete drilling and blasting management system frame work, called DBS, is presented in this paper. DBS provides all the components necessary to implement a full drilling and blasting Total Quality Management solution. Also highlighted will be appropriate “off the shelf” technology that can be applied to replace current paper based systems and provide the means to connect with other mine data systems. Various examples will be discussed which will demonstrate potential benefits of applying a structured Total Quality Management approach to a drilling and blasting work process.

Large scale open pit mining and quarrying operations dictate safe and reliable pit wall stability. The current approach of employing the particle velocity-scaled charge distance approach to estimate and minimize damage to residential structures is considered inadequate to protect rock slopes. This study utilizes close-in blasting vibration data as input to an advanced 2D numerical code to study its applicability to serve as a predictive tool in terms of blast-induced rock slope failure. Two tri-axial accelerometer stations, consisting of high-frequency and high-amplitude (20 kHz, 100g) sensors, located within ~100m of the blast, but at two different bench levels, were used to monitor production blasts in a limestone quarry. The production blast consisted of double-decked explosive loads in 125 mm (5 in) diameter holes, with an inter-deck delay of 42 ms, and each deck consisting of 130 kg (285 lb) of emulsion explosive. The blasting vibration data obtained at the two bench levels were critically analyzed, and the vibration results served as input to the numerical model consisting of a single rock block with a 45 degree persistent joint plane but with specified strength properties, significantly different from that of the intact rock. The model was able to characterise progressive accumulation of damage in the form of microcracks along the joint surface as a function of the relatively low vibration load from successive explosive decks. The results showed that such a numerical model can serve as a very good diagnostic and predictive tool, when backed up by careful vibration monitoring and further supported by detailed slope monitoring.

Considering rock fragmentation by explosive as the ultimate goal in mines and quarries, vibrations are definitely one of the main drawbacks faced by the Industry. If we can accurately predict vibrations level and frequencies, taking into account the whole set of the involved parameters, this will bring a major benefit to each of us, in our daily production process optimization effort. The model presented in this paper answers to this need thanks to a "holistic" approach of the vibration mechanism. By holistic, we mean that we approach the vibration effect (wave propagation) as a whole, by understanding all of the mechanisms that contributes to the process and comprehending how they are connected.

Does anyone have any definitive information on vibration limits for damage to well casings near blasting? Also, are people using self-imposed limits when approaching cased wells? I can only tell you what I have personally done with success. Often in new construction in hard rock, the well is drilled before the foundation is excavated and before the ditch for the water line is excavated. These both require drilling and blasting. Under these circumstances when blasting for the ditch for the waterline we will drill right up to within 10 inches (not feet) of the well casing. We drill line holes the width of the ditch, then about a foot from this, another row of trim holes then as we move away from the casing holes for 1 1/4 inch stick powder for about three rows then as we get further still, we can load with ANFO. I do not have vibration data for this but my experience has been that as long as you are not displacing the material into the casing that no damage is done. These typically are steel casings for residential water service.

When investigating citizen complaints about blast vibration and airblast, it is important to be able to establish the spatial relationships between blasts, blasting seismographs monitoring the events, and complainant structures to assess any directional impacts. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) routinely uses hand-held GPS receivers to document these relationships. The waypoint (structures and seismograph monitoring locations) and tracking (blasting and permit areas) features are used to map a site. These data are imported into the software for editing and conversion to GPS Exchange (.gpx) format.

RBH Note: The following items are a deviation from the usual content of these articles, but I thought they were kind of interesting from an historical point of view (other than just explosives-history historical.) The interesting things to me are the military-related products, keeping in mind that World War I didn’t start until August, 1914, and then it was kind of an accident of political alliances gone awry. Obviously companies in Germany saw it coming. Of course, all the ads also included dynamite and safety explosives for mining and tunneling as well as the military items.

Fracture mechanics (Atkinson 1987, Broek 1988, Rossmanith 1978-2002, 1983, 1997, Kanninen & Popelar 1985) and wave propagation (Graf 1975, Rinehart 1975) form the main ingredients in the new electronic detonator based blasting technology. The full potential of using short delay initiation timing in bench and underground blasting can only be exploited if the underlying physical processes are properly understood. From a structural geology point of view, in many open pit mine operations, blasting is performed in incompetent and/or loose rock. Under such conditions the stress waves produced by blasting very quickly dissipate in the rock mass and often their energy cannot effectively be put to work. This contribution shows the effect of open and closed joints – and to some degree also faulting – on the blast wave field and shows the influence of structural geology on the blasting result. A simple engineering method which combines wave propagation and impact mechanics is developed in order to assist the non-scientifically trained blaster in understanding blasting in blocky rock formations. Extensive use will be made of the so-called Lagrange diagram which was introduced in detail in the author’s previous lecture at ISEE 2003 (Rossmanith 2003). This presentation can be considered a continuation of the 2003 presentation.

