"Simulation methods have a big potential in the studies and analyses of complex technological processes and schemes. The simulation method used jointly with flow diagrams and related transmittance models allows describing and analysing dynamic characteristics.The paper presents results of simulation analysis of dynamic characteristics of ore dressing system, called closed circuit mill-classifier-mill. Such systems are widely used in ore processing plants. The system was analysed as a typical system with material feedback, to establish its dynamic characteristics.Flow diagram conforming to the technological scheme is presented in a figure. Transmittances shown in the scheme are defined as follows:GMP - transmittance of rod mill,GP, KZ, GW, KZ - transmittances of overflow and underflow streams of spiral classifier, respectively,GMK - transmittance of ball mill,GT - transmittance of underflow stream from classifier to ball mill,GU, MP, GU, MK - fraction transmittance of outflow streams of rod and ball mill, respectively, summed up at classifier input.Taking into account, in base of carried out analysis the transmittance forms of individual system elements. The calculations are based on numeral forms of transmittances of individual blocks, defined through industrial experimentation.Step input function to rod mill was assumed to be a step of mass ore flow rate to the mill. Responses are defined as product densities.This figure demonstrates the way of input signal transmission by consecutive elements of the system and shape of these elements' responses. It can be noticed that step signal undergoes gradual change from the stream of the first order to those of higher and higher orders as a distance from process leading edge increases. Simultaneously, the impulse signal is subject to systematic smoothing and decay. From the technological point of view, the most important is response stream in point 5 (on the above figure) that characterises classifier overflow, which is a final product of this system."

"Over the last few years, the copper mining industry has been facing a changing scenario with respect to both the market and society which has resulted in taking a closer look at the way in which mining is being done. The cycle of high metal commodity prices of the last decade left the industry with high costs. Together with increased environmental and social requirements, a decrease in ore body quality, scarcity of resources such as human capital, water and energy, has resulted in an ever-increasing challenge to make a profit out of new ore bodies but also to maintain the current operations in the longer term competitive. The major challenge is to create value for all stakeholders, exploiting ore bodies that nowadays are not considered economically attractive, which applies to both new ore bodies and existing operations, but in a sustainable way. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to approach the mining business differently in five main areas: (1) operational efficiency through better use of installed equipment and skilled labor force; (2) efficient use of energy; using opportunities for alternative energy sources and efficient design; (3) efficient use of water; diminishing losses and use of seawater as an alternative source; (4) minimizing environmental impact by eliminating effluents and controlling dust emission; and (5) a more closer, proactive and collaborative relationship with the communities allowing them to be an active player in the solution to assure a sustainable business in the long term. This presentation will show how Antofagasta Minerals is facing these challenges with a long term strategy that includes all of the above mentioned aspects and that is allowing the company to exploit its mineral properties in an efficient and successful way."

"The problems related to waste dumping increased with the growth and development of large cities. In the U.K., more than 50% of landfill waste comes from construction use and the U.S. alone produces around 200 to 300 million tons of CDW annually. The exhaustion of natural sand deposits close to large urban centres stimulates the recycling of construction and demolition waste for the production of recycled aggregates as a construction material. This paper presents a flowchart for the production of recycled sand with low porosity and regular shape by the selective removal of the cement paste attached to recycled aggregates. The products characterization was carried out by the determination of the particle size and shape distribution, chemical and mineralogical composition, heavy liquid mineral separation and quantification of all present phases using a scanning electron microscopy with automated image analysis (SEM-MLA). The comminution of CDW by vertical shaft impact crusher made possible the production of a lower porosity recycled sand. The heavy liquid mineral separation showed that the proportion of low porous phases (d>2.5 g/cm3) is very high, exceeding 70% of the weight, encouraging further mineral processing separation to obtain a fine recycled aggregate with less cement paste content. The mineralogical characterization by XRD and SEM indicates that the main phases are tectosilicates, phyllosilicates and calcite which one can be attributed to both calcareous aggregate and cement paste. The precise quantification of cement paste and calcite/dolomite alone is just possible by automated image analysis. The characterization results demonstrated that proportion of phases with no cement paste attached increases progressively in denser products. The results of heavy liquid separations and image analysis are comparable and automated image analysis can be used for the characterization of phase content and their main associations."

