"X-ray transmission (XRT) sorting has been introduced into the minerals industry in 2006 and has found various applications in diamonds, industrial minerals and metal ore processing since. The technology offers planar projections of the atomic density of single particles similar to the principle known from airport scanners, but being capable of treating up to 150tph per metre working width. In 2010, a pilot operation using a belt-type sensor-based sorter went into production at the Mittersill mine to treat the fraction 16-28mm. After an optimisation phase, the results were superseding expectations and therefore in 2012 a bigger production plant was set up. Two XRT-based sorters are parallel in operation since. One is treating the fine fraction 16-30mm while the other one is treating the coarser fraction 30-60mm after the secondary crushing stage. The XRT sorters are operated with the objective to reject barren waste before it enters the mill and flotation plant. 105,000tpa of waste material are rejected per year and can be sold as aggregate for road construction. This means that about 22% of the run-of-mine ore are rejected at an early stage with a waste reject grade lower than 0.03wt%WO3. The installation has not only led to lower specific operating costs but also led to reduced tailings disposal in an environmentally sensitive area. This allows the mine to reduce its headgrade which allows for a longer mine life. Alternatively it is possible to produce more tungsten concentrate, which is delivered to the smelter. This article will introduce the technological principle of XRT-based sorting and will discuss the flow-sheet of the Mittersill mine. Experiences that have led to the current plant design are described as well as the impact it has on the operation."

"Nickel sulphide ores subjected to this investigation were taken from Orhaneli district where widespread chromite mineralisation can be occurred. Significant amounts of magnetite and chromite have been existed in the ore together with sulphide and oxide type nickel minerals. Ore sample is constituted about 70% magnetite, 15% sulphide minerals, 5% chromite and iron oxides as well as 10% gangue minerals.According to the chemical analysis results, the representative ore sample contains 1.32% Ni, 10.8% SiO2, 78.4% Fe2O3, 1.3 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. Mineralogical examinations showed that pentlandite (Fe, Ni)9S8, violarite (Ni, Fe)3S4, millerite NiS and asbolane (Co, Ni)MnO2.(OH)2.1-2H2O were the main nickel minerals and magnetite, chromite, chromium spinals, pyrite, pyrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite, goethite, hematite, limonite, rutile, chlorite, talc and serpentine group minerals as associated minerals.The aim of this investigation was to produce valuable nickel concentrates by using gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation methods. As a results of laboratory scale studies, alternative flow sheets for the production of nickel sulphide concentrate were developed. The related experimental results are given in Table 1."

"Since the 1970?s we have seen a marked corporate response in terms of the environment. In part this has come from regulation but it has largely come from stakeholders and the community. Rising expectations have in general been met. We now see a similar trend towards sustainability. At the same time, the importance of mining to the share market has decreased drastically and with that decrease has come the requirement for the mining sector to show returns similar in manner to other sectors. While rationalisation can achieve some progress towards these goals, the long-term requirement is for innovation, as it always has been. This paper looks to the logical goal of innovation within a sustainable mining framework and targets the removal of the desired metal values with minimal environmental footprint. It is suggested that broad ranging alliances will be necessary, particularly amongst the R&D suppliers, to achieve this goal. Industry will need to take an active role given the recent global restructuring.THE MARCH TO SUSTAINABILITYSince the 1970?s there has been an increasing corporate response on environmental matters. We have moved from matters environmental being issues relevant only to minority groups through a series of attitudinal changes by management. Whilst there have always been examples of excellent environmental performance, for many in the 70?s spending money on improving the environment beyond some minimal level was seen as a distraction from production or treated in a similar way to donations to the community. There is little of that attitude these days, as most mining companies have long since regarded the environment as a core business direction. Indeed, for some years one could note an escalation in matters of environmental reporting to the extent that the environmental performance of companies is now very public. In some cases, NGOs have even been invited to help certify and audit the reporting standards. Similarly with health & safety.There is now a rising expectation on the part of the community that social matters will also be given the same level of support as health, safety and the environment. This time around it would appear that the mining industry is at the leading edge of sustainability. The Global Mining Initiative (Global Mining, 2002) and the contributions to the Rio World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio +10, 2002) suggest that sustainability is being taken very seriously by the mining industry. For sustainability it is convenient to use the Brundtland (1987) definition. This definition has widespread acceptance with governments, industry, environmental groups, financial institutions and individuals as a direction against which our activities and plans can be measured."