BLASPA is the name for a computer code which can assist in the rapid optimisation of blasting procedures in an open-pit mine. BLASPA is based on a mathematical model of the blasting process, a model which has been developing since 1963 as a result of blasting research carried out at the College Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean under sponsorship of the Defence Research Board, and in co-operation with the mining and explosives industry. The model presently includes the following aspects: (1) Geometry, i.e. spacing, burden, bench height, collar, sub-grade drilling; (2) Explosives, i.e. types and grades of explosives, distribution into bottom and top load or decking, size of hole and coupling; (3) Hookup, i.e. parallel or angled firing, delays, location of primers. Computer costs are very small, by comparison with purely spherical AEC codes, so that any number of simulations can be carried out very efficiently. The system has already been used to carry out thousands of simulations for over 40 mines in Canada and abroad. It will be explained how such simulations become a useful guide for a mine's blasting engineer who wishes to optimize his blasting and drilling costs.

Kelly bar drilling and blasting is unique to Florida, the' Bahamas and other marine limestone areas in the world where blast holes are required but will not remain open for the loading of explosives. This type of rock formation usually yields 1.5 tons of recoverable rock compared to 2.2 tons per cubic yard for competent limestone. The loss of .7 tons per cubic yard is due to voids and sand in the formation. These deposits all contain water to the top of the blast holes which are collared only a few ft. above the ground water level. The working pit is a water filled lake which is excavated from the bank by draglines. These drills have been used in Florida for many years to depths of 65 ft or less.

The 2003-2004 expansion of a Duluth medical center required rock blasting adjacent to the existing structures, a Mn/DOT retaining wall and other urban structures. This case history describes the methods of a blast damage assessment, based on blast parameters, excavation locations, and critical vibration receptors (including surgical suites, a linear accelerator and a major retaining wall). The assessment concluded that blast vibrations could be controlled, by limiting charge weight, to eliminate impact at the critical receptors. Prior to construction, we conducted preconstruction surveys on structures susceptible to vibration damage. During construction, we reviewed submittals, observed test blasts, reviewed blasting logs and monitored blasting vibrations. Up to 13 seismographs were used simultaneously. Close coordination with medical center operations personnel was necessary to prevent impacts to critical medical procedures. Measured vibrations were clustered around the predicted values, and attenuated at the predicted rate. High-frequency blast induced ground vibrations induced low-frequency vibration of an adjacent MnDOT retaining wall. Medical center structures were observed to significantly attenuate the ground-borne vibrations. This paper was first published in the Proceedings of the 56th Annual Geotechnical Engineering Conference, 2008, at the University of Minnesota.

Many technical challenges were encountered while conducting near-field construction blasting between the critical intersection of Interstate 10 and multiple active railroad tracks in El Paso, Texas, for the Loop 375 Border West Expressway Project. Blasting was utilized for the removal of an andesite bedrock ridge in preparation for the construction of a new elevated super structure to be suspended over the existing railroad tracks. There was concern that the excessive vibrations and/or permanent rock deformation produced from the blasting within near proximity (20 feet, or 6.09 meters) of the railroad tracks would induce excessive stress and foul the tracks by shifting the alignment. This could result in a major loss of scheduling control between the two major railroad companies that operate in this area. Velocity of Detonation (VOD) is the most commonly used method to determine explosive performance as VOD is a function of the confinement (ground conditions) density and composition of the explosive. Techniques used to measure VOD include resistance wire, time domain reflectometry, simple start stop and fibre optic methods. All these approaches require a cable of some sort to be inserted into each blast hole being monitored and the holes to be fired in a specific sequence. It is time consuming and fairly technical to position the cables correctly to gather the data from each hole. It slows down the hole loading process and increases the number of people on a bench at that time. The equipment and cable limits the measurements to a few holes, typically 5 or less, that are in close proximity. These measurements can generate useful information about the monitored holes but does not provide a full picture of how the explosive is performing across the whole blast and whether any change in performance is noted with changing ground conditions or confinement.

With an increasing pressure to find efficiencies in the mining industry, operations are looking for continuous improvement tools to validate blasting procedures, a crucial and often overlooked area of the process. Using case studies completed at both small and large-scale mining operations, this technical paper proposes a practical methodology for pattern expansion studies, taking into account terrain parameters, rock quality and explosive strength. This technical paper will use a series of tools geared towards an economical continuous improvement procedure, using UAV particle size analysis to optimize blasting based on “generalized reduced gradient” for non-linear problems, with cost savings being the main objective. For the validation of this methodology, one scenario was created based on the operation’s budget: an economical continuous improvement plan that relied on manual data collection methods in order to baseline and optimize procedures.