"Covellite is one of the most important copper sulfide minerals. Its behavior during the anodic polarization, as well as its rest potential in various solutions are of importance for flotation processes and also define the mechanism of electrochemical extraction of copper from sulfide minerals.Measurements of the rest potential have been performed in water solutions in presence of different cations and anions. The existence of the Nernst type dependence of the rest potential on the activity of some of the investigated ions was established. The biggest influence on the rest potential of covellite exhibits the change of activities of the ions forming the crystal lattice of investigated mineral, i.e. Cu(II) and S(II). The dependence of the rest potential of covellite on logarithm of Cu(II) activity has a shape of a strait line with a positive slope of 60 mV, while when concentration of S(II) anions increases ten times, the rest potential of covellite decreases about 120 mV. The first dependence was established in acid medium, while the second was registered in alkali one.Different electrochemical techniques have been used for the investigation of the behavior of covellite during anodic polarization. In the basis of all these measurements is a three electrode system consisted of: 1) working electrode made of the sample of natural covellite from the Bor mine (Eastern Serbia, Yugoslavia); 2) reference electrode (saturated calomel electrode) and 3) counter electrode (flat platinum). Electrolyte solutions used in these investigations are of the same kind as those used in the rest potential measurements. Sulfate and chloride solutions, as well as the mixed sulfate/chloride solutions, are the most perspective from the application point of view.Cyclic voltammetry has been the first used method that confirmed the formation of passive layer on the electrode surface during anodic polarization. Elementary data about the reaction mechanism have been obtained too. More detailed data needed for more precise conclusions about the mechanism and rate of the anodic process on covellite have been obtained by galvanostatic method. It was established that the essential difference exists between the reaction mechanism in sulfate and chloride solutions. Also, the difference is exhibited in the nature of reaction product directly connected with the passivation of the electrode surface. Chronopotentiometric investigations have been performed in sulfate, nitrate, chloride perchlorate and mixed sulfate/chloride solutions applying different current densities. The shape of obtained curves indicate if there was a surface passivation and how intensive it was."

"Dispersed phase interactions involving bubbles and particles in the turbulent environment play a significant role in the flotation process. The conventional collision models only account for the deterministic rather than the stochastic behavior of turbulenct flow. What the bubble-particle collisions would be like remains an open problem due to the complex nature of turbulent flow. To address this research question, the present study aims to quantify the bubble-particle collision efficiency incorporating turbulence using the computational method. Multiple solid particles were released to interact with a single stationary rigid bubble (non-deformable interface). Effect of particles Stokes number, turbulent intensity (TI) and integral length scale on the bubble-particle collision efficiency (Pc) was examined. Large Eddy Simulation method (LES) was used to compute the continuous phase. Fluctuating velocity required at the inlet boundary condition was derived from Gaussian energy spectrum to generate the upstream turbulence. Discrete Phase Model (DPM) is used to simulate particle trajectory. The characteristics of turbulent flow were analyzed through Energy spectrum and energy dissipation rate. The critical initial releasing radius of the annulus, where Pc equals zero, reaches up to 1.5(Rb+Rp) under high turbulent intensity (TI) 20.48% compared to 0.23(Rb+Rp) calculated from the traditional Pc model. Pc decreases as the distance of initial releasing annulus between bubble centre increases. Pc increases as particle Stokes number increase up to 0.66. The collision efficiency for particles of St less than 0.38 is higher under TI 11.78% compared to TI 4%.INTRODUCTION To increase mineral recovery, interactions between bubbles and particles are essential. All flotation devices achieve it through introducing some level of turbulence into the system by increasing specific energy dissipation rate. Figure 1 shows three different flotation equipment, traditional floatation cell, Concorde cell and cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column (FCSMC), with different turbulence generation mechanisms – impeller, down-flow liquid jet and pump recirculation, respectively."