Considerable attention has been, and is being, given to the physics of water-films associated with bubble interactions at surfaces. In contrast, little information on the chemistry of such films has been reported. This communication reports a method using sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) to describe hydrogen bonding of interfacial water molecules in water films created with bubbles at hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The SFVS spectra of water films at hydrophilic silica surfaces differ significantly from the spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface. The SFVS spectra indicate that a very ordered water structure exists in water films at the hydrophilic silica surface during contact with a bubble and that the extent of hydrogen bonding increases with an increase in contact pressure. Such structural considerations as well as repulsive electrostatic and Van der Waals forces account for film stability for a bubble at the hydrophilic silica surface. In contrast, the SFVS spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface show a lack of hydrogen bonding and are characterized by a distinct absorption at about 3700 cm-1 similar to the spectrum of the air/water interface. These results suggest the presence of a water void, or water exclusion zone, at the hydrophobic surface, as supported by X-ray reflectivity measurements reported in the literature, by atomic force microscopy, and by the results from molecular dynamics simulations. Of course the water film at the hydrophobic surface is unstable with film thinning and rupture upon bubble contact. Under these circumstances it is shown that an attractive Van der Waals force between the bubble and the hydrophobic surface can be expected when the water exclusion zone is taken into consideration. As the thickness of the water exclusion zone increases to a thickness corresponding to the size of nano bubbles, the calculated attractive Van der Waals force increases. This paper, while briefly reviews its main scientific and technological advancement, pays special attention to the complete set of new technology and technical index achieved in recent years, which is characterized by using full-floatation flow-sheet as the backbone flow-sheet, explores some key factors influencing tungsten floatation, and presents a brief introduction to such new equipment as flotation column and comprehensive utilization of fluorite.

The innovative point of this new technology can be described that under normal pressure and 70°C, using a new combined activating and oxidizing agent, the minerals bearing arsenic and organic carbon are oxidized effectively. This technology can be applied in commercial scale. The high carbon and arsenic bearing gold ore is taken from Gansu, where hundreds of tons gold deposit. The ore has 0.51% of arsenic and 1.75% of carbon (1.07% of organic carbon). The gold occurs mainly in native with particle size 0.02~0.6 mm and a few are enwrapped by pyrite and arsenopyrite. The traditional cyanide leaching process gains a very low gold leaching rate with only 5%. Through systemic experimental study, the technological flowsheet of flotation process for concentrating gold, then pre-treating the gold concentrate followed by cyanide leaching the gold concentrate are used. With 4.92 g/t gold of head sample, the gold concentrate with 46.52g/t gold grade and 96.53% gold recovery is gained by flotation process. Followed by pre-treatment for 6 hours, the gold concentrate is leached with cyanide after filtration and washing. The total gold leaching rate is up to 95.44%.

"Over the last 5 years, an ambitious project has been undertaken at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) aiming to isolate, study and, if possible, model the effect of particle size, liberation and collector adsorption density on the floatability of mineral particles. As part of this project, we have conducted highly controlled flotation test-work, combined with state-of-the-art solution and surface analytical techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and detailed mineralogical analysis to fully characterize the flotation behavior of a natural ore.The flotation tests were undertaken using a high-grade lead-zinc ore from BHP-Billiton's Cannington mine (Australia) in a specially designed continuously operated laboratory scale flotation rig. Solution and adsorbed collector concentrations were measured independently during the course of the flotation tests using HPLC based ex-situ techniques. Liberation studies were performed using the JKMRC Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) on selected size intervals of different streams to estimate the specific surface area of galena. These results were used to calculate the collector adsorption density (collector coverage) on galena particles, with the eventual aim of developing a mathematical model describing the relationship between pulp chemistry, feed mineralogy, and floatability of galena particles."

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

Yuanjiacun iron ore located in Shanxi province of China has finely disseminated grain size and contains refractory iron-bearing silicate gangue minerals such as chlorite. Therefore, a large amount of secondary slime (the content of -10µm fraction was up to 32.92%) was produced inevitably in fine grinding process, and chlorite was also enriched in concentrate from the content of 4.3% to 14.8% after high intensity magnetic separation. These two characteristics result in the difficulty to deal with Yuanjiacun iron ore by flotation. In this test work, contrast tests between single reverse flotation and selective flocculation desliming-reverse flotation were conducted on Yuanjiacun iron ore. The test results show that after selective flocculation desliming, the iron grade of cationic reverse flotation concentrate increases by 6.15% and the recovery increases by 7.25%; the iron grade of anionic reverse flotation concentrate also increases by 2.15%. Furthermore, analyses of grain size composition and mineral composition were carried out on separation products, the results indicate that selective flocculation desliming plays a dual role of optimizing grain size composition of flotation feed and removing iron-bearing silicate gangue minerals (chlorite) effectively.