The objective of this study was to achieve Zn activation control in an industrial Cu flotation circuit treating a complex Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag sulphide ore at the LaRonde Division of Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited (Québec, Canada). In order to provide process relevant results, a laboratory testing methodology was developed to duplicate plant operational parameters. The action mechanisms of ZnSO4, TETA (triethylenetetramine) and NaHSO3used as depressants in order to limit ZnS activation were examined. Laboratory flotation tests with and without Cu2+ions (the ions responsible for ZnSactivation)were performed. All depressants showed equal or better flotation performance relative to baseline tests. For example, in the presence of Cu2+, the Zn recovery reduced from 32.2% to 17.5% in the copper rougher concentrate after adding ZnSO4(with a dosage of 50 g/t). TOF-SIMS analyses confirmed the relative decrease in surface Cu in the samples treated with ZnSO4and TETA. For the case with TETA, this indirectlyindicates the formation of a copper TETA complex in solution, thereby reducing available Cu for transfer. The TOF-SIMS and XPS data indicate that the addition of ZnSO4and NaHSO3resulted in an increase in surface metal hydroxides and SO3 on ZnS grains inhibiting both Cu and collector attachment.ZnSO4 was subsequently tested with success in the LaRonde concentrator. The addition of 40 g/t ZnSO4 at the conditioning (or cleaning) stage led to a 2% reduction in Zn content in the Cu and PM concentrate. Recently, improvements towards the control of copper sulfate addition in the downstream Zn flotation circuit resulted in the reduction of Cu2+ in process water. As this ?cleaner? water is recycled for Cu and PM flotation, the addition of ZnSO4 is now used only as required.

"The aim of this study is to solve the problem of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate using sodium hydroxide in the presence of phosphate by an autoclaving process, which is one of main development techniques for tungsten recovery. To understand the applicability and leaching performance of tungsten leaching from scheelite concentrate, the main work is to investigate the effects of leaching parameters such as initial concentrations of NaOH and Na3PO4, reaction temperature, stirring speed, liquid-to-solid ratio and reaction time on WO3 dissolution rate to obtain the optimal leaching conditions. The chemical composition and phase composition of the samples were evaluated by means of XRF and XRD. The content of WO3 in the leaching residue obtained via washing, filtering and drying was analyzed by thiocyanate spectrometric method. The optimal leaching conditions were found to be NaOH concentration of 6.76 mol·L-1, Na3PO4 concentration of 1.35 mol·L-1, reaction temperature of 180°C, stirring speed of 400 rpm, liquid-to-solid ratio of 2.0 and reaction time of 90 min. The results showed that tungsten leaching rate of 99.20% was reached under the optimal conditions. The technology exhibited superior leaching performance, which not only reduced the consumption of sodium hydroxide but also greatly decreased reaction time in comparison to a conventional autoclaving process. INTRODUCTION Tungsten is an important strategic metal, which is widely utilized in a variety of industries due to its high melting point, superior mechanical properties and heat-resistant performance [1-3]. The chief raw materials for the production of tungsten in nature are wolframite and scheelite [4, 5]. Among them, approximately two-thirds of the tungsten reserves contain scheelite deposits in the world [6, 7]. With the progressive exhaustion of high-quality wolframite resources, scheelite has become a predominant primary resource for the production of tungsten [8, 9]."

Metso Mining and Construction Technology is one of the world leading suppliers of equipment and knowhow for aggregate and mining industry. The processing capacity, ease of use, and reliability are featuring Metso?s state-of-the-art cone crushers. Crushing is a complicated process affected by numerous parameters. The optimized crusher kinematics is one of the key factors for high performance. To fine tune the crusher kinematics and crushing chambers one needs to know how different parameters affect. The main cone crusher parameters are head angle and diameter, gyration point, shaft speed, eccentricity, stroke length, and inclination and design of crushing cavity. Selecting the correct combination of these parameters is a multi task optimization challenge. In practical life there are more factors to achieve satisfactory performance, like crushing chamber wear and profile management keeping the performance constant over the whole wear life, control of crusher frame loads, ability to handle disturbances in feed material etc. The extensive research work has lead to a solution that enables the highest possible material density in the crushing chamber. This design provides maximum reduction of processed material and thus increased share of 0/10 mm product. High density in the cavity offers further benefits, such as high throughput capacity, less material contact with wear parts and even load on crusher frame and bearings. The challenge that an equipment supplier involved with high density crushing is how to design a robust cone crusher, which is able to cope with the high crushing forces due to high resistance from the crushed material against the gyration movement. Metso has launched a new series of cone crushers HP3, HP4 and HP5 that are all able to work in high density crushing applications The test results and evidence from over 300 installations clearly prove the effectiveness and importance of high density crushing. "In the Dongri Buzurg Manganese Mine of M/s Manganese Ore (India) Ltd., high grade lumpy manganese ore required for iron and steel industries is produced through multi-stage crushing and screening. This has resulted in accumulation of 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the years. This production of such fines is still going on. The fines create environmental problems, like air and water pollution and siltation in adjoining fields. Besides containing lot of manganese values, they occupy large space which is very scare in mining area.The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries.The sample/material was subjected to characterisation studies in terms of chemical analysis, granulometry and mineralogical compositions. Based on these characterisation studies, the beneficiation process developed comprised of desliming, jigging and low intensity magnetic separation mainly to reject quartz, silicates and jacobsite. The manganese concentrate thus produced assayed 70.2% MnO2 with MnO2 recovery of 78% and weight per cent yield of 63.5. This natural concentrate could be mixed with the electrolytic manganese dioxide produced by the company and this blend can thus be used as a raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries by the end users. The paper deals with the details of test work carried out in evolving the process flowsheet."

"The mineralogical and physico-chemical characteristics of a polymetallic sample from a mine of West Serbia suggest that it can be classified as a SEDEX type of ore. Those ores contain multiple value components, being inter-dispersed as fine grained aggregates. This prevents concentration by gravity or flotation concentration processes. Mineralogically, the valuable metals (Cu;Zn;Pb;Au and Ag) occur as pyrite, sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, covellite, arsenopyrite, and non-metallic minerals (barite, and waste minerals). Novel technologies are under development within this project for the recovery of all valuable metals from this very complex material. The work comprises the further treatment of solid residue obtained after Cu and Zn extraction by bioleaching, for the subsequent recovery of Pb and the precious metals Ag and Au. The residue is first treated with a saturated sodium chloride solution, whereupon a chloride solution of lead (NaPbCl3) is obtained. From the chloride solution, lead was deposited in the form of lead carbonate, followed by reductive melting, whereupon lead anode was obtained. Electrolytic refining of the lead anode, using a solution of PbCO3 in methane sulphonic acid (MSA-Methanesulfonic acid, min 99.5% CH4O3S, density 1.48 kg/dm3, Manufacturer: Carl Roth) as an electrolyte, yielded refined lead cathode. It should be noted that, after precipitation and separation of lead carbonate, the sodium chloride solution is restored to its original composition by the addition of make-up reagents and returned for another lead-sulfate leaching cycle. The solid residue obtained after leaching lead-sulphate, is leached in thiosulphate solution, with the addition of an activator, a catalyst and lixiviant for gold, to yield a thiosulphate solution of gold and silver. Since the content of gold and silver in solution is low (below 1 mg/dm3), they are first electrolytically concentrated on steel cathode and then refined to pure metals using well-known chemical methods. Note that, after the electrolytic separation of gold and silver, thiosulphate solution is recycled to the leaching step."

Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

"The results of CFD modelling of complex heat transfer and fluid flow in DC electric arc furnace are presented. The model includes energy and momentum conservation equations for gas phase (freeboard), liquid phase (molten bath) and solid phase (walls and graphite electrode). Simulation revealed the temperature distribution in all elements of the furnace. The influence of the arc and melt resistance on the temperature distribution is discussed.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) becomes a powerful tool for better understanding of the heta and mass transfer processes in industrial equipment. In current work commercial CFD software STAR-CD was used to analyse complex heat transfer in DC EAF, including forced and natural convection, conduction and radiation. The finite volume solver using body-fitted grid was used. The grids are non-staggered hexahedral grids and all variables are evaluated at cell centers. Steady-state calculations were performed with PISO algorithm. For the convective terms in equations the hybrid differencing scheme was used. An upwind differencing scheme was used for other terms. Conjugative heat transfer was taken into account in heat transfer calculations on gas-liquid and gas-solid interfaces. Radiation from the arc and inner surfaces of the furnace was calculated by a “discrete beam” approach. Source term in energy conservation equation was used to represent heat release in the zone occupied by the DC electric arc. The volume of this zone was calculated from semi-empirical equations. The Joule heat and heat due to chemical reaction in the melt were calculated through the source term expression in the energy balance equations for the slag and metal in the molten bath. The gas acceleration in the electric arc zone and stirring of the slag due to gas bubbles motion were accounted for by momentum source terms in the momentum conservation equations.All simulations were carried out using axisymmetric two-dimensional grid. The grid resolution was 20 cm per cell in most part of the furnace, except the arc region, where resolution was 5 mm per cell."

"The research study has been devoted to point out the better way to process a colemanite concentrate characterised by a high content of two kind of As sulphides (realgar and orpiment) finely disseminated in the matrix of the boron mineral.Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses have been carried out to determine all the mineralogical constituents and to evaluate their distribution, frequency and mutual relationships.There is a not neglectable part of realgar highly disseminated into the colemanite crystals.The orpiment recurs in small acicular crystals of 20÷30 µm in length and 5 µm in width, very difficult to liberate from the colemanite mineral particles.The colemanite concentrate, in fact, has been addressed to a chemical plant which products were boric acid and gypsum, the contaminated by As. It was unacceptable for further applications and very dangerous if rejected in the environment.Grinding tests under dry and wet conditions have been carried out in order to evaluate the liberation modality of the As sulphide minerals from the colemanite.Some difficulties have been overtaken in order to obtain a selective liberation of the As sulphides from the colemanite even if a certain decreasing in As grade in the higher size classes has been registered.All the comminution products have been analysed by SEM monitoring the liberation degree of the mineralogical constituents.Flotation tests have been carried out after different comminution flow sheet adopting different modulating conditions in order to evaluate the influence of the following parameters:• collector concentration versus contaminants concentration (As minerals) in the froths;• kind and quantity of the frothing agent to maximise the mineral recovery in the froths;• kind and quantity of the modulating agents to maximise the selectivity of the process;• conditioning modalities in order to obtain a suitable dispersion of fines and to avoid segregation of Asbearingparticles together with colemanite ones;• solid/liquid ratio of the pulp to minimise the water flow into the plant."