"The major ilmenite reserves are located in India at Chavara (CH), Manavalakurichi ( MK) and Chatrapur, Orissa (OR). India stands first in terms of ilmenite reserves, which are estimated to be 278 million tonnes out of which, 142 million tonnes are processable. Mineralo-chemical analysis shows that Chavara ilmenite is the most weathered one with about 60% TiO2 while Chatrapur is the least weathered with about 50% TiO2. Co-existence of ilmenite with pseudorutile, rutile and haematite is observed in substantially varying amounts in the three deposits. It is observed that the tropical weathering rather than the source rock difference has apparently played an important role in imparting major compositional and structural dissimilarities among ilmenites in different places.In processing of ilmenite through the Becher process, aeration rusting of pre-reduced ilmenite is found to be the rate limiting step thus, affecting the productivity of the process. Investigations have proved that the addition of some organic compounds such as glyoxal, sucrose etc., to the system accelerates the reaction to such an extent that the rusting time has been reduced to less than half.A new route of processing ilmenite for synthetic rutile has also been developed in which, ilmenite is carbothermally reduced and then processed through plasma route. The slag thus obtained is processed further to get high-grade synthetic rutile, metallic iron and high purity iron oxide. The process has been scaled up in a continuous moving bed plasma reactor. It is technologically and economically more viable where, all the iron values are recovered as salable byproducts. This paper describes the salient features of the technologies developed for the beneficiation of ilmenite to synthetic rutile."

"This paper presents early results from a case study at the Mount Polley porphyry copper mine in British Columbia, Canada. Daily mineralogical data was acquired and reconciled with daily plant assay and recovery balances to interrogate the mineralogical controls on plant performance. After commissioning, the Minesite machine operated smoothly and reliably, creating daily data to generate mineralogical balances around the circuit for a period of several weeks. The key data, on final products were produced within 13 hours of the end of the respective operating period. The resulting information allowed for a greater understanding of the opportunities and limitations of the Mount Polley metallurgy. In this paper, how this information can be used to help long term strategic planning for the operation, as well as mine planning and production forecasting and the fine tuning of day to day mill operations is described. Early data available at the time of preparing this paper indicated that roughly 40% of the sulphide losses, or 32% of total copper losses existed as low grade inclusions in +75 micron tails. This represented the dominant form of long term copper losses, demonstrated repeatedly in the routine analytical data. However, on a day-to-day basis, the amount of copper present as chrysocolla is the major driver behind variations in total copper recovery. The degree to which this influences mill recovery is valuable to the geologist or mine planner. As they are armed with mineral speciation information for future ores, this will allow for improved mine planning, prediction of copper recoveries and production forecasting. The data was also started to find value in the mill by showing what caused sulphide losses. In the roughers, for example, the data showed poor recovery was the result of poor flotation performance and not any changes the speciation of copper sulphides or their liberation characteristics."

The challenges of nature for the recovery of metals for a sustainable future continue to present in diverse ways. Base metal deposits are becoming lower grade and more complex. Rare earth metal demand is soaring and must certainly be met from new sources outside of China. Precious metals have soared in value due to increased industrial usage and the importance of these metals as financial instruments. Many of the future sources of precious metals are complex and difficult to process. The field of hydrometallurgy plays an important role in providing technology for extraction of these metals for a sustainable future. Selected examples from the base, rare and precious metals fields will be used to illustrate how current developments are providing metals for our future. The recovery of rare earths by beneficiation, leaching, purification, precipitation will be described from a multi-mineral deposit in Canada. The recovery of metals from complex base and precious metal ores may be accomplished using chloride ? assisted high temperature pressure leaching. Finally, by way of example, the enhanced Galvanox? process for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates using silver-activated pyrite as a catalyst will be illustrated. This process offers a viable alternative to the conventional smelting of chalcopyrite copper concentrates.