"The use of ultrasonic in industrial processes has increased during the last few years. Ultrasonic vibrations are used in sieving, grinding, ore washing, cleaning, and flotation in mineral industry. There are also some attempts for the utilization of ultrasonic treatment in separation and removal of fine particles from gases and liquids. In Kalemaden A.S. (Turkey) four different types of clay mixtures (1. A mixture of clays from Balikesir-Düvertepe and Istanbul-Sile, 2. A mixture of clays from Ukrania and Balikesir-Düvertepe, 3. Sögüt-Kadikelimesi, 4. A mixture of clays from Sögüt and Istanbul-Sile) and kaolin from Balikesir-Düvertepe (Turkey) are concentrated before their use in ceramic production. Dewatering is the important step in those types of concentration plants. Sedimentation of concentrated clay has always been difficult and taken long times due to their nature and having small particle sizes. Flocculants can be used to enhance the sedimentation, but they are not preferred by the ceramic industry since they affect the quality of ceramic products. For this purpose, ultrasonic treatment is used in the sedimentation of clays mentioned above for solving the problems encountered related to the ceramic industry and promising results were obtained.Kaolin sample, subjected to this experimental study, from Balikesir-Düvertepe region of Turkey was brought from the plant as a pulp in containers and throughly mixed with a stirrer before sedimentation experiments. A two liter graduated cylinder and an ultrasonic bath (with 25 kHz frequency and 0.5 KW power) were utilized in the tests. Superfloc A-120 (1% concentration) was used as a flocculant. The settling distance was reported against the settling time during the experiments. Initial and final pulp densities were also determined. The effects of several parameters such as pulp density, flocculant addition, and ultrasonic treatment on the sedimentation of kaolin were investigated and the results are represented in terms of settling distance versus settling time."

"CSIRO Minerals has developed an integrated particle size analysis system for deployment in the grinding circuits of minerals processing plants. The system includes a slurry sampling station, a de-aeration tank and an ultrasonic particle size analyser (UltraPS). The UltraPS analyser is based on ultrasonic attenuation and velocity spectrometry combined with gamma-ray transmission. The technology is applicable to the measurement of 0.1 to 1000 µm diameter particles directly in highly concentrated slurries without dilution. The analyser incorporates a gamma-ray transmission gauge utilising an ultra-low activity radioisotope source that is exempt from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Australian licensing regulations.The UltraPS analyser consists of a submersible probe and an electronics package. The probe can be immersed directly in a minerals processing plant stream if the aeration level in the stream is low. For applications where a de-aerated slurry stream is not available, CSIRO has developed an integrated system that includes a sampling station, a de-aeration tank as well as the UltraPS analyser itself. A schematic drawing of the continuous flow gravity fed system is shown in the figure. A commercial sampling system is used to supply slurry at a rate of 2.5m3/hr to the deaeration tank. The aim of the de-aeration tank is to remove air in the slurry to a level where meaningful particle size measurements can be performed. The tank volume is about 0.2m3, thus giving the slurry flowing through the tank a mean residence time in the tank of approximately five minutes. Tests at a number of concentrators have shown that five minutes is sufficient time for slurry to de-aerate to a level where ultrasonic measurements can be made. The tank incorporates an ultrasonic level detection sensor and flow to the deaeration tank is adjusted based on the level of slurry within the tank. The UltraPS probe is mounted through a flanged section of duct, which is bolted to the bottom of the de-aeration tank."

"Bentonite clay has been the traditional binder for iron ore pellets. However, bentonite increases pellets’ silica contents and is expensive. Researchers have proposed lowering bentonite doses by mixing it with other common binders. These mixtures may only be successful if the fundamental bonding mechanisms are understood. For example, what happens when bentonite (physical bonding) is mixed with fly-ash (chemical bonding)? What happens when bentonite is mixed with cornstarch (physical bonding)? In this paper, experiments are described where bentonite was mixed with various ratios of cornstarch and fly-ash, and pellets were agglomerated using 0.66 % w/w binder. Ca(OH)2 and CaCl2 were added as activator and accelerator, respectively, to the bentonite-fly ash mixture. Curves of pellet dry strength vs. bentonite-starch ratio were linear, suggesting the physical-physical bonding mechanisms were compatible - acceptable strengths (> 22 N) were produced at all bentonite-to-starch ratios. This was contrary to bentonite-fly ash mixtures, which displayed dry strength curves with a noticeable minimum due to competing binding mechanisms. Bentonite alone and fly ash alone produced acceptable strengths (> 22 N), but their mixtures resulted in weak pellets. Due to the positive results using cornstarch (CS) binders, the effects of CS solubility in water were investigated using two CS with high and low solubility (60 and 7.5 %). CS was premixed with bentonite at various ratios (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 %). Pellets were agglomerated using 0.66 % w/w binder. The dry strength of pellets ranged from 50-300 N using the high solubility CS mixtures, and from 50-85 N using the low solubility CS mixtures. Fired strengths exceeded 2200 N/pellet at all bentonite-cornstarch ratios. This research showed that cornstarch solubility is an important factor in determining its effectiveness as a binder for iron ore concentrates, but significant work is still necessary before it can be used as a bentonite replacement."

"This paper presents the results of pilot scale column flotation applications in the two different copper concentrators in Turkey. The Kure Copper Plant is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. There are four types of copper ore formations in the Küre region. The so called disseminated ore contains 60-70% siliceous minerals of which Cu content is around 0.5%. The remaining three ore types in the region are generally named “massive ores”. The massive ores may assay up to 15% Cu and the major gangue mineral is pyrite associated with relatively little amount of silica. The main copper mineral in all formations is chalcopyrite that is generally finely disseminated in pyrite therefore satisfactory liberation requires ultrafine grinding especially in the case of the massive ores.A blend of these ores, containing 1.7% Cu on average, is fed to the Küre Copper Concentrator whose capacity is 1.2 million tons of ore annually. Unfortunately, today the plant operates below its designed capacity treating around 550,000 tons of ore per year. The design of Küre Copper Plant was undertaken by the Outokumpu Company of Finland. The operation of the plant is almost automatically controlled and the feed, the concentrate and the tailings are assayed for copper by on-line XRF analysers. The particle size analysers are also connected to the grinding circuit. The feed material is ground almost below 50 µm and the flotation is conducted around pH 11.2 using Hostaflot X-231 (a trade mark of Hoechst) as the collector. Apart from the rougher cells, there are four cleaning stages after which the final concentrate is produced. A very fine grinding requirement for an adequate level of liberation makes successful flotation difficult and consequently the final concentrate can hardly assay above 16% Cu leading to copper losses around 20% in the tailings that contains 0.3% copper."

"Bubble-mineral complexes could be formatted by an attaching of hydrophobic particles to the surface of air bubbles or by an evolution of bubbles from solution onto hydrophobic surfaces. Measurements of contact angles, detachment forces (DF), induction times (IT), evolution pressures (EP) and flotation recoveries (FR) for the studying of minerals wettability at various pH and electrochemical potentials were used. An analysis of the obtained IT results show that a process of bubble attachment to a mineral surface is a rather slow one and it will scarcely be enough for bubble-mineral complex formation under the conditions of real flotation.The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements, Figure 1, correlate with the data of floatability-potential for pyrite. The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements for galena (-1 ÷0.2V) and chalcocite (-0.5÷1.2V) correlate with the potential ranges of floatability for galena (<0.2V) and chalcocite (>-0.4V). An increase of the DF and the cathodic limit of the adhesion potential with increasing length of the hydrocarbon chain were observed. EP-pH curves for sulfides are a mirror-like to the DF-pH curves, Figure 2. Structure of solid-liquid and liquid-gas borders has a determinative importance for formation of bubble-mineral complexes and subsequently flotation results. Under vacuum on the mineral surface there are produced micro bubbles and preferably they will be appeared on the hydrophobic sites. Water structure breaks near a hydrophobic surface facilitate water mass destruction and formation of gaseous phase embryos under decompression in the impeller zone. It simultaneously reduces a probability of produced micro bubbles dissolution as a result of pressure increasing owing to constant fluctuation of liquid densities into impeller zone. Comparison of Taggart’s evaluation of the suction behind blades of the impeller of an agitation-froth machine and ABEP data on galena, Figure, shows that gas evolution will be observed in the range of 1300-2700 revolutions of impeller per minute for hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces successively."