"This paper argues that, although specialist mineral engineering expertise is essential for the efficient design and operation of mineral processing plants, the environment in which these skills are supplied to the industry has changed forever, and not for the better. Most of the mineral engineering programmes in western universities have died or are dying. The long-service mine site mentors have gone, operations are run on a staffing shoestring so that there is no longer the time (or inclination) for considered decision-making, and the FIFO model has discouraged continuity of optimisation projects and communication between professionals. At the same time the technical challenges of designing and operating effective process plants are increasing. These trends are not going to be reversed any time soon, if ever. The ability to run efficient mineral processing operations has been materially compromised as a consequence. We propose that well-designed professional development can help to recover this situation, and it can be done easily and cheaply. The workplace is the best environment for such skills development. Professional development training should be integrated with normal duties throughout the early years of a graduate’s service (and probably beyond), and the cost should be regarded as non-discretionary expenditure for the business. If such programmes are properly resourced and managed and extended over longer time periods, there will be a measureable rise in the level of technical understanding and competence within companies and a resulting beneficial impact on resource utilisation and thus shareholder value. The paper outlines some of the approaches that we believe will work, and the benefits that we expect will accrue."

Today, most requests for quotations force all bidders to follow the bid document to the letter. The choice is then made based on price since it is the only difference in technically identical offers. However, clients allow and even encourage suppliers to come up with alternatives. Overall economy again, is much more than low investment costs. Operation costs may affect the economy of a project far more than a million saved in investment. There is almost always the choice: Should we go for the cheapest solution or should we go for the most economical solution? We strongly recommend the study of the long-term effects on investments as they often surpass any apparent savings in capital expenditure. With high operating costs, time is never on our side. Almost all relevant inputs and outputs in a concentrator have a value that can be expressed in a suitable currency. Unit prices may differ substantially from one operation to the other, but everything has a price tag and globalization has made it possible to move both goods and services to almost any place in the world. Even a rather simple exercise can give a good indication on which process improvements are worth pursuing when investing in new systems or equipment. The ones that do not qualify, as money earners, will naturally appear as clearly. No ?rocket science? is required, just process knowledge, practical experience, an open mind and some common sense and the reward may be the difference of having a good or an excellent project. The model we have developed can be made as detailed as required, but we do not recommend too much detail, as it sometimes tends to distract work and obscure the important issues. Two different process solutions compared in a simplified example illustrate the importance of evaluating a project based on its long-term effects rather than focusing on the investment costs only.

"Large volumes of mine tailings accumulated in surroundings of porphyry copper deposits represent a growing threat to environment. They contain significant concentrations of toxic metal and metalloids which can contaminate river runoff, ground waters or can be transported by wind. Both extreme pH of fluids in tailings impoundments and high surface areas of processed mineral grains provide their increased reactivity. As a result, during only a few decades, As, Cu, and Mo can be mobilized, redistributed through the tailing column and accumulated through post-deposition leaching, evaporation and contamination with natural fluids. Those processes are reflected in the forming of secondary minerals. Gypsum, Fe oxides/hydroxides, efflorescent salts and clay minerals are typical alteration products in tailings. Here we present the results of reactive transport simulations implemented on the base of PHREEQC and SUTRA codes. The one-dimension model emulates the mass balance between rainfall, evaporation and subsurface runoff, the kinetically- and thermodynamically-driven dissolution of tailing minerals, advective and diffusive transport of tailing fluids, and precipitation of secondary phases. A typical tailing column is composed of four unequal layers with predominance of (i) evaporation, (ii) secondary mineralization above, (iii) below water table, and (iv) near the bottom of dump. Those horizons are characterized by contrasting pH, chemical composition and bulk mineralization of pore fluids, distinct accessibility of atmospheric oxygen and, as a consequence, distinct intensity of sulfide oxidation. The modeling and its verification on Chilean tailings impoundments reveal the complexity and high rates of secondary mineralization. The accumulation of toxic alteration products is controlled by fluid transport through the tailing column induced by both rainfall/evaporation and exchange with subsurface runoff. The geochemical modeling is a powerful approach which allows comparing the processes in tailing deposits produced by distinct flotation regimes and providing the long-term predictions of their environmental impact as well as identifying sectors of tailings for possible re-processing."