"We present an analysis of trajectory and time averaged data of near gravitational material (NGM) representative coal tracer particles within a magnetite medium passing through a 100mm diameter hydrocyclone imaged with PEPT (positron emission particle tracking) at iThemba labs, Cape Town. The tracking of neutrally buoyant tracers as well as the other NGM allows an empirical study of the approximate dynamical behaviours of both the dense medium as well as the range (size and density) of particles around the separator’s cut size within a partially imaged volume of the cyclone body lying within the field of view of the detector. The study was commissioned as part of a CFD validation study using empirical data from a real-world lab-appropriate system in order to shed light on the inner workings of hydrocyclones and their separation mechanisms. We employ various optimisation and noise reduction techniques within the analysis and follow a detailed investigation of the velocity fields derived from the raw spatial positions with an emphasis on the velocity profile within the forced and free vortex zones. Challenges encountered with this high velocity particle tracking experiment within a highly attenuating environment are also discussed. Various important velocity distributions are shown and compared to theoretical predictions. The power law decay profile of the free vortex and radial velocity scaling with regards to the Froude number are reproduced in line with the static particle approach. INTRODUCTION Cyclones have long been a vital industrial tool for the separation of different classes of particles. These cyclonic separators (with either gas or liquid medium) operate by forcing the solids-bearing fluid at high pressure into a cylindrical vessel causing high tangential velocity fluid rotation as well as, in the case of an “open” (with exit channels open to the atmosphere) cyclone, a central vortex air column spanning from underflow to overflow exit. The fluid is forced to exit the cyclone at two locations, the spigot and the vortex finder, generating the underflow and overflow respectively. The body of the cyclone usually terminates in a conical shape to focus the underflow stream. This geometry and large incident fluid velocity force high density materials toward the wall of the vessel where they are most likely to move along and down the inside wall away from the inlet to exit via the underflow while lower density materials traverse the cyclone body closer to the central vortex and are buffeted by the upward-moving column towards the overflow exit. This separation mechanism is selective of density and size in an interplay between the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the fluid and a drag force acting on the particles."

"The first experiments on the vacuum drying of spherical clay sample are presented and the theoretical model of the process is considered. The model is based on the solution of the heat and the moisture transfer equations with the effective thermal conductivity and water diffusion coefficients for wet porous clay-like medium. The time and radial dependence of the temperature and the moisture were calculated for different initial conditions. The results obtained for the time dependence of the moisture content are in good agreement with the experimental results obtained in the initial period, when all the moisture in the sample did not freeze to form an ice crust. INTRODUCTION Capillary-porous materials very often occur in nature and in industry. A porous medium is a solid matrix with voids, or pores, which are continuously connected. These pores are usually filled with fluids or moisture, water vapor and air that can pass through the medium because the voids are interconnected. The void fraction in the solid matrix is referred to as the porosity. Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void (i.e. ""empty"") spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume. The moisture content in porous media determines the properties of the porous body, its mechanical and thermo-physical properties, such as density, plasticity, viscoelasticity, swelling, cracking, and so on. Complex processes of heat and mass transfer occur in porous bodies when they are heated or cooled, during drying or freezing (Luikov,1966). The course of these processes depends essentially on the physical-chemical composition of the solid matrix of the porous body, on its fractal dimension, porosity and morphology. The clay and clay minerals are the most important porous materials in the history of the mankind (Mukherjee, 2013). Clay is a very fine grained, unconsolidated rock matter, which is plastic when wet, but becomes hard and stony when heated. It has its origin in natural processes, mostly complex weathering, transported and deposited by sedimentation within geological periods. Clay is composed of silica {SiO2), Alumina (Al2O3) and water (H2O) plus appreciable concentrations of oxides of iron, alkali and alkaline earth, and contains groups of crystalline substances such as quartz, feldspar, and mica. Building materials, bricks, and tiles, pottery, porcelain and faience are made from clay. Clay is used in the food and medical industry, and, not least, in the mining industry as a carrier containing aluminum, silicon and other valuable elements, as well as metals (copper, gold) as constituents, contained in the pores in the form of micro- and nano-particles or grains."