The basic objectives of current EU waste policy are to prevent waste and promote re-use, recycling and recovery to reduce negative environmental impact (2008/98/EC). In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for sustainable development by decreasing amount of waste and increasing material efficiency. Main target is to understand what are the most efficient drivers for environmental friendly decision making for reasonable consumption and use of raw materials. Environmental control instruments usually mean those actions the regulatory authority uses to control and limit environmentally harmful behavior of companies. A major change in the environmental control system took place in the 1980s with the focus moving from specific environmental issues to the environment as a whole. The environmental control system i.e. the legal (administrative), economic and informative instruments focuses on prevention. Before and still, the legislation is one of the main drivers in improving material efficiency. In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for effective industrial material use, and mainly on drivers. The objective of this study is to analyze how the drivers are working and are there any possibilities to influence on those. Our aim is also to introduce few examples of the existing supply chains and the drivers for better environmental performance and material efficiency. These examples are also compared with ideal reference scenarios. Our main research question in this article is: ?Are the financial issues the most important driver for environmental friendly strategic decisions?? In addition, retell the story from another perspective: ?The most important barrier for environmental friendly innovations seem to be the investment cost, the high risk involved in committing capital to unproven technology.? Other drivers, like the corporate social responsibility, stakeholder pressure, and general public pressure, will also affect the final decision. "The present work is an attempt of neural networks application to the description of complex technological processes of useful minerals enrichment. Neural networks are among the most convenient tools that have been added recently to the professional toolbox of modelling specialists, and they are particularly useful in realisation of multiple practical tasks, characterised by great complexity and relatively low amount of available a priori knowledge about the nature of the modelled processes. They are successfully applied in a wide variety of problems related to data processing and analysis, their prediction, classification or process control. The object of the study was the technological site for copper ore enrichment by floatation, being a part of technological line in the Ore Enrichment Plant ZG „Polkowice”, KGHM „Polska Miedz” S.A.The main floatation is described by parameters measured by the supervision and control system, which can be grouped with respect to the functions performed for the object:a) input function: aFG - copper contents in the feed material for the main floatation [% Cu]b) control: LFG I - level in the first section of the floatation unit [%], LFG II - level in the second section of the flotation unit [%], LFG III - level in the third section of the floatation unit [%], LFG IV - level in the fourth section of the floatation machine [%]. These quantities compose the five elements long input vector.c) output function: ? - copper contents in the waste from main flotation (final waste) [% Cu]The measurement data, containing the above-mentioned parameters, have been collected during the normal operation of the plant. The data contain momentary values of the parameters, registered every 10 minutes, covering the period of 196 hours of the plant’s operation (1176 measurements for each quantity).For construction of the model used in the study classical multi-layer perceptron-type neural network has been used, with one hidden neuron layer, trained by the error back propagation method."

"Screening is an important means of size classification used on granular or particulate materials. The vibrating modes of screen separator have a great effect on the screening process. Elliptical vibration mode is a complex motion mode which gets the common characteristics of both linear and circular vibration modes. However, the fundamental motion and screen penetration of the particles on the elliptically vibrating screen deck are still poorly understood. A numerical study of the motion of particulates flow along an elliptically vibrating screen deck is presented by means of a three dimensional Discrete Element Method (3D-DEM). The motion characteristic of the particle flow is analyzed at a particle scale. The effects of vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle on the screening process are discussed. The results show that the particles average velocity increases linearly with the increase of vibration amplitude, throwing index and screen deck inclination angle, but decreases linearly with the increase of vibration direction angle. The screening efficiency is highest when the vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle are 4.5 mm, 3.3, 40° and 6°, respectively. This work is helpful for developing a deep understanding of particle motion on the elliptically vibrating screen and for optimizing screen separator designs."

"Jet diffuser flotation column (JDFC) is a flotation device resembles Jameson flotation cell (JFC) in terms of operational principles, but it has significant difference structural points of view. This difference is an essential change in the downcomer to provide an increase of performance of the cell for the coarse particles. By using the hydrodynamic and fluid mechanics principles (Sahbaz et al., 2013) downcomer was changed as a diffuser, therefore turbulence at the end of the downcomer was reduced to provide better aggregate stability and homogeneous dissipation of the bubbles in the separation tank. According to experimental results carried out in pilot scale JDFC, not only higher flotation performance comparing with Jameson cell was obtained specifically for coarse talc particles in a certain condition, but also quiescent froth layer was acquired. In these tests, vertical pipe of JDFC having inlet diameter of 6 cm and outlet diameter of 11.5 cm was used with separation tank having the diameter of 39 cm. By using the data, pilot scale JDFC having 410 cm vertical pipe integrated with separation tank was produced and flotation tests were carried out by using the naturally hydrophobic mineral (talc). Finally, the talc recovery obtained as 94% by the use of JDFC, while Jameson cell has the recovery of 77% for the particle size of 250 µm."
